You see one of them here, little Kids Head to school, and then two of them, two of the 36 that are across the Springfield District after the governor said there have been 33 Bomb Threats in the last several days. Six of them to schools, all of them determined to be hoaxes. It is the latest fallout from baseless accusations that Donald Trump repeated during last Weeks President ial debate that haitian immigrants in the city are abducting and eating neighborhood pets. The governor, local officials, they all say there is no evidence. Now, Jd Vance, who first launched the claim into the national spotlight, is claiming it is democrats who need to tamp down the rhetoric. All of us, and i promise i will do my part to tone down the rhetoric, but in particular, the people telling you that Donald Trump needs to be eliminated, you guys need to cut it out or youre going to get somebody hurt. And Nbcs Maggie Vespa is reporting on this story also joining us stewart stevens, chief strategist for mitt romneys 2012 campaign, and former democratic congresswoman of maryland, Donna Edwards, an msnbc political analyst. Okay, congresswoman, so, i was looking at the visual of these kids, and some of them as little as kindergartners, now having to walk to school, under protection. I think it can bring to mind Ruby Bridges during desegregation, right . Needing protection to go into a school, the threat to little kids of color. Is this what we need to accept as the norm now . Well, it should not be accepted as the norm. This is really shameful that you have little kids who are under the threat of bombs in their schools, being escorted by State Troopers. Threats to not only schools, but hospitals and government buildings and universities. Students having to change their schedules because of Bomb Threats, and i think it really is directly attributable to this false story that Donald Trump and his Running MateJd Vance continue to promote about haitian immigrants, and, you know, i think it is just really shameful and their rhetoric is directly causing these threats to little children and to school buildings, and they need to cut it out. So, maggie, how is this all complicating law Enforcements Job . Yeah, i mean, it is overwhelming them, chris. We heard that days ago from the mayer who told us The Local Police Departments and sheriff deputies were the ones handling this thus far. They have major backup with these State Troopers and were also told bombsniffing dogs on hand across thety. Also, Ohios Department of homeland security, they have been tapped to come in, the governor said yesterday, basically evaluate all the N Town to figure out which ones are the most vulnerable. And, you know, one thing i want to point out, that Word Hoax that the governor used yesterday, we had gotten a lot of comments online, people saying, see, they were hoaxes, therefore this isnt really as taxing or isnt as bad as it initially seemed for Law Enforcement or for springfield. A hoax doesnt mean a threat didnt come in. The threat came in, it just means that Law Enforcement didnt find a bomb or a device, but in order to say that, that means the building still had to be closed and a lot of cases schools, some cases hospitals, college campuses, and they still had to do a sweep and that is a very taxing thing for Law Enforcement. It also means that a lot of families were scared. And they dont feel safe in their city and that goes double, chris, for haitian families, many of whom have told us they fear for their lives right now in springfield. So, stewart, Donald Trump and Jd Vance have not backed down on their claims around springfield, ohio, despite local officials repeatedly correcting the record, despite what were seeing the threat that surrounds as donna rightly pointed out many different places, but to see those visuals outside an Elementary School is so striking. What are they getting out of it . Well, look, i think this is at the root of the whole trump and trumpism. How do they launch his campaign with birtherism . Which is just a form of hate. And he continued it with the muslim ban in december of 2015. It is the Driving Force behind trumpism is Anger And Hate and fear. And they seized on this community to victiize and to do stir up more hate and anger. I just have to wonder, in the past, in america, there have been waves of anger against indian americans. Is this how would Jd Vance if it was his kids going to school and this sort of hatred was being stirred by a president ial candidate or a major political figure . I mean, it is completely shameful. And it shows just how far the Republican Party has fallen. That so few people are speaking out against this. Congresswoman, as we watch what has been unfolding in springfield, i want to also talk about the facts surrounding the Assassination Attempts on Donald Trump. Heres more of Jd Vance who is suggested, again, it is democrats fault. You know the big difference between conservatives and liberals is that we no one has tried to kill Kamala Harris in the last couple of months, and two people now have tried to kill Donald Trump in the last couple of months. Id say thats pretty strong evidence that the left needs to tone down their rhetoric and needs to cut this crap out. Somebody is going to get hurt by it and it is going to destroy this country. So, lets talk about what investigators say about those two attempts. The shooter in the first attempt was found to have just wanted to murder a president ial candidate. And the latest gunman has been all over the political spectrum, hes had varying number of causes over the years. But how much do facts matter in this time of 2024, where misinformation is so easily pedaled and amplified . Look, i am not about blaming the victim. Any kind of political violence is unacceptable. You do have to ask, though, why it is that Donald Trump has been the one president ial candidate and Jd Vance really spewing this hatred and the anger and the vitriol and suggesting and calling for political Violence And Violence in response to what should happen at the ballot box. Across the board, democrats, whether it is President Biden or Vice President harris and others have repeatedly said that violence has no place, no acceptable place in our democracy. Thats the tone we want to strike, i think as long as the vitriol continues to come from Donald Trump and that camp, that it is not a surprise to me that whether theyre lone actors or, you know, if there is a conspiracy, that it engendered that kind of violent response and the problem is that when you have people who can act on their own, it really you really have no control except the language that you use and i would suggest that former President Trump and his Running Mate really tone down their suggestions of violence because we dont know what a lone actor out there might do. And it is really just unacceptable. Stewart, at least according to a source who is familiar with Donald Trumps planning, he is still thinking about going to springfield, ohio. Does that make sense to you . If you were, lets say, if you were running his campaign, i know thats a far fetched notion, but if you were running his campaign, can you think of a reason to do that . I think the Trump Campaign is lost. If youre trying to use what may have been an attempted assassination for political gain and what was an attempted assassination for political gain, thats an indication you really dont have any positive method that is attracting new voters. Theyre trying to harm me is not a compelling message. To go to springfield, hes not going to get any new voters. No one is going to go there and go, now i get it, now i understand it, it is just going to stir up the same anger that is driving his base of support. In a highly detailed newly unsealed 14page indictment, prosecutors allege that Music Mogul Sean combs, known as Puff Daddy or diddy, quote, abused, threatened and coerced women and others around him to fulfill his sexual desires, protect his reputation, and conceal his conduct. It goes on to say he created a criminal enterprise that engaged in Sex Trafficking, forced labor, kidnapping, arson, Bribery And Obstruction of justice. Federal prosecutors from the Southern District Of New York accused combs of forcing victims into Sex Acts he allegedly called freakoffs. The freakoffs sometimes lasted days at a time, involved multiple commercial sex workers, and often involved a variety of narcotics, such as ketamine, Eke Ecstasy and ghb to help keep them obedient and compliant. Combs who was arrested last night at a Manhattan Hotel denies the allegation. His lawyer says he plans to plead not guilty in court during an arraignment next hour. Joining me now is former Prosecutor And Msnbc legal analyst kristen gibbons fedden, she helped prosecute the case against bill cosby, and former Prosecutor Christine Greenburg prosecuted Sex Crimes as a assistant u. S. Attorney for the Southern District Of New York and msnbc legal correspondent Lisa Rubin is with me on set. Lets talk about the charges and related to the depths of them is that we just learned that the defense is proposing a 50 Million bond in an attempt to get their client released. I think the fact that theyre proposing a 50 Million bond speaks to how serious the charges against Sean Combs are. Lets go through them from top to bottom. The first is a racketeering conspiracy charge, im sure when some of our viewers hear that, their eyes glaze over. That means Sean Combs built an enterprise consisting of his businesses, but also a personal employees and people loyal to him to help him basically accomplish these Sex Crimes with which hes been charged. And not only did they help him accomplish the Sex Crimes, they did a bunch of other criming with him according to prosecutors in order to cover it up or to keep his victims silent. Hes also been charged, chris, with Sex Trafficking, under Force Or Coercion or transportation with the intent to engage in prostitution. And critical to the allegations are the severity of the violence alleged. Use of guns, forced drugging, arson, and kidnapping, all alleged and throughout this indictment and the Detention Letter that prosecutors sent to the judge today, where they outlined in 16 pages why Sean Combs should not be released from federal custody prior to his trial. Thats why you see Sean Combs and his lawyers saying, well put up a 50 Million bond package, consisting of a 48 Million home that i own outright and other things. So, i want to play some of what we heard earlier from prosecutors. This office is determined to investigate and prosecute anyone who engages in Sex Trafficking, no matter how powerful or wealthy or famous you may be. No one should doubt our commitment on that. A year ago, Sean Combs stood in Times Square and was handed a key to new york city. Today, hes been indicted and will face justice in the Southern District Of New York. So, to me, honestly, that sounds pretty straightforward. Then i read the indictment. And the level of depravity that is just alleged there, that is described there, it certainly is nothing ive ever seen, but you have the experience, put it into context for us. Yeah, so, what happens is, you know, i think one of the things that is interesting, chris, and he was actually asked this at the Press Conference about, okay, if you have this indictment, that outlines this depravity, how is it that just a year prior you give him the key, how is it that we didnt know that any of this was going on . And one of the things i think is really important is that throughout the preDetention Letter, they talked to, i think they said they gave around 300 Grand Jury subpoenas, spoke to around 50 victims and witnesses, who are able to really substantiate or corroborate one another, with the allegations that are set forth in this indictment. So i think one thing how did this go on so long . You have to remember that sexual assault, particularly when it is against someone as powerful as Puff Daddy, particularly when you have the facilitation of some type of intoxicants, talking about ketamine, all of those drugfueled parties and then you go up against someone whose reputation is such that he was awarded the key to the city, you have a very large power imbalance, which further levels on to that coercion, and further forces victims to be silenced. So that level of depravity, even though it is so horrific, can really cause it to be silenced when you have someone as powerful as Puff Daddy. Yeah, to be honest with you, again, when i read through it, it was, like, how did this go on for so long, again, allegedly, and no one spoke up or i mean, there have been other cases in the past related to him, but let me ask you what you as someone who has prosecuted Sex Crimes at the sdny, what stands out to you in the indictment . One thing i would say in prosecuting Sex Trafficking cases, oftentimes theyre undetected for decades, like this one. I unfortunately have prosecuted Sex Trafficking cases that have gone on for decades. And a lot of the reasons why the victims dont Say Anything earlier are even when the facts are different across cases, the ultimate reasons tend to be the same. Because these traffickers know that they can instill a Culture Of Fear and that prevents them from speaking up. Here you had force, you had violence, you had u. S. Attorney Damian Williams saying that these victims felt they could not leave because their own security was at risk if they did. And there is actual Video Evidence of that, when one of the victims was trying to leave a hotel room, trying to leave one of those freakoffs, and what happened . Sean combs violently beat her. That is on tape. So, to the extent any juror, any member of the public questions, well, why didnt she leave, you can see the evidence of why she didnt leave sooner. It is right there on tape. I will say that in terms of looking at this indictment, and looking at the Detention Letter submitted by the prosecutors here, this is among the strongest Sex Trafficking cases i have seen because you have the conduct on tape, these freakoffs are on tape, found in videos, in Sean Combs own personal devices. You have recorded calls, where he has been trying to have them engage in a false narrative to conceal his the evidence of the crime, once it was determined that the Law Enforcement officials were looking into this. That evidence is damning. In addition to having the victims coming forward, and corroborating one anothers accounts, the fact that you have Video Evidence, they can see and hear mr. Combs threatening and hurting victims, i mean, this case really seems incredibly strong. So given that, given the details, given the strength of the case, that the prosecutors say they have, lisa, what will the judge consider if they offer this 50 Million so he can be free while this case is going to trial . You know, as Christie And Kristen know well, the dangerousness of the individual to the community as well as the Likelihood Thaty will and have the capacity to flee are two factors that a judge considers. One of the things that Sean Combs lawyers have told the judge is acknowledging that he owns a plane. They say that there is a letter of intent to sell that plane and as part of that, he wont take the plane right now, but where you have a defendant who owns private aviation, the capacity to flee is there. The other thing is that the dangerousness of Sean Combs should not be underscored. In addition to the allegations of literally hitting, dragging, kicking his victims, im reading from the Detention Letter now, there is an incident where he and a coconspirator kidnapped an individual at Gun Point to facilitate Breaking And Entering into the residence of another. Approximately two weeks later, according to prosecutors, coconspirators set fire to that Individuals Vehicle and that multiple witnesses would testify to the defendant, meaning Sean Combs, bragging about his role in destroying individual ones car. Is not a white Collar Defendant who has committed alleged securities fraud, this is a person who is a danger to the community and a danger to women according to the Southern District Of New York, chris. We have less than a minute. But let me ask you, kristen, what happens today, What Happens Next . So, today the judge will most likely determine whether or not he will detain Puff Daddy or whether he will allow him to remain on the streets as we say, with certain Bail Conditions in tact. Hes either going to put him right to jail or say, hey, you got to sell that plane, you got to surrender your passport, there may be certain things in place such as electronic Monitoring Or Anything along those lines, but i think that there is a strong case for him to be detained throughout the criminal proceedings. This is the most impressive kinetic operation ive ever seen in my career. And i spent a lot of time in the middle east, involved in things like this, but not on this scope or this scale. It seems to me that israel has now achieved almost total Intelligence Dominance over hezbollah. If you recall, you know, after october 7th, the israeli Intelligence Community was reeling but they have come back. Everything from the July Strike that killed a senior Hezbollah Deputy in lebanon to the preemptive israeli strike several weeks ago and now this. This really brings hezbollah to its knees, not decapitation strike, because people were not killed, but incapacitation. The Real Question is why did israel choose to do this incredibly audacious operation, why did they choose to do it now . What are the options here . So i think there is two things that could be considered. This is operational preparation for the environment, ope, that israel is prepping to move into lebanon, rendering hezbollah or incapacitating hundreds if not more of their fighters. There is probably something else here. This is a message, a clear message that israel is can escalate in order to deescalate, showing hezbollah how much they have been compromised and saying, look, you dont want war, this is what we can do. The Real Question then is what will hezbollahs response, they have announced publicly theyre going to respond. This is a tremendous blow that israel has achieved. In my world, really unprecedented. So, what can you add to this and what is the situation in the ground in lebanon right now . Reporter as you said this is a major public Health Emergency in lebanon. You 2700 people injured, hundreds of them in critical condition after these hundreds of pagers, all exploded, simultaneously, around 3 30 beirut time. Were seeing images from Emergency Rooms and hospitals across lebanon where you have just dozens and dozens of men and they all have these identical injuries, similar to what that man on the screen suffered. They are these small blast wounds on their sides, where these pagers were either being held in their pockets, on their belts, in some kind of side satchel, so far, there are nine confirmed fatalities, but as mark said, you have just an absolutely enormous number of hezbollah operatives, both in their strongholds in southern beirut, and also along the israeli border, who have suffered serious injuries, and it is not clear when or if these people will be able to rejoin the fight. We should say Lebanons Health Ministry is saying at least several children have been killed in these blasts. These appear to be kids who were next to people carrying these pagers at the time. The israeli government is refusing to comment one way or another about whether it was responsible for what it does appear to be just an unprecedented intelligence operation. But we know that the head of the israeli military is holding consultations with his top generals right now and israel is bracing for a potential Hezbollah Response when israel assassinated that senior commander in beirut back in july, hezbollah did attempt to respond with a large scale rocket attack. Israel carried out a preemptive attack on its own which slightly blunted the scale of that assault. But i can tell you people here in Tel Aviv are simultaneously admiring what does appear to be a successful israeli operation, but they are also bracing for what they fear could be a large scale retaliation. Well, i think that, you know, we might see kind of this continued hezbollah efforts to strike the north. Israel yesterday announced that one of their war aims now is to return their citizens, 70,000 of whom cannot go back to their homes in the north, we might see hezbollah increase or keep up these rocket attacks. There is also the question of i think at this point, hezbollah is reeling and the Real Question is would they or will they understand that israel will really incur a very harsh price on them for anything more. I do think this was a message sent from the israelis that there needs to be a solution in the north. If hezbollah is going to make a move, how quickly do you think that might come, mark . Again, it is a question of how much are they degraded right now, how many have been taken off the battlefield, what part of the Command And Control has been taken or hospital or perhaps even killed. We just dont know. Again, israeli Intelligence Community, u. S. Intelligence community will be laser focused, messages sent as well for deescalation, but if this was israels attempt to deescalate, i think many international partners will push this. The question is, of course, what will hezbollah do, not only in the shortterm, but in the longterm as well. It is hard to put a specific number to it, but we are really looking at Tens Of Thousands of people registering this week, and really optimistic that well get there. And we know, because we have been talking about it throughout this campaign, you dont even need Tens Of Thousands in some cases to switch a state, right . But how do you turn these registrations then into actual votes . Thats a great question. And i think thats also a really good point. One of the conversations were having with the young voters in particular is reminding your vote has power, your voice is powerful, and some elections are decided in as few as six votes. When were talking about the power of your voice and in the context of this election, it can really make a huge impact. One of the things that we look at is how, One To get the Voter Registration numbers as high as possible, and then as we go into october, we are really looking to make voting a celebration, to make it joyful and a community experience. Were going to be hosting hundreds of parties at early polling locations, with our local organizers and partners on the ground to engage, and activate and ultimately turn that into action, which is voting. And in 2020, we exceeded the national average in terms of turnout and im excited to see us beat that this time. So you did mention the cast of hamilton. And i think, you know, one of the things were really excited about and i think what that clip of the Hamilton Cast and as a recovering Theater Nerd i am just so excited for partnerships like that, that really fuse educational information, a real clear story about why we vote, and the issues that we care about, and in a very clear and urgent call to action, and get that out on a national platform and moment. And were seeing that replicated through the amplification that our ambassadors and our cochairs are doing.
