We begin with a scandal in battleground, North Carolina, that could have national implications. Mark robinson is facing pressure to leave the race after allegations he made racist and lewd comments on a pornography site, including declaring in one post that he was a black nazi. Robinson who is North Carolinas lieutenant governor, is denying the allegations and vowing to stay in the race. This is not us. These are not our words. This is not anything that is characteristic of me, nor has it ever been. Folks here also know my character. They know who i am. They know my voice, so to speak. This is not my voice. This is not things we would ever say or even think. Cnn published the string of incendiary comments it says it found on the Message Board dating back to 2008, well before robinson began his political career. Nbc news has not veriied their authenticity. Party is sticking by robinson, who has been embraced by Party Leaders including former President Trump. This is Martin Luther King on steroids, okay. Now, i told that i told that i told that to mark, i said, i think youre better than Martin Luther King, i think you are Martin Luther King times two. With us now, Nbc Correspondent Antonia Hylton in raleigh, North Carolina and senior national Politics Reporter jonathan alan. Antonia, what more do we know about these allegations . Reporter hey, jose. Well, these explosive allegations have shifted here in North Carolina just the conversation were hearing from operatives on both sides, who are concerned in some cases on the republican side that this could drag down the ticket. And on the democratic side, or in some cases very gleeful over this, though not necessarily surprised. He has a history of making comments like this. The allegations in the cnn report, though, include comments like saying that he is a black nazi, saying that he wishes slavery could come back and that in fact if it did, he would go out and buy some for himself. Also, calling himself a perv and describing an incident in which he as a young person he watched women showering without their knowledge or consent. Essentially peeping on them. And a whole host of other very lewd comments that frankly cant be repeated here. For some voters ive spoken to today, this is something that hasnt shocked them, for others they think this could change dynamics in a state that has so many moderate republicans and independents, jose. Of course, it is a battleground, so those voters are critical. Indeed. And, john, Donald Trump is scheduled to hold a rally in North Carolina tomorrow. Nbc news learned robinson will not be going there . Yeah. This is not an area where first of all, i dont think robinson wants to be out in public generally speaking. The Trump Campaign doesnt want robinson appearing on stage with him. I spoke to Trump Adviser earlier today on a slightly different topic, which is the question of whether there might be a withdrawal of Trumps Endorsement of robinson, they said theyre not tracking that at all and rumors of him being pressured to do that are not accurate. We have seen Donald Trump stand with people accused of a wide variety of things, ranging from sexual indiscretions to comments that are deeply offensive to people, various races, ethnicities, national origins, genders and orientations. And very seldom has Donald Trump ever considered or actually withdrawn an endorsement. And, john, so what is the structure as far as, you know, running for governor in North Carolina. Are there any deadlines that need to be met so that the Persons Name is on the ballot . Yeah, i think there is still going to be like, if robinson were to drop out, i think there would be some legal battles going on. Basically were looking at a deadline this weekend, you know, for the ballots to go out. Probably too late already at this point to change his name. You see the North Carolina Republican Party not abandoning him. So i think until he were to drop out, just assume things are going forward as normal. If he was going to drop out. If he dropped out, my understanding is, you know, i hate to put this out on the air without 100 triple checking, my understanding is if you drop out and youre replaced that votes for him would go to whoever the republican nominee was, if his name stayed on the ballot. Antonia, you say that this candidate has had a string of controversial comments. What kind of things has he been saying . Reporter well, jose, in the past, i mean, prior to what we all found out yesterday, this is a candidate who is currently the lieutenant governor, running for governor of North Carolina, who has cast doubt on the reality, the voracity of the holocaust, calling it hog wash, who has made at times lewd and hurtful remarks and gestures about women, something that female voters in this state have often brought up. And he at times has said incredibly incendiary things about lgbtq people, but one of the remarks found by cnn in their Reporting Yesterday was actually that he admitted to watching transgender porn, pornography, and commenting about it on this website. And so that kind of disconnect certainly something that both the voters here are processing, but also we can expect to see political operatives, of course, particularly the democrats take advantage of here, when i got on the phone with democrats here at the state level, most of them were laughing, saying that quickly theyre going to be ads that touch on all of this. Youre going to see a contrast, theyre going to be showing the fact that as you played in clips moments ago, Trump And Robinson shared this relationship, thats the thing youre going to see democrats do to tie to him to the rest of the republican ticket as the democrats try so hard now to really turn North Carolina into this Battleground State and to forge a path for harris to be the first democrat to take it in many years now, jose. And, john, meanwhile, Donald Trump spoke to a jewish group Last Night. And had this to say. If i dont win this election, and the jewish people would really have a lot to do with that if that happens because at 40 , that means 60 of the people are voting for the enemy, israel in my opinion will cease to exist within two years. What is the former President Saying here . I mean, i dont want to get inside the mind of the former president exactly, but hes basically making the argument to jewish voters, number one, if they dont vote for him, that israel will cease to exist. Number two, if you look at his expanded comments yesterday, hes basically saying there is he believes hes being betrayed by jewish voters. Says look what ive done for you in terms of what he did in his presidency, treating them as though they should be a model and supportive of him in a variety of issues. Donald trump does not always speak in terms that i think hit every ear as sensitive to variations in this case hes basically saying to jewish voters, sounds like a bribe, if you vote for me, youll get x, y, z, look at all the stuff i did for you before. Just wondering what your reaction is to all these allegations that have surfaced against Mark Robinson. Well, anyone who identifies themselves as a black nazi or resurrects the concept of institutional slavery, they have no place in elected office, particularly as governor. We find his comments not only meanspirited, off base, but quite frankly foolish. Unfortunately maybe individuals who are running on the republican ticket in lieu of not having Policy Recognition for voters to consider, they play to the lowest common denominator of humanity. They seek to belittle individuals and place individuals and communities in categories using Race And Religion and ethnic backgrounds to incite to fear as opposed to providing hope and a Road Map on how we can have an inclusive society. The naacp is calling on robinson to drop out of the race. He said hes not going anywhere. Hes staying in. What do you make of this . Well, it is unfortunate. You know, we are nonpartisan, but were not blind. Were political as hell in the sense that we care and are concerned for individuals, for african americans, womens rights, those who have been marginalized, for working poor people across racial lines. We want to see Public Policy that advances an inclusive society to promote a quality of life that all citizens should have and treat people like Human Beings. And anyone who belittles Human Beings to try to marginalize communities, they should not have a place in politics. They should not have a place in society because we must grow past that. We want to see an america that looks more diverse, inclusive and prosperous and not america based on a 1930s apartheid system. You know, just in that kind of bringing it to a bigger conversation, you know, among these allegations that robinson is accused of writing is that he, you know, wishes that slavery were back and that he would own slaves if it were. How do you, just in general, wider philosophical terms, how do you process something like that, being thought of as a concept, publicly stated in a some, you know, Site Somewhere, but how do you process something like that . Well, it is unfortunate that that is the debate now in the Public Square, that we have utilized platforms, a whole political party and candidates utilize their platform not to promote Public Policy, but to belittle individuals, to marginalized communities, and to try to resurrect bad policies from the past. The institution of slavery was not only inhumane, it should be something we never revisit again, we learn from, in ways in which we dont do that again. The concept of naziism to attack and kill millions of people based on their religious belief, something we learn from and never to repeat, not to celebrate. And unfortunately the Public Square is being used to resurrect concepts and campaigns and policy that would demean. And in many ways kill people. That should not be a part of where we are in this society. America is the most diverse we have ever been. Thats a beautiful thing. I recall growing up, we talked about america being a Melting Pot of many perspectives, many communities. We should move forward looking to recreate and build on the success and not try to tear it apart. Ask candidates, what is your Public Policy recommendation, not your smallminded approaches to how you see people and oftentimes those Who Demean individuals have the most to hide. Lets remember that, first of all, he denies he ever said or wrote any of that stuff and it was in 2008, before he entered Public Service or public arena. So, it is nonetheless, i guess, you know, fundamental and you were talking about how the Melting Pot that is the united states of america and, you know, e pluribus unum, out of many, one, but im still just the concept, whether you write it in a private blog or write it in a some Site Somewhere or put it in any political pamphlet, it is these concepts. As you say, i mean, the issue of naziism, and what that represents, and slavery. It just seems i dont know, derek, it is it is even a wider conversation about, you know, how Human Beings process the just the nature of Human Nature in the past. The reason why it is credible that he said it is because of all of the things he said during this campaign. Thats why it is more credible and reliable that he said it. Secondly using race, using xenophobia as one of the common denominations to drive fear, think about springfield, ohio, where you have we just lost derek. We just lost derek johnsons communications. Israel says it carried out what it described as a targeted strike on lebanons capital, beirut. This, right here, youre seeing a live view of that city. Israeli forces and Hezbollah Militia have been training new strikes following a deadly series of attacks. Just Yesterday Israel launched the most intense bombardment of Southern Lebanon since the October 7th massacre. It came after two days of attacks of Exploding Pagers and walkietalkies. Joining us from beirut, keir simmons. Good morning. Where do things stand in beirut right now . Reporter well, you know, we just we heard in the past few hours the sound of israeli jets overhead. And then quite quickly after that there was the news of a strike in the southern suburbs here in beirut. There was a plume of smoke rising above one part of the city, an area which is a hezbollah stronghold. And we now are hearing from multiple agencies that one of those killed potentially in that strike is ibrahim akill. Now, he is a senior member of hezbollah. Hes wanted by the u. S. , 7 Million reward for information about him, stretching all the way back to allegations he was part of a terrorist cell responsible for the bombing of the u. S. Embassy here in the 1980s. So, he is somebody that is very significant. And hezbollah appearing to respond very quickly, down on the southern border, israels northern border, israelis saying that hezbollah are firing around 90 rockets after that attack here in beirut, continuing to fire rockets earlier in the morning after overnight israel launching Artillery And Air strikes across that border, into lebanon, targeting Hezbollah Rocket facilities. So, all and all, there are these international calls for restraint and for deescalation. That isnt what were seeing. Not what were hearing. We heard just yesterday from the leader of hezbollah talking about retribution and we heard just yesterday too from the israeli Defense Minister saying that they will continue with these strikes and with this pressure, if you like. The israelis point, they have Tens Of Thousands along the border who arent able to return to their homes, the same is true on the other side of the border and there is little sign of compromise. Lets bring in nbcs Ali Vitali on capitol hill. Good morning. What exactly does this mean . Rare when you see the Nays Column have zero votes in it. But thats of course what just happened as the house finished up their votes Here Today And Heads Out Of Town for the weekend. This is a bill sponsored again in bipartisan fashion and it effectively requires the Secret Service to protect President S and Vice President s and major president Ial Contenders as well. There is some debate among members and on the other side of this building in the senate as to whether or not a bill like this is actually even necessary. For example, some lawmakers have said to us they think former President Trump already has the same level of security as President Biden. Others have said that while this is a tangible step it might be better in some ways to just ask the Secret Service what it takes already and what the standards are already for how they apply the number of Secret Service agents that are necessary for each protectee. In this instance, were talking about former President Trump. But also Vice President harris who you see on the screen there as well. The other thing here, when you see it happening in bipartisan fashion is the ways in which this body is trying to undertake its Oversight And Investigation into the attempted Assassination Attempt of former President Trump. They will also wrap in what happened over the weekend at his near his Maralago Club into their investigation. But this is just the first tangible piece that we have seen coming out of the house, unclear how the senate itself will actually deal with it. Ali vitali, thank you very much. Meanwhile, later today, the Acting Director of the Secret Service is set to give an update on the investigation into the first Assassination Attempt on Donald Trump in july. Joining us now is julia ainsley. Julia, good morning. What are we expecting to hear from the acting Director Today . We can expect Acting Director rhode to use some pretty harsh language, language he used in the past, to describe what happened in butler in july. He called it a failure. He put that failure squarely on the Secret Service. Thats different from what we heard the first hours and days after the the shooting when the former director was in charge, where they said local Law Enforcement let the ball drop. They have done this review. This is the first full review done since july 13th. We know there already have been some people put on leave, including the director of the Pittsburgh Field Office for the Secret Service as a result of this review. There could be others who are punished or disciplined or lose their jobs as a result of the review. I think by and large what this is going to come down to is why that roof where the shooter was able to take aim was not secure. We previously heard that fell out of the Secret Services perimeter. But it is up to the Secret Service to come up with plain when they work with local Law Enforcement in an area, if they didnt communicate that to the local police, thats whats going to need to be known in this report. They have to come up with measures in the future to make sure that all of the places are secured. Julia ainsley, thank you very much. This morning, a community in Eastern Kentucky is in shock after a District Court Judge was shot and killed in his own chambers. And the man charged with his killing is the local sheriff. Joining us now is Nbc News correspondent sam brock. Sam, good morning. What more do we know about what happened here . Sure, jose, thats a great question. Were nearly 24 hours removed now from this Incomprehensible Tragedy and no closer at the moment to understanding what the motivation would have been for Someone Shooting and killing judge mullins inside of his chambers. But as you said, jose, one person is in custody this morning, that is the sheriff of letcher county. Sheriff mickey stines. And so, he is facing one count of first degree murder. That is judge mullins right there. 54 years old. He was on the bench for about 15 years for a decade prior to that. Was a prosecutor there in letcher county, kentucky, population 21,000 people, so youre talking about a small town. In terms of where we stand right now with the investigation, kentucky State Police say that they are in the process of looking into whether or not witnesses might have some insight here. They said there were people inside the courthouse, but not specifically in the chamber, so theyre interviewing them. There was Video Surveillance as well, though, State Police Couldnt exactly identify where in the courthouse that video might exist, but it could be material to the investigation. And they also said, jose, that there was a short argument prior to the shooting, so it might not necessarily have been spontaneous. Was this a situation where there was personal animus or personal situation involved . It doesnt appear to be likely that it is a product of the climate of political violence that were seeing right now. Thats an open ended question. I would also point to you the fact that matt butler, an attorney in kentucky and the brotherinlaw of mullins did post a comment saying, please pray for judge Mullins Family and my children. Vice president Harris Heads to Battleground Georgia today where shes set to give remarks on Reproductive Rights and shell be addressing the deaths of two Georgia Women who according to reports in propublica, died after they could not access legal abortions and timely medical care. Joining us now, nbcs Yamiche Alcindor from Atlanta And Alexi mccalvin. Yamiche, what are you hearing from Harris Campaign about her Speech Today . Well, jose, good afternoon. She is here in Battleground Georgia because the Vice President wants to hammer home the idea that former president Donald Trump, in pushing for the overturning of roe v. Wade, by Nominating The Supreme Court justices who did that, that he is really responsible for the deaths and health complications that women have suffered in this state, which has a ban on almost very restrictive ban on abortion, but also for women across the country. She is going to be talking specifically about the cases that you just highlighted. Amber Thurman And Candy miller. She is going to be talking about the idea that Abortion Rights is going to be a critical part of the election and i want to play for you part of the sound of amber Thurmans Family Last Night in a live stream with the Vice President. Take a listen. Amber was not a statistic. She was loved by a family, a strong family. Youre looking at a mother that is broken. Ambers mom shared with me that the word over and over again in her mind is preventable. Yeah. Preventable. The story is a story that is sadly not the only story of what has been happening since these bans have taken place. Reporter so as i said, the Vice President is really going to be leaning into personal stories, and as she was talking about, this Propublica Investigation found that the state officials in georgia have found this committee that was focusing on abortions have found that those two womens deaths were preventable abortion deaths because one of them did not get the access to the medical care she needed. Her team waited and waited and waited until she got really sick. A lot to talk about here on an issue that the Vice President has leaned on before she was at the top of the Ticket And Leaning on more now that she is at the top of the ticket. There is a tight race between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. How big is this in Battleground States, especially like georgia, how important is this to voters . Yeah, i mean, since the dobbs decision, we have seen voters in traditionally red State Voting to pass Abortion Rights and to protect Reproductive Rights for women, via ballot initiatives. The other thing that we have seen and were seeing with Kamala Harris today is that even when republicans try to take it off the table, or dodge questions about abortion, or not talk about it at all, democrats will make it an issue, time and time again, because theyre willing to share these horrific stories, these really Human Stories of the impact of republicans policies and what the country looks like for women specifically and families if republicans are in control nationwide. And so that is something that moves voters, not just at the polls, but very personally because you see these faces, you hear the stories and it is not partisan to feel sad and affected by people dying because of conservative policies on abortion. And, abortion seems to be kind of a tough topic for the former president as far as how his message on his thoughts about abortion, on the one hand, hes always talking about the roe v. Wade and his impact on The End of roe v. Wade. But then when it comes to defining, for example, how hes going to vote in the florida amendment, on the six weeks Abortion Ban, he doesnt seem to be able to clarify a line of what it is that he believes dogmatically. Im wondering is that something that is affecting the former president . Yeah. I mean, i think you are putting it perfectly because what youre describing reveals that Donald Trump thinks about the issue of abortion and womens rights simply as a political tool to use, to his benefit or to dodge when he thinks it is hurting him. He doesnt view it as a Policy Issue with people behind it, not just women, families, again, and people who are affected by these things. He thinks of it in terms of how can i do mental gymnastics and what do i need to pull off in order to not offend the right people and placate those who want protections. The scary thing, of course, is that nobody really knows how he feels, so if hes reelected, the question is still on the table whether or not he would sign a national Abortion Ban into law, if republicans from congress send it to his desk. And, yamiche, also Last Night, Vice President harris was asked about being a gun owner. Heres what she said about that. Im a gun owner. Tim walz is a gun owner. The republican governor of ohio speaking out in a New York times oped today writing, as a supporter of former President Trump, and senator jd vance, i am saddened by how they and others continue to repeat claims that lack evidence and disparage the legal migrants leaving in springfield. This rhetoric hurts the city and its people. Nbcs Shaquille Brewster joins us now from springfield, where Last Night Vivek Ramaswamy held a Town Hall. What are you hearing from residents there . Reporter passions are definitely high and a word that continues to come up in my conversations is fear. There is fear from haitian immigrants, Fear And Retaliation for that rumor that has been debunked repeatedly by local officials here. And fear from everyday residents who cant go to a walmart or go to a Grocery Store and are then evacuated because of these wave of Bomb Threats that have come after those rumors were spread on the debate stage. But, as we heard at that Town Hall yesterday, there is also a lot of frustration, the influx of immigrants here, you have local officials saying did put a strain on city resources, things like education, on housing, on healthcare. That was something that you hear repeated at that Town Hall. I want you to listen to my conversation with two attendees of that Town Hall, just afterwards. Theyre eating the dogs and cats, i dont believe that was ever true. But it provided attention to our situation here and it has helped bring all the police in, the education, vivek is here, it brought national attention and international. Somebody he trusted told him about the dogs and cats, he bought into it, i guess, and it did happen in other towns from what i understand, but not springfield, and the story got misconstrued. Those are the claims you heard repeated by former president Donald Spokesperson pushed back on the oped we heard from ohios governor saying that he and Governor Dewine dont agree on every issue but saying that former President Trump and j. D. Vance will help to stop the chaos and will focus on the closing the border. Of course thats not addressing the root of those false claims that have put so much attention on this town. We have been talking about them for a while, jose. They were the ones at the border and they made it up to ohio, and theyre working. And so they thought finally things will settle down, and they would have a better life. So essentially weve just been talking to people, and playing a role a bit uncomfortable, trying to find resources for them, safety resources. And what i want to say, i want to acknowledge and thank Governor Dewine for his oped. Too few republicans are speaking out on this, and for the record, Governor Dewine has a long history with haiti. He has gone there many many times on mission trips. And so i welcome his leadership on this, really frankly. And, garry, The Haitian Times are not based in springfield but have you and your staff been impacted by this . We were doxxed and swatted on monday. Another collaborator helping us connect with the community in springfield, and they have received all kinds of threats. We have received some of the most vile emails or comments that you can imagine, and so, yeah, we are part of the story now, unfortunately, jose. And, you know, one of the things that the governor mentioned and that, you know, so many people have been underlining, is that these extraordinary migrants are here legally under Temporary Protected Status. If you would, garry, explain that to us . Jose, after the earthquake in 2010, the Obama Administration extended Temporary Protected Status to haitians who were here, and so that means that they are able to work. They have a social security, and function in a sort of like quasi legal way. They are legal but they dont have a permanent Residency Status yet. And then, you also have another program that President Biden initiated after the withdrawal from afghanistan and extended some special status to Afghan Americans who were living here undocumented. Then that was extended to ukrainians after the invasion, and it has been extended to haitians, and so you have a combination of people here under Cps Status and the program which we call the Biden Program in the community.
