Starts now. Tonight on the reidout we will do large deportations from springfield, ohio. Large deportations, we're going to get these people out. We're bringing them back to venezuela. We're going to have the largest deportation in the history of our country and we're going to start with springfield and aurora. They know it's a lie. And yet, trump and vance are defending their racist hate speech about haitian migrants in springfield, ohio. Which is ripping the community apart and sparking violent threats. And maybe that's the whole point. Also tonight, the second apparent assassination attempt against donald trump, the suspect is none of the things trump rails about. Not a liberal, not a minority, not a migrant. But that's not stopping maga world from using the incident to pour more fuel on the fire. Plus, expanding the map. Surprisingly good new polling for vice president harris in states that are not supposed to be competitive. But we begin tonight with an admission. Now, i want you to listen to james david hamal, who currently calls himself jd vance, admitting in a cnn interview that he made up the violent smear against haitian immigrants in springfield, ohio, in order to create a meme that the mainstream media had to report on. The american media totally ignored this stuff until donald trump and i started talking about cat memes. If i have to but it wasn't just a meme. If i have to create stories so the american media actually pays attention to the suffering of the american people, then that's what i'm going to do. If i have to create stories so that the american media actually has to pay attention to the suffering of american people, that's what i'm going to do. Okay, james david, let's talk about suffering. Since you and donald trump's now admitted lie, ohio's governor has ordered extra state trooper patrols of springfield schools because there have been multiple bomb threats called in, to springfield city hall and hospitals. The right wing proud bys who helped attack the u. S. Capitol on january 6th and whose leader is serving a 22year prison sentence have marched through springfield like the kkk of old, and haitian residents are afraid to leave their homes due to shooting threats. Perhaps the biggest threat of all, donald trump is threatening to come to springfield to hold one of his low energy, light attendance rallies, and thus, the junior senator from ohio becomes the first candidate for vice president to admit to putting people in his own state at risk for their lives and terrorizing them on purpose, just to force the mainstream media to discuss immigration on his cynical, white nationalism boosting terms. Unsurprisingly, there are now calls for vance to resign from the senate, due to the suffering his now admitted lie has unleashed in springfield. Ohio state representative casey weinstein tweeted, after that now infamous cnn interview, quote, in the wake of jd vance admitting he created the pet eating story and as a result of the very real threats the communities and people he has targeted are now under, i am calling on him to resign as our senator. A timely reminder that vance had his senate seat purchased for him in 2022 for $15 million by a racist woman hating hedge fund billionaire named beater thiel who has been vance's only employer his whole life. And that vance ran for senate asking this really weird question in his most prolific tv ad. Are you a racist? well, well, i guess jd decided to answer that question himself. Two years later with a resounding yes. By admitting despite being paid by the voters of ohio to represent, protect, and defend them, all of them, regardless of race, color, or immigration status, he instead unleashed what amounts to a terrorist campaign on his own constituents, by amplifying hideous lies about black immigrants who were invited to become desperately needed workers in springfield. Lies that started with ugly rumors about haitian immigrants spread by literal neonazis. Which got amplified when a facebook post that the poster now admits was a misunderstood story about her neighbor, went viral and melded with an arrest more than 100 miles west of springfield of a clearly troubled black american woman for harming a cat, which then became what vance himself has now labeled a meme that he felt free to amplify to stoke racism against haitian immigrants for no other reason than to make the media cover immigration his way. That is who donald trump with his own long history of racism put on his ticket to be one step away from the nuclear codes. And despite all the condemnation, they are still doing it. Why? because it's a strategy. Here is donald trump telling you that he doesn't care that james david's admitted lie stoked literal tearism in springfield and doubling down on the lies. Do you denounce the bomb threats in springfield, ohio? i don't know what happened with the bomb threats. I know that it's been taken over by illegal migrants. And that's a terrible thing that happened. Springfield was this beautiful town, and now they're going through hell. It's a sad thing. So there's a term that you might not have heard before, but will unfortunately probably hear me use again that describes what jd vance and donald trump and the right wing friends like christopher rufo and stephen miller are doing. It's stochastic terrorism. Stochastic terrorism is when the public demonization of a person or group of people through idealogically driven hate speech increases the likelihood that those people will be violently attacked and targeted because of those vicious claims. It's when attacks on drag queens claiming they are grooming and sexualizing children lead to drag shows being canceled because of bomb threats. It's the right's demonization of speaker nancy pelosi that lead to a deranged man breaking into her san francisco home, searching for her so he can, quote, put her on trial, and instead, bashing her husband's head in. And of course, it's what jd vance has done to haitian immigrants in springfield, ohio. There's also a second term you need to know to understand what these people are doing, and i promise you, i promise you i'm not making it up. It's called dead catting. Making a shocking dramatic and usually false claim to distract from a more damaging story. It's like if a comedian threw a dead cat on the stage to divert attention from the fact he's bombing, and it's a technique often used by autocrats and failing leaders. Think duterte in the philippines elected in 2016 like donald trump who called on police and even private citizens to kill anyone involved in the drug trade. While he was bilking his country financially by corruptly steering government contracts to his friends and cronies. Duterte lost office in 2022, a year after trump got run out of washington and he's currently fighting to stay out of prison over the corruption and to avoid the international criminal court over the drug killings. Meanwhile, jd vance would very much like you to stop talking and thinking about his constant sliming of childless cat ladies that include women like taylor swift and some of her army of fans, many of whom are of voting age. He would like us to stop talking about his party's religious fanaticism and their determination to ban abortion nationwide using the tactics written down in project 2025. They fear that they will lose the election in 50 days because women are so disgusted by james david vance and donald trump that they won't vote for them. So what better dead cat to throw on the stage than forcing the media to instead focus on haitian immigrants who jd and trump are demonizing as unhuman beasts lurking outside your door waiting to steal your cats and dogs so they can eat them? did i mention jd blurbed a book by the pizza gate conspiracy promoter and right wing lunatic that's titled unhumans. What better way to replace the embarrassing memes about jd's cat lady fixation and his weird possible amorous relationship with couches than to get americans to instead post memes about haitians eating the dogs and cats. Those are the things they want talked about, not the republican party's systematic hatred of women who won't stay home and churn butter for their husbands and vote for the rapist and his weird friend instead of normal middle class kamala harris and tim walz. They would much rather lie about haitians and turn them into hate objects. If those lies cause some ignorant maga devotees, to target them, terrorize them, and i don't know, maybe even kill some of them, and maybe hurt some other innocent people in springfield, ohio, who are not haitian immigrants but just like them are living their lives going to work or school and minding their business, well, so be it. James david says it's worth it. It's what he's got to do to force the mainstream media to join fox and newsmax and other right wing outlets and podcasts in negatively fixating on immigrants so trump can casually announce if he becomes president again, he will conduct a bloody mass deportation unlike anything anyone has ever seen before. And guess where trump now says he's going to start the bloody mass deportations? springfield. Of course. All of this as trump faces his second brush with death, via a gunman shooting at him in palm beach, florida, just as happened in pennsylvania. Neither of whom were haitian or any immigrant. Both of whom were white, american, trump supporting men with guns. Joining me now is david rothkopf, columnist for the daily beast and host of the deep state podcast. So good to see you. I wrote this piece and was very angry on a plane and then i saw your piece you had written on your substack which i subscribe to. I knew you were the right person to talk to. This thing that jd vance has now admitted that he did is so ugly and awful, i wish that the haitian community could file a class action lawsuit against him, but it's clear he's doing it to force us to talk about immigration, not abortion. Your thoughts. I think they have used violence as a tactic since the very moment trump entered the stage. He's defended or promoted violence in charlottesville. He defended and promoted violence during the blm demonstrations in 2020. We saw it happen on january 6th. And the reason he does it is it sends a message, it says america is chaotic, and you need a strong man to step in, and as strong men have used in the past, dictators want to be dictators have done in the past, they use this to say you must give me extraordinary powers. And i think one of the things that was most chilling to me was over the weekend, there were pamphlets being distributed in springfield, ohio, that literally used the exact same type face as the nazi pamphlets that were handed out in the '30s. Used the same words, referred to haitians in the same way hitler referred to jews as filth. This is a hitlerian tactic. Now, complicating this whole matter, you provided us with some good vocabulary words. There's another one that people should keep in mind. That is hybrid warfare, because one of the people who is supporting all this is vladimir putin. We know, we have seen what the doj has done with them, and they amplify these messages. They amplify the messages because they think it weakens the u. S. They amplify the messages because only if trump wins can putin win in ukraine. So you have got hitler tactics and you've got putin tactics together as the kind of last gasp, i hope, of this maga movement. But you know, i think it poses a real risk that the next six, seven, eight weeks, and possibly the weeks after the election, could be much more violent than anything we have seen thus far. Right, and i mean, the irony of it is that the violence, the actual violence we're seeing comes much more disproportionately from maga themselves, whether it's january 6th, whether it's them threatening election workers. Whether it's the bomb threats coming in to schools in springfield. The violence is coming from them, from their own supporters, yet they try to portray haitian immigrants as the people to fear. I'm going to point you to a local sheriff who in ohio has put out a threatening message saying that people, the sheriff said he wants people to write down the addresses of kamala harris supporters who display yard signs for kamala harris and tim walz. So that later on, if anything goes wrong, they can go back to those people, essentially issuing what really amounts to a threat. That's now happening in springfield, too, and that's not just from some rando. That's from a sheriff. Your thoughts. I think it's terrible. I think it plays, though, in counterpoint, and we really need to underscore this point, to the mayor of springfield and other people in springfield pointing out the haitians have been there for years. The haitians are well liked, loved members of the community. The haitians are actually people who are contributing to this community in many manifold ways. And you know, this story, that gets lost in the story. They're not illegal. They're legal. They are not a threat. They are actually helping this place grow, a place that needed new workers to come in. And so yes, we have got real division here between the right, which is trying to demonize these people, and why? why are they demonizing them? because haitians are black. Because haitians speak a foreign language. They're demonizing them because they are sort of the archetypal other, the people you blame when you are seeking to run this kind of campaign, which go back to your first point, has terrorism as a campaign tactic. This stochastic terrorism is a campaign tactic for trump and vance. It's unbelievably shocking, and yet it's nightly news now. Indeed, and i should note that sheriff is in portage county, ohio, the springfield administration has been very supportive. That's portage county. Note, i want to just say to all of those folks who are maga, black maga, people who are black folks who are supporting trump, pay attention to how he's talking about haitians because it's not clear he feels a whole lot different about y'all, but you're riding for this guy and this is the kind of thing he's doing to other black people. You should pay attention to that. David rothkopf, you're exactly the person i wanted to talk to. Thank you. Everyone should subscribe to your substack. Thank you, sir. Com we are learning more about what the fbi is calling an apparent assassination attempt on donald trump yesterday. The second attempt in nine weeks and in both cases the individuals were not minorities, undocumented immigrants, or someone from haiti or venezuela, they were white guys with guns. They were both registered republicans. In fact, the suspect from this weekend's incident who is identified as 58yearold ryan wesley routh, voted for trump in 2016 before apparently becoming disillusioned with him. He made his first appearance in a florida courtroom this morning charged with illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a weapon with an obliterated serial number. He has an extensive criminal record in north carolina that includes a 2002 conviction for possessing a weapon of mass destruction, a machine gun. Strangely enough, he was interviewed by the new york times last year about his vocal support for ukraine and its war against russia. A war he attempted to fight in but he says he was rejected by ukraine's military because he was too old and had no battlefield experience. At a press conference this afternoon, the acting secret service director stated that routh never had a line of sight to trump, nor did he ever fire or get off any shots at the secret service. Routh's motive is still unclear. Joining me now is congressman jason crow of colorado, ranking member of the task force on the attempted assassination of donald trump. Congressman, good to see you. Thanks for being here. Does it surprise you or should it surprise us at this point in our country in the year of our lord, 2024, that a man with a known criminal history including criminal history potentially involving guns, was able to so easily get his hands on an ak47? well, thanks for having me, joy. First of all, we should not accept as normal any of this violence. Like, the moment we stop being surprised by anything that happened in the last 24 hours or anything that's happened in the cycle, that's the moment i think we have lost our way as a country, so yes, we should also be shocked by this violence and you shouldn't have to be a democrat or a republican to have that level of shock. To your point about guns, it is true our country is awash in guns. It's too easy to get weapons of war easily. It's too easy to get them illegally. We of course can not draw any direct connection to gun policies and any one incident unless we have full information, but there's no doubt in my mind we have a gun violence epidemic in this nation that continues. We can't necessarily draw a direct connection between policies but we do know that donald trump when he was president relaxed the restrictions that had been in place in the obama administration to prevent those with mental illnesses from getting guns. We know that the supreme court has made it easier for bump stocks to be legal, that means machine guns, things like ak47 apparently are just fine with these six conservative majority in the supreme court. We know that in the state of florida, where this took place, ron desantis has quietly legalized carrying concealed weapons without a permit. So we do know that policy makes a difference, congressman, when we had an assault weapons ban for ten years, the number of mass shootings went down. I couldn't have said it better myself. That's absolutely true. Listen, i got involved in politics, i ran for office in large part because of gun violence in america. I'm a former army ranger. I fought in war for this country. I grew up a hunter. I'm a firearm owner now. But we have a crisis in america. We're failing our country, we are failing our children. Guns are the number one cause of death for kids in america today. I represent a community that's been disproportionately impacted by gun violence. The aurora theater, columbine, arapahoe high school. I had four mass shootings in my district. It's why i ran for congress, so there's no doubt that policy matters. Does it prevent everything? no, but would it save a lot of lives if we did common sense things like an assault weapons ban, like universal background checks, absolutely. I want to ask about donald trump's sort of history, about the way he has talked about guns and talked about firearms. He said he would roll back any restrictions that the biden administration put in place, restrictions for people to get access to firearms including ar15s. Let me play you what he said in 2016, suggesting the way that hillary clinton could be brought to heel. Hillary wants to abolish, essentially abolish the second amendment. By the way, if she gets to pick if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks. Although the second amendment people, maybe there is. I don't know. He has now blamed biden and harris rhetoric for the latest assassination attempt, saying he will save the country. That is his reaction to what's happened to him. The same we high did when he was shot at in pennsylvania even though that person was also a supporter of his and a republican. And his allies, people like elon musk, are supposedly joking, no one is trying to assassinate biden and kamala harris, which he then called a joke. This is the kind of rhetoric that we're seeing, and donald trump made what i guess one could call a joking i hate taylor swift post, which we know will subject her to violent threats, because when he posts things like that, the violent threats follow. So this person, donald trump, despite being a victim of attempted gun violence, he ain't changing his rhetoric. Do you think he should? yeah, i do think he should. I think it's very unhelpful and simply not true. We know it's not true. It's not true in springfield, ohio, the claims he makes about that community. It's not true that president biden and vice president harris somehow are responsible for this latest attempt. Listen, democrats, my colleagues, president biden, vice president harris have consistently and uniformly rejected political violence. Period. And you know what's also not true is president trump's claims that venezuelan gangs have taken over my home town of aurora, colorado, which he raised twice in the debate last week. It's not true, it's patently false. This disinformation, misinformation certainly does not help us lower the temperature in the room and have a factbased discussion about what is and isn't happening in this country, and i will condemn all violence from any sector, from any background, i will continue to do so. And our country, what we need to do, and we are perfectly capable of doing this, joy, and that is distinguishing between political rhetoric and having tough debates during tough campaign seasons which i will continue to do. I am not going to waver from that. But while at the same time, condemning violence. We are out of time. I'm being told we have to wrap, but i have to ask one more question. Do you think if you were to introduce, for instance, a protect donald trump firearms act, that would restrict the ability of people who are mentally ill, who have previous gun convictions from getting guns, do you think your republican colleagues would vote for that? gun culture has become so broken and awry in this country, and frankly, the gun industry has such a firm chokehold on the republican party in washington, d. C. , i'm not sure even that would do it. There you go. Congressman jason crow, thank you very much. And thank you for defending aurora, my next door neighbor growing up town. We'll be right back. This weekend, the harris/walz campaign continued their new way forward outreach with events in michigan, virginia, new hampshire, pennsylvania, nevada, minnesota, and wisconsin. Vice president harris ended her week in washington, speaking at the congressional black caucus awards dinner. A day before that, second gentlemen doug emhoff held an event at the villages in florida, which is part of a harris/walz campaign strategy to chip away at trump strongholds. Last week, a morning consult poll showed trump leading harris by just two points in florida. You know where else she's gained on him? iowa. A new des moines register poll shows harris has dlumatically narrowed trump's lead in the state from 18 points to just four. Earlier today, harris met with the international brotherhood of teamsters, the union's president said they could make a decision on an endorsement as early as wednesday. Joining me now is tom bonnier, political strategist and senior adviser for target smart. I want to jump right into it. Let's go to iowa. I have always wondered if there would be even a delayed reaction to that sixweek abortion ban and whether that would actually change the dynamic. We know president obama did win iowa in 2008. What do you make of these polls showing harris down 47/43 where she used to be down biden was down 50/32. We have to keep in mind when we think about this sort of postdobbs environment that we're still very much in, that the first place that really tested that dynamic was kansas. Which is demographically fairly similar to iowa, frankly has been more democratic in many ways and what we saw in kansas was just a complete rebuke of the republican abortion policy, and of the dobbs decision. So to see these numbers, yeah, i think this is an optimistic survey there, but i think it's representative of this dynamic where a lot of these more moderate republicans who have been with the party and been holding on just in hope they can come back to their senses somehow, are giving up hope as it's clear they're going in a very different direction. And florida, everyone that i know from florida has written florida completely off, but should we? if it's close in florida, and you have both marijuana and an abortion referendum on the ballot, and you have a woman running for senate against the guy who said he's going to sunset social security, do we write florida off? you can't write florida off. And as you said, it's a state that donald trump absolutely has to win. And you look at the numbers there, again, as you said, you have abortion on the ballot. What we know in the limited history of abortion rights ballot initiatives since the dobbs decision is they have a significant impact on turnout. Beyond kansas i mentioned, we think about michigan last time around, montana, and so we think back just to 2022, where frankly, things didn't look good for democrats. A lot of democrats felt burned that ron desantis won relatively easily after a very close election in 2018. We looked at the numbers there, and what we found, the issue really wasn't as much of a persuasion issue as democrats stayed home. A million of them. Democrats have a lot of reasons to come out. Yeah, a million democrats stayed home. People forget, he didn't win by adding more people. They subtracted a million people from the voter rolls. Financial times, a michigan ross poll on the economy. Who do you trust more on the economy, harris beating trump, margin of error, but whoa. Who do you trust to lower costs? harris. Who will represent the middle class more, harris is middle class versus trump that should be what it is, but it is shocking democrats never win these kinds of polls, tom. What's happening? well, you know, this is sort of a late breaker because as you allude to, donald trump had been leading, and republicans generally generally lead in economic indicators and generally whoever is not in power is going to have a little bit of an advantage there. Even though we saw vice president harris surging in the polls after july 21st, those numbers weren't moving as quickly. What we have seen since the debate is more movement on those economic numbers in a very positive way. I think the debate had a huge bearing on that. You saw one candidate, vice president harris, who actually had an agenda and was talking about people like her, and that she was there to run to represent the average voter. And donald trump, we all saw what he did. He certainly wasn't there to represent the average american. She keeps saying i'm a middle class person, a middle class kid. That seems like a powerful rebuke to donald trump's whole brand, that he's a billionaire. He can't even pretend. He says he's a billionaire even if he's not. The last thing i will add here is abortion really was it was everything in 2022. You and i talked about this, simon rosenberg, you were the two who agreed with me it was a huge driving factor. Is that still as powerful a driving factor or is it really going to be an economic, the economy this time in november? everything we're seeing now suggests that it's all of the above at this point. That abortion rights and the dobbs decision that we're in the environment where we have seen democrats overperform in special elections and offyear elections in the midterm elections often by six or seven points. Let's keep in mind we have also seen republicans underperforming donald trump in the primary underperformed the polls. There's this weird narrative out there that donald trump, he's just someone who always overperformed the polls. Well, he didn't as recently as earlier this year. And a big part of that is the dobbs decision and abortion right. In fact, you were the first one to break this on your show a few weeks ago when we were talking about the voter registration data, and the big surges were coming from those exact same voters who are most mobilized by aborg rights. There you go, the sleeper issue that shouldn't be a sleeper issue. People should know it's happening. Half the population lost their rights. Tom, thank you, thank you as always. His poor people's campaign has sent out over 8 million messages about voter registration to lowwage americans, in spanish and in english, as part of a nationwide push to get 15 million new poor and lowwage voters to the polls. A potential swing vote in this crucial election. Joining me is the aforementioned william barber, author of white poverty, how exposing myths about race and class can reconstruct american democracy. I'm going to put on the screen the poverty rate by race. 17% for hispanics, 23% for native americans but 8. 2% for white americans. 15. 9 million people. How do you get all of these lowwealth americans to vote? well, one of the things harris and i and the poor people's campaign are curious about from the studies is you have to talk to people. Those numbers are based on the u. S. Measure of poverty. If you use the supplemental measurement, it goes higher, 140 million poor or lowwage folk. You have to talk to them, what you're talking about is 30 million voters who have not voted in the last few elections. 57 million voted but 30 million didn't vote of the 88 million poor and low wage voters in this country. We decided we were going to have a maximum attempt to do something that had never been done. That is to reach 15 million of the 30 million. Not with a message of who to vote for, but a message, a nonpartisan message about the issues, about where people have stood because you can do that nonpartisan, and people talking to their peers. So 8 million people, over a million in spanish this weekend, got a report card. They got a video with their peers talking to them. They got a direction to go directly to voter. Org, and we're not through yet. We're still pushing and bringing in all forms of people to do direct peertopeer texting, and doortodoor knocking. We're not doing either/or. We're dog both. You have to speak to them. And here is the campaign list of demands from the poor people's campaign. Abolishing poverty as the fourth leading cause of death in the u. S. , a living wage, full voting rights, health care for all, affordable adequate housing, end to gun violence, clean air and water, fully funded public education, just immigration laws and an end to the extremist political agenda. Are you sending these report cards on the issues just about the presidential race or all the way down the ballot to school board? the one that we're actually doing, it looks at party and presidential. It has the democrat party, republican party. It has kamala harris and donald trump. And what it does is the way the report card is done by the lawyers, it simply shows where they have voted. It doesn't tell you who to vote for. It says here is where they stood, what they said. You have to make your choice. It also has a whole group of people who are talking to their peers saying i'm going to vote. One of the leading researchers, this is going to come out, and i want to read it to you. She said about this effort, lowincome people respond to information on the contrast between the candidates, and they really respond to people like you talking to them about the power. The effort we're doing is to remind folks, you have power in a time where for instance the margin of victory was 74,000 last time in north carolina and a million poor and lowwage voters didn't vote in pennsylvania, it was 40,000, and over a million poor and low wage people didn't vote. In wisconsin, 20,000, and over a million poor and low wage poor and low wage people have to start talking about the power they have, the largest potential swing vote in the country. What we're hearing is they're responding to that in this text messaging and door to door knocking and in the information we're sending. They will make the decision who they vote for, but we're going to make sure people understand their power and what the current positions are on issues. In talking about it the way power is wielded, we know a president can only do so much without a senate and a house majority as well. And so i'm wondering if that part of the messaging will be following, to talk about how power is wielded because then people elect someone and say why haven't they changed my entire life. Part of the way the poor people's campaign is structures is statebased. And so when we, during the election, we push folk in the state. We note if people get out to vote, they're going to consider the whole ticket. So that's why part of the reason is the report card talks about where the parties stand. In the states. Bishop william barber, thank you for all you do pretty much appreciated. We will be right back. Lost s e w. In studies, the majority of people reached an a1c under 7 and maintained it. I'm under 7. (♪♪) you may know my wiley as a friend of the show, who returned to before anyone else. And as a former candidate for you new york city mayor but her memoir is out marching is a deeply personal look into her upbringing, the complicated reality of identity in america and the power of activism i talked to her about her parents who fought for civil rights. In it she writes, neither of my parents fit in the but for different reasons. Dad's origins are and what it meant to be a wiley involve the silent expectation and imagination but that expectation was achievement. The imagination was a changing society. The message on repeat was remember, you are a wiley it also had its contradictions especially when it came to this black man in a white world. The man who loved red roasters and hated poverty as an iconic iconoclast. Understanding how we came to a body both of these high expectations and imaginings was a challenging legacy he left me with. Joining me now is maya wiley, president of the leadership conference on civil and human rights and author of remember you are a wiley. It is always so good to see you, maya. Let us talk about this. You write about your parents and the contradiction between who they were to talk about that a bit but your dad is a civil rights leader but your mom is somewhat unexpected. Thank you, joy, for having me. I'm grateful to be here tonight of all nights and i'm very nervous. I will try to pull it together. My mom was a white woman who grew up in west texas in a racist southern baptist community sprint and just simply got on a plane in the 1950s, left and went straight to harlem and never looks back or went back and married a black man. When it was still a decade but more before the supreme court case that it was constitutional tonight interracial marriage. She was her own, kind of, stalwart legacy for me as the person who embodied what it meant to be truly antiracist. Also what it meant to be an ally and what it meant to be a black woman. In other words she got out of the way and supported me every step of the way to say, america is a racist place. You are a black woman. Your job is to be confident and know that, you know, you have my love and i have your back. She was her own amazing gift. I have my copy of the book here. I've been reading about it. Nothing in her background or geography explains why in 1957 she hopped on a plane bound for new york city and went straight to harlem, however she never been to new york or black community. She was a southern baptist goal that was as fundamental and as most everyone who lived in abilene but her upbringing was segregated and politically conservative and she did not hesitate to step right into both spanish and black harlem. There she also worked to reduce teen pregnancy and join students up for a society. And she marries your dad who is quite the opposite. He is one of the prominent civil rights organization in the country leaders. Talk about him. Dad was the black man who got up phd in organic chemistry from cornell university in 1957, a phd. He was the embodiment of what it meant to remember that you are a wiley. Which was you were supposed to achieve. You also were supposed to walk in the footsteps of the values of the family that was a religious family too. Actually, pretty fundamentalist. A black family and one that had high expectations of their children not to show up or show out in any inappropriate way. It was much more traditional in his approach. Yet, meets my mom and he just goes all in. And leaves his job to be an activist. You are up to run for mayor of new york city. Again, someone who is a challenging individual and has some issues right now. I wonder what lessons you take from the peak who raised you and the things that you have managed to accomplished as we all think about an election which identity is a big deal. What was so important is that they were so comfortable in their own skins. They were okay not fitting in. It may also were really not okay with anybody being hungry, with racism being racism, with black women being treated poorly and that you were supposed to do every thing in your power. Whatever that power was. It was do what you can as best as you can. This was a fundamental lesson. You should be outraged, we stood should be angry right now for the racism is all over the place, the sexism is outrageous. It is also critically important to fight with compassion, which is really understand and make connection with people. Find the people you can make connection with. Build the tent and understand that you are working for the liberation of everyone. This is the book, remember you are a wiley. Please support this book. Thank you for wiley, congratulations. It is a fantastic book that is two nights the reidout. Inside with jen psaki starts right now.
