At this hour, former president Donald Trumps Maralago Resort remains on high alert following the fbi is calling an apparent Assassination Attempt on former president Donald Trump. Earlier Today Trump emailed this Campaign Message to supporters saying, there were gunshots if my vicinity. But before rumors start spiraling Out Of Control, i wanted you to hear this first. I am safe and well. Nothing will slow me down. I will never surrender. One person is in Law Enforcement Custody after the incident. Hes identified as ryan Wesley Routh. Hes 58 years old. According to three senior Law Enforcement officials briefed on the matter. An Ak47 And Scope were recovered at the scene. Earlier today at a Press Conference in Palm Beach county, the sheriff, rick bradshaw, had some insights into the investigation. Were going to make these pictures available to you. It will show you a picture of the backpack and rifle. And there is also a Ego Pro where there was an attempt to film what was going on. The White House and the Harriswalz Campaign have expressed relief that trump was unharmed with President Biden saying in a statement, there is no place for political violence or any violence ever in our country. Reporter so chris, were actually in front of the Golf Course right now where the incident took place. I can tell you security is still very tight around this property. We know, we havent seen a lot of activity, just Law Enforcement going back and forth, obviously media is allowed near the Golf Course. Earlier today, witnesses were crediting the quick actions of witness who saw the suspect, quickly jump out, run out of the tall shrubbery. And passed this along to authorities. Officials were able to track down this individual that has now been identified as ryan routh on the interstate. We should also point out that according to authorities, he was compliant and surrendered pretty quickly. Now this all happened around the 2 00 hour earlier this afternoon. The former president was playing golf. He was somewhere around the fifth and sixth hole. And just to give you an idea of how this all shakes out when he is on the Golf Course. The protocol is you have Secret Service who kind of has the protective bubble around him. And they were at the hole in front of him. Noticed the gunman aiming towards the former president. Thats when agents began pheiffering rounds. Its unclear if the suspect actually fired back, but there were no injuries. The area, as you can imagine, was quickly secured. You had local, state, federal agencies moving in. Right now theres no longer a threat, but they are still asking members of the public to provide any information if they have it in regards to this incident. What else do we know about the details that were found at the scene . What else did we learn from the Press Conference . And again, they said rightfully so, early hours. We dont have too much we want to give away. But what are the other details that we learned . Reporter right. So from Law Enforcement earlier today where they had the Press Conference, they shared a couple things. They found a rifle on the scene. They also found two backpacks. There was a gopro and ceramic tile. All of that is currently being processed right now. Its troubling to know these items were within reach. It was left behind. Still a lot of questions as to why he was here. Vaughn, what are you hearing from the team and the people close to him . The reaction was very swift . It was a reckoning for the country to look at political violence, and the moment we have found ourselves in here in this country. Fast forward to two months. Were 51 days away from the general election. Donald trump is set to go to the Campaign Trail with stops in michigan and North Carolina. Of course, he just started recently going back, doing outdoor rallies. This is a moment here where for Donald Trump, there is a notable silence on the social Media Account at this point. So far we are waiting to hear more formally from the trump campaign, which is usually quick and outspoken. It has a lot to offer. This is a moment in time, where we have seen little out of mar alago. Outside Speaker Mark Johnson who was at maralago this afternoon and posted on x upon leaving the Palm Beach area. He said in a post, no american leader has endured such attacks. He is unstoppable, and posted a photo of him with Donald Trump. Both men having their thumbs up in that photo there. Donald trump still wearing the Golf Attire he was wearing over the afternoon. For the trump campaign, they sent out a couple of emails and text messages. This is a crucial crucial moment here for the campaign. Of course, its a moment in which, tiniers into Donald Trump being a political figure. And our politics have gotten to the point of seeing violence unfold. We would watch the January 6 attack. We watched Speaker Pelosi Being attacked at their home. Donald trump has been the target of two apparent Assassination Attempts. Indicting another individual as a potential iranian Assassination Plot to take his life. What do we think first of all, do you think well hear from Donald Trump tomorrow . What are the chances of us hearing from him tomorrow . It is always interesting to me what his initial reaction is. At this time, i thought it was pretty muted. He was the one who said lets not let things spin Out Of Control or let the rumors go. Im okay. Im fine. He was the one who said it is okay, but we also saw with the last Assassination Attempt, that it is a human reaction. First, youre in the moment, but then youre at home with your family. It has time to settle. Obviously the speaker of the house was with him for a couple of hours at le; right . What do we know about Donald Trumps framework, if anything . Yes, he was with her friends when they were holding there for a period of time before going back to maralago. Its not clear at this point. But you said it right in two months ago. He was on his way to the republican national convention, which followed that butler shooting, that very saturday, as we saw more mute the and respected Donald Trump. Releasing his tenner in milwaukee. Donald trump went back to the rhetoric for calling for prosecutions. I think the rhetoric that we have been becoming accustomed to. Well see how he proceeds. He was going to be on x. A night where he will be introducing his crypto business platform, which we have little details on. That was slated for tomorrow night. He was going to be going to michigan on tuesday. At this point in time, we are waiting to see it be those events still proceed as planned here. But we have seen some on the right, some of his allies who have been outspoken. Elon musk putting out a post. Others who have questions, conspiracy theories. Questioning how Donald Trump was able to to get so close to them. And potentially saved the life of Donald Trump here. But this is a moment here for those who are supporters. And those who are not supporters of Donald Trump are asking the serious questions about the safety of not only Donald Trump, but other national leaders. The extent to which Law Enforcement, security personnel, including Secret Service are able to effectively keep these individuals safe at a moment where there are clearly individuals who seek to do violent harm to them. Yeah, you can understand that there are serious discussions going on, about where he should be going forward. Donald trump is one of those politicians. Anyone who has ever been to one of his rallies feels it, knows it. He feeds off the audience in a broad way. What is it about the outdoor rallies that he seems to really like so much . You can have a lot of people, especially in the more rural parts of the country. And he is able to find big grassy areas. And he enjoys being outdoors then. But they were quick to not say anything because he also does these stops that are not previously or publicly announced. Of course, we see them do that as he would start in las vegas. Were 51 days out. And you have covered campaigns for a long time too. I think the part in which i go back to grand rapids, michigan, the first rally after the butler, pennsylvania assassination. I was talking to folks who were coming out. They were defiant saying if hes here, were going to be here. This is a part of what makes, you know, The American electoral experience a little different than some other places. Campaigns, they go on for a while. Yet somebody is able to disagree with Donald Trump. Its his Right And Prerogative to be able to go out to speak the words that he desires to speak, and that people are able to safely come and you are that mans worth. This is a moment here where i think understandably a lot of americans are questioning about the security and about those other individuals that may be coming to events like this. I Cant Repeat enough. We hear folks talking about violence, and that america needs to be prepared. That this could get worse, and i dont want to forecast. Thats not our business. But at the same time, i cannot tell you the number of conversations that ive had, but especially over the past year. The folks who resolve what our deep divides are in this nation. I dont know what comes next, but threats made to prosecutors, members on the life of the former President Trump. Even the election workers, vaughn hilliard, Thank You so much. Also a member of the Task Force investigating the first Assassination Attempt on former President Trump in july. Thank you so much for being with us. I was talking to your colleague just a short time ago. Its almost hard to fathom that while youre still investigating an Assassination Attempt, now theres another investigation going on. And youve said this goes beyond politics. Tell us how you see whats happening right now. Well, its deeply disturbing. And it is a very fundamental time. Where we have a close and divided nation, where its going to have to make a big decision with respect to who will be our next president going forward. And there are many other elections, going all the way down to the local level. But its critical right now for those of us on this joint Task Force for sure. I would say, i hope my colleagues across the board to put the partisan politics to the side and to be not only bipartisan, but partisan, figuring out how to address this thing. Make sure we get through Secret Service, all the resources that are needed to provide the type of protection they need to provide. And not only for our candidates. Weve got an international summit coming up. I think its in a week or so, and the Secret Service is going to have duties to provide protection there as well. So it is a challenging time for them. Weve got to make sure we will give them all that they need to get the job done. Well hold them accountable when they fall short. And you were briefed after the last attempt on Donald Trumps life. Do you think the Secret Service has made enough adjustments since then . Do you feel confident in their ability to carry out their jobs . Its fair to say more may need to be done. Theres questions around this incident, for example, that i dont have the answers to yet. Securing a perimeter around this Golf Course, Golf Courses are very big, and its a public Golf Course. But one question im sure thats going to come up, was there more that could have been done to divert this aspect. Thank goodness that secret Service Agent was observant and able to preempt any kind of assassination effort. But its still challenging and concerning to think this guy got that close. And the other part of this too, how did he know that Donald Trump was going to be going Golfing Today . And i think there are some questions around that too. There will be others as well. But i think at the end of the day, we need to make sure the adjustments that need to be made. I know they made some President Biden stepping up the kind of protection that has been made available by the Secret Service to nonpresident ial figures including former President Trump, Vice President harris. So that was a big step in the right direction. But i think its clear more needs to be done. Well have more happen there. The short Run Piece of that might require that you cannot expand the number of the secret Service Agents, and train them. So there will be an increased reliance on other Law Enforcement agencies at the federal, state, and local levels. And maybe that might be where we would have to go on the short run. Let me ask you to take off your Congressman Hat for a second and put your Lawyer Hat back on, although im sure you use that one often. You were a states attorney. From an investigative standpoint because unlike the first Assassination Attempt. Obviously there is a suspect in custody. They are already talking about a prosecution. What are the questions you have in that regard . Well, i think the fbis first mission will be to figure out whether there was anybody else, any other figures or parties that are connected to this individual. Was he acting alone . Is this a lone Wolf Scenario . Or is there some sort of other group out here. Because if there are other actors, we need to run it down, and it is important to make sure they do that in front and center. Theyve also got the on going criminal investigation. This guy has been arrested, but he has not been indicted or convicted or anything. They need to make sure they pull that together at the right way. At the same time, you heard Congressman Mock mock. Normally the fbi would do an investigation like this. Pretty much accountable. They wouldnt be putting information out as they go. But because of the unique nature of this scenario, i think they are in a situation where they are going to have to put out more information than they normally would as this moves forward. I think The American people will need to hear more of whats going on there. The other aspect is the coordination with the Secret Service. Yes, the Secret Service, we averted a scenario here where there were no shots. Apparently fired at the president , former President Trump. He wasnt injured. What are the lessons they need to take away from this immediately . As soon as tomorrow, they need to be back out there providing protection. They are going to have to learn to make sure if there are any kind of gaps or challenges or concerns that came out of today, in addition to what was there previously from butler. Theyve got to incorporate that and make the adjustments on the fly to make sure they dont have these kinds of scenarios again. Do you think the last two months of the campaign will need to look different than it has before . Maybe. I have publicly expressed the selection. And there are too many venues, too many rooftops. It was a very big area. Theres so many places where someone could set up to try to create a scenario, where they could cause Harm Or Fire shots. That is not right place. They had a fairground across town, where they had that kind of distance that could be used like they did there. There may be more of a move towards indoor facilities. I know that is difficult for former President Trump, in the reasons stated in your report just a few minutes ago. That might be something we need to do more of. And the other part is, he went out to play golf today. You know, hes a Human Being and he deserves to have a chance to have relaxation. But we might need to think about how we do that sort of aspect as well. So he can address them and they could hear him because that goes to the heart of the election. But other types of activities like playing golf or, you know, whatever, we might have to take a harder Line Approach to providing more limited circumstances for those. Do you think congressman, there is a way to tempt down the rhetoric that so many people will contribute to those sites . I noticed as i went through the many postings, the social Media Posting by Members Of Congress and other public. And almost all of them were of that elk. And yet there were some from the republicans that were very political in nature and they were accusatory in nature. Is there any way to tempt down the rhetoric . If it can be done, do you think we will see more of this . I mean the honest answer is i dont know. I have colleagues that say things that are inflammatory. But you know, they dont seem to be considering their approach. Certainly some of the very sad and disturbing. Im pretty sure thats not going to go away. Recognizing that thats there to try to address it. Come bay it. And for them to expose it and some of the comments that you just referenced are headed in that direction. And the other part is to make sure we take care of the protection part, and provide the protection that the candidates will need, the spectators need. To the sense, there has to be accountability. For more on this to the White House right now, what more can you tell us . Reporter well we know biden was proofed today less than an hour after alerting us to the incident. Saying Biden And Harris had both been made aware of what had happened and were being kept up to speed by the team. We got that statement from biden himself. Saying he was relieved and unharmed and he wanted to commend the work of the Secret Service and agencies that were working with the Secret Service for their vigilance and their efforts to keep the former president safe. He went on to say what we have heard the president say before, there is no place for political Violence Or Violence of any sort in our country. He said he has instructed his team to make sure the Secret Service has all the resources and capabilities and protective measures they need in order to protect former President Trump. That end, we know, two Secret Service officials and the acting director, he is either in the area now, in florida now, or on his way to florida. The fbi leading the investigation here, chris. And to have the director on the ground there. Involving the former president. We will look to see if we could hear from him tomorrow. Aaron gilchrist, Thank You. What is your take on who this guy is, and what more do we need to know . And he is not as concerned maybe for his life. Hes trying to do things that speak to him. And he is willing to take challenges. He carries them out. He had no experience. He was older, and then he tried to help in a different way. So hes definitely in that commitment to do things. Him having the best, he was doing something in preparation that he taught was going to end up maybe in a fire fight. Thats why he had the vest on. And it was interrupted. What do you make of some of the other things found around him. We know theres a rifle with a scope. Let me stop there. We heard a couple of different things that the press briefing. Somewhere between estimate and 300,000 yards from the president. Thats where he had huden in the bushes. Thats where he was found. Tell us about the scope. Tell us about the gun, and tell us about the other things that were found at the scene. I think he was actually waiting for President Trump to get closer. My view is he put the stuff there. Hes probably going to put the vest on. Any time you use a scope or an optic on a rifle, your field of vision goes down. Reporting it through the fence. Taking a look at maybe what was the best place that he would be able to have a shot. He loses peripheral version and probably didnt see the secret Service Agents walking up on him, but he was preparing for it. The fact i heard now, it was an ak47, which is a bit different than an ar15. Still very deadly. Not as accurate. But the round is flatter and heavier and it is still just as deadly. So there is a lot going into it. I think he was waiting for them to get closer. And he probably wasnt prepared for the secret Service Agent to be walking around in the free line. As the sniper, it could be seen as abnormal instead of behind it. So the secret Service Agent did a right thing. It might not have been an accurate shot, but he stopped that person because he didnt know exactly what he was looking at through that scope. Cedric, we mentioned at the top of the show there are at least a Dozen Police cars around maralago. This happened about a ten. Security is obviously very heightened. The security there is very heightened. So what is the role of local police now. The former president is still in that jurisdiction to help with security. This investigation is probably going to belong to the fbi and certainly local police will be there. And local police, local sheriffs offices including neighboring counties, theyre going to be very supportive of each other in making sure that the federal agencies that may be in charge of this investigation has all the information data, video footage, witness statements, whatever. They will assist in this investigation. But we will probably be secondary to that investigation, where i would suspect they would have the primary charge of this investigation. And can we talk about the technology . Just the idea that somebody could write down with a they saw. The next thing you know, it goes into the system and quickly, technology could pinpoint where it was. It is hard to imagine how they might have caught up with him. How widespread is it . Is it just lucky that they had it . This is important to having a community that is engaged and aware. People who are paying attention to their environment. And this person has the Tag Number that would appear suspicion. It would be interesting to learn more about that, and we will take over the next day or so. That information will send him to a data base. It comes back. Where it is not only in that particular moment, but where it has been in the past. And so that type of necknology along with the technology that we have talked about in the last session here, The Block here, around the importance of the utilization of technology as we continue with the stretch. This is the second threat. We have to take every precaution to make sure our president ial candidates and Anyone Else who were involved in this nation and this level are protected. We have to utilize all the Personnel Power that we would have and to integrate technology. Some that we would know about, and others that are still out there as well to that helpful plant. Because your agencies, they will be stretched. Youre going to see much more security in and around these president ial candidates. Center it will take a lot of resources. But Intelligence Gathering and information, support from the community, which is going to be hugely important in this case resolving themselves to identify. And it is a very important role in this as well. It is a good reminder. Rob, i wonder all the information that they have so far that they have gathered a lot more and just since that Press Conference took place. How do they use that as they approach this suspect, trying to get him to talk . It is a matter of if he even talks. Hes probably going to get a lawyer, and going to look at it that way. But anything that he gets as the Search Warrants will come in for his phone and emails. They will put it in their hands and they will try to find out what was behind this and what his motives were. Did he have help . Are they going to be looking at it as if there is something he could have done to predict this if he wasnt on radar. Even is kind of looking at it. You would get some interviewers in there and it is awesome and they will sit down with them. It wont be adversary at all. Rob damico, Thank You very much. Do we have any indication if hes talking, whether or not there is even a hint that were getting an idea of why, if he indeed did this, why he did it . It is good to be back with you. We dont know yet if hes talking. When he was pulled over first, he kept his mouth shut. He was compliant. It tells me he has been through this before. Not specifically with this charge, but hes had a Rap Sheet. As far as why he did it, he did post a bunch of bizarre Social Media videos, where he was complaining about the lack of support for ukraine, where he was urging more support for ukraine. He said this is a battle between good and evil. Of course, the disconnect there, hes able to see ukraine is on the side of good. But then he cant seem to understand by trying to assassinate a former president , hes on the side of evil. So obviously hes got some screws loose. And lets talk about his background. There have been many, many Run Ins with the laws, right, in the past . Yes, they are in North Carolina. Doesnt seem much of a Rap Sheet here in florida. We dont know how he got here. It did seem like he may have been trying to flee back to North Carolina with he was driving on i95 north right after the incident. He was caught in Martin County about 45 minutes north here of West Palm Beach, and he was arrested without incidents obtained. Now the feds are the ones that will be pursuing charges here. My office is going to presoup looking at warrants. But then the feds came in, saying we will be taking over this investigation. What does it mean theyre taking over . This will all be done in official court. It will be before a federal imagine state. He will be facing federal charges and penalties. That means they would have a host of other protection crimes here we if they were in the State Level and perhaps the the fact he was pointing it at the the feds seem to have tougher penalties for these kinds of crimes as they often do. They always do in a case. When it comes to an attempted Assassination Attempt. Do we know yet if he ever fired the rifle . If he did not, does that change the charges . You know, it should had not. If he has the intent of committing the crime, and he did something to make it happen. And point that gun at the former president. Apparently he pointed the gun at a secret Service Agent. I mean you dont have to fire the weapon to be Charge Haded with a lot of these crimes. We dont know if he fired the weapon. According to reports that ive seen, thats the only shots fired that came from kudos. And i know he got a lot of incidents. Its like finding a needle in the hay stack. They had to see Someone Poking an ar or an Ak47 Style Rifle between the gates at marla duo, behind the big thick bushes. They had to be aware. As soon as they saw him, they opened fire, so they could have avoided a real tragedy here. And obviously you were at the Press Conference, but you know the course. How absolutely difficult is it to a former president of the united states on that course. Given the location and given that, i guess what we would call the outer perimeter on the course is covered in pushes. Yeah, it is difficult. Unlike maralago, which son Palm Beach island.
