Okay. I have been thinking a lot lately about that moment a few weeks ago and you remember The One. When Kamala Harris walked out on the Debate Stage and shook Donald Trumps hand. She was pretty aggressive and didnt wait for him and she literally leaned in into his face. I have been thinking about that moment because that image is an example of the campaign she has run pretty much since. Instead of ignoring issues where she is perceived to have a disadvantage, which, by the way every candidate does have, she is diving right into them. Take the economy. Time and again voters favor Donald Trump when it comes to the economy by the polls and as much as that bends your mind because he talks about tariffs which would raise costs for everybody and getting taxes for corporations which he loves to talk about that, that is how voters are feeling. Instead of hiding from the topic, she dove into it and she gave an economic Policy Speech in pittsburgh where she outlined plans to make investments in industries and talked about the middle class because of her own upbringing and we always want to hear more about it and she sat down to talk about it. You dont just throw around the idea of tariffs across the board and that is one of the problems with Donald Trump. And i say this frankly in all sincerity. He is not very serious about how he thinks about some of these issues. That is all an example of her lean in strategy. It may be working. Over the past few weeks, she has started to close the gap with folks on the economy and its a huge issue. But it isnt that issuer you see her strategy playing out. There is perhaps no issue that has been more challenging for democrats in terms of moving public opinion and immigration. It is challenging for harris specifically who has been pegged by critics like The Borders are inaccurate and as far as surges of migrants for the past two years which is absurd in this country has had a broken Immigration System for decades and long before harris was picked to be Joe Bidens Running Mate. And not to beat a dead horse but i will. It was trump who killed the bipartisan border deal. It wasnt Kamala Harris. Regardless of all of that, they consistently show immigration as a major weakness for democrats and for harris specifically. But the News Poll this month that shows 54 of registered borders voters think he would do a better job compared to 33 for harris. She wont make up that gap between now and november but making up some of it. Instead of running away from all of that, she literally went to The Border this week and on friday she visited a Border Town in arizona confronting this issue and used it as an opportunity to talk about things like this. As president i wont only bring back the Border Security Bill that Donald Trump tanked, but i will do more to secure our border. It was the strongest Border Security Bill we have seen in decades. It was endorsed by The Border patrol union. And it should be in effect today. But Donald Trump tanked it and picked up the phone and called some friends in congress and said stop the bill because he prefers to run on a problem instead of fixing a problem. That right there i just talk through in you saw from the Vice President is a Textbook Example of flipping the script, of diving first into an Issue Or Headfirst where you have a Disadvantage Or Leaning in as i have talked about. It is safe to say that the willingness to be bold and aggressive and own her vulnerabilities the contrast with her opponent who had this to say or not to say about Mark Robinson this week. When you pull your support of Mark Robinson . I dont know the situation. It is hard to find a clear example of walking away from your problems than what we saw there. Come on. He knows the situation. Of course he does. He doesnt want to talk about it. He is running scared from a second debate consisting it is too late despite having debated around this proposed date in 2016 and 2020 and even the Fox News hosts are calling him out saying this week he thinks harris would agree to the Fox News debate in the holdup is Donald Trump. So he is too chicken to meet harris on a Debate Stage in and said instead goes back to a safe place resorting to attacks in the friendly confines of a campaign rally. Kamala is mentally impaired. Joe biden became mentally impaired and come all a was born that way. She was born that way. If you think about it, only a mentally disabled person could have allowed this to happen to our Country And Anybody would know that. That was gross. What we see right now is a candidate who leans in and not afraid to address and embrace the areas where she has skeptics and that is what leaders do and she has grounds to make up some things and a candidate shines a Lander And Lantern on vulnerabilities and another runs away from it who hides over and over again in his dark Comfort Zone in these nasty and racist attacks. It is great to see you. I want to start with when you know the Vice President very well, and we will show a photograph of you with Harris And Beau biden from 2013 which is a throwback photograph. I think a lot of us. , myself included, are House Surprise she is as being aggressive. The moment leading up to the debate, she leaned into her perceived political disadvantages of being aggressive on the Trail And Hasnt surprised you or have we missed it until now . I have known her for almost 20 years. It doesnt surprise me at all. She is appropriately aggressive and unafraid and will do the kinds of things necessary to promote the interests of the american people and consistent with her professional career. I have known her since she was the da in san francisco, Attorney General, senator, Vice President. In each of those roles she has done nothing more than that which is best for the american people in bold in her approaches. She had success at every level at which she has served the american people and i do expect that if given the opportunity, she will do the same thing as president of the united states. One of the things that has shown up that i imagine is frustrating for being on the campaign is 28 of people who want to know more about the Vice President. It is a huge opportunity. I am not convinced theyre looking for and 85 Page Plan to be left on the doorstep that you have known her so well for this amount of time. What you wish people knew more about her that they dont digest or what they may not know yet given how the last few months of gone . That notion of we need to know more about her plans is befuddling in the sense that she laid out detailed plans on a variety of things, The Border, the economy. We do know about her history as a law enforcement officer. I think we know who and we should know who she is. I have gotten to know her, as i said over the course of the last two decades. She is compassionate, a person unafraid to use her convictions to come up with good policies and not afraid to take on the powers that be. When it came to the Mortgage Fraud Crisis she took on big banks and got billions of dollars of relief for california homeowners who had been defrauded by those banks. She is a person who stood for criminal justice reform. She is a warm person and funny. She is a great cook. She is a downed Earth Person who is a great public servant. She would be a great outstanding president of the united states. I do want to get your take on all of this. I gave my take on how trump is running away from his weaknesses and kind of using the same old tired attacks. You recently tweeted in this stood out to me, of course he wont debate again, three reasons. He got whipped, his campaign fears the more people see kamala the more they like her true in the more people see him the more they will realize he is in cognitive decline. We have been watching him a long time and expand on that. What do you observe and him right now that makes you think that . He has never been a master of the english language, but if you look back four years ago and eight years back, his sentences are shorter, they make less sense. His paragraphs are more garbled. He seems to be more out of touch with the questions asked of him and the way in which he formulates his responses just dont seem to be cogent. He doesnt have many Policy Positions that he would ever talk about. He just seems to me to be a person who seems to be a little bit more confused than perhaps he was four years ago. I am not saying he was spectacular four years ago or four years before that but even against those lowered standards, he doesnt seem to meet the standards, those lower standards he was judged by just a few weeks ago or years ago, he doesnt meet those. Not nearly enough attention to that garble and confusion. I played a clip where he called Kamala Harris quote mentally impaired and that is outrageous and it almost goes on to say it is nasty and part of this Projection But Part of this pattern for him is how i see it, going after women, women of color and in particular, in incredible demeaning terms. What you think it is all about . The Trump Playbook is when you dont have the specifics or you dont have the ammunition to actually go after somebody on their policies or go after them in a substantive way, you go back to eighth and ninth Grade Kind of stuff for you start to call people names and talk about mental Stability Or Inability to do certain things. I think it is both projection on his part but also an indication of, again, the cognitive decline where he doesnt have the ability to mount a substantive challenge to the person he is running against. I think that is something the american people need to take into consideration. Donald trump made a great deal of the cognitive abilities of joe biden. We now have the person on the republican side who is the oldest person ever to run for president of the united states. You have to think, if a this is where he is right now, where will he be three or four years from now and also take into consideration, well, if this guy for whatever reason cognitively doesnt make those four years, the person who would stand in his place would be Jd Vance. That is a truly frightening thing to have to consider. Speaking of, and you have played a number of many roles in your many decades of Public Service but you are in charge of the Vp Vetting Process and i spoke with Governor Walz a few times. He has been on television and people have gotten to know him and it seems like her pick has gone pretty well so far. What you expect to hear or want to hear during that debate on tuesday between Governor Walz and Jd Vance . I suspect that he will do better than Donald Trump did when he got whipped as i said in his debate. Jd vance of the person who, if a little strange, and more than a little weird he is disciplined. I do expect you will see him come out in that way and he will stick to his guns. He will try to deflect about the things he is talked about in terms of immigrants eating dogs and cats. He will try to somehow portray all of that Stuff And Pivot off of that and the things that are untrue but doing so in a disciplined way. I hope the american people will take that into consideration and Tim Walz, by contrast, is as genuine of a person i have come to know. He is a person who presents himself as he is, a person who is warm and caring and tells it like it is. That encapsulation is seen when you use the word weird. Pundits have came out to talk about ways to talk about the ticket. He didnt go through Focus Groups or things like that but he expressed that which he thought they were, which is weird. It was something that caught on. I think that is the example of who he is but be leery of Jd Vance. You will see a disciplined person there will try to run away from that which he has said and do it in a way that is couched in language that if you dont look for it may seem convincing. Remember that who he is or what he is said and the way in which he changed positions over the years. This is a guy who described Donald Trump and unbelievably unflattering ways who is now said that he would be a great president of the united states. He would not be a good Vice President. It is so interesting to hear you say this because i watched some of this past debate with Tim Ryan and the expectation is he will be a performer like trump and actually he is actually a more disciplined debater and interesting to watch. You heard President Trump threatening to prosecute people in its been a consistent message and a tricky balance about not being an alarmist but being very clear eyed about what he intends to do. You have been an advocate for Voting Rights for people who want their voices heard and you have been an Attorney General. How should we take that . Do you think the apparatus out there is prepared for him to lament what he keeps saying on the trail . I think we absolutely have to take a messes word and he will Weapon Eyes the Department Of Justice to go after his political foes. What is frightening about this is a few things. He has project 2025 that lays out how they will do it. Beyond that, they have the experience they had for years when he was president. And they also now know its not only a question of who you will point is Attorney General but who the deputy Attorney General is or head of the criminal division or who serves as the united States Attorney or assistant united States Attorneys. They will use the doj to go after people who are their political foes. This is something that has never really happened in the history of this republic. That is something, by itself, that should disqualify him for being considered as president of the united states. No doubt it should, among many things that should disqualify him. You know well and you have been educating all of us, it is really about six or seven states that will really matter in the selection and may be plus or minus a few. There has been new reporting and i have been paying attention because this matters but this is a News Story about republicans filing a flurry of lawsuits and this one especially jumped out at me from having spend some time in pennsylvania and in montgomery county, The States third largest, they are seeking to enforce local officials to count ballots by hand similar to Georgia Evoking Deep Conspiracy theories about corrupted Voting Machines and this other piece also jumped out, a case filed by the national committee in nevada saying 4000 noncitizens voted a claim rejected at the time by The States top election official, a republican. I do raise all of this because it is all part of the State Level Voter suppression efforts happening and i know you elevated this and were talking about it. What are you most concerned about right now . As you know, everything you do from the work you do . First off, we need to understand something. The republicans are afraid of the very people whom they say they want to represent. They dont want to have the american people engage in a full and free election. They are afraid if everybody who is the opportunity to vote actually does that, they will lose. They come up with these theories that are totally inconsistent with the facts. This notion of having Noncitizens Voting is belied by the statistics uncovered by the Heritage Foundation which looked at elections from 2002 through 2022 and found over 1 Billion votes were cast and 100 instances were noncitizens voted with the vast majority of whom did so by mistake. They are trying to fool around with this system now so they can gain an advantage. The bigger thing is they want to lay a foundation for challenges after the vote when i think theyre going to lose and bring further lawsuits. They are Coming Up with ways in which they could put in place at The State supreme Court Level people who will hear these lawsuits they bring and rule on them favorably. It is why we have endorsed candidates for The State supreme court in North Carolina, ohio, michigan, and texas, people who will decide cases on the basis of the facts and the law and not have a partisan lens as they approach these cases. This is all about trying to fool around with the results of the election. It really gets me when trump says it will be a rigged election. For him, all elections are rigged unless he wins in the things he says in the things they are saying in the lawsuits they are bringing are inconsistent with the facts. You raised these races and you have singlehandedly with the help of others elevated this into the minds of the public and we all remember what happened in wisconsin an important that was last year and tell us about for people who are not sure why they should pay attention for these races to determine the outcome on things like Abortion Rights and what else should people be aware of in terms of why these are important to pay attention to . On a daytoday basis, peoples lives in this country are impacted on what happens in The States and federal government. State legislatures have the capacity to pass, as we have seen, unbelievably taccone and antichoice laws and state supreme courts are the final arbiters of making many of these decisions and why we placed an emphasis on endorsing candidates who will do things in a fair appropriate way in The States i mentioned and why i think we have to make sure that, although, remember, this is an existential president ial election that people have to vote down ballot as well and look for people who stand for the american ideals in The State supreme Court Justices, again, ohio, texas, michigan, North Carolina. Those are critical races were some election challenges will undoubtedly be filed by the republicans and ultimately be decided in the majority of these cases will be decided in the State Court System and not in the federal courts and why these elections are so important. We are all used to seeing political spouses out on the Campaign Trail for president but we have never really saying a political spouse quite like Doug Emhoff. Why do you think that is important . After the Dobbs Decision came down, she called me right away and she was on Air Force 2 and said dougie, they actually did it and we knew it was coming. But the fact that the supreme court would take away a fundamental right that had been on the books for 50 years, a right that my mom, now 83, back in the day was fighting for Equality And Abortion rights. The first person i heard for after kamala was ella, 23 at the time. She texted me and said we need to fight and we need to do something about this. And then i literally heard from my mom saying the same thing. And think about this. My 83yearold Mother is going to enjoy more rights than ella . This is wrong. This is because of Donald Trump and he ran on a platform of women should be punished for seeking abortion and he said that. There is video. He ran on a platform appointing a supreme Court Justice who would overturn roe v. Wade and they did that. He is for a national abortion ban. Make no mistake. Where he said he will be the protector of women, that is yet more lies and gaslighting. He also said Women Wont have to think about it if i am elected. Women should be furious about this gaslighting and furious and turn this anger into action. You have also been Front And Center in the fight against antisemitism. Your faith is important to you. You have talked about it publicly. If the Vice President is elected, you would be the first jewishamerican to be a first partner or first gentleman or whatever you may call yourself. How does the history of that way on you at this moment . I took, and i take, Being Be First Jewish white House Principal ever very seriously. I am accountable for it. If you recall, even before october seven, and really at the urging of kamala, we leaned in against the fight of Anti Semitism on behalf of the Baris Harris Biden Administration and we took on a strategy to counter it which was released in may of 2023. When that horrific day on october seven happened, the administration was ready to take action and its something i have been working on and speaking about meeting with Hostage Families and it is intense. A lot of times i dont want to do it and it is to raw or emotional for me. She is The One who keeps pushing me out there because of the responsibility that i have in this role. She cares about these issues and she is out there fighting these issues just like anybody else. What really bothered me a week or so ago is when trump got out there at an event, an event purporting to fight Anti Semitism. He said file antisemitic things and long tropes that are just terrible. We have to speak out every single time when something like that happens. I will continue not to be afraid, not to be intimidated, not to live in fear, but to live openly and proudly as a jewish person. When you do hear him say things like that, and he said if he doesnt win, it will be essentially the fault of jewish americans one of the oldest tropes. I know you put a statement out at the time. Do you worry his putting a target on the Backs Of Jewish americans . He has. Take him at his word. He lies about a lot of things but you have to take him on his word about things like this. This is a disgusting tropes with this so called dual loyalties. It is an outrage. It is not just jewish people who should be outraged. Do you think he is anti semitic when he says things like that . You look at him and see the repetition of these type of words of things that are anti semitic . Of course it is and i have said that publicly. Definitely. I want to ask you about Mark Robinson. Were sitting here in North Carolina and you spoke of him at this event. He also reportedly recommended mine come from hitler is a good read and called himself a black nazi. He is still be nominee for the gubernatorial Race And Josh stein is obviously a great candidate. What do you make of that as you look at The State of the republican party . It is pure cowardice and shameful and it shouldnt be that way. We need a strong republican party. We need people like Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger who have endorsed Kamala Harris. You may not agree on every policy but you agree on who we are as americans and on our constitution and who leaders should be. When you have somebody who made comments like Mark Robinson who is clearly unfit and unhinged and shouldnt be running. The fact that Donald Trump was here in wilmingtont whe i am sitting, where he couldnt disavow Mark Robinson. He was trying to ignore it. But he didnt disavow what Mark Robinson said or his candidacy. It is just shameful. It is just shameful. He said he is a star and he said he is Martin Luther King jr. On steroids and not disavowing any of that so he is supporting Mark Robinson and those are the types of candidates that he is supporting and we cant have it and shows you many of the example why he is unfit and for any job let alone president of the united states. There is also an important interesting part of how people of talked about the role and how it has reshaped the perception of masculinity. Im not sure you planned on that but you are incredibly supportive as a spouse and has that been an evolution for you . Do you think it is part of the role you play is first gentleman cracked i did think about this. My dad was like this and i am like this. To me it is the right thing to do, support women. It is mutual with kamala and i. We support each other and have each others back. I have said many times when we lift up women or support women whether it is pay equity, child equity, family leave, and all of these issues in this situation, women shouldnt be less than or have less rights and treated differently. It is not the american way and it is not like its some woman succeeds in some dude is suffering it is not a oneto one relationship. When we lift up women we lift up families and the economy. When i was in the business world, it lifted up the organizations that i was in and certainly lifted up the White House and when you were there with you there and kamala as his Vice President , it was a great workplace there. There is a Popculture Phrase called Wife Guy which you are kind of known as and have you heard about this . I have heard it. How do you feel about it . Will if i do something i will share that. Right or a tshirt or mug. There are people who are not as comfortable with fear strong women, intelligent women and of course one of them is running against the Vice President Donald Trump. He seemed to be uncomfortable on the Debate Stage and he thought he was an agreed to a debate and you think he is scared of debating her . Yes. He should be. The other thing i think about a lot is how it must be for you when you see people attacking your wife. You had a pretty strong response recently when Governor Huckabee sanders attacked the Vice President suggesting that because she didnt have biological children she doesnt have anything keeping her humble. I know you spoke about that when you asked about it but i bet it passed you off at the time and what was your reaction initially as a Human Being . As a human and her husband, but also knowing how much she loves Coal And Ella and how much they love her and how they think of her as this three headed Parenting Machine and its inaccurate and disrespectful and it starts with the mispronunciation of the name, which the governor knows exactly what her name is and how it is pronounced. They are thinking that by beating people down or trying to, that somehow it shows strength instead of just talking about issues that help people. And attacking people for being a biological mother or not, which seems to be an obsession of her and Jd Vance and others. It is not where the american people are. There are so many families like my family and the harris family. There are so many women. I am part of one of them. Many people are. There are mother figures who mother children. It is wrong. It is inaccurate. It just shows who they are. What is abnormal about this years Vp Debate it is likely it will be the last time voters will see the contrast between the two tickets between them on a Debate Stage because Trump Wont accept another debate so for me this one is worth paying attention to more than it usually would be. He said he is able to semi articulate some kind of intellectual underpinnings of Donald Trumps rants and he is very smart. I dont think there is any doubt about that and i would never call him dumb by any means. Here is the thing. If you expect a repeat of harriss last debate were trump fell on his face, i have news for you. While trump rambles and lashes out and goes between one topic and another, Jd Vance has the ability to stay focused and discuss policy. And he has a deep understanding of how government works. When you add that to his devotion to trump and the ideas of the maga movement, things he once called cultural heroine, it will make for a different kind of debate. He may be less bombastic than Donald Trump and sound more thoughtful at moments and maybe a little more dry and policy focused. It does not mean he is any less dangerous and less extreme than his boss. As you watch the debate on tuesday, dont measure Jd Vance for basic Coherence And Self control.
