We carried this economic speech in its entirety for almost an hourandahalf yesterday. We are told the rest of his speech will echo what we heard yesterday. Basically saying. For years now since he was defeated by President Biden in 2020, and forced to leave the white house, trumps economic message has been the same. It has been a message of doom and gloom. Now it is centered around the idea the biden administration ruined the american economy. But that idea is getting less and less believable. The economy is doing really badly. The third straight closed. The S P 500 also closing at all time highs. No Vice President in history has done more damage to the united States Economy than Kamala Harris. The dow is up 67. The nasdaq up 43. S p 500 up seven and a quarter. Extending into further record territory. Kamala harris is a one woman economic recking ball. That will drive our country into a depression like in 1929. Let the balloons release. The Blue Chips make history for the fourth straight day. Trumps economic pitch is built on the premise the u. S. Economy is a disaster. But that is simply not the case. And it is becoming harder and harder for the Trump Campaign to pretend it is. This weekend, trumps running Mate Jd Vance went to a Grocery Store in pennsylvania to talk about the price of eggs. A series of awkward interactions with customers. Jd vances Chip Malfunctions when he is forced to interact with Human Beings in everyday settings. Vance claimed the cost of a dozen eggs had skyrocketed to 4 a dozen even though right behind him, literally, you can see multiple cartons of eggs on sale for 2. 99 a dozen. Dont get me wrong, inflation is still a real issue. It has come down considerably since Peak Summer of 2022. It is down to 2. 5 . A three year low. And many americans know that. Because most americans buy their own eggs and know what they cost. Thats the underlying issue with the broader trump stance narrative. It is not based on anything. His vision for what he would do is so disastrous, trumpS Pitch is essentially a combo of tariffs and Tax Cuts. That is so bad, even the deeply conservative Wall Street Journal editorial board, even they are not buying it. Donald trump is giving u. S. Companies a reason to think Kamala Harris might be better for their business. He is making tariffs his highest priority and that wont help the economy if he wins. To hear trump tell it he will cut taxes left and right and replace the revenue that would have been gained from the taxes with massive tariffs. Of anywhere between 10 to 200 on all imported consumer goods. Thats the plan. If it sounds weird to you, thats because the math doesnt work. Trumps own Alma Mater found that trumps system would add almost 6 Trillion to the national debt. And those prices from the massive 200 tariff . They would be passed directly onto the consumer. The american ones. The Center For American Progress found trumpS Plan would cost the typical american family somewhere between 2,500 and 3,900 more just to buy the same stuff they are buying now. In poll after poll, both nationally and in the Swing States that will decide this election, american voters say their number one priority is the economy. That presents Vice President harris with a very real opportunity. The Washington Post compiled Polling Averages from when Donald Trump was running against Joe Biden. Trump led biden on the economy by 12 points but now trump is only ahead of Kamala Harris by six points. She cut that gap in half. So it would seem that at least some people are listening to what trump is saying on the economy and listening to What Harris has to say about the economy and they are turning toward harris. Now dont get me wrong. Six points is still six points. And that is why today while trump was giving his economic pitch in north carolina, harris was in pennsylvania making her pitch. And while a lot of the substance of that pitch was based on Policy Proposals we have heard from harris before, 25,000 down Payment Assistance to first time home buyers, increasing a small start up Business Tax Credit to 50,000, increasing the child Tax Credit to 6,000 for the first year of a childs life. While the meat of her pitch remains similar, the way she haS Presented those proposals felt designed to appeal to the very specific voters she very much still needs to win over. The cost of living in america is still just too high. You know it and i know it. Look. I am a capitalist. I believe in free and fair markets. For Donald Trump, our economy works best if it works for those who own the big skyscrapers. Not those who actually build them. Not those who wire them. Not those who mop the floors. Well, i have a very different vision. Joining me now is connecticut senator Chris Murphy who is on the Ballot Running for a third term alongside the Harris Walz Ticket this november. Senator, its great to see you. In addition to having math on her side, which is no small thing, there is also the reality that she has to combat the fact she is an incumbent and also running on the idea of change which is important to american voters. I want to play a little sound from Jd Vance tonight. He is responding to harris economic address today. Lets take a listen. Lets dispense with this idea that Kamala Harris is going to fix the very problem she caused. Kamala harris is why we have Sky High inflation. What is the appropriate strategy for democrats on that . That is the only rejoiner you really get from the trump team. If she was going to do all this stuff, why hasnt she done it yet . Yeah. Listen. I mean, she has it right. Donald trump cares only about himself and his maralago friends. We know that because he was in power. And what happened when Donald Trump was in power . His only domestic accomplishment was a massive Tax Cut for himself and his corporate friends. The economy was in ruins when he left. Unemployment was skyrocketing. People were out of work. Of course in the middle of a pandemic that was mismanaged by Donald Trump. And we are living every day in a economy getting better. Inflation is coming down, more people are at work and we are rebuilding industrieS People thought were dead like the Microchip Industry that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have restarted. You have to hammer home the contrast over and over again. People know it, they believe it. They know Donald Trump only cares about himself. That his only accomplishment was a massive Tax Cut. Kamala harris has to be bold. Every single Campaign Stop of talking to people about what she is going to do. Invest in the middle class. As you said at the outset of this show, when the american people listen to these two messages are increasingly coming to the conclusion that Kamala Harris is for them. And Donald Trump is for just him. And his maralago cronies. I spoke to a few undecided Union Voters. And what is, among the things that was remarkable about that trip was the degree to which against all odds, all the things you just reminded us of, Donald Trump still in their imagination is better on the economy. I want to play this sound. For everybody to hear from one of the people Donald Trump has entranced. How well he has shepherded the american economy. Lets take a listen. Can you talk to me a little bit about what in particular he said that has appealed to you . The economy. The economy was the best it has been in a long time under him. Immigration was under control for the most part. Obviously, you are still going to have some. But for the most part it was far more under control than what it is right now. Those are the changes i would like to see. We will set aside the immigration piece. Just the economy piece. I understand why Kamala Harris is making economic speeches. Sitting down with our colleague stephanie ruhle. She has to make the case. But how do you reach that guy . He doesnt think about covid or Donald Trumps mismanagement of the crisis. Doesnt think about anything other than inflation. Thats the case to be made . We do live in a shirts and skins world today. There are many voters who maybe come to Donald Trump through cultural issues. Through hiS Position on choice or immigration. Some voters do want that wall and dont want immigrants and decide to endorse every single one of hiS Positions without a lot of deep analysis. But, the thing that Donald Trump i think did well in his first campaign was identify the way the global economy has screwed the american worker. There are a lot of folks who remember the fact that Donald Trump was talking about china when a lot of other people werent. As it turned out, he did nothing to rebuild industry. He helped companies out source more work. Kamala harris had a specific plan to reindustrialize the united states and bring jobs back from china. But you have to recognize that we got it wrong for a long time. I think if you want to be honest with the american people, the american people want you to be honest with them. You have to level with them that republicans and democrats made a bad bet on globalization. And admit that failure. And chart the plan on how you are going to solve the problem and i think there are a lot of people out there that are not always convinced that democrats understand how badly things went wrong. So being clear about the mistakes we have made allows you to authentically communicate the real solutions that somebody like Kamala Harris has to correct for those mistakes. Donald trump invokes his Tariff Solution every third word on the stump. Do you think that is a potential weak point for harris to exploit . He is talking about slapping John Deere if they move to mexico. With 200 tariff. That is a catastrophically bad idea on multiple levels and i wonder how you think Vice President harris and democrats should talk about it. It iS Pretty simple. You dont have to get into the weeds of tariff policy. HiS Plan is really simple. A massive Tax Cut for him and his friends. A massive Tax Increase on everybody else. Why . Because all that Donald Trump cares about is himself. He will sell Anybody And Everybody out in order to help himself so his economic plan is to screw you as a means to help himself. I just think that is a simple accurate and winning Message Juxtaposed against Kamala Harris plans which is to raise taxes on the very wealthy. That was the overwhelming response i got from young male Union Voters in michigan. When i asked them how they were going to vote. They get more news from social media. These are the undecided. The unhappily committed and uncertain voters who can make the difference in this tight president ial election. They are challenging old perceptions about how identity affects voting. That Rivetting Story fits in with my own reporting. Thank you for being here. When biden there was someone who said i dont want either one of them. You are make ago distinction here. You are saying they are undecided or unhappily committed and describe the choice ahead as the lesser of two evils. How is that different . So the reason they dont hate both candidates is they dont know enough about Kamala Harris to hate her. Your segment portrayed it perfectly. These are young people, they tend to be more black, more hispanic than the overall Voting Population and they are very disgruntled with the way things are going. Concerned about run away inflation. The price of Health Care. The fact they cant buy a home because of interest rates. And they are not just obsessive about politics. They are not watching this show every night. They are definitely not. They are probably never watching this show and they are probably never watching the New York Times. They exist in a different universe of information. To call It Information implies there is an interest in current events. It makes when i came out of that meeting i thought it will be really hard for the Harris Campaign in particular to disabuse these young men of the notion that Donald Trump was better on the economy and make the argument. Just to get the policy out there. What a lot of these voters say in addition to the lesser of two Evils Line which by the way is something i heard from more than one person i interviewed. And these are people that were selected for new york timeS Polling at random. So this is not, this isnt like, we sat a bunch of people down. Something like that. These were people randomly selected in a poll. And i called a lot of them back. They felt better about the trump years. Inflation was a lot lower and they dont spend a lot of time thinking about the Count Trover City he creates. Look what happened after the debate and the ridiculous line about eating cats and dogs. They may have heard of that but it is not in their News Feed constantly. So, if it is, it is something they kind of tune out as noise. I found the same thing talking with the folks i spoke with. And not only are they not swayed by trumps inflammatory rhetoric, a lot of them recognize that Kamala Harris has a better temperament. Is more of a byeS Position to be president. But that is not moving them into harris corner. They are Human Beings full of contradictions. We contain multitudes. So you can say i think Kamala Harris acts more president ial. And at the same time, say you know, i think that Donald Trump needs to shut his mouth and doesnt represent what i want to see in a president. And they do think that he would be more respected by world leaders. I think a lot of that has to do with the fact she is a woman. Some of the voters i spoke with were skeptical that the country would receive having a Feel President in a positive way. I dont know if that is true. There have been plenty of female Chief ExecutivesAround The World. They have gotten there first, but there is a big Question Mark over who she is and what she stands for still. Because remember, she has only been a candidate for two months. Usually by thiS Point, we know these people for two years. She hasnt had that luxury. I just feel like there are deeper breaks that im not sure more time would necessarily heal. This idea of masculinity and that democrats are antimale. It is very hard for a woman to argue that she iS Pro man given the fact she is trying to be the first Woman President in american history. I wonder if that on its own is enough to make it a Steep Cline for undecided who are mostly men. Young men. It is a good point and i think that is an illustration of how many differenT Factors are swimming around inside the heads of uncommitted, unhappily persuaded or unimpressed voters because that is really what we are talking about here. Voters unimpressed with each candidate. And this is often for them not a moral decision. That is a practical decision. Who is going to improve my life . Am i going to by electing thiS Person feel better about myself . Peel like my family is more secure . And they cast aside all of the things that we know very well and you and i have both reported on about trumps serious character flawsment. His abuse of power. The indictments. But it just doesnt have the same kind of moral weight. And they are going back and forth a little bit. They are say Harris Today doesnt mean harris tomorrow. So anyone looking at the polls wondering why the dial keeps shifting, that could be part of it. Jeremy peters, thank you for your time my friend. Thank you. We have some Breaking News this evening to bring you involving the mayor of americas largest city. This one. The New York Times is reporting tonight new York City mayor Eric Adams has been indicted on federal charges. Nbc news has not independently verified that report. And the times reports those charges remain sealed as of this evening. So we do not know what the charges are and what they include or not. Joining me now is lisa rubin. Lisa, if you could for people outside of new York City or even in new York City, could you put into perspective this. We are only aware of one indictment tonight. And so far, the New York Times is reporting that only mayor Eric Adams is the subject of that indictment. But as you noted the last several months have been swirling with rumors of multiple investigations. And people in his closest circle that include edward caban, Police Commissioner, the School Chancellor David banks who announced his intent to retire in december. It includes the Deputy Mayor who is also the chancellorS Partner. And multiple other City Hall aides, campaign aides, and people who are associated with those folks including brothers of the former Police Commissioner and of The School chancellor. There are multiple ongoing investigations. Our colleague had a Report Laster Night where he indicated there are five, six, or seven different investigations involving the mayor. That said, what we believe is the environment that will be unsealed tomorrow, concerns the first launched investigation. At least the one that was first made public. That is about mayor adams and Campaign Finance allegations. Allegations he was illegally funneling money through foreign governments through his campaign or accepting money directly. A number of folks associated with his Campaign Finance operation were also the subject of the investigation. They include some aides. One who has been on City Hall since. Can you talk about the degree to which federal investigators have been circling around the mayor himself . If you have been paying attention to new York City politics you know that hiS Phones were seized. This has been, we have been leading up to this moment. If T Fact the mayorS Phones were seized was an indication he was going to be at the center of this. Can you tell us a little more about the Time Line here, lisa . The mayorS Phones were seized several months ago. Whole there was silence about the mayor himself, they were closing in on people close to the mayor. Last saturday iS Probably where some of this hit its apex. Where his council resigned, saying she appreciated the opportunity to serve. But was resigning effective saturday evening. Most public officials and servants do not resign on a saturday night. Particularly people who had familiarity. Something must be very wrong for lisa to leave the administration at that moment. It was there after reported publicly one of the reasons was she had advised mayor adams a number of people serving in his administration should be separated from City Hall. They no longer should work there. And that mayor adams wouldnt take her advice. She wisely decided to step away from the administration, particularly as the signs grew noisier the feds were closing in on mayor adams himself. Just to put a little more meat on the bone here. You mentions five, six, seven investigations, Nbc News can report the mayor has been indicted. Federal charges coming out of the Southern District Of New York expected tomorrow. They have been investigating whether the mayor conspired with the Turkish Government and they have also sought information related to five other countries. We dont know if any of ha is in the actual indictment. But those are the countries of interest. So turkey, israel, china, qatar, south korea, and uzbekistan. Those of us who are a little confused about how one mayor would be able to be the mayor of one of the best cities in the world, but also the most craziest chaotic expansive metropolises dealing with up to seven federal investigations. What does that look like and what does this mean for his ability to govern . As of now, the mayor is in office. And the only person who can remove the mayor from office is the governor of the state of new york. So unless the mayor voluntarily resigns he would have to be removed by governor kathy hochul. If he were to resign voluntarily, the charter says someone becomes the mayor of the city of new york. That is only temporary. The public advocate is a man named Jumani Williams who served in the city council. Under the City Charter he would become mayor for around 60 days before a special election could be held. So that would really place the new York City government in more chaos than it is currently under. There is a big sense in the city now. I myself am a City Resident as are many of our colleagues. There is a sense of who is leading the city . Who is in control . The Deputy Mayor and former Police Commissioner and the interim current Police Commissioner are subject to federal investigation. Who has the time and attention to devote to governing this city . Msnbc legal correspondent, lisa rubin, thank you for your time and thoughts my friend. Joining me now is joyce vance, former u. S. Attorney and msnbc legal analyst. New York City mayor Eric Adams is expected to face federal charges by prosecutors out of the Southern District Of New York. And they could come as soon as tomorrow. Joyce, just your top Line Reaction to the fact the feds are charging potentially, reportedly the mayor of new York City. If that is in fact what happens, Eric Adams will become the first mayor in new York City history to be charged while in office. Your thoughts . So i think this looks like a classic federal public corruption investigation. The Justice Department has been in the business of indicting mayors who are involved in corruption. That doesnt come as a surprise to anyone. There have been a number of investigations here. Joyce, ill let you turn your phone off if you need to. It happens. Stop my alarm. It happens. Just in terms of, you were talking about a classic corruption investigation. We know the feds were interested in potential illegal foreign donations. We do not know if this is in the indictment. Included turkey, israel, china, qatar, and uzbekistan. There may be up to five, six, or seven different federal investigations, what is the Pecking Order of those investigations and how do you expect them to work in concert . So it iS Possible this is multiple branches of the same investigation. Prosecutors stumbled upon other crimes and began branching out the investigation. That wouldnt be at all unusual. Much of the early interest, some of the early indication we had involved these investigations about turkey, prosecutors have likely been to the grand jury, obtained and indictment that will be unsailed and we are learning more about the details once they unseal that indictment. Whether it is limited to the turkey investigation, are there others . Will it only involve the mayor or will there be multiple defendants in a conspiracy in this case . For folks who have not been following this closely, and that is totally understandable, the investigation has focused on him pressuring a turkish highrise. It looks at the 2022 World Cup in qatar with the mario attended. Information about the tickets he got to the World Cup. I mentioned this in my conversation with lisa rubin. Joyce, they seized the mayorS Phone, i say several phones. Maybe just phone singular. But what would you imagine they would want to get out of seizure of the mayorS Phone . A case like this . Right, so the forensic investigators who look at phones are very sophisticated and able to obtain data. Sometimes that the individual whose phone it is believes that they have deleted or cant be recovered. So it can be useful simply for recovering addresses and contacts and patterns of communications. If you have the appropriate probable cause, you can get the communications themselves. You might see searches on the phone. What is the individual whose phone he has been searching for. Phones are a gold mine. A real treasuretrove for investigators that can help you develop linkages between individuals and events and provide specific evidence. When you talk about, this is obviously very much a quickly moving weather front. But when you talk about the Mayors Ability to leave the city. How compromised will he be with basic management . Obviously, the answer is difficult. As a legal answer, people in our system of Criminal Justice are innocent until proven guilty. And frequently, we see situations like this where people who are under indictment remain in office. Particularly local leaders. The mayor of detroit waS Prosecuted by our colleague during the obama administration. In my district, we prosecuted members of the jefferson county committee. And in many situations those folks try to remain in office, to hold on as long aS Possible and it sets up a difficult situation. Particularly when they are charged with corruption, conflicts of interest between their own personal interests and the citizens they are supposed to serve. What can you tell us about these potentially looming federal indictment of the new York City mayor . Prosecutors in the Southern District Of New York. Passed along through his spokesperson. If i stood my ground, i would be a target and a target i became. If im charged i am innocent and i will fight this with every ounce of my strength and spirit. We have been reporting on this for some time. Investigations that branched off to a number of different places. The new York CityPolice Department being one of them. But this investigation may center around the approval of the housing, the building for the turkish consulate. What we have been told is that federal investigators have been looking into whether adams had pressured the Fire Chief to look into the possibility of getting some of the necessary Fire Approvals here in new York City. Completed on time. And so that has been a bit of a question if so, why did he pressure to get that building done in time . The specific nature of the charges, we are obviously working on it. No other News Organization is reporting the specific nature of the charges. But this long Term Investigation which led to the seizure of the mayorS Phones, an incredible moment when federal agents and you can imagine this, approached the mayor, flanked by his nypd Security Detail because of the threats he receives approached him, took his cell phone, we have seen the Cell Phones of a number of new York City staffers being taken of mayoral appointees. Some of them very high ranked within the city government. Taken by the fbi. There is a separate Police Investigation into the Police Department. That is being led by agents assigned to the u. S. Attorneys office to the Southern District Of New York. We will see where all this goes. And how it comes together and im a little bit hesitant to mention other names. Because of course, you dont have any indication yet of who or if anybody might be charged alongside the mayor. So we want to be careful of that. But there are people we have reported on that being subject or witness to this investigation. Tomorrow will be very interesting to see how this all develops.
