Getting up Way Too Early with us on this tuesday morning. Morning joe starts right now. Hes not very funny. That guy. Those three guys, theyre being blown away by gutfeld. It was like 2015, thinking about running. I was going to run. I went on his show, right . He goes the tonight show, which is dying. Where is Johnny Carson . Bring back johnny. It made you appreciate, right, uncle sam, made you appreciate the greatness of Johnny Carson and these guys. These three guys, theyre so bad, all three of them. All right. Where is Johnny Carson . Bring back johnny. Im a big fan of johnny. Very good. That was donald at a rally yesterday. In pennsylvania. Wondering why, willie, they wont bring back Johnny Carson. Its always a terrible thing when you meet somebody and say, your parents must be proud of you. Then you go, yeah, they passed away 15 years ago. Johnny carson, a great man, a great comedian. Im telling you, and i knew it in real time, like, i was like, we get to see this guy every night . Hes just the greatest. Sadly, hes no longer with us. Could you pass that along to maralago, willie . Yeah. I read that as a, where have you gone, joe demaggio, a longing for the past, perhaps, maybe not literal. Oh, a longing, not literal. Three guys at the center of late night right now would tell you the same thing, that Johnny Carson was the greatest. The best. Absolutely. More of a, where have you gone, joe demaggio. Definitely. Lonely eyes turned toward you. Yes. We have the host of Way Too Early, white House Bureau Chief at politico, jonathan lemire. Where have you gone . Right here. Eugene robinson of the Washington Post. And Staff Writer at The Atlantic, Tom Nichols. I dont want to give false hope, jonathan lemire, to the good people of New England. Please dont. Dont go it. Youre ruining it. Here come the Red Sox. Youre ruining it. Here come the Red Sox. Are we. 500 yet. One game over. 500, joe. Dream the impossible dream. Dream the impossible dream. Okay. Its all very exciting. The Red Sox have won a few in a row, managed to win yesterday. They have taken the moment when theyre on the brink of mathematical elimination to play their best ball. There it is. Good times. They are still 3 1 2 out of the Wild Card with five to play. An uphill climb to say the least. Didnt johnson say, nothing focuses the mind more than a Wild Card elimination at dawn, willie . Yes, exactly it. By The Way, philly coined their division. Yankees Magic Number for the division is one. I know youre excited. Mets braves series starting tonight. Lets go, mets okay. This is going to be an exciting series. Im serious. Mets and the braves a couple years ago, you know, the braves sweep the mets near The End of the season. Break Phil Griffin and the rest of mets nations hearts. Well see what happens now. Heres the standings. The mets and the braves battling, starting a threegame series. Nobody knows whats going to happen. Nobody knows whats going to happen in football, willie, because its just been crazy, man. Like, i still cant wrap my arms around the fact that Joe Burrow is 03. Last night, by The Way, Mac Jones, 5 for 8. Came into Cleanup Duty. Always find the most important angles to the story. In the game that Joe Burrow lost, a coming out party for another Lsu Superstar, Heisman Trophy WinnerJayden Daniels. Amazing. The rookie in the third game of his career, he was awesome Last Night. John, dare commanders fans in washingtOn And virginia, maryland, Have Hope, because this Team Looks like theyre playing really well. He was great Last Night. He throws a pretty deep ball. Yeah, i mean, the Washington Football Franchise and their fans have not had much to cheer about for decades now, as im sure Eugene Robinson can chime in in a moment, but they may have the future. I have a lot of commanders fans in my life who are nervous because Robert Griffin iii also with a supernova for a season, Got Hurt, and never came back. Daniels has a slight build. Look at that throw. Man, hes off to a spectacular start. Bengals 03. Jaguars blown out, 03. Theres hope now in the nations capital. Certainly is. Gene robinson, we took note last week, maybe a couple weeks ago now, they all blur together, but when Jayden Daniels walked on The Field, the first play, we took note how different he was from the Bears Rookie Quarterback and other rookie quarterbacks. Yeah. Like caleb williams. When Jayden Daniels walked on The Field, first play, he looked like he owned the place. Yeah. Thats what you want to see in a young quarterback. Absolutely. Last night, he was just spectacular. I mean, the final score was 3833. The game was not that close. The commanders just killed the a team that thought it was going to the Super Bowl, that has burrow and a ton of talent. The commanders just outplayed them in every phase of the game. Jayden daniels was spectacular. You could see during first quarter, there was a point at which hes like, oh, ive figured this out. You know, i figured out pro football like i figured out college football. Yeah. Then it was like, i can run. I can throw. I can do whatever i want to do. It was amazing. You know, i hope he bulks up a little bit. Hes kind of skinny. Were a little worried about that, but, boy, this is exciting. Yeah, no, he can run. He can throw. And if youre a washington fan, you want him to throw and not run. Exactly. If you run, get to the sidelines faster than everybody else. By The Way, mika, next hour, we are going to actually pick apart the five completions that Mac Jones threw Last Night in Cleanup Duty in the Bills Game against jacksonville. Yes, their Bumper Stickers across jacksonville and up and down the Eastern Seaboard say just that, mac is back. Here comes Mac Jones. Hell have a Super Bowl trophy. Youve allotted more than enough time to waste, and well now get to the news. Okay. We picked apart the false narrative emerging from prominent voices, that Donald Trump might be unfit for office, but they Cant Yet Vote for Vice President harris because she hasnt given enough details about her policy. Well, i mean, you listen to Donald Trump on the policy. And you know you should youre going, is this lincoln . Right. Like, is this a philosopher, a bit of aristotle in there. Keep that in mind while listening to some of what trump had to say at his rally Last Night in pennsylvania. Vladimir wanted it badly. That was the apple of his eye. Ukraine was the apple of his eye. I said, dont do it. He would have never gone in, would have never happened. All these things would have never happened. But ukraine now, zelenskyy is here. I think zelenskyy is the greatest salesman in history. Every time he comes in the country, he walks away with 60 billion, billion. Walks into a 60 billion. He wants them to win this election so badly. AS President elect, if i win the election, the first thing ill do is call up zelenskyy and call up President Putin, and im going to say, ya got to make a deal. This is crazy. What a horrible thing thats happened. Just because and its our fault because its a war that should have never been allowed to happen. We didnt have one Terror Attack during my administration. With all the Terror Attacks all over the world. We didnt have countries fighting each other. They wouldnt have done it without my permission. They would have called me up to ask whether or not they could go to war with some other country. I said, you cant do that. If you do that, ill put big, big taxes all over your okay, we wont do it. Call me up the next day, we decided not to go to war. We had no wars. These guys actually want these people in our country. Its not even believable. Working with leftwing nonprofits to inundate pennsylvania communities, changing the character of small towns and villages all over our country, and changing them forever. They will never be the same. They will never be. Do you think springfield will ever be the same . I dont think so. The fact is, and ill say it now, you have to get them the hell out. You have to get them out. Im sorry. [ applause ] get them out. Cant have it. Cant have it. Theyve destroyed it. [ Crowd Chanting ] its terrible to say, tough thing to do. The damage that Sleepily Joe you know, im tending to call him sleepy joe lately. I called him crooked joe, but, like, who is our president . We dont even have do we have a president . Why doesnt he leave . Why doesnt he leave . Think of it. Think of it. I call him crooked joe. That was very effective. It got him out of the race. I mean, we had a debate. He didnt do too well in that debate. They came to him and said, youre down 21 points, and youre going to lose. This can only happen to me. I end up with somebody new. Heres the thing, all i have to do is expose her for what she is. Shes a communist, okay . Shes a communist. And this country is not ready for a communist. Hopefully never will be. Because that doesnt work. And remember this, and i just say this, if you look at Ukraine And Russia but, you know, they say russia, i stopped the russian pipeline, scored Nord Stream 2. No one had heard of it before i came along. I stopped the biggest economic Development Job, the biggest Job Theyve ever done. I stopped it. When biden came in, he let them build but killed our Keystone Pipeline, which we needed. He killed keystone. [ Crowd Booing ] remember this about russia, under bush, they took a lot. Under Biden And BarackHussein Obama has anyone ever heard of him . Barack hussein, a lot of people say he is actually running the country right now. I dont think so. I dont think so. But some people say he is running our country. I dont think it is biden. Under Barack Hussein Obama, they took a lot, right . Under biden, theyre taking everything. In that, what i guess hed call the weave, there were so many disgusting, hateful things in there, its hard to keep up. Were focused on Foreign Policy, but his comments about springfield, yeah, springfield has never been the same since donald Trump And Jd vance and their violent rhetoric has wreaked chaos, havoc, fear, and upended the lives of countlesS People in that town. Ohios Republican Governor wrote an oped, asking donald Trump And Jd vance to stop explaining the damage they have done to springfield and speaking up for the legal haitian immigrants who live In Springfield, who add to the economy, who add to the society, who are good people. It was very, very clear what is going on In Springfield is at the hands of donald Trump And Jd vance and that violent rhetoric. By The Way, speaking of violent and lies, complete lies. Rhetoric, i mean, shes a communist. We can never have a communist running this country. Yeah, the communist that iS Proposing 50,000 Tax Breaks for a firsttime Small Business owner. The communist thatS Proposing 25,000 Tax Cuts, Tax Incentives for firsttime homebuyers. The communist who iS Putting together Tax Incentives, private incentives to help spur 3 Million new homes for construction over the next four years. Doesnt sound like a communist to me. You know why . Because its not a communist. But it is interesting. Wall Street JournalEditorial Page, i talked about a column or two that i read over the weekend. You did, too. Very disgusting columns. Wall Street JournalEditorial Page, again, very responsible on Donald Trumps lies, the big lie. Has been very responsible talking about the lunacy that has taken over the Republican Party many times. It really has. This morning, at The End, said seems like could be triggered into murder after the debates. The end of Days Rhetoric against political opponents and the consequences of losing a president ial election. Of course, Donald Trump said its all the democrats fault. Henninger said it is all the democrats fault. Immediately thereafter, Donald Trump started talking about because he is when he was attacking democratic rhetoric. In the same truth social post he says, because of this communist left rhetoric, the bullets are flying and it will only get worse. He always accuses the left. He always accuses Kamala Harris, who now is being attacked for actually being in the center, of being communist. Willie, really quickly, we were going over the false equivalency of people saying, oh, well, you know, Donald Trump, he may be bad, but at least we know where he stands on policy. We dont know where kamala stands. However, we do know where she stands on a hell of a lot of policies. Here is where Donald Trump stands on policy. For people who say, we know where he stands, so were going to vote for him. Zelenskyy, for Donald Trump, is the bad guy. Putin, a victim. Yup. Vladimir putin invades ukraine. Who does Donald Trump say is at fault . The united states of america. He blames the city brightly shining on The Hill for all the world to see. The city that haS Pushed back russian aggression now since 1945. The country that has liberated much of Eastern Europe and is now trying to help liberate ukraine. Donald trump blames america. He doesnt blame Vladimir Putin. He never has. So for all these people that want to vote for him, are desperately seeking Permission Structure to vote for him, you will be voting for a man who says america is at blame for Vladimir Putin invaing ukraine. We made him do it. Go down the list. By The Way, sounds a lot like a certain historian who has been in the news lately and promoted, who said that World War ii, Hitler Wasnt the villain. Churchill was the bad guy. Hitler and the holocaust, well, thiS Person says, it was just poor logistics. They ended up deciding it was actually more humane to kill 6 Million jews than to let them slowly starve. Donald trump talks about mass deportation. The villages that had been changed. You think theyre coming to the villages of west virginia. Crowd chanting send them back. The antithesis. If there are any conservatives left out there who actually remember Ronald Reagan, reagan in his Farewell Speech talked about what Small Business OwnersIn Springfield are talking about. How immigrants revive economies. How immigrants make america forever young. Ronald reagan said it. His Farewell Speech. Donald trump in this speech is talking, and the crowd is chanting, i think, send them back, send them back. Then he is talking about massive tariffs. He is going to end wars by slapping massive tariffs on products that will destroy Americas Economy. If not destroy Americas Economy, let me restate that, Itll CrushWorking Class Americans and Middle Class americans. Then he brings up the debate against Joe Biden, but for some reason, doesnt bring up the debate against Kamala Harris. Doesnt bring up the fact that he dodged yet again her request, her demand for a second debate. He keeps dodging it, willie. Why . Theyre dodging the issues. Theres a flattening. Donald trump will say it, and then thereS People, well get to Tom Nichols on this, people going, yeah, but what does Kamala Harris really think about Quantitative Easing . Yes, i understand shes going to talk about 50,000 Tax Breaks for firsttime Small Business Owners and entrepreneurs and Family Businesses and people starting businesses on main street u. S. A. , but what are the longterm Tax Ramifications about that . Well, Donald Trump just goes on stage, grunts, and says nonsensical things. On the policy about some of the people youre talking about, the wealthy republicans, wealthy independents, a lot of those guys weve seen out in Silicon Valley who have said, well, i have to go with Donald Trump here, you laid it out. Are you for tariffs . Are you for recordbreaking debt . Is the dow closing too high . It closed again high after the September Rally, you have the rate cuts. All things are happening with the economy. ThereS Policy on The Other Side if you want to look it it. Perhaps theyre looking at those for cover, for some other reason they dont want to vote for Kamala Harris. Tom nichols, you wrote Policy Isnt going to win this election. You write, one of the myths of american policies is detailed Policy Positions are crucial to winning elections. Yes, policy matters in broad strokes. Candidates take general positions on issues such as taxes, abortions, and Foreign Policy. Rather than study white papers or ponder reports from thinktank, however, most voters count on parties and candidates to signal broad directions and work out the details later. In the 2024 election, Policy Details matter even less than they usually do. Vice president Kamala Harris and her Running Mate, minnesota governor Tim Walz, seem to have figured this out. Policy proposals are supposed to differentiate the candidates, but drawing Policy Distinctions With Trump is hard when he presents almost nothing beyond, i will fix it. Thats all he says, Tom Nichols. This stuff never would have happened if i had been there. Im going to fix everything when i get there. I alone can fix it, he famously said. There are legitimate questions weve asked many, many times on this show about Kamala Harris current positions versus where she was in 2019, 2020. Shes attempted to answer some of those, including at the debate. But im reminded of our conversation last week with Hillary Clinton when we asked her for advice for Kamala Harris. She said, if people want to know in the Weeds Policy details, go to the website. Your job as a candidate, a lesson she said she learned in 2016, is to tell a story about where you want to take the country. Right. Two things to remember. One is that for trumps own people, for the Republican Party and for the trump faithful, trump can say anything he wants. It doesnt matter. Hes not held to any kind of account about policy. I mean, those clips that we just watched, trump could stand there and say, you know, Lake Michigan is actually full of asparagus. A lot of people dont know that. You know, you have all these people behind Him Nodding, going, yeah, thats a great point. You know, it doesnt matter whether its true or false or completely insane. His side, hiS People, his base and the gop, theyre never going to hold him to any specifics. We know that, you know, too often, when hes reported on, you know, theres kind of a collective shrug, saying, well, Donald Trump had another crazy rally Last Night and said a lot of bonkers things. Meanwhile, you know, they turn to the democratic nominee and say, as Bret Stephens did, well, i need to know what regulations will be rolled back aS Part of housing policy. First of all, No One wins elections on that. We had examples of that. Mike dukakis, you know, was the candidate that people should have realized after that, you know, when he stood there and is talking about every detail and how, you know, hed done through every line of the budget. You dont win elections on that. You win elections on ideas. You win elections on empathy, on big directions. Some of this is laying a trap, especially from people who really dont they just want a Permission Structure not to vote for Kamala Harris. Exactly. They see themselves aS Part of the tribe and are thinking about what happens after the election. You know, i think thats remarkable, given that if shes good enough for Dick Cheney, she should probably be good enough for most conservatives. But there is this really kind of intensive effort to say, i would vote for her but, boy, the infrastructure, the things she said about infrastructure three months ago really got under my skin. Im not sure if its her or the guy who thinks that legal immigrants should be deported. Right. Of course, for so many, the Permission Structure is because they dont want to acknowledge they dont want to vote for her because shes a Woman Or Person of color. Eugene, weve heard complaints the Vice President needs to say more about her policy. Maybe in a few spaces she does, but thats not what this election is really about. It is this contrasting vision. This Dystopian View of america put forth by Donald Trump and his nonsensical efforts to say hell fix it versus more of a happy, optimistic view put forth by the Vice President. If you were counseling her, knowing thiS Phenomenon which tom and joe laid out so well, how should she approach this . Keep doing what shes doing. Lets step back for a second. Shes only been the candidate for, what, maybe a couple months . Its extraordinary how well she has done, how she has expanded the electoral map. Shes raised more money than king midas. You know, she has done quite spectacularly well as a candidate, from zero to A Hundred in virtually no time. I think she must be doing something right. If i were counseling her, i would say, no, dont try to give speeches to your Rally Crowds or to Bret Stephens or to anybody about the details in the weeds of your housing policy. Continue to talk about Hope And Joy and your vision for the future. Continue to talk about turning the page. Give the outlines of how youre going to do that. You know, i think look, i think shes doing well. You know, Tom Nichols, i have to go back to you because you said something fascinating. You know, when you look at the fact that Dick Cheney, Liz Cheney, alberto gonzales, score of National Security officials that worked for reagan, that worked for the first bush, that worked for the second bush, all Line Up and are all supporting Kamala Harris. You keep going down the list, especially of the republicans that worked for Donald Trump, who will be supporting Kamala Harris. This is not really that hard. For those that are desperately seeking Permission Structure to vote for Kamala Harris, theyre not going to really get it. Thats the thing. Theyre whistling past a graveyard when they are trying to claim the conservative vote is for the man that exploded the deficit and the debt more than anybody else before him in american history over four years. Not even theres not a close second as far as Deficit And Debt growth under Donald Trump. Pushing tariffs, a massive tax on working class and Middle Class americans. Tariffs is his answer to everything. These people say, oh, we want the details of Kamala Harris policy and where she stands on Quantitative Easing, you know, after this, that, or the other. To Bret Stephens, you know nothing about kamala . Thats not true. Todd purdam. People i like very much, but theyre claiming Kamala Harris is an empty suit and gives them permission to vote for Donald Trump. Massive tariffs. The most antireagan Immigration Policy of any major candidate since reagan gave his Farewell Speech in january of 1989. Then lets look at ukraine. Donald trump will not blame Vladimir Putin for invading ukraine. He called it brilliant at the time. Called it brilliant. Now, he is blaming the united states of america for making putin do it. Where in the world do these people think theyre ever going to come up with an excuse, a Thread Theyll Pull that will lead to conservatism . Its not there, is it, tom . Especially when you start with Foreign Policy. We can argue about, you know, tariffs. Republicans, there have always been differences among republicans about trade, tariffs, protectionism. But to start from, ill basically destroy nato. Ill tell Vladimir Putin, do whatever the hell you want. His Foreign Policy positions alone should have been enough to alienate him from any conservative, any republican. Those same people who say, but i dont know what Kamala Harris is going to do, Kamala Harris has made it very clear. Shes in it to keep nato together and to help ukraine win this war. And to survive this russian aggression. Im pretty clear on what a Kamala Harris administration is going to look like. Unfortunately, im pretty clear on what another Trump Administration is going to look like. I think a lot of these folks, i think theyre stuck in the belief that this is a normal electiOn And that, down the line, they still have to maintain some sort of position as kind of balanced and nuanced, center right wise men who dont fall into these partisan pitfalls. When, in fact, you know, bears repeating again, we are facing, the united states is facing an existential threat to its constitutional system, to its alliances, to world order. This is not a normal election. Donald trump is not a normal candidate. He is deeply, mentally unstable. The idea that, somehow, this is a difficult problem to reason out because you think Kamala Harris might be you know, one other interesting thing, joe. People say, i have no idea what Kamala Harris is going to do, but i know itll be too far to the left and i Cant Vote for her. Well, pick a lane. Either you have no idea what shes going to do, or you know what shes going to do and it is unacceptable. What theyre really saying is, i know it is shameful to vote for Donald Trump, and i need so have some way to get out from under the moral, excuse me, the moral stigma of voting for trump, which is what i was going to do anyway. Yeah, what theyve always what theyre always going to do. Willie, again, picking up what tom just said, isnt it funny . Theres constant contradictions in these people looking for their Permission Structure. Theyll go, i dont know where Kamala Harris stands. Shes flipflopped too much. Shes moved to the center too much. Shes going to be too left. Shes going to be too center. Shes going to be too left. Again, they are so desperate. Just following up on what we were talking about, we talked about some of her policy on helping Small Business Owners, on helping firsttime homebuyers, on these things that are very specific. Why do i repeat them . I repeat them because if i were running for office in 2024 or 2020 or in 2010 or in 2000, its what i would do. Its what real conservatives would do. They would stop being theyd stop worrying about the billionaires and multinational corporations and pushing all the Tax Cuts to them and start worrying about Small Business Owners. People on main street u. S. A. Family restaurants, small Hardware Store owners. All of these people fighting against huge, national, international chains. Thats exactly what shes doing. You have the policy. It soundS Pretty conservative to me. Her position on immigration far closer to Ronald Reagans than Donald Trump. Her position on tariffs far closer to conservative republicans in the Wall Street JournalEditorial Page than Donald Trumps. Finally, willie, you said it. Theres talk about not just what she says shes going to do. Lets talk about whats been happening and happening right now. The Stock Market breaks records every day it seems. The dow breaks records every day. The S P breaks records every day. You compare Americas Economy to the rest of the world, especially across the west, we are lapping everybody. Lapping them. China, please. Not even close. Four years ago, people were saying china is going to overtake us. Now, its just the opposite. You look at inflation, way down. Look at gaS Prices, way down. You look at interest rates, down. You look at crime, down. Continuing to go down. Jobs up. Living wages up. Again, we could go on all day. Yet, there will be somebody, again, desperately seeking Permission And Approval for voting for Donald Trump. A man who, again, tried to overthrow and throw out a president ial election on January 6th. Yeah, you took the words out of my mouth. At The End of all that, at The End of that data, let us not forget what he did around the 2020 election. By The Way, hes laying the groundwork to do it again. Already calling it into question. Illegal immigrants are going to vote. Dont trust mailin voting. Put in all these questions because he is deeply concerned about what is going to happen in six weeks. Lets also not forget, by The Way, when he says the Barack Hussein Obama thing, thats the same reason he says kamala instead of kamala. Same reason he talks about haitian immigrants here illegally eating cats and dogs. All those people, theyre not us. Theyre from somewhere else. Kamala harris is from somewhere else. Shes not one of us. Put all that in the stew, and thats where you have this chin stroking from the list of people that you talked about. I just had to laugh listening to the discussion. The idea were talking about Dick Cheney, Dick Cheney as some kind of a rhino or something, when, in fact, the opposite is true. Dick cheney is who hes always been, who was darth vader, the villain to democrats, now coming out to support Kamala Harris. You have actually republicans, trump supporters saying, well, Dick Cheney is a rhino. It bends the mind. It sure does. Staff writer at The Atlantic, Tom Nichols, thank you very much for coming on this morning. And still ahead on Morning Joe, the suspect in the second apparent Assassination Plot against former President Trump appeared in court yesterday. Some allies of Donald Trump in the Nebraska State Legislature recently indicated at his insistence they would force a special legislaive session to switch to a winnertakeall system. A lone republican is tabling that move. In a letter obtained by Nbc News, State SenatorMike Mcdonnell, republican, writes, quote, after deep consideration, it is clear to me that, right now, 43 days from Election Day, is not the moment to make this change. Trump responded saying, unfortunately, a democratturnedrepublican State Senator decided to get in The Way of a great Common Sense victory. Just another grandstander, writes Donald Trump. Lets bring in former litigator, msnbc legal correspondent lisa rubin. Msnbc contributor Mike Barnicle joins the table, as well. Good morning to you both. Lisa, lets talk about what Donald Trump and his allies in the Republican Party were trying to do in nebraska. People will remember there is that electoral vote in the omaha area. Joe biden won it in 2020. Trump said it should be a winnertakeall. Whoever wins the votes wins the state. Theyre focused on nebraska because of The One electoral vote which could make the difference in the election. I want to point out something to you, willie, and our viewers. Last week when Lindsey Graham went as an emissary of the Trump Campaign to nebraska, his visit coincided with the 90th day before the Electoral College Meets. Thats significant because the state of maine said if nebraska were to make a change, it, as the other nonwinnertakesall state would make the same change to counteract or counterbalance that. Lindsey graham waited until a day on which maine could no longer have that option. Maine law requires that any change be made in their law 90 days before it takes effect. In other words, he visited on a wednesday. By thursday, we were at the 89 day mark. Maine is now in a place to make no such change. That could have been a motivating factor for Mike Mcdonnell, as well as concern for his own constituents. The Decision Mcdonnell made this close to the election, it is amazing that Mike Mcdonnell is now thought of as getting the profile in courage awards. A Common Sense decision, Profiles In Courage. It is not just a Common Sense decision. Im not usually the cynic, but Mike Mcdonnell is rumored to want to be the mayor of omaha. What looks like Profiles In Courage could also be a profile in tactical Decision Making for a wouldbe candidate. But youre right to say a decision this close in time to an election should be Common Sense for anyone. Yet, there are no legal barriers to making these sorts of decisions at thiS Point. There is no supreme Court Precedent that would say a state cannot do this. Thats why we need the Mike Mcdonnells of the world to stand up and say, no, im not going to support this. Let me just say, jonathan lemire, Mike Mcdonnell actually is a profile in courage. If anybody that has been the redhot focus of Donald Trump and his supporters understand what Mike Mcdonnell is going to be going through. Not only over the next 43 days but for a very long time to come. From enraged supporters. He did the right thing. He really did. But nothing easy about it at all. No, lets remember what happened to some of the State Election officials who stood up to Donald Trump in 2020. Rusty bowers for one in arizona. Right. Drummed out of office. Received threats around the clock for weeks. Eventually testified on Capitol Hill about it. Others in, you know, the Secretary Of State in georgia, brad raffensperger. The list goes On And on. People who really had their lives turned upside down because they did defy Donald Trump. It is worth underscoring, willie, why this one electoral vote is so important. The Simplest Path for democrats, frankly, the only path available for President Biden, still there for Vice President harris, to get to 270 electoral votes, wisconsin, michigan, pennsylvania. If those are the only three Battleground States you win, thats 269. You need one more. The Omaha Vote would be The One. Underlines how close Donald Trump believes this election is going to be. Hes grasping for every vote he can get. Lets talk about georgia, as well, lisa. Yesterday, the State Election board there unanimously approved a new rule that would make pictures, photographs of ballots available to the public within three days after an election. Itd give candidates and voters the ability to check the Vote Count and identify concerns more quickly. Unclear if the new rule will be finalized in time for novembers election. Also, Georgias Board of elections opened an investigation into eight county Election Boards and how they handle thousands of challenges to voter registration. Sort through what both those stories mean. Lets start with the first one about making the Ballot Images transparent. You noted, willie, that all five members of georgia Election Board voted for that. I think its because it represents something different to each side. Remember, this is not happening in a vacuum. The georgia Election Board has been considering change after change to its rules. We have a trial Coming Up on October 1st about two of the most controversial of those rules. One that allows county Election Board members to conduct a reasonable inquiry after an electiOn And before certification. The other that allows them to demand any and all electionrelated documentation. You can see then why how the two nonMaga Board members might favor a system where you get to see the transparent images of ballots. That will allow people to be their own check on counties that say, oh, wait, i couldnt possibly certify these Election Results because Theres Irregularity X or alleged fraud y. By make those images available to everyone, perhaps theyre hoping that that will serve as a check. On the other hand, for the three Maga Board members, this is also an opportunity to give the Voting Public and all sorts of Citizen Activists the kind of people maybe trained by mitchell, the opportunity to sow that doubt themselves and distrust in the result. Remember, they did, to their credit, the governor, Secretary Of State, they counted, they counted again in 2020, they counted a third time by hand to make sure they get it right. Trying to protection the election again this time. Msnbc legal correspondent isa rubin, thanks, as always. Mika . The man accused in the apparent Assassination Plot against Donald Trump at his Florida Golf Course earlier this month may face more serious charge. Federal prosecutors submitted new evidence in a Court Filing Yesterday seeking to prove that suspect, Ryan Routh, was at trumps Golf Club with the sole intention of killing the former president. Routh is currently being held on charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted Felon And Possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. After authorities said he was seen with a long gun lying in wait on September 15th outside trumps international Golf Club, where trump was golfing. Yesterdays filing also revealed a note written by routh, declaring, quote, this was an assassination attempt. Rouths lawyer characterized the events as a publicity stunt. At the same time, former President Trump criticized the initial charges against Routh Yesterday, accusing the Department Of Justice and the fbi of mishandling and downplaying the case while giving the suspect a, quote, slap on the wrist. Trump made the comments in a Campaign Press Release, suggesting without any evidence, that the investigation is biased. Additionally, he called for florida officials to handle the case. The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment about trumps remark. State attorney for Palm Beach county, florida, dave aronberg. I remember the day this happened. You saying that theyre going to start probably with initial charges and then gather the evidence before they bring stronger charges. At first, first thing they needed to do waS Put some charges out there that they had him on dead to right, keep him in jail, while they build the bigger case. Yeah. Good morning, joe and mika. Yes, in this handwritten letter, Itll HelpFederal Prosecutors in three ways. First, it provideS Proof of intent. Now, it is easier to charge for attempted assassination of a major president ial candidate, an attempted assassination of a former president. That can get routh up to life in prison. Those are the more serious charges that Trump And Desantis want the feds to charge. The feds are just following the evidence and doing the right thing here. Also, that letter shows that routh is a danger to the community. That was used in yesterdays hearing to keep him detained pretrial. Hes not going anywhere. Hes not getting out of jail before trial and perhaps never again. Also, that letter undermines his future insanity defense. Now, the letter didnt say the martians were out to get him. This is a guy who knew what he was doing and took great planning to try to accomplish it. He had the understanding to know he would likely not succeed and would probably end up dead. Thats why it sounded like a suicide note. So this guy may have a screw loose, joe, but the letter and his attempts to flee afterwards cuts the legs out from under any future insanity defense. Well, its one thing that the Wall Street JournalEditorial Page talked about this morning. They talked about hiS Political motives. Said there are two types of shooters. There are the sort of crazy. They wrote it far better than i just said it. But there are those that have the, quote, screw loose, and then theres those like John Wilkes Booth who have a specific, political purpose in mind. While this guy may have the, quote, screw loose, for prosecutors, for the sake of prosecution, that letter and other things give them what they need to put him into this second and, again, as the Wall Street JournalEditorial Page said, more dangerous category of actually being politically motivated. May i say, this is just something we usually dont see in many, many assassination attempts, many Mass Shootings. There are people that you see that are being, you know, sent for shooting up schools, shooting up churches, or shooting up other places, and you look at them and you understand, there probably is no motivation we will ever understand because Mental Illness is involved. But, again, in this case, it seems like, especially his letter, moves uS Past that. So the feds can actually prosecute him for knowing exactly what he was trying to do. Yes. You know, its scary when you dont know the motivation. In las vegas, the largest Mass Shooting in our countrys history, we still dont know the motivation behind that guys attempt well, his successful Shooting And Killing of so many people. You know, it was not just the note that was found but, also, there was a map found on hiS Phone to drive from West Palm Beach to mexico. Thats a long drive. That shows you hes trying to flee. Hes a flight risk, yeah. That keeps him in Prison Pretrial because he is a flight risk, but it shows he also knew right and wrong. Insanity defense, you didnt know the difference between right and wrong. When youre trying to flee, you knew what you were doing was wrong. If youre going to charge for attempted assassination here, you have to show not just intent but that the defendant took a substantial step toward accomplishing his goal. Preparation is not enough. They found he had 11 rounds and one in the chamber, pointed in trumps direction. That shows you, i think, that he took a substantial step. I think youll see an indictment forthcoming where he is charged with much more serious crimes. All right. State attorney for Palm Beach county, florida, dave aronberg. Great to have you on this morning. Appreciate it. Thank you. Coming up, President Biden is set to deliver a Speech Today at the united nations General Assembly, marking what will likely be his last major appearance on the world stage. The Washington Post is titled the Gop Cant resist the allure of a trumpfriendly, black conservative. Of course, id take great exception to this man ever being called a conservative. Yes. But he is a selfdescribed conservative, and your point welltaken, regardless of that. But talk about that. And the cause that it comes to North Carolina and possibly the top of the ticket. Right. Mark robinson, we all know about the Cnn Story that broke last week. You know, Campaign Manager and the rest of his staff has left. The Republican Governors are no longer giving money to his campaign. Its basically seen as a lost cause. He was behind before, and now s further behind. He could potentially drag down the republican ticket in this crucial Swing State that Donald Trump thought he had wrapped up. Why did they do this . Well, heres a guy who is like a maga african american, and the Republican Party, todays republican Party Cant resist that, no matter how inexperienced or inappropriate or just plain whacko the person is. Remember Herschel Walker . Gene, Herschel Walker actually helped cost republicans the united states senate. Exactly. Again, they thought, oh, hes black. Oh, he likes me. Exactly. Oh, hes a star. This weekend, Wall Street JournalEditorial Page, i think it was friday for the weekend edition, said this is why republicans keep losing. Well. They keep selecting the wrong people in the primaries who want to Posture And Pose and want to act really angry, and thats why they lose these state races. Thats why they lose congressional battles. And its why thiS Party, the party of trump, continues to stagger along nine years later. Our top story this hour, the ongoing escalation in the Middle East will be a theme at the united nations General Assembly this week. And aS President biden prepares to address world leaders today, in one of his final speeches on the world stage, the president is set to discuss global challenges, like the Climate Crisis as well as the ongoing conflicts in sudan, the Middle East, and Russias War on ukraine. Thats according to senior administration officials who spoke to Nbc News. Officials also said President Biden will highlight his efforts to restore americas global leadership during his term. Lets bring in White House national Security AdviserJake Sullivan. Jake, thanks so much much for being with us. What message does the president want to get across at the general Assembly Today . First, thanks for having me. Today is going to be something of an unusual speech because, as you know, its the president s final address to the world aS President. What hes going to say is that, at times of great Change And Challenge over his more than 50 year career, hes seen the world pull together. Hell do that again. Hell talk about the challenges and changes were seeing, but send the message that weve seen these moments before. Weve come through them stronger, and he is confident we can do that again. The president has extraordinarily frustrated, at least over the past six months, on Benjamin Netanyahu pushing away any proposed ceasefire. It looked, several weeks ago, like we may be getting close with many inside his own cabinet, his Defense Minister, many people in israel, across the Middle East, allies of israel, arab allies, the eu, the united states, all supporting a plan to bring the Hostages Home and begin a badly needed ceasefire. Yet, netanyahu pushed that away. Now, of course, the War Erupting with hezbollah. Has the president given up on the possibility that Benjamin Netanyahu and hamas will ever sign a Ceasefire Deal . No, he absolutely hasnt given up. We remind ourselves frequently of what George Mitchell said the day the northern Ireland Peace process was concluded. He said, these kinds of negotiations are 700 days of failure and one day of success. There have been difficulties and setbacks. Weve had challenges getting the Prime Minister across the line. Weve had challenges getting hamas leader, sinwar, across the line. But they are determined to keep at it. The president this week in New York will be huddling with other leaders to try to bring about a Ceasefire And Hostage deal in gaza. Really, critically, to try to avert an allout war in the Middle East, something that we have worked hard to avert since october 7th. Lets talk about that, jake. It does appear for the most anyway that netanyahu and the idf Have Turpturned their atten, at least for now, up to he has hezbollah in the north, to lebanon. Theyve taken out members of hezbollah, civilians, as well. Obviously, this comes after, not just months, but years of hezbollah attacking israeli civilians in the north of their own country. So what is the risk here . Obviously, you have said, you know, israel is justified in defending itself here, but you worry about the escalation. What do you worry about may come next here . Look, as i said, since hamas attacked israel in the vicious Slaughter And Massacre october 7th, weve been worried this could spill over into a broader regional conflict. Theres been moments that worry really spiked. It spiked in the days following october 7th. It spiked again in april when iran launched 300 missiles and drones. We defeated that attack. And its spiking again now. But we have averted it in those previous spikes, and i believe that we can still find a path forward to get deescalation between israel, across the northern border between israel and lebanon, and bring about a diplomatic solution that allowS People to return to their homes. We use wider war for the catchall phrase, a euphemism for something. What does a wider war look like in the Middle East . For one thing, and we saw the beginnings of it, as i said, when there was that direct attack from iran against israel. So if a country like iran got brought in in a larger way in this conflict, other countries, as well, began to get Engull Vd engulfed in it, thats a wider war. Right now, across the northern border is the continuing, sustained exchange of fire. You know, your viewers should remember how this all started. It started because hezbollah attacked israel. Right. Not because israel attacked hezbollah. So real is trying to send a clear message that its not going to tolerate a situation where its Citizens Cant Return home. It is going to try to create an outcome where, in fact, they can. Some 80,000 of them. But we believe the best way to do that is not through escalation into war. We believe the best way to do that is through a diplomatic solution. Thats what were working on this week. Israels Defense Minister gallant said the other day its moved Center Of Gravity moved north. Today, how do you deal with a Government Led by Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu whose objective appears to many people to be focused on eradicating hezbollah and hamas at the same time, every last member of hamas, he said, at the expense of the hostages. When will the hostages be priority one . I can tell you, they are priority one for president Joe Biden and for me. Ive met with the Hostage Families many times, two or three times just in the past month alone. I have seen firsthand the heartbreak they are going through. We stay up nights trying to figure out a way to get across the line on this as far as a hostage deal. And we have spoken out directly about our concern when weve seen the Prime Minister not take steps that we think are necessary to get to that deal. At the moment, i would say the biggest challenge is actually that hamas sinwar, if theyre prepared to come to the table, itll be on us to get the Prime Minister to the table and close this out. Thats something the president will speak to today. What steps has he not taken . As things stand, since the brutal murder of those six hostages, including a young american, hersh goldberg polin, hamas has actually refused to really engage in a discussion about the terms of what would bring the ceasefire across the table. Theyve essentially taken a step back. Theres a reason for that. Its because sinwar is rooting for chaos. Hes rooting for that wider war we were just talking about. Its our job working with the mediators, qatar and egypt, to try to drive hamas back to the table. Then its our job to get israel in a position where they can accept the Ceasefire And Hostage deal that wasnt just President BidenS Proposal, it was a proposal fully embraced by the entire u. N. Security council and the wider world. Its one that would leave israel more secure. To your point, one that would bring the Hostages Home, including american hostages. Jake, lets move to ukraine. Kyiv is asking for u. S. Permission to use u. S. Made missiles to strike deeper into russia. The biden administration at thiS Point has not given that permission. Ukraine saying thats essential to their ability to defend itself and win this war. What is the hesitancy . First, President Biden will have the chance to speak with President Zelenskyy when he hosts him in washington later this week. Obviously, this will be a topic of conversation. What our Defense Department haS Pointed out with respect to Longrange Strike is there are many deferent capabilities that we have to put on the table in order for ukraine to be able to achieve its goal, which is to win a just and sustainable peace. And we are going to work through all of that with the ukrainians. In the meantime, i would just like to remind viewers, the united states has mobilized a massive amount of military Equipment And Capability to help ukraine thwart Vladimir Putins fundamental ambition, which was to wipe ukraine off the map. Today, ukraine is a free and proud nation. Were proud, as well, as the united states in that. Jake, theres obviously been a Balancing Act for you, the president , the National Security team, since this were broke out. Id like you to answer to the criticism. Youre getting it from both sides. Donald trump and others. Donald trump actually blaming the united states for making Vladimir Putin invade ukraine, which, of course, iS Preposterous. But many people that support Donald Trump, that wing of the trump Republican Party, think we should have never gotten involved in the war, want it to end immediately. Then on The Other Side, the biden administration being attacked for not doing enough, for making Ukraine Fight with their hands tied behind their back. Im curious your response to that and the Balancing Act that has been required by the biden administration from the beginning. With the spector, yes, the spector, i know a lot of people are saying drive straight to moscow, like to brush this aside, but the possibility of the use of nuclear weapons. A foreign leader who knowS Putin well specifically said, at the again beginning of this war, put him in the corner. Show him there is no way out. This man will use nuclear weapons. Talk about that constant balance. You know, joe, you put it very well. Because we are trying to navigate between two shoals. One shoal is the shoal of paralysis. We could get paralyzed by the risk of escalatiOn And really do nothing. We have rejected that by providing ukraine with just an overwhelming amount of firepower and capability. Thats allowed them to push back against the russian onslaught, hold their capital, hold their country, hold their democracy. We have not blinked in the face of russian threats and saberrattling. We have continued to this day to supply them with the weapons and capabilities they need. The other shoal is entirely ignoring the risk of escalation. Its easy to do that on Opinion Pages or on television, but it is not easy to do that when you sit in a Situation Room and the Intelligence Community tells you, there is a risk that this could, in fact, escalate into a direct conflict. We balance that, the risk of escalation against the risk of paralysis, and we make sure were decisive and sure and fast in moving an unbelievable amount of stuff into ukraine for them to be able to use to defend their country. I am very proud, not just of what the united states has done on this front, but the 50 nations that Joe Biden has rallied to help ukraine defend itself. We will see with President Zelenskyy later this week what additional steps we can take to continue to support them. And the final point goes to the criticism that we shouldnt be involved in this at all. You guys have been tireless advocates for the basic proposition, that when there is an aggressor in the heart of ukraine, the united states and its allies must stand up. Because if we dont, the consequences are that that aggressor keeps going and, ultimately, the united states gets directly involved in a war. Lets not forget, we are helping ukraine hold the line against russia without putting u. S. Forces on the ground and in the breech, causing casualties to them. That is an important factor for the president of the united states. Vice president harris made that point in the debate a couple weeks ago. If we let Putin Roll through ukraine, whats next . Poland and Eastern Europe. So with all that as a backdrop, what is reasonable for people watching today, people who are scared and worried and frustrated by this war, what is a reasonable way for it to end . When you have somebody on The Other Side of the table in Vladimir Putin who i think youd agree isnt exactly a rational partner to negotiate with, what is an offramp . What is a way to resolve this with ukraine keeping what it wants to keep, putin perhaps getting something he wants . How does this end, in your view . It is a very important question. Its the question that will be the central Agenda Item for the meeting between President Biden and President Zelenskyy later this week. What President Zelenskyy intends to do is come to describe to the president how he thinks the united states and our allies can put ukraine in the best possible position on the battlefield so it can be in the best possible position at the negotiating table. Now, we cant dictate the terms. Only ukraine can decide for itself what the actual shape of a just and sustainable peace are. What we can do is make sure ukraine is in a strong position when that negotiation comes, so theyre negotiating from a position of confidence and not of weakness. You think putin will ever come to the table and say, this didnt go The Way i wanted it to go. I understand now im not going to roll my tanks into kyiv and raise the russian flag. Im ready to sit down. Do you see him getting to that point . This war has ground away at russias basic vitality. If you look at the sheer number of casualties killed and wounded among the russians, A Million leaving the country. Yes, their War Machine is cranking, but theyre getting hollowed out. Over time, whether itS Putin or the people around him, they will see the futility in continuing to try to drive on this. Its incumbent on us to hasten that day. President biden came to office saying itd be the competition of a rivalry with china that would be the defining one of his term. Obviously, events in ukraine and the Middle East have gotten in The Way. Now, as the president is in his final months in office, what progress has been made there in that Relationship Or Rivalry with beijing . Well, actually, i was just in beijing a few weeks ago. I had the chance to sit down with xi jinping. I had the chance to sit down with their top Military Commander, the first time weve actually sat facetoface with their top Military Commander in many years. What the president has attempted to do iS Put the u. S. In a position to compete effectively and compete in a way that defends our interes and our values. I believe he has been very successful in that, while at the same time ensuring that competition doesnt spiral into conflict. If you look at what people predicted when we came into office, china would surpass the united states, maybe during Joe Bidens first term. Nobody is talking about that anymore. If you look at the strength of our alliances in the indopacific, if you look at the strength of our innovatiOn And industrial base, and the steps weve taken to protect our advanced technologies so China Cant use them against us, i think the record with respect to our competitive Position Visavis China is extremely strong. Weve done all that, as you say, while also contending with crises elsewhere. Last point, it was the Prime Minister of japan who said the ukraine of today could be the East Asia of tomorrow. President biden will make that point in his Speech Today. We shouldnt think of europe as one Thing And Asia as another. Theyre connected. Being strong on ukraine is, in a way, actually being strong visavis the prc. The guns of europe, jake, had been quiet since 1945, until russia invaded ukraine. After Russias Invasion of ukraine, the president of the united states managed to get not only macrOn And other European Leaders together at the table in support of ukraine. Is this going to be the stamp of the biden presidency when historians look at it . I believe it will be one of the stamps. I think if you remember back to just before february 2022, every expert, including many who appeared on thiS Program, said kyiv could fall in a week. Its 2 1 2 years later. Kyiv still stands. Ukraine still stands free and proud. Yes, the fight goes on. Yes, it is hard and tough. We have to hang in there to help ukraine ultimately win. But i believe that President Biden rallying the world to push back against russian aggression will be a great historical legacy for him. But not the only one. I think his broader revitalization of alliances, his investment in the core sources of american strength, and his bringing to a close an era of war that the united states fought in for two decades. He will be able to hand off to his successor a united states whose fundamentals are sound and strong when it comes to our National Security. Even as we have to continue to contend with these crises, which will we do day in, day out, including here in New York. White house national Security AdviserJake Sullivan, thank you so much for being on the show today. Thanks, jake. We appreciate it. Thank you. Take care. Welcome back to Morning Joe. Look at that. Washington is a little foggy this morning. Drive into washington, d. C. , its like hat tip, fog hat. Slow ride, baby. Q is on his game today. So good. In a completely different segue. Very awkward. Jerry baker also on his game today. Im complained constantly the last 30 years that nobody takes Debt And Deficit seriously. Nobody worries about it. I mean, you know, were Coming Up on the 30 Year Anniversary of getting into congress, so the class of 94. Balanced the budget four years in a row. Anniversary. For the first time in a long time, the only time its happened ina century. Balanced the budget four years in a row, the only time its happened in a century. The consequences of completely ignoring that over the past 20 yearsastronomical. When i left congress, we had a 5 Trillion national debt. We have a 35 Trillion national debt. It exploded at record rates under Donald Trump. It just keeps going up. Jerry baker talks about trumponomics. Theres nothing conservative about Donald Trump. In fact, its the opposite. Gerard baker says this, the former president S Proposals might better be thought of as oprahnomics. HiS Plan for an economy near full employment and a Deficit Close to 7 of gdp, the kind of fiscal Incontinence Weve only tolerated in times of war or depression. Its to channel ms. Winfrey and say to voters, and you get a tax cut, and you get a tax credit, and you get a tax deduction. Adding trillions more to the federal debt which is already well above 100 of the gdp iS Playing Russian Roulette with the economy. Mike barnicle, i know people dont want to hear it. I know people didnt want to hear it when, you know, we would say it. Rattner and i were talking five, six years ago about the national debt, how it is going to lead to inflation. How big spending is going to lead to inflation. Nobody wanted to talk about it. There were several people, even a Nobel Prize Economics winner, inflation will never come. It came and came bad and hurt americans. Ive been saying it for a long time. Im a broken record here. You know, when the Debt Bomb explodes, were going to go off the cliff. Were going to take the whole world down with us economically. If washingtOn And if congress doesnt get serious about cutting spending and, yes, moving, if not toward a more balanced budget, a more rational approach to spending. We cannot continue to allow the federal debt to explode. You know, joe, you missed im sure you didnt miss it when you read it, but a Key Line in Jerry BakerS Piece this morning, talking about trumponomics and trumpS Proposals hes made in various forms. Jerry baker writes, the good is outweighed by a load of bad. Thats, in essence, Donald TrumpS Pitch on economics. I mean, you know because people have spoken to you about it. Trump addressed a group of financiers and bankers in New York a couple weeks ago. People were stunned at his ignorance at how the economy really works. The truth is Donald Trump has no clue about two things. How the economy really works for ordinary people and the lives of ordinary people. Thats what were confronted with right now. Jerry also talks about, willie, the tariffs, which are going to be crippling for Americas Economy. Yeah. The tariffs that are going to really be crippling for Working Class Americans who are struggling to get by week by week by week. Its going to cost its going to drive the cost up just astronomically. I mean, 10 on products across the board. 60 tariffs on things coming in from china. I mean, youre talking, again, about a man who iS Putting up borders. HeS Putting up economic borders that Ronald Reagan and republicans have always tried to Knock down. Putting up borders that will stop legal immigrants from Coming To America and working. Let us remember, this is not about people crossing the border illegally. Donald Trump And Jd vance are talking about sending back immigrants who were here legally, who the mayor of springfield, who Small Business OwnersIn Springfield, Who Factory OwnersIn Springfield, ohio, say are actually improving their economy. Just like, just like Ronald Reagan said they would in his farewell address. Yeah, and thats a Point Baker makes in that piece, too. We need, in a low unemployment economy, we need those immigrants to come to this country legally. It helps the economy. Youre right, joe, i mean, theres no theres no economist, conservative or democrat, who thinks tariffs are not a tax on everyday people who need to go out and buy things and who dont think china will respond with tariffs of its own, jacking up prices on everything coming in from china. Donald trump uses it as a catchall. Ill use tariffs to pay for everything, including the infamous rambling rant where he said tariffs will pay for Child Care and education in this country. Lets turn to the director of the Polling Institute at harvard, John Della volpe. He has a new survey out of young voters and the issues that matter most to them. Always great to see you. Before we get specifically into the issues, lets look among young voters at the general election in your new survey. Remind people what age voters were talking about, then well show the number here. Sure thing. Were talking about young voters under the age of 30. 18 to 29yearold voters. Lets remember, willie, this is the group that turned out in Record Numbers in 2020 and overwhelmingly supported Joe Biden. Many people believe thats the reason that he was elected president. We can see here a dramatic shift over the last several months. Kamala harris is leading trump by 32 points among likely voters. Just several months ago, Joe Biden in the same position was leading by only 13 points. In fact, over the summertime, i had some polling, i looked at other polling where Donald Trump was actually leading the democratic candidate in the Battleground States. This is a massive, significant shift in the last several months. Well talk about whats going into the shift. The next one is, do you have a favorable or unfavorable view of these people, listing the candidates and their Vice President ial Running Mates. What do you see here . You can see clearly blue and red. It isnt democrats and republicans only. Its being above water or under water. What you can see is both donald Trump And Jd vance are underwater by 28 to 30 percentage points. Only less than 3 out of 10 people have favorable views of them. Tim walz is not incredibly wellknown, but he iS Plus 14. As is Kamala Harris at plus 5, close to 50 . Her Job Approval is up 12 points in the last couple months, as well. When you look at the difference, Joe Biden was at the top of the ticket. Put that back up. Biden, 19 points underwater among young voters. Kamala harris with a Fivepoint Edge in favorability. That was a concern among democrats. Biden, who did so well with young voters in 2020, simply wasnt resonating this time around. The thought was some of it might have been the war in gaza. Some think he is too old, is out of touch, and doesnt understand me right now. Thats changed. Vice president harris just 59 years old, couple decades the t. Whats hitting home with the young voters . What are they concerned about . Overwhelming, through the polling and the Focus Groups i conduct, its Cost Of Living and the economy broadly. The concern that young people have about is The American Dream available to them . In terms of offering, opportunity to own a home, pay for education, those sorts of issues. That is the driving issue, of course, among women and other folks, reproductive freedom, Health Care, mental Health Care. The overwhelming issue that is driving young people and their concerns at this stage of the campaign is concerns about the economy and the sense of financial stability. Thats what they yearn for. Does it seem they believe Kamala Harris would do a better job than Joe Biden is doing . Is that how you read that . If the economy is the number one concern, which it is for almost everyone in this country, they think she will be better at this than Joe Biden has been . Yes. In fact, we asked a series of other questions, personal asry attributes and which candidate do you trust on a host of issues . Vice president harris has Double Digit leads on climate, on Health Care, on many issues. Shes also leading on the economy, something that many people wouldnt necessarily expect at this stage. She has, i think, close to a Tenpoint Lead among likely voters, even on the economy. This is great news for the harriswalz ticket. The question is, will young People Vote . Thats always the question. Weve been having this debate for 15 years or so, right . Of course, what comes up could also come town in terms of her numbers here. Mike, in 2018 and 2020, i sat here and said well have record turnout. We had record turnout. This cycle looks to be close to 2020 turnout at this stage, but whats driving that is actually increase enthuiasm among young democrats. Young republicans are less likely to vote. The closer to the election, the more likely you are to vote. The extent to which Turnout Rolls back, its not because of democrats at this stage. Its because of younger republicans. Democrats, 74 of democrats say they are, quote, definitely going to vote. Fascinating. Lets look at one more number here. Interesting. Which candidate to these qualities apply to more . Compare Vice President harris to former President Trump, kind of going down the list here. Appears she has the edge in all but funny, i guess, is the only one where there is a margin of error race. The jury is out. These are attributes that our students develop based upon their conversations with other people. You can see clearly, 30, 40 point leads on empathy, competence, relatability, strong, okay . Most Young Americans look at Kamala Harris and Donald Trump and say, she is a strong candidate. Thats meaningful. Patriotic is also a tossup, something that i dont think people would have necessarily expected just a couple of years ago. That democrats, Kamala Harris are trying to reclaim, and they are reclaiming what it means to be a patriot in this country. That Strength Number is fascinating. Thats Donald Trumps entire brand, strength versus weakness. Im the big, strong guy. She has an edge among young voters. John Della Volpe from the institute at harvard, thank you very much. For whats worth protecting, the hartford is here. To get your free quote, go to the bucks got your back. It is the scene of unspeakable horror. A barn in mississippi, the site of one of the most notorious killings in history. 14yearold Emmett till was tortured and murdered august 28th, 1955. His crime, allegedly whistling as a white woman. The two white men charged with Tills Murder were acquitted in what many Call A Mockery of justice with an all white jury reaching that verdict very quickly. Decades later, The Barn itself sits on the property of a dentist. For generations, few people knew of its significance, including the dentist. In the New BookThe Barn, the secret history of a murder in mississippi, Author Wright Thompson writes this, The Barn where till was murdered was just some guys barn, full of decorative Christmas Angels and duck hunting gear, sitting there in Sunflower County without a marker or any sort of memorial. Hiding in plain sight, haunting the land. He chronicles his travels to mississippi to uncover several unknown truths about the infamous crime, while also exploring some other sites were forgotten or erased by history. Mark Wright Thompson joins us now, senior writer for espn. Also with us, president of the national action network, host of politics nation, reverend Al Sharpton. Wright, congratulations on the book. It is haunting and chilling and this barn is just it sat, i guess, 23 miles from where you grew up in mississippi. Of course, you didnt know the significance of it. As you say, the guy who lives there didnt know the significance of it. What started you on this journey . How did you learn about The Barn . It was during the pandemic. Someone, patrick williams, who works for the Emmett Till interpretive center asked me one day, have you ever been to The Barn . I said, what barn . He said, we need to take a ride. I went over there and found, i dont know if you guys have been to memory sites anywhere in the world, but i found that it felt like a vessel that carried some sort of existential truth about, you know, our past, our present, and it was so haunting and menacing, just sitting there unmarked. I got obsessed with it and started doing this, like, before it was a magazine, a book, its something personally. If im going to live in thiS Place, i need to know about it. People feel we know everything there is to know about the Torture And Murder of that young man, 14yearold Emmett till. But theres so much more, as you lay out in the book. What did you find as you started down thiS Path . I found that, you know, both, like, micro and a macro thing. The micro was that there were many details that not only were unknown but had been intentionally erased. So you have the Murder Weapon was sitting in a Safety Deposit Box in a bank in greenwood, mississippi. The barn was unmarked. Then that erasure really hit hard because you realized that the reason we dont know so many details of the story is very intentional. One of the things the book does is try to map the history of the erasure, then the fight of Tills Family members, Reverend Wheeler Parker and Gloria Dickerson down in mississippi to try to fight that erasure. You know, i think, wright, i got to know obviously, i was about being born when this happened. She talked about how it was just normalizing, not talking about what happened, that people that had knowledge of what happened in mississippi. Talk about that because were in a different climate now, where we are seeing polarizatiOn And racism, where people just go. They knew what happened to Emmett Till, knew why, knew who, and it was normal to keep it quiet in wisconsin, in that area. The word is almost like a code of silence opposed to silence. Emerita. Think of the story the Defense Council told. Till sitting in the courtroom, the jury agreed with the Defense Council that this was all a hoax by the naacp and the communist party, that hay had gone and found a body and thrown it in theal river, that there had been a buy off with money, and so people were more willing to believe an insane Conspiracy Si than a simple truth about themselves. They were calling it fake news, i guess. Exactly right. The parallels are really shocking. Wright, this event that you capture so incredibly in this book, one of the best books ive read in a long, long time, the born, occurred over 70 years ago. Your home state. Its almost as if you can feel Emmett Till, his shadow, his memory, through the ripples of leaves, wind blowing through the trees in mississippi. Has mississippi changed that much, though . You know, that is the million dollar question. The book is an exploration of that. I think some things cosmetically have changed, but i think that some essential soul remains the same. Until were honest and until we can tell the story, this is who we are, this is what happened here, then there is no real hope of even starting the process. You know, you ask if mississippi has changed. I dont think and id be curious what you think, but, i mean, i dont think we can even start to change until we can say, this is who we are. This is what happened here. Lets stand on a tiny Postage Ground of truth, and lets talk about who we really are. I dont even think weve started that conversation. I mean, the book is a tiny prayer, a pebble in a big lake of hope that that conversation could happen. Lets talk about thiS Phenomenon of memory holing something. It extends beyond mississippi. Its a national phenomenon. Were still dealing with it all the time. You trace in this book. Do you think that today, if another tragedy like this were to happen, would we as a people handle it better . No. I mean, we see it over and over. I mean, we see it every single time something like this happens. You read the news stories from august and september of 1955, and it could have been the summer of george floyd. It could have been trayvon martin. It could have been almost anything. Not only are we not handling it better, i mean, one of the things that was shocking to me to get into old daily newspapers and archives and go through this is this walks you, beat by beat, through the idea that, you know, the arc of the moral universe bends toward tribalism. You know, that, to me, is one of the major subarcs of the story. Because of erasure, we are just doomed to go in circles. I think that is the significance of wrights book, is that had it not been for a girl videotaping with her smartphone george floyd, we might not have gotten convictions there. Look what happened to breonna taylor. I can name cases that are now being solved and not being solved unless you have evidence like that. Thats why the timing of this book, i think, is important, given this electiOn And which way were going to decide to go as a nation. One of the thins ive always admired about you is when something happens, i turn on my tv, youre there. It just makes me think about the hope that it must take to show up to a new group of people who are dealing with something for the first time, that you have been dealing with over and over and over again, and it makes me think of till, the sheriffs of mississippi. They found the body and tried to bury it immediately. I mean, they knew. The governor of illinois, the mayor of chicago stepped in and brought the body back to mamie till. The bravery of her. Let the world see. Yeah. Opening that casket. I mean, those pictures are shocking. I think everybody who is involved in telling this story, because there are a lot of people, and im just one tiny piece in a group of people doing this, that, you know, the Guiding Principle is to honor mamie tills words. Let the world see. You look at The Barn itself, it is an unremarkable structure today, but it holds such significance, not just for mississippi but for the country. What was the reaction to, say, that dentist or the people in the community. Thats where Emmett Till was on. The dentist, who is a lovely guy, who is, you know, well respected by the till family, generous with his space, once he figured out what this is, but also doesnt really understand what it has to do with him. In some ways, the project of the book is to show kind, smart, wellintentioned people who dont understand what this has to do with them, what it has to do with them. New book is called The Barn, the secret history of a murder in mississippi. Its out today. It is extraordinary. Wright thompson, congratulations on the book. Thank you for digging into this story. The mets and braves a couple of years ago, you know, the braves sweeped the mets near The End of the season. Break, you know, Phil Griffin and the rest of mets nations hearts. We will see what happens now. Here is the standings. You got the mets and braves battling starting a threegame series. Nobody whats going to happen. And nobody knows whats going to happen in happy in football because its been crazy, man. I still cant wrap my arms around the fact that Joe Burrow is 03, and Last Night, by The Way, Mac Jones, 5 for 8, came in on Cleanup Duty. Important angle to the story. In the game that Joe Burrow lost, a coming out party for another Lsu SuperstarHeisman Trophy WinnerJayden Daniels, the rookie in the third game of his career, he was awesome Last Night. And dare commanders fans in washingtOn And virginia and maryland Have Hope because this Team Looks like they are playing really well. He was great Last Night. He throws such a pretty deep ball. Yeah. I mean, the Washington Football Franchise and Fans Havent had much to cheer about for decades. But they may have the future. I have a lot of commanders fans in my life because robert about griffin iii Got Hurt and never could have never came back. A similar build. Man, he is off to a spectacular start. Bengals are 03. There is hope. There is. We took note last week, when Jayden Daniels walked on The Field, the first play we took note how different he was from the Bears Rookie Quarterback and other rookie quarterbacks like caleb williams. When Jayden Daniels walked on The Field, first play he looked like owned the place. Thats what you want to see in a young quarterback. Absolutely. And Last Night he was just spectacular. The final score was 3833. The game was not that close. The commanders just killed the team that thought it was going to the Super Bowl, that has burrow and a ton of talent and the commanders outplayed them in every phase of the game. And Jayden Daniels was spectacular. You could see during the first quarter, there was a point at which he just he is like, oh, i figured this out, you know . I figured out pro football like i figured out college football. And then it was like, i can run, i can throw, i can do whatever i want to do. It was amazing. I hope he bulks up a little bit. He is kind of skinny. But, boy, this is exciting. Yeah, no, he can run and he can throw, and if you are a washington fan, you want him to throw and not run. If you run, get to the sidelines faster than everybody else. By The Way, next hour we are going to pick apart the five completions of Mac JonesLast Night, Cleanup Duty in the Bills Game against jacksonville. There are Bumper Stickers up and down the Eastern Seaboard that say that, mac is back. Here comes Mac Jones, watch out, kids. You have been allotted more than enough time to waste time. Now we are getting to the news. Lets go mets. On yesterdays show we picked apart the false narrative emerging from several prominent voice it is that Donald Trump might be unfit for office, but they Cant Vote for Vice President harris because she hasnt given enough details about her policies. Well, i mean, you listen to Donald Trump on the policies. You are going, is this lincoln . Right. Like, is this he talked again yesterday a bit of aristotle in there. Keep that in mind when listening to some of what trump had to say in his rally Last Night in pennsylvania. And vladimir wanted it. Ukraine was the apple of his eye. He never would have gone in. All these things would have never happened. But ukraine now, i see zelenskyy is here, he is the greatest salesman in history. Every time he comes in the country he walks away with 60 billion. Billion. He wants them to win this election so badly. AS President elect, if i win this election, the first thing i am going to do is call up zelenskyy and call up President Putin and i am going to say youve got to make a deal. This is crazy. What a horrible thing that happened just because and its our fault because its a war that should have never been allowed to happen. We didnt have one Terror Attack during my administration with all the Terror Attacks all over the world. We didnt have countries fighting each other. They wouldnt have done it without my permission. They would call me up to ask whether they could go to war with some other country and i said you cant do that. If you do that, i will put big taxes okay, we wont do it. Call me the next day, we decided no not to we had no wars. These guys actually want these people in to our country. Its not even believable. Working with left wing nonprofits to inundate pennsylvania communities, changing the character of small towns and villages all over our country, and changing them forever. They will never be the same. They will never be. Do you think springfield they will never be the same. I dont think the fact is and ill say it now, you have to get them the hell out. You have to get them out. Im sorry. Get them out. Cant have it. [ cheers and applause ] cant have it. They destroyed it. [ Crowd Chanting ] its terrible to say and its a tough thing to do. The damage that sleepy joe i call him sleepy joe. I called him crooked joe. Who is our president . We dont even have do we have a president . Why doesnt he leave . Why doesnt he leave . Think of it. Think of it. I call him crooked joe. That was very effective, it got him out of the race. No, we had a debate and he didnt do too well in that debate. And they came to him and they said, you are down 21 points and you are going to lose. This can only happen to me. I end up with somebody new. Here is the thing. All i have to do is expose her for what she is. She is a communist, okay . She is a communist. And this country is not ready for a communist and, hopefully, never will be. Because that doesnt work. Remember this. I just say this. If you look at Ukraine And Russia, but you know they say russia, i stop the russian pipeline, scored Nord Stream, too, nobody heard tv until i came along. I stopped the biggest economic Development Job they have ever done, i stopped it cold when biden came in, he let them build but he killed our Keystone Pipeline which we needed. He killed keystone. And remember this about russia. Under bush, they took a lot. Under Biden And BarackHussein Obama, has everyone heard of him, barak hussein, a lot of people say he is running the country now. I dont think so. Some people say he is running our country. But under i dont think its biden. Under Barack Hussein ObamaBarack Obama, they took a lot. Right . Under biden they are taking everything. They are taking everything. Okay. In that i guess what he would call the weave, there were so many disgusting hateful things in there, its hard to keep up. We are focused on Foreign Policy, his comments about springfield, yeah, springfield has never been the same since Donald Trump and j. D. Vance and their violent rhetoric has wreaked chaos, havoc, fear, and upended the lives of countlesS People in that town. Ohios Republican Governor wrote an oped asking Donald Trump and j. D. Vance to stop explaining the damage they have done to springfield and speaking up for the legal haitian immigrants who live In Springfield who add to the economy, who add to the society, who are good people, and it was very, very clear what is going on In Springfield is at the hands of Donald Trump and j. D. Vance and that violent rhetoric. And by The Way, speaking of violent and lies. Speaking of rhetoric, she is a communist. We can never have a communist running this country. Yeah, the communist that iS Proposing 50,000 Tax Breaks for first time Small Business Owners, the communist that iS Proposing 25,000 Tax Cuts, Tax Incentivestives for firsttime homebuyers, the communist putting together Tax Incentives, private incentives to help spur 3 Million new homes for construction over the next four years. Doesnt sound like a communist to me. You know why . Because its not a communist. Its interesting. Wall Street JournalEditorial Page, i talked about a column or two that i read over the weekend, you did, too, very disturbing columns. On the journal Editorial Page, very responsible on Donald Trumps lies, the big lie. Been very responsible talking about the lunacy that has taken over the Republican Party many times. Really has. And this morning ryan rootS Political motives, we will learn more as the case proceeds, but he sounds like the person that could be triggered into murder by ugly political debates. Another reason to avoid rhetoric against political opponents and the consequences of losing a president ial election. Donald trump said its the democrats fault. And then immediately thereafter Donald Trump started talking about the cause this is when he was attacking democratic rhetoric in the same truth social post he says, because of this communist left rhetoric, the bullets are flying and it will only get worse. And he always accuses the left. He always accuses Kamala Harris, who now is being attacked for actually being in the center, being communist. But, willie, we were going over the false equivalency of people saying, well, you know, Donald Trump, he may be bad, but at least we know where he stands on policy. We dont know where kamala stands. We know where she stands on a hell of a lot of policies. Here is where Donald Trump stands on policies. Zelenskyy for Donald Trump, we heard it there, is a bad guy. Putin a victim. Vladimir putin invades ukraine. Who does Donald Trump say is at fault . The united states of america. He blames the city brightly shining on The Hill for all the world to see. The city that haS Pushed back russian aggression now since 1945. This the country that has liberated much of Eastern Europe and is now trying to help liberate ukraine. But Donald Trump blames america. He doesnt blame Vladimir Putin. He never has. And so for all the people that want to vote for him,er desperately seeking Permission Structure to vote for him, you will be voting for a man who says america is at blame for Vladimir Putin invading ukraine. We made him do it. By The Way, sounds a lot like a certain historian who has been in the news lately and promoted who said that World War ii Hitler Wasnt the villain, churchill was the bad guy. Hitler and the holocaust, thiS Person says it was just poor logistics and they ended up deciding it was actually more humane to kill 6 Million jews than to let them slowly starve. Donald trump talks about mass deportation, the villages that have been changed. Like, you think its come to the villages of pennsylvania. Mass deportations. The Crowd Chanting send them back. The anthesis are there any conservatives left out there who actually remember Ronald Reagan . Reagan in his Farewell Speech talked about what Small Business OwnersIn Springfield are talking about, how immigrants revive economies. How immigrants make america forever young. Ronald reagan said it. His Farewell Speech. But Donald Trump in this speech is talking and the crowd is chanting, i think, send them back, send them back, then he is talking about massive tariffs. He is going to end wars by slapping massivetives on products that will destroy Americas Economy. If not destroy Americas Economy, it will crush workingclass americans and middleclass americans. Then he brings up the debate against Joe Biden. For some reason doesnt bring up the debate against Kamala Harris. Doesnt bring up the fact that he dodged yet again her request, her demand for a second debate. He keeps dodging it, willie. Why . Because he is horrible on the issues. And yet there is this flat fling Donald Trump will say that, and then youll have people we will get to Tom Nichols on this. But then we will have people going, yeah, but, what does Kamala Harris really think about Quantitative Easing . She is going to talk about 50,000 Tax Breaks for first time Small Business Owners and Experience And Family businesses and people starting businesses on main street usa. But what are the longterm Tax Ramifications about that . Donald trump just goes on stage and grunts and says nonsensical things. On the policy about some of the people you are talking about, wealthy republicans, wealthy independents, a lot of those guys in Silicon Valley who said i got to go with Donald Trump here, you just laid it out. Are you for tariffs . Recordbreaking debt . Is the dow closing a little too high, the do you and S P closed at record highs this big September Rally happening because the fed rate cut, the things happening with the economy. There are policy for you on The Other Side, too, if you want to look at it. Perhaps they are using those as cover for something else, for some other reason they dont want to vote for Kamala Harris. Tom nichols, you wrote in The AtlanticPolicy Isnt going to win this election. You write the great myths of american politics is the Detail Policy positions are crucial to winning elections, yes, policy matters in broad strokes. Candidates take general positions on issues such as taxes, abortion, Foreign Policy. Rather than study white papers or ponder reports from think tanks, most voters count on parties and candidates to signal broad directions and work out the details later. In the 2024 election, Policy Details matter even less than they usually do. Vice president Kamala Harris and her Running Mate minnesota governor Tim Walz seem to have figured this out. Policy proposals are supposed to differentiate the candidates but drawing Policy Sis tinkses with trump are hard when he presents nothing beyond i will fix it and that is all he says, Tom Nichols, is this stuff never would have happened if i had been there. I am going to fix everything when i get there. I alone can fix it, he famously said. There are legitimate questions that we have asked many times on this show about Kamala Harris current positions versus where she was in 2019 and 2020 and she has attempted to answer some of those including a the dain. But i am reminded of our conversation last week with Hillary Clinton when we asked for advice for Kamala Harris and she said, if people want to know in the Weeds Policy details go to the website. Your job as a candidate a lesson she learned in 2015 to tell a story about where you want to take the country . Right. And two things to remember. One is that for trumps own people, for the republican Party And Trump faithful, trump can say anything he wants. It doesnt matter. He is not held to any account about policy. That does those clips we watched, trump could stand there and say, you know, Lake Michigan is actually full of asparagus. A lot of people dont know that. And you have all these people behind Him Nodding going, yeah, thats a great point, you know . It doesnt matter whether its true or false or completely insane. So his side, hiS People, his base and the gop, they are never going to hold him to any specifics. We know that, you know, too often when he has reported on, you know, there is kind of of a collective shrug of saying, well, Donald Trump having another crazy rally Last Night and said a lot of bonkers things. Meanwhile, you know, they turn to the democratic nominee and say, as Bret Stephens did, i need to know exactly what administrative regulations are going to be rolled back aS Part of housing policy. First of all, nobody wins Elections Ton that. And we have had examples in history. Mike dukakis was the candidate that people should have realized after that, you know, when he stood there and, you know, talking about every detail and how he had gone through every line in the budget. You dont win elections on that. You win elections on ideas. You win elections on empathy. You win elections on big directions. And i think some of this is laying a trap, especially from people who really dont just they want a Permission Structure not to vote for Kamala Harris because they will see themselves aS Part of the tribe and thinking about what happens after the electiOn And, you know, i think thats remarkable given that if she is good enough for Dick Cheney, she should be good enough for most conservatives. There is this really kind of intensive effort to say, i would vote for her, but, boy, that infrastructure, you know, the things she said about infrastructure three months ago really got under my skin, so i am not sure if its her or the guy who thinks that legal immigrants should be departed. Coming up, why Donald Trumps imagination is such a frightening place. Thats The Way its characterized by Washington Post reporter Ashley Parker. She joints us to talk about her latest piece straight ahead on Morning Joe. One thing we know is true no matter race, gender, ethnicity. The need to screen when due. For Colon Cancers a priority. Indeed everyone 45 at average risk should screen for Colon Cancer. These folks are getting it done at home with me, cologuard. Cologuard is a oneofakind way to screen for Colon Cancer thats effective and noninvasive. Its for people 45 at average risk, not high risk. False positive and negative results may occur. Ask your provider for cologuard. I did it my way. Nebraska will not change The Way it awards electoral votes. Some allies of Donald Trump in the Nebraska State Legislature recently indicated at his insistence they would support a special legislative session to switch to winner take all system. But a lone republican is tabling it that move. In a letter obtained by Nbc News, State SenatorMike Macdonald writes after deep consideration it is clear to me right now 43 days from Election Day is not the moment to make this change. Trump responded on social media writing, unfortunately, a democrat turned republican State Senator named Mike Mcdonald decided to get in The Way of a great republican Common Sense victory. Another grandstander, writes Donald Trump. Lets bring in former Litigator Msnbc legal correspondentlis is a ruben, and Mike Barnicle as well. Lets take a step back about what Donald Trump and allies in the Republican Party were trying to do in nebraska. People will remember there is that electoral vote in the omaha area. Joe biden won in 2020. One vote. Donald trumps argument and some republicans was the State Vote should be a winner take all. Whoever wins the state, wins all the votes. Correct. One of the reasons they are focused on nebraska is because that one electoral vote could make the difference in the election. I want to point out something to you, last week when Lindsey Graham to nebraska, his visit coincided with the 9 th day before the Electoral College Meets and thats significant because the state of maine said if nebraska were to make a change, it, as the other nonwinner takes all state, would make the same change to counteract or counterbalance that. But Lindsey Graham waited until a day which maine could no longer have that option because Maine Law requires that any change be need in their law 90 days before it takes effect. He visited on a wednesday. By thursday, we were at the 89day mark. Maine is in a place to make no such change. That could have been a motivating factor for Mike Mcdonald as well as concern for his own constituents in omaha. Making the decision as Mike Mcdonald made this close to an election is amazing that we are living in a political culture where Mike Mcdonald is thought of aS Perhaps getting the profiles a Common Sense decision, profiles in coverage. Its not just a Common Sense decision. I am usually not the cynic at this table. Mike mcdonald is rumored to want to be the mayor of omaha. What looks like Profiles In Courage could be a profile in tactical decisionmaking for a wouldbe candidate. But youre right to say decisions this close in time to an election should be Common Sense for anyone and yet there are no legal barriers to making these sorts of decisions at thiS Point. There is no supreme Court Precedent that would say a state cannot do this. Thats why we need the Mike Mcdonalds of the world to stand up and say, no, i am not going to support this. Let my say, jonathan lemire, that Mike Mcdonald actually is a profile in courage. If anybody that has been the Red Hot Focus of Donald Trump and his supporters understands what Mike Mcdonald is going to be going through, not only over the next 43 days, but for a very long time to come, from enraged supporters, and he did the right thing. He really did. But nothing easy about it at all. No. Lets remember what happened to some of the State Election officials who stood up to Donald Trump in 2020. Rusty bowers in arizona was drove out of office received threats around the clock for weeks eventually testified on Capitol Hill about it. Others in, you know, the Secretary Of State in georgia, brad raffensperger. The list goes on, people who had their lives turned upside down because they defied Donald Trump. Why this one electoral vote is so important, the Simplest Path for democrats, still there for Vice PresidentKamala Harris to get to 270 electoral votes, wisconsin, michigan, pennsylvania. If those are the only three Battleground States you win, thats 269. You need one more. Omaha would be The One. Underlines how close Donald Trump thinks this election is going to be, grasping for every vote he can get. Georgia, lisa, the State Election board unanimously approved a new role to make pictures, photographs of ballots available to the public within three days after an election. It would give candidates and voters the act to check the Vote Count and identify concerns more quickly. Unclear if the new rule will be finalized in time for novembers election. Georgias board of elections opened an investigation into eight county Election Boards and how they handled thousands of challenges to voter registrations. So help us sort through what those stories mean. Lets start with the first one about making the Ballot Images transparent. All five members of the georgia Election Board voted for that i think because it represents something different to each side. This is not happening in a vacuum. They have been considering change after change to the rules. We have a trial Coming Up on October 1 about two of the most controversial of those rules. One that allows can county board Election Board next to conduct inquiry and the other to demand any and all olympicsrelated documentation. You can see then why the two nonMaga Board members might favor a system where you get to see the transparent images of ballots because that will allow people to be their own check on counties that say, wait, i couldnt possibly certify these Election Results because there is Irregularity X or alleged fraud y. But making the images available to everyone, perhaps they are hoping that will serve as a check. On the other hand, for the three Maga Board members this is also an opportunity to give the Voting Public and Citizen Activists, trained, to sow that Doubt And Distrust in the results. Coming up, recipients of the Liberty Medal, ukrainian President Zelenskyy, Justice Ruth Bader ginsberg, senator john mccain, and our next guest, acclaimed Filmmaker Ken burns alongside the national Constitution Centers Jeffrey Rosen to preview Tonights Ceremony when Morning Joe comes right back. The man accused in the apparent Assassination Plot against Donald Trump at his Florida Golf Course earlier this month may face more serious charge. Federal prosecutors submitted new evidence in a Court Filing Yesterday seeking to prove that suspect Ryan Routh was at the Golf Club with the intention to kill the former president. He is being held on charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted Felon And Possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. After authorities said he was seen with a long gun lying in wait on September 15th outside trump international Golf Club where trump was golfing. Yesterdays filing also revealed a note written by routh declaring this was an assassination attempt. His lawyer characterized the events as a publicity stunt. At the same time former President Trump criticized the initial charges against Routh Yesterday accusing the Department Of Justice and the fbi of mishandling and downplaying the case while giving the suspect a, quote, slap on the wrist. Trump made the comments in a Campaign Press Release suggesting without any evidence that the investigation is biased. Additionally, he called for florida officials to handle the case. The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment about trumps remarks. Lets bring in i remember the day this happening. You saying and that they are going to start probably with initial charges and then gather the evidence before they bring stronger charges. But at first, put some charges out there that they add him on dead to right, keep him in jail while they build the bigger case . Yes. Good morning, joe and mika. This letter helps Federal Prosecutors in three ways. It provideS Proof of intent. Now its easier to charge for attempted assassination of a major candidate and former president. That can get routh up to life in prison. Those are the serious charges that Trump And Desantis want them to charge. Also, that letter shows that routh is a danger to the community. That was used in the hearing to keep him detained pretrial. He is not going anywhere, he is not getting out of jail before trial and perhaps never again. Also, that letter undermines his future insanity defense. Now, the letter didnt say that the mash shuns were out to get him. He knew what he was doing and took great planning. He had the understanding to know he would likely not succeed and would probably end up dead. Thats why it sounded like a suicide note. He may have a screw loose, but the letter and his attempts to flee afterwards cuts the legs out from under any future insanity defense. Coming up, a bestselling book became a smash hit on broadway. That was the iconic scene from the film the notebook written by Nicholas Sparks. Sparks sold over 150 Million books across the world with 75 Million here in the u. S. And he is at it again with a New Book entitled counting miracles. And the New York times bestselling author joining us now. Great to have you on the show. Many thanks. Want to talk about counting miracles. First, there is an update to the notification notification, which is having a new life on broadway. Tell us about it. Thats a really exciting project with which i was involved. I worked with wonderful producers and we worked on the musical, he the first time i saw that was in chicago and it just blew me away how wonderful away how wonderful it was. Of course, i was there for Opening Night as well. I guess its getting ready to go off on a big u. S. Tour. Really excited to be associated with that project. Thats amazing. I didnt know anything about musicals, so i was blessed to work with people who knew what they were doing. They even have the rain, so there you go. Lets talk about counting miracles. People say how do you top the notebook but you keep doing it. What is the significance of the title . Counting miracles comes from a play on a line out of job, which i guess has a bit of relevance to the story itself. He wonders why bad things happen to him. Once you go over the course of his life, you realize there have been some tragic events he has gone through. His name is jasper. Hes one of three main characters. The title came really from the book of job. Nice to see a struggling young author get such a break here. [ laughter ] youre so prolific. What is the inspiration . What moves you to say this is worth putting pen to paper . Thats a complex profession. First you start with one idea, what it is. This one, counting miracles, i had an image of an old man hurt in the forest with a dog standing over him. Thats the first idea. Couldnt get the image out of my mind, but i didnt know who the old man was, how he was injured, even if the dog was his. Im Nicholas Sparks, ive got to have a Love Story in there too. I need a couple of other characters. What are they . Tanner is inspired by my cousin. Hes a former army. Hes on a journey to find his biological father. Then he meets katelyn. Shes a doctor, divorced mother of two, who iS Pretty much inspired by every divorced woman i know in their 40s and they kind of wonder where are all the good men. These three stories kind of collide. So many of your books have been turned into movies, or in this case now, a musical. When youre writing, do you think about that, like, hey, could this be translated into a different medium . Great question. When im thinking of the story prior to writing, i do try to take Film And Television into account and novels, because i want the story to be original in all three mediums. For instance, id never write a Love Story set on the titanic. Its been done. When it comes to the film, im the first one to say, okay, what do we have to get rid of in the Novel Or Change in the novel to make it work as a film . So i take all those into account. Throughout im trying to come up with good images that may translate to film throughout the writing of the story. Who are the inspirations for your characters . Are they people you know . Who are you writing for . Its interesting. The latter part of that question is my most recent signing. I think the Age Range ran from 12, the youngest person at my event, to 102. So pretty much anyone, i think, who wants a good story. Wow. A lot of the characters have been inspired by people i know in my own life. A walk to remember was inspired by my sister and her battle with cancer. My Cousin Todd was a veteran. He served with pride and honorably discharged. After he got out, a lot of the people hed known in afghanistan and iraq, they committed suicide in the aftaftermath. I think the number is 22 veterans a day are committing suicide. He worked with them. It was just something i wanted to at least discuss a little bit. Tanner is among these survivors. How does one deal with something when the people you work with, love, trusted your life with have committed suicide . Tanner is a bit unsettled as he begins this story. The New Book, counting miracles is out now. Bestselling author Nicholas Sparks, thank you so much for coming on the show. Congratulations on the book, and thanks for being on. Hey, thank you for having me. This was fun. All right. Take care. Up next, acclaimed Filmmaker Ken burns is our guest as he is set to receive another prestigious Award Tonight in philadelphia. You will be protected and i will be your protector. Ew. No thank you. No thank you. We dont need that, any of that. Women like their rights and they like their access to Health Care and they like someone that tells the truth and doesnt consistently lie like that. Donald trump with those comments about women in a rally in pennsylvania Last Night. Welcome to the fourth hour of Morning Joe. Its 6 00 a. M. On the west coast, 9 00 a. M. In the east. Jonathan lemire is still with us. We want to get right to our first guest. Awardwinning Filmmaker Ken burns has said were at an existential crossroads in our political and civic lives, and has bluntly warned Donald Trump is the opioid of all opioids, a drug meant to alleviate pain whereby you end up reenslaved with an even bigger problem, a worse afflictiOn And a bigger delusion. This evening burns will be awarded with the 36th annual Liberty Medal by the national Constitution Center given to those who, quote, strive to restore the blessings of liberty around the globe. Lets get to Jeffrey Rosen in a moment. First, ken, you made those comments about trump back in may, before Kamala Harris became the democratic nominee. Where do you see the state of the race right now . And ill add you say Theres Nothing equal about this equation. Theres no real choice this november. Why . For all of the reasons you pointed out and the disturbing clip you started this segment with, you know, migrants commit far less crimes than regular citizens. Our cities have never been safer. The economy is booming. We have a robust sort of intelligence and foreign Policy Apparatus both parties, all of whom are supporting Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. Theres just kind of a makebelieve land. In the media, we tend to equalize things. We say, we want to uncover this about trump. We have to do the same thing about Kamala Harris. Theres just no equalization. I believe completely, as i did in may, theres an obvious choice to make this november in order to protect the liberties that we care about. You know, ken, we always ask our president ial historians and others if theres any parallel between the Challenges America faces right now with a second Donald Trump term. I want to get a little more specific with you here and be a little more objective. Can you think of any candidate in all the, the, the docs youve done and all the stories youve done and all the History Youve read and immersed yourself in your entire adult life where figures from the other party almost unanimously, it seems, people that ran well, lets just say Dick Cheney, Liz Cheney, Ken Addleman, alberto gonzalez, people who i will say, like me, before Donald Trump spent their adult life fighting for what they and what i consider to be conservative values, a balanced budget, right, responsible, rational government, letting local governments do what they can do and state governments do what they can do and the national government do what it has to do. A strong foreign i mean, we can go down this long laundry list. But are we really to be told that these whackos, insurrectionists and freakS Pushing crazy conspiracy theories are somehow the real conservatives and Dick Cheney and Liz Cheney are rinos . Does anybody really believe that in america . I dont know how we get to thiS Point where it has to be pointed out to almost half the population that the emperor has no clothes. This is unprecedented. We dont have a president ial candidate of this character or perhaps lack of character in our entire history. Youd have to go to people like aaron burr. I made a film in 1985 on the southern Demagogue Huey long. He made roads, bridges, he bought schoolbooks. Theres a difference between populism and its many manifestations in american history and meism, which is egocentrism. We do have a cast of characters. This is human nature. At this level, its completely unprecedented, which is why youre seeing so many people like my friend Ken Addleman whos written eloquently about why hes supporting Kamala Harris. You have Dick Cheney and bernie sanders voting for the same person, you know there is some threat that transcendS Party. Now is the time for all good people to come to the aid of their country and their party. The national Constitution Center was the venue for the debate between Donald Trump and Vice President harris just a few weeks ago. It struck many people that the constitution itself might be whats at stake this time around. Well, thats why its so meaningful to give the Liberty Medal to Ken Burns at the national Constitution Center on Independence Mall in philadelphia. You saw during the debate the sacred space, and were going to be gazing on independence hall. No one has done more than Ken Burns, americas storyteller, to inspire americans to learn about history so we can avoid the dangers of the past. Kens films inspire americans to lifelong learning and to the pursuit of happiness and to avoiding demagogues and the mob by embraing virtuous selfmastery. Its crucially important. The founders urged us to learn from the histories of failed republics of Greece And Rome to see how easy it is that we give our liberties in exchange to cesar on horseback, who promises the people cheap luxuries. Kens films, including the american Revolution Film thats going to air next year, are a crucial part of that education. Its going to be an extraordinary ceremony tonight, thanking ken for all hes taught americans about history and also heeding his warnings to learn about it so we can avoid repeating errors. I love The Way ken put it, that americans need to come to the aid of their country and not their party. Im wondering if there are living historic figures who need to step up, because this conversation were having, were having it with people who understand whats at stake. But there are some people who may need more of a Permission Structure. Well, i know youve talked about george w. Bush for quite some time. Yes, i have. If you look at Dick Cheney and people in his administration, alberto gonzalez, you look at people in 41s and 43s administration, a lot of reagan people, i mean, they are all lining up and even, i think most importantly, those people in Donald Trumps administration, those people who worked for Donald Trump have lined up and said he is not to be trusted again. Ken, i do want i do want and im so glad youre receiving this Award Tonight. Im so glad its an opportunity to talk about the constitution, and i will say the threat to madisonian democracy, the checks and balances against autocrats. One of the great mysteries to me is our founders foresaw a day that there had to be checks and balances against would be autocrats. But they never anticipated a compliant congress, the first branch that would lay down and let this Wouldbe Autocrat Trample over those checks and balances that james madison laid out. Youre absolutely right, joe. Its what makes this circumstance so unprecedented, is not just the Character Or Lack thereof of the candidate that were describing, but its also the willing executioners, the people who have subsumed their own political identity and beliefs in the service of im not exactly sure what. However, all of these anxieties were present. Jeff and i have been talking about this for months and months and months, you know, jeffersons writing to madison, you know, please what if somebody loses an electiOn And doesnt want to leave, and hamilton, who will end up essentially on the other party from Jefferson And Madison is going what if one scrupulouS Person rides the storm and reaps the whirlwind . Youve got everybody thinking about characters like this, who exist. Lets just look at the guys he admires in the World Today like Victor Orban and vladimir Putin And Xi and, you know, kim jongun. Youve got just every example of where we dont want to go. You know, democracy leaves toxic waste behind. There are losers in this situation, but its toxicity is so modest compared to every other experiment. People are always enticed, just follow me down this road to authoritarianism. I promise i will Take Care of you. The lead, mika, as we came in. Everybody who has ever tried this in history has not had a good outcome. And despite the many problems and pains of our system, which is imperfect thats our job, to make it more perfect it is still the best around. And dont mess with the recipe, because we know that everything else turns out worse. Mmhm. Emmy award winning Filmmaker And Recipient of the 2024 Liberty MedalKen Burns. And President And Ceo of the national Constitution CenterJeffrey Rosen. Thank you both very much for being on this morning. We really appreciate it. Thank you guys so much. You know, we were just talking about republicans who have lined up in every other administration supporting Kamala Harris, starting, again, with Dick Cheney, alberto gonzalez, going all The Way back to Ken Aidle Man. It is really impressive. The Harris Campaign is out with a new ad this morning talking about just that. Take a look. Bob and i both voted for Donald Trump. I voted for him twice. I wont vote for him again. January 6th was a Wakeup Call for me. Donald trump divideS People. Weve already seen what he has to bring. He didnt do anything to help us. Kamala harris, she cares about the american people. I think shes got the wherewithal to make a difference. Ive never voted for a democrat. Were both lifelong republics. The choice is simple. Im voting for kamala. Im voting for Kamala Harris. Im Kamala Harris, and i approve this message. Lets bring in correspondent Ashley Parker, member of the New York times Editorial Board Mara gave and rev reynold Al Sharpton is back with us as well. Effective ad. Youre right, a lot of people who have worked for previous republican administrations are stepping up for Kamala Harris. At thiS Point, for them, its like they want a Republican Party, and they dont have one right now. This is the route to getting one. Reverend al, it is remarkable. Just imagine, imagine democrats and, you know, that, that worked for a democratic candidate and every other democratic administration in recent memory, all supporting the republican candidate. Thats whats happening here, except its reversed. And yet there are still people desperately trying to pretend that an election that Dick Cheney, Liz Cheney, Ken Aidle Man and bernie sanders are all voting for the same candidate is somehow just like any other year. No. And i think that is why this new commercial and some of the last few days that the Vice President has reached out and said things gives a Comfort Level to many republicans that were true republicans and really believed what the Republican Party stood for, it gives them a Comfort Level to vote for her as a democrat running for president , because she has given them an environment of comfort more than their own nominee of the Republican Party. When you see a republican Party Nominee running around, you know, talking about windmills and giant faucets in the pacific and endorsing a black guy that calls himself a black nazi in North Carolina, it makeS People that were loyal republicans very uncomfortable. Well, and also the guy who blames, mika, blames the united states of america for Vladimir Putin invading ukraine, saying that hes going to get rid of nato, saying, hey, you know what, im going to encourage Vladimir Putin to invade every nato country, terminate the constitution, be a dictator from day one. These are all things he said. Yes, they are. He tries he tries to pull back from some of them, but theyre all out there. These are things hes said, but hes also said things and done them, so we have proof that he can follow through on these threats, for example, abortion. And now all the women in this country of all ages who dont have access to certain Health Care, could be livesaving Health Care because of trump. It doesnt matter what age you are. By The Way, you dont have to be a woman to care about the women in your life having Health Care that they should have a right to taken away. Of course, thats relevant, because Donald Trump is also saying he will be the greatest protector of womens reproductive rights. Youre going to belief him now . Im just saying he is flipflopping. He said he was going to balance the budget, said he was going to pay down the national debt, and then he got elected and, you know, as Jerry Baker says this morning in the Wall Street Journal, the deficit and the debt exploded at record rates under Donald Trump, and the next term will be even worse. Yeah. Ashley, your latest reporting for the Washington Post is entitled Donald Trumps imaginary and frightening world. You write, in Donald Trumps imaginary world americans Cant Venture out to buy a loaf of bread without getting shot or raped. Immigrants eat their neighbors cats and dogs. World war iii and economic collapse are just around the corner, and kids go off to school only to return at Days End having undergone genderconfirming surgery. It is a dark dystopian place described by trump to paint an alarming picture of america under the Biden Harris administration. It is a distorted, warped and at times absurdist portrait of a nation where the insurrectionists who stormed the capitol on January 6th 2021 to deadly effect were merely peaceful protesters and where unlucky voters are faced with a choice between electrocutiOn And a shark attack. His extreme caricatures also serve as another way for trump to traffic in lies and misinformation, using an alternate reality of his own making to create an often terrifying and he seems to hope politically devastating landscape for hiS Political opponent. And lets say, ashley, yes, he is doing this. And you can actually go back to his campaign in 2016, his successful campaign where he preached about the need to build the wall because an invasion of immigrants, illegal immigrants to the united states, when, in fact, immigration was at a 50year low, and crime was at a 50year low when Donald Trump gave his inaugural address about american carnage. So he makes it up. I guess the question is not just why he makes up this imaginary and frightening world, but why so many people believe the lies. Thats one of the fascinating things. You know, one voter we quote in that story and this gets back to his supporters taking him, as it turns out, both seriously and literally. He says these things, and one voter we talked to, on The One hand, theres certain things she believes. She believes the absolutely unverifiable claim that trump has been pushing that immigrants In Springfield, ohio, have been eating cats and dogs. She told us thats absolutely true, and its not. Then she points to something else. Little johnny gets sent to elementary school and comes home with Gender Reassignment confirming surgery. She says everybody exaggerates. Im not looking for a perfect president or a husband or spouse. I dont need to mary him. I just want him to keep us safe. He is creating this dystopian and terrifying world. In some cases his voters believe it. In other cases they dont believe it but theyre not punishing him for it. Theyre saying its an exaggeration, but i like what i see as strength. Ashley, Maura Gay from the New York times here. I wonder in the waning days of the campaign here weve seen Donald Trump doubling down on some of the really dark ideas that brought him to the dance to begin with back in 2016. I dont see that expanding his base. Can you talk a little bit about that juxtaposition . How strategic is this world that hes creating for us . Or is this just where hes comfortable . Is thiS Politically strategic . Who is this appealing to . So youre right. Its something his base likes. It doesnt necessarily tremendously expand his base. And thats always been the thing about Donald Trump, right . On The One hand, he has a floor that is enviable for a lot of politicians that he will not fall below. He has a Core Group of supporters that no matter what he says or does will not desert him. The flip side is because of his behavior, because of his comments, because of his lies, mistruths, racist, sexist areas hes dabbled in, he also has a very low ceiling that it is very hard for him to rise above. In certain ways and his team iS Pretty clear about this for him to win this election, he will have to drag Vice President harris down sort of to his level below his ceiling. And in certain ways this imaginary world, if you believe it to be true, is a terrifying one that hes claiming Vice President harris and her Running Mate would usher in. So in that sense, it is strategic. All right. The Washington Posts Ashley Parker, thank you very much. Greatly appreciate it. Thank you, ashley. Jonathan lemire, i want to follow up on what ashley said about selfidentified maga voters believe and how far theyre willing to go to support Donald Trump and and and buy into this false, Dystopian View of america that was a lie when he first ran. Again, i will say again and these stats were up during the Trump Administration. Illegal immigration, people crossing the mexican border at a 50year low when Donald Trump entered office, and its spiked. And its continued to spike, and now its back down actually below the level, some reports say, of where it was when Donald Trump waS President. Um, but the the the obsession with all Things Trump i noticed early on happens where Vladimir Putins approval ratings started to jump among republicans when Donald Trump got into office. Theres a Vanderbilt Poll just last year in 2023. Selfidentified maga voters, people who say, yes, im a maga voter, 52 of them said that Vladimir Putin yeah, 52 said Vladimir Putin was a better president than Joe Biden. Only 19 of Selfidd Maga voters said Joe Biden was a better president than Vladimir Putin. If you want to see how this one man has so corroded americaS Political discourse and how his followers are cheerfully going along with it, thiS Poll is a great place to start. And and and suggests that maybe this is why his apologists and the media, his apologists that actually, on his ticket are basically saying, yeah, throw ukraine overboard, let Vladimir Putin go all The Way to kyiv. Were going to end this war the second Donald Trump is reelected. Such a vivid example, these maga republicans, this is the party that once was cold warriors, hawks on russia, and now say they support Vladimir Putin, a murderous dictator, who of course, has invaded other countries because Donald Trump speaks kindly of. Its only accelerated. His Inauguration Speech where he said i alone can fix the nationS Problems, but more than that he has said on more than one occasion, dont believe anything unless i tell you. That is the hallmark of an autocrat, that is the hallmark of someone who uses Disinformation And Misinformation to hold On And consolidate power. Thats what were seeing here, his followers only get their news from him, from his source around his conservative media, which acts as an echo chamber. Where facts do not apply, it is simply an alternate reality. If they encounter one, they simply believe its not true and maybe even treasonous. Its a very, very dangerous combination. Yeah. Its a dangerous time. Coming up on Morning Joe, Donald Trump threatened the worlds largest factory of Farm Machinery with a 200 Tariff Yesterday if they move production to factories in mexico. This came after the former president gave u. S. Automakers a similar ultimatum. Plus, one of the heads of the largest banks believes geopolitics is getting worse. I just noticed behind me John Deere tractors. I know a lot about the campaign. As you know, they announced a few days ago theyre going to move a lot of their Manufacturing Business to mexico. Im notifying John Deere right now, if you do that, were putting a 200 tariff on everything that you want to sell into the united states. Former President Trump in Pennsylvania Yesterday threatening the agricultural manufacturer John Deere with massive tariffs over a potential Production Move to mexico. Lets bring in the coanchor of Cnbcs Squawk Box andrew Ross Sorkin. Its a lot like 2015 and 2016 where Donald Trump makes all these threats, saying hes going to do this, going to do that, hes going to stop manufacturing from going out of the united states. In fact, hiS Promises just werent fulfilled. The manufacturing continued. It seems his answer to everything, everything now is tariffs, from Child Care to trade to whatever. That is his economic policy that, i guess, im sorry to bring your name up again, but stevens and so many other people are so enamored that Donald Trump has laid out hiS Policy and Kamala Harris hasnt, when, in fact, the opposite is true. Were talking about a tariff on an american company, a legendary american company, mark cuban calling this insane, if you will. I think it goes to the point of what the Business Community and companies across the country are supposed to think. This goes to this whole idea of are you going to wake up in a Trump Administration every morning with a new tweet or a new idea attacking your business . Theres the other piece of it, which is the actual Merit Or Lack of merit for tariffs and the effective tax that is going to put on farmers across the country. I think thats the big questiOn And big issue here, which is, we talked about it over and over again, tariffs are attacks on the american people. In thiS Particular case, its a tax on farmers. The question as you try to balance these things, would you prefer to have a certain number of workers manufacturing John Deere tractors in the u. S. Versus a Price Tag that will be much, much higher for people who are trying to farm their land. Thats the questiOn And thats the balance, and thats, i think, how people need to at least try to think about the issue. The thing is for conservatives, for economic conservatives, for, im sure, the Wall Street JournalEditorial Page, for most of the ceos you talk to, they would say this is this is actually taking a bad situatiOn And making it worse. Industrial policy, yes. Its industrial policy. Youre actually distorting the free market. Youre slapping the invisible hand, and youre saying, no, you must create thiS Product here, even though its going to cost you more, right . Right. And then if they actually go somewhere where they can make a product, again, which conservatives have always supported this, you know, the best use, best economic use, then youre going to punish farmers and a 200 tariff on the tractors that they buy . Again, that is that is industrial policy at its worst, and there is nothing conservative about it. Look, i think we all would like as much manufacturing happening in the u. S. As humanly possible. I dont think anybody would disagree about that. I think the real question is how do you intent that and what the right programs are for that. I think programs across the board are very difficult, but singling out companies in this way, talk about creating chaos in the marketplace, creating chaos in the markets. Thats what haS People nervous. Andrew, Jp Morgan Ceo jamie dimon says geopolitics are getting worse. Go. Talk about nervousness, i think youre hearing from Jamie Diamond referencing whats happening now in the Middle East. The big question, of course, theres an escalation between israel and iran. Thats something we need to become concerned about, and its something thats not factored into the markets. Investors are not focused on that. I think you layer on ukraine and you layer on what play be the ultimate outcome of the election here in the u. S. And its implication on those issues, and we are in a place, as jamie dimon said, is not unprecedented, but is very close to one of the riskier times in our history. I think one of the things hes trying to say both to policy leaders and to folks who are invested in the markets is to say, you know, should we be paying attention to issues and consider these risks in a way they do not seem to be on the front Burner Or Front table . We talk about them, obviously, but you look at the Stock Market reaching an alltime high, and it would appear that No Ones even recognizing these things are happening. Again, i mean, again, all this talk about, oh, Biden Harris are socialists. Are they really . Thats fascinating, because, again, as you said, and heres the headline, dow rides to fresh record as Wall Street builds on september gains. If you thought the markets were going to be unhappy about where this election was going, they would be in a very different place. Yeah, exactly. Andrew Ross Sorkin, thank you very much for being on this morning. So the latest Nbc News national poll shows Kamala Harris with a Fivepoint Lead over trump, but within the margin of error. It also shows room to grow for the Vice President s campaign, particularly with the latino community. Harris has support from 54 of latino voterS Polled, significantly lower than the support Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton received in their matchups against trump. The rightward shift of latino voters in recent years is one of the topics discussed in the New Book entitled defectors, the rise of the latino far right and what it means for america. The Books Author Paola ramos joins us. Thank you very much for coming on. Congratulations on the book. Can you talk about this trend to the right by latinos . Ill start by stating the obvious. The case will never be that Donald Trump will win the latino vote. Democrats will continue to win that vote. But i do think we have to be alarmed by the fact that someone like Donald Trump can even get close to 39 . You dig into the Battleground States of arizona, you see shes up 41 , so we should be alarmed at the idea that someone that iS Promising Mass Deportations, someone that haS Promised to be a dictator on day one, someone thats flirting with authoritarianism is doing so well with latino voters, a bloc that for the democratic party is supposed to be the heart, of the theory of change, this idea that latinos would be at the heart of the multiethnic, multiracial coalition. So the book essentially attempts to understand whats at the heart of that. Why is there a small but growing group of latino voters that is finding something attractive in trumpism, that is finding something appealing in the far right . The hard part of the book is i realized through the journey is that it has less to do about Trumpism And Maga and more to do with the things that are uncomfortable to talk about, such as, the racial baggage that people carry. It also has to do with something Joe Talks about all the time, which is, the political trauma. What does it mean to flee from communism, and what does it mean to have a very complicated relationship with authoritarianism . All of that together when you think of sort of how that plays out in american politics, its not black or white. Its complicated. It really is. Its such a great point, because if youre fleeing from cuba, if youre fleeing from venezuela, if youre fleeing from nicaragua and you have one side talks about communists, communists, communists, theyre communists. I saw a Rick Scott Ad saying his opponent is communist. Everybodys a communist. Well, wait a second, they want to increase marginal tax rates by. 2 . Theyre communists. That actually, if theres not a pushback on everybody in the democratic party is a communist, it will gain traction among latino voters that fled communist countries or countries where there were dictators. Joe, Thats Something that republicans are really good at. They know how to manipulate the meaning of words. Were at a point right now where the Vice President is being called a communist, where obamacare was considered social inch, where migrants and asylum seekers are now considered criminals. Thats something they do time and time again. After the 2020 election, the majority of latinos believed that democrats were more prone of sort of turning into communist than they believed republicans were more prone to turn into a fascist government. That in and of itself tells you sort of the degree in which republicans are good at manipulating and exploiting real political trauma. You mentioned the uncomfortable part, talking about the uncomfortable part about the dynamics of race in south america and here in the united states. Could you talk a little bit you say in your book that there is a very large appeal among hispanic voters, that theyre very attracted or the majority of them are attracted to christian nationalism. I might make the implication from there to whiteness. Can you talk a little bit about that . And what should be done about that not just for democrats but for those who support democracy and want hispanic voters in that coalition . So even when you think about trumps antiimmigrant rhetoric or christian nationalism or even The Way he uses antiblackness, we need to understand that trumpism has the ability to tap into a sort of racial and ethnic grievance that is familiar for latinos. Its a very brief history lesson. In the 15th century when the Spanish Colonizers they invent a sort of caste system. That gave place to racial missing. It creates thiS Permission struck for all of us, all latinos, regardless of race, background or ethnicity, to always draw a direct line to whiteness, to the Spanish Colonizers. Many latinos under the guise of being hispanic opt for whiteness, particularly in a country that has such a deep and dark history of antiblackness. So that is why you couple this sort of internalized racism that a lot of us carry, you couple that with the antiimmigrant rhetoric that is so vile and visceral in this country, and that turns into a growing number of latinos warming up to the idea of Mass Deportations because they can otherize. They are warming up to the idea of christian nationalism. 50 of latino evangelicals believe in christian nationalism. So much of that has to do with a very basic idea that because were latino does not make us immune to otherizing. I know you and i talk about it all the time, but there is sometimes, there is a divide between black voters and latino voters. There is sort of like a choice. And democrats talk about this. If theyre talking about which direction to go so there is this friction, and im so glad were talking about this right now. Its the same thing with some black voters, some latino voters on social issues are closer to republicans. Latino voters, theres a good number that have had problems with Marriage Equality. I go back to 2008 when Barack Obama won in a massive landslide, won in california in a massive landslide. It was black voters and latino voters that helped kill the Marriage Equality amendment that was on Californias Ballot at the time, and liberals were shocked and oh my god. I bring this up because this is something this back actually talks about, and its something democrats need to confront if they want to have a winning message moving forward. They have to at least recognize the political realities that a lot of people dont want to talk about. No. I think its important that they recognize the political realities, and i think Paolas Book is important to that. One, in some segments, large segments of the latino community, theyre very conservative in terms of their religion, pentecostal churches. If you dont address that, youre not talking about were condoning certainly behavior. If you dont talk about that, you miss them all together. I grew up in the pentecostal church. Im baptist now, so i understand that. You have people in the democratic party which doesnt understand the culture of that. Secondly, you Cant Lump it together, as alluded to black and brown, because there needs to be more outreach between certain communities for political alliances. I was talking about how many years ago we protested the navy bombers in Puerto Rico. I purposely went because latino leaders were protesting a Police Shooting in New York. I said im going to Puerto Rico to participate in a civil disobedience and nonviolent with Puerto Rico leaders, and we did. We were arrested. I got the worse end of the stick. The Puerto Rico leaders got 40 days in jail. I got 90 days in jail. The coalition didnt work out. But, rev, thats when your diet started. Come on, you have said you came out trim and ready to fight. But they didnt join me in there. But anyway, i think we cannot assume because people link us together that its just that easy. Thats why your book is that important. Thank you, rev. Thank you. Absolutely. Talk about that. Do you agree with rev there . Absolutely, yeah. I mean, i think one of the interesting things i find throughout the book in different characters, i interview the proud boys and insurrectionists. There comes a point in their journey where they recognize how tenuous white power was. They look back and realize they truly werent welcomed in those spaces. In 2020, obviously when Donald Trump loses, one of the first things the proud boys do is distance themselves from enrique tario. Latinos need to define themselves as americans on their own terms, not in terms of whiteness or the democratic party. Now this is why this moment is so beautiful. Were seeing a new reiteration of the latino bloc that is more diverse, more powerful, and we dont know what that looks like, and thats okay. The New Book defectors, the rise of the Latino Right is on sale now. Paola ramos, thank you. Congratulations on the book, and thank you so much for coming on the show this morning. Were going to take a look at the new Fx ShowComing Up grotesqueri about a small community. One of the stars of the Show Courtney b. Vance is live in studio to discuss his role. And were keeping an eye on the u. N. General assembly in New York city, where President Biden is set to speak this morning. It will be one of his final addresses to world leaders aS President. He is scheduled to start shortly after the top of the hour. Weve got our eye on that. Were back in just a moment. T o. Were back in just a moment. Evil has always existed. Detective, to understand this killer, you must reach the ecstatic. You are an odd little bird for a nun. Something is after us. Go people want evil. We need to catch this monster. That was a look at the new Fx Drama Grotesquerie written and created by sixtime Emmy Winner Ryan murphy. The ten Episode Drama which premieres Tomorrow Night is centered around a small town that falls victim to a series of unexplained crimes. And the detectives looking to put the case and her own personal demons to rest. Joining us now is one of the stars, and executive producer of the show, courtney b. Vance. Good to have you on the show. This looks i mean, grotesque, would that be a compliment . Apt description, yes. Okay. For what she for what miss niecy has to do, the detective, and her Family Unit is very grotesque, yes. We need to do better. Youll take that. Okay. So, because a lot of the plot is being kept under wraps, we got a little bit here, but tell us who is your character and a little bit more. I am niecy nashs husband, and we have a daughter who is dealing with an eating disorder. She is very large and she wants to be larger to be on a Reality Show and i, as you can see, i am in a coma at the beginning of the show. But we flash back and see some about who i am and what im about. But niecy is trying to solve this these series of murders and she could she really would love it if her House Home Life was a little better, but it aint. So much of this show as mika noted is under wraps. We do know something of the cast list. One name really jumps out, travis kelce. Yes. The Kansas City Chiefs what . Eventual hall of fame tight end. That caught mikas attention. Hall of fame tight end as well as taylor swifts boyfriend, what can you tell us about even if you cant say much about his role, what that experience was like . This is the first time hes done anything like this. All i can say is i was on the set with him, and my man is ready. And we had a wonderful time and it is going to be a wonderful surprise for everyone to see how accomplished he is. So, courtney, we actually began the hour talking a little bit about kind of the dark world that Donald Trump has created for some of his voters. Of course, crime is at lows across much of the country. Can you talk a little bit about the inspiration maybe for this . This is this is a very personal experience for mr. Ryan murphy. We did press all Day Yesterday and he was he revealed this is his baby, and it is very, very exciting. We saw there was a premiere Last Night, and im in the show. And im in awe of what is happening, of what the completeness of the experience. So, i am very excited for folks to see, to witness, it will be two episodes tomorrow evening, at 10 00. Let me ask you this, courtney. I know were not we are not giving away the whole plot. But is niecys character more motivated by her own demons, which was alluded to all by her profession . What are we dealing with in exchange of both . I think were dealing with an exchange of both. Because of what she has thiS Person obviously is targeting her with these series of murders. It iS Personal. And so she is shes got inner demons shes dealing with, and on top of that, she is this is happening. This is has happened to her. And shes got to deal with that and then come home and deal with us. So it is an examination for all of us to look at, you know, our family life, because im sure there will be subsidiary things for us to talk about, mental wellness and eating disorders and drinking disorders and all a host of sexual addictions and a whole host of things to talk about. Okay grotesquerie premieres Tomorrow Night at 10 00 eastern on fx and is available to stream the following day on hulu. Twotime Emmy Winner Courtney b. Vance, thank you very much for being on the show today. Good luck with that. It looks gross. It is very gross, yes. Congratulations. Okay, that does it for us this morning.
