Untold stories of latinos and how they shaped america. Im jonathan capehart, this is the saturday show. We are just 38 days from the u. S. Presidential election in november and a dramatic escalation in the Middle East is taking Center Stage and sparking fears of a wider conflict in the region. Today, the Israel Defense forces and hezbollah confirmed that Hezbollah LeaderHassan Nasrallah was killed in targeted israeli airstrikes on the Groups Headquarters in Southern Beirut. The strike destroyed at least for residential complexes and damaged other buildings nearby. At least 11 people were killed and more than 100 injured according to the lebanese health ministry. The idf continued lobbing rockets into Lebanon Today targeting Hezbollah Infrastructure in Southern Beirut and issued Evacuation Orders for several neighborhoods as civilians flee to the north. Iran, condemned the strike, calling it a war crime. But so far, iran has not expressed any intention to retaliate. The White House said today that President Biden held a call with Vice President harris and the national Security Team for an update on the situation in the Middle East. The president also released a statement that said, quote, Hassan Nasrallahs death is a measure of justice for his many victims including thousands of americans, israelis and lebanese civilians but the president added, ultimately our aim is to deescalate the ongoing conflicts in both Gaza And Lebanon through diplomatic means. The State Department is urging americans to leave lebanon while commercial flights are still available and the u. S. Embassy order The Departure of Family Members of american diplomats due to volatile security conditions. Joining me now with the latest is Erin Mcglocklin, live from Tel Aviv, thank you for being here. What are you hearing from israeli leaders about the death of nasrallah and the next steps in lebanon . Jonathan, a few hours ago we heard from the israeli prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, addressing israelis in hebrew for the first time since the israeli military confirmed that killed Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of hezbollah, and in his statement to the israeli public, the Prime Minister explained the decision behind the assassination. Take a listen. I gave Instruction And Nasrallah is no longer with us. His killing brings close to the return of our people in the north to their homes and the return of the hostages from the south because as sinwar sees that they will come to his rescue, this increases the chance for hostages going back. Many in the region would dispute that calculus that somehow the death of Hassan Nasrallah would compel the leader of hamas, sinwar to release the hostages, some here arguing that if anything, it pushes the region further into the unknown. Now, in terms of the timing of all of this in his statement to the israeli public, prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that he made the decision to carry out the assassination early in the week, and that is notable because jonathan, if you remember around midweek, thats when we heard from u. S. And french officials unveiled their plan, that would create the space for a diplomatic resolution of this crisis, the nscs John Kirby saying that israel signaled that it was open to the plan and yet tonight, Benjamin Netanyahu is saying that he made the decision to assassinate Hassan Nasrallah earlier in the week. Todays events leaving lots of questions about that communication between Tel Aviv and washington, d. C. , jonathan. Is the idf expecting large Scale Retaliation from hezbollah . Reporter i think ive lost you, jonathan. Okay, Erin Mcglocklin, we will leave it there. Thank you for the live report. Lets bring in the former Supreme Allied Commander for nato admiral, as always, thank you for coming to the saturday show. I want to reread the last part of the statement from President Biden about the death of nasrallah he writes, ultimately our aim is to deescalate the conflicts in Gaza And Lebanon through diplomatic means. Is that even possible, when it seems as though the israeli Prime Minister and been especially given what Erin Mcglocklin just told us doesnt seem to want a diplomatic solution. Let me start with nasrallah, he has more blood on his hands from americans that i think many listeners really imagine, going back to when i graduated from the Naval Academy in the 1970s, hezbollah was Killing Americans in the early 80s in beirut. Hes been tied up in this for decades. No, theres no way to put anything on this but he is an enemy of the united states of america. Having said that, the way to think about this, jonathan is, israel is trying as you heard from there Prime Minister to get back into their homes and knocked back down the constant firing of missiles from hezbollah to the north. Here in the west and here we get to your excellent question, the west, both the u. S. , france, uk, european union, everybody is going to press for a ceasefire. I think it is unlikely in the immediate term to get a real ceasefire. Heres the good news, such as it is. I think it is also unlikely that this thing expands into a wider regional war, which i define as including iran, the united states then pulled in, i think the chances of that are actually low. We are going to see continued turbulence. You anticipate my next two questions. Can israel afford to have a conflict with hamas and gaza and with hezbollah on its northern border . Ill answer that is a former Supreme Allied Commander, the short answer is, yes, israel has the capability having subdued, shall we say, hamas, and gaza and they are in the process of decommissioning tunnels. The fighting has now shifted to the north. The Center Of Gravity military term, is up in the north against hezbollah, israel has plenty of Military Capability to take the fight north. And where we were a moment ago, will iran Step In, they are not interested in bringing iranians into the fight. I dont see that happening. Israel has plenty of Military Capability to continue to go after hezbollah in the north. You did it again because i was going to ask you about a wider conflicts but what about iran and you answer the question and the short answer is no. Can we talk about lebanon, all eyes were here in New York and washington with the visit of the ukrainian president this week as part of the united nations general assembly. And im just wondering, one of the goals of president zelinski in his meeting with the president was to get him to agree, to give permission, gave him permission to use long range weapons to strike deep inside russia as part of the effort to push back the russian war on ukraine. At this point in the war, why is President Biden still resistant to letting him do that . Let me first say to your point, this is why i love being on your show, jonathan, you are looking at something that not everyone is focused on at the moment and youre absolutely right to bring up ukraine in this. I think very significant decision on the part of the u. S. , to permit longerrange strikes into ukraine, using u. S. Weapons. I think ultimately, the u. S. Will agree to doing that. And my evidence would be, at every stage of this conflict, the u. S. Has been hesitant to provide patriot tanks, even stingers and javelins early on, and every stage, ultimately, we have ended up providing those systems, most notably, to include the f16s that are operating today. So i think we will get there and the answer to your question and its a good one, its a debatable point is, if we gave them permission to strike inside of ukraine, could it truly escalate the situation to where putin would use for example, a Tactical Nuclear Weapon . I think that is worth debating in my view, we have crossed this redline so many times, it doesnt make a lot of sense to hold the ukrainians back, given a 300 Mile Zone in russia, dont strike moscow or st. Petersburg but it makes sense to give them permission to reach and go after military targets. I think thats how this one comes out, jonathan. Admiral, thank you very much for coming to the saturday show. Always a treat. Com or call 1800sandals Yesterday for the first time as the democratic nominee the Vice President visited the southern border thus putting a spotlight on a top issue for voters in a seeming liability for her party, immigration. Vice president harris traveled to douglas, arizona, where she gave a Speech Laying out specific plans to reduce illegal crossings which includes keeping the border closed between ports of entry and also used her address to shine a light on Donald Trumps immigration hypocrisy. He continues to attack her on this issue but she reminded voters that it was trump who worked Behind The Scenes to prolong the immigration crisis. As president i wont only bring back the Border Security Bill that Donald Trump tanked, i will do more to secure our border. It was the strongest Border Security Bill we have seen in decades. It was endorsed by the border patrol union. And it should be in effect today. But Donald Trump tanked it. He picks up the phone and called some friends in congress and said stop the bill. Because you see, he prefers to run on a problem instead of fixing a problem. Of course, in true trump fashion, he has now denied any involvement in the failure of the bipartisan Border Security Bill and instead of offering any sound policy to address the issue, he continues to fall back on racism and white nationalism. A short while ago at an event in wisconsin, he ramped up his attacks on migrants while also taking an unhinged swipe at President Biden and Vice President harris. Across our border, theyve been taken out by their countries, and set free into the united states of america, so they are free to kill again. These are killers. Not even mentioning the , the gang members, the Drug Dealers , the child predators and the traffickers and women, mostly women, Joe Biden became mentally impaired, kamala was born that way. Joining me now, cedric richmond, a cochair for the harris walz campaign. Mr. Richmond as always thank you for coming to the saturday show. First, your reaction to that last bit that you just heard from Donald Trump . Thats a soundbite from a man that is not well. And i hate to put it that simple, but hes not. Even if you look at his response to him taking the Border Bill when he said he had nothing to do with it, there are multiple clips of him saying that he did. That he made Telephone Calls to kill it. In fact cedric, we have that sound. So everyone can hear for themselves what you are talking about. There is zero chance i will support this horrible, open borders the trail of america. Its not gonna happen. I noticed that, and i will fight it all the way. I notice a lot of the senators, a lot of the senators are blaming it on me i said okay, blame it on me, please. Make up some lives, like she said about the Border Bill that trump stopped. Number 1 i didnt stop it. Cedric, folks got to hear exactly what you were talking about, the first piece was from january of this year. Taking credit and the last piece was just last week. Denying he ever said what we just heard him say. Cedric, can you hear me . I can. You went out for a second and i will just say that the sad part is, i dont know if he knows the difference between The Truth and lies. And i used to say when i was in congress, when he told over 20,000 lies i thought just he was a habitual liar but im starting to think that he just cant tell The Truth. But heres the bigger part. It has always been about Donald Trump. Its never been about the american people. And so yes, he tanked the bill and did it for his own Self Gain and if you look at his political career, its all about his own political gain, thats why he winds up in trouble and thats why hes twice impeached, thats why hes indicted, because he put himself above the country, Above The Law and at some point we have to have an honest conversation about that he is in it just for himself so the contrast is, a harris walz campaign, thats going to wake up every day fighting for the american people, trying to bring costs down at the stores, trying to bring Housing Costs down, investing in an Opportunity Economy so people can prosper not just get by, they can get ahead. So it is a contrast and i hate to spend so much time talking about him because hes not deserving but we have an obligation to remind the american people of who he is and what he wants to do and that is, believe it or not, he is convincing all of these rural voters, many of them white, that he cares about them. No, he doesnt. He was in office for four years and passed a Tax Cut where middleclass and people aspiring to be in the Middle Class were paying for the Tax Cuts, the 2 Trillion in Tax Cuts that he gave to billionaires and the top 1 . Now hes talking about a 200 tariff on John Deere thats going to run up the cost of tractors and Farm Equipment thats going to further hurt rural america, this guy does not get it and its all about him and thats why i think Vice President harris and Governor Walz are going to continue to talk to the american people about their vision for them. Governor walz will have a big opportunity to talk to the american people when he debates senator Jd Vance at the debate i believe it is here in New York on tuesday, on october 1st. What will the mission be for Governor Walz, to expose vance as a fraud like his boss, defend the Vice President from attack, present the vision of a harris walz administration, or is it All Of The Above . I think its a little bit of All Of The Above. One the governor has to introduce himself to the rest of the country. And i think he will get a chance to talk about his values and the fact that as a public school teacher, as a coach, as a veteran, all those things that he has always looked at the greater good, The Common Good and how to lift this country up together, and i think hes going to do a magnificent job of that. I think Jd Vance has some things answer for. He was trumps biggest Credit Critic until he wasnt. And the things that he said about trump back then were absolutely right. You will see from Jd Vance, you will see a disciplined but a dishonest and divisive Conversation And Rhetoric coming from him. And it will not be based in fact, whatsoever. He has inherited the gene from his running mate, Donald Trump, and i think you will see a lot of that in the debate, unfortunately. After the debate, both the Vice President and Governor Walz will be going on a Bus Tour of central pennsylvania, edit things like at least one of the four principles, they have been in pennsylvania it seems, every day since the ticket was announced. Should i read anything into that, are yall concerned that pennsylvania is slipping away, just because of all the time thats being spent in pennsylvania . No, we actually believe that the voters in pennsylvania deserve to hear from the candidates, they need to know what we are going to do for them. I think the Vice President has been very clear that she wouldnt ban freight fracking, she didnt, she voted to expand it and she will continue it. And we have to make sure that people in pennsylvania understand that we want to build an economy that is working for everyone. And we want to listen to their concerns and address their concerns but we are spreading out all across the country because we have multiple paths to 270. Pennsylvania is a big part of it, george is a big part, North Carolina is a big part. Theres a big part but we are going to spend sometime everywhere but the people of pennsylvania deserve to hear from us. Cedric richmond, cochair of the harris walz campaign, congressman, thank you very much, as always, for coming to the saturday show. Thanks for having me. Adams is the citys first sitting mayor to be indicted and could face up to 45 years in prison for alleged bribery, fraud and foreign fundraising. Federal prosecutors accuse him of accepting more than 100,000 worth of gifts from turkey including free international flights on turkish airlines. Adams has pleaded not guilty, slamming the charges as quote, entirely based on lies. But he went even further, citing his fight with the federal government for help with the Migrant Crisis here, adam said, quote, i always knew that if i stood my ground for New Yorkers that i would be a target, and a target i became. Dude. New York CongressmanJerry Nadler and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasiocortez have called on adams to resign. He is ignoring those calls. Chuck schumer and House Minority Leader jeffries from the big apple, have not done so, for now. State and local law gives new York GovernorKathy Hochul the power to remove adams from our office but she said earlier this week that she has yet to make a decision and if adams resigns, or is removed, Public Advocate Williams would become the next mayor of the city of New York. Joining me now, republican strategist, Susan Dell personnel and democratic strategists and msnbc analyst, Basil Smikle Jr. Oh boy, okay. Ive been looking forward to this conversation because as a New Yorker and in exile in washington i cannot imagine a better grouping of people to talk about this with. This is bad. This is super, super bad. He says im not going. Im hanging in there, basil, can he hang in there . It is bad when it leaks out that youre going to be indicted on a wednesday, and then youve already put out your rebuttal and Thursday Morning 6 00 a. M. , the feds are rating your home, the official residence of the mayor of New York. But thats bad, theres even something else worse that happened. One of his top aides, his closest eight has her Apartment Or House rated, and shes coming back from vacation, getting off a plane at jfk and is approached and said give me your phone. Man, listen. Let me just, lets just go to his arguments first of all. One thing that concerns me is that he has frequently said that he is being targeted and attacked in the same ways that David Dinkins was, no. Lets be clear about that. Very different mayoral team. David jenkins was a person that brought the city together. He never talked about me, he always talked about we and by the way, hes never been indicted. The second point that i would made, first of all bidens doj indicted Bidens Son and i can tell you the Harris Campaign and the biden administration are not paying attention to you , you know why, because you had no role at the dnc. Lets talk about that. Nobody is paying attention to you except the city because they are watching you walk out of the courtroom having been fingerprinted. That should be concerning to all of us and whats really concerning to the nation is that when he goes and says that Migrant Crisis, and the way i handled it is what is concerning everybody right now and its the retribution. He sounds like Donald Trump, in many ways. And whats problematic about that is if he says the Justice Department is attacking him, it mimics the Talking Points that republicans are using to attack democrats, so when the majority of the democratic majority of the house runs through New York and you are allowing and giving space for republicans to use that language against democrats, that is a problem, and you Cant Stay in office if you are going to continue to do that. Do you think he will be mayor by this time next week . I think hes going to try but i also think theres going to be a Ground Swell of folks trying to get him out. Susan, both Senate MajorityLeader Schumer and House Minority Leader jeffries have said, let the process run its course. But theres no Ringing Endorsements here. How significant is it that the two congressional leaders, the big congressional leaders the democratic party are mayor adams constituents. Its significant in the politics of it all, but, mayor adams will never be as strong a position to make a deal or do whatever hes going to do as long as he stays in office, the minute you step down is the minute you lose any chance you have, he will stay in as long as he can. I agree with Everything Basil said, i will bring it down to New Yorkers and this is what i think he will not be able to stay. You have a Police Commissioner that resigned because he was raided by the fbi. The Police Commissioner. You have Fire Department officials who are under indictment. You have an investigation of the sheriff , you have the Health Commissioner resigning. You have the Education Counselor resigning as a result of the Fbi Rating his home. And then you even have Corporation Counsel resigning. Who is running the city and theres also a Deputy Mayor for public safety, Police Commissioner, Fire Department, oh, she resigned, too, a couple of months ago. And the sheriffs office, where is there any sense of literally, order in this city and that will not be tolerated. And i think in addition to the scandal and as someone who has to represent people who have dealt with them, this is not it. You dont get in this much trouble for turkey. Right, the big thing that is saying out there is Governor Hochul, shes got the power to remove him, does she use it . She cannot and will not use it unless leaders from the african american latino community, the base, gives her Permission Structure to do so. She cant go ahead of them because by the way, she will be running for reelection in 2026. Thats after the mayoral election. So, shes not going to go ahead of the black leadership and the leadership of his base, to do that. So, in some ways, shes got to let Hakeem Jeffries, Greg Meeks and eve are even Chuck Schumer to come in and say you know what if hes not going to go, youve got to take him out. They have to stand with her when she does this. Season, to my mind, the most powerful person in New York City right now is my colleague, i think, the reverend Al Sharpton because he is having a meeting with black leadership, im not sure when but its this weekend. If he comes out and says anything that even looks like mayor adams should step aside, do you think that would give Governor Hochul the cover to be like more forcefully say, youve got to go. To some extent in that he has to stand beside her when he says it. Lets not forget reverend sharpton, he really is close to Eric Adams. He has a longstanding relationship, so if he gets there, then you know, its all over. I will say very quickly, if anyone thinks that Hakeem Jeffries or Chuck Schumer or any prominent democrat is skittish about trying to get mayor adams out, i would send them back about 2 to 3 months when there was a Joe Biden issue that we were trying to deal with and there were a lot of folks actually or subtly saying, you need to step aside, Theres History and track record. He wont do it but i do think that if the Minority Leader would Step In to run for mayor, Hakeem Jeffries would be amazing and just what the city needed. Oh my god, he would be great. He would be great but he would be even better as speaker of the house. Thank you very much for coming back to the saturday show. Up next, a new Msnbc Film focusing on the role of Black Women voters. Evernorth health services Black Women have long played a key role in shaping american politics from being the foundation of the democratic party to saviors of democracy itself. But they are not a monolith. Symonesanderstownsend, cohost of msnbcs the weekend and legal analyst Melissa Murray went On The Road to talk to a variety of Black Women across the country from the cities to the suburbs for their new special, Black Women in america, the road to 2024. Heres what a former white House Official and the chair of the 2024 democratic national Convention Committee had to say about Vice President harris. If we want a taste of freedom. If we want to believe that this democracy needs to be saved then we have to be disappearance in it and we cant continue to use the narrative that black Men Wont show up because its a female. What is true in my humble opinion is that we have to change how men see women and we have to give them the visual of the commanderinchief and i believe that Vice President harris has done that quite well. Joining me now cohost of Black Women in america, the road to 2024, Melissa Murray, shes also a msnbc legal analyst and a professor at Nyu School of philosophy. Uci and giving you the props here. Why was it important for you and symone to travel the country and actually talk to Black Women about this election . We heard to the Election Cycle that Black Women are firmly on the side of the democratic party, they are stalwarts, the backbone of the party but we found in fact, they are varied in their views, yes they may identify as democrats but they are not all sure to go to the polls, they are not all sure to vote for, harris, they want answers and they believe the party has taken them for granted over the last couple of years and they want the candidates to earn their votes. So we talked to them. We wanted to know if the conventional wisdom was true. So, im of a certain age and i was very surprised and talking to some of these younger millennial women that they werent necessarily animated to get out to vote. They werent trump curious, not like the story we are hearing about black men but they werent sure that they had a reason to get up on Tuesday November 5th and vote for any candidate. That surprised me. That surprises me, too, because even if you are not trump curious, what the other guy is saying should ring alarm bells. And to be clear, when we talked to them they were like we dont like how he talks about immigrants, or muslims, we are terrified about what he might do if he were president with regard to gaza but at the same time, it wasnt enough to say, i dont like him therefore im getting up on November 5th and going to the polls for her. How much salience is it for them that if elected, Vice President harris would be the first woman, but also the first black woman to achieve that position. So salient. They recognize that this was an historic opportunity to elect the first black woman but they also talked about Hillary Clintons run in 26 2016. And that never happened. Many were energized about hillary clinton. Many of them came out for Joe Biden and they felt that they didnt get everything they wanted out of the biden presidency. So there wasnt a sense of affection necessarily or disaffection about the candidate but there was disaffection with the prospect of politics as usual. The clips that ive seen, there is the one of, i dont never which one of you asked the question but it was the suburban question. How many of you, the fact that, when you hear suburban women, its synonymous, synonymous with white women. They mentioned that. When people talk about suburban voters and engaging suburban voters, they were clear, they are clear, they are not talking about us. The suburbs are diversifying, they are not monolithic, lots of affluent Black Women, Middle ClassBlack Women, they are there and they need to be engaged and they didnt feel like people were talking about them. And you know, that is absolutely right because when you talk about suburban voters and you dont talk about Black Women, or latinos, you are missing a huge swath of the electorate. Melissa murray, thank you very much, congratulations on this special. Watch tomorrow at 9 00 eastern for the msnbc special Black Women in america, the road to 2024, also streaming on peacock. Joining me now is John LeguizamoHost And Executive producer of american historia, the untold history of latinos. John, welcome to the saturday show. You know, this project started eight years ago with your one man show latin history for morons, which was inspired by your son. How did Parenting Tune you into a History Buff . My son was not getting any latin history, and we are equal to whites in population in New York City the Johns Hopkins University did a study and found that 87 of latino contributions to the making of the u. S. Are not in history textbooks. So thats what my show is, putting those 87 13 more, back into American Culture as an antidote to our erasure, our deletion, and are being crossed out. You know, your series is twice as long as your broadway show. So what have you been able to add in this new format . I try to say are you trying to say my show was long . Im a little longwinded. But this one includes, you know, im getting granular here and im getting specific you know, like talking about the incredible things weve done in this country like finishing the railroad, after our asian Brothers And Sisters were kicked out. We survived a lot of oppression, not as much as my black Brothers And Sisters because over 9000 black people were lynched in america but 6000 of us latinos were lynched, burned alive, shot, massacred you know, our womens were experimented on and sterilized in california. We fought the first case against segregation, it was a latin family in denver, colorado. In the first Young Boy 1914 in texas for disrespecting a white man and the first Lynching In America was a latina. So out of all this oppression, we still built america, alongside my black Brothers And Sisters and here we are, we hit an Inflection Point where we contribute 3. 6 trillion to the gdp in america, if we were our own country, we would be the fifth largest nation in the world, bigger than brazil, france, and what do we get for it . Very little. Immigration has been in the headlines this week with the Vice President visiting the border and Donald Trumps comments about socalled migrant crime. John, how do you hope this documentary changes the narrative around latino immigrants . Well, the fact that we keep forgetting that everybody in america is an immigrant except native americans. This is the greatest nation that was stolen, right . And latino people are mostly indigenous, and that court or in the southwest was a porous corridor, and in our show we show, and they found artifacts from arizona all the way down to central and south america. This was a huge corridor of our indigenous people, it was like grand central station. We have to understand that latinos, immigrants, run the economy. I mean we do all the jobs that nobody wants to do, without these latino immigrants because thats a we are talking about when we say migrants, we aint talking about irish and great britain, we are talking about latin people select stop with the euphemisms, mr. Trump. And these people are doing all the Essential Labor that nobodys doing, they are the first responders, there picking all of our food and the latino immigrants that died in maryland on that bridge, fixing the bridge, thats what we do, we fix this country and we build it and then we get kicked out and we get nothing for all of our labor except you know, hate from trump. Well John Leguizamo, you have done yet again, another service with your documentary, huegla, the untold history of latinos. John, great to see you. Its been a couple of years since ive seen you last.
