The mayor of springfield, ohio, as State Troopers are called in to guard schools after multiple Bomb Threats as Trump And Vance fuel false claims about haitian immigrants. Good day, everyone, im Andrea Mitchell in washington. Music Mogul Sean combs is about to be arraigned in New York at 2 30 this afternoon on federal charges after years of alleged sexual assaults. Combs used force, threats of force, and coercion to cause victims in engage in extended sexual performances with male sexual performers some of whom he transported over state lines. They believe they had couldnt refuse combs. Combs is inside the federal courthouse, facing three Felony Counts of racketeering, Sex Trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution. The grand Jury Indictment alleges that combs used his Business Empire to sustain an international commercial Sex Enterprise to fulfill his sexual desires and protect his reputation in an alleged scheme lasting decades. The indictment indicates that at least two unnamed women have been interviewed. The Indictment Details socalled Freak Offs, sometimes days long Sex Performances that combs arranged, directed, Masturbated During and often electronically recorded, also accusing him of drugging his victims so they would comply. Agents seized narcotics and more than 1,000 bottles of Baby Oil and lubricant, video of the encounters and firearms, including three ar15s with defaced Serial Numbers ceased from his homes. His team insists he is innocent. According to the indictment, the mogul uses his businesses and employees to carry out, facilitate and cover up and abuse for commercial sex. When you read the indictment, you certainly wonder whether anybody else will be indicted or apprehended in this case. Obviously, federal prosecutors believe that they have discovered a conspiracy of silence, part of why it went on so long, stretching back really almost two decades. The coercion, the physical abuse, Sexual Abuse, manipulation through drugs and money. Its a stunning amount of detail. His lawyers maintain his innocence. They have indicated that he will plead not guilty when he is arraigned today in court. Laura, this appears to be hiding in plain sight. For years. When you read the indictment, you understand why. He had people on his payroll we have seen cases like this before used to keep women silent, compliant, and to make them fearful. You showed the images, the arstyle weapons. He had them for a reason. Prosecutors would say he had them there for intimidation. Certainly, thats the kind of evidence that will be very powerful in front of a jury many manhattan. The billions of dollars involved, the power he held in the Entertainment Industry for so long, for decades. He has launched so many careers. He was even given a Key To The City of New York. He was also declared a billionaire in 2022 from liquor to a clothing line. He started a Tv Network called revolt entertainment. When you look at the indictment, they talk about how his Business Empire enabled him to allegedly cover up this behavior for years. It goes back to 2009. They talk about threats of force. They talk about him bringing over Sex Workers allegedly internationally and crossing them all across the united states. They talk a lot about cassie ven ventura, the video of her being beaten up. That was made public in may by cnn. They talk about that here. They say that they are not done. They encouraged others to come forward. They made it sound like it could be open to potentially some arrests. They do say that he did not do this on his own. Let me circle back. If the Control Room can show the pictures again. It was September 2023 when mayor adams gave him the keys to the city. He was such a big Deal Celebrity in times square. He was given the keys. You saw mayor adams in some of the photos. He returned the key in june when they were closing in on him. If we could go back to the original stills that we showed a few minutes ago. I want to point out he was celebrated everywhere in hollywood and New York. He, himself, was a Grammy Award winning artist. He launched the careers of so many. He had bad Boy Entertainment. His girlfriend was signed to his label. He worked with numerous individuals. This was somebody that he surpassed artists. He was a producer. He was a entrepreneur. He broke the ceiling for individuals in the Music Industry to show that you could be more than just behind the scenes or in front of the microphone, that you could parlay that into billionaire status. He created a Tv Network called revolt. He served on multiple boards. He had a successful clothing line. He had a very successful Alcohol Brand that was acquired that made him a very wealthy man. It was incredibly embarrassing for him, i could imagine, when he had to give back the Key To The City. When you look at the three charges that are against him, when you talk away Sex Trafficking and look at the charges and bad Boy Entertainment and how this sweeping indictment says that he was not alone and that other people helped him cover up his behavior for years. He silenced victims. As somebody who has covered harvey Weinstein And R. Kelly and these cases where so many people ask, how do people remain silent for so long, how is this behavior able to be covered up so long . Its because of power. People are scared to speak out. People are terrified to come forward. Its not just criminal charges that he is facing. There are also all of these mounting civil suits. If you read the civil suits, there are ten right now, and im assuming potentially more to come, a lot of the allegations in this indictment, you see that in a lot of the civil suits. It will be interesting to see, especially if they detain him. You heard the united States Attorney say today, come forward if you know something. Come forward quickly. It Sounds Like they would probably be pretty quick to try to move this to trial. Catherine, lets talk about some of the details in this speaking indictment. The extraordinary details. The possibility that witnesses could be threatened is likely whats going to take place. Lets show our own Julia Ainsley asking a question of the u. S. Attorney as to whether more indictments, more charges could come. I cant tell you why it took so long. I think the better focus is on the fact that we are here today. You said we are not done and that combs did not do this alone. Do you foresee there could be other charges related to this case . Im not taking anything off the table. What does that tell you, catherine . That tells me once the powerful person like this is charged, which happened with harvey weinstein, the floodgates open. Other victims who were terrified or were intimidated might feel freer now that mr. Combs has been indicted and is innocent until proven guilty, but is indicted. He did not do this alone. I expect some of the people who helped him are cooperating with the u. S. Attorneys office. They provided the evidence that helped indict mr. Combs. Not just the victims. They are probably cooperators who are helping him. There will be other people, other victims who remember that person, that person helped sean sexually abuse me, drug me. When you read the indictment, ghb is known as a date rape drug. He used that. Oxycodone is an addictive opioid. They werent allowed to go to the doctor. They were hidden. He had so much allegedly control over these victims. The Term Freak offs. Never heard of that. It will be known as the persistent and pervasive Sexual Abuse of people. Thats allegedly what Sean Combs did to these people. Mainly women who were the victims. Also men who were brought in as Sex Workers. These are the u. S. Attorney did not state, but he is facing, Sean Combs, a minimum of 15 years on the Sex Trafficking charge if he were to be found guilty. These are very serious charges. Lisa, lets talk about the victims, particularly the women who did not come forward. Explain the level of threat that they lived under. According to this indictment, the level of Threat And Coercion that these people lived under we are having trouble with lisas microphone. Hoping that you and the Control Room can hear me. The level of coercion that these women lived under cannot be underscored. Every aspect of their lives was controlled and monitored. He monitored their medical records. He plied them with drugs. He concealed them and hid them away and made them fear their financial security and their physical security was dependent on him. In one case, he is alleged to have pointed a gun at one of his female victims. Thats a facts we dont see in the indictment itself. Just a few moments ago, the u. S. Attorneys office filing a 16page Detention Letter arguing why Sean Combs should remain in pretrial detention. Some of the evidence that they cite includes the fact that he racked up 46,000 in damage to a Hotel Penthouse following one of these Freak Offs. Things like that show that the u. S. Attorneys office has been thorough and methodical in building this case. The Racketeering Charge is critical to that. The fact that combs did not do this all on his own. Combined with the searches that they did of his Los Angeles and miami homes, it allowed them to not only talk to a number of victims and witnesss, but collect everything from drugs and guns to as he said during the press conference, images and videos of the Freak Offs themselves. As you mentioned, we are told that the suspect in this incident spent 12 hours outside of this Golf Course and was not spotted until a Gun Barrel was seen by a secret Service Agent about a hole in front of the former President And Shot at the suspect now identified as ryan ruth. There are questions around the Security Presence. They said there was not any consistent Sweep Arndt Perimeter because as you mentioned, this was an off the record incident. The federal investigation is moving forward. S the suspect faces two charges. Ron desantis is calling for a statelevel investigation. He is making claims about the charges. But he is raising doubts about the federal Governments Ability to carry out a fair investigation, considering the charges and the criminal proceedings the former president has been facing. Donald trump, he is not missing a beat blaming the democrats for this second apparent Assassination Attempt. He is writing on Social Media, not even 24 hours after the incident, quote, the rhetoric lies as exemplified by the false statements made by comrade Kamala Harris during the highly partisan debate. The bullets are flying and it will only get worse. Theres a lot of inflammatory stuff there. J. D. Vance is blaming the democrats. To connect the democratic candidates with socalled the bullets that are flying is totally false. They have been denouncing violence. Reporter exactly. President biden and Vice President harris over the last two days have made a concerted effort to try to lower the political temperature and the rhetoric. They are condemning anything that resembled political violence. They did so fairly quickly after we saw what unfolded on sunday. That has been where they have had to focus and where they want the messaging to be. We did see the White House condemn some language from Elon Musk On X where he had posted and raised these questions about potential Assassination Attempts against the current sitting president and Vice President that he later deleted. The White House is calling that out as irresponsible rhetoric, that even if Elon Musk claims he was joking, thats not anything that should be joked about. Thats how they are choosing to message on this front. They dont want to get into a back and forth on exactly every word that Donald Trump has uttered, that has contributed to some of that inflammatory rhetoric in the view of the harris campaign. Instead, we heard a little bit from governor walz, the vice President S Running Mate, on this in terms of his reaction and how he views the climate. Politics is about everyone matters and everyone is welcome. Thats what we know. The Vice President often says this. It seems like such a simple thing but its a lesson that Donald Trump could learn on this. Leaders arent the people who beat others down. Leaders are the ones who lift people up. Reporter stressing that words do matter here. Then putting a focus on the policy. Thats what you have seen from the president and Vice President in terms of trying to ensure Secret Service can get the resources it needs to carry out their critical mission. Peter, its been less than 48 hours since this happened. The attempted assassination, the very speedy arrest. He was lying in wait for 12 hours. The trumps Campaign Narrative is blame the democrats. I mean, we should start by saying we dont know for sure what motivated the suspect who was arrested in florida on sunday. What we see in two attempted assassinations is were in a different era. Its not that there hasnt been political violence. But there has. To see two in such a short order stands out. It comes at the same time we see Bomb Threats in springfield, ohio, following the former President Trumps comments about haitian migrant there. The governor said there have been 33 Bomb Threats forcing evacuations of schools and public buildings. We have come to a moment in history where political violence may not be accepted, but it seems to be expected. It seems to be part of our dialogue. The former president wants to blame democrats. He voices various things they have said about him. He is a threat to the nation, a threat to democracy. He says thats inflammatory. In the same breath, he says, they are trying to destroy our country and are the enemies within. That seems pretty commensurate. Now he is not just the instigator of political violence but a potential target. Ashley, its not only Donald Trump. We pointed out that j. D. Vance is trying to blame democrats for this without any evidence in the wake of the second attempt. Listen to what he had to say at the Faith And Freedom Coalition Dinner in atlanta last night. The strategy seems to be to blame the democrats because Donald Trump as a victim was one of their most successful moments in the campaign going into the rnc, but also to deflect criticism of Donald Trumps rhetoric. As we all know, Donald Trump loves to be a victim. More than that, having covered him since the beginning of 2016 and even 2015, another thing i have reported on and observed is that often his superpower is his shamelessness. When he is doing something, when he is ratcheting up dark and dangerous rhetoric, when he is inciting violence, when he is telling groups like the proud boys to stand back and stand by, when he is talking about charlottesville and saying theres very good people on both sides, in all of those moments, he likes to accuse his owe poe opponents of the very thing he is doing, which peter pointed out. Donald trump is using extreme rhetoric. Its not surprising that following this pattern of his behavior he would seek to accuse the democrats of the very same thing. Monica, peter, ashley, thanks. Ohios Republican Governor has deployed 36 State Troopers to schools in springfield after Bomb Threats at schools, City Hall and hospitals, following the viral false stories about the towns haitian immigrants. Authorities report at least 33 Bomb Threats since Donald Trump, j. D. Vance and others have repeated that baseless conspiracy adding fuel to it, about haitian immigrants supposed by stealing and eating peoples pets, completely false. I want to say its been difficult. Our community is very concerned about the threats that we have received. I want to just thank the governor and the state of ohio for stepping up and helping us. One of his goals i want to echo that was to bring normalcy back in. Thats why we have troops sent here to secure our School Buildings. Originally, the governor was helping us with our operation in helping have our road safer, because we have seen an uptick. Troops are being sent to springfield not because of the immigrants here but because of the threats we have received. What is your message to republican leaders, including the standard bearers, who are insisted he heard 911 calls . Let me say im elected as a nonpartisan mayor. My goal is to represent the community. My simple message i have said this before if you have the national stage and you are a national politician, please understand the words that you are saying have great weight in how they can negatively affect a community like springfield, ohio. I ask it would quiet down. We need help, not hate. We need peace. These immigrants, there are 15, 20,000 haitians invited because of a workforce was needed and they could get less expensive Housing And Standard of living, so these are legal immigrants. It has, according to a lot of people who have been interviewed, it has impacted the infrastructure and the Support Systems there. You are dealing with this as any community of 75,000 perhaps would . Yes. They were not invited by the city of springfield. This was not a program that we were involved with by any means. This was the immigrants have come here under the current administrations immigration policy. Thats what has happened. The strain on the infrastructure has been real. We have been as a community trying to put our arms around this and manage the community to the best of our ability. Let me clarify that then. Theres been a lot of misreporting on that front. This is a bid administration program. They were permitted to come here legally. How did they wind up in springfield . Theres probably theres been some organic growth. In the last three years we have seen this increase influx. There was jobs to fill in the area. I would believe there would be agencies more involved with filling those jobs and would have more information than i would. Im sure there was a coordinated effort to bring workers in. From that, theres been Word Of Mouth and organic growth from that. How are they being protected . Some feel threatened. Are there threats against individuals that have involved your Police Force . As far as the threats have come in, you could blanket across any of the leaders, myself, my family, the Commission Leaders as well as the many buildings that have been threatened. Each is taken seriously. We have had to take precautions to make sure that our community is secure. The state of ohio deployed many resources into our community, including Crowd Cameras and things like that to monitor key strategic locations. Today, 6 00 a. M. In the morning, the state of ohio had troopers at every School Buildings in springfield along with bomb dogs to make sure the school is swept and safe so kids can return to school. The governor has been supportive of you and of the community. Springfield being thrust into the spotlight. You had the proud boys this weekend. What kind of affect did that have on the people of the community . Any time theres a group that comes in that wants to bring unrest instead of peace is a concern. It disrupts the community, no matter if its 12 or 200, its disruptive. Our goal is to make sure that folks are safe when a response like that happens in our community. What would you like your senator, the republican president ial candidate to know about springfield, ohio . What would you like us to know about your up to . Springfield is a beautiful city. It still is today a beautiful city. We have an increase in migrants. We want to make sure we are wrapping our arms around the situation. This Wasnt Something we brought upon ourselves. We want to make sure that the world knows that pets are safe here. That sounds silly. But also the fact that this is a wonderful community with wonderful people. We work together to solve problems. David, moments ago we spoke to the mayor, as you saw, about the false narrative. This is an allamerican community in ohio. Theres been a burden from this influx of immigration from a biden administration program, as he explained. The mayor has tried to help. There are troopers. Its unfortunate the schoolchildren and townspeople and their parents have to put up with this, the threats. This is a dark chapter of this political campaign. Its not a surprise. I think we fully expected the Trump Campaign to use dark imagery of immigration as a campaign tactic. The modern day Willy Horton attack. I believe its deliberate what they have done and is continuing to do in continuing to talk about springfield. They could be talking about the immigration Policy Debate the nation wants to have about legal and illegal immigration and naturalization and all the other Policy Questions about it. Instead, what they immediately reach for is to suggest that in this case legal immigrants should be conflated with crime, false stories of crime. As we hear from the governor to the Mayor And Everyone else in between, there was a change in immigration policy, theres a new diverse community in springfield. But the Haitian American Community is contributing to the fabric of that community and is supporting the way of life in that community. Donald Trump And J. D. Vances eyes, thats bad for america. But it goes back to what Donald Trump came on the scene with, White America is overrun by immigration. I will stop it. This is a dark chapter. I think it will backfire. The american people have rejected these dark narratives by a majority. Charlie, the false rhetoric is being embraced by many members of congress. If they are doing it, they must think its going to work. I think this is really sad on many levels. It was nice to hear this mayor. He is a pragmatic guy. I think what many republicans need to get back to is a center right small c conservatism, temperance, stability, discipline, measured statements. This is what we should be about. I think thats what the mayor was trying to convey rather than this type of incendiary rhetoric that leads to Instability And Disorder and is not something conservative republicans should be about. Thats why im involved with this organization to get the republican party back to behaving seriously on matters of policy and situations like this. He would should be the party of order and not inciting this nonsense. There are real consequences. Schools are shut down, Bomb Threats called in. To do this in your own state why would a senator call out one of his own communities in this way . Its not helpful. Its contrary to everything i have been brought up in. Theres another example here in ohio regarding the sheriff in another small town in ohio. This is a county where residents are being told to monitor their neighborhoods, their neighbors. They are urging residents to start monitoring neighbors who put up Harris Walz signs on their lawns writing to Social Media this is from the sheriff. Write down all the addresses of the people who have her signs in their yards. Thats trickled down into trying to stir people up against people who Lawn Signs . Thats beyond creepy. Sounds like east germany. Its very unhealthy. Its a first amendment issue. People can put whatever sign they want in their yard for political purposes. Its none of the governments business. The fact an election efficient is monitoring that what is he going to share it with . You think a Law Enforcement Official would know better than to do something like this. Apparently not in this case. David, how do we prevent this from happening, the violent rhetoric from inflaming more reaction . I think charlie hit on something very important.
