Mayor Eric Adams is expected to face charges by federal prosecutors out of the Southern District Of New York as early as today. Thats according to two sources familiar with the inmatter. The indictment was sealed as of last noegt, but cnbc is reporting that the indictment accuses adams of criminal conduct related to donations of his 2021 mayoral campaign. The source telling cnbc the indictment mentions up to 20 Million in donations that adams campaign received as a result of a matching Funds Program that the Citys Campaign Finance program offers candidates for small dollar donations made by new York City residents. The source also says the indictment alleges adams traveled to turkey to receive illegal contributions. Adams would be the first new York City mayor to be criminally charged while still in office. Now, its important to note the specific charges were not immediately clear, and spokespeople for both the fbi and the u. S. Attorney for the Southern District Of New York declined to comment late Last Night. Meanwhile, mayor adams released a statement in response denying any wrongdoing while vowing to stay in office. He then released a video addressing his fellow new yorkers. It is now my belief that the federal government intends to charge me with crimes. If so, these charges will be entirely false, based on lies, but they would not be surprising. I always knew that if i stood my ground for All Of You, that i would be a target and a target i became. As of now adams still intends to run for reelection next year. The Adams Administration was already reeling from a sear as of high level resignations from at least four federal probes. Earlier this Week Mayor adams tried to downplay several of those key staff departures including the police commissioner, city halls top attorney, and the citys health commissioner. The Schools Chancellor has also announced hes stepping away. And yesterday before the indictment was announced new york democratic Congressman Alexandria Ocasiocortez called on adams to resign, citing what she called a flood of ongoing resignations and investigations. There had always been whispers about adams even before he was elected to office, and weve seen for about a year now word of these investigations. Talk to us about the series of what we know, a lot of we dont know, but talk to us about the seriousness of these potential charges. They are serious, john. If they involve the Campaign Contributions from turkey that violate the law receiving foreign Campaign Contributionings and violate the law on bribery because according to reports there was a Consulate Building a High Rise that the turkish government wanted completed, but the Fire Department put the kibosh on it because it wasnt up to code. Well, after the election they got their certificate of occupancy, at least a temporary one. So the question is was that because they apparently donated all this money to the future mayor, and then he took action . That could be the bribery count. So well see later today, i think, how serious this is. But, you know, if the feds have been looking at your phone and your ipad for over a year that its going to go down. Yeah, certainly his entire Inner Circle also seems to be under investigation as phones and ipads seized from many top officials. Walk us through the Time Line here. Lets say the indictment is indeed unsealed later today, what happens next to adams in terms of when he has to surrender . How quickly this might go to trial . And adams said he wants it to happen fast. And do we think he can survive this politically . No, politically. People were already calling for his resignation before this. And as far as the Time Line, well, i think the federal government will work out with adams lawyers a surrender. Youre not going to see a perp walk, and then youll have initial appearance where hell hear the charges and get a bond to be out pretrial. Hes not going to be kept pretrial in jail and the Big Question for me is does he resign or does the Governor Step in and remove him . And what does president ial candidate Kamala Harris say about it . Donald trump says the Department Of Justice is weaponized. Of course this puts the lie to that because this is a prominent democratic official. For a time adams and President Biden were aligned but adams turned critical of the biden policy from the White House and the two ive been told last Night Havent spoken for over two years. The White House had kisanced themselves from adamsven before these investigations. Lastly and briefly this is part one. There could be other charges coming. We dont know the fate of other probes. If it does remain this, is there a chance he could beat . Unlikely. 97 of these cases are guilty verdicts for the feds. They get their person. And unless youre mark cuban, for example, its a hard road to fight the feds. The best thing for Eric Adams to keep trying to rail against the feds as a political prosecution, but its getting harder to say that when its the same Department Of Justice also prosecuting Hunter Biden and congressman quaer, a democrat and its the same Justice Department that Let Matt Gates Go under charges even though he was being investigated by bill barr. I think he loses on that, and i think he ultimately loses in court because you have all these associates of him who are perhaps cooperating. At the very least their electronic devices were seized. There are strong rumors one of the challengers might be the former governor of new york, andrew cuomo. Well have more on this story throughout the morning. We switch gears now to the president ial race, and Vice President Kamala Harris is giving more details about her economic policy proposals. In a speech she delivered in pittsburgh yesterday, the democratic nominee called her agenda pragmatic and promised to build up the Middle Class by investing more in manufacturing and eliminating College Degree requirements for federal jobs. Harris also criticized Donald Trumps proposals saying hes simply a candidate for the wealthy. As president i will be grounded in my fundamental values of fairness, dignity, and opportunity. And i promise you i will be pragmatic in my approach. I will engage in what Franklin Roosevelt called bold, persistent, experimentation. Because i believe we shouldnt be constrained by ideology and instead should seek practical solutions to problems. I intend to chart a new way forward and grow americas Middle Class. Donald trump intends to take america backward to the failed policies of the past. He has no intention to grow our Middle Class. And certainly harris has received some criticism largely unfairly shes not offered specifics for plans. She certainly did yesterday there in pittsburgh. Pennsylvania, of course, is perhaps the most important state on the electoral college map. And Donald Trump confirmed yesterday what had been widely rumored, that he plans to return to butler county, pennsylvania, at the exact same fair grounds where he was shot back in july. Now theyre going to have a rally there in early october. Talk to us what the campaign is trying to do. Obviously a lot of symbolism here. Yes. This was really the most iconic moment of the campaign, the image of him standing up, blood on his ear, raising his fist saying fight, is something his supporters really rallied out. It was a big Fundraising Outpour for the campaign. Him going back to focus on the campaign has turned into strength for him. Weve seen broadly theyve focused Orn Assassination attempts. There was one a couple weeks ago at his Golf Course in florida as well as the campaign has also said theyve been briefed about potential Assassination Attempts in the works by iran. So this is kind of where you see trump creating a message here about the, look, i am here to fend off forces of evil, essentially. Youre actually finding even though Consumer Confidence has dipped off considerably and its lowest since august 2021, consumers are still spending as much as they have been previously. Its that spend that will continue to give retailers as well as consumers overall that the kind of confidence that they can continue to spend as well. So youre finding the oecd is raising its projections for growth not just in the united states but globally as well including the u. K. That proposal was unveiled in a joint statement late Last Night between president Joe Biden and french president emmanuel macron. Its been endorsed by the European Union as well as several arab nations including Saudi Arabia and qatar. Two american officials tell The New York Times they hope the ceasefire would then lead to a permanent end to the fighting at the israel lebanon border, which has threatened to throw the region into a fullscale war. Unfortunately, the vibe im getting out of israel is not in favor of the ceasefire. My sources in israel are telling me that the rightwing of the Netanyahu Party is hard over on continuing the combat. The idf is being told the israeli Defense Force is being told be ready to go on the ground, two Reserve Brigades called up. The head of the idf is on the front lines kind of Raising Morale against the troops, so i am hopeful always that there could be a ceasefire. I give big kudos to the secretary in going after these things. I dont see it happening in the immediate future, but lets help. So the thought had been if this were to happen the ceasefire would come first, 21day pause and that might even create some Breathing Room to revisit ceasefire talks in gaza as well. Lets say youre right and sources are correct and this doesnt happen, what would an escalating conflict, a Ground War in Lebanon Look like . It would look a lot like 2006. 20 years ago the israelis came across that border, the conflict went on for quite a long period of time. It included israel attempting to hold the ground to the north all the way up to the letani river. It would be a pretty substantial incursion, thats the bad news. The good news such as it is, i think its unlikely it would spread beyond southern lebanon. I dont see the iranians coming into the combat. This is a state that, during the republican national convention, the Trump Team was so confident. They said, we dont need to spend any more money there, dont need to spend time there. We have it in the bag. Polls were showing, more or less, a dead heat. Now, the gubernatorial candidate, mark robinson, is involved in a huge scandal threatening to bring trump down, as well. How does each Campaign View what now is an extraordinarily important battleground . North carolina has become perhaps the single most important Battleground State this cycle. In large part, because of the scandal going on with Lieutenant Governor Mark robinson, challenging the democratic attorney general Josh Stein to be governor of the state. Trump has embraced him. Trump has felt pretty good about his chances in North Carolina. Robinson has become a liability for Trumps Campaign in many ways, not least of which the folks in the state who have Known Robinson for who he is for decades before this. Now, trump is showing up to the state, and people are wondering, what is his relationship with robinson anymore . What we can tell you and what you know is that the Trump Campaign doesnt want robinson appearing with him in person. Meanwhile, im getting texts, calls, emails from democratic operatives and sources who are like, by the way, did you see robinson said this thing . Oh, have you seen this . We have this coming out. Theres a lot more to come with North Carolina, i would say. Again, just creates a liability for trump and his campaign. Yeah, trump didnt mention robinson in any of his recent North Carolina events but hasnt publicly disavowed him either. Alexi, lets talk about the rhetoric here from trump. Incendiary, inflammatory, also sort of tired, sort of same old, same old. Yet, his base still seems to be thrilled by it. Do we think some of the Swing Voters will be turned off or respond . I talked about this on my last podcast episode, in sync with alexi, so hopefully everyone will check it out. Whats fascinating, especially with Swing Voters, folks are looking for specific issues from trump on the ones they care about. On the economy, folks are looking for answers beyond a Tax Cut for every new constituency or a tariff hed impose on another country, not helping the economic situation of people in this country. In the speech you played from trump yesterday, what is most revealing to me is when he said that Senior Citizens who dont vote for him need a mental Acuity Test or cognitive test to prove theyre okay. A lot of voters wanted a debate with trump, many debates including trump to measure his cognitive fitness for office. In the Nbc News Poll you guys put out a couple days ago, i believe Kamala Harris had a 20 Point Advantage with voters on who they viewed as being mentally fit to hold office. I thought that was a staggering number on top of his comments yesterday, sort of willingly bringing up, voluntarily bringing up this idea that some people, not himself, needed cognitive testing. Yeah, i think theyre playing it smart and maybe a little safe, but i do think that the comparisons are a little unfair. Of course, Donald Trump sits down with, like, youtubers who are actually illlliterate. Theyre sitting down with reputable organizations, answering questions. Harris and walz have questions and intellectually serious ideas they could put forward. Donald trump is sitting down with folks who traffic in Ufc Fights and online conspiracy theories. Jd vance is taking questions from reporters publicly at his rally almost as some sort of performance, to sort of say, look at me, im not afraid to take questions from reporters in front of All Of You. As you see, he takes a question from a reporter and berates them. I would say the Harriswalz Team will keep doing what theyre doing.
