Matter. I think that's part of what is informing his calculus. That is all in. A special edition live from michigan starts right now. Good evening, you can probably tell that i am not in our usual new york city studio tonight. Instead we are coming to you live from lansing's midtown brewery the battleground state of michigan. This is one of the crucial states who will decide who the president is and both campaigns know it. Later this week, donald trump will be headed back to the detroit metro area just weeks since he held a rally. That bus just rolled into town this morning and we're going to have more on that later on this hour. Including an interview with one of the very important people riding on that bus. It is a critical time for the harris campaign in the state of michigan. Today a new usa today poll finds kamala harris narrowly leading donald trump in this state by 3 points which is well within that poll's margin of error. The poll also shows 4% of voters remain undecided with just 42 days left to election day. The battle is to come down to handful of votes and a handful of key places. One of those places is in the rust belt community of saginaw county. Saginaw is famous for how much of a bellwether it is. They declared saginaw the swing county that could decide this election. To put that into perspective. In 2016, donald trump won saginaw by 1%. About a thousand votes. Years later biden won by 303 votes out of 100,000 votes cast. Saginaw county makes up the most purple district in the country, quite literally. There are exactly 217 districts that are redder than michigan's eighth. And 217 districts that are bluer than michigan's eighth. So there are only a handful of places in this country where every individual vote matters as much as they do in saginaw county. Which is why i went down to saginaw this week to talk to a key constituent, in a key state that the presidential candidates are trying to court, union members. 21% of those votes were from union households. One in five. President biden made the union workers a part of his campaign. He was the first president to walk the picket line right here in the state of michigan. He elected judges who support union rights. And biden's chips and science act was a boom to union workers especially in states like michigan. Saginaw for example is an old uniontown as a direct result of the chips act. An vice president kamala harris was a focus that union workers remember on election day. She's hoping and not taking it for granted. The teamsters international union declined to endorse either candidate in the race. While also noting that nearly 60% of rank in file members supported donald trump. So to get a better sense of what is happening in this hotly, hotly contested state, among this critical group of voters we went right down to ground zero and talked to a group of nearly 60 members of ua local 85. Union group of plumbers, steam fitters and hvac technicians at their union hall in saginaw county. We talked about the upcoming election, how many of them remain undecided. And what might make them more decided. Even with so much of this election riding on their vote and two such diametrically to choose from they remain divide. Maybe not the kind you would expect. What you're about to hear is critical in understanding why this race remains so very close and why its outcome may not even be clear on election night. It is a fascinating complicated snapshot from the front lines of the 2024 election. Take a look. All right, so by a show of hands, how many of you are paying close attention to this election? okay, that's i'm going to say that's like half the audience. Is anybody undecided? okay. I'm undecided because i just haven't, i haven't seen enough of it yet. I need to play closer attention and do more independent research before i make my judgment. What have you caught of this campaign? have there been news stories about this candidate that have made its way to your information feed? not particularly. It's just how people kind of act around this time. It's a little crazy. So i try not to partake so much. I'm supporting kamala harris because i've seen four years. Actually i've seen nine years of donald trump. We need to move our country forward. I think kamala harris generation like that, younger than myself, needs to start moving this country forward. Donald trump is pulling us backward not moving us forward. That's why i support kamala harris. Young people, there's a lot of young people in this room. I see the policies of kamala harris that the infrastructure act that's put most of these people here back to work. For pretty much their entire career. At a good wage that they can support their family and own a home. And build generational wealth. President biden is the most proworking president we've ever had. The only president to be on a picket line and to support working families. Infrastructure bill, time after time we've seen him stand up for us. Do you feel like vice president harris is going to be as strong as he was? i do. Who here is voting for the first time? is this anybody's first election? you guys back here what's sort of made its way across your radar. Any stories or issues or positions? mostly just immigration. Can you talk a little bit more about that? what about immigration have you been paying attention to. There are thousands and thousands of illegal immigrants coming across the border every day. And the vice president has done minimal work to fix that. Based on what i've seen so i would like that to change. Do you feel like donald trump is going to be better on that issue. Based on what we've seen in his four years. Are you leaning for trump. At this time, i am. Is there anything she could do to change your mind? not unless she does something about immigration. Is this your first election. Yes, it is. Have you been paying attention. It's hard to tell what's true and false. What matters to you? issues concerning democracy and what was discussed about the border. What about immigration concerns you? the influx in illegal immigration is affecting a lot more than just the people. But our economy, we're losing jobs for the people who live here. People are you know running out of work and in return it's making life as a whole for the country harder. Do you feel like one candidate or the other is better on that issue? like i said, i don't know what to believe from what i'm seeing from multiple news outlets and what comes across my news food and what does not. I'm not super opinionated either way. How do you think you're going to ultimately decide. We spoke to one man that said i'm going to go with my heart on election day. As election day comes closer, i'll be more informed about how to decide. My union directs me with work and affects my pocketbook and my family. If the union doesn't endorse a candidate and you're left to decide on your own. First of all do you think you're going to vote? i'm definitely going to vote. How do you think you're going to ul ultimately decide that decision. I think i'm still going to be conflicted on the voter line. So literally a last minute call. Yes. Do you think it matters. It definitely matters. Do you guys talk about it? it's definitely a hot topic. And is there disagreement? oh yeah, oh yeah. We're going to go back to where republicans wanted to make our economy, service gig economy raát rather than a manufacturing committee. And i said do your research on that and vote for god's sake. People around the world that don't have an opportunity. Look around the country. We have the chips act. There's billions and billions of dollars most of those people in this room are benefiting from biden's chip deal. And they don't everyone know it yet. Do your research. Pull your head out of your. You saw that a number of veteran workers there were strong supporters of vice president kamala harris but you also saw that there were a large number of union workers particularly younger union workers who were undecided. Throughout our discussion it was clear that many of those understand decided voters saw immigration and the southern border as a major concern. They were also particularly motivated by concerns about the economy including inflation and the rising cost of house costs. Do you think the housing is an issue? yes, i actually just recently purchased a home. So yes i do think it is too high. It's just the cost of a livable move in ready home nowadays is just absurd. I think in my opinion. To where before i feel like you could buy a house for a reasonable price and not have to have a ton of work put into it. I just recently purchased a house as well. And this house has gone up $50,000 in the past five years. So, i mean just looking at the prices in the past five years, you know why has it gone up so much. What can we do to bring it back down to what it was. We're fortunate enough, our wages to be able to keep up with inflation but a lot of people haven't been so fortunate. And they've had to choose between paying bills, buying food, putting food on the table. So i think that's going to play a big factor in this election. Like he said if you can't afford to have a louse or buy your family food. Then nothing else really matters. So as much as these undecided voters are unsure about the candidates however, undefined their decision making process appears to be. You can see what issues are foremost in their minds in this critical swing county. But what is maybe just as interested as what was not on the minds of those undecided voters, issues that have received a ton of media attention in the state and in this election, issues like abortion access and donald trump's lawlessness covered exhaustively by the media. Those were not the kinds of things these undecided voters were focused on. Does anybody have any idea about what's happening in the federal courts relating to donald trump's the january 6th event and what's going on there with trump? i'm sorry to keep coming back to you. But. Like you haven't talk to me about your level of interest in the with the criminal charges and so forth. February 6th. January 6th. So i remember that day, i know he was the abstaining president. I'm not familiar with the charges that are being brought against him for that. I'm not following that charge. Or i know there's multiple court cases going on. That doesn't sound like it's going to be a factor in deciding to vote for him? no. Okay when i say january 6th, what do you think? i just remember seeing it on the news. Like all the riots and stuff. Don't really know what it was about or what happened though? did it, i mean how did it make you feel when you saw it? i don't know, i don't really feel any way about it. I mean, people showed their emotion i guess. Probably in the wrong way. But, it happened. Who here has been following the decisions from his supreme court. Raise your hands. Okay. I'm seeing like only a handful. Who here knows what the dobbs decision is? one person. Okay that's super interesting. What about abortion, is that an issue. I think it's a woman's right. Nobody should be able to dictate that at all. What do you think of trump's position on abortion. I think it's anti isn't he? yeah. He wants to control that. Yeah. I don't think he has any business even talking about that. What about abortion, reproductive choice. I think each side is a little too crazy. They need to meet in the middle. What do you mean by that. I think they go one too much one waeup and too much one way and the other is too much the other way. You think that. Something you think about? i don't know. I don't really have an opinion on it. I haven't looked into it or even thought about it really. It is a stunning reminder that stories the national media covers intensely. Stories which certainly matter to a considerable number of americans in general that those stories are not necessarily the deciding factors for these illusive undecided voters. Especially undecided voters who don't get their news from traditional media and who may not even be particularly interested in current events in general. For those voters what matters most is what may ultimately determine their vote this year are the conversations they have within their community. In this case, that means fellow members of their union. Of local 85, and especially those members who have made up their minds and who understand the stakes of the 2024 election. You asked what are the issues that are important. The one thing i said was honesty. And i think it really kind of ties together everything that people have been talking about here. You know, immigration, inflation, all of the issues that are there, they don't immediate anything unless you can believe the person that you're listening to. And, if you go back and i appreciate a lot of these people, it's really been eye opening. If you're going to do your research and you want to find out who you're going to trust, look at the person. Look at their character. And i think this is what i think is really ultimately needs to boil down for people who are undecided. If somebody has lied to you repeatedly, we are just, they were just mentioning covid. That was lie after lie if you remember watching those tv press things every day when we were stuck at home by ourselves. Continually, in the courts, continually lying. How many times does someone need to lie to you before you don't trust him? kamala harris is somebody who took an oath as a public servant, as a prosecutor, as a senator, who in my opinion has not lied to anybody. I think, vice president harris has a view of how democracy should work. The freedom for women to choose. The freedom for everyone here to be able to work where they want. To do what they want. I'm not going to lose my democracy over the price of a gallon of gas or the price of a loaf of bread. Democracy is too fragile and too important. Welcome back to our special coverage from the front lines of the 2024 battleground. Today we're coming to you live from the crucial state of michigan. Where we spoke to union workers a key voting block in this state about what they care about and just as importantly what they're just not paying all that much attention to. So, again my name is connor. But february 6th? january 6th. January 6th. So i remember that day. I know he was the abstaining president. I'm not familiar with the charges that are being brought against him for that. I don't, i'm not following that charge. Or, i know there's multiple court cases going on i'm not familiar with it. Do you think, that doesn't sound like it's going to be a factor in deciding who to vote for? no. If you're watching this show odds are you watch a lot of news. We thank you for it. Odds are you know quite a bit about january 6th and the litany of criminal cases brought against donald trump. But this election is likely to come down to just a few thousand voters with who keeping up with political news is not a priority. So how do you reach these voters who are frustratingly illusive and who might end up determining this entire election. Joining me now is mallory and john fabro former obama speech writer. Thank you for joining me tonight. Mallory, let me start with you first. I came away from this forum with the union voters thinking wow, what a huge job it is. Here are key voters who do not follow the news. They're not particularly engaged in politics and they might determine the election. I wonder what you can tell me in this electorate. The challenge that the harris team has in getting to these people in convincing them to go pull the lever for kamala harris. I think what you heard is people are working hard. They're concerned about the economy, getting a home and keeping a good union job. To me that points to something that i've been advocating for for the last couple of years, state legislature. It's not just the bench it's the foundation. Because we are the ones going door to door. We're the ones that will be out knocking on thousands of doors for people who may not watch the news as frequently as you and i do to talk about the fact that michigan democrats became the first state in 60 years to repeal right to work. You saw president biden on the line with so many of us on the line during the picket to say this is a team and we support kamala harris and here's why. John, it brought to the fore you know when you talk about political strategy. Like with there obviously a lot of money gets dumped into the ad wars. You know there's a lot of money spent on events and rallies. But it felt to me like in these conversations with these undecided union voters. That the convincing would have to be done at the grass roots level. That it would have to come naturally from the community and the trusted voices that these guys listen to. Who aren't necessarily campaign surrogates. And i wonder you know in your experience going out into the world and talking to young voters. What are the critical like delivery systems by which you convince people that the election matters. And that one candidate in particular is the one that they should be voting for. First of all, i'm so glad that you are doing this. And that you talked to folks and i hope everybody watching tunes in because that will decide the election. What those people end up doing is going to decide the election. Most people, most voters in the country aren't like us. They aren't political junkies. They're not watching msnbc, they're not listening to podcast save america. But they vote. I think what the harriswalz campaign is doing they set up an organization in the states, in the community. I think they realized television ads are great, events are too. But it's going to come down to door knocking. You're going to be likely to trust someone who you know. Who's either a colleague, friend or a family member. I think for a lot of these voters the contrast is going to come down to who's going to fight for them. When it comes to the economy. Kamala harris is giving a speech in pittsburgh tomorrow. She's going to weigh out her economic vision and i would expect her to also contrast that vision with donald trump because i think what these people want to know is, okay, forget what they might have done in the past. Forget everything that's been in the news who's going to fight for me. What is each candidate going to do for me. I think that the harris campaign is going to be doing that from every person in that organization including the thousands of volunteers they have. Yeah, you know to that end who's going to fight for me. Who's going to do the right thing for me. This is a group of union workers who are beneficiaries of the chip act. Yet there seems to be a real disconnect in terms how they feel about their job prospects and the economy and what joe biden has done specifically for them. Literally for them in the state of michigan in their own livelihoods. I would imagine therefor the people in the union who can explain the reality of what this democratic administration has done for these particular union workers are going to be the key to harris winning. Justin palmerville is one of the union elders at local 45. This is what he said to these union workers at the end of the union. Because i think this is actually how you win the votes. Let's take a listen. Thank you for spotlighting saginaw county. It's been a great deal. And one thing i did want to address, so this room knows. The science and chips act. They're not kidding. We have hemlock semi conductor, is making money directly out of the biden administration bill signed. That's something that we probably should have done a better job educating on. If you're fabbing at any of these fab shops that are sending stuff out that's case or phoenix or hse it's science and chips act money. That is kamala harris and joe biden. That's the ball game right. That's it. It is how do you connect. When we hear the chips and science act those of us who think about policy all the time. We know what that is. In almost the academic sense we know the dollars and what is it for. But for the people who are making the money you have to connect the dots. And the net gains from this legislation is going to be delayed. It takes time for the money to come to the states. It takes time for us in the state legislature to appropriate those dollars before the jobs actually start. Before the projects actually start. That is our job. S that going that is going to be the jobs of kamala harris and tim walz to explain. In 45 days. In 45 days. Their jobs are relatively secure. They have federal money flowing in to keep them in gainful livelihoods. Of course inflation and housing are a concern. But the way immigration animated a lot of the young men in the audience, i found to be stunning. I think we have time to play another clip of landon sharbino who is, you know one was of the many voices in the audience talking about migrants flowing through the border. Let's take a look at that clip again. What has made your radar? any stories, issues. Mostly just immigration. Can you talk a little bit more about that. What about immigration have you been paying attention to. There are thousands and thousands of illegal immigrants coming across the border every day and the vice president has done minimal work to fix that. Based on what i've seen. So i would like that to change. Do you feel like donald trump is going to be better on that issue. Based on what we've seen in his first four years i think he will be better. Are you leaning toward trump right now? yes, ma'am. John, you know, this seems to exist. The emotional poll on trump on these young white men seems to be something deeper than economics. I think the work of the potentially first lady you know the first female woman of color as president, its even harder for her to articulate you know the reassurance i think young male white workers need about a change in american demographic. How do you look at the poll that trump's immigration rhetoric has on a group of people who are not on the front lines of their jobs being replaced buy migrants. Trump and the entire republican party and the right wing media have concocted a story that we're being innovated by immigrants who are taking people's jobs right. That information filters down and becomes a powerful tphar narrative. I think what kamala harris has done. She talked about she's attorney general of state that prosecuted international gangs. And that would have passed a bill that would have solved it if donald trump wouldn't have killed it. I think talking about that and also talking about the fact that last time he was president his only big legislative accomplishment was a gigantic tax cut that went mostly for the rich. Now he wants to slap a trump tax that's going to cost most families $4,000 a year on every day goods that you buy in which she wants to do is make owning a home more affordable and give middle class tax cuts to about 100 million americans. I think she just has to tell that story and point out the game. What trump is trying to do. He doesn't really care about the issue of immigration, he's just using it for politics. And what she wants to do is fight for the american families like the union workers you talked to. Mallory i know you had talking about this. There was recent polling in michigan that shows almost 75% of michiganders want a path to citizenship. It is a very small amount of people that support mass deportation. This is an area where vice president harris should lean into her prosecutor credentials. Prosecute gangs and push back on the issues. Look at what's happening in springfield as if it is this mass horrible problem that does make these workers feel like their job is at risk when it's not. Yeah, it's a powerful and toxic genaphobia and let's hope they get to that in the next few days. Thank you for your time tonight. Can you talk a little bit about the sort of positive progressive reforms being put in place before the election. One they're voter driven. It was voters who voted in 22 to enact early voting in our state. And you see other states and they're more restrictive. Michigan has grown access. Out of cynicism because i've seen what donald trump has done when we have enfranchised voters in greater capacity. In and around covid. Are you at all worried that making it easier to vote is going to be something that comes under fire particularly from donald trump. If he loses the election in 2024. It shouldn't because making it easier to vote for all eligible citizens should be the priority of every leader in this country. Republican, independent or democrat. We're going to stay there and focus in making sure we see more voting turn out being high as a win regardless of who it benefits or who is actually participating at the end of the day that's what making democracy for vibrant. The interesting thing, yes we've been under intense scrutiny under the spotlight. At the same time with all those policies, our democracy is getting stronger. Young people are voting. We lead the nation in youth turn out in engagement. Michigan and michigan voters have responded squarely on the side of democracy and support leaders that make their point. Donald trump is making a late request of voters to vote early while saying that it's stupid that people get to vote 45 days early. And as we prepare for election week and not election night. Do you still think most of the early ballots are going to come from democrats or do you get a sense that it'll be more bipartisan. We're not seeing any imbalance at this point. Voting really just begins on thursday. But people are already requesting their ballots and we're seeing across the board, democrats, independents and republicans to vote early. Requesting their ballots now. A lot have not asked to. A lot may be waiting to vote on election day. We're not seeing any trends yet. It's too early to see any trends unlike 2020 when we saw an imbalance early on. A mayor candidate for the republican party was asking people not to vote early. Although it ended up doing something democrats took advantage of and voted in large numbers. He has a saying that it is stupid. The voters of michigan want it. Voters enacted into our constitution. So let's respect that and encourage everyone to use that option if it's the convenient one for them. That's been my focus and the focus of the election administrators all across the state. In 2020 we thought once we got through this high vote turn out election. To get through the audits and things would proceed peacefully. Then of course the exact opposite occurred. And so because of that we're ready for anything this time around we have a postelection plan to protect election workers. To protect the votes of the citizens of michigan. Today on a public radio show in neighboring wisconsin, kamala harris announced that if elected she would support ending the senate filibuster for specific legislation, in particular to protect abortion rights nationally. It is part of the campaign focus on reproductive freedom, which now includes a bus tour making at least 50 stops and hitting all seven battleground states. Today i got a chance to tag along on that campaign bus in michigan and i sat down with one of the vip passengers, hadley devol. You may remember her as a standout speaker at the convention after she shared her harrowing personal story about how she was raped and impregnated by her stepfather at age 12. I spoke to her about what she has seen and felt on the road and the challenge of reaching voters along the way. I wonder if you've seen the same level of energy and concern from young men as you have from young women as you've gone around the country. I've seen a lot of young men get involved when they have been affected. When they know their mother has a story. When they know their neighbor, their girlfriend, somebody who is close to their heartstrings, that is when they get involved and essentially that is when it is too late. That is what we try to tell people. Reproductive freedom will not be everyone's top issue. Especially in states like this. But states like michigan and all of the safe states, like we call them in kentucky, need to know that nobody will be safe if donald trump gets in office. We've seen what he has done. We can take his record and we know that reproductive freedom is not donald trump. The persuasive power of reproductive rights is not the only open question as election day approaches. Who here thinks kamala harris is going to win the election? who thinks donald trump is going to win the election? no one? interesting. Whether or not that sentiment is actually a good thing for the harriswalz campaign is very much up for debate. Joining me now is a state politics reporter for the detroit news and an indispensable resource in the state. Craig, i was surprised by the number of voters, some of whom were independent, undecided and going for trump. How many of them believe kamala harris is going to win and whether or not that is actually a good thing for the harris campaign. Expectation setting is important for getting people to the polls. I think it speaks to the success democrats have had in this state. They have one over and over again since 2016, when trump pulled a surprise and barely one against hillary clinton. I think democrats believe if it is a high turnout election, both sides have an incentive to go out. They are going to win because they believe there are more democrats in the state than republicans. That will be tested. That might not be set in stone and that is what the trump campaign is trying to upset. How much is the uncommitted vote going to matter in this election? the movement is saying it will not endorse harris, but is also urging supporters not to vote for trump or a thirdparty candidate. What does that mean? i think it means they are kicking it to the individual voters and it will be a battle to convince these voters. I don't think uncommitted itself will turn the election, but the trump campaigns angle is to try to get gains with a bunch of different groups. Trying to get gains with arab american voters. Trying to get small gains with african american voters. Trying to turnout republican leaning voters who had not voted before. 100,000 people voted uncommitted in the primary. The margin of victory for joe biden was 154,000. If trump can get a few thousand here and a few thousand there, he might have a path to breaking this precedent that has been set that democrats usually win. Is rfk going to foul things up given that thirdparty candidates could make a difference? it is so fascinating and i was just talking to the secretary about this over there. There are some signs that having rfk on the ballot might hurt kamala harris and rfk and trump are battling to get him taken off the ballot, which is a fascinating thing. Rfk is coming to michigan, doing a townhall. We will see what he has to say. This court cases playing out, but as you know in politics a lot of times people push for something.
