Day to election voting. Youre looking at a registered independent who is proud to vote again and again and again because im an american and that is what americans do. Early voting has already started in some states. The election is basically here. It is here. Candidates ask people to vote because that is the whole purpose of a campaign. Win more votes. And that is usually meant motivating people for Election Day which is why we hear so much about voting occurring on a single day. I like the part when you dont go to school on Election Day. The candidates an the voters cast their ballots. 81 Million voted four years ago, the population has grown since then and more than 81 Million ought to vote this time. Polls are open now. By tonight after the polls close, we will know who our 41st president will be. The emphasis there is on Election Day. But that framework is out of date. The most recent president ial election marks a shift that is still sinking in, 2020 was the first race where a majority of americans voted early by mail which means instead of Election Day, we are in Election Month. Really. Literally. And this is big implications for democracy and how we experience our Election Month. How the candidates campaign, how we interpret a much longer Voting Period and four states have been Early Voting and most people will have an option to vote early and by mail and in person and the policy of enabling Early Voting dates back to the mid 1800s. You could see soldiers lining up to cast ballots there before the 1864 midterms. The Library Of Congress has this illustration of the earlier vote from an illustration in harpers. So all the way back before women or minorities had voting rights, in the united states, Early Voting was already available for some. A way to ensure that soldiers could exercise theyre rights when they might have not been able to participate on Election Day. Absentee voting goes back a long way in our country. We first began Absentee Voting in the civil war. It was a Provision Put in place for military voters who were away from home, a significant force in the 1864 election. That option continues for soldiers overseas and established that votes could be cast early and safeguarded and counted on Election Day with all of the other votes. Now political junkies might remember how Soldiers Mail in votes became a Foot Note in the bush gore Election Battle back in 2000. A Bush Campaign Appeal to get those military ballots from overseas problems with the Post Mark problems included in the vote totals. Governor bush anxiously awaited i would wait until the ballots from military personnel. And it went out to something more. Because when a system works it often expands. In 2000, oregon was the first state all vote by mail. Today most states offer Mail Voting and that is by definition earlier than Election Day. You mail it in and as well as Early Voting in person. You could see the options on the map. American shifting from a day to what im calling Election Month, even if we havent updated the lingo. And let me show you. Across the 1900s, through 1992, ome 7 of people had Early Voting options. There you see it in 92. Over 90 still voted on Election Day. Then Early Voting rates doubled to around 16 and then All The Way Up by 2016 to over a third of voters doing so early. The last cycle became the majority for the first time. 64 of the 154 Million total votes came in early by mail. That shift had already begun as you see before 2020. But the Covid Lockdown supervised it. And while people had all kinds of reasons to vote in 2020, making it easier forever in history. The largest spike and now over half of voters still plan to vote early and that is without the covid factor this cycle. So, Election Month is one of the factors that may increase ongoing voter turnout. And while high participation could be just a neutral nonpartisan sign of healthy civic life, it is not that simple. Or at least that positive. I bet you already know this because youre watching the news. But in todays america, high turnout is not something that all politicians welcome equally. High turnout has driven democratic coalition, like the Harris Campaign sees high turnout as supersizing her odds of winning and more people fromv voted for the democrat in seven of the last eight races even when the Electorate College picked a different winner. A reminder that the nation tips blue and more blue when turnout is high. So now that it is Election Month, around the nation, democrats may have an edge if It Chooses turnout and the gop sees that as a problem. An this is a party that has already fought harder to limit or suppress voting with crackdowns starting with minorities and pushing hurdles that make it harder to vote from controversial Voter Ird requirems to purging of election polls and some republicans admit the goal of depressing turnout is what they want to do to help their odds in races they might otherwise loose. They even admit high levels of voting could mean republicans lose elections. They have things, levels of voting that if you ever agreed to it, you would never have a republican elected in this country again. Their bill would make Election Day a new paid holiday for government workers. A power grab. Smelling more and more like exactly what it is. That is what the antivoting agenda sounds like. And just to be clear, i give you the evidence but i also give you when necessary when warranted the obvious values or assessment along with it. This is not how healthy parties respond to Voter Feedback like the national elections ive shown you here. Healthy political parties try to develop Ideas Platforms and policies that respond to voters, dah, and might win voters back against results like this. They dont try to just distort or suppress who participates in elections. And that is key for understanding the Antidemocracy Extremism of todays republican party. It started long before trump. So it may outlast him. And i want to be clear, some of the efforts are legal. Meaning they dont break the law. Theyve used the law to elect hurdles or voter i. D. Requirements which might be unfair but the courts have upheld them. And republicans view those as a way to try to win elections they might otherwise lose if everyone participated. And that is the context for their concern about Election Week and Election Month and Early Voting. Donald trump had a sense in all of this would hurt him more than help him. He tried to trash Early Voting as a general matter openly admitting the reasoning, he wasnt saying this was a policy or thinking about whether soldiers would be able to vote or any of those high minded considerations i menged, no, he thought he would lose if anyone participated like i just played for you. And how the postal service would deliver the ballots by mail and by Funding And De cried Early Voting as somehow corrupt. Donald trump was think being sabotaging the early vote in general and that failed. And if it is become very common, well you know the saying, if you cant beat them, join them. Republicans have begun trying to override Donald Trumps attacks by urging party to catch up. I showed you j. D. Vance and others have said it as well. Pleading with the party to compete in new terrain. Because hundreds of millions people are now voting early, trashing it only in rightwing maga Super Red Circles is not going to level the Playing Field and exercising the right to early vote. So were hearing more from republicans in maga circles about banking ballots early because a lot of people vote in Election Month. We dont bank ballots early, but we didnt. But we didnt do it in 2020 because everybody said dont vote early, because that is corrupt. A lot of people did. You didnt. A lot of people did at the top of the republican party. Who could she be speaking about. Donald trump. Who played himself and this all boomeranged on him. Now that was a blunt Ex Change between the trump allies about what is become clear, the futility of attacking all Early Voting in Election Month in general. Trump himself has softened his stance, changing his tone as pbs Put It, trying to bank those votes as one of the only ways he has a chance to stay competitive with Kamala Harris. Higher turnout often helps democrats. But if most voting turns to the earlier options then Election Month becomes a norm and it may be less of a distinction between the parties, the New York times had a recent analysis for democrats, Biden Or Harris on that point in the summer. High turnout with few hurdles to voting ought to be a good thing for democracy, period. But that implies that we all are on the same page about living and supporting a democracy. And if you noticed, that aint everybody, any more. Republicans know high turnout is dangerous for them. Especially in national elections. As opposed to say local or hoff year. And they have this Maga Mentality that is pretty unwilling to change much of what theyre offering. It may seem like the party has doomed itself to all of these losses. And if we left it there, that is as far as we might go tonight. But then would you be skipping over the elephant in the room. When the republican party failed in these bids ive just mentioned, to distort who could vote or vote early and fails to score the electoral College Outcome that overrides the blue of most voters which actually happened twice. So two of the years were in the blue column, and we still had a republican president. When neither of those Tricks Ploys or legal or illegal work, then they turn to the criminal plots to steal the election, January 6 attempts to do that and we lived through it and republicans know it has been 20 years since voters cast more ballots for a republican for president than a democrat. So it is no surprise that the same candidate who lost and tried to steal last time is prepping the same playbook now. That is the elephant in the room. Weve been tracking the plots to steal the 2020 race. Have have been indicted and convicted one was protected by the Supreme Court. Republicans are ready and see this as a ripe battlefield for even more aggressive efforts this cycle. Theyve launched some of the efforts like the elector plots. It is always concerning when politicians who have been defeated at the Ballot Box Respond by trying to defeat democracy itself. So in my leading off with Gloom And Doom amidst these statistics about Early Voting . Not exactly. You have to be aware and vigilant. But trump failed last time and the many efforts to decrease people voting have failed as well. Partly because there is still a resilient majority in this country that backs democracy. And partly because of the larger shifts im documenting for you. More ways to vote, over more time, with more support for participation. At times like these were reminded of a truism. Politics is too important to be left to the politicians. Especially the ones who openly admit they would steal your vote permanently if they go the chance. So that is why this is an important time to take stock of the Election Month that were about to live through and we have two very special guests on this when were back in just 90 seconds. S. The Iran Contra Developments were a gift to Bill Clinton who has been struggling to counteract Bushs Attack on his credibility. 24 years ago, i was apprehended in Kennebunkport Maine for a dui. That is an accurate story. Were joined by Molly Jong fast and Joanna Coles, and chief Content Officer for the daily beast. Welcome to both of you. Molly, that shows how October Surprises assume that everyone is about to vote in a couple of weeks. Now the majority of people of 2020 was a precedent, will vote before a socalled Election Day. What do you think that does to this race and the antidemocratic sentiment that we also see on the right. This is such an interesting, it is funny as i was listen to your monologue and i didnt realize it was going to october surprise. I thought it was going somewhere else. But it is an important point and i hadnt thought about it which is that you will have so much voting already done before whatever it is, and again we dont know what that looks like and im sure weve seen foreign interference in our elections before with information. So it seeps possible that it could be that. It would be any number of things. But it is true. You could have a lot of the votes cast and that will definitely change the dynamic of the race. And joanna, Donald Trump has been all over this issue. He fought and lost the idea of just depressing voting. That is one of the things that we showed that republicans think would help them. Take a listen to how he sounds this week. Early voting begins in pennsylvania over the next two weeks. And we need each and every one of you to go out, just dont take anything for granted. Now we have this stupid stuff where you could vote 45 days early. I wonder what the hell happens during that 45 lets move these votes. We have about A Million votes, lets move them. He cant help himself. He knows it is in his political interest to get people voting early so it is not harris banking the big leads but then it devolved into his Conspiracy Theory that anything he loses it a fix. I think looking for logic from Donald Trump is perhaps not the right thing. But i would take issue with molly in terms of we dont know what the surprises are. Because we had a surprise this week with Mark Robinson in north carolina, the Lieutenant Governor running for governor now. If youve already voted in north carolina, you suddenly realize you got a different kind of candidate that even Donald Trump is removing himself from. Which is a pretty rare occurrence. Would you push back that what we learned about Mark Robinson was damning, it wasnt a much more than. I think trump removing his support from him making a difference and taking the money out t campaign. The republican governors removed their support. But Trump Trump has actually removed or back aed away. Hes quietly backed away but has not removes his endorsement. And he has backed away and so has Brian Kemp in georgia so it is feel like hes out on his own. J. D. Vance said i will let him defend himself. I guess the Policy Question is how early should it go and adding weeks gives more people participation. If you go out for months or forever, at some point even people who are in to participation for the reasons you are debating, it is too fluid and you have to have some window. But shift were seeing it increasing participation which republicans dont like. But i wonder if the shift is a permanent shift. I know you said it was in your intro, this i found really fascinating but by 2028 we will be voting on ourp laptops or cell phones. We buy everything else. We should be able to vote. And in many countries you can vote electronically or with digital. So this is only a matter of time. Well with that into mind. Lets look at our astronauts. They were sent out there and stuck out there. So we have nbc News Stranded Astronauts and imagine being a stranded astronaut, if you anxiety, and plan this vote from space and to joanns point, theyre going to do it online. Now technically it is a pdf with clickable boxes but the bottom line, joanna, they will not be using the u. S. Post office which doesnt operate anything out to space. What are they using an Elon Musk Technology . Are they using Star Link . Because hes going to bring them back, right. Because boeing cant bring them back. Well, we have to check on that. But my point of the pdf, It Ch is operating as a functional ballot is being transported through digital networks. So to your point it could very well be Star Link. The one thing that i would say one of the reasons why american elections are so safe is because theyre decentralized. That different tates have different systems and there is nothing to when Donald Trump talks about hacking, that is now how this works. So i do think that putting everything together like that would create some security issue. But there is no reason why each State Couldnt have their own digital facility around it. Or you could have different people providing different networks, right. We dont all use the same cell phone network. It just seems an inevitability that well be im sure by 2028 well be voting on our phones. It is fascinating that whether we consider one mechanism or the other more secure, but i do think it is broadly generational. In other word, people look at me funny when i read my newspaper in print and depending on their age go ahead. And im disagreeing and about the same age and reads the newspaper, i notice that the youngs dont totally get it. Why would you print out the internet and not have updating features. But the big shift again, we dont know. I take also Joanns Skepticism which ist Sounds So Good in the british accent. There is a reason why our siri voices are often british or australian. Because they sound so much well airu indict. Well ill take it. But with your journalistic skepticism included, we dont know, to your point, whether this will ebb and flow to a certain degree. Covid was a disruption. But the fact that amazon gives you everything in a distance and then we ask people to do something historically in person with a narrow window of time, and it has all of the discrimination and biasies and so the idea of making it easier is just common sense. Im going to fit in a break here. We thank you. Joanna comes back for something very special by The End of the hour. That is my tease for that. It goes right to the heart of who we are. So i want anyone watching tonight, republican, independent, democrat, to know that you are welcome here. Democratic governor from kentucky, Andy Beshear speaking at the dnc and joining us on set for your beat debut. It is great to see you in person. You have a lot going on and your busy and your party is busy. Lets start with at the dnc and what youre saying to democrats around the country because you have won in a very Red State. And that might be relevant to what harris is doing. Weve been hearing for last few weeks she wants to reach out to republicans to use some of the playbook that you have used. Well winning in red tates, the way we ought to win and it is about running and governing or where people wake up in the morning. When people wake up minute morning, theyre not think being the president ial race, theyre thinking about their job an next Doctor Appointments and for themselves or their kids or parents and the roads and bridges theyre going to drive that day and theyre thinking about public safety in Thur Kmien and the public schools theyre dropping her kids off at and when i viewed the Vice President plans, a middle Class Tax Cut and affordable housing they go right where people live and i think theyre going to be effective but it is also why i think that her administration is going to be effective once she step news the role of being president. That makes sense. Lets look at the headlines youre making. This is in kentucky. New york times, why kentucky became the only Red State to expand voting rights. That is you. And commanding access to Health Care. Washington post, one of americas post popular politicians is a democrat in kentucky. We didnt write these because you came. You could keep reading. I like being a nice host. To win someone over. But those are actual headlines and then another Health Care head, Andy Bashear banned Conversion Therapy socalled for Lgbtq minors. The question is, two parts. One, what are you doing on Health Care which is a issue in america, that has a Swiss Cheese checkered Health Care system, you Cant Fix it all one state or nationally but youve been working on that expanding access, and then two, how is that working in states that weve been told, they dont want the government to do anything which is clearly untrue. Well on Health Care, it is about access and affordability. Everybody should be able to see their doctor in their own community. No one should have to drive two hours or take two buses to get to their hospital or clinic. So in kentucky, were doing everything from building the in 150 years. Its doors will open at the beginning of november. Weve opened Twotric Autism Clinics in Ach Latcha where people have had drive a couple of hours to lexington. A parent should never be told the best thing they could do for Think Kid is move and that hurts and so first is commanding access and making sure we have a clinic in every county and then region and then it is affordable. It is our steps to cap the cost of insulin and what the Bidenharris Administration is doing through medicare, making sure when people need a doctor, they could see a doctor. It is not rocket science. And when youre sick, you want to get better and we want to make sure you could get better and that makes you more product and helps our Economy Move and just the right thing to do. And people respond to that. When you govern well, people want you to continue governing. And i think it is about showing up, it is about getting results and it is about talking to people and not at them. And then it is about showing that you care. And for me, it is about talking about my why. Most of the time somebody in my position doesnt say they do say this is what im for or against but they dont give you their why. For me it is a lot to did do with faith. When i signed the ban on Conversion Therapy, i believe every child is a child of god and those children deserve protection and Conversion Therapy raises the rate of Suicide Attempts doubled. That is two times. Those are incredible kids and i want them to know that theyre governor sees them and cares about them and believes that they are the wonderful Children Of God they are. Governor bashear, your first time here, really happy to do it in person. I hope youll come back. Thank you, ill be back. Yes. But youll read more headlines. That is a Down Payment and then we just do more and more. Good to see you. Ill tell you what is coming up. Com hire Kamala Harris making news on a big Issue Today saying if elected she would return the senate to Majority Rule on votes involving womens rights and abortion. Currently republicans have used Obstruction Tactics like the filibuster to stop any up or down votes. Harris would halt that so the senate could cement Abortion Rights into law if it has the votes. Since Guts Roe and these crackdowns have been applied into 24 states, hes launched meandering defenses that are worth hearing at least in order to try to decipher them. Here is was last night in a pennsylvania rally. You will no longer have anxiety from all of the problems our country has today. You will be protected and i will be your protector. Women will be happy, healthy, confident and free. You will no longer be thinking abortion. That is all they talk about. Abortion. Trump didnt explain why if elected you as he Put It, would no longer be thinking about that issue. It is true that his Supreme Court appointees ended roe and that is why states have restored the power to ban abortion at the state level. Before trump they didnt have the pow legally, and now they do. Elections matters. It is not true that it always had to be that way. Which you heard him just say. It is the opposite. Women voters are clearly away trump is hemorrhaging support. And the top runner in ohio is attacking womens right as a single issue obsessive. There is a lot of people [ inaudible ]. That is a candidate who apparently thinks it is their job to evaluate the voters. It is the other way around and more women are evaluating republicans like that official there poorly. Many now say abortion is their top issue including a majority of women under 45 and trump is also Trucking Project 2025 which is down right you could see just 4 of people have a favorable view of it among voters. That makes it one of the most reviled things in the history of polling. The Projects Abortion Stance largely mirrors the current republican platform. So, is this a war on womens rights . Is it a full blown war on women themselves . And who should we listen to for some context here . A challenge for you next time. I challenge you issued. I have no comment. But we came together here because i asked the set up, which is who are we listening to. Is it a war on womens rights, on women, on people . And so i want to go to you first, sofia as our returns fall back champion, what is on your list. All of this is on us. Whether youre a woman or a gender expansive Person Or Anyone who needs rights in this country, i would say my fall back List Today has changed because just this morning i read the coverage about how we have had two more than 200 prosecutions after Pregnancy Losses since the fall of rov and i would love to stop that. Joanna, it is something that we used to talk about as dystopian, and a warning, it is here. But it is like a Hands Maid Tale come to light. And a majority of people who have abortions are mothers who understand the enormous Effort And Energy and frankly money it takes to raise a family in america. So, actually, this is a war on families, it is a war on women, and children who are around and it is also a war on men because men dont always want to have children either. I hate to break it to america, but i see people dont understand and it may be different in australia, that it is way different. But men are also responsible for having children. Not literally, of course, but their financially responsible and we should give people the option to have children when they want. Because it is the single biggest economic decision they will ever make. Hannah, i have some of your comedy to play or do you want to get in on that conversation . Look, i dont want to talk about it i dont under what is happening here in america. You got it right for a while. Something has happened and i dont want to guess. Something has definitely happened. That is fair. This is a lot. Well were not afraid of the outside. We dont make arent you. Some americans. Not the royal we, but wee at this table. We have two people who are not from the united states at the table and i feel fine about it. Wellm an american citizen and i became an american citizen on purpose because i love this country and im proud to live here. But youre right, something has happened and it is something that has a very orange face, i think. Oh, i think and im proud of here, but youre right. Something has happened and its something that has a very orange face, i think. I think i know what youre talking about. Maybe. Hannah, since youre making your beat debut, were going to play a little more i dont want to Put It in a box, but political comedy and themes we can explore. People feel safer when men do the angry comedy. When i do it, im just a miserable lesbian ruining all the fun and the banter. When men do it, heroes of free speech. The pride flag, i love what it means. That is perfect, pride. Wonderful. But the flag itself, a bit busy. Its just six very shouty assertive colors stacked on top of each other. No rest for the eye. You want people to laugh. You hope they agree with you. Does it matter . Look, i just im very good at making a room full of people agree with me, but once its out in the ether, thats another story. Like, i think its really an interesting time to be in comedy because were no longer in the Room And Context is lost, so in my new show, i say a lot of things that potentially will get me canceled. But you know, thats the world we live in. I dont think you can get canceled anymore, like, i think its over, the canceling thing. That moment you think is past . Everyone has a platform now, were fine. Or not. But yeah, i am very confused by, like, how culture goes out into the world and how like the silos, its hard to have references that everybody understands. You know, i have a Cabbage Patch Kid joke, and thats thats not appealing to the younger generation. I cant wait to come and see your show. I loved your first netflix special. I cant wait to see your new show. Right. Two in between. You will do by the time i see it. You dont need to do research. Ill bring you up to speed. When you talk about a reference working, youre still fundamentally doing live comedy, i guess the difference is these specials which is how many people know you, youre taking the experience in the Room And Broadcasting it. Yeah, and thats its sort of confused me a lot because when i write material, i used to just talk to people i knew that were going to come to the rooms that i was in. You can sort of understand who youre talking to, but when youre preparing a show now, i have fans in brazil and india, and im like, i just dont know what to say anymore. So im i now do mime. I dont. That was a little joke. That would be great, though. I forgot i was on a news program. Theyre like, were going to take this in. The Mime Joke it appeals to everyone, except nobody. Thats funny. I dont know. I have a Soft Spot for mime comedy. Go ahead, sophia. I imagine its an incredible amount of pressure. Like you said, youre not just having a conversation with people in the room. You have to wonder if things are going to track globally. And its sort of the inverse of the great thing about all this connectivity, because we can talk about issues in our countries. We can align, you know, with women and folks in search of civil rights, in search of full humanity around the world. We can see, you know, countries like ireland, where other women are fighting for their Abortion Rights, for their freedom to make their own choices for their bodies. And those women can learn about what were dealing with here. These women who are being prosecuted after pregnancy loss. Women who are being killed because theyre being denied the treatment they need in hospitals until they go into sepsis. These are horrific things, and in one sense, im glad we can have a global conversation. And on the other, when wonderfully smart people like you have to tell jokes in these moments to the world, i dont envy you at all. I dont make jokes about that. Not that. Obviously. Just fyi. Having me on for a good time. I sort of Steer Clear Of well, i touch on it a little bit, but consensually. Sorry. It is jokes, but you always have to have a Point Of View with jokes. Its one thing to sort of Give A Line and be controversial for Controversys Sake because it does only have an Attention Economy and people just head toward negative. And i find that a very difficult space to sort of break through without i have 30 seconds left now for you. Well, i was going to ask if you find yourself self censoring, but what i want to do is use this opportunity to invite you both on my new podcast with samantha bee, and you can Come On too, and we can reprise this conversation. It sounds like selfcensoring is all around. Look, i dont think i want to say yes to anything live on air. Yet here you are. I think you should just do it. Just do it. What a great place to say that. Right . Now im running out of time. Are you meta . Do you like meta jokes . As in zooming out or yeah, youre making fun of the thing because go ahead. No, i only do meta. Sometimes i zoom out way too far. You know, and then we all become ants and were not doing very well. But its a funny show. I need people to know that. Im having an existential crisis and that is what makes me accessible. Thats who cant relate to that . I am in everybodys vendiagram. I feel different than usual at The End of a segment. Thats a good thing. I didnt fall back. The bad stuff maybe fell back. I want to thank our panel. Well be right back. K. Meet the jennifers.
