You just heard from the president , as israeli strikes continue, targeted strikes inside beirut, theyre bracing for potential retaliation from hezbollah, after waves of deadly attacks involving explosive devices, and the First Lady joins the president at the Cabinet Meeting this hour after my exclusive conversation with her on a range of topics, including her Husbands Decision to step aside from the president ial race. We havent had a chance to speak to you since he decided he would be stepping aside. Obviously a historic decision to hand the reins over. Are you at peace with his decision . Im totally at peace, and so is he. Lets get started. Good day to you, im Peter Alexander, in for my friend, Andrea Mitchell. The 2024 election is underway, as in person, early voting kicks off in three states, while Donald Trumps republican party is facing a major scandal that could impact his chances in what is a crucial battle ground, the state of North Carolina. Trump endorsed Lieutenant Governor, thats him, Mark Robinson is denying reports he had anything to do with racist and sexually explicit posts on the Message Board of a porn site. Cnn published posts they attribute to robinson, including one from 2010, i am a black nazi. Others include him allegedly writing slavery is not bad. And a Story Recounting Peeping On Naked Women when he was a teen. Nbc news has not verified the authenticity of those posts but cnn reports that it traced the comments back to robinson because he used the same User Name across various social media platforms. Politico is now also reporting an Email Address belonging to robinson was found on the Web Site ashleymadison, you may have heard of its designed for married people seeking affairs. Robinsons team denied he created or used the account. The North Carolina state republican party is sticking by him. And the Trump Campaign did not mention robinson by name last night, only insisting that North Carolina is vital to its campaign. We want to begin in raleigh with antonia hylton, former North Carolina governor, republican pat mccorey, and sam stein, Managing Editor at the bulwark. Robinson, as we have heard without evidence is blaming the democratic candidate, State Attorney general Josh Stein here for leaks that he calls salacious tabloid trash. Hes vowed to stay put, and the deadline has passed for them to get out here. How are voters and elected officials in the state reacting . Reporter peter, people here have been reeling from this news. The democrats that i have spoken to a bit more gleeful and some of them saying theyre not surprised. They had done a lot of work in this election, they say, to try to draw attention to some of the past inflammatory remarks that robinson had made, for example, Casting Doubt on the holocaust, calling it hogwash, things like that. Until the new reporting from cnn, there are allegations that he made antisemitic, racist, and nighly offensive remarks about all kinds of people, once again, on that porn Web Site. Republicans here are having a range of reactions, though. Some State Level official haves started deleting social media postings, pictures of themselves at past appearances with robinson. The Trump Campaign denied reports that they were trying to pull away from robinson or told him he couldnt come to events. We know robinson is not going to appear at trumps rally in North Carolina in wilmington tomorrow, On Saturday, and so i think thats very telling here. What theyre trying to do is keep their other republican candidates, you know, in the fight right now, as there is widespread concern that im hearing from people on both sides that this scandal, robinsons situation, could basically drag down the entire republican ticket from top to bottom, and then help sort of Craft A path for harris to potentially flip this state in november, peter. Thank you. Governor mccrory, let me ask you, for a second, your successor, the governor, presently, Roy Cooper, took himself out of taillight the situation to be Kamala Harriss vp. Youre well aware there have been concerns about robinson long before the cnn revelation. Its remarkable, he is the Lieutenant Governor, he has been elected before. You know the Ground Game there. Where do you think the president ial race stands in your home state, and what are you hearing . Well, first of all, this has been a political Time Bomb waiting to explode for a long time. Both republicans and democrat have known there were issues going to be coming out. On business dealings, personal dealings, he came out of nowhere, based upon a you Tube Presentation that got him elected to Lieutenant Governor, and it was a very well coordinated timed response, right when a replace couldnt be made by the democrats or by people who fed this to the media, and its very i think it could have an impact. I think the Trump Campaign was not surprised by this. They have been avoiding him for a while, knowing that he had some baggage that was already coming out, and they anticipated more, and youre going to see as in politics, there is no loyalty. Youve got to understand real quick, Mark Robinson was probably the most effective and yet dangerous Populist Speaker that i have ever seen in my political career, and he appealed to the masses, to the base in North Carolina like i have never seen before, but there was always a danger there that we didnt know his background. He didnt know the details of his life, and thats what often happens with populist with at times very dangerous rhetoric. And its happening to us right now. We should note the governor Roy Cooper is at an event focusing on public schools. Hes taking questions there. Nothing specific to this question, if he does make comments, we will share those with you. Sam, i want to play what Donald Trump has said about robinson in the past. This is from just this spring. Listen. This is Martin Luther King on steroids. Okay. Now, i told that i told that to mark. I said, i think youre better than Martin Luther King. I think you are Martin Luther King times two. Sam, North Carolina, of course, is key to trumps southern strategy. Obviously if he loses pennsylvania, thats a place that he needs to be that he needs to focus on as well, right . He has had a series of different comments about robinson. He was at the rnc more recent than this. Clearly this is a gift to the harris campaign, and im struck, sam. Your take, like Donald Trumps in a tough Spot Right here, right, because he should condemn the comments, which he has not done. He should unendorse, you would assume. If he does that and robinson doesnt drop out, it makes him look weak. What do you do if youre Donald Trump . Trump cant condemn the comments or unendorse. His entire persona is about not backing down. Why would he start now . I want to backtrack a second about the timing of this. The governor suggested that this was planted by democrats. I dont know the sources for andrew kaczynski, the Cnn Reporter on this story. I know hes among those dogged investigative reporters in the online journalism universe, and i would strongly believe he did his Due Diligence and was not fed this material but uncovered it on his own. Secondarily to that, i will note i talked to a number of Democrats Yesterday who frankly were despondent at the timing of this. They would rather the story come out in mid to late october than mid to late september. To your point, peter, the harris people are ecstatic that this is in the public, and they want to tie trump to this, but they would much rather be having this conversation when voting is two weeks away than when it is eight weeks away, and ultimately, there is not a conviction that trump gets tripped up by this. You know, there are some democrats who i talked to who believe that the contagion doesnt spread beyond the gubernatorial race. To your earlier question, no, trump will not, i suspect, distance himself from robinson. To do so would be to admit you lacked the judgment when you elevated this nan. To be clear right now, we should note beginning today, the mailin ballots will sent overseas. Theres never really an Election Day anymore. Its an Election Month or two months in a lot of places, including North Carolina. Let me ask you about Donald Trump on a different topic. He spoke at an event that was supposed to focus on antisemitism where he appeared to blame the Jewish Community if he loses this fall. Heres what he said. If i dont win this election, and the jewish people would really have a lot to do with that if that happens because at 40 , that means 60 of the people are voting for the enemy. Israel, in my opinion, will cease to exist within two years. A lot of questions that raises. He said these people would be voting for the enemy. Was he referring to Kamala Harris, was he referring to iran . It wasnt entirely clear. He repeated a lot of antisemitic tropes at that event to jewish voters. What is the strategy here, sam . You and i have been down this road many times now. Donald trump uses jewish american populist as a monolith who can only vote related to one issue, that is israel, that they must be supportive of the government in israel, and in this case, he says that they have an obligation or they owe him their support. To do that is something he has done many times before. To do that at an event thats centered at antisemitism was particularly rich and stood out for me. Governor, one last thought to you, theres an oped from ohios republican governor, Mike Dewine who you know well. Its the latest in his vocal defense of springfield, ohio, the lies of Trump And J. D. Vances Running Mate have pushed about the community. Are other republican governors now being forced to sort of defend their states against the Partys Leader . Well, its always tough for both Republican And Democrat mayors and governors. I have been a mayor of charlotte for 14 years, and governor of North Carolina. When a local issue becomes a national issue, the two agendas dont match with each other. The governor is walking a very Fine Line right now, and so is the mayor. Its going to be an interesting dynamic during the next two weeks. With a very important issue, but they ought to focus on the bigger issue at hand, and thats the immigration issue, and i think theyre getting caught up in the details of certain localities that can distract from the major issue that they probably have an upper hand on. Yeah, Donald Trump saying hes going to visit the next couple of weeks. The mayor saying its going to be a strain on resources. Well be watching. Antonia hylton, sam stein, thank you so much. Let our Expertise Round out yours. Vice president Kamala Harris is back in the Swing State of georgia, hosting an event on Reproductive Rights and preventable deaths. She plans to address the deaths of two women who died as a direct result of georgias strict Abortion Bans. The Harris Walz Campaign has been hitting this issue hard. They kicked off their Bus Tor this month, a topic the Vice President addressed again during last nights sit down alongside Oprah Winfrey. A doctor or a nurse has to say she might die any minute, better give her now care because otherwise i might go to prison for life in some cases. Think about what were doing in terms of saying that certain people who are in these State Houses and starting with the former president of the united states think theyre in a better position than a doctor or a nurse. Nbc news washington correspondent, my friend Yamiche Alcindor is joining us now from the event in atlanta. Youre there in georgia, the vps reproductive Rights Event just getting started. You spoke with a sister of one of the women who died as a result of lack of access to Abortion Care and treatment in georgia, with restrictive Abortion Laws put in place, and enacted after the overturning of roe v. Wade. What did they tell you . Reporter this is a heartbreaking story. Her name is Candy Miller. She was one of the two women who was highlighted in the pro publica reporting. She decided not to go and seek medical attention because she was worried that georgias restrictive Abortion Laws would mean she wouldnt get the care. So she took abortion medication, unfortunately then got an infection, suffered for several hours and then unfortunately passed away lying next to her 3yearold child. Now, Candy Miller was a mother of three. Her sister tells me that the family is really just heartbroken over this. They see her death as preventible. They see her death as a consequence, a direct consequence of the Abortion Laws changing in this Battleground State of georgia, and of course all across our country after roe v. Wade was overturned. We also of Course Saw the Vice President on stage with the family of another woman, andrea thurman, she wants people to know her daughter is not a statistic and her daughter leaves behind a young son. Her last words to her family were please take care of my child. The Vice President is going to be here, leaning into these personal stories that she believes will help her gain the support of voters who really see these stories and are moved by these stories. Of course Abortion Rights and reproductive health have been a big issue for the Vice President long before she was at the top of the ticket. Now that she is running as the president ial nominee here, she really wants to make sure that people understand what she believes, which is that Donald Trump is directly to blame for the deaths of these two women and all sorts of Health Complications women are facing in other states. And hearing from Ambers Mom and sisters last night during the event with Oprah Winfrey was the most powerful moment of the evening. Yamiche alcindor, thank you. I want to bring in senior Adviser And Spokesperson to the Harris Walz Campaign. That is adrienne elrod. You heard the reporting, the Vice President is addressing Reproductive Rights and Abortion Rights in georgia. Given what we have seen in red states, is this an issue thats going to resonate, that can carry democrats, harris, to the top in whats happening in georgia. This is an absolutely heartbreaking story. These two women who should be alive today because of Donald Trumps focus on getting rid of roe, they are not. So this is squarely on him. This is because of trumps Abortion Ban, and i want to make it clear that when the Vice President learned of these two deaths of these women earlier this week, she said to us, she said, i want to get to georgia in week. Its very important to me that i go there, that i talk directly to the communities, to the families who have suffered from this. Unnecessarily suffered from this tragedy. So thats important. But, look, of course, peter, back when roe was overturned, we saw it in the 2022 midterms, Democrats Over performed in large part. People worried about what a national Abortion Ban would look like in this country, and what would happen in their own communities as a consequence of roe. Reproductive freedom is the Corner Stone of the campaign, one of the top issues that mobilizes voters, and one of the top issues that the Vice President cares about. We have a reproductive Rights Bus Tour that is crisscrossing the country, going into red communities, blue communities, its a critically important issue in this campaign. A lot of attention has been placed on georgia. I was with her in atlanta, and savannah as well, savannah a place democrats dont go to very often. Let me ask you about North Carolina and what we have been reporting via cnn, as it relates to the Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson there. He has no plans to drop out of the race, after his comments allegedly made on a pornographic Web Site. He has trumps endorsement. Does this change the Campaigns Calculation in terms of North Carolina . Theres been a debate in democratic circles, conversations i have had. Do we put more energy into georgia or North Carolina . North carolina has voted ten out of eleven times for the republican president ial pick, not the democrat there. 2008 for Barack Obama was the exception. Are you going to do anything different as a result of this . We have been focused on North Carolina since the beginning of the campaign. We have been bullish on North Carolina for a long time. Theres a couple of reasons for that, Number One, reproductive freedom, Roe Being overturned changed the calculus in North Carolina. The 2020 election, we narrowly lost. We as in President Biden, we lost by 1. 2 points. We are very very focused, we are very invested this this state. This is one of our top Battleground States. Theres a reason why the Vice President has spent a lot of time there. Why Governor Walz has spent time there . Have you scheduled something new because of this . Or wait and see . I dont want to get in front of our strategy. Well continue to put advertising dollars in the state. Continue to invest in the infrastructure needed in a state like North Carolina. Last night, during the event with Oprah Winfrey. Kamala harris talked about a series of issues, in particular, Gun Violence at one point, and when this exchange happened, she was trying to demonstrate as a Gun Owner, she was in favor of the second amendment, and in favor of tougher gun restrictions. Heres what he said. Im a Gun Owner too. I did not know that. If Somebody Breaks into my house, theyre getting shot. Sorry. Yes, yes, i hear that. Probably should not have said that. Ill deal with that later. She acknowledged her staff will have to deal with that later. Did she go too far in those comments . No, look, i dont think so. The Bottom Line is this, shes made it very clear that shes a strong supporter of the second amendment. If youre a responsible Gun Owner, a responsible hunter, if you have a gun in your home to protect your families, that is fine. What she wants to make sure is guns stay out of the hands of people who want to do harm, out of the hands of the mentally fit. The cost of living was another issue. Republicans have tried to pounce on her answers on The Cost Of Living. The argument is she hasnt had enough meat on the bone on this issues. I have talked to democrats who say the Housing Issue has piqued their interest right now. Does she need to be more specific for the undecideds about exactly what shes going to do to improve The Cost Of Living issues in the country . Peter, first of all, she has been in the race for seven weeks, seven and a half. So she has laid out a series of policies. Shes laid out very specific concrete plans too. How is she going to address the Housing Crisis in this country. How is she going to relieve small businesses, how will she allow them to grow . Shes focused on creating public private partnerships. The levers of the administration with the private sector, with the business community, that is something, again, goes to our housing policy, our small business policy. It is something youll hear her talk about more and more when it comes to lowering costs of families, cost of groceries, and shes going to focus on the fact that shes proud of the successes she has achieved so far with President Biden, creating over 15. 5 million jobs, 800,000 of those manufacturing. The infrastructure bill, legislation. Winding down, which is something they are addressing as well. I appreciate you being here. Always nice to have you. Senior adviser for the harris campaign. Nice to see you in person. As we were sharing, President Biden is meeting with his cabinet right now. Just spoke about the recent attacks in lebanon. Targeting hezbollah and the Middle East peace process. Lets take a listen again. The peace process, were continuing to try to make sure that both the people in northern israel as well as Southern Lebanon are able to go back to their homes and go back safely. The secretary of state, secretary of defense, the whole team is working with the Intelligence Community to try to get that done. Were going to keep at it until we get it done. Weve got a way to go. Is it realistic to get to a Cease Fire Deal or have too many bad things happened that make it difficult . If i ever say its not realistic, we might as well leave. A lot of things dont look realistic until we get them done. We have to keep at it. Nbc news white House Correspondent Mike Memoli joins us from the north lawn. Is there any more Joe Biden Statement than what we heard there. Typical biden. First on israel, the president , as we have been reporting, there was indications that the White House was laying out a last, best, final plan for peace until the waning months of his administration. Is there any guidance on where the conversation moves, goes from here . Theres a significant focus on the part of the administration at this point for whats going to happen next week, which is the u. N. General assembly, one of the last times if not the last time the president will be addressing an audience of his global peers in a significant way. He wants to use the address to talk about the importance of international alliances to deal with very complicated problems, one of which, of course, the war in ukraine, hes going to meet with President Zelenskyy here at the White House after the General Assembly, but also in dealing with the most significant global development since last years General Assembly which was the October 7th Hamas Attack on israel and the continuing conflict there. The president has been relying on some of his key mideast partners to try to get to the cease fire agreement, a longterm and potential lasting peace, and were going to see the president have engagements at the u. N. To deal with that. This is a very important part of the president s portfolio. Yes, he is not on the ballot. Today marks four months exactly until the inauguration of a new President And Part of this Cabinet Meeting, which was the first Cabinet Meeting since the president announced he would no longer with a candidate, to focus on the Unfinished Business he wants to get done. The sprint to the finish. People who have been with him since the beginning o. Administration, they have a lot still on their plate to get down. Dr. Biden, the First Lady in attendance today, yeah . Yeah, this is an important and interesting Cabinet Meeting because of who was not there, which was Vice President harris, obviously who has her campaign schedule, but then because of the spotlight that the First Lady did have, shes talked about the fact that sometimes the White House in her words surprises you, and for somebody who has worked on Womens Health issues for her whole career, frankly, as a teacher and also a second lady and First Lady, one of the things that struck her most was the inequities in Medical Research, funding for Medical Research for women. This is an important priority that she had the opportunity to spotlight. You had the great interview talking about the fact that, yes, a burden may have been lifted from her Husbands Shoulder in one respect, but theres a lot of work they both intend to do during the last few months in office. Well play part of our conversation on Andrea Mitchell reports, gorgeous day on the north lawn. Theres other news thats breaking as we have been speaking coming from israel that carried out what it is describing as a targeted strike in lebanon, killing a senior commander. Israel hit lebanon launching 140 rockets in an effort to weaken hezbollahs arsenal. It comes after two days of deadly attacks earlier this week in lebanon, where some 5,000 pagers and walkietalkies exploded killing at latest report, at least 37 people including two children and injuring close to 3,000. My colleague there in Tel Aviv is nbc international correspondent raf sanchez. Hes joining us now. Theres more reporting were learning about this strike. What can you tell us . Reporter israel is saying that it struck and killed ibrahim ikiel, one of the top commanders, a man who israel says was responsible for attacks on this country since the October 7th Hamas massacre. They are saying he was meeting in a cellar in southern beirut, a hezbollah stronghold, with senior members of the unit, hezbollahs most elite military unit, and israel is claiming that the strike killed not just akiel, but also the top Chain Of Command of the unit. That has not been confirmed by hezbollah. This was a major strike, peter, first of all for its location. The fact that it happened in beirut, where israel has largely refrained from striking over the course of the war, that was a major major Red Line for hezbollah. It is likely to draw a serious response. This was also a big strike in terms of the ordinance used. This was israeli War Planes over the capital of lebanon, dropping heavy ordinance, at least nine people have been killed according to the lebanese public health ministry. Some 50 injured, and you can see in some of the footage from the ground in south beirut, parts of whole buildings have collapsed here. This is a major blow struck against hezbollah, if it is confirmed that akeel was killed. It is a major escalation by israel, and we should say that he is also a man of interest to the united states. There was a 7 Million bounty on his head for his alleged involvement in the bombing of both the u. S. Embassy and u. S. Marine barracks in beirut in 1983, so there will be no tears in shed in washington of the elimination of this individual if it is confirmed, peter. His history dates back as you indicate to the awful day for the american service members there. Raf sanchez with the very latest. Thank you. Joining me now is Marc Polymeropoulos who spent years as a cia officer, including chief of operations in europe and eurasia. Colin clark as well, director of research at the sufan group. I want to get reaction about what we heard about the latest strikes taking place in beirut, targeting this Hezbollah Commander in a cellar there. The israelis say he was with other senior leadership of hezbollah. How big of a strike is this and what risk does it pose to the potential for a wider war in that region . So, first of all, peter, the this is someone the u. S. Intelligence community knows well. He has a lot of american blood on his handles, responsible for deaths of 241 american servicemen and women in the bombing of the marine corps barracks, and the bombing of the u. S. Embassy where diplomats were killed as well. This is a very bad individual, and frankly, the israelis served justice for americans, for the families of those killed. This is someone the cia knew very well. What does it mean overall . This is coming to present day. He was in charge of the rot 1 forces. Hezbollahs special forces. A unit that would sit along the border that was seen especially in the israeli national community, as an adversary. It just goes once again to show how israel has this total Intelligence Dominance over hezbollah. This has got to be getting into his head right now. Over the last 72 hours, extraordinary operations and its clear that israel is following the policy they have done for some time over the years of escalating to deescalate. Theyre making it so uncomfortable, if you want a wider war, this is what youre going to get. Theyre hoping he stands down. The problem is the adversary gets a vote, and its unclear what nelrolla and patrons will do. Thats what i want to drill down on. All three of us have spent a ton of time there. Its hard to communicate the tightness they are together, gaza to lebanon is a matter of hours. The drive you can make from the southern border of israel to the northern border of israel with lebanon. This is a War Weary Country with a potential to be dealing with a second conflict in real terms on its northern border. You know, what concerns you about this, and the potential, as i was asking marc about this thing exploding, waiting for whatever the retaliation may be . Im concerned about a broader conflagration, particularly one that drags into the united states. I think hezbollah has to respond. Theres nothing worse than showing weakness in the Middle East, even if the response is performative or symbolic in nature, hezbollah has to respond. Just an amazing kind of set up by the israelis here with the Pager And Walky talky explosions disrupting Hezbollahs Command and control, forcing them to meet in Person And Bombing the meeting of high level officials. An Intelligence Master Class here by the israelis. But the region is still on edge, waiting to see what happens next. And let me ask you about that. The u. N. Security council is meeting today. Theyre going to address allegations that War Crimes were committed in the Device Explosions in lebanon. Israel hasnt confirmed responsibility. U. S. Officials tell Nbc News israel was behind it right now, but is this an acceptable form of warfare . Theres no way to know with thousands of pagers and walkietalkies, exactly whose hands those devices are in when they explode . Ill leave accusations of War Crimes to the international lawyers to figure out. As a terrorism expert, i can tell you, this is not new. While the Pager Explosion may be lifted from a hollywood, you know, film, this is a Shadow War thats been going on between israel and iran, and irans proxies. This is kind of par for the course in many ways between all of these entities involved. Marc, let me ask you why now . Why Benjamin Netanyahu Presuming it was israel, of course, acted now in taking this action. Clearly there was a concern that hezbollah was going to do something, and they wanted to preempt that. What specifically do you think drove this Decision Making . Theres incredible frustration in israel that 70,000 Citizens Cant Return to the north. There is, you know, support across the israeli political spectrum to take care of whats happening in the north. This is an existential threat to israeli than anything going on in gaza. It was the notion that they were going to climb the escalatory ladder. They have this incredible tool in their tool kit. Policy makers would go back to the Intelligence Community, what do you have . Well, they had this incredible kinetic Intelligence Operation involving pagers and walkietalkies, was this the right time . Perhaps this was better if it was preceding a Land Move into Southern Lebanon where hezbollah would be incapacitated. I see the logic of sending a message that they have to stand down. Again, the question is what will hezbollah do now . It bears repeating how hezbollah and lebanon is a bigger existential threat to israel than hamas and gaza have been. Marc polymeropoulos, colin clark, i appreciate your time, and expertise, thank you. Liberty, liberty, liberty, liberty with the potential Government Shutdown looming, former president Donald Trump, and House Speaker Mike Johnson met in washington last night. On wednesday, the house failed to pass a 1. 6 trillion Stopgap Spending Bill that would have kept the government funded in march, A Push by republicans, backed by trump to oppose proof of citizenship requirements on Voter Registration blocked that effort, and joining me now is democratic Congressman Ro Khanna from the state of california. Congressman, thank you for being here. The government, you know well, runs out of money on september 30th. What is happening on The Hill right now . Does Speaker Johnson have a Plan B to avoid a shutdown . Peter, the democrats have been for funding this past the election. I think Speaker Johnson is saying thats what theyre going to do and propose something to keep the government open. Lets get through the election, and Fund Government until then. Speaking of Capitol Hill, let me ask you about what the house did, voting unanimously in increasing security for president ial candidates. This is 400 and something to nothing. You dont hear that often, providing the candidates the same level of protection as the sitting president. You wrote in a Washington Post oped, increasing security for former President Trump in your words should be a bipartisan effort and a no brainer. What do you want to hear from the acting secret Service Director when he speaks in the next hour or so . Im glad we voted unanimously to make sure that President Trump and Vice President harris have the same protection as President Biden. I want to make sure that the Secret Service has the manpower to protect the expanded perimeter thats required to keep them safe. And i want to understand what the Security Breaches were, how did someone with a rifle get so close to the president a second time. Why did that person happen to know the president s schedule . There are a lot of unanswered questions that the american people deserve answers to. Let me ask you about something earlier this week where Elon Musk wrote on x a post that has since been deleted. He referred to President Biden and Vice President harris not having been targets of assassination attempts, he questioned perhaps why that was the case. The Secret Service said they were aware of the post. What is your reaction to that . Well, obviously he shouldnt have posted it. We have to be very very careful at a time where theres increased violence, increased threats to not inflame that kind of conversation, and whether someone is being sarcastic or not, theres no room for that on these platforms when it comes to violence, and im glad Elon Musk took that post down. Congressman, have you heard youre a surrogate for the campaign . Ive heard from some reporting that some surrogates are expressed new concern about their own safety when they travel on behalf of either campaign, i suspect, but specifically as it relates to the Harris Walz Campaign, have you heard from surrogates, others who go on behalf of the candidates, do they feel comfortable maintaining their schedules . Fortunately, i have been out there around the country, and i have not had any personal concerns. I think the vast majority of americans are good people, even people who are trump supporters often are peaceful protesters. So i havent had that, but i am confident that the campaign is taking security very very seriously at these events. Yeah, obviously a priority, let me ask you, you have been pushing for a tougher policy, specifically the topic of israel, more conditions on aid for israel. Kamala harris, the Vice President has not definitively said where she stands on that specific issue, beyond of course saying she supports israels right to defend itself. Do you believe she will take a different approach than Joe Biden if elected . I think shes going to enforce u. S. Law. We have the united States Export Control act, and that requires any aid we give not be used to violate human rights, but based on your earlier reporting, the most important thing right now is to avoid a regional war. I mean, the hezbollah leader that was killed, he was obviously a terrible person who committed atrocities against americans in the 1980s, but the question is do we really want an escalation right now of a war in the Middle East and certainly we dont want the united states getting dragged into any conflict. Our priority needs to be a deescalation in keeping the united states out of another Middle East war. Congressman Ro Khanna joining us from The Hill. Voters this three states, virginia, minnesota, South Dakota can go in person to early Voting Polling sites or Election Offices and cast their ballot. Joining me now from manassas, virginia, home of the famed manassas national Battlefield Park is nbc Capitol Hill correspondent ryan nobles. I was driving through virginia today. There were some long lines outside the polling places, bright and early. Reporter youre right about that, peter, weve moved from manassas to fairfax, im surprised by the number of people taking advantage of this opportunity to a vote 45 days before the actual Election Day, and were surprised by the number of republicans that have showed up. You can see behind me, theres a very very aggressive republican get out the Vote Effort here, and thats significant because in the past, this is ground that republicans have seeded to democrats. Democrats have made a much bigger emphasis on early and absentee voting. Of course the former president , Donald Trump, whos the republican nominee has raised doubt about the integrity of early voting without evidence to support that. In july of this year, he called it ridiculous. Republicans in virginia feel differently about it. Theyre making a concerted effort, Glen Young Kin is encouraging republicans to get out as soon as possible to vote. In prince county, had a conversation there with the head of the Election System there. He said they have had Voter Information sessions where they sat down with voters that are concerned about the process, showed them how it works to try and be completely transparent so people can feel confident about the Voting Process. Take a look at this line here in Fairfax County. It starts here at the government center, and walk with me a bit, you can see how this line snakes all the way back quite a ways. You can see a number of people in Line Waiting to vote, and whats significant about this, peter is not just that this line is here now, but its been like this since 8 00 this morning. And this is one of three early voting locations in Fairfax County alone. Theyre going to open another 13 of these locations in the beginning of october, so they expect a lot of people to vote early, and in fact, in virginia, alone, peter, this is consistent with the rest of the country, Voting Experts believe as many as half of americans will cast their ballot before Election Day, either through early Voting Or Absentee voting. This has become a much more popular form of voting in the 2024 election. Animated bunch of voters behind you. Things are getting underway. It is a healthy process to see the Voting Process finally underway at the end of a long Campaign Season. Ryan nobles in fairfax, virginia. Good to see you. He will be speaking to the nation of formerpresident Donald Trump in july in butler, pennsylvania. Another item we are watching is what i did earlier this week, having the chance to spend time with First Lady Jill Biden as we toured what is called the peoples house. This place is impressive. It is a new interactive exhibit. It is a White House exhibit. It opens on monday, and we will have a full Tour Tomorrow On Saturday. Today, by the way, it is free. The next time you are in washington, you will want to book tickets ahead of time. We spoke about a number of topics, the First Lady and i did, including whether the president feels safe amid a recent rise in political violence. I feel that joe and i are in good hands with the Secret Service. I never doubt that i never feel any fear, and i think theyve done an incredible job in protecting. And im so grateful that they take care of me and joe and all of our family. And whats the message . What do we say to americans right now . We have to get through another 40something days. What do you say to americans right now in what has become, for better or worse, sadly too often for worse, such a toxic Campaign Season . I think we have to come together. I think we have to vote as americans. You know, thats a right weve been given and i think we have to take advantage of that, and then we have to have a peaceful transfer of power. Part of our visit with the First Lady, dr. Jill biden. Joining us is a member of the house armed Services Committee and former navy pilot, Congresswoman Mikie Cherrelle of the great state of new jersey. You heard the First Lady calling for a peaceful transfer of power amid the political tension. Given what the former president , Donald Trump, has been saying on truth social, his comments about cheaters as he describes them, even in advance of Election Day, how concerned are you about violence on and around this election . Well, of course, we are keeping an eye out. We are watching very carefully what is going on across the country. I think americans have understand what is at stake in this election, how necessary it is for people to exercise their right to vote. We are pushing out as much information as possible about how safe and secure our elections are. We are working incredibly hard to make them so, and yet we are facing Trump And Maga republicans who are trying to sow discord, who are trying to undermine our Election System. We know trump has not said he would respect the results of the election. We know he tried to stay in power last time despite losing in the election. So it is a concern, but one we are making sure that we are ready for. So lets dig into the campaign for a moment here. You know the Vice President in georgia today, before she heads to wisconsin. You recently sponsored a bill in congress that would protect access to emergency Abortion Care in every state. Reproduction rights will be the focus of Kamala Harriss remarks there today. What will the bill do . When do you think it will go up for a vote . Well, it is a resolution that reminds people that the Law Of The Land necessitates that hospitals across the nation provide Emergency Care to pregnant women who go into the emergency room, and we are seeing in too many cases that care is not being provided. It is being undermined by State Legislatures saying that you cannot care for a woman who is facing an emergency situation, you can only act when she is about to die. We are seeing felonies, you know, doctors afraid of Felony Convictions if they act to save women, and we suspected that this was going to result in very, very bad outcomes and now we are seeing that. We are seeing Women Miscarrying in public restrooms, losing their ability to have future children because of sepsis. We are also, unfortunately, now seeing that women have actually died because of a lack of care. One woman dying in the hospital as doctors were waiting for her fever and her Heart Rate to go up because they wanted to make sure that she was about to die and they could prove that in court. Unfortunately, they did not get it right and she did, in fact, die before they offered her an abortion. Yeah, there have been so many compelling and awful stories weve learned. I want to ask you before you go. You sponsored a bill that awards the Tennis Legend Billie Jean King the congressional gold medal. It is the first time a female athlete has been the recipient. Why her, why now . Why not her . I think Billie Jean King is so iconic, one of our best athletes of all time. Someone who not only was a fantastic athlete, but then used her platform to advocate for others, to advocate for equity and to advocate for title 9, other women in sports. It has made a huge difference. In fact, she over 50 years ago was able to get equal pay for women in tennis because of her long Work And Advocacy we recently saw the Womens Soccer Team advocate for and receive the same. Just last night i was at the mystics and fever game, totally the biggest sellout crowd. It has been amazing. Mikie sherrill, everyone loves bill Jean King. Thats across the board.
