Some Law Enforcement Passing by, but we know according to Law Enforcement who had a Press Conference earlier, there crediting the quick actions of a witness who saw the suspect running from the tall shrubbery that surrounds this property. This witness, apparently, took down the information, the Vehicle Information of the suspect right away and alerted authorities. Officials were able to track down the suspect along the interstate, and were told the suspect has been identified as 58yearold Ryan Wesley Routh. He was compliant and surrendered pretty quickly, but this took place earlier Today Right before 2 00 p. M. Between the fifth and sixth holes and typically, when he is playing a round of golf you have Secret Service surrounding him. They have this protective bubble and they get ahead of in to see if anything might be going wrong and in this case they did notice a Gunman Pointing toward the former president , and thats when the agents began firing several rounds. Its unclear if the suspect fired back and we are told there were no injuries. Local state of federal agents moved in quickly and secured this area and we are told at this hour there is no longer a threat. What is happening right now with this investigation . He is being processed. Fingerprinted and photographed. Theres a couple things going on. You have somebody doing a deep dive into his background. We have social Media Exploitation teams and they are looking at is postings which i have seen some of online. Theres other analysts doing a background, what we know about him and prior military service, family members. They may be phones and ringing doorbell some people who knew him and associated with him. They are running his cars, plates, Social Media, friends, family, all of that is being gathered right now. First thing in the morning they will knock on doors of people who knew this guy, worked with him, had other professional association with him and they will tried to build a picture of with this guy was and why he might do this. There was at the Press Conference today conversations about other specialized teams that are already working. Take us inside the fbi and what kind of teams beside this team you talked about would be working right now . The Intelligence Analyst looking at Intelligence Chatter recently that could relate to something like this. Often times Intelligence Chatter comes in innocuous. They will go back and look at any Intelligence Chatter that might relate to this, if there is any. Any of those tabs a places to see if this guy lived or stayed there. Theres leads getting set for different offices so you have different teams doing different things, finances. They are looking at is banking records, Social Security Records and if they can get their hands on his Income Tax records. They are looking to do a deep dive in these aspects of his life. The danger persists into the new administration, and quite probably, beyond that for some of the individuals. They too are in Homeland Security, and heres where the budgeting comes in. Homeland security has one big number, billions upon billions of dollars, and that is a. That has to be spread out amongst many different agencies. Treasury has a more direct authority for spending. It may well be that it should be moved out of Homeland Security. However, there are certain elements in Homeland Security that are absolutely essential for the Secret Service to do its job and thats the intelligence functions. Thats the functions dealing with the i. T. And other related Surveillance Operations that do occur. If you are going to move it, you have to find a way to coordinate these multiple resources that do exist in a very large and, and i also believe, over extended agency. Let me ask you, we are out of time, but we have had a couple now, affecting directors. Does a permanent director need to be confirmed, put in place, get the agency on a more solid footing, essentially, of leadership . We are up against the clock. We have 51 days in the selection and another two or three months before the inaugural. This agency, you can argue, lets stay with the Acting Director who seems to have his act together. Give him the resources necessary, and i will go back to the continued resolution issue, but the reality is, to change again with probably be even more disruptive in a short period of time. Back with me as msnbc Law Enforcement analyst and also with us to weigh in on the legal side of this investigation is florida State Attorney for Palm Beach county, dave aronberg. Let me start with the fact he has this long Wrap Sheep and apparently had some interest, let me put it simply, in ukraine. According to the Washington Post. He was trying to muster up a Ragtag Army to defend ukraine and writing a book about his failed efforts. As they start to dig into his past whether its runins with the law or the fact that, as we said, he once did have a conviction for possessing a Machine Gun or looking to perhaps put together some kind of army for ukraine, what kind of picture does that start to draw for investigators . You know it will be interesting in this case to be able to to determine how long he had been planning this plot into he may have been in association with in terms of trying to put a team of others together, if that is true. I certainly believe that it creates a great deal of pause for Law Enforcement across the country, particularly at the federal level. That we have to continue, they have to continue to take these types of threats very seriously because they are threats being acted on and sometimes its not one individual involved. There may be others as well who could have corroborated in this Assassination Attempt of the former president. When you start to build this profile, i dont know if its a sociological profile, emotional profile, however you want to look at it, dave, where does that leave you in terms of building a case . Some of the crimes he could be charged with could require intent. Theres a federal crime that makes it illegal to threaten a former president. You have to show that that was his intent to do so. Maybe his writings in his backpack are threats, and theres assault against a federal Law Enforcement officer here. Apparently when he pointed the gun at a secret Service Agent, is that his attempt to do that . When you look at him, you are looking at what motivated him and what was he trying to do . That will come into play with the charges against him. There are some charges it doesnt matter. The matter that hes a exfelon imposition of a firearm, he will go down for that. He is facing a lot of hurt right now. The only person who came in contact with the suspect said the police who arrested him, apparently was the witness. I dont know but call a Contact But Somebody who had visualization of what was going on. That person who saw him fleeing the scene, that person who saw him get in the car and had the wherewithal to write down the License Plate Number and call police, how important is that person to this case . Is going to be hugely important, particularly as an eyewitness and i think Da Ehrenberg will agree. That individual will play a significant role in terms of what it is they sought that moment. What did they observe, the timing around the observation, were there others involved . A host of questions will be asked of that witness which is going to be key to this investigation. Who else are the key people they want to talk to at this point . I think anyone he has had contact with that shows a level of planning. Depending on what his intent was, if he talked about it well in advance and had a lot of premeditation, that would be bad for him. They want to talk to people around him. His son said thats not the guy i know. He would never do something like this. His father is a convicted felon and has a long wrap sheet. Maybe he put his head in the sand but there are probably others who know things. If theres other who aided and abetted him and cooperated with him, they will go down too. They will try to do a profile to find out who he spoke to and who knew what and when. It was interesting i thought in the Press Conference today that, think it was the local sheriff, he said, he showed no emotion when he was taken into custody. He gave no indication he was curious about anything that was going on. Did that strike you as unusual or is that every potential suspect different . In many cases like this over the years, from my experience, not one involving a former president , but individuals who have been caught following commission of a crime, many appear to have been emotionally detached. It may be some things mental Health Wise that might be with him to get him to the point to carry out such an act but that will be determined overtime once the psychological evaluation is given. Even a psychological autopsy which will reveal his psychosocial history, medical records, psychological history of records, interviews with people who may have known him in the past. This disconnect of any emotion around this type of act often times, its not a huge one. People usually have totally detach themselves from reality. The former president , republican nominee and at that to the number and on top of that, after the Assassination Attempt, you had the secret Service Director telling lawmakers, telling people, we are beefing up to the hilt the protection for trump, for Kamala Harris, for joe biden, the two Vice President ial candidates. All of these people are getting not president ial level treatment, but close. Getting close to president ial level treatment. They are getting support from the military, and still, this happened which is going to be the burning question. A smart and alert secret Service Agent saw a weapon and a man on the perimeter. Why would a man with a long gun be that close to Donald Trump . And they know the bushes are there. The Palm Beach County Sheriff told reporters just how close that gunman actually was to the former president of the united states. Let me play that. At this level he is at right now, he is not the sitting president. If he was we wouldve had this entire Golf Course around about because he is not, securities limited to the areas the Secret Service, as possible. I would imagine the next time he comes to the Golf Course, there will probably be more people around the perimeter. The Secret Service did exactly what they shouldve done. Even if, and congress would have to get involved, i presume, even if we need to hire more secret Service Agents, we need to have more people around Donald Trump, Kamala Harris, the president , the other 40 people you talked about, its not like they can snap their fingers. Maybe they can call on retired agents. Is it realistic to think they could ramp up protection between now and Election Day . You know, want to stress two things in answer to a good question. Number 1, the candidate is probably going to have to do something different in order to protect himself. I dont mean the Secret Service cannot protect them, but it is true, they cannot snap their fingers and create a fortress and allow him to also golf on a course that is accessible by roadways and residential streets. There is going to have to be some sort of consideration of another kind of Security Bubble around him. Some changes in his routine. A Golf Course that is Semi Public and next to residential streets probably is not ideal. Right after the shooting in butler, the then director of the Secret Service told the Trump Campaign, no more outdoor events until we figure out how to secure you in those places. I think you were going to see the director, Acting Director, come out and say either to the campaign or publicly say we will have to do something different. Even if every single department of Homeland Security agent gets pulled up from the border or from Homeland Investigations or from tsa, follies agents get put onto security for the candidates, still dont think that is going to really be either practical or enough.
