I am jonathan capehart, this is the Sunday Show. 44 days until Election Day and Vice President harris is building on her lead over Donald Trump since the September 10th debate. A Brandnew Nbc News Poll Shows harris leading trump 4944 . Her 5 Point Advantage is within the margin of error. One Data Point reveals something historic. Harris favorability among registered voters is up 16 points since july. That double Digit Increase in popularity is the biggest for any Politician Nbc News has tracked in more than two decades. The Nbc Poll comes after a rash of new polls of the Battleground States showing growing support for the democratic nominee. Including one from quinniplac. 5 in pennsylvania and 50 in michigan plus 1. She does not just have the numbers in polls but outdoing trump in fundraiser. Harris raised 190 million, four times what trump pulled in. Her campaign ended the month with a whopping 235 Million in cash on hand. And harris continues to bring in highpowered endorsements such as the one she received today. From a bipartisan group of 700 national security leaders. Former secretaries of state in defense. Plus, more than a dozen retired four star retired general were among those that signed the letter calling the endorsement an act of patriotism. With the political winds at her back no wonder Vice President harris accepted Cnns Invitation to Debate Trump on october 23rd. Claiming the date was too late in the campaign, trump says he will not be there for a second round. At a Fund Raiser this afternoon in manhattan where she hauled in 27 million. The largest to date, harris needled trumps refusal to debate again telling the crowd my opponent seems to be looking for an excuse to avoid [ laughter ] looking to avoid when he should accept. Mark, lets start with you and the biggest headlines out of the poll. Reporter you already marked on the numbers going from july to september by 16 points and as you mentioned historical nature in our poll is that we have not seen someone have that kind of jump since george w. Bush after the September 11 Terrorist attacks. Put that in our poll 35 Year History. What also strikes me harris is winning the change argument. When our poll asked who better represents change by 9 points voters say she does rather than trump. I always thought that interesting, some people still, voters grouchy about the Nations Direction and about the inflation that her being able to as the sitting Vice President to be the Change Candidate versus Donald Trump who is an expresident to me has been very, very key. The other thing is, what trump and our poll he does have advantages when it comes to the economy. The cost of living and the border. All down from when Joe Biden was at the top of the ticket. That also is significant. You know, there is another i am glad you brought it up. In the story that comes with the poll on msnbc. Com the Poll Shows some of Trumps Erosion has come from republicans who are not diehard supporters of the former president. Talk more about that. Jonathan, this is a caution that comes from the republican half of our polling team. Our Nbc News Poll is conducted by republican team as well as a democratic team. They come together and help us out the republican side, republican Opinion Strategy said that some of Trumps Erosion is coming from the soft, nonmaga republicans who are not as strong with trump as they were a couple months ago. His caution is that we have seen this kind of movie before. After some tough times remember after Access Hollywood in 2020 or covid handling in the 2020 election that some squishy republicans drifted away from trump but then came back home at the very end. That was some of the caution. Despite all of the good news in the poll for Harris And Plenty of them, that that erosion for trump, those are republicans that he has the capability of winning back two months from now. One more thing mark, one of the questions, have you made up your mind. Will not change vote, 71 , might change vote, 11 . How significant is it that 71 are not going to change their mind . Reporter so, jonathan, the number back when we asked this poll a few months ago, that question a few months ago it was at 26 who said they might end up changing their mind. Now it is 11 . Now, it will be one that is the nature of us getting closer and closer to Election Day. The other one is how this is the Change Rate with harris at the top of the ticket versus Joe Biden. We really did see a squishy middle of a lot of voters. I just can not decide. I want to wait for a bit. All of a sudden with harris at the top of the ticket not only is the share of the third Party Vote gotten smaller but we are seeing in the poll fewer people have said, hey, i might change my mind. It is significant. A lot more people are locked into the Vote Choice two months ago. Nbc news mark murray, thank you as always for coming to the Sunday Show. All right, cornel, your Top Line thoughts of the News Poll. One, cautionary, polls are not predictors they are instructive. We know the numbers will move around because they are spending millions, they are not predictors of the future. First, lets look at erosion of trump, trump is at 44 right now. Yes, he eroded from where he is consistently at Nbc News Polling around 46 to 47 . Soft republicans are coming off, but what you are seeing with harrisgains are not from republicans. Look at how she has gained among African American voters . Look how she gained among women. The women, the Gender Gap right now it has blossoms, right . If we see the Gender Gap like anything We Saw in 2020 it is a problem for republicans. So, yes, you do have republicans pulling back. But, her, where she is gaining is not just from republicans pulling back from him and breaking towards her you have a lot of groups underneath that are breaking to her, a lot of sort of the base democratic voters we talked about before many months ago who were holding back from biden. Other thing that i think is interesting about this. Connecting this. But it connects to how she has gone from a net, unfavorite to favorite. It is historic. Never done in a short period of time. Especially, jonathan, it was not like they were spending 20 or 30 million. That was grassroots movement. That was the people rallying around her. You saw it on Social Media with all of the memes. Not her campaign. Connected with that is this. In Nbcs Polling and other polling i am seeing, young voters, and voters of color more enthusiastic and motivated to vote. If you two months ago it was a 6 or 7 gap with black voters that is erased in a short period of time. What that means in reality is, i think, you will see robust turnout. Two months ago, three months ago i was concerned that we would be able to reach anywhere close to what We Saw. Right now i think we will reach 2020 turnout if the numbers continue and maybe even surpass the 2020 turnout. You gave me a lot of data there. [ laughter ] just when, something about, you raise a good point. Trump is down to 44 when he is usually is around 46 and 48 . A lot of people said that is trumps feeling. I said it. It is. All right, so if there is erosion now among republicans they could go back. He could still just get to 48 but if i am listening to if i am hearing you correctly the fact that the base voters of the democratic party are now super enthusiastic and coming home, would it be enough to go over his 48 and get to the 50 plus that she will need . Yes. Trump wins by subtraction. Dont be mad at me, be mad at math. Dont look at Polling Look at Election Day. He does not get to a majority in michigan, or a majority in pennsylvania or in wisconsin. He gets roughly around 48 , 47 . He needs third Party Voting to shrink his margin for victory. What this Poll Shows and other polls show, that the third party, the third Party Consideration has shrunk. He has to be able to get above 47, 48 in the Battleground States that is hard for him to do. One more question for you. We got 30 seconds. [ laughter ] the base comes back, they swamp the polls, but how concerned are you about some of the Voter Surpression saying people get to the poll and they can not vote or their votes are not counted if they were not concerned and they were not seeing what we are seeing now, she has a more probable and better opportunity, more avenues to get to a majority than he does. That is why they are putting up the roadblocks. I think she will have the majority of the votes on Election Day. What happens after the election . That is the thing. That is the thing. House speaker Mike Johnson just announced the house will vote this week on a three Month Stop Gap Funding Bill to keep the federal government open through December 20th if congress approves the measure it will avert a shutdown. The new plan does not include any parts of the save Act Legislation requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote that johnson tried to link to a six month continuing resolution as Donald Trump wanted. The house rejected that plan last week. Speaker johnson wrote in a letter to Congress Quote this is not the solution any of us prefer it is the most prudent path forward under the present circumstances. He goes on to write Quote Shutting the government down less than 40 days from a fateful election would be an act of political malpractice. The bill includes an additional 231 Million for the Secret Service to help their needs for campaign purposes. Republican aides told Nbc News that the bill could make it to the House Floor by wednesday. Coming up. There is positive news for Vice President harris in todays poll. This race is still tight. A 19 point margin. Which is similar to the Margin Biden had over trump in july. Joining me now, cliff albright, Cofounder And Director of the black voters matter fund. And President And Ceo of Border Latino and msnbc contributor. Thank you for being here. Maria you are onset with me. I am going to start with you. Just, Nbc News Poll says that support for Vice President harris now is similar to what it was for biden in july. Is that what Voter Latino is finding through its own Polling And Surveying . Reporter not at all. Everything what We Saw here going into the convention, biden before the convention, on top of the ticket it was 47 38, 17 for indpendants. She independents. She was at 6 and rfk was at 7 . What we found surprising about that poll we expected the independents to come home to the democratic side. We expected that. Not to be the trump voters to be going on to harris and we are seeing it. Arizona and nevada. That is before the convention bump. We are seeing the shift more among young people. People are enthusiastic and one of them was, they were trying to figure it out. They liked her back story. Now, she is talking about policy. The biggest issue for example for a young voter, black and brown, between 18 and 25 was housing. Not a surprise she came out with that Housing Policy of building affordable housing while giving vote for first time homeowners that does not come out of the blue, that is out of research that we have been doing and other organizations have been saying voters need to hear. Are you see the same interest in Spike And Support that we were talking about among latino voters . Reporter yes. Definitely. And to be clear, you know, we have been saying this will happen for a year now. People first started asking about the polls the closer people get to the election they will receive the information about biden and now harris you would see the numbers increase that is exactly what is happying. Some of that increase, a big part of that increase that we are seeing is that energy of the switch, at the top of the ticket and it is focused on Kamala Harris herself. Some of it is a function of as we get closer from 70 days to 60 days to 50 days to 40 days and closer people are getting more information. And to her point they are learning more about the policies and the Tax Credit policies, so, as these conversations continue, i expect to see those Poll Numbers for Vice President harris continue to go in the direction that we have been seeing it go for the past six weeks. One effort things that black voters matters is doing is, you guys now have a 15 Million program in the Battleground States. It is going to expand nearly a dozen of the states, voter canvassing operation, aimed at increasing black turnout in Swing States and the deep south. And interestingly. Mobilization effort including a focus on black men. Now, one of the things that has been driving me crazy is this notion, black men were going to be going and voting for Donald Trump in mass. What are you seeing on the ground . How serious is the potential of erosion . Is there erosion of black male support for the democratic ticket . Right. No, we are not going to see any major shift. I dont even think a minor shift. In fact, i am believing it is going the other direction, that trump will get less support from black voters overall and in particular from black men. No. Some of the things we are hearing and we have been hearing it for a year now that the sky is falling and that is not what we are matching and hearing out in the community there say concern if some demographics of some might stay at home. Again, the more people hear about the policies. You know, one of the things we hear from black men. I dont know what she has done or what the Biden Harris has done and going to do for black men. As we have conversations around things that they have done or she proposed like the economic policies or around the George Floyd Justice and Policing Act that she cosponsored or any of the other Things Insulin costs that impact black men. As three discussions continue and as they start to addon i would not be surprise if they addon another policy or two that is uniquely targeted to black men. I expect that the numbers get to keep going in the direction that they are going and the last thing that i will say very quickly is in some of the polls we think some of the polls have not been done fully after the debate. I believe that Debate Performance she not just beat him but we think of some things that speak. The way she dismantled him and made him look small, no longer look like God Father but made him look like frado. That has an impact on black men that are looking at him, nah, you lost cool points and i am not going with you. [ laughter ] that is an edge. That is great. [ laughter ] so, it is one thing to go out there and knock on doors and say hey, who are you going to vote for. It is another thing this get those folks if they are not registered to register to vote. And, i want to point out for folks, you know the Data Point very well. Facilitated 36,000 registrations leading up to july 21st. That is the date that biden stepped out of the race. In the weeks since, Voter Latino registered 120,000 additional voters. Those are people who now are, who now can vote. Talk about that and how significant that spike in registration. The thing about the way we do work as the Stock Market, all of a sudden the moment she came on top of the ticket the Stock Market went hot. They all wanted in. The folks that were registering, 70 of them are under the age of 25. And 60 of them are women. In my 20 years i have never seen such enthusiasm among young people who are listening to what she has to say and getting in the ring. And the reason that is significant in a place like arizona where biden won by 10,400 votes, there are 163,000 latino youths that turned 18 since the last election. More than 10 times. We personally registered 13,000 people. So, already over the margin of Bidens Victory and what we are trying to tell people is, one thing to listen to the polls but watch voters behavior. The fact that there are record volunteers, the fact that people are spending their hard earned Cash Donating to her campaign. The fact that young people are saying you know i was not interested but now i want in and i want to volunteer . This is a new ball game. Mr. Chairman, your reaction to news that four staffers on Mark Robinsons gubernatorial campaign called it quits . I suspect there may be more. If you have top Campaign Officials these guys want life after that campaign. Particularly if they are anchored in North Carolina in the state of North Carolina or that region. They want the stain of the campaign on their resume. So, yeah, that makes a lot of sense. What is more troubling and certainly not surprising is the response from j. D. Vance and the response from Donald Trump. This is right up their ally. They are not men enough to call out someone of this particular character. Someone who is clearly identified himself to be unfit for office. He called himself a nazi and a pe rv. I dont know what else you require for someone to say, okay, i think we will pass. [ laughter ] [ laughter ] you know, michael, let me play Senator Lindsey Graham on meet the Press Today talking about Mark Robinson being unfit in the allegations are true. The charges are beyond unnerving. If they are true he is unfit to serve for office. If they are not true he has the best lawsuit in the history of the country for liable. I dont think this hurts trump but as to robinson, he is a political zombie if he does not offer a defense to this that is credible. Steve, do you agree with Senator Graham . That this scandal will not hurt trump . Reporter it wont in that it will be seen all along as he said back in 2015, if he shoots somebody on 5th Avenue he would not lose support t. Is not about moral fitness or anything. Donald trump the champion of the in addition that fundamentally should be a white country. As long as he upholds that standard he will always, he will never fall below 44 of it in this country because we remain in this fight around the nature of the country and all of the other issues are noise to a certain extent. Chairman, what do you think . Reporter i agree with that completely. I think that is the salute correct analysis of this moment and this moment it is not what we are talking about right now but this moment is part of 2015 Present day and ongoing. This has been something that is brewing within our country since the 1930s. Certainly within the republican party and it has been a battle within the party at various times to deal with this issue, to repulse this issue. To embrace this issue. So, we are right now in the period where we are embracing. And i think that says a lot of why j. D. Vance, who is pretty much whatever you want me to be today i will be because tomorrow i will be something else. And, and that is fitting for this republican party. And, so, someone like robinson fits right in that scenario. What makes is sweeter . What is the best cherry on the top that you can put on . He is a black man playing the white game in this space. And that, that is the most that is another reason why you dont hear a lot of white politicians condemning him. It works the narrative. Oh. So, then, Michael And Steve, the next question is, if it does not hurt Donald Trump does it put North Carolina in play . I bring that up, steve has a piece in the nations headlines, could harris take florida and North Carolina . The data suggests she can with the subhead if Harris Support among black voters continues to consolidate she has a strong chance of winning both states. I want to point out, yes, we have the full screen there, this gets to what maria was talking about in the last block. Much of the mainstream media is recognizing the states are competitive. What most still dont see is that Harris Candidacy has brought back into play not just the 2020 states, but also the 2012 states. The level of Excitement And Energy with voters of color make all of the states won by Barack Obama nearly winnable for newly winnable by democrats. Come on, steve . 100 . That is what we were talking about before, right . The countrys fundamentally divided. Fortunately that divide is slightly larger for those who want it to be a multiracial democracy. A large minority that prefer it is a primarily white country. That plays itself out in all of the states across the country all of the states won by Barack Obama and the country has gotten more diverse since then. That is what she was talking about. The numbers of new registrations. The problem with florida and North Carolina has been a Drop In enthusiasm and a Drop In turnout. The numbers have been there but we have not had the participation that Barack Obama had. The enthusiasm behind harris is bringing the collision into play. The coalition is bigger now than in 2012. One thing that you bring out in florida and North Carolina her share of the white support is better now than president Barack Obamas Exit Poll in those states in 2008 and 2012. Yes. Better than what Barack Obama got when he won. That is a little bit of what the earlier guests were talking about. Small percentage of the white republicans that this is just too much for. You are seeing there is some erosion that is meaningful. And steele, before we go to break. What do you make of Steves Argument . I agree with Steves Argument. In fact, when Joe Biden handed this opportunity to the vise president , when the shift occurred i was on air saying that at the end of the day this election for the democrats will be bigger than Barack Obama. That what Kamala Harris has potential to do then which is now born out and certainly reflective in what steve just said. She could create a different coalition, one that was more than just a combination of Barack Obama and biden. Meaning 2008 and 2020. But adding in new elements because what has happened in terms of issues is dobbs. Abortion is in play. What that does draws in central right voters that would otherwise be aligned with the republican party falling away because of the heavyhanded nature that republicans want to focus it. When the priets do not sit well. This coalition created by Harris And Walz is not just one to watch but one that the History Books will study. Florida and North Carolina will fall along with georgia. We think of the Emmett Till murder as one of the most famous murders in american history up there with Abraham Lincoln and John T kennedy. When you start researching it you are stunned by not only how much is not known still, but how much still has been erased. So, the fact that The Barn was sitting there hiding In Plain Sight. I felt in there lay not only the secrets of this murder but of, the history of our whole country, frankly. In that, it jumped out to me. We met when i went down to mississippi to interview Secretary Holand when she was there as part of the Site Visit that led to to Emmett Till monument but there i was in this what i thought of the grocery store, this sort of Redone Place and someone said no, it is actually over there. And it was completely dilapidated and overgroan. It seems to me, hiding In Plain Sight is the way things seem to be done down there. You know, you have The Barn that is hiding In Plain Sight, the Store Hiding In Plain Sight, much of the history that we know about this comes from journalist who wrote a history that was essentially written by the Defense Attorneys of the murders and it still is quoted when secretary went down there, you know, some of the history she learned was still pulled from that fake account. It is ongoing. Some one of the things that i found in the four years i spent researching the past is that this is all still very, very present. That there are people who are actively fighting it. It feels like the battle of the soul of mississippi and the South And America you know malcomx said everywhere south of canada is the south. It is between the forces of memory and erasure.
