Well also have a live report from The Middle East as israel launches a Ground Offensive into Southern Lebanon after weeks of deadly Air Strikes targeting hezbollahing the militants. And what could be the final debate of the 2024 president ial debate. Jd vance and Tim Walz set to square off tonight in New York. With us, the host of way too early, jonathan lemire. Bbcs Katty Kay. And the president on the council of foreign relations, richard haass. Author of the Newsletter Home and away. Well get to it all in a minute. Pete rose died. Kept out of the hall of because of the betting scandal. Talent was huge. Member of three World Series Championship teams. The Cincinnati Reds in the 70s. Got a third with the philadelphia phillies. The alltime hits king, a record that i dont see being broken, at least not anytime season. Well over 4,000 hits for rose. Then, as manager of the reds, later had to admit, after denying it for decades, he, indeed, was betting on baseball. Even betting on his own team. Never against his own team. The man was competitive, to be clear. That, of course, is sort of the cardinal rule in baseball. Hes been held out of the Hall Of Fame, something he was bitter about, but his legacy lives on. Yesterday, passed away at the age of 83. Well have a conversation later in the hour with Mike Barnicle about whether Pete Rose should be in the Hall Of Fame. An ageold debate. Well get to that. Lets begin with developments out of The Middle East where the israeli military started a Ground OffensiveIn Lebanon. Troops crossed the border for a targeted operation, theyre calling it, posting this video on Social Media. The idf notified the u. S. About its plan and says the goal is to push Hezbollah Farther away from the border. This comes just days after israel killed the terrorist groups leader, nasrallah. Lets go right to Nbc News international correspondent Matt Bradley, live from beirut. Matt, whats the latest there . Reporter yeah, willie. Quick answer is that we dont really know. This is a very unusual moment because the israelis have said, as you just mentioned in your introduction, that they have launched a Ground Incursion into Southern Lebanon. Hezbollah, we just got this in the last couple of minutes, has denied that. They said this is a zionist lie and that, actually, there has been no confrontation between Hezbollah And Israeli troops. Thats consistent with what the israelis are saying. They said theyve had no exchange of fire between hezbollah forces and israeli Ground Forces in Southern Lebanon. Its becoming a if a tree falls in the Forest Type of situation. The fact is, the israelis said theyve crossed over. They havent engaged with hezbollah. Theyve said that theyve been Crossing Over we got this News Yesterday for the past several weeks. This has been a regular occurrence. It is very unclear what about Last Night and what about this israeli incursion, which has been formally announced, is different from what weve seen over the past several weeks, even though we didnt know the israelis were Crossing Over with some regularity. Now, it looks as though theyre making this public. They said yesterday they have been doing this regularly. Its unclear what they were doing Last Night and whether this is a real, appreciative difference from what weve been seeing over the past several days and weeks. The fact is, israel is continuing to do what it has been doing the past several weeks, punishing hezbollah with Air Strikes. That is still, by far, the most effective israeli Response Weve been seeing the past several weeks, ever since they widened their attacks against hezbollah. Now, we dont know how far israeli Ground Forces moved into lebanon. We dont know if theyre still there. Weve heard from and this is all quoting reuters, an israeli Security Official. The israeli Security Official told reuters they are within Walking Distance of the lebanese border, and they havent exceeded that distance so far. Again, a very unusual moment where hezbollah is saying this is all a lie. The israelis have said they have been moving into Southern Lebanon, but theres nothing about that to make it sound as if it is different from what weve been hearing the past several days and weeks. Were at a critical impasse. Is this a Paradigm Shift in what weve been seeing the last year . Is this an appreciable increase in the offensive weve been seeing over the past two weeks, mostly entirely focused on airtoground attacks by the israelis, decapitating hezbollah. Unusual episodes in exploding pagers and walkietalkies that killed hezbollah commanders. Over the next hours will tell. Matt bradley live in beirut, In Lebanon, thank you so much. Richard haass, this comes at The End of a couple of extraordinary weeks of israel on the offensive against hezbollah. The pagers, the walkietalkies, the Air Strike that killed nasrallah, who had been a target of theirs many decades. Now, apparently a Ground Incursion. What does this signal to you . Look, what the israelis want to do is be able to move 60,000, 70,000 of their citizens back to their homes in northern israel. Either you push Hezbollah Far, far back, 20, 30 miles back, beyond the range of their systems, or you persuade hezbollah, wherever they are, to Attack Israel is a dangerous undertaking. The latter makes more sense. Israel doesnt want to occupy lebanon again. Been there, done that. If you leave, they can always bring forces back. The real question is whether you can change the calculus of hezbollah directly or conceivably their masters or partners in tehran. Thats what the israelis are trying to do, essentially deter them from using the systems they have. You cant eliminate all their systems. You cant prevent 100 resupply. I think this is about changing the calculus of hezbollah and setting up a new, informal modus av aventi. Hezbollah has been attacking israelis since October 8th, after the attack on October 7th. What has this done to the psyche of hezbollah . If israel has completely decapitated its leadership, shown they can strike in their hip pocket, whats it mean . As you suggest, its put them back on their heels. The idea that Israel And Hezbollah reached some type of an understanding, unpeaceful coexistence, thats been shattered. The israelis essentially said, were not going to play that game anymore. They have really, really hurt hezbollah, weakened it dramatically. Eliminated it . No, thats not possible. It also sends a message to tehran. The idea that your proxies, you can operate through them and, again, theres ceilings on what israel is willing to do, it shattered that assumption. Also, i think its actually restrained iran. I think it sends a message to them. Youre not safe. Your Leadership Isnt necessarily safe and all that. What the israelis are trying to do, i think, is change the rules of the road in The Middle East. It doesnt eliminate the threats they face from the houthis, hezbollah, hamas, much less from iran. I think its to change the calculus and give them a little more space. They may have succeeded at that for a while. Over the last couple days, cat katty, u. S. Officials telling me no tears shed for nasrallah, who had blood on his hands, including american blood. But there are questions on What Tehran May or may not do in response. We heard from President Biden yesterday, even as u. S. Officials are grateful that hezbollah has been weakened, the president was clear. We need a ceasefire now. We does not want this to spiral further than it has. Hours later, israel went into lebanon, it appears. This is another moment when prime Minister Netanyahu and israel has taken the u. S. Advice and ignored it. Speak about the limits of american power, and also what could come next in this conflict. Ever since October 7th, ive been hearing from people in The Middle East that, Time And Again, they have been struck by the fact that the united states is not omnipotent in the way it used to be in that region. It can push for certain things, but those things dont necessarily materialize. Its pushed for a ceasefire around gaza. It hasnt happened. It can push Israel And Benjamin netanyahu not to go into lebanon, but it looks like, overnight, that is exactly what the israelis have done. Al albeit in a limited way. To what richard is saying, how much is enough for israel . How much does israel feel it needs to do In Lebanon . There are tunnels. There are facilities on the southern lebanese border with israel. Israel has spent a year trying to eliminate Item Networks in gaza. It hasnt succeeded in doing so. What does it need to do in Southern Lebanon for its people to feel safe they can live along that border . As the fighting continues, it may have won israel a little more maneuvering room, kind of in The Middle East for generally at the moment, but it is not the political solution which i think the administration here would say, certainly, is what eventually is needed, for not just the israelis but the lebanese and palestinians to feel safe. It also depends on the definition of limited. They used that in gaza, as well, and proceeded to change the definition as they went forward. Richard, you touched on this a minute ago. If you are in iran, the leadership, watching this play out right now, watching what israel has done in gaza, what its now doing In Lebanon, i wonder what youre thinking is that strategically. Prime Minister Netanyahu did say, addressing the people, when youre free, the moment will be coming sooner than you think. What are you thinking if youre iran . Remember, willie, last april, israel demonstrated its ability to penetrate iranian Air Space and pretty much do what i wanted to do. The iranians have to be careful not to give israel an opening to attack it directly. Israel could go after the energy structure, aspects of the nuclear program, and could weaken the regime, which is what mr. Netanyahu is getting at. The iranian leadership has to be careful here not to take things beyond a certain point. I think this poses a real dilemma to the people in iran. They dont like leaving buddies in hezbollah in a lurch. They like to back their proxies. But i think many in israel are ready to bring the war to iran. Its not a war they can win directly. They could do terrorism, sabotage, all over the world. The War Wont be necessarily a traditional battlefield war. My guess is they are calculating very carefully, particularly the new president of iran. Again, not clear how much authority he has here, but they are calculating. Escalation, i would say, does not serve iranian interest right now. Their dilemma is how do they back their proxies without getting pulled into a war directly that they cant prevail over against israel . Right now, everybody is calculating. Katty makes a really good point, which is, what is the israeli definition of success here . They can hurt hezbollah. They can maybe push them back temporarily, but what are they trying to accomplish . Again, i dont think it is physically removing the threat. I think it is changing the threat in hezbollah to people act with greater restraint toward israel. Psychological. Fascinating and dangerous dynamics at play. President emeritus on the council of foreign relations, richard haass, appreciate it, as always. This morning, Tens Of Thousands of Dock Workers are on strike at major ports from maine to texas. This comes after the industrys largest union failed to reach an agreement with the United States Maritime Alliance. The group that represents port management. Cnbc is reporting preparations for a strike have been under way in 14 american cities following a protracted Battle Over Wage Increases and the use of automation. Now, billions of dollars in trade has been stranded as the international Longshoremans Association launches its first strike since 1977. Lets bring in cnbcs frank holland. What more do we know about this . The Port Operation and the Longshoremens Union traded offers yesterday. The White House has taken additional steps to facile nate. Not mediate but just facilitate the talks, maintaining theyd not use the Tapp Hartley Act to keep ports open and force continued negotiations. New this morning on Social Media, there is a video from the Ila President making a fiery speech about the negotiations with Port Operators. In part, he said, were going to keep this going every day. Well be in and out. Well be on the news. Theres some profanity in there, but telling the members theyre going to win this thing. Saying to trust him, that the port Operators Cant last long. The Port Operators spelled out some of the details of the negotiations yesterday. They say they offered nearly a 50 Pay Increase in addition to tripling employer contributions to Retirement Plans and also strengthening Health Care. Also, they said theyd offer to retain the current language around automation and semiautomation, a key issue when it comes to the negotiations. Frank holland. So much, appreciate it. Youll be keeping close tabs on this, and well check back in with you. Jonathan lemire, the White House is invested in this and monitoring it closely. Dont want this to go on too long. As i said, the ports have been prepared for this, especially with the busy holiday shopping season, the Supply Chain questions that come in. But it adds another layer to this president ial race. Yet another issue. It certainly does. As frank said, the White House at this point not directly involved. Theyre facilitating, not intervening. Of course, President Biden has deemed himself the most proLabor President in history. Theyre watching this carefully. There are concerns. I was told yesterday that most analysts in the White House and some outside economists believe that if this lasts a few days, no real impact. But if it stretches a week or more, there will be a Ripple Effect that could impact the national economy, just at a moment when inflation started to cool. When we had a Federal Reserve rate cut. When people are feeling good about the economy. This can create bad headlines not just for this current administration but, of course, Vice President harris. This would become, undoubtedly, if not resolved within the next few days, a major campaign issue, as well. Major strike from Coast To coast. Well keep an eye on it. Meanwhile, the Death Toll this morning from helene continues to rise across six states after that devastating form ripped through the southeast. This morning, at least 125 people are dead in florida, georgia, South Carolina, tennessee, and virginia. A third of the deaths reported in North Carolina, where at least 40 people died as a result of Catastrophic Flooding, leaving entire communities, some of them swept away, others under several feet of water. Hundreds more people still missing. Millions of customers also remaining in the dark across those states. Rescue operations under way as families desperately wait to hear back from missing Loved Ones. Tomorrow, President Biden will take part in an Aerial Tour of asheville, North Carolina, to survey the Mindbending Damage you see in the pictures. Joining us from irwin, tennessee, correspondent Priscilla Thompson. Good morning. Whats the latest on the Recovery Efforts there, but also across the border in North Carolina . Reporter willie, as we enter day four of recovery here, there are 100 responders out searching through rubble, trying to find any signs of life they can. As they say, the mission is shifting from rescue to recovery. The mission is intensifying to find those who are missing. The floodwaters in tennessee have receded. But the pain is still flowing for some families. They are just desperate to find out where she is. Where shes been found. They just want news. Reporter Rosa And Monica are among the 150 people still unaccounted for in tennessee. Authorities say more than 100 responders are scouring debris, as efforts shifted from rescues to recovery. They confirm only three stormrelated deaths in the state so far. They used everything they had to save life that day. Some were saved. Were still searching for some. We all have hopes we will find some more lives. Reporter relatives say Rose And Monica were working at impact Plastics Factory when the water began to rise, and that they got into the back of a semitruck, trying to escape. A man who says he was also on that truck posted this Video Online, showing Water Rushing by, as cars and yellow pipes floated away. Their Family Members were in the back of an 18wheeler, Holding On To Pipes, calling 911 for help. That help didnt come. Reporter in a statement, impact plastics says when the Parking Lot and Service Road began to flood, employees were dismissed, but some remained. Boarding a neighboring Companys Truck as the flooding intensified. That truck tipped over, impact plastics says. Five people were rescued by helicopter, but six others were never found. We are devastated by the tragic loss of great employees, the company wrote. Loss made all the more painful by the wait for answers. They are really grieving. All they want is closure. They just want closure for their families. Some of those families may now have those answers, as we are learning that the Death Toll here has ticked up to six. At this point, there are 100 people missing according to the state. We are seeing similar stories play out across this area, including in North Carolina where there are many, many people still missing. Folks are working on the connectivity issues to try to get in touch with people. Theyre also trying to get those critical supplies, like Water And Gas and all those things as the Recovery Effort continues. Fema is putting up starlink so people can connect and tell their Loved Ones theyre okay. My gosh, the devastation, the scope of it from where you are in tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, georgia, florida, of course, its just shall staggering. Priscilla thompson, thank you so much. President Biden Headed to North Carolina. Former President Donald Trump visited Georgia Yesterday where he falsely claimed, several Times, the White House is ignoring the storm. It is not, of course. And ignoring requests from the states republican governor, Brian Kemp. The governor is doing a very good job. Hes having a hard time getting the president on the phone. I guess theyre not being responsive. The federal government is not being responsive. Theyre having a very hard time getting the president on the phone. He wont get on. Of course, the Vice President , shes out some place campaigning, looking for money. The governor needs to hes been trying to get them. Im sure theyre going to come through. But hes been calling the president , hasnt been able to get him. Thats another lie. Earlier in the day, Governor Kemp told reporters he did speak with President Biden. The president offered his assistance. The president just called me yesterday afternoon. I missed him and called him right back. He just said, hey, what do you need . I told him, you know, we got what we need. Well work through the federal process. He offered that if theres other things we need, to call him directly, which i appreciate that. President biden, of course, spoke to the governor of georgia, as the governor just underlined there. Later in the day, President Biden was asked about trumps claims and got fiery as he took questions from reporters in the oval office. Let me get this straight, hes lying. The governor told him he was lying. The governor told him he was lying. Ive spoken to the governor. I spent time with him, and he told me hes lying. I dont know why he does this. The reason i get so angry about it, i dont care what he says about me, but i care what he communicates to the people that are in need. He implies were not doing everything possible. We are. We are. You know, jonathan lemire, this is particularly disgusting, a lie, when people there needing help suggesting things about democrats, fema. Hes also suggested that the White House and this federal government is ignoring maga supporters in red counties. Thats, of course, not true. Just not even in this moment of Destruction And Devastation and people needing Clarity And Help so badly, cant put his ego and chief insults aside in the moment. Rooting against the country is one of the themes from Donald Trump. This is a particularly dangerous lie. If he is out there saying, hey, the federal government is ignoring those impacted by the storm, that may discourage those impacted by the storm from seeking help. State and federal officials are saying, look, were here. Reach out to us. Were trying to reach you and assist you in this time of need. Donald trump only thinking about himself. You know, he, of course, was in Georgia Yesterday. Potentially a strain on resources there, but he wanted to go to have the political photoop. Vice president Harris Sas Shell go in the days ahead, but she doesnt want to be a potential distraction from Recovery Efforts, katty. Charlie sykes said this earlier this morning, its not that trump is just shading the truth or exaggerating. Hes just flat out lying. These are complete fabrications, utter falsehoods. This one, in particular, strikes me as really dangerous. Yeah. I mean, its not unusual for storms to bring out political tensions. Ask Charlie Crist or chris christie. Theyve been in positions where theyve had a president from the opposite party and suffered retribution from their own party for embracing that president when they came to give help. This is completely the opposite of that. In the Donald Trump who is running for the presidency saying things that are not true. Also, its odd because it is demonstrably not true. Brian kemp said hes spoken to the president. The president said hes spoken to Brian Kemp. The republicans have said, yes, the federal aid is on its way. Fema is doing what it can. You wonder why Donald Trump is in this position where he is saying things that are so clearly provable not to be true in a way that doesnt necessarily help his campaign. If this is just about, again and again and again, angering his base enough that he makes sure they turn out and vote, if hes worried there may be some Drop Off in voting, that his Ground Game is not good enough, and this is the way he gets people to the polls, its hard to see what the strategy is. As you say, this is dangerous because peoples lives are at stake in georgia, in North Carolina at the moment, and they need all the help they can get. They need to know the help is coming. Thats also very important for them. Just absolutely toxic. By the way, he knows he can get away with it because he exists in a Media Ecosystem where itll be echoed, uncritically. Again, President Biden, of course, talked to republican governor Brian Kemp of georgia, and the governors across the region, about the destruction from the storm, to get people the help they need, whether theyre democrat or republican. Still ahead on Morning Joe, a republicanappointed judge in Fulton County strikes down georgias sixweek Abortion Ban. Well take a look at the new ruling and its political implications. Plus, minnesota governor Tim Walz, republican senator Jd Vance, the Running Mates face off tonight for the first time. Well discuss what we can expect to hear at that Vice President ial debate. Youre watching Morning Joe. Were back in 90 seconds. Tual cd my Car Insurance so i saved hundreds. With the money i saved i thought id get a Wax Figure of myself. Oh right in the Temporal Lobe beat it, punks only pay for what you need. Liberty, liberty, liberty, Liberty A judge in Fulton County, georgia, struck down the states strict sixweek Abortion Ban yesterday. That ruling now allows the procedure to resume and makes it legal in georgia up to 22 weeks of pregnancy. The ban originally signed into law by republican governor Brian Kemp back in 2019. The superior Court Judge explained in his ruling that liberty in georgia includes the power for a woman to control her own body. But he added, the power is not unlimited. Stating, quote, when a fetus growing inside a woman reaches viability, when society can assume Care And Responsibility for that separate life, then and only then may society intervene. Joining us now, legal correspondent and former litigator lisa rubin. Great to see you. Morning. A lot of people had been watching this case very, very closely to see where itd land. What was the decision ultimately by the judge here . Decision ultimately by the judge is that the prohibition on abortion, beyond that Sixweek Mark when a Fetus Heart Beat can be detected, is no longer good law. He said it is rooted in georgias own constitution. There is a recognition of a right to liberty. That liberty includes a liberty of privacy, and that georgias own law recognizes that that liberty of privacy is broader than the federal constitutional right. On that basis, he said, as you noted, though the state has a compelling interest in promoting fetal life, were balancing that against a Womans Liberty of privacy to control her own body. The States Interest is not so compelling as to overcome the womans right to control her body until the fetus is viable outside that body. This is that Debate Weve heard a lot since dobbs, which is the heartbeat. Six weeks versus viability at 22 weeks or wherever you set that standard. As of now, Women In Georgia Up To 22 weeks, because of this ruling, can get an abortion, but i assume this will be appealed again, perhaps all the way up to the Supreme Court . Yeah. There are some people who will be afraid to perform abortion in the intervening time period because this isnt just a ban on abortion, willie. This is a criminal prohibition on abortion. As judge mcburney, the Fulton County superior Court Judge who issued this decision notes, the woman herself could be prosecuted because of the way the statute is worded. That is a particularly pernicious place to be. He recognizes that all throughout his decision. I want to be clear with you and our viewers. This is almost a radical decision in its recognition of the right of woman to control their body. More importantly, to prevent against a sort of Involuntary Servitude or forced labor. There is a recognition here that women are not, as he says, collectively owned community property. They cannot be forced to carry a fetus before viability any more than you or i could be forced to give up a kidney. Thats a fairly radical conception of the right to abortion. It made a lot of women i know think, oh, my god, this is The End of judicial gaslighting. There is someone here who sees us. The end of the idea of women being collective property being considered radical is extraordinary. Yes. Lisa, do we think that this ruing can serve as a template for other states with restricting Abortion Bans put in place . It depends on what the States Law is constitutionally, right . Each state is interpreting its own constitution. Some of the other states that have recognized a fundamental right to abortion in their States Constitution dont do so from a liberty perspective. They do so, for example, on equal protection grounds. Here, though, the judge is saying georgia has a long history of recognizing a broad right to privacy. Thats why he leaves it there. On the other hand, i think there are pieces of this opinion that could be very helpful for other judges to latch onto. In particular, he really disavows textualism and originalism. Those are the constitutional methods of the day. He said the problem with looking for the original public meaning of constitutional text is it excludes half the population. Women who had limited rights in the 18 im sorry, in the 1860s, for example, when the provisions were put into place, and black women who had no rights at all. Thats explcit in this opinion. Katty . Women in georgia have a reprieve for a moment, and women in other states where there are similar lawsuits may have similar reprieves for the moment until the reprieves themselves are challenged by higher courts. Presumably, the only way this gets completely resolved and that there is a standard that allows women to have access to abortion up to 22 weeks or viability would be for some decision to be made by congress or a reversal at the Supreme Court. I think, katty, thats true. Although, theoretically, the final view should be georgias Supreme Court interpreting its own constitution. What makes this decision really important is that, again, if folks like former President Trump are saying abortion is left up to states, this is a state Court Judge interpreting his own constitution. Yes, it will likely be appealed all the way up to georgias Supreme Court. But the text here that matters is Georgias Constitution, not the federal constitution. While congress could certainly make abortion legal all across the nation for georgias women, right now, what really matters is their constitution. Judge Mcburney Writing in the opinion, a mere six week it is a point that many, if not most women, are unaware or, at best, unsure if theyre pregnant. He believes it is too soon. Putting it at 22 weeks for now. Lisa rubin, thanks so much. Appreciate it. Up next, a doubleheader On The Last Day of major league Baseballs Season decides the final two n. L. Playoff spots. We have more on his life and career. Reporter Peter Edward rose was born april 14th, 1941, in cincinnati, ohio. The same city hed later take by storm as charlie hustle. The son of a former Boxer And Semipro football player, rose signed with his hometown reds out of High School in 1963. As a member of the juggernaut known as the big red machine, rose won backtoback titles with cincinnati in 1975 and 1976. A lifetime. 303 hitter, he belted 200 hits, a major League Record, ten Times. 21 pitch into left center. There it is reporter on september 11th, 1985, Pete Rose broke ty cobbs alltime hits record, of 4,191. He owns more records than any other player in history, including atbats, singles, and games played. After retiring in 1986, rose went on to manage the reds, but his days in the majors were numbered. In 1989, Pete Rose was landed a lifetime ban from baseball after an investigation revealed his betting on games while managing the reds. Then in 1990, less than a year after the ban, rose was sentenced to five months in a federal prison for tax evasion. Still denying the betting charges, rose was denied reinstatement in 1992 and 1997. There are some things that are so wrong, that we dont lightly forgive them. This is a very wrong thing. Reporter in his 2004 autobiography, my prison without bars, rose admitted to gambling on baseball while managing the reds, but said it was never against his own team. Did you bet on baseball . Yes, i did. That was my mistake. Reporter Contrition And Admission fell short again for rose in 2015, when commissioner Rob Manfred denied his appeal, citing Roses Lack of Change And Acceptance of wrongdoing. I want Baseball And Pete rose to be friends. Thats all i want. So i can say, im not on outsider looking in. Reporter in 2016, a day many thought would never come. Election to the cincinnati Reds Hall of fame and the retiring of Roses Number 14. Pushing limits on The Field made him a Hall Of Famer. Pushing them off The Field kept him out. Nbcs Kurt Gregory reporting there. Lets bring into the Conversation Msnbc ContributorMike Barnicle. Great to see you. Theres been so much debate over, gosh, 35 years now, whether Pete Rose should be in the Hall Of Fame, whether he should not be in the Hall Of Fame, how we should think about his career because of the admission of gambling, though he says he never bet against his own team. Where are you on the question of Pete Rose and the Hall Of Fame . Well, you know, willie, i think he belongs in the Hall Of Fame, but everything he did, positive and negative, ought to be put on the plaque. There are a few other people in the Hall Of Fame, few other players who were not models of civilization or civility. Just recognize who Pete Rose was. He played 25 years. 25 years in the major leagues. He averaged 194 hits per season. He was a bad guy off The Field. Lets get that on the record. But he was a spectacular player. A spectacular player. Yeah, put him in the Hall Of Fame, but put it on the plaque. Mike, for people who sort of only know the Gambling Part of Pete Rose, you started to touch on it. Can you speak to what kind of a ballplayer he was . The numbers speak for themselves. 4,200 some hits, which as john said earlier, is a record that probably, its hard to imagine that being eclipsed. What kind of player was Pete Rose . He was an incredible player. The kind of Player Youd want on your team. The kind of player who played hard every out, every inning, every game, every year. I first met Pete Rose on october 22nd, early in the afternoon of october 22nd, 1975. It was the afternoon after the night before, which was game six of the 1975 World Series. Fisk stood in the batters box, eastwick for the Cincinnati Reds on the mound. Swung, the ball soared in the air. Mike weisman, former guy who worked here, directed the game. They had a camera set down low. Fisk waving the ball fair. The ball was fair. Red sox won game six. The next afternoon, october 22nd, i approached Pete Rose. It was about 2 30 in the afternoon. He was standing in the lawn of Fenway Park alongside the visitors dugout. I approached him with some trepidation because of his attitude, seeming attitude toward everything and everybody, snarling. He was a snarling kind of a guy. I asked him some stupid question. I was a Kid Working for the boston globe. I asked, like, geez, how do you get over losing a game like that Last Night and show up to play today . He looked at me and said, what . I are epet repeated the questio. He said, playing Last Night in that game was one of the honors of My Life. That was the greatest game ive ever participated in. Wow. That was Pete Rose, too. Pete rose was also a guy who probably gambled on the games he was playing that night. We dont know. But he admitted to gambling in the mid 1990s. If he found contrition earlier, maybe we wouldnt be talking about whether he should or should not be in the Hall Of Fame. Thats the dichotomy of Pete Rose. He gambled on the game but had reverence for it. He loved playing baseball. I think he should be in the Hall Of Fame. What happened, the suspension, put it on the plaque. Should be marked, no question. But i think the other image of rose is that headfirst slide. It epitomizes the grit. Gave 110 all the time. Including in an allstar game where he barreled over the catcher, something that would never happen today. We should point out, this entire segment has been an elaborate ruse for you to get the Carlton Fisk Home run into the show. It worked. Yeah. Mike, lets talk Playoff Baseball. Major league playoffs set after the doubleheader in atlanta between the braves and mets. Extending the regular season by a day with a monday finish. Lindor gets under one to center field. Harris near the wall, and its out of here Francisco Lindor flips the script with a Tworun Homer. The mets go ahead. Tworun Home Run in the ninth inning, just capping a great, wild, back and forth game. Especially over the final two innings. Sending the mets to the postseason with an 87 victory. Now, theyre in. There is a second game. The braves have to win to get into the playoffs or their season is over. They did it. They earned a wild Card Berth with a 31 win over the mets in game two, eliminating the diamondbacks from playoff contention. The mets and braves, best of three wild Card Series starting today. No rest for the weary. Traveling back to milwaukee for game one against the brewers. The padres and the braves. Orioles host the Kansas City royals. Tigers and astros. Mike, we were saying if not for ohtani, lindor is your national league mvp. What a season he had. What a way to cap it yesterday. Hands down, hed be the mvp. Naturally, ohtani is a galactic figure, so great. Francisco lindor shows up when he has to show up. He was the captain of the team yesterday. He was incredible. That was one of the most exciting Ball Games ive watched in a long, long time. I just couldnt get over the Exhaustion Factor in the game. The back and forth, the mets coming back, then the braves coming back. The mets finally winning it. There is nothing quite like Playoff Baseball, willie. It separates itself from the other sports. They play again today. Baseball is an every day delight. That was the game of the year. On the final day of the regular season. It looked like the mets were about to outmets themselves, having late lead, blowing it. You thought this improbable season was going to come to a crashing, heartbreaking defeat, but they did win. Then, you know, obviously, willie, didnt have much to play for in the second game. Im sure they would have loved to have sent their rival braves home, but they rested the regulars, atlanta got the win they needed. Mike derosa of Mlb Network is coming on later to preview the playoffs. Your team is in it, mine isnt, we dont need to talk about it, Playoff Baseball is still the best. Its a lot more fun in New York when both teams are in the playoffs. Yankees and the mets. Mike, today is the 100th birthday of president Jimmy Carter. He has been in Hospice Care for some time now. He turns 100 years old. Says he plans to vote. He wants to have his voice heard in this election. 100 years old, mike. What are your Thoughts Today . You know, no matter what you think about Jimmy Carter politically, no matter what you thought about his presidency, he has been a Model Citizen and a model for all former president s once they leave office. Every day, every day has been a portrait in character, a portrait in patriotism, and a portrait of a man, despite his age, even in the 90s and even at 100, still doing well by the united states of america. Jimmy carter. His work with habitant of humanity, highlighted later in this show by Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, joining us to talk about what theyre doing. By the way, the White House is putting out a 100, a 100 on the lawn of the White House with The Message, happy birthday, President Carter. Mike, well see you soon. Thank you. With the election just five weeks away, its getting close, were taking a look this morning at the Money Race. Lets bring in former Treasury Official, Morning Joe economic analyst Steve Rattner. Steve, good morning. One campaign that looks like, from the charts behind you, is far ahead at this moment in fundraising. Ive been through a lot of political cycles, raised a lot of money, including for Vice President harris. Ive never seen anything quite like this, as i will take you through. Yeah, lets start with the Money Race through The End of august. Well look at the blue, of course, of the democrats, the red, the republicans. Weve got a bunch of pieces here. This is the socalled Hard Money the candidates raised. This is money raised by the party committees. Democratic national committee. Republican national committee. You can see, substantial outraising there. Also, it is important to note, 42 of the donors to the Biden Harris Campaign were small donors, under 200. 32 for President Trump. Thats a reversal of the past when trump had more small donor than the democrats did. The small donors are out in force. Important number to note, cash on hand. Thats what they have left to spend. You can see, again, the democrats have a lead in terms of cash on hand. One question you might ask, how does this compare to other cycles . You can see here, the Biden Harris Campaign is on track to pass the last two cycles. These are inflationadjusted numbers, making them more significant if they hit a record, which it looks like they will. Heres whats exceptional. Trump is way short of where he was last time. Only raised about half as much money at this point as he had in 2020. A bit more than he had back in 2016. Obviously, steve, as we move to your second chart, everything changed when President Biden stepped aside and made way for Vice President harris. Just sort of energizing the base and sending donations through the roof. This is the extraordinary thing, willie. The most extraordinary thing i think any of us who have been involved in this for a while have seen. You can see through the spring, Biden And Trump were kind of piddling along, to coin a phrase, raising a decent amount of money. Heres what happened. The president dropped out on july 21st. In the month of july, so only with ten days left in the month, 204 Million raised by the then harris campaign. That carried over into august. 190 Million versus 45 million, 48 Million down here. Well see what september brings us when those numbers come out. Extraordinary outpouring of money raising. Heres the other thing that is exceptional, during his six months or so of running, President Biden had 2 Million unique donors, a reasonable number. Vice President Harris passed that number in nine days. She passed the 2 Million biden raised and is up to 4 million. If this indicates has any relevance to popular support, this is an extraordinary outpouring of support. Kamala harris changed this race in in ways, but especially as you look at the graph, in the fundraising. Your third chart now, the senate, the house, super pac fundraising. How does that look like now . To check in on all that, a similar pattern without the drama of the Kamala Harris machine, so to speak. In the senate, Democrats Outraising Republicans and have more cash on hand. Again, a good position for them to be in. In the house, a similar pattern. More money raised. More cash on hand. Democrats pretty wellpositioned to go into this. Lastly, what ive talked about so far is what we call Hard Money, what we call party committee money. The third bucket of money, which is a huge bucket, are the famous Super Pacs we talk about. Democrats are not doing quite as well. So far, and we only have expenditure numbers, not money raised numbers, Super Pacs associated with republicans spent over 1 billion. Some advocating for republicans. Some advocating against democrats. Democrats have spent 785 million. Not a huge difference but a tilt to the republicans. You know, when you add all these numbers up, it comes to billions and billions of dollars. I heard katty say the other day, a Uk ElectionCosts Something like 50 Million pounds. This is an extraordinary use of resources. When you look at whats going on in North Carolina, in places, just think about what this several billion dollars could have done if it had been applied there instead of the crazy political campaigns that we run. It is an obscene amount of money. Steve, before i let you go, after the charts there, a general question about the state of the economy. Theres been so much from Donald Trump and others thrown in about the country going to hell and all that. When you look at revising Gdp Number of numbers, low unemployment, the markets soaring, the fed rate, what is your snapshot of how this economy is doing . Exactly right. It looks like, amazingly, the Federal Reserve has engineered a soft landing, gotten inflation down almost exactly to its 2 target without triggering a recession. We continue to add jobs. The gdp continues to expand. There is pressure on consumers at the lower end, no question about that, from inflation and from having spent the covid payments they got. All in all, this is an economy that just continues to march along at a very reasonable, not extraordinary, but reasonable growth rate. That, of course, is also good news for the Vice President. As you point out, the election about a month away. Five weeks from today. Morning joe economic analyst Steve Rattner, thanks so much, as always. We appreciate it. Coming up, well bring you the latest on the escalating situation in The Middle East this morning after israels new Ground Offensive into Southern Lebanon. Were back in two minutes. Wow, what a beautiful live picture from our friends at wnbc. Chopper 4 high over manhattan after 7 00 on a tuesday morning. Welcome back to Morning Joement and it is tuesday, october 1st. I get the fact that israel may be launching a limited operation into lebanon. Are you aware of that . Are you comfortable with their plan . Im more aware than you might know, and im comfortable with them stopping. We should have a ceasefire now. Coming up in a bit on Morning Joe, we will speak live with Israels Ambassador to the united states. Meanwhile, Tens Of Thousands of Dock Workers are on strike from maine to texas. Lets bring in the chairman of the democratic national committee, jaime harrison. Great to have you with us. A lot to talk about, including the Vice President ial Debate Tonight and the state of this president ial race. But youre a south carolinian. Youve been through the hurricanes. The swath of destruction were seeing from florida up through georgia and the carolinas, into tennessee, what are you hearing from your Home State . You know, i was just back home. Willie, it breaks my heart. I have so many family and friends in georgia, tennessee, florida, South Carolina, North Carolina. I was just telling you all, we were planning to go to asheville to Omni Grove for thanksgiving. We didnt want to cook. We wanted to go and hike with our boys. It just breaks my heart. We spend so much time there. There are so many good people in those communities. Theyre desperately crying out for help. You know, i had some good friends who lost their home. Home burned down. Thank god, they were able to get out of it. Its devastating in so many ways. I just hope that we can put partisanship aside and just help people. Just help people. Donald trump, im talking specifically to you. Lets put all this noise aside, and lets focus on helping these people who desperately just need their brothers and sisters to be good keepers of them. The good news is the adults are doing exactly what youre saying. President biden is, in fact, talking to Governor Kemp in georgia. Theyre doing the things they have to do. Donald trump, of course, has to make political hay by telling outright lies. Yeah. Its just so sad to see. We just all need to roll up our sleeves and help in whatever way we can. If it is sending money, if it is volunteering, folks, just lets focus on helping these very, very good people. I remember Hurricane Hugo that hit South Carolina. We didnt have electricity for three weeks. As a kid, my mom said, we were going to be barbecuing. I thought it was fun. But you didnt have gas, electricity, and it was hot. Its devastating to see this, and it breaks my heart every time. These good people will need everybodys help for a long time to come. In for the long haul. Lets turn to the Vice President ial debate. Tim walz and Jd Vance of ohio will face off in The One And OnlyVice President ial Debate Tonight. Cbs news hosting the event here in New York. Itll be moderated by norah Odonnell And Margaret brennan. There will be no live factchecking by the moderators, but the broadcast will feature a Qr Code on the screen which will link to a realtime falkcheck by cbs journalists so you can follow along. There will not be a live audience inside the Debate Hall for the 90minute event. Unlike the two president ial debates, microphones will not be muted while the other candidate is speaking. Mr. Chairman, what should we expect tonight . What is the objective for Governor Walz . Youll see a stark contrast between representative of a party who wants to take us back, who believe americas best days are in her past, and then youll see someone who is good, genuine. The good, funny uncle you like to hang out with. But who is going to talk about how we can help people get a leg up, how were going to move all americans ahead. You know, listen, Tim Walz didnt go to yale. Im of yale. When you go to yale, they teach you how to debate. You can be a skilled debater. The one thing they cant teach you is genuineness. They cant teach you authenticity, empathy. I can tell you, Jd Vance doesnt have any of that. This is a man who was willing to lie about his own constituents. Hell say, im lying about whats going on. But we know in terms of Tim Walz, this is a man who brightens up the room every time he walks in there because people know that he sees them, that he hears them, but most importantly, he values them. Thats the contrast i hope the american people will see on the debate stage. Jd vance will be asked, undoubtedly, about his comments in springfield. Those are people he represents. Legal immigrants contributing to the community. Hell be asked about his comments there, his criticism, intense in many regards, of Donald Trump several years back. Theres always this question of whether a Vice President ial debate even matters. What will you be looking for tonight . First of all, i think conventional wisdom will tell you it doesnt matter, Wont Change the state of the race. But i think conventional i disagree with conventional wisdom. There was a 1998 or 88 series, the temptations, aired on nbc. Iconic line is, aint nobody coming to see you, otis. The character is telling the other band members, theyre coming to see mer, not coming to see you. One can argue you can apply it to the president ial debates. People arent voting for the Vice President. Theyre voting for the president. But i think, in this election, given the people on the ballot, Vice PresidentKamala Harris, a Vice President , okay, Vice President s matter. Donald trump, who is the oldest candidate in this race, and there is a real question if Jd Vance will be ready to serve on day one should something happen to former President Trump, if he were to be elected. This matters. And this is an election where the Vice President ial candidates have been some of the most explosive things that have happened have been because of what Jd Vance has said. This debate is more about them than i think itd usually be. I will be watching for how they handle that, and also pivot back to the top of the ticket. Thats really what theyre supposed to be there to do. Do not harm. Make sure you get The Message out, draw the contrast. Dont make it about you. Unfortunately, this is uniquely, i think, really about the contrast between Jd Vance and Governor Walz. Claire, this is also, this debate is unique in its timing. At least for now, its the last word. Were not expecting another president ial debate. Usually, the Vp Debate is in the middle of the debates. This one could be the last big moment like this. What do you think Governor Walz needs to do . In particular, are there areas he needs to shore up the ticket, needs to address things perhaps the Vice President , to this point, hasnt . Well, i think it is important he not try to do too much. He needs to be relatable. As jaime said, he is naturally authentic. This isnt a guy who puts on, you know, as famous people once said, he doesnt use a Dollar Word when a Nickel Word will do. Love it. Whereas, Jd Vance believes in Dollar Words. He is a little bit sanctimonious and preaches at people and comes off as kind of like, im smarter than you. I think it is more about tone than it is about content. I will say this, im sure that Tim Walz is prepared that theyre going to try to make him a raging liberal in a flannel suit. Yup. He will have to be gently pushing back, making sure, you know, caring about whether kids are eating at school, Health Care, whether women have the ability to control their own bodies are not radical ideas. Those are ideas widely supported in america. Jaime, on a topic different than the debate specifically, i wanted to ask you, it seems to me at this Point Trump has given up trying to convince people that are undecided. He is going darker and really more gloomy and desperate and almost trying to find more voters to come out for him. He is trying to get those low propensity white voters that are mad at the world, and try to get them to care enough to come out and vote for him. So really, i think at this point, this election is about who is going to show up. Talk to me about why we should be optimistic about who is going to show up for harris and walz. What are the Registration Numbers looking like . What are the early voting numbers looking like . Is him going so dark, is that, in fact, a motivator for our low propensity voters to finally come out and say, hey, we dont want to go back to this chaos . You know, we know in close elections, the margin of difference is the Ground Game. What Donald Trump did when he took over the rnc was he destroyed you can have criticisms of ronna mcdaniel, but she was at least building some type of Ground Operation in the rnc. All of that disappeared. He just gutted the whole process. He shepherded out to Third Party groups, which Third Party groups are helpful on the margins, but they dont do what is necessary. Look at what were doing at the dnc right now. I just announced that we and Howard Dean started the 50 state strategy, but the first time in one election year, we have given grants out to every single state party. Even in our democrats abroad in territories. We have a Ground Operation that we have been building for the last 3 1 2 years that is strong and only getting stronger. Thousands of volunteers signed up when Kamala Harris became the nominee. Florida, were at 50,000 new volunteers. In North Carolina, similar. In pennsylvania. We have the apparatus in order to put those volunteers on the ground, making phone calls, out there pushing people to the polls. I feel really, really good about the difference we have there on the ground as compared to the republicans. I dont know what they have. You know well, you know, infrastructure matters. At least when i used to do elections, thats how you won them. We had Dan Canon on from the harris campaign, on our show sunday. He talked about the infrastructure and whatnot. I Cant Help but think about the women Melissa Murray and i talked to for our special, road to 2024. Black women, oldest millenials, 24. These were my age folks, 44. They understand the stakes of the election but dont know if theyll vote. What struck me in the conversation with dan, he said theyre doing mobilization and persuading the people who need to be persuaded. There are base voters who need to be persuaded. Are you concerned . They said their internals are tight, if not a little running behind. This is going to be a tight election. Its going to be a tight election. You have to persuade everybody. Its a choice for every single group. Its important to have the right message, but most importantly, to have the right messengers. SomeTimes, thats the key to Unlock Somebody to actually go out. So you will see folks who can appeal to millenials, who can appeal to genz, appeal to genxers, and talk to them on the level about the values they have and why it is important for them to get out there. You will see this massive, many of us are already out there. Im five states this week. But a massive Turnout Effort where we are talking with folks about the things that are important to them. And figuring out, what is the trigger . Maybe its not you go to vote for yourself, but maybe youre going to vote for your grandma. You want to protect her Social Security and medicare. If youre a husband or a boyfriend, Youll Vote for your girlfriend, to make sure she has reproductive Freedom And Control of her own body. We just had a story in South Carolina, in my hometown, where a young girl, 23 years old, junior in college, was arrested for homicide because she had a miscarriage. That is the america that Donald Trump has now created. You have to, as a woman, a young woman, have to be concerned that you may get arrested if you miscarry your baby. That is the postroe world. That is what people have to understand, that is on the ballot this november. Katty kay has one for you, mr. Chairman. Chairman, there have already been dozens of law enforcements, preemptively launched, particularly by republicans around the country, looking like it is already being set up to contest the results after november the 5th. What are you doing from your side to prepare for that onslaught of likely legal challenges in the event of a close election . Listen, we have a bunch of great attorneys, marc elias, and others who have been doing things for a long time now. We have the greatest Voter Protection Program in the history of the dnc. You saw it at work during the midterms. It was the quietest Voter Protection Midterm weve probably had, at least in My Lifetime. Were ready and willing to fight wherever we need to in order to protect the right of all americans to vote. Thats in stark difference between these parties, right . Democrats, we want everybody to vote. We dont care if youre democrat, republican, or independent. Yes, we would love for you to vote for the democratic party, but if youre american and you have the right, you should be able to exercise that. Republicans, look at them, they are trying to suppress the vote. They dont want people to go out to vote. Theyll put hurdles in front of that. They will sue everybody in order to keep you away from the polls. That should tell you something. Theyre empty in terms of policy. They cant get into the arena and have a debate and a discussion because they know they will lose. The only way they can win is if they keep you from voting. Thats why i say to anybody, go to iwillvote. Com. If you have any issues on election day, democrat, republican, independent, we have lawyers on the ready right there. Or Text Vote to 70888. Text vote to 70888. We have lawyers that will help you with any issues you may have in your polling precinct. Before we let you go, mr. Chairman, millions of democrats across the country, many in our audience, ride the wave of the polls. The New YorkTimes says shes going to lose. This one says shes up by seven or eight points. Just to sort of level set, how are you all inside the party, and how is the campaign feeling five weeks from today is election day, how are you feeling about the state of the race . If youre a chair of a party, you Cant Help but be nervous, right . Youre always nervous going into an election day. But i feel confident because i believe in The End of the day, the american people are going to do whats in the best interest of this country. That is to put somebody in the White House who believes in all of americans, who believes in Joy And Hope and unity. Not someone who preaches bigotry, hhatred, and division. Polls are tight. I believe theyre going to be tight until election day. But we have the apparatus. We have the infrastructure. We have The Message. We have the messenger. Now, all we need are for the people to do what the people can only do. Which is exercise their right to vote. Folks, go out and vote, vote early. Take a Friend Or Family member with you. We need to break the back of this division and this malaise that Donald Trump has brought to america. I believe that we can do it in this election. Chairman of the democratic national committee, jaime harrison, mr. Chairman, great to talk to you. Thanks for being here. Thanks for having me. Nine years ago, author, coates, surged onto the scene with his groundbreaking book, between the world and me. Framed as a letter to his teenage son about race in america, The Book was hailed by Tni Morrison as, quote, required reading. Now, he has a new book structured as a series of letters, this time to his students at howard university, titled The Message. It is a Firstperson Account of coates trips to three distinctly personal places. Senegal, carolina, and The Middle East. The bestselling author joins us now. Thank you for being here. Thank you for having me. Lets start with how you came to the structure of the letters to your students and why these three places. How did i come to the structure . The thing i want everybody to always remember is you guys interact with The Book after its already done. Its not clear to me when im writing that i actually have a book. The structure actually kind of evolved over time. Id taken the trips, gone to places. One of the cases that The Book makes is that it is very, very hard to write in depth about anything that you havent seen directly. I wanted to write about places i actually went to. Those were the three. It just sort of came together into a book. Why those places . What sort of The Book is titled The Message. What are The Messages youre trying to get across about the three locations . In all three places, the power of story and the power of narrative are very, very important. In senegal, obviously for african americans, for those of us who are looking to trace our lineage, africa is a very, very important place. South carolina, the story of the lost cause. How that shaped america. Obviously, to israel, to the West Bank, to palestine, and how story, as far as im concerned, shaped our coverage and how we perceive everything going on over there. You write about columbia, South Carolina, and how you feel about your book being banned. You actually go to a School Board Meeting in South Carolina to support a teacher who was told to stop teaching your book. Tell us about that experience. Well, it was the great mary wood. I say great because she made a decision to risk her job in order to teach between the world and me. The thing i hold to is i went down there feeling like i was going into the lions den, expecting a great deal of hostility. Certainly, you know, thats there. But, actually, what i found, was a very engaged community, that maybe was not so much obsessed with between the world and me, but were obsessed with their children and children having the opportunity to develop ideas, think and learn for themselves. It was inspiring to see. Im curious, after The Book that i think you would acknowledge, a lot of attention. Maybe a surprise to you. I dont know. Yes. So much attention. Then what followed was way too much controversy. Did you go into this book with some trepidation about that . Were you worried . You, unwittingly, had become a polarizing figure in American Literature . Hmm, i go into every book with trepidation, but i dont go into it so much worried about me becoming polarizing, what people are going to say about me. I go into it because i might fail at writing The Book, right . Writing books is a very, very hard job. What happens after that is just totally out of my control. I do my best to not think about it or to not let It Influence what i write about. Katty kay in washington has the next question. So for this book, you also went to israel. You have been very critical of the Israelis Treatment of the palestinians. Im not sure whether you went for this trip for the reporting before or after October 7th, but put what you found in the context of those attacks. I did. It was may 2023. Like i said, i went to the West Bank. I went to, you know, cities throughout israel. I went to haifa, jerusalem, telaviv, south hebron hills, ramallah. One thing that people told me the whole time i was there was, you have to go to gaza. That turned out to be a lot more difficult than i wanted. It was ten days. When i came back, i was trying to, you know, get back. I was supposed to go in october. Obvious reasons, i could not go. Look, my politics are the politics of nonviolence. There is nothing within that politics that can watch 1,000 people be murdered, be massacred, and be okay with that and think that that is somehow justified. The only thing i would add to that, which i will insist on it, which is very, very important, i wish that this country was more interested in gaza before October 7th. Gaza was described to me while i was over there as the largest Openair Jail in the world. I did not see it for myself. I wanted to. I was not able to. But were part of that. Were part of the maintenance of that. Evidence for that fact was everywhere around me during the trip. You know, people will say, i mean, the conversation around just the region, even prior to October 7th, its complicated. Its not as black and white. Theres nuance there. But you write that what you saw reminded you of the jim crow south. There are people that would say, this is not that. I would tell them to go. I would tell them to go. I would tell them, drive down the roads in the West Bank where youre only allowed to go certain places if youre either palestinian or youre israeli settler. Id tell them to go to hebron and watch how people whose ancestors lived there for generations cannot walk down certain streets. Talk to palestinians about a border system. Seized israelis to access of water four Times more than palestinians. Id ask whether they think it is okay for a state to label itself as the only democracy in The Middle East. Wrecks citizenship for onehalf of its operation. For the other half, to erect a citizenship where a residency or stateless status that is somehow less. I dont know how that correspondents without definition to what a democracy is. It was immediately familiar to me as somebody who has been raised on the Tales Of Jim Crow and whose parents were born in the jim crow. The complication, and, of course, curious to get your thoughts, Gaza Run by hamas, a terror group. Id dispute the idea it was run by hamas. The reason, you do not have Freedom Of Movement in and out, no airport. You dont have the right to fish and make a living. If you have a child that needs cancer treatment, you need permits to get out to actually get that cancer treatment. They ran it within a certain context. I need to be absolutely clear about this. This is in no way, in no way to say hamas is great or hamas is good or to sympathize with hamas. But i do think we need to be accurate about what the Power Dynamic is there and what the effects of that are. Again, your visit there, may 2023, ahead of the October 7th attacks. Lets turn on a Closing Note to the third location, senegal. What drew you there, and what did you find . Im glad were closing on that. That was the most personal for me. My family is from berlin, maryland, the tip of the eastern shore. Weve been there since we were enslaved in in country. It is very, very difficult and was difficult to put into words what it meant to sit on the tip of africa and look back out to the place where my family was from. It was four days of mourning. I dont know that i actually completely saw the country because everywhere i went, i saw ghosts. It was a deeply personal and moving trip for me. All right. We will leave it there. Important book. The new book The Message is on sale now. New york Times bestselling author, thank you for being here. Thank you. Coming up, well turn to sports and preview major League Baseball playoffs and bring in Mark Derosa. Well talk about Pete Roses complicated legacy after his Death Yesterday at the age of 83. Welcome back to Morning Joe. 38 in the morning. Well talk a little Playoff Baseball with the great Claire Mccaskill in a moment. Sorry about the cardinals. Put that aside. First, lets talk about the state of the race. I asked Chairman Harrison about that a few moments ago. Taking everything in, the Roller Coaster Ride of polls we get every day, which has people going like this, oh, were doing well. Oh, no, were doomed. In a snapshot of yesterday, you had Donald Trump, even in this moment, where so many people need so much help, seeking to create division, to divide people, and saying that the biden administration is refusing to help red counties, maga voters. Thats not true. Saying that he hasnt spoken to the governors of these states. Of course he has. Fema is on the ground. Whats your sense of where things are five weeks out . First, lets just be really honest how frustrating it is that its close. I mean, thats what i hear more than anything else. How can it be this close . How can it be this close . Objectively, if you look at this guy, hes a mess. Hes a mess. The way he talks. The way he lies. I think in the Debate Tonight, one of the challenges that walz is going to have is to say to him, you know, are you comfortable lying this much . You know, theyve kind of patented the idea that you can lie and say the other guys are lying and get away with it, when its not true. Right. Its just not true. Right. So ill tell you what im looking at more than the polls. Early voting requests, which democrats are, as usual, requesting many more ballots than the republicans. Now, part of this is on the republicans because Donald Trump has taught them not to early vote, which is really stupid, along with all the other stupid stuff hes done. But then Registration Numbers. The Registration Numbers are very good across the country for younger voters, for the women voters, for the voters that, in these polls, are reliably in favor of Kamala Harris. So those two things because right now, willie, i think it is about who shows up. I dont think it is about as much persuasion as it is who shows up. Katty, we have to assume a subplot will be Jd Vances past criticism of trump, suggesting he may be Americas Version of hitler. Thatll be a telling moment for the republican ticket. How do you see it going . Yeah, interesting moment there. Weve also seen Jd Vance suggesting that Donald Trump doesnt always tell the Truth And Siding with the women that have accused Donald Trump of harassment. How does walz use that . How much time does he spend attacking Jd Vance and attacking Donald Trump . How much time does he spend really focused on Kamala Harris . Because some suggesting that people still feel she is fuzzy, they dont totally understand where her policies are. Thats what theyre telling pollsters. There is a need to get Kamala Harris out there, and she doesnt have another debate chance. How does Walz Juggle needing to respond to Jd Vance, really respond to Donald Trump, not d vance, and then spending most of his time making the case, the theory of the case for Kamala Harris . All right. When we come back, well talk major League Baseball playoffs. They begin today. Came down to the very last day, plus one yesterday. Doubleheader in atlanta. Well do it with the great Mark Derosa of the Mlb Network. Well be right back with mark. Dont mind me. Im just the flu. Im quite harmless, really. The braves are going to grab the lead back lets go a Basesclearing Rbi double, and its 76, atlanta. Do you believe it . Lindor gets under one to center field. Harris going back. Back near the wall. And its out of here linsanity again Francisco Lindor flips the script with a Tworun Homer, and the mets go in front 87. Oh, wow the New York mets wild comeback in game one of yesterdays doubleheader. Back and forth they went in atlanta. Francisco lindors goahead Home Run in the ninth inning securing the mets an 87 win. Importantly, a spot in the postseason. Braves also get into the playoffs with a 30 win over the mets in game two. Those teams take The Field again today. The playoffs get under way with the best of three Wild Card round. Joining us now, 16year Mlb Veteran and Mlb Network analyst, Mark Derosa. Mark, its always so great to see you, my friend. Wow, what a game in game one yesterday in atlanta. That was playoff drama. We got it. Looked like it was swinging the braves way with the basesclearing triple, and then lindor, who, as we said earlier, if not for ohtani, would be the n. L. Mvp, steps up to put the mets in the playoffs. Willie, just an in uhoh. Trouble. We got a bad connection, mark. Oh, my friend, Mark Derosa. Lets work on the Zoom Connection and will get into that. John, we were talking about it earlier, that was playoff energy. We just noted the camera is shaking as those runs are scoring for the braves. Thats what the playoffs feel like. Extraordinary. You figure, this is a mets team that had a tremendous season, slumped here at The End, and itd be so mets to then get swept in the Doubleheader Yesterday and miss the playoffs. It sure looked bad for them here in the bottom of the eighth. Then this Years Team is different. Give Lindor Credit with the Home Run. It is a tall order, to get on the plane after the doubleheader, claire, fly to milwaukee, play a very good brewers team, excellent Chris Sale their ace likely out with back spasms. The padres are picked to win the whole thing. The small market teams that make it into the playoffs, and our missouri Kansas City royals, which i love the royals unless they are playing the cardinals. Thats the only time i dont cheer for the royals. By the way, they play a stones throw away from the Kansas City chiefs. Kansas city is basking in a lot of fun at this moment to have both October Baseball and the chiefs still undefeated. If this postseason feels really wide open, the dodgers, obviously, have ohtani making his playoff debut, mookie betts, freddie freeman, your yankees, big Budget Payroll they have. The royals last year lost over 100 games. This year in the playoffs. The orioles continuing their turn around after a long stretch of failure. The tigers a great run to get in. A lot of new teams this year, which feels fun. Bobby Witt Jr. , getting a good look at him today. Exciting young player. And the orioles have a bunch of young guys, too, fun to watch. Looking at marks pick for the World Series. Curious what you think . Mark derosa likes the phillies beating the yankees in a rematch of the 2009 World Series. What are you looking at . The sentence was beating the yankees. Thats okay with me. I am going to say i think the phillies are there. I like the phillies in a World Series pick. The american league is hard. Its hard to bet against the astros. But i am going orioles. A phillies orioles World Series. I say phillies royals. The royals win it all . I got to say that, right . Yes. The sbp a question for for the royals. They have good pitchers in the starting lineup, but the bullpen is Question Mark for the royals this year. We will see how they do against baltimore. If they are strong against baltimore, dont sleep on them them. Willie . The yankees. If they can pitch and do something at the back end of the bullpen, by the way, some politicians and former politicians you ask about their team and they give platitudes. Claire goes deep on the bullpen for the Kansas City royals. Mark, i think we have you back up. We have the Zoom Link connected. Who do you like in the playoffs . Yeah, first off, willie, apologize. I am sticking with the yanks and foothills. I think the yanks have a nice way, easy road like you said. If they pitch, i think baltimore is left a to be desired at the deadline. They could have made their team stronger. I dont think they necessarily did that. The yankees if they clean up the bullpen a little bit, see if Luis Gil gives them a little help. I think the yankees can get there. I think its the phillies time. I think they have knocked on that door the last couple of years. Are veteran laden, superstar laden, deep pitching staff, good bullpen, timely hitting. They also have a nice line it to get to another World Series. Mark, lets talk about sleepers. People talking about the padres. The tigers played as well as anybody in the second half of the season. If its not the phillies ort yankees, who is kind of a sleeper pick people should be watching . I think for me, dont sleep on the cleveland guardians. I know eventually they have to go through whether it be the astros or the yankees. Number is a team from pilar to post has been number one in the a. L. Central. They have the best bullpen in the entire sport. They have two or three guys that have north of 100 rbis. Jose ramirez is one of the most underrated players in the game. [ inaudible ]. All right. We are losing mark. We have a bad Zoom Connection. We love Mark Derosa. We went to rival High Schools in northern new jersey. He was the best quarterback in new jersey. I played for my team. I call it a rivalry, but it wasnt much of a rivalry. Mark derosa, you can watch Mlb Networks pre and postgame coverage throughout the postseason. We will get him back soon. Soon, the first Vice President ial debate is tonight. Jim clyburn of South Carolina joins the conversation to weigh in on what he expects from each candidate and whether it will make a difference. And the massive strike now across the united states. A live report from new jersey. Also ahead, an update on the Recovery Efforts across the southeast and President Bidens fiery response to Donald Trumps lies. Morning joes coming right back. Back no. No. Nuhuh. Yeah. Oh. Yes. Oh yeah. Yes. Isnt this great . Yeeaahhhh yeah, i could do a cartwheel in here. Oh hey would you like to join us . No. We would love to join you. Lets say youre deep in a show no. W or a game or the game. U. On a train, at home, at work. Okay, maybe not at work. Point is at xfinity. Were constantly engineering new ways to get the entertainment you love to you faster and easier than ever. Thats what i do. Is that Love Island . Welcome back to Morning Joe on this tuesday, october 1st. A lot to cover this morning, including that major strike involving thousands of Dock Workers. What the Work Stoppage means for the global economy. And a preview of the debate between governor tim Walz And SenatorJd Vance. Now with just 35 days until the november election. Lets begin this hour with new developments out of The Middle East where the israeli military has started now a Ground OffensiveIn Lebanon. Officials announced troops crossed the border for a targeted operation they are calling it, posting this video on Social Media. The idf notified the u. S. About the plan and says the goal is to push Hezbollah Farther away from the border. This comes days after israel killed Hassan Nasrallah. Lets go to international correspondent Matt Bradley live from beirut. Matt, whats the latest there . Reporter yeah, well, a quick answer is we dont really know. This is a very unusual moment because the israelis said as you mentioned in your introduction that they have launched a Ground Incursion into Southern Lebanon. Hezbollah, we just got this in the last couple of minutes, denied that. They said this is a zionist lie and actually there has been no confrontation between Hezbollah And Israeli troops. Actually, its consistent with what the israelis are saying. They said they had no exchange of fire between hezbollah forces and israeli Ground Forces in Southern Lebanon. Its kind of a if a tree falls in the forest situation. The israelis said they crossed over, havent engaged with hezbollah. They said they crossed over for the past several weeks. This has been a regular occurrence. So it is very unclear what about Last Night and what about this israeli incursion is different from what we have seen over the past several weeks, even though we didnt know that the israelis were Crossing Over with some regularity. Now they are making this public. They said yesterday they had been doing this regularly. Its unclear what they were doing Last Night and whether this is a really appreciative difference from what we have seen the past several days and weeks. Israel is continuing to do what its been doing the past several weeks, which is punishing hezbollah with airstrikes. Thats still by far the most effective israeli response we have seen so far over the past several weeks since they widened their attacks against hezbollah. We dont know how israeli Ground Forces moved into lebanon, if they are still there. And we heard from this is quoting reuters. They said, quoting an israeli Security Official, they told reuters they are within Walking Distance of the lebanese Border And Havent exceeded that distance so far. So again a very unusual moment where hezbollah is saying this is an all a lie or the israelis have said that they have been moving into Southern Lebanon but there is nothing to make it sound as though its any different from what we heard the past several days and weeks. We are at a critical impasse. Is this a real Paradigm Shift in the conflict we have seen over the past year . Is this an increase in the offensive we have seen the past two weeks mostly almost entirely focused on air to ground attacks by the israelis that decapitated hezbollah in several unusual episodes, exploded pagers and walkietalkies that maimed and killed several hezbollah commandos . The next hours and days will tell. Matt bradley live from beirut In Lebanon. Thank you. Richard haass, this does come at The End of a couple of extraordinary weeks of israel on the offense against hezbollah. The pagers, walkietalkies, the killing of Hassan Nasrallah and now apparently a Ground Incursion. What does that signal to you . The israelis want to move 60, 70,000 citizens back to their homes. There are two ways. Push Hezbollah Far back, 20, 30 miles back beyond the range of a lot of their systems, or you persuade hezbollah that wherever they are to Attack Israel is a dangerous undertaking. The latter makes more sense because israel doesnt want to occupy lebanon again. Been there, done that. If you leave, they could bring forces back. The question is whether you change the calculus of hezbollah directly or their masters or partners in tehran. I think thats what the israelis are trying to do to deter them from using the systems theyve because you cant eliminate older systems, cant prevent the 100 resupply. I think what this is about is changing the calculus of hezbollah and possibly setting up some type of a new informal modis. Lets not forget hezbollah has been attacking civilians since October 8th after the attacks of October 7th. Whats your sense, as a practical question, to the psyche of hezbollah if israel has decapitated the leadership, shown they can strike them in their hip pockets, what does that mean . What you suggest. Put them back on their heels. The idea that Hezbollah And Israel reached an understanding unpeaceful coexistence if you will, i think thats shattered. The israelis said we are not playing that game. So they have really, really hurt hezbollah. Eliminate it . No. Thats not possible. Its a big message to tehran the idea that your proxies, you can operate through them, again ceilings on what israel is willing to do, shattered that assumption. Also i think its actually restrained iran. I think it sent a message to them you are not safe. Your Leadership Isnt necessarily safe and all that. So i think what the israelis are trying to do is change the rules of the road in The Middle East. It doesnt eliminate athletics from houthis, hezbollah, iran. It changes the calculus and gives them a little bit more space and they may have succeeded at that for a while. Over the last couple of days, u. S. Officials telling me certainly no tears shed for Hassan Nasrallah. There are concerns about a wider war. Questions about What Tehran May or may not do in response. But we heard from President Biden yesterday. As u. S. Officials sort of grateful hezbollah has been weakened, he was clear, we need a ceasefire now. He doesnt want this to spiral any further. Hours later, israel went into lebanon it appears. This is another moment where prime Minister Netanyahu and the israeli government took the u. S. Advice and ignored it. Speak to us a little bit about the limits of american power and what could come next in the conflict. Ever since October 7th, i have been hearing from people in The Middle East that Time And Again they have been struck by the fact that the united states is not omnipotent in the way it used to be in the region, it can push for certain things but those things dont necessarily materialize. It pushed for a ceasefire around gaza. It hasnt happened. It can push Israel And Benjamin netanyahu not to go into lebanon but it looks like overnight that is exactly what the israelis have done albeit in a limited way. I think the kind of bigger picture is that how much is enough for israel . How much is israel feeling it needs to do In Lebanon . We know there are tunnels, facilities on the southern lebanese border with israel. Israel has spent a year trying to eliminate tunnel networks in gaza. It hasnt succeeded. What does it need to do in Southern Lebanon for the people to feel safe to live on that border . As this fighting continues, to may have won israel a little bit more Man Ufrg Room kind of in The Middle East generally at the moment. Its not the political solution which i think the administration here would say is what is needed for not just the israelis, but the lebanese and palestinians to feel safe. And the definition of limited, which israel says they will do. They used that word in gaza as well and proceeded to change that definition as they went forward. Richard, if you are sitting in iran, the leadership, watching this play out right now, watching what israel has done in gaza, what its now doing In Lebanon, what are you thinking strategically . There has been a concern there would be direct war between israel and iran, that the united states would be drawn into it. Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said addressing the iranian people yesterday, when iran is free and that moment will come a lot sooner than people think, suggesting you tell me, but if you are iran, what are you thinking right now . Iran has to be careful. Remember, willie, last April Israel demonstrated its ability to penetrate iranian airspace and do what it wanted to do. The iranians have to not give israel a pretext to attack. They gogo after their energy infrastructure, aspects of the nuclear pramt, things to weaken the regime. Which is what the Prime Minister what mr. Netanyahus getting at. The iranian leadership has to be careful not to take things beyond a certain point. This poses a real dilemma to the people in iran. They dont like leaving their buddies in hezbollah to rest in the lurch. Iran is supposed to back all their proxies. If they are involved directly, i think many in israel are ready to bring the war to iran and iranians know they cant win. They can do Terrorism And Sabotage all over the world. The World Wont be necessarily a traditional battlefield war. My guess is they are calculating carefully, particularly the new president of iran. Not clear how much authority he has here. They are calculating because escalation i would say does not serve iranian interests right now. Their dell emma, how do they back their proxies without getting pulled into a war directly that they cant prevail over against israel. Everybody is calculating. Katty makes a good point. What is the israeli definition of success here . They can hurt hezbollah. Maybe push them back temporarily. What are they trying to accomplish . I think they are trying to change the thinking in Tehran And Hezbollah so people suddenly act with greater restraint towards israel. I think thats what this is about. Part of it is psychological. Richard haass, thanks, as always. This morning Tens Of Thousands of Dock Workers on strike at major ports from maine to texas. It comes after the industrys largest union failed to reach an agreement with the United States Maritime Alliance. The group that represents port management. Cnbc is reporting preengss for a strike have been underway in 14 american cities following a Battle Over Wage Increases and the use of automation. Now billions of dollars in trade is stranded as the international Longshoremans Association launches the first strike since 1977. The anchor of worldwide exchange frank holland. What more do we know . The two sides the Longshoremans Union and Port Operators traded counteroffers over pay yesterday. Also the White House has taken steps to facilitate. Not mediate, tate these talks. Not using the Hartley Act to keep the ports open. On Social Media there is a video from the Ila President making what i call a fiery speech to members about these contentious negotiations with Port Operators. He said, we will keep it going every day. We will be in and out. We will be on the news. He tells the member there is some profanity in there, saying they will win this thing. He says trust, the port Operators Cant last long. The Port Operators out with a Statement Yesterday Spelling out the details of the negotiations. They say they offered nearly a 50 Pay Increase in addition to tripling employer contributions to Retirement Plans, strengthening Health Care and offer to retain the current language around automation and semi automation. A key issue when it comes to the negotiations. Frank holland, thank you so much. You will be keeping tabs on this. So, jonathan, this is the White House, obviously, is invested in and monitoring it closely. Dont want this to go on too long. As i said, the ports have been prepared for this. Especially with busy holiday shopping season. It adds another layer to the president ial race, yet another issue. Yes. The White House not directly involved. They are facilitating. Not intervening. Pre President Biden deemed himself the most pro Labor President in history. They are watching this carefully. I was told yesterday most analysts in the White House and outside economists believe if it last as few days, no impact. A week or more, there will be a Ripple Effect that could impact the national economy at a moment when inflation has started to cool, we had Federal Reserve rate cut, people are feeling good about the economy now and could create a wave of bad headlines not just for the current administration but for Vice PresidentKamala Harris. Steve rattner is charting the Money Race ahead of the president ial election. How much the campaigns are bringing in straight ahead on Morning Joe. Oe. The Death Toll from helene continues to rise across six states after that devastating storm ripped through the southeast. This morning at least 125 people are dead in florida, georgia, South Carolina, tennessee, and virginia. A third of the deaths reported in North Carolina where at least 40 people died as a result of Catastrophic Flooding leaving entire communities, some swept away, others under several feet of water. Hundreds more people still missing. Millions of customers in the dark. Families wait to hear back from missing Loved Ones. Tomorrow President Biden will take part in anaryial tour of asheville, North Carolina, to survey the Mindbending Damage that you see in these pictures. Joining us from irwin, tennessee, Priscilla Thompson. Whats the latest on the Recovery Efforts there, but also across the border in North Carolina . Reporter yeah, willie, as we enter day four of recovery here, there are 100 responders out searching through rubble trying to find any signs of life that they can as they say the mission here is shifting from rescue to recovery, and the mission is intensifying to find those who are missing. The floodwaters in tennessee have receded. But the pain is still flowing for some families. They are desperate to find out where she is, where she has been found. They just want news. Reporter Rosa And Monica are among the 150 people still unaccounted for in tennessee. Authorities say more than 100 responders are scouring debris as efforts shifted from rescues to recovery. They confirm only three stormrelated deaths in the state so far. Used everything they had to save life that day. Some were saved. We are still searching for some. We all have hopes we will find some more alive. Reporter relatives say Rosa And Monica were working at impact Plastics Factory when the water began to rise and they got into the back of a semitruck trying to escape. A man who says he was also on the truck posted this Video Online showing Water Rushing by as cars and yellow pipes floated away. Their Family Members were in the back of an 18wheeler Holding On To Pipes calling 911 for help. And that help didnt come. Reporter in a statement, impact plastic says when the Parking Lot began to flood, employees were dismissed but some remained. Boarding a neighboring Companys Truck. That truck tipped over, they say. Five people were rescued by helicopter, but six others were never found. We are devastated by the tragic loss of great employees, the company wrote. Loss made all the more painful by the way for answers. They are really grieving. They really want closure. They just want closure for their families. Reporter and some of those families may now have answers as we are learning that the Death Toll here has ticked up to six, and at this point there are 100 people missing according to the state and we are seeing similar stories across this area, including in North Carolina where there are many, many people still missing and folks are working on the connectivity issues to try to get in touch with people. They are also trying to get the critical supplies like Water And Gas and all of those things as this Recovery Effort continues. Willie. Fema is there putting up starlink so people can connect to tell their Loved Ones they are okay or find help. The devastation, the scope of it from where you are in tennessee to North Carolina, South Carolina, georgia and florida, of coarse, is just staggering. Nbc News CorrespondentPriscilla Thompson in tennessee this morning. Thank you so much. I mentioned President Biden headed to North Carolina. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump visited Georgia Yesterday where he falsely claimed several Times the White House is ignoring the storm. It is not, of course. And ignoring requests from the states republican governor Brian Kemp. The governor is doing a very good job. He is having a hard time getting the president on the phone. I guess they are not being responsive. The federal government is not being responsive. They are having a very hard time getting the president on the phone. He wont get on it. Of course, the Vice President , she is out Someplace Campaigning looking for money. Governor needs to he has been trying to get them. I am sure they will come through. But he has been calling the president. Hasnt been able to get him. Thats another lie. Earlier, Governor Kemp told reporters he spoke with President Biden, that the president offered his assistance. The president just called me yesterday afternoon. I missed him and called him right back. He said, hey, what do you need . I told him we got what we need. We will work through the federal process. He offered if there is other things to need, call him directly, which i appreciate that. President biden of course spoke to the governor of georgia as the governor just underlined there. Later in the day, President Biden was asked about trumps claims and got fiery as he took questions from reporters in the oval office. He is lying. He is lying. And the governor told him he was lying. The governor told him he was lying. I spoke to the governor. I spent time with him. He told me he is lying. I dont know why he does this. The reason i get so angry, i dont care what says about me. I care what he communicates to the people in need. Implies that we are not doing everything possible. We are. You know, jonathan, this is disgusting when the people there need help, suggesting that the White House and fema, because democrats dont want Donald Trump to win, of course, it comes back to him turning their back on him. He also suggested that the White House and this federal government is ignoring maga supporters in red counties. Thats, of course, not true. Just not even in this moment of Destruction And Devastation and people needing Clarity And Help so badly cant put his ego and cheap insults aside in this moment. Refuses to do it against the country is one of the themes from Donald Trump. This is a particularly dangerous lie. If he is saying, hey, the federal government is ignoring those impacted by the storm, that may discourage them from seeking help and State And Federal Officials rg saying we are here, Reach Out to us, we are trying to assist you in this time of need. Donald trump only thinking about himself. He was in Georgia Yesterday potentially a strain on resources there, but wanted to go have the political photo op. Vice president Kamala Harris will go in the days ahead. She wants to make sure she is not an unnecessary Des Distraction from Recovery Efforts. Charlie sykes said its not just like trump is shading the truth or exaggerating. He is just flat outlying. These are complete fabrications, utter falsehoods, and this one in particular strikes me as really dangerous. Yeah. I mean, its not unusual for storms to bring out political tensions, you know, Charlie Crist or chis christie, they have been in positions they had a president from the opposite party and they suffered retribution from their party for embracing that president when they came to get help. This the opposite. Donald trump running for the presidency saying things that are not true. Its odd because its not true. Brian kemp said he spoke to the president. The president said he spoke to Brian Kemp. Brian kemp, the republicans have said, yes, the federal aid is on its way, fema is doing what it can. And you wonder why Donald Trump is in this position where he is saying things that are so clearly provable not to be true in a way that doesnt necessarily help his campaign. If this is just about again and again and again angering his base enough that he makes sure they turn out and vote. Is he worried there may be dropoff in voting and this is the way he gets people to the polls . Its hard to see what the strategy is. As you say, this is dangerous peoples lives are at stake in georgia, North Carolina at the moment and they need all the help they can get and they need to know that the help is going. Thats important. Absolutely toxic. By the way, he knows he can get away with it because he exists in a Media Ecosystem where it will be echoed uncritically. President biden, of course, talked to republican governor Brian Kemp of georgia and the governors across the region about the destruction from the storm to get people the help they need, whether they are democrat or republican. A judge in Fulton County, georgia, struck down the states strict sixweek Abortion Ban yesterday. That ruling now allows the procedure to resume and makes it legal in georgia up to 22 weeks of pregnancy. The ban originally signed into law by a republican governor Brian Kemp back in 2019. The judge explained in his ruling that liberty in georgia includes the power for a woman to control her own body. But he added, the power is not unlimited, stating, quote, when a fetus growing inside a woman reaches viability, when society assumes Care And Responsibility for that separate life, then and only then may society intervene. Joining us now former lit Kbater And Msnbc legal correspondent lisa rubin. A lot of people had been watching this case very, very closely to see where it would land. What was the decision ultimately by the judge here . The decision ultimately by the judge is the prohibition on abortion beyond that six Week Mark when a fetal heartbeat can be detected is no longer good law. He says thats rooted in Georgias Constitution, there is a recognition of a light to liberty. That liberty, a liberty of privacy, and georgias own law recognizes that that liberty of privacy is broader than the federal constitutional Right And Ton that basis he said, as you just noted, that although the state has a compelling interest in promoting fetal life, where you are balancing that against a am Womans Liberty of privacy to control her own body, the States Interest is not so compelling as to overcome the womans right to control her body until the fetus is viable outside that body. This is that debate we have heard a lot since dobbs, the heartbeat, six weeks versus viability at, say, 2 weeks, whatever you set that standard. As of now, Women In Georgia Up To 22 weeks because of the Ruling Yesterday can get an abortion. But i assume that will be appealed again, perhaps all the way to the Supreme Court . Yeah, some people i think will be afraid to perform abortion in the intervening time. This isnt just a ban on abortion. This is a criminal prohibition on abortion. As judge mcburney, the Fulton County superior Court Judge who issued this decision notes, the woman could be prosecuted because of the way that the statute is worded. Thats a particularly pernicious place to be, and he recognizes that all throughout his decision. This is i want to be clear with you and the viewers. This is almost a radical decision in its recognition of the right of women to control their body. More importantly, to prevent against a sort of Involuntary Servitude or forced laborle. There is a recognition that women are not as he said collectively owned community property, they cant be pores forced to carry a fetus before viability any more than you or i could be forced to give up a kidney. Thats a fairly radical conception of the right to abortion, and made a lot of welcome i know think, my god, this is The End of judicial gaslighting. There is sunday here who sees us. Its extraordinary. So do we think this ruling can serve as template for other states that have restrictive abortions put in place . It depends what that States Law is constitutionally, right, because each state is interpreting its own constitution. Some of the other states that recognized a fundamental right to abortion in their State Ace Constitution dont do so from a liberty perspective. They do so, for example, on equal protection grounds. Here the judge is saying georgia has a long history of recognizing a broad right to privacy. Thats why he roots it there. On the other hand, i think there are pieces of this opinion that could be very helpful for other judges to latch on to, in particular he really disavows textualism and originalism, the constitutional entertive methods ever the day. The problem with looking for the original meaning of constitutional text is that is nextarily excludes half the population. Women with limited rights in the 18 sorry, 1860s, for example, when some of these provisions were put into place, and block women who had no rights at all. Thats in this opinion. So Women In Georgia have a reprieve for the woman and women in other states were there to be similar lawsuits my have similar reprieves until the reprieves themselves are challenged by higher courts. Presumably the only way that this gets completely resolved and that there is a standard that is allows women to have access to abortion up to 22 weeks or viability would be for some decision to be made by congress or a reversal at the Supreme Court . Thats true, although, theoretically, the final word should be georgias Supreme Court interpreting its own constitution. Whats important, if folks like former President Trump are saying abortion is left up to states, this is a state Court Judge interpreting his own constitution. Yes, it will likely be appealed all the way up to georgias Supreme Court, but the text here that matters is Georgias Constitution not the federal constitution, and while congress could make abortion legal all across the nation for georgias women right now, what really matters is their constitution. Judge Mcburney Writing, i a mere six weeks is a point which many if not most women are unaware or unsure if they are pregnant. He believes thats too soon, putting it at 22 weeks. With the election now just five weeks away, its getting close, a look at the Money Race. Lets bring in former Treasury OfficialSteve Rattner. Steve, good morning. So One Campaign it looks like from the behind you is far ahead at this moment in fundraising. Ive been through a lot of political cycles, raised a lot of money, including for Vice President harris. Ive never seen anything quite like this. Lets start with the Money Race through The End of august. The blue, of course, the democrats, the red, the republicans. We have a bunch of pieces here. This is socalled Hard Money the candidates raised. This is Money Raced by the dnc and rnc. You can see substantial 42 of the donors to the Biden Harris Campaign were small donors. Thats a reversal than the past when Donald Trump had more small donors. Important to note is cash on and. You can see again the democrats have a lead here in terms of cash on hand. One question you might ask is how does this compare to other cycles . You can see the Biden Harris Campaign is on track to pass the last campaign. Heres whats exceptional. Trump is way short of where he was last time. Only raised about half as much money at this point as he had in 2020 and a bit more than he had back in 2016. Obviously as we move to your second chart, everything changed when President Biden stepped aside and made way for Vice President harris just sending donations through the roof. This is extraordinary. Through the spring Biden And Trump were piddling along, to use a phrase. The president dropped out on july 21th. The month of july 204 Million raised by the harris campaign. In august 190 Million versus 45, 48 Million down here. An extraordinary outpouring of money raising. Heres the other thing thats exceptional. During his six months or so running, President Biden had 2 Million unique donors, and thats a very reasonable number. Vice President Harris passed that number in nine days. She passed the Number Biden had raised throughout his campaign and is now up to about 4 million. If this has any relevance to popular support, this is an extraordinary outpouring of support. Kamala harris has changed this race in many ways but especially in the fundraising. The Senate And House super pac fundraising, how does that look . In the senate, Democrats Outraising Republicans and have more cash on hand, again, a good position them to be in. In the house, a similar pattern, more money raised, more cash on hand. So democrats pretty well positioned to go into this. Lastly, what we call Hard Money, party committee number, the third bucket of money, which is a huge bucket of money, are the famous Super Pacs we talk about. Here the democrats, maybe not surprisingly, are not doing quite as well. So far we only have expenditure numbers. We dont have money raised numbers. Republicans have spent over A Billion dollars, some of it advocating for republicans, some advocating against democrats. Democrats have spent 485 million. When you add all this up it comes to billions of dollars. I heard Katty Kay say a u. K. Election Costs Something like 50 Million pounds. It is an obscene amount of money. Before i let you go, just a general question about the state of the economy, because theres been so much from Donald Trump and others thrown in about the country going to hell and all that. When you look at gdp, employee unemployment, markets soaring, the fed lowering rates, what is your snapshot of how the economy is doing. The Federal Reserve has engineered a soft landing, gotten inflation down almost exactly to its 2 target without triggering a recession. We continue to add jobs. The gdp continues to expand. There is pressure at the lower end, no question about that, from inflation and having spent the covid payments that they got. But all in all, this is an economy that continues to mark along at a reasonable growth rate. That is also good news for the Vice President , which as you point out the election just about a month away. Joining us now democratic congressman from South Carolina james clyburn. Thanks for being with us. We want to talk about your Home State. We had Jamie Harrison here talking about whats going on across the southeast. What are you seeing and hearing from your state . Thank you very much for having me. Were hearing unusual reports about this storm. Were used to having storms in South Carolina in the low country most especially, but this one is in upstate, greenville, spartanburg, and we had some loss of life, not near what is going on just north of greenville in asheville, North Carolina, a place ive visited many, many Times. Never would believe that mountainous area would encounter something like this. This is testament to the fact that something is happening with climate change and at Times for us to get in touch with that, so much of that we know from science is being caused by human behavior. And to have people running for office and denying the science that exists in all of this, this is testament to the fact that we should get serious about climate change and do the things that are necessary to make the adjustments going forward. The disaster were looking at right here is just catastrophic. As you mentioned, in asheville, North Carolina, particularly, one of the countrys great small cities. Let me ask you, because theres been some back and forth on this, congressman, do you feel like youre talking to the right people in the federal government . Are you getting the help you need . Are you hearing from this administration . Absolutely. On the morning of this just after we got the reports, i was in touch with the Vice President s office and the president s office. Both of them have responded to all of the requests that have been made of them. You just heard Reports Today from Governor Kemp. Governor kemp is a republican governor, yet he is an honest man. Im not sure i agree with everything he did as secretary of state, but quite frankly he has proven to be a very honest, forthcoming governor of georgia, and i admire him standing up to this candidate that seems to be off the rocker. Congressman, going from the president lying about the former president , trump, lying about the contacts with the president ial office on Disaster Relief and Governor Kemp, to the Debate Tonight and the fact that Jd Vance has taken up the same habit of lying to the american people and thinking that its okay. What are you looking for tonight in this debate . And what do you think Tim Walz must do in order to continue the momentum that Kamala Harris is enjoying right now in the president ial race . Well, i think that he must do exactly what the Vice President saw in him, and that is maintain his authenticity. Ive been campaigning and working with him since he first ran for congress. I went out to minnesota, spent two days with him, his lovely wife, went to the school that he taught in, went to the Mayo Clinic for Health Care, town halls with him. Theres something about Tim Walz that is just genuine. Hes an authentic person. I theys what he needs to do tonight, maintain that authenticity. Dont get carried away by what you know is going to come from the other side, that is misrepresentations, obfuscations. Well never be a perfect country, but we should bauls in pursuit of perfection. Thats what the preamble to our constitution is all about. I expect tim Walz Tonight to maintain that authenticity that has made him such a great Candidate And Governor of minnesota. Congressman, this Debate Tonight may be the last major Set Piece of this campaign. Were entering into the stretch right here. I want to get your thoughts on the race and in particular some polls that suggest obviously a very tight race, but that Donald Trump has made some inroads with voters of color, particularly young black men. What do you attribute that to, and what can Vice President harris do to reverse that . Well, you know, thats been sort of a mystery to me, because ive been seeing these reports. I do visit my barbershop. My mother was a beautician. My niece, her granddaughter, runs that shop today. Its a pretty big facility. I visit that shop as well. I dont see all that i hear. Im wondering whether or not some of that is just people voicing frustrations with the system or whether or not thats some convictions they have. I cant imagine any real conviction on the part of africanamericans for Donald Trump. Now, i do know my parents were republicans, and i do know there are a lot of africanamericans who maintain loyalty to the party of lincoln, because lincoln was the one who did, in fact, free the slaves. Now, i know that it took the 13th amendment that came later, but all of that is academic. And people remain loyal to lincoln. But someTimes i have to remind crowds when i go to them, yes, lincoln was the great emancipator, but the great betrayer was rutherford b. Hayes, who was also a republican and ushered in jim crow that did away with all of those freedoms that Abraham Lincoln gave us. So i tell them both of them were republicans. So if youre going to give lincoln all the credit, lets give rutherford b. Hayes the credit he deserves for being the great betrayer that he was. Thats what we see taking place today. Ive been telling people this election is so much like the 1876 election, that we ought to look at that when we get ready to start early voting in a couple of days. Its already starting in some places. Usually we wait for our next guest John Meacham to make a rutherford b. Hayes reference, but well take it from you, sir. Thank you so much. We appreciate it. The strike expects to have a significant impact on the u. S. Economy and Supply Chains as it moves forward with goods struck at ports until a deal can be reached. Lets bring in Business Correspondent Christine romans live at the port in bayonne, new jersey. Reporter these two parties have been at an impasse for months really. There was some communication Last Night, you know, an offer made by the shippers to the Dock Workers, the White House really pushing them to try and come to a deal. But so far it hasnt been enough to avert a strike. This morning, docks from boston to miami to houston shut down. This is going down in history, what were doing here. Reporter after Tens Of Thousands of workers went on strike at midnight, affecting the docks that take in half of u. S. Imports. We plan on being here 24 7 until we finalize or get a good contract from the shippers. Reporter those ports handle products americans use throughout their daily lives, from groceries to electronics, cars and hospital supplies. Were deeply concerned about the impact that a strike could have on our Supply Chains, especially when it comes to critical goods like medical supplies and others. Reporter this comes after a Sixyear Contract expired. The group representing ports and shippers saying the Workers Union has repeatedly refused to come to the table. The union is seeking to restrict how much of these reports can be ran by automated cranes, gates and trucks. Nothings going to move without us were going to keep this thing going every day in and out. Reporter a shutdown could cost the u. S. Economy up to 4. 5 billion per day. Retailers like walmart and Home Depot could be caught in the middle, samsung also a major importer. President Biden Isnt currently planning to block the strike. The president and the Vice President really pushing both sides to get back to the Bargaining Table and get to a deal quickly. Every single day that ports are shut down, it can take up to five days to untangle the other side. Last night the maritime alliance, the Shippers Consortium offered a 50 Pay Raise to the workers. The Dock Workers say that wasnt enough and they have more issues they want to work through. Christine, thank you so much. Lets bring in the coanchor of Cnbcs Squawk Box andrew ross sorkin. As christine suggested, the economy can sort of endure this for days, but probably not weeks. How might this impact consumers . Look, i think if it goes on for weeks, we are going to have a real problem. For every day there is a strike, its going to take a week for the Supply Chain, if you will, for everything to get back in service. So it becomes a problem, you know, literally as these Days Roll on. Whats interesting to me is the distinction between the 50 that was offered and the 70 plus that theyre asking for and how that delta could get bridged. I also think, you know, as christine was mentioning, part of this is about automation and this idea that they effectively are saying youre going to have to employ us whether you use cranes or not. I dont know if you saw this statement from the teamsters Last Night that says the u. S. Government should stay the f out of this Fight And Aid how union workers to withhold their labor for the wages and benefits they have earned. Its going to be interesting as we get close to the election how this administration and how Vice President harris deals with this and labor, if you will, and what we see from former President Trump and how those things come together and how that therefore plays out on the public stage. President biden, of course, views himself as a big union guy. His instinct is probably to get involved here. Whats your sense of how big a deal this could become if its not already yet . Its messy and it could become a big problem in the election. Having said that, though, trump is kind of boxed here. Because if trump tries to take the side of big business and the shippers, hes got a whole bunch of rankandfile guys in unions that are going to remain loyal to him. But if he comes out against the workers, its going to cause him real trouble. The reason that teamsters are speaking up is because the teamster leader is in big trouble, because he didnt endorse harris and hes got all these locals abandoning the national, which is unprecedented. In my time in politics ive never seen locals abandon a national like they have in teamsters. So this is messy and complicated. I will say this. The Automation Issue is ghoingt going away. Its difficult for businesses to say were not going to use what is going to make us more efficient. Were going to hire people when we dont need them. I dont know how you stop the clock on automation in the workplace. I dont know how you can do that in an open free Market System like we have. This isnt the first time weve heard about automation. It certainly wont be the last time in terms of labor negotiations. Willie. Go ahead. Real quick, from just a political dimension perspective and i heard from a number of trump supporters Last Night and this morning saying from their perspective its get out your popcorn, meaning, i dont think youre going to see former President Trump get involved or try to support either side. The truth is he would like, i would imagine, this to go on as long as humanly possible, because any kind of economic pain that gets inflicted is therefore an argument he can use against this administration and therefore Vice President harris. The federal Reserve ChairmanJerome Powell said the Federal Reserve may cut interest rates again this year. Of course, the fed just cut rates. This is expected, is it not, andrew . Pretty expected. He said we should see two quarterpoint cuts. Having said that, there was a bit of nuance to it where he effectively suggested if things were worse than anticipated, he may cut more. But there were other parts of that speech where he said, look, maybe we got it wrong, maybe we wont be cutting two quarter points if things are even better. I think this is steady as she goes. I dont think this surprised anybody. I do think there was a lot of tea leaf reading. I dont think there was much to it. Israel has ordered the evacuation of 30 border villages in Southern Lebanon as it pushes forward with socalled targeted Ground Raids in the area. Lets bring in Richard Engel. What does it look like there . Reporter well, already you can see the streets are starting to empty out. Israel has ordered these mass evacuations, more than 30 villages specifically, and told lebanese people not to come below the letani river. A lot of streets are starting to look like this. There are very few people out. People are nervous. There is an ominous feeling now that this war could escalate really at any moment. Israels Ground Incursion into lebanon is under way, a Crossborder Drive to attack hezbollah on its own terrain. U. S. Officials saying israel informed the biden administration ahead of time, describing the operation as short, days, not weeks, and limited in its geographic reach. Our war is is with hezbollah, not with the people of lebanon. Reporter u. S. Officials tell nbc fluz the administration is concerned Israels Operation could expand. This morning the israeli military issued an ominous ruling telling lebanese not to travel in vehicles south of the letani river, suggesting a large part of Southern Lebanon could become an open war zone. Israel says its goal is to create a Buffer Zone to prevent hezbollah from using the area to launch attacks against israel. Weve just crossed into Southern Lebanon. Almost no one is heading south. All the traffic were seeing are vehicles, motorcycles heading north. This morning, hezbollah fired more rockets at israel. Hezbollah claims to have 100,000 fighters. Independent analysts say the actual number may be closer to half of that. Still, a major, dedicated force dug in on its own terrain with years of preparation. But israel has weakened hezbollah significantly, killing the groups leader, decimating its chain of command and boobytrapping its communication. Prime Minister Netanyahu says he sees this war as part of a larger battle against all of irans proxies in The Middle East. Yesterday he addressed the iranian people directly. There is nowhere in the middle East Israel cannot reach. There is nowhere we will not go to protect our people and our country. Reporter Hezbollahs Leader vowed the group will emerge victorious. The pentagon has said its sending thousands of reinforcements and squadrons of fighter jets. There is that ominous feeling here that this war could escalate. So far both Israel And Hezbollah say they havent engaged in any direct combat. It seems the israelis went in. Theyre staying very close to the Israel Lebanon Border for now. People are leaving this area. It seemed israel went in, tried to see if they could pull out hezbollah, draw them into an open fight, but at this stage it doesnt seem hezbollah took the bait, but these are still early days. What would an escalation potentially look like . Is iran actually ready not through proxies but face to face to have a confrontation with israel . Reporter it seems unlikely at this stage that iran would engage. Iran didnt respond after the assassination of a Hamas Leader in iran. Iran has continued to say it will respond at a time and place of its choosing. Even hezbollah doesnt seem like it wants to confront the israeli military when the israeli military is on the move. Its aggressive. It has the u. S. Military behind it. They would rather draw the israelis into a ground war, engage them in a long guerrilla fight. But hezbollah has taken a lot of blows recently. An escalation at this stage potentially involving iran seems unlikely. More likely it seems that it would be a full israeli push into Southern Lebanon, deep into the area where i am right now and then engaging the Tens Of Thousands of hezbollah fighters, who say they are ready to confront them. Richard engel reporting live from Southern Lebanon. Thank you and please stay safe there on the ground. We appreciate it, as always. Claire it has been stunning what israel has been able to do to hezbollah, whether its putting bombs in their pockets effectively with their phones and pagers and walkietalkies or taking out the head of hezbollah directly in a strike and now putting troops on the ground. Where do you see this headed . Good question. I think there wont be any kind of shift until after our elections, and im not sure there will be then. I remember going to israel for the first time as a member of the armed services committee. My visit there was all about their military. I remember thinking these are folks that live in a very dangerous neighborhood, but they are really preparing. The level of training in their military, the level of their Intelligence Capability is really unsurpassed in that area of the world. They are really, really good at this. And you see what theyve done using that intelligence, taking out the leaderleadership, the C And Control before they try and create a buffer. Its very strategic and frankly has given netanyahu a little bit of a lifeline politically, at least for the immediate future. The strength of israeli intelligence so on display in the last week or so, again, makes the failures of October 7th that much more mystifying. Theres at least a possibility that iran may do some sort of facesaving Rocket Strike fairly easily picked out of the air by the Iron Dome supported by u. S. Assets in the area. But they believe theres a real reluctance for israel to escalate further, because if they draw israel into a full war, there would be calamity in the region. President biden saying yesterday along with secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin they support israels right to defend itself but want to continue to pursue diplomatic pursuit of some sort of a ceasefire there. Former president Jimmy Carter turns 100 years old today, making him the first former president ever to live a full century. Happy birthday, mr. President. The White House honoring him today with this display on the north lawn. A starstudded Benefit Concert was held in atlanta a couple weeks ago raising more than A Million dollars for the carter centers international program. This week thousands of habitat for humanity volunteers are in st. Paul, minnesota, to build 30 homes. Among them, Country Music legends Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood. In a moment well speak with them. First lets bring in jon meacham. Jimmy carter turns 100 years old today. I think the way people look at Jimmy Carter, his presidency and certainly his legacy have changed so much in the 40something years since his presidency. Theres a difference between headlines and history. President carter is the embodiment of someone who in the shortterm had a lot of political difficulties, which is kind of difficulties. But he was someone who saw far into the future, warned us about a lot of the issues about climate, was a really an interesting bridge figure, if you think about it, for the democratic party. First democrat in eight years, president johnson had won 12 years in 1964. Then the party had lost in 68, lost in 72, and it was President Carter who came out of the south, was the first selfdescribed evangelical, bornagain christian, started on the democratic side and really embodied a kind of thoughtfulness as president that, again, the country decided to move in a different direction four years later. But thats what the country does. And i think his life since has been a renaissance one, and there is a lot for us to learn from how he has conducted himself both in office and afterward. And, john, certainly that was always the line about carter, perhaps he was the most successful post had the most successful post presidency. And that sort of rankled him. He was proud of the job he did in office too. Tell us a little bit about that. Four years in office, his history underrated him. Yeah. Exactly right. Whenever someone said that, you could see a sort of thousand Yard Stare in those eyes. It is, like, you know, i was just fine as president , whoever was saying that to him. You know jonathan alter has written a really excellent book about President Carter. A lot of Times our view of a president changes over time. President grant has been reevaluated. President truman has been reevaluated. George Herbert Walker bush has been reevaluated. You have this unfolding conversation, if you will, about what president s mean and what they have accomplished. And one of the things i would recommend to folks, if they have some spare time today, as theyre getting their popcorn ready for the Vp Debate, look at the malay speech, he never uses the word, it is a really interesting speech. It is about the crisis of confidence in american life. And you can argue whether a president should talk about that sort of thing, but President Carter made the decision that he wanted to talk about what he felt was amiss in the country. And just google it up as george w. Bush would say, and take a look. It is a thoughtful exposition of the complexities of democracy in a time of stress. That might actually shed some light, might it not . It might. Lets bring in the coverage, Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, their work goes back to 2007 when they helped to build homes on the Gulf Coast in the years after hurricane katrina. Also with us, the ceo of habitat for humanity international, jonathan wreckler. Were so happy to have you all with us this morning. Garth and trisha, i would ask you, looking back on the last, gosh, what, 17 years or so that youve been involved with habitat, what it has meant to you and what these communities get from the service of habitat. We talk a lot about how we we probably get more out of it than everybody else does. It is an honor to volunteer and from the very first build in new orleans we were hooked. And it was just our honor. Yeah, just to be part of it, i know were hosting, but the truth is the greatest honor you can be is side by side and then what i love is youre working side by side with the volunteers and the true heroes are the homeowners and theyre right there busting their butts every day here, every morning, first thing, just really proud to get to be part of it. Jonathan, you have such a long legacy. People have become familiar, people have worked with you and participated in this great effort behind habitat for humanity. For those who have not, how do you describe it to people and how can they get involved . Well, habitat for humanity is affordable housing mission. We work in 70 countries and over 1,000 communities across the united states. It is we encourage you to go to habitat. Org and learn how to come out and see it. We need peoples muscles, we also need their voices. We got a huge affordable Housing Crisis in this country and around the world and i think today is a special one because it is President Carters 100th birthday and it marks 40 years since they first got involved with habitat, which is how the world got involved with habitat. Were 48 years old. But when president and mrs. Carter got on a Bus And Win from plains, georgia, to New York city, thats when the world found out about habitat. Because of their inspiration and so many others, we helped 59 Million people have new and improved housing around the world. So, garth and trisha, let me ask you, habitat for humanity for so many people is so closely associated with former President Carter. My wife and i have done a project together. Just tell us about what youre doing there, why st. Paul, minnesota, what help are you trying to provide . I think love is everywhere, right . Thats all that matters. Thats what this place does. President carter said it best, there is a light in all of us. And it will shine its brightest when youre doing something for somebody else. So if there is something missing in your life, im going to look at you right now and say, habitat is going to be the answer, jump in here, youll find that feeling, you said you did it with you and your wife, same way i ask you back, did you not feel like you were getting more out of it than you were putting in . There is no question there, it benefited us far more than the people we tried to help, willie. Trisha, i think im looking at you two thinking im sure youre tugged in A Million directions and everyone wants you on board with their projects, what is it about this that drew you in . I think in our careers we have done a lot of things to help other organizations. When we first built in after katrina and swung a hammer that day, we thought this is a way to physically get in and do something that makes us feel as good as everybody else. And, also, you know it a team building thing. You hear the hammers behind us. Thats the sound of love. It is really an amazing experience, the people you meet and the people you get a chance to interact with. We actually after the week we leave really inspired. It is selfish for us. We enjoy it so much. It is a beautiful program. I want to ask you, jonathan, i know youre a native of North Carolina, the pictures we have been reporting on today, and in the last few days coming out of western North Carolina, and really across the southeast, the carolinas and georgia and tennessee, down to florida as well. What are you hearing from your Home State, and what role can habitat play, maybe down the road in bringing people back . Thank you for raising that. One of the sad of the parts of our work is helping communities rebuild after disaster. We need more housing and we already heard our initial assessments, we have over 100 communities where habitat works where were devastated by helene. From florida to North Carolina, georgia, South Carolina and tennessee and so if people want to go to habitat. Org, you can learn about the response, learn how you can help, because sadly the Relief Effort is where most of the resources go, but there are years of rebuilding and we have too much experience unfortunately rebuilding after these big disasters. It is an extraordinary organization. Habitat for humanity. Not familiar with it yet, not participated, it really is everything. Garth, trisha and jonathan, habitat humanitarians, thank you for being here and thank you for all the good work you do. Thank you. Thanks for having us. All right. Well see you guys. John meacham, there is a president ial Debate Tonight. We can debate ourselves how much a president ial debate matter. What will you be looking for tonight . Well, were going to have to see on the screen, again, a very stark choice. Stark choice about is the united states of america going to decide that an era of constitutional consensus embodied by Jimmy Carter is an era are we committed to peaceful transfers of power, you know . Jimmy carter lost a big race to ronald reagan, was not happy about it, but he with great grace, the american democracy unfolded. And it is a very clear choice. And it is i believe, personally, it is beyond policy. It is about the essential ethical view of a candidate, of a ticket, about the viability and importance of american democracy as opposed to a will to power at any cost. And thats what youre going to see. All right, president ial historian John Meacham, and the professor at vanderbilts most popular lecture, John Meacham, youre the greatest, john, thanks so much. Talk to you soon. That does it for us this morning. Ana cabrera picks up the coverage right now. We have breaking news as we get under way this hour. 10 00 a. M. Eastern, 7 00 a. M. Pacific. Im Ana Cabrera reporting from New York. The u. S. Has indications that iran is preparing an imminent ballistic Missile Attack against israel.
