A very good day to all of you from new york. Welcome to Alex Witt reports. We begin with a new Nbc News Poll with 44 days to go until the election. Kamala harris leaving Donald Trump 49 to 44 . The candidate best representing change, Kamala Harris with 47 to Donald Trump with 38. Steve karnak keep pointing out this Morning Harris is seeing additional growth. Some of the groups that have gravitated the most toward harris is independence, 20. Joe biden was putting up very poor numbers here. For harris you can see a 26 point jumped. As far as issues go, inflation is the top concern for voters. 65 of the people in your poles say the country is on the wrong track. Who is best able to solve the Crime Problem . Trump by six. Who is best on the economy . Trump by nine. Inflation, trump by eight. The election will be close. Weve always known that. Thats what happens in these president ial elections. We know this will be a close race. Vice president harris will be in new York City for an event. Her campaign announced they accepted the Cnn Debate Invitation for October 23. Trump said he was not interested in a rematch. She has done one debate. I have done two. Its too late to do another. I would love to in many weight. The voters are out there. Trump making the comments in North Carolina. Its a must win state for him. In the meantime, resident Joe Biden meeting with the leaders of australia, india, and japan in delaware for the final Quad Summit of his presidency. He used it to expand his cancer men shot initiative. We have reporters and analysts in place across the country ready to go over all these new developments. We will begin with Mark Murray in washington. Welcome on this pole issuing sunday. Lets start with the numbers. How are the voters receiving harris know that shes at the top of the ticket . This is the first poll since july. Now that harris is at the top of the ticket we have a situation where her favorable number has increased 16 percentage points in two months. That is unprecedented in our 35 Year History of the poll. You have to go back to george w. Bush after 9 11 to see a bump that size. That is really what stands out beyond the horserace members. On some of the issues we also have Harris Leading Donald Trump when it comes to the issue of abortion. We have harris ahead when it comes to temperament. We have Harris Leading when it comes to change. You take all this together and you see why this is a poll that at this moment ends up doing the spirits of democrats. But do note that it is within the margin of error. I want to note the 20 Point Differential in favor of harris in terms of who has the physical and Mental Health to lead. Let me ask you. You talk about harris and how shes ahead of trump. On which issues is Donald Trump leading harris . Donald trump is ahead on the border, the economy, and inflation and The Cost Of Living. Its worth noting that the Leitzsey Currently has are smaller than he enjoyed over Joe Biden when he was in the race. So when you turn the issues of the border and the economy, this is an Donald Trumps wheelhouse. Its not as strong as it was two months ago. Give me a sense of all of these issues. Which ones are the most important to voters according to todays poll. Number one is inflation and The Cost Of Living. 66 of voters say their Family Income is falling behind The Cost Of Living. Low that you have threats to democracy and then he went up having the border followed by jobs and the economy. Those numbers have not changed all that much since we have been surveying them. Overall, despite some of the better news on the economy The Cost Of Living is still number one. Do you have a sense in all the areas where Kamala Harris is leading is it because shes not Joe Biden or is it because she has put forward policy or the image that people are saying shes going to do better . The good news for Kamala Harris is we tested who better represents change. She leads by nine percentage points on that issue. When we ask a different way on what concerns you more that she would follow Joe Biden policies or that Donald Trump would pursue the same approach he did in his first term in office it was almost a dead even split. Voters were divided on the issue. I do think democrats are saying we are winning change but when you try to define what it is it becomes a little bit more muddled. Thats why i always need you to interpret this for us. We make presumptions and the next question blew it out of the water. Its bringing my panel. We have antoine the democratic strategist along with republican Strategy Susan and former representative david jolly. Welcome. They both try to present themselves as a symbol of change. 47 of voters see harris as representing change compared to 38 for trump. How much does that number tell you. I think this Roller Coaster will take us on many twists and turns before we get to november 5. I think what they are starting to figure out as she introduces herself leading in and focusing on the overall bill of health of everyday americans and as people learn about the intellectual capacity she has and her versatility as a candidate the more people gravitate to her and her policies and everything she has stood for and what she represents is the opposite of what Donald Trump, j. D. Vance, and the extremists on the extra other side represent. The contrast and the red and butter issues that everyday americans face. I think that is a lot different than her time as Vice President where she and Joe Biden had to focus on rebuilding the american economy and the american experiment. Susan, favorability has jumped a historic 16 points to a net positive of three point certainly a factor of voters getting to know her. Especially with trumps numbers remaining more stable and his favorability at a net negative of 13 points. Is it hard to imagine a less popular candidate can actually win . Lets not get into the electoral College Debate right now. Even with the Popular Vote we see it is within the margin of error. It is possible that the candidate with the more unfavorable rating could squeak by especially if you were looking at the polls, but one thing i would like to highlight with the Harris Number is lets not forget she just started her campaign a couple of months ago. When you look at The Way she has rocketed up people did not know her before. She just started to campaign and normally you would see Someone Campaigning in january, february, march like the current president was. That is a huge pickup but im not surprised about it. What is outstanding for her and does make a difference is her favorable is higher than her unfavorable. Donald trump never sees that. Biden never saw it. That is how you start changing a race like this in the margins. David, trump still leads on inflation and The Cost Of Living as well. The polls showed that inflation is the most important issue to voters. Can harris win when those issues have historically played a huge role . Sure. I will save you and the audience my morning in america speech. The truth is inflation is coming down, wages are going up. Go down the list of economic metrics and they are good. Republicans want to make this race about the inflation over the last three years but people this year are realizing that we are the envy of the world and the united states repost pandemic recovery. There is a good story for Biden And Harris to tell on this. I think the remarkable pretext for all of these numbers if you really unpack this is on the very first question are we going in the right direction around or wrong direction, 65 of the country thinks we are going in the wrong direction. You can see with lindsey grahams comments why if we are going in the wrong direction why are we not going with Donald Trump. Kamala harris does represent change. She has an opportunity to lead with her vision and shes more likable than Donald Trump. The voters are saying, i dont like the direction we are going. I dont like the state where we are in the country. Im putting that on the system including Donald Trump. Vice president harris has a shot to say we will take the country in a new direction. Voters are saying i would like to do that. Is there anything that we have missed that you want to mention . Antjuan, he first. She has room to grow unlike Donald Trump who may have peaked too soon. She is giving the politically and housed a reason to come home. She has consolidated the base faster than anyone in most of our political lifetimes and i think what she is doing with independent thinkers and independent voters, she speaking directly to them on the issues that matter the most. When we look at Voter Registration numbers whether it is the Gender Gap for the younger folks that are starting to pay attention, i think this race is going to be won on the margins. Susan and then david, anything that stands out to you . I want to highlight the fact that when you ask the question the most important issue facing you its not surprisingly see the economy, inflation and abortion. When you start asking the question differently like what is more important. Candidate you think will do better on the economy or a candidate that will protect a womans right to reproductive freedom. You start seeing things a little bit differently. I just want to be careful. Watch these polls and look at those issues. Abortion has a much more influential role in Decision Making for voters. Reporter for Trump Supporters here in North Carolina it really is a debate on whether or not to have a debate. When i was speaking to People Yesterday i could divide them into three different groups. Group one felt it was totally his decision. Group 2 do not think he should debate again because they say they feel he was treated unfairly at the abc debate. 14 described it as being three versus one. The third believe he should go for it. Us into what they told me. Why do you think it is important for trump to debate. It shows the other side of the story and how brainwashed they are, not us. Reporter do you think debates help trump . Trump supporters specifically are split on whether or not he should dissipate. At his Rally Yesterday he made it clear that he probably will not participate because as he put it it is just too late. Do americans need to witness another Harristrump Faceoff or is he right that it is just too late . He is clearly very scared. It would be helpful. It is a very short campaign. We ought to be able to hear the two Candidates Faceoff and debate their proposals or introns case the lack thereof. And for americans to get another chance to see the contrast between these two people running for the highest office in the land. By The Way, 2020, the last debate was October 22 so maybe your point is well taken that hes running scared. Hes obviously scared. He got crushed. He got obliterated in the first debate and as much as he goes around and tries to tell people that he actually won we all know he is full of you know what. He does not want to debate again. His team is scared of it and he scared of it. I hope harris holds his feet to the fire. We will see if she does. In the meantime checking out the new poll which shows Kamala Harris over a Fivepoint Lead within the margin of error. Trump holds advantage on the economy, inflation, the border. They are considered the top issues. With just six weeks how might harris chains minds on those issues . What i want to see the Vice President do a separate process herself a little bit from President Biden. Shes been an amazing teammate. I love President Biden myself but a lot of americans have problem with his immigration policy. He has made several changes over the course of his term. Republicans are trying to tie harris to biden. If you look at Fox News it is always the bidenharris plan. The bidenharris problem. A few months ago it just set biden. Everyone in the republican party, all their supporters are trying to blame her for his problems. Why doesnt she say, i would do things a little differently. I love the President And Respect him but i would have handled these tough issues in a different way. Heres how i would lead. I think that would be incredibly powerful for her to say and i dont think it would turn off democrats. We all know she is an independent woman, an independent leader, shes a strong leader and should show some of those differences. Shes a different person and would be a different leader. What about that Nbc Poll that shows the 33 point Gender Gap . Harris leads women by 21 points. Trump is up among men by 12. Why is there such a significant gap and is there Something Harris can do to bring some of those guys into her camp . The more she gets out there and shows she will lead on these key issues that male voters care about a lot including immigration and the economy that she can separate herself not just from Donald Trump but from President Biden and i think she will win more of these people over. Ive never really understood why so many men like somebody like Donald Trump who was such a fundamentally squirmy and weak person himself. He is not a model of manhood. A very far stretch from it. She has the ability to win these voters over, but i think they are hung up on some of these key issues. Sometimes i hear people say i dont like trump. I know hes not a good guy but the economy was good under him or we did not have as much inflation. They arent listening to the details of his new plans which would dramatically increase inflation. Paris harris needs to make that case and make it strongly. I think showing some separation from the president would help her. I know that you are headlining a harristran09 fundraiser. Is there anything tangible that she should do for those that are most ducking at this point . The veterans know that Donald Trump is terrible for veterans. He hates them. He does not understand why they serve. He has called us suckers and losers and everything else. Harris needs to make an affirmative case for what she will do. The biden administration did great things for veterans including passing the pack back over the objection of many congressional republicans getting a to people like myself that were exposed to burn pits overseas. She needs to make a case for all the things she will do in the future. I think that veterans are also looking at Foreign Policy. We need to hear a bit more from the Vice President on what her Foreign Policy would look like in such a troubled time in the world. If she can get out there and make those cases she will win more veterans over. Youre a member of the armed Services Committee and a marine so i want to get your perspective on a report saying that senior u. S. Officials say they are privately acknowledging a Ceasefire And Hostage deal is unlikely before the term ends. Republican Senator Tom Cotten said if the administration had taken a different approach the work could already be over. Here is part of that. First off they are not giving them the political or diplomatic support that they needed from the beginning. Rather than trying to put constant pressure on israel the more pressure we put on iran if they adopt a policy to let israel win, the war probably would have ended a long time ago. Does the administration take fault for the prolonging of the war that seems to be on the brink of erupting into something worse. Does Kamala Harris need to promise a different approach if biden is not able to seal the deal . And this question needs to be asked. How much about this lies in the hands of the united states really . Its a great question but lets start with the beginning. What Tom Cotten said is absurd. The idea they were putting more pressure on israel than iran with the heavy sanctions the administration has applied and enforced with taking out proxies in iraq and elsewhere. People like Tom Cotten are more interested in scoring partisan points than doing what is right. Making sure by The Way in the process that we do not have a wider war in the Middle East. Thats the most important priority for the united states. We support israel. We are putting pressure on the proxies around the Middle East. The worsthat can happen free national security is for the united states to get drawn into a wider war and thats why the Biden And Harris administration has been working hard to end it. Its a tricky balance. We will stand by israel but we will also pressure israel to do the right thing to end the war and not just be vindictive. They are not following the lessons we learned in iraq and afghanistan. It would be more productive if veterans like Tom Cotten pointed out those problems so they could actually win and defeat hamas which everybody needs for there to be peace in the Middle East. That would bring the war to a close and set the stage for a Peace Deal and that would prevent the united states from getting drawn into a war in the Middle East. Quick answer on this one. Will there be a Government Shutdown . I dont think so only because republicans realize it will kill them in the election. They have no plan. A manhunt is underway in alabama for multiple shooters who Opened Fire at a popular Nightlife Area killing four people and injuring many more. We have more from birmingham. What do we know about the shooting so far . Reporter im in the five points south area of him and him. As you said, its a very active area at night. This all occurred Saturday Night just after 11 a. M. 11 00. It happened at the Hookah Lounge that is right here behind me. You can see a Bullet Hole in the Hookah Lounge. Authorities say they found 100 Shell Casings in the area. 21 people were shot. Four of them died. They said it was a targeted shooting and one of the people who died was the intended target of the shooter. They said they do not believe this was part of an altercation inside. They say the suspects came in a vehicle, got out of the car, Opened Fire, hip those people and got back in their car and left. As you mentioned, a manhunt is underway. Lets take a listen to what authorities had to say. Approximately 21 people were shot. Four are deceased. They were taken to various hospitals. The Atf And Fbi were on scene. We believe this was a targeted shooting. We believe the individual targeted is among the deceased. We believe there was a hit on that particular person. Somebody was willing to pay money to have that person killed. Reporter 21 peoples lives who have dramatically changed in the last 13 or so hours. One of the things the authorities did say that they think will be helpful is theres a lot of small businesses in the area who have surveillance cameras. They are going through the cameras. They have set up a Qr Code and they are hoping that somebody in the community knows something about those suspects. Extraordinary information. Thank you so much. We are told there is a four Point Lead in cbs News Poll that was released today. What has been reaction from the Harris Camp and her allies to todays polls. First of all im always there for you. If you are a Harris Supporter theres a lot to like. Starting with that Topline Number that shows her with the lead. The surgeon her personal Approval Rating is so important given the fact that she just jumped into the race in the last few months. Its an unprecedented campaign. What we have seen so often is the there are bad Polling Numbers for democrats it tends to send them into a tailspin. Even leaves good numbers have democrats taking a more tempered approach. Listen to what John Fetterman from pennsylvania thought about the approach. Its five points. That is encouraging but im not going to say now i dont have to drive for 4 1 2 hours to have a rally for democrats in rural counties. It is going to be very close and you will see the polls, the Washington Post had a poll that is effectively tied and the others just like yours has harris up, but regardless i promise you pennsylvania is going to be very close. Otherwise if its not it will be a nice surprise. I am expecting a very close and very competitive race. It is so interesting because Vice President harris on the Campaign Trail continues to call herself the underdog. Referred that from governor tim walz, her Running Mate as well. The other thing that is interesting is we are starting to see that the polls will be less important because actual votes are being cast and beginning to be counted. That is what the campaigns are increasingly looking for. We saw a huge number in virginia as they started early voting. Pennsylvania will be starting their voting very soon and a lot of county so that will be where they turn their attention. Let me ask you. It appears Donald Trump is saying no to the invitation to join her on cnn for another debate. Does this become part of the Campaign Messaging going forward . I was listening to Congressman Moulton earlier. He did not hide his feelings about what happened in the last of it. This is what the campaign is trying to do. Good to see you, ben. Im curious what you think netanyahu means by whatever it takes. I am very concerned. We have seen this at a low boil throughout the conflict since october 7. The u. S. As recently as a few days ago before the Pager Attack had been trying to negotiate some deescalation to avoid precisely to this scenario. When he talks about whatever it takes i think what is in peoples minds is will there continue to be largescale airstrikes. Well there potentially be some kind of ground incursion, Ground Operation which would dramatically raise the stakes. And reprisal, his Book Hezbollah could fire a significant number of rockets. They could also try to undertake acts of terrorism and violence. All of this, i think this is what the u. S. Is concerned about, it could further set the region aflame. You could see violence in places like iraq where the u. S. Has a large diplomatic presence. You could see iran involved. The trend is clearly not good. Is it clear to you why they chose this last week to set off these explosions . On the Security Side of things they have had for month a population that is displaced. A lot of frustration. I think what the u. S. Is focused on is if you get a ceasefire that all goes away. There is a diplomatic solution to return those people home and recover the hostages. I think there is also, this is not just my own view. Its also his own politics. They have always factored into the decisionmaking. The longer he is perpetuating these operations, the longer hes presenting himself as indispensable, that is keeping him in power and frankly i think in our own Election Cycle he might see this time before an election is the time u. S. Criticism may be muted. There is always the political dynamic. I think he sees this as something that is necessary although i agree with the criticism that i do not think it will help return people home but the war is not necessarily the clearest path to return people to their homes but i also think he has some political interests. It is starting to feel like the u. S. Is kind of toothless when it comes to the Middle East conflict. It just seems to be getting worse. The Wall Street Journal looking at a report this week. Senior officials are not giving up but they are not expecting a Ceasefire And Hostage deal. How much of a problem is it that Joe Biden, he is essentially a lameduck president. Does that leave the u. S. Without any leverage . Yes. He has not been willing to use any leverage in terms of trying to compel a ceasefire. Theres been essentially a two Pond Plan over the course of the last year. One is to negotiate a Cease Fire between israel and hamas that leads to the return of hostages and creates context for the war to end and two normalizing relations with israel to unlock some pathway to greater peace in the region. Clearly those ceasefire talks have died. No matter how many times they sent people to the region they are moving further apart. It does not create a climate where you think you will get a Cease Fire deal either. Just the other Day Mohammed announced he would never agree to a ceasefire. The problem is they have not had a plan b. If hes not willing to make the deal to get the hostages back we will look at using some leverage, voting a certain way at the security council. If you are saying we are going around the region telling people what we would like to have been but not putting leverage behind it what we have seen is there are actors in the region that are just beginning to tune that out. I think that creates a pretty unstable time. We will have an election. There will be a transition. This could be very volatile. After the elections there was a gaza war. Often times leaders try to do things knowing the u. S. Is more distracted, i think that is unfortunately the kind of unstable window we are in. You signed onto a letter which several hundred national security leaders endorsing Kamala Harris. What could she do to bring an end to the conflict to bring back the hostages and prevent the u. S. From being tracked into another war . What continuing Biden Policies be the best to have that happen. She will bring some new energy. This burst of energy will be welcomed around the world. She will have a lot of political capital. She will not have the lame duck status. That alone is positive. I also think she needs to go back to the drawing board. She has talked about she has used a different tone when it comes to calling out my Minister Netanyahu and his willingness to ignore the united states and the circumstances in gaza, i think she needs to look at these tools. Both trying to get ceasefires and leverage that can be brought to bear, but part of what is needed is a vision. Where is this going . What are we aiming for . A ceasefire alone wont even solves the problems. I think she can come in and as much as what is happening in the inbox today, even more so its about sketching out a vision of where u. S. Leadership is trying to go in the region beyond putting out fires . She has the opportunity to do that in a way that even a second term Joe Biden wouldnt. Okay. Sage Advice And Perspective as always.
