The Israeli Military has started launching new attacks on hezbollah and lebanon. Early in the Night Lebanon ordered an evacuation. This comes as both sides escalated their attacks. On Friday Israel struck an eightstory building in a densely populated area in beirut, killing several hezbollah officials, including the head of the groups operations unit. Authorities in lebanon say that at least 45 people died in that strike. In retaliation they fired back. Most were intercepted by the izraaly military, but at least one hit a residential neighborhood. Fortunately most people evacuated the aura in time and only three people were taken to the hospital. This new barrage of attacks lead to fears of a bigger conflict as israel continues to battle hamas in the south. World leaders are urging both sides to show restraint. President biden was asked about that yesterday. Mr. President, are you worried about widening tensions in the Middle East . Yes, we can. Were working hard. Joining us now is marc polymeropoulos. This rising in the Middle East overshadowing all of that. Whats your take on where things stand and what could be next. Well, jon, good morning. It looks like both sides are continuing climb this escalatory ladder. Last week when we talked, i explained to you what i thought the israeli strategy was with lebanon and they then officially confirmed this. Thats the idea. To change the minds within the hezbollah leadership, of the cost of the continuing Rocket Fire into the north. What you saw this morning is, again, another step up the ladder, where the israelis are hitting targets, but Thaw Ire telling lebanese affiliates, hainging into the radio, making phone calls, if youre a civilian, if theres any Hezbollah Yord nanlts in your house, youre going to be hit. Most rockets were intercepted by israeli air defense. You can understand the calculus, the strategy. It makes sense. The adversary has the vote, and right now hezbollah Chief Nasrallah has not changed any of his behavior, and they, too, are climbing up the escalatory ladder. In fact, this morning the israelis warned of an attack and to brace for attacks inside civilian areas. Time will tell in the hours and days ahead. If indeed this escalates beyond where we are now, what does that look like in your estimation . Is it an increased volley of rockets and drones going back and forth over the border . Do we think there could be Ground Assaults one way or the other . Weve been very focused on the military units. They redeployed things. The quote is theyre moving north. We havent seen the preparations for a Ground Assault into southern lebanon. That would be, of course, incredibly significant. On the one hand you can say that hasnt happened, but also remember the strike against them over the weekend, that killed in essence the head of the hezbollah forces and 20 of his commanders. You can see the prep for the way of o an israeli ground move. The hezbollah has a volley of missiles, and they have not used them. They can hit as far as way as tel aviv. It could be absolutely dramatic, the concern for the united States Policy makers is if the israeli Air Defenses become overwhelmed, the u. S. Will have to intervene on behalf of israel. Last week we had seen israel carry out the Pager And Walkietalkie attacks, and that has escalated this. Give us an update there, and just how thin will the Israeli Military be stretched if theyre fighting on two fronts . I think the Israeli Military the concern is that theyre tired. This has been almost a year of conflict. I think most israeli units are not in gaza now. They really have been refocused to the north. The problem, of course, is with the negotiations, they seem to be dead. There was so much optimism because the u. S. Was, quote, talking about being on the 10 yard line. I think the idea is the head of hamas is also not interested in a deal, and hezbollah has announced very clarely that their fight against israel is linked to support for hamas. Theyre trying to decouple that, but theres no real hope or optimism for a ceasefire deal. Jonathan, you Cant Help but think about the hostages. He said he believed 50 were up. The pain with hostages and the families is very palpable and there doesnt seem to be any deal on the horizon. In the survey, President Trump harris leading former president Donald Trump by five points, 49 to 44 among registered voters nationwide. Although that result is within the margin of error. The last poll was conducted back in july where trump led by two points. Were talking a sevenpoint swing. Since then harris has doubled bidens lead with women voters going from 11 points to 21 points. Harriss Favorability Rating has soared since july with 48 voters saying they view her positively compared to 32 in the last poll. Thats a striking increase. Trumps favorability has essentially stayed the same since july with 40 due him now. Harris leading trump by nine points when voters were asked which candidates better represents change, and when asked which candidate they trust more to handle top issues, trump still leads in most areas, though, by smaller margins than in a january poll. Voters trust trump by 21 points on um grags, nine points on the economy, and by six points on handling crime. Harris, meanwhile, has been trusted more to handle Abortion Rights by 21 points after biden led by 12 back in january. On Abortion Rights, trump is now saying he will be so much of a champion for women if he returns to the white house, they wont even be thinking about their reproductive rights being taken away anymore. In a lengthy, somewhat unhinged all caps post on friday, trump wrote that, quote, women are poorer, less healthy than they were four years ago and Hell Fix all of that. He wrote, quote, women will be happy, healthy, confident, and free, and you will no longer be thinking about abortion because it will be where it was supposed to be, by the states. He finished. During his rally in North Carolina on saturday, Donald Trump did not appear with nor even mention the States Lieutenant Governor and now republican Goob Na Torial nominee Mark Robinson. Robinsons facing growing calls to resign after a Blockbuster Cnn Report alleged that he made antisemitic and racist kmejtss years ago on a porn site. Nbc news has not confirms it. Robinson has denied the report and maintains he simply didnt say those things. Hes also insisted on remaining in the raus for governor. As of now, sources are telling Nbc News that former President Trump has no plans to pull his endorsement of robinson whom he called Martin Luther King On Steroids at a rally earlier this year. At the same time, four top Staff Members of Robinsons Campaign resigned over the weekend, though the campaign did not officially link those resignations to the cnn reporting. Meanwhile trumps running Mate Jd Vance reacted publicly for the first time over the weekend to that bombshell report. They spoke to the affiliate on saturday saying the allegations against robinson are not necessarily reality. Well, the allegations are pretty far out there, of course. Know they allegations are not necessarily reality. What i would say its all up to Mark Robinson whether hes going to be their governor or whether he wants to stay in that race. First of all, remind the viewers, what would happen if robinson even drops as because there were Ballot Deadlines that have come and gone, and tell us how trump is viewing this. I mean as far as the Ballot Deadlines go, the North Carolina Republican Party is in a bad spot if he were to drop out. Votes for him would go to the replacement candidate, but its very difficult in that situation, i think, with a replacement candidate. He was already trailing badly in the polls. It would be a shock if either he or any republican candidate won the governorship this year given all thats happened in that race. The real question in politics is whether this affects the president ial race. Yeah. So tell us more. Weve got this reporting about robinson staffers quitting the Cap Campaign and leaving a sort of Skeleton Crew intact. Whats the latest in terms of the sense of dysfunction there. Youre right. This does absolutely make North Carolina, which already was a battleground and Vice President harris has made real progress. But the last few i talked to, downright giddy at their chance, but they got shot. Yeah, absolutely. They would rather see a scandalized candidate on the ballot for governor than not see that. You know, one of the things you asked before, by the way, is how Donald Trump is dealing with this. The answer is hes at least letting publicly robinson forward without pulling his endorsement. Cupp had allegations lodged against him, and his own words, the Access Hollywood Tape in 2016, he was found criminally liable im sorry, civilly liable for sexual assault. So trump is in a bad spot on this thats very difficult for him to pull his support. Before you go, lets shift back to the nbc polling. The Brandnew Poll we talked about at the beginning of the show that has harris up on trump by five points, a real swing in her direction. We should note, theres a southeast of battleground votes that show a very tight race, harris up in some, trump up in others. Give us your Sense Overall of the state of where things stand. This poll is something thats going to make democrats happy. Obviously its within the margin of error, but you would, of course, prefer to be within the margin of error up by the margin shes up be, up by five points than down. The overall race as you pointed out, its extremely nip and tuck. Theres no reason right now to think that this isnt going to look like 2016 to 2020 with the election coming down to a relative handful of votes. By that i mean Tens Of Thousands or hundreds of thousands over a few states, but certainly Kamala Harris is in a much better place than Joe Biden was when he exited the race. Great to see you this morning. Lets start in the Middle East. Theres real rising fears globally and including in washington that this conflict in the Middle East might be expanding. Give us your assessment, how certain is that in your mind, and what would an expanded War Look like . Those are the right questions. Lets start with the second one first. What does a wider war in the middle East Mean . What does a regional War Mean . I think it would mean iran and the united states both involved, effectively backing up their participants in this current conflict. So, jonathan, were really not, in my view, at the point where we should be talking about a wider war that involves both iran and the united states pulled in. However, what we are seeing is an operational uptempo that is going from a Conflict Inside Gaza now to a very escalating quickly conflict on the north of israel with hezbollah, Houthis Continuing to send longrange missiles north from the red sea, and in the west bank, ongoing israeli operations. So theres a lot of conflict going on, but what are the chances of getting to that really wide war that draws iran and the united states in . I think still somewhere in the range of 10 to 20 , uncomfortably high, but overall, i think its still unlikely were going to see this broadly turn into a regional war. Admiral, i want to get to ukraine in a second. One more on this. What do you think needs to be done to have the fighting forces step back from the brink . One thing the united states will be considering strongly is moves forces into the region. That sounds counterintuitive. But what it does is its a signal to iran not to encourage hezbollah to escalate further. Beyond that, this Military Operation into the north of israel is simply going to have to play out tactically before we talk about a ceasefire. House speaker Mike Johnson announced yesterday that the house will vote on a clean Government Funding Package this week. The new legislation would extend Government Funding through December 20th without the controversial proof of Citizenship Proposal that republicans have been attempting to push through. However, it does contain additional roughly 200 Million for boosted Secret Service funding. In a letter announcing the move, jonathan writes in part this, while this is not the solution any of us prefer, it is the most prudent path forward under the present circumstances. As history has taught and current polling affirms, shutting the government down less than how days from the fateful election would be malpractice. Theyll send the bill to the house this week before going to president Bidens Desk for him to sign. Joining us now is the hills mychael schnell. Shutting the government down there would be a political disaster. How did johnson get everyone else on board . Jonathan, which was always the final step and the final stage that folks expected to happen, both on and off Capitol Hill. Even Hard Line Republicans said that they expect this to end with a threemonth cr into december. But the Big Question was how exactly would we get here . Remember, Speaker Johnson, at first, last week tried to pass that partisan continuing resolution. It was a sixmonth stopgap that would have pushed the Funding Deadline into march of 2025. It also included, as you mention, that voter i. D. Bill, the bill that would require proof of citizenship to vote, the Save Act, something favored by Hard Line Republicans and really pushed by former President Trump. House republicans couldnt get that over the Finish Line. There were a number of Hard Line Republicans who opposed the package. Defense hawks opposed the package. They couldnt get it over. Really, that was seen as a negotiating tactic, as House Republicans opening salvo to try to have these negotiations and talks with the democrats. When they couldnt get it over the Finish Line and get it passed, folks said, we know how this is going to end. Itll end with a bipartisan compromise. Thatll look like a stopgap into december. Lets talk a little more, though, about the reaction from rightwing republicans and what the reaction might be from Donald Trump. He was, of course, the loudest voice, saying, look, you cant get this piece of legislation that i want, this guarantee that noncitizes wouldnt be able to vote. Mind you, already they cant. He was encouraging republicans to shut the government down. What is the sense here as to how trump is going to feel now that hes been rebuked . Yeah, i suspect that former President Trump and Hard Line Republicans are going to be very angry and frustrated with this decision. Trump not once, but twice urged republicans on Capitol Hill to shut down the government, not fund government, unless the Save Act was in there. Even though, again, by and large, republicans had recognized that this was never going to be in the final product because democrats said it was a nonstarter. White house said it was a nonstarter. Again, it was all about the negotiating tactic. The opposition from republicans has been multifaceted. Theyre not happy it uses the stopgap format. Theyre not happy it doesnt cut spending. Theyre not happy the Save Act is not included. The end of the day, this legislation is going to pass. Theres not going to be a Government Shutdown. Johnson himself said itd be political malpractice for the Republican Party right before the election, but there could be hurdles for the house. Im not going to get into the nittygritty procedural detail, but there are hurdles this legislation is going to have to get over, unless johnson Shifts Course and does it under a fast track process. Thatll require bipartisan support. This is going to pass, but a lot of folks are going to be angry about it. Hard line republicans, former President Trump, because its not the final product they wanted, despite recognizing this was always how the story was going to end. We know Kevin Mccarthy lost his speakership because he passed a deal that kept the government open. Whats the sense as to whether Mike Johnsons grip on power will be impacted by this . Of course, we dont know if hell remain speaker. Depends who wins in november, but do we think some in the gop are going to be trying to get revenge on him . It is entirely possible. First, theres no indication that Speaker Johnson is going to face Mccarthys Fate with that motion to vacate. Its highly unlikely at this juncture. Republicans showing theyre in disarray, it wouldnt be a good look before the election. What happens afterwards . Johnson said he wants to remain atop the Gop Conference next year. He is hoping it is in the capacity of speaker. It could be as minority leader. There are a lot of questions swirling right now, is i dont knowson Johnsons Decision to put the stopgap on the floor, something abhorred by Hard Line Republicans, could it affect him remaining atop the conference . How large is the republican majority . Thats been the issue this congress. It was for mccarthy and has been for johnson. Theres a small group of hard line conservatives, really any faction within the party, that could prevent anything from getting done, including a speaker being chosen. If johnson has a slim majority by holds the majority in the house, it is entirely possible hell have the same upward battle to the speakership because he has detractors and critics within the conference. Its hard to see republicans hanging on to the house if harris wins. Of course, margin of error race, its 50 50 there. We shall see what happens in the lower chamber.
