Reports, escalation in the Middle East. A new bombardment of israeli strikes against hezbollah targets in lebanon and an unprecedented warning to civilians. The fears its stoking of a larger regional war. Plus disturbing new evidence tied to the suspect in that apparent second Assassination Attempt of Donald Trump, including a letter where he appears to confess to the plot. What it means for his case when he face has judge next hour. And new Nbc Polling on the 2024 race showing a historic surge in favorability for Vice President harris. We will look at whats driving that and why this contest is still neck and neck. Good morning and thanks for joining us, it is 10 00 a. M. Eastern, 7 00 a. M. Pacific, im Ana Cabrera reporting from New York. We begin with the Breaking News in the Middle East. Lebanese officials say more than 180 people have been killed after intensifying israeli strikes there overnight. The idf Issuing A first of its kind Evacuation Warning to civilians in Southern Lebanon, warning them to get away from hezbollah targets before more precise and extensive strikes. This is the latest in a series of escalations, raising fears that this conflict could spill into a much wider war. Here is President Biden on that threat. Are you worried about rising tensions on the Middle East . Yes, i am, but were going to do everything we can to keep a wider war from breaking out and were still pushing hard. Lets bring in Nbc News chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel in haifa, israel. Also with us a former green beret, Jason Beardsly and former State Department senior advisor my era hawk. Richard, lebanese authorities say 182 people have been killed in these strikes, weve seen the numbers continue to go up over the course of the morning here. How much of an escalation with these strikes from what weve seen previously . Reporter were seeing a dramatic escalation and it began last week with the attacks that targeted thousands of hezbollah operatives pagers and then walkietalkies and an attack that could only have been carried out by israel and now prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is sort of hinting that israel was responsible although Israel Hasnt officially accepted responsibility, prime Minister Netanyahu said that hezbollah understood israels capabilities with an attack that it hadnt expected and if it didnt get the message, it will get the message, im paraphrasing, but thats what netanyahu was saying. Clearly suggesting that israel was behind that attack on the Command And Control structure. And then after that since yesterday and then all Day Today so far there have been strikes, rolling strikes, on what are being described as hezbollah military sites, sites where rockets are launched, a site that was used according to the israeli military to launch a cruise missile. And it seems that israel is trying to first take out the hezbollah communication network, then there was a strike on beirut, that apparently targeted and you may have just heard an explosion and a second one here, and a third a series of explosions now that are consistent with Israels Iron Dome system. Actually, it is the Iron Dome System if you look behind me, it might be difficult to see with the contrast here is very bright were outside and its a little darker where i am, but you can see the puffs of smoke in the air. Clearly israel is firing at something with fairly intense volleys of the Iron Dome System. Its unclear if these are incoming missiles or more likely drones because i didnt hear any incoming fire. We are in the city of haifa, which is in northern israel. This is a city that hezbollah has said it intends to target, it wants to target. Were right by the port in haifa, which is a target that the that hezbollah has indicated it is something of interest to hezbollah. So we are definitely seeing this conflict moving into northern israel. So it is not just the israelis are attacking mostly Southern Lebanon but also the bekka valley. This is a dramatic escalation. Will this spill into a fullon regional war, a Fullon Ground War . I think that depends on what hezbollah does over the next several days, but we are certainly seeing an escalation here and a war between Hezbollah And Israel is under way without a doubt. Well, please stay safe, richard, and thank you for bringing us the very latest. Keep us posted as we go throughout this hour. And as richard mentioned, jason, theres been now an exchange of these strikes. Were hearing about the strikes happening in Southern Lebanon and then were seeing with our own eyes this morning some return strikes it sounds like coming from lebanon into israel. We know over the Weekend Hezbollah launched 150 rockets, missiles, drones at israel, most of those were captured by the iron dome, a few resulted in some shrapnel wounds of a few civilians, but now we have this first of a kind warning from israel to lebanese civilians to get out. What does that suggest to you about the scope of these strikes . Well, it really is suggestive that their intent here is very clear. They have established the groundwork for decapitating the leadership of Hezbollah And Theyve done that through successive covert actions and now they are using overt actions to tell the population if you are in these areas hiding nested Ammunition Dee boths or in the vicinity of hezbollah targets this is the time to leave that area. The host populations of these societies do not necessarily want to be part of this escalation so israel is attempting to say this is the time to leave because the strooiks are going to continue. A lot of the ammunition, the equipment that is used to launch rockets into northern israel is done in this southern lebanese area, theres a lot of mountains and regions for them to hide this stuff, but a lot of times they will colocate ammunition by civilian targets, under schools or near hospitals and this, then, drives a wedge between hezbollah and the population. Thats part of what israel is saying. So its a very purposeful part of the psychological operation that israel is laying down in front of what were likely to see over the next escalation days, if you will. The u. S. And other allies have been calling for deescalation frankly for months now, here was national Security Spokesman John Kirby just this weekend. We dont believe that a Military Conflict and were saying this directly to our israeli counterparts, george we dont believe that escalating this Military Conflict is in their best interest. Its certainly not going to be in the best interests of all those people that prime minister says he wants to be able to send back home. President biden and netanyahu are among the dozens of leaders here in New York attending the general assembly this week. Could that Inperson Diplomacy Help that message we just heard get through . Well, that would assume that netanyahu actually valued the perspective of the united states to the degree that we would hope given united states support for israeli defense. What we have seen over the course of the last year as israel continues to intensify In Gaza and the West Bank and in lebanon is that netanyahu has an agenda of in his perspective getting rid of the Terrorist Groups that have threatened israel for decades and doing so by being very aggressive and forwardleaning, despite warnings from allies that they have limits. We have not seen what that limit would look like for the united states and biden and others have continued to say they will come to the defense of Israel But Netanyahus actions raise that big question of what does that defense of israel look like when israel is the one being the aggressor . And thats going to fundamentally be the challenge here, particularly when it comes to Israel Warning another country to evacuate civilians. Now, ostensibly that is to, as my colleague said, to drive that psychological wedge, but also israel giving itself cover to say that the civilian casualties that may happen should not have happened because people were told to go, to leave. Where are people supposed to go . Right . The increasing Refugee Crisis is a global challenge being discussed at the united nation this is week and now we have an increasing Refugee Crisis on israels borders as well. Jason, Hezbollahs Deputy Chief says they are now in a phase of openended reckoning and im wondering as weve spent all these months covering more specifically the war against hamas In Gaza, how would a war with hezbollah compare to Twha Weve seen In Gaza . Well, it can a compares in different ways. Hamas in Gaza Thats very urban terrain, a lot of combat that is very difficult to do. Whats different about hezbollah and i think its very important to understand i represent veterans concerned veterans for america. We have american soldiers in Iraq And Syria that are nestled among the populations that are being fronted by Popular Mobilization forces that are run out of iran. These are proxies that have a beef or a grind with the west and so our soldiers right now on the ground are vulnerable there and i think the president , i think the White House can do a little bit better by giving advantage to the United States Military troops that are in harms way. The actual war that might happen with or thats ongoing between Israel And Hezbollah is playing out in the manner youre seeing. A lot of covert action, a lot of overt action, but what ends up happening is, as our colleague also mentioned, is that the populations here are being harassed, both by the hezbollah and by the rockets, the incoming fire from israel. So there has to be a decision made by people who are hosting these hezbollah Terror Networks on how far theyre willing to abide by this Back And Forth that weve seen for years. I think its worth noting that israel did a lot of work to try to target selectively hezbollah leaders, we saw Ebrahim Akeel finally killed, responsible for 243 marines that were killed in beirut in 93. So this is Part And Parcel of a long, enduring campaign, but the problem with going after hezbollah proper is they have networks in yemen, they have them in israel, they have them in syria, they have them in iraq, they have them of course in lebanon. So these have to be carefully conducted. Thats part of what youre seeing. If israel can take out the Ammunition Depots they reduce the risk for people in haifa. Another big Development Weve been watching for is the israeli military is looking into reports that the lead of hamas Yahya Sinwar was killed in a recent israeli strike. Nothing is confirmed, but if sinwar has been killed what do you see as the potential impact on the Israelhamas War In Gaza . Hamas already lost their political leader who was one of the key negotiators, he was taken out in an israeli strike in iran and now you have Yahya Sinwar who was the new leader but also considered their merchant of death. These are individuals who have not brought good on to the world, but hamas is not a solo operation, neither is hezbollah. Iran is a big piece of this equation and truly no one in the western world wants to see iran actively involved in a direct conflict in the Middle East. So far its that idea that iran has proxies in these two Terrorist Organizations and there are targeted strikes that have been used to decimate those organizations, but the question is is this escalation by israel into lebanon going to prompt iran to be more provocative as well. Thank you both very much for joining us. We appreciate it. Coming up, a historic shift in our new Nbc News Poll. What it signals about the race for the White House. Also, i will talk with the mayor of springfield, ohio, a republican, pushing back on the baseless conspiracy involving haitian migrants and pets. We are back with Breaking News. We just got new information about that second apparent Assassination Attempt against Donald Trump last week in florida. New court Documents Detail how 58yearold Ryan Routh allegedly tracked the former president s movements in the weeks before he was caught on trumps Golf Course. Now, were also learning of new evidence that appears to show routh confessed to an Assassination Plot in a letter. He is expected back in court in just the next hour for a bond hearing. Nbcs Tom Winters with more on all of this. What you can us through what we know about this apparent confession, tom. Right. So i dont think anybody thought that Ryan Routh showed up at the trump Golf Course with a semiautomatic rifle that sunday a little over a week ago because he was going quail hunting. I think a lot of folks thought this is somebody who is clearly going after trump. The fbi said that in calling it an apparent Assassination Attempt but we hadnt yet seen any sort of indication of exact and specific motive. We knew some of his prior political thoughts, thanks to Social Media and the things he said. Now today federal prosecutors say that approximately a month before this shooting he allegedly left behind a box of documents at a Friends House and once this incident came out, once he was shot at by Secret Service and taken into custody, he writes in this letter that he has a number of different items in it, phones, billing materials, a metal pipe, ammunition but then he writes that hes sorry that he let in essence let people down for a failed Assassination Attempt on Donald Trump. Now, thats before he does this so how did he know he was going to fail and theres all sorts of questions that come from there, but Bottom Line is it appears clear if we are to believe federal prosecutors and the evidence they say they found in the documents that they have now shown us that this was definitely some sort of an indication of a possible Assassination Plot to your point. So thats one of the things theyre presenting to the judge and its the reason why this is coming out. They want to keep him behind bars pending this trial because they want to continue this investigation, obviously they found a lot. Theyve also found there were apparently four Cell Phones found in his vehicle at the time of his arrest. We are looking at the body worn camera of that. They tracked down through tmobile on this particular instance where he was prior. It includes on several different occasions apparently he was at maralago or other trump properties in the Palm Beach area. So this was not the first time he thought to go there and even may have had some lists of prior known locations where former President Trump would be. You are looking at some of the information from the court filings referencing exactly what i just said. So all told theyre putting together a lot of information, theyre not yet calling it an apparent Assassination Attempt and because Donald Trump is neither the president nor the President Elect he cant be charged with an attempted assassination under federal law but obviously they are probably looking at additional charges. What other additional charges, then . Right now he is just being held on these weapons charges, right . Thats right. So perhaps looking at the totality of the documents and either things that he may have written, and were getting probably only a percentage of a percentage, if there are other things in there that indicate hes transmitted some sort of an interstate threat or made threats prior, those are the types of things that could be added to it. Theres probably evidence that were not yet aware of, perhaps hes left boxes or letters with other individuals and even the fbi is not aware of that information yet. So i think those are the types of things that we will continue to hear as this case goes forward. Thank you very much, tom winter. Now to alabama where an urgent manhunt is under way. Police say multiple gunmen carried out what they believe was a targeted attack Saturday Night in birmingham and officials are giving an update right now, were monitoring this. So far we know four people were killed, at least 17 others injured just after 11 00 p. M. When a vehicle pulled up outside a popular lounge and then several shooters opened fire. The Police Chief is asking the Birmingham Community for help in identifying the gunmen. Nbcs Marissa Par is tracking all this have for us. What are we learning about what happened and where this manhunt stands right now . So that Press Conference is happening right now and of course i will give you an update as soon as i can get a chance to listen to what is happening right now. As of a few minutes ago we understand this happened just after 11 00 p. M. On Saturday Night. You mentioned four people killed, at least 17 others injured. I want to show you some of the people, the people were learning about, the victims here, were talking about anitra hollowman, tajh booker, Carlos Mccain and roderick lynn patterson. Now, as you mentioned they do believe, police believe the shooting was targeted, they also believe there were multiple shooters. I want to take you to what we are hearing from witness on the ground including one man who said he was at a nearby bar with friends. The shots kept firing, and fast, rapid, and then you hear and theres one on the ground, were getting everybody in. Didnt know what was going on, had never been in that situation. There was Mass Panic for a moment. It was just the shock of that neighboring in our neighborhood. That doesnt happen every day. Ana, as we mentioned, that Press Conference is happening right now, im seeing notes from one of our producers, it sounds like the search is ongoing for what they believe to be multiple shooters. We mentioned 17 people at least injured and from our notes at least 12 of those victims have been released, five of them are still in the Hospital And Police it sounds like are announcing new rewards for information from locals. Ana, i will point out they discovered 100 different Shell Casings so they do believe an Automatic Weapon was used in this instance. Marissa parra, thank you. We will keep monitoring the presser. Up next, a new Nbc News Poll showing a tight race for the White House, what the data means for Vp Harris and former President Trump. In the 2024 race the Kamala Harris honeymoon is apparently not over. New Nbc Polling shows the Vice President with momentum. She is narrowly ahead of former President Trump nationally, 49 to 44 among registered voters right now. This is the first time trump has trailed in our Nbc News Poll since july 2023. Clearly a reshaped race since President Biden dropped out, but in other ways its the same race, one Thats Razor thin and will come down to a handful of Battle Grounds like pennsylvania. Trump has two events there today, Vice President harris will stop in pennsylvania on wednesday. Here to break down this new Polling Nbc News national political correspondent Steve Kornacki at the big board. Also with us former Clinton Campaign official Arlene Na Maxwell and former Press Secretary to republican house Speakers Boehner and ryan, brendan buck. Steve, i want to start with you, lots going on in the polls. Break it down, this is the snapshot but whats the story its telling. Lets Take A Look inside of what you see here. 4944 overall national, thats the number from our new poll here. One component of this is a Gender Gap. Were familiar with Gender Gaps, its been a feature of American Politics since 1980, but this if anything like this actually is what plays out on election day, it would kind of be off the charts as far as Gender Gaps go. Among Men Trump is leading harris by 12 points, 5240, among women, harris look at the margin shes running in our poll, 21 points for harris among women. That would be a Gender Gap of 33 points, a 33point Difference there. Again, we saw in 2020 and in to 16 historically high Gender Gaps, talking about 20 points, low 20s. If you were ever to get anywhere near this, again, that would be off the charts. Now, its one poll here, well see if this is something you see continuously through now and election day, but certainly a Gender Gap is a feature of this. Take a look by race, trump leading among white voters by nine points but i think this is the most interesting finding here among black voters harris leading in our poll 85 to 7 . Thats significant because in previous polling among black Voters Trump had been faring a little better, ana. When we talk about Pfeiffer Ability that one was a big hmmm. Talk to us about that. We look at the next screen. Harris right now with a positive rating of 48 , the key here is she was at 32 when we first polled this in july. So from july to now in two months shes gone from 32 to 48 positive rating. You see thats the highest number of any of the candidates here and you see trump hes sort of struck where hes pretty much generally been, 40 positive, 53 negative. So image for Kamala Harris has improved since she got in this race and that has tracked with those poll numbers. Steve kornacki, thank you. I want to pick up where steve left off. Eye popping to see that favorability, 16point Jump for the Vice President , the chargeest bump in Nbc Polling at least since President Bush after 9 11. What do you think is behind that and whats made the difference . Well, i think that voters the more that they learn about Kamala Harris the more that shes on the Campaign Trail and obviously her strong debate performance, the more they like what they hear, the more they like the Vice President. I think that her favorability ratings were so closely tied to the president s favorability ratings that she didnt have an opportunity, as she does now as the candidate, to show the american public who she is. I think that Shes Somebody who was wellprepared to campaign across the country and present a clear and concise message for what she wants to do and where she wants to bring the country. So shes been working on the ground to build a Kamala Harris coalition, theres a lot of talk about that i think a Kamala Harris coalition includes Gen Z, millennials, the Gen Xers who raised those radically progressive Gen Z children and young adults and boomers and republicans and independents who no longer are willing to vote for Donald Trump. So were going to see a little bit of a new coalition. Yes, there is a Gender Gap but i should remind all the folks at home listening that that Gender Gap is basically black and brown women who are overrepresented in terms of voting for and supporting democrats and Kamala Harris. White women historically have voted for the republican, ana. And there is also some, you know, evidence that trump is still leading on the economy and immigration, on some of the issues that voters have said are their top issues. You also have this new polling in the Sun Belt from the New York times showing trump ahead within the margin of error in arizona, georgia and north carolina, but this stood out to me, 44 of the likely voters said america is in danger of failing as a nation and the times adds this context, polls found that voters in this part of the country were worried about their own future and the future of the nation suggesting that mr. Trumps dark campaign rhetoric, our country is being lost, they are a failing nation that he said in the debate could be resonating with some voters. Brendan, what do you think about that . Is trumps dark messaging connecting with people . Well, theres evidence of that in our own poll as well. We always ask do you think the country is on the right track or the wrong track and only 28 of the country right now thinks the country is on the right track. Thats a really low number, its actually up a little bit than it has been in recent months but thats, i think, the ultimate problem that Kamala Harris needs to overcome. Most people dont like the direction the country is headed and she is part of the incumbent party. Now, she has done an incredible job of presenting herself as the challenger in this race despite being in the White House currently and that is, i think, probably the most important finding from our poll is that she is representing change in a way that we have not seen in other polls. Donald trump just by his nature comes across as a disrupter, as a change agent. People want to go in a different direction and i think thats why she has really distanced herself not in a meanspirited way but said im different than joe biden, im a new fresh type of democrat because i think she understands its hard to win over the country if they think theyre heading in the wrong direction. The difference she got 47 saying she represents change to trumps 38 . Lets talk about the debate over the second debate. Vp harris signed up for a rematch, trump has not accepted and now the dnc were learning is set to call trump a chicken with billboards, each a staffer dressed as a chicken who will appear at trumps Campaign Events coming up. As a former campaign media staffer, your thoughts on this approach . Look, i think that the Harris Campaign is its funny, obviously, to have someone dressed up as a chicken, but theyre smart to call for a second debate. Obviously the Vice President did very well in that debate and at a debate you have i think 67 Million people tuned into that last debate, you would have the largest audience really possible at the same time being able to hear the campaigns message. So thats why theyre asking for this debate. But in my opinion she doesnt need to have a second debate. I think that youre now in the homestretch of the campaign and to brendans point i do think that there is a lot of truth to this idea that shes trying to distance herself from the president in terms of demonstrating that she is the change candidate, but i also would say she is the change candidate. We have never had a Woman President in the history of this country, but there are a lot of Hillary Clinton alumni on this campaign that understand that even though they are up in the polls right now you cannot rely on that. Hillary clinton was up in the polls. You have to run up the early Vote Talley and then run through the tape. So a debate or no debate, doesnt matter. Shes going to do well at a second debate if they have it. If they dont have it they have to focus on the on the ground strategy. Brendan, what do you think about a second debate, will it happen . Its not without risk for the Harris Campaign. I get the sort of trash talking, i dont care for, it but i understand want to go make the point that Donald Trump lost the first debate and is too afraid to have another one. At the same time harris had an amazing debate, might be the debate of her life and if she doesnt have a good one again before the election and she feels like she has a lead there is a lot of risk at giving someone another chance. Donald trump has shown that he is capable of having okay debates before. If he does better it could be a Come Back Story that could disrupt the direction of the campaign at this moment. I still think there is a very real likelihood that there is a debate because Donald Trump may find that he needs one because hes losing. We will see. Thank you both. A conversation to be continued. Nbcs Shaquille Brewster is in that swing county, door, wisconsin, which has voted for every president ial winner for almost 30 years. Shaq, what are voters there telling you . Are you seeing new enthusiasm for Vp Harris reflected there . Reporter yeah, without a doubt. I will tell you just based on the sample of the conversations i have had in this county, theres been definitely an even split in folks who say that theyre backing former President Trump or going with Vice President harris, but something that has been reflected in that new Nbc News Poll is that there are a significant amount of people who say they are looking at Vice President harris differently. Many of them pointing to the debate. I want you to listen to some of the conversations i have had here. How has your view of Vice President harris changed since july . Im surprised at how strong she is. I honestly kind of didnt know she was there for a few years because i didnt feel like she did a whole lot. Mine has changed favorably because i was very negative about t i just think she was like a nobody, didnt even know who she was and shes done a reasonably good job of marketing. I definitely have come to the conclusion that shes shes capable. I mean, she proves shes proved that in the debate and shes proved that since then. Would you have said that in july . No. No. Reporter that last couple actually told me they are traditionally conservative voters. He said his father would be rolling over in his grave to know that he was even considering voting for a democrat in this election. By the way, i talked to one young voter who said that hes still debating whether or not hes going to go out and cast a ballot, but he said that hes found out more about Vice President harris and pointed to Youtube Ads that hes been seeing. It gives you a sense that the advertising, the momentum that the campaign is engaging in, is having some impact and possibly one of the drivers behind that rise in popularity. Shaquille brewster, thank you for that look. In another Midwestern State j. D. Vance is working to keep Immigration Top of voters minds. Even as trump has encouraged one, if a certain Election Measure requiring proof of citizenship to vote isnt part of a broader deal. Ali vitali joins us from the hill. Tell us more about the deal to get this over the finish line. Thats exactly right. This does not include the Save Act. It was in the initial Plan A from Speaker Johnson. That failed on the floor last week. And now were seeing the speaker come to terms with the reality of the situation, which is that the Save Act was never going to pass. Thats why were now seeing him come forward with this plan b, which would fund the government and be a clean, in the words of Capitol Hill, continuing resolution, which is to say Theres Nothing else attached to it. They are just voing on punting this can down the road on Government Funding. It is true that Speaker Johnson said it would be political malpractice to shut down the government. It doesnt mean he wasnt squeezed between a rock and a hard place between the conservative hard liners and the former president , the standard barer right now, who was saying it might be worth shutting Dow E Government to get what they want on that this is now where we stand. Were going to see the House Move forward on this Funding Bill at some point this week, probably wednesday, maybe thursday. This is something that were hearing from both sides of Capitol Hill, republicans and democrats alike, that this is a path forward settled on in bipartisan fashion. This is where we thought it would end up, butt speakers politics of keeping his job are never far from mind when youre thinking about Government Fund ing. Thats why we had to see him go through the various hoops of things that wouldnt pass to now ultimately land at something that likely will pass in bipartisan fashion. Thank you, my friend.
