It's a crying shame. I mean, my heart breaks for this community. When you have these positions, when you have that kind of microphone in front of you, you really ought to understand at a very deep level how much your words have meaning. Especially when you have been and then seek to be again president of the united states of america. Vice president kamala harris responding today to the vicious lies being told by trump and vance about migrants, immigrants, i should say, in springfield, ohio, as vance shamelessly calls on democrats, democrats, to tone down their rhetoric. Also tonight, the latino vote, as the star who endorsed trump faces backlash, enthusiasm for harris is driving a surge in registrations among young latinos. Plus, former cnn anchor don lemon joins me tonight on the indictment of sean diddy combs. The insanity of elon musk, and don's new book about the crisis of faith in america, and in his own life. But we begin tonight with a visit to the upside down. Because it is only there that donald trump may be able to get away with attempting to lay the blame for the violent state of our politics at the feet of vice president kamala harris and the democrats. If merriamwebster was looking for a new example to define the term gaslighting, they should look no further than trump's claim that the latest apparent assassination attempt against him is a direct result of the, quote, highly inflammatory language from the other side. And following that claim in his next breath, he goes on to use that same inflammatory language against them, saying, quote, these are people that want to destroy our country. It is called the enemy from within. They are the real threat. It's as if trump believes we all have a collective case of amnesia from, well, his entire lifetime of using that rhetoric against anyone and everyone who looks at him the wrong way. As the new york times and peter baker writes, trump is at the heart of today's eruption of political violence. Reminding readers that he has long favored the language of violence in his political discourse, encouraging supporters to beat up hecklers, threatening to shoot looters, and undocumented migrants. Mocking a near fatal attack on the husband of the democratic house speaker, and suggesting that a general he deemed disloyal be executed. While trump's running mate jd vance really tried hard yesterday to make his new boss proud. By making the case against the other side. We thought, you know, we would provide the receipts to james david about just who needs to tone down the incitement based on his high standards. I do think we should take this opportunity to call for a reduction in the ridiculous and inflammatory political rhetoric coming from too many corners of our politics. If comrade kamala harris gets four more years, you will be living a fullblown banana republic ruled by an anarchy and a tyranny. It's the people that surround her, they're scum. They're scum. And they want to take down our country. They are absolute garbage. You know the big difference between conservatives and liberals, is that no one has tried to kill kamala harris in the last couple of months. A virginia man was arrested on friday and charged with threatening to kill vice president kamala harris. Federal authorities have charged a man from memphis with making death threats against president biden and vice president harris. We can debate one another, but we cannot tell the american people that one candidate is a fascist and if he's elected it is going to be the end of american democracy. A radical left marxist communist fascist. Comrade is the best because it says she's a marxist, communist, fascist person, which she is a fascist. You know, she's a threat to democracy. If he ever got elected she would change it, and it will be the end of our country. Hmm, yes, the sweet smell of receipts. But the height of jd vance's hypocrisy is his inability to take any responsibility for the pain and fear he has subjected his own constituents to. Lies about the town of springfield, ohio, and its haitian immigrant community that have had real and frightening consequences. Today, children, little kids, elementary schoolers, entered school under the watchful eye of ohio state troopers who are stationed across all 17 buildings of the springfield school district on the orders of ohio governor mike dewine. Dewine said monday that at least 33 bomb threats have been made in springfield since the lies about the city and haitian immigrants were pushed by trump and vance. Dewine said the threats have been investigated and found to be hoaxes. But that doesn't absolve the people who have amplified or in their own words, created these stories from what they have foisted upon this town. One haitian immigrant who has lived in springfield for five years told usa today that the community feels targeted, quote, you can see it's pure hatred. They hate us. Meanwhile, donald trump is threatening to visit springfield, ohio, soon. Today, springfield's mayor said a trump visit would put an extreme strain on the town's resources. We did not have threats seven days ago. We did not have these concerns seven days ago. We do today. We would like those on the national stage that can bring peace, that can tamper their words and speak truth, that's what springfield is asking. Joining me now is david jolly, former republican congressman and msnbc political analyst. And jason johnson, professor of politics and journalism at morgan state university and an msnbc political contributor. I'm going to start with david since you have the disadvantage of not being here with us in the studio. Donald trump is beyond all of that, and i didn't even include the fact that it is jd vance who called him maybe hitler, he said trump may be hitler, but that's not in the montage. Here's trump today, trying to blame what happened to him in palm beach, florida, on the radical left. Well, there's a lot of rhetoric going on. A lot of people think that the democrats when they talk about threat to democracy and all of this, and it seems that both of these people were radical lefts. Yeah, here's the problem, david. Thomas crooks, the butler, pennsylvania, shooter was a registered republican. Ryan wesley routh from florida voted for donald trump in 2016, and then said he came to regret it. These are both republicans. Your thoughts. Yeah, joy. This is a week where i think the media has to take responsibility for having some very hard conversations. We understand the sensitivities around the second apparent assassination attempt of donald trump. But they don't get to rewrite history or rewrite facts. And you notice both jd vance and donald trump use the word rhetoric, violent rhetoric. Rhetoric is language which lacks meaningful content. When he reaches for imagery for calling vice president harris communist or socialist or marxist or when jd vance says your side tried to kill our side, that's rhetoric because it's lacking any meaningful content. When the left says donald trump is a threat to democracy, he is factually. Donald trump incited violence on january 6th to try to overturn an election. We saw that and we heard his words. We saw the people trying to hang mike pence. We saw the storming of the capitol encouraged by donald trump. We heard the phone call to the georgia secretary of state where he tried to overturn the vote. He has been indicted criminally in federal court under the charge of conspiracy to defraud the united states. Conspiracy to defraud the u. S. Voters. Conspiracy to deny rights. Those are actual threats to the democracy. I realize the language sounds harsh, but this is where it's responsible and incumbent upon us this week to actually stay true to the facts. Nobody cares how jd vance wants to frame this. He is playing the role of patsy right now for donald trump. The only person who wants to hear another word from jd vance is jd vance. Because all he is doing is continuing to spread misinformation this week. Indeed, and jason, there is just also an additional fact, it's the right wing proud boys, oath keepers, who are posing the greatest threat to democrat. That's not me, that's the fbi. The antidefamation league has a report, murder and extremism in the u. S. All of the extremist related murders in 2023 were committed by right wing extremists. 88% of killings were tied to white supremacist ideologies. 94% of extremist murders involved a firearm, and it's neo nazis who initially started the rumors about haitians in ohio. Jd vance might want to look to the people he hangs around with, including blurbing a book called unhumans and being white nationalist curious for being the source of the problem. This is a campaign strategy. That's what makes it the most disgusting. The only reason we're hearing about this now is donald trump believes the only way he can win this election and jd vance who has no soul and no spine, i said he's the ted cruz of ohio. Nobody really likes him, and it's a desperate attempt to rouse up angry white people because that's the only way they can win. What i think everybody needs to understand, what i think vice president harris understands, what i think tim walz understands, what i think national security, fbi, and now the mayor of a small town in ohio understand is that these people spark terrorism. There's an entire town in america right now where 50 days from an election that is living in fear because of the words that come out of donald trump's mouth. There is no excuse for this. There's no explanation for it that can be dressed up. We shouldn't be shocked because this is a man who is incapable of any level of accountability. Remember, during the debate, he said the january 6th was nancy pelosi and the mayor's fault. It was nancy pelosi's fault that he galvanized hundreds of people to march upon the capitol and try to hang his vice president. So i'm not surprised by any of this. I think the campaign rhetoric is disgusting. I think it is intentional. The most important thing that all americans can do at this particular point, besides what some of the people in springfield are doing, supporting their local community, is recognizing this rhetoric for what it is and not repeating it, not respecting it in the people who are saying it, and not pretending this is part of some policy discussion. They didn't want to talk about policy. They want to talk about hate, and that's what we have to remember. Let me play vice president harris. This was her comments today about bringfield at the najb conference. There were children, elementary cool children, who it was it was school photo day, who are dressed up in their best, got all ready. Knew what they were going to wear the night before. And had to be evacuated. Children. Children. A whole community put in fear. It's a crying shame, literally. What's happening to those families, those children in that community. And spewing lies that are grounded in tropes, that are age old. David jolly, you have young kids. You know, the idea that little kids in springfield, ohio, can't go to school without armed guards surrounding them is jd vance's fault. And he represents them in the united states senate. There's an election coming up in which his name will be on the ballot, and he will be being asked to be elevated to the vice presidency of the united states after doing that to children in his own state. And they expect republicans, particularly white republicans, to vote for him and in the senate race against sherrod brown. Should we expect better of the voters in ohio that they will not do that? right now, trump is leading in that state. If they go along with it and vote for him, what does that say about the republican voter base? this is a horrific moment for this campaign and for the country. And it was incited by jd vance and laura loomer and donald trump and others. I think, i believe it was last week, you and i discussed the emerging willy horton narrative that donald trump and jd vance would lay down. Perhaps this is it, the 2024 version of the willy horton ad and they're going to scare white america to say in this case legal immigrants who are contributing to our community are somehow a threat and then it brings out the proud boys and brings out the bomb threats and so forth. I would also say, though, for jd vance and donald trump, they don't escape as being the only people culpable. This is a reflection of today's republican party. I can draw a direct thread, joy, and you and jason will remember this, the word of kd britt and her response to the state of the union, were essentially black and brown people are coming into your white communities and you should be scared. She gave this speech about how terrifying it is to be a white woman because black and brown people might come into your neighborhood. This is not just this campaign strategy, the ethos of today's republican party. Very quickly, let me play a haitian community health and support center worker on the threats. I was talking to my friend recently and said one of the haitian guys got punched on his eye, so that's one thing we have to work on. We have been receiving a lot of complaints. People come to us, especially at this moment because people are afraid, and as you can tell, like most of the parents that would not send their kids to school. It's really, really bad here for this period of time. Jason, it's a campaign strategy, but not one without victims. Of course, trump and jd vance are walking out of a room with bloody hands saying you will not believe what happened in there, it's crazy, while they're smearing blood all over the place. The most important thing, we have 50 days. They're going to try this again. We have to remember as americans that we are stronger together. We have to remember as americans that our communities are built of immigrants, the same thing happened to irish people 70 years ago, 80 years ago. This is the same problem and we can fight back at the ballot box rather than giving these people the space to pretend that what they're doing as anything to do with functional democracy. You know what i want to know what someone thinks about it, usha vance. Thank you both very much. Coming up, a new postdebate poll shows kamala harris has her biggest lead yet over donald trump. So if you don't already have a plan to vote, now would be a good time to make one. After last week's debate, it appears vice president kamala harris is seeing a boost. A new poll out this morning has harris up six points over trump nationally. While another poll from the critical swing state of pennsylvania shows harris leading trump by three points, within the margin of error. Harris was actually in pennsylvania today for an interview with reporters from the national association of black journalists, which of course is the same group that trump gave an embarrassingly disastrous interview to in july, the one where he falsely claimed the vice president had only recently turned black. During her nearly hourlong sitdown, she addressed a number of topics including her policies on housing, child care, the war in gaza, and gun control. She was also asked about whether she has full confidence in the secret service following the latest assassination attempt against trump. Do you feel safe for you and your family? i do, but i mean, you can go back to ohio, not everybody has secret service. And there are far too many people in our country right now who are not feeling safe. I look at project 2025, and i look at, you know, like the don't say gay laws coming out of florida, members of the lgbtq community don't feel safe right now. Immigrants or people with an immigrant background don't feel safe right now, women don't feel safe right now. And so yes, i feel safe. I have secret service protection. But that doesn't change my perspective on the importance of fighting for the safety of everybody in our country. Joining me now are not one but two white house correspondents for the grillo, jarron keith gainer, one of three reporters who interviewed vice president harris today, and our friend april ryan, msnbc contributor. You were in the room. Let's talk about that answer, because it seemed that she did spend a lot of time turning her answers around to talk about her policies and turning it back on to the american people, not about her safety but about theirs. Your thoughts on that answer. I thought it was interesting that the vice president did that because we know that what happened with the whole springfield lie about haitian immigrants, it has changed real people's lives. I think it was an interesting ploy by the vice president to flip it back on her opponent, former president trump and jd vance. Putting the focus on actual communities and about the voters, because they're the ones who are going to decide this election. And you know, i think it was her goal, april, to make sure to use this platform to really sort of make her core points, no matter what she was being asked. This is one of our strongest ones. She came out of the gate talking about the economy. Four years ago, when we came in, we came in during the worst unemployment since the great depression. We came in during the worst public health epidemic in centuries. We came in after the worst attack on our democracy since the civil war. And a lot of it due in large part to the mismanagement by the former president. As it relates to covid and obviously january 6th. And we had then a lot of work to do to clean up a mess. It's important because particularly in black communities, there's a lot of mismemory about the economy. You know, it's so interesting. During covid and a little bit after, there was a misconception, there was reality versus perception, when it specifically came to issues like gas. You know politics is personal. There's nothing more personal than the pocketbook. And a lot of black people in black communities, they felt price gouging at the pump. And then in other communities, they felt the release of the strategic oil reserves, et cetera. Now, with this administration is trying to stop that price gouging that started during covid, during donald trump's time as president, and now we're seeing people still not feeling the effects, an impact of a relief. And so this, the economy, the economy, the economy is that number one issue that this administration has to hit along with abortion and some other issues. But the economy is the most personal thing, the pocketbook. I'm doing to come back to abortion in a moment. You asked a question that was interesting. This is vice president harris talking about one of the things of her campaign, my name, joy. There's sometimes when your adversaries will try to turn your strength into a weakness. Don't you let them. Don't you let them. I find joy in the american people. I find joy in optimism. In what i see to be our future and our ability to invest in it. I find joy in the ambition of the people. I find joy in the dreams of the people. I find joy in building community. I find joy in building coalitions. Why did you ask that question? you know, it was important for me to ask that question because one, i know in doing my research for this interview, the vice president had been using the joyful warrior term even years before she was vice president. She did an interview with ellen degeneres and she described herself as a joyful warrior. And this is obviously a theme of the harris/walz campaign that i think is resonating with voters. But also, because i know on the republican side, they have been using joy, her laughing and using that as a tool to suggest that she's not a serious candidate, particularly as a black woman, and the implications that that might give to voters. It was important for me to lift that up. And who doesn't love joy? exactly. I totally agree. Let's play one more. Abortion is the thing that republicans are trying to get people to not pay attention to. Let's be clear. They know it's a bad issue for them so they're trying to get haitian immigrants to be a scapegoat. Dangerous distraction. Here's vice president harris talking about the death of a woman in georgia because of abortion bans. I don't know if anyone here has heard most recently the stories out of georgia. Tragic story. About a young woman who died because it appears the people who should have given her health care were afraid they would be criminalized after the dobbs decision came down. Amber nicole thurman is the 28yearold black single mother in georgia who died from a severe infection because the hospital delayed a routine medical procedure because of the abortion ban. She died because of their sixweek abortion ban. There's not been a backlash in georgia to that yet. But there should be now. Black women, women are dying around this country because of abortion, and republicans just voted not to protect ivf. I hate to say this, but she's a black woman in the state of georgia. There's atlanta and then there's the rest of georgia. So of course, that's not going to make the news like it normally does. But let me tell you that white woman at the dnc convention that talked about her stepdad raping her, that resounded around the room. And people are like, oh, my goodness. I'm going to tell you, this is an example of how these red states view life. They view the baby but not the mother. Not the mother. Forced life at the expense of the mother. Yeah, and that is the policy. We'll see if there's any punishment for that from voters in november. Jarron and april, congratulations being on the panel. Thank you both very much. As american citizens, as puerto ricans as well, from donald trump, i think there's an element of collective amnesia on some puerto ricans including anuel and, you know, it's one of those things that is kind of shameful, but at the end othe day, everybody has to respond for their actions, and i think that those two rappers are paying dearly for their mistake right now. You know, what's interesting, and you talk about this a lot on your tiktok, which is one of the reasons i follow you, because it is an interesting question. Why brown and black folks gravitate toward someone who shows them such disdain. Donald trump has never shown anything but disdain for latino people, for mexicans, for puerto ricans. He's never shown any love. Why does he have such strong support from a contingeant of diehard fans in the community? yeah, well, unfortunately, the republican party, the gop, are masterful at lying and deceit. And unfortunately, there's a lot of latinos who take those lies as truth. That's a big, big problem in our community. We need to understand that when he calls vice president harris a communist, it's not really communism when they're the ones taking commie money, and they're the ones taking payments from russia. Not the democratic party and not us. So i think people especially latinos need to learn how to separate the grain from the chaff. When he speaks out there saying that latin america is not bringing in their best people, he doesn't mean only the people that are not good, but everybody. They never made that distinction, and i think as latinos, it's super offensive that we don't take claim to that understanding that an attack on some is an attack on all of us. You know, and you i know are familiar with, i grew up next door to aurora, colorado. And he's going to start it in springfield and says he's going to deport haitian immigrants also to venezuela. Of course, the machine that is full of lies, fox news and the republican party, has sold to everybody that there's a problem in aurora and that is not the case. The own police in aurora admitted no such thing has happened and they kept peddling that lie, same with asians eating animals when in reality none of that has happened. Late last night, new york officials took sean combs into custody. This morning, we found out why. The indictment alleges that between at least 2008 and the present, combs abused, threatened, and coerced victims to fulfill his sexual desires, protect his reputation, and conceal his conduct. As alleged in the indictment, to carry out this conduct, sean combs led and participated in a racketeering conspiracy. That alleged conspiracy included engaging in or attempting to engage in sex trafficking, forced labor, interstate transportation for purposes of prostitution, drug offenses, kidnapping, arson, bribery, and obstruction of justice. The indictment described sean inducing female victims and male sex workers into drugged up sometimes dayslong sexual performances dubbed freak outs. It lays out combs and his associates allegedly threatened his victims to keep them in line and help him cover it all up. Those threats included but were not limited to threatening to use firearms, hitting, kicking, and dragging victims. It also included hiding those injured victims so nobody would see them. His lawyer said that combs was cooperative and innocent. He pleaded not guilty late this afternoon. You'll remember that back in november, combsformer girlfriend cassie ventura filed a lawsuit claiming combs had beaten and raped her for years. The case was settled but months later, cnn aired hotel security footage showing combs punching and kicking ventura. The southern district of new york said that they had interviewed over 50 victims and witnesses and expect the number to grow. A judge ordered that combs remain in custody detained pending trial. Joining me now is my friend and fellow journalist don lemon. He has a new book on faith in america called i once was lost. We're going to talk about that in a moment. I've got to get your take, don, on this breaking news about diddy today. You know, it's really sad all the way around. Good evening, by the way. Thank you for having me on. It's sad all the way around. You have someone who was one of the biggest music moguls in the history of music and especially in the history of hiphop, elevated liphop to the level it is today, and all these victims coming forward, giving their stories for years. Many of them not believed. Cassie ventura i'm sure not believed until that awful videotape came out. Now, i did not have on my bingo card which everyone is talking about today the baby oil and all of that stuff. That's all great for memes, but this is very serious stuff. This is sex trafficking. It's gun charges. It's drug charges. It's rico charges. When you read the indictment, joy, it reads like lucosta noes raw. It's like a crime family. They called it the diddy combs, you know, what is it, enterprise? this is a mess that's going to go on for years. His attorney is right. This is going to go on for a while. And who knows what the outcome is going to be? but it looks like, you know, there are some pretty strong charges against diddy. It's awful, and sort of reminiscent of the r. Kelly, bill cosby, harvey weinstein. This thing where people know bad things are happening and no one says anything because the victims are seen as disposable, and until it's forced out into the open by a lawsuit or something else, these victims just get victimized. I don't know if you did, but i spoke to cassie's former makeup artist, who said that she witnessed one of the beatings. It was behind doors. She was doing the makeup. Diddy came in, they closed the door and she could hear her screaming. And she could hear the beating, and then she came out, and according to her, she was bruised and beaten and battered, and she ended up taking her to the hospital. I said why didn't you say anything? because it was my livelihood, i was afraid. She was afraid she wouldn't be believed and she wouldn't get another job. There you go. I have so much to ask you about. You did this interview with elon musk that is something. It's something to behold. I don't even know if i have time to play it. He essentially said we need to move on from racism. That interview, you landed that interview. Why do you think that he only realized after it was over that maybe it was a mistake for him to talk so freely and be himself? well, listen, i am an ongoing pending litigation with elon musk, so i have to be careful about what i say, and i really cannot talk about it, but what i will say is that i didn't think it was fair the way that i was treated and i will say i did not ask him anything that he had not addressed publicly that wasn't already out in the zeitgeist, so why he reacted the way he did, you have to ask him. I don't know. Lord only knows. Because he looked bad being himself. Let me play really quick, you did recently speak with a lot of black men supporting trump. Here it is. I have been talking to a lot of black men who say they're supporting donald trump. Who are you voting for? trump. Trump, man. You said trump? yes. I think the reason why, the money he gave away last time he was in office is what they're looking for again. What do you make of that inwhat do you make of black men, as disdainful as trump is to black people? i think you'll agree as a journalist, as american, you should have some knowledge before you say you're going to vote for them, before you go into the polling place. A lot of them said i liked him because he gave me the stimulus check and i am like, that did not come from donald trump. His name was on it. I came from a democratic congress and nancy pelosi. I do think that some of it is bravado and i also think that it is aspirational. Donald trump, devil may care. Flying around in airplanes, on gold toilets, beautiful women and all those things. I think maybe men who don't have agency that white men have in society, maybe it is aspirational to them and they want to be like him and therefore they say they will vote for him. And he is doing it all bankrupt while killing even his new social media company which is also going to be bankrupt. He bankrupts everything. Don't go anywhere, because we will talk about his new book, i once was lost, my search for god in america, when we come right back. Right back. Hingrix is proven over 90% effective. (♪♪) don lemon has lived an incredible life and in his latest book he shares his journey and beautiful prose from his earliest memories setting and shiloh missionary baptist church surrounded by the powerful women in his life to his time as one of broadcasting's first openly gay black anchors. He writes as a gay man i have a complicated relationship with the bible. As a black man i have a complicated relationship with flag, with tribal politics and it is clear to me that america and i are experiencing a parallel crisis of faith, an unsettling disconnect precipitated by the gamification of right and wrong and the fragile nature of faith itself. My friend don lemon is back with me. You are a wonderful writer that is something people don't know about you. I love reading your writing. Why did you write this book and what is the conflict we are facing is a culture? this book is about my relationship with god, my love for god and this country. Faith really empowered me to overcome the toxic teachings that evangelicals used to radicalize me and i think that we are having, the country is having a crisis of faith and what i mean by that when i say the gamification of truth, we can't even come to a consensus of what truth is and religion has quite frankly, it has infected our politics and our country that is harmful. We are not just blurring the line between church and state, i think evangelicals are trying to erase it and i think if we move to theocracy that moves us further away from god and further away from democracy. So i had to say something and this is the way i chose to do it. You grew up in the church and as a church girl myself, that presents some conflict because you are not necessarily affirmed for who you are, especially you as a gay man in that context. When you look at evangelicals who are literally donald trump space. 80% voting for him, crazy. That make sense to you? you understand why? i understand why. I think they believe he speaks for them and there is this weird thing about god is using him or whatever. I don't believe that. I don't believe god is using him. I believe people are using scripture and god and twisting it in the way that it wants to be twisted. That is nothing new, but what i write in the book is i think people keep trying to shape god into their own image. When they look in the mirror they want to see god, instead of trying to find the image of god and their fellow man and i think that is what is amiss in this country. We should be looking for the image of god in our brothers and sisters instead of ourselves and we should get away from the selfish nature of our religion and our faith right now. Do you consider yourself a religious or spiritual and will we learn that in this book? spiritual. Spiritual. I don't consider myself religious. Many people who are not affirmed by the church, why would i want to go and be part of something that demonizes me? that says that i am an abomination. I don't believe that is what the scripture says and that is not the god that i serve, so i am not an active churchgoer right now, but i am certainly a christian and i certainly do unto others as i would have them do unto me, which is really the golden rule. That is how i treat people and i think of other people develop that sort of relationship with their faith and with their god, we would all be much better. It is about digging in, treating people the way you want to be treated and actually be accepting of people instead of pushing people away. I called jesus in this book, the biggest stirrer of the mall and that is the image that i choose to see in myself, that i am a big stirrer. I love you, don lemon. This is why we love you. Hold up the book, we are going to sell some books right now, don lemon. Thank you. Joy, let me tell you i love you, you are the best. You are a dear friend and an amazing broadcaster. I watch you
