This happened in israeli strike on an Apartment Complex in a beirut. Israeli prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu releasing a new statement just this afternoon taking credit for ordering the assassination sang, quote, nasrallah was not a terrorist. He was the terrorist. According to lebanese Health Ministry at least 11 people were killed and 108 injured in the attack protesters took to the streets of tehran as the Supreme Leader declared five days of mourning, urging his people to stand with hezbollah. Officials claim a general was also killed on friday adding they expect to soon deployed troops to lebanon. President biden calling to enhance the u. S. Military Defense Posture in the area to deter aggression and reduce the risk of a broader regional war. And the u. S. State department ordering the evacuation of certain employees and their Family Members from the embassy in beirut there is a lot to talk about. We will go first to Matt Bradley in beirut. Lots of new developments in justice last hour, particularly that Yahoo Statement and the embassies of evacuation would bring us up to date on the situation now. Reporter the embassy has been saying they want american citizens to leave and not to be saddled with hundreds of thousands of americans listen or dual american lebanese citizens were clamoring to get out or there is a ground invasion. That is the big fear here. We just heard that the Israeli Embassy itself. This is new as of today is going to be evacuating nonessential Staff And Family members from the embassy. I spoke with some folks there and they said folks are packing up and getting ready to leave. That is a pretty big step in some of the Safety Concerns that are facing americans with the embassy here in lebanon. Even though the american embassy has been saying for months, ever since the beginning of the war, All The Way back on October 7 or october 8th, the day after one has block for Start Firing at israel. It just shows the embassy is expecting something big that could be coming. At the same time we did hear from Benjamin Netanyahu in his first Comments Sense Nasrallah was killed. We also are Hearing Reaction from the president and Vice President , separately, in statements today. The present thing it is, quote, a measure of justice for his many victims including thousands of americans, israelis and lebanese civilians. The Vice President echoing that sentiment and adding, quote, we have been working on a diplomatic solution along the Israel Lebanon Border so that people can safely return home on both sides of the border. Diplomacy remains the best path forward to protect civilians and achieve lasting stability in the region. We have talked about that stability being a major concern for the biden administration over the last year now and even more so in the wake of this news, especially as we continue to see these strikes by the idf continue in lebanon. Exactly what the White House has been trying to avoid. In that statement from the president and Vice President , theyre saying that they are hopeful a diplomatic solution can still be reached. Give me a sense, mark, how likely it is that this conflict will escalate to an allout regional war following the death of hezbollahs leader. Can israel achieve its goals, which they are returning their 70,000 citizens to the north with a diplomatic agreement. In essence, the lebanese government forcing hezbollah to pull back to the river. I dont think we are there yet. Hang on. How do you have a diplomatic agreement if you have the head of hezbollah killed. Who steps into the void to negotiate that . They will be a Successor Name shortly. And the lebanese government will have a somewhat, not much control but they have some influence. That is who we are negotiating with. The real question goes back to iran as well. I know we are jumping around with what iran wants to do. Do they want to see their proxy destroyed as well after all, hezbollah, is an aircraft carrier. It is a forward base for iran. That is their deterrence in stopping israel from conducting a nuclear strike on iran he and Facilities Iran does not want to see hezbollah totally dismantled. There is some diplomatic solution here. I do see that i dont we are an allout war. Again, if big if what role the u. S. Play . Officials said they do not want a war but if it happens, with the White House provide additional support to israel on top of what it is given for the Hamas Conflict . The u. S. Has already said publicly and directly to hezbollah over the summer that they will stand with israel and defend israel in the event of an escalation. Defending israel looks more of the same. More support for the iron door, the iron dome. More help in intercepting missiles. When they coming from hezbollah or the houthis. I dont see why the u. S. Would not do that. The u. S. Does not want to see escalation but they have been repeating that since October 7. That is the last thing they want. That is also the last thing that the biden administration wants. Like mark said i do not think a full escalation is inevitable i do not expect iran to get involved. Iran does not want to get involved. They would rather have their proxies do this for them. U. S. Defense of israel provides a strong deterrent in that way. What i do expect is something that last a bit longer than we are used to in this region. The fact is that i find israel, lately, the government seems to be viewing the situation on the ground, especially with the way things have gone and hezbollah, who has been lobbing missiles since october 8th. I dont think he has a vision of the day after. The only thing he wants is to decapitate and dismantle as these Terrorist Groups as much as possible. If that is the goal, mark, what you look to happen in the next few days cure what ends this immediate incursion here . The israelis will continue what they are doing right now.
