Alert maralago after an apparent Assassination Attempt on former president Donald Trump. He is home tonight unharmed but no less than a Dozen Police cars are visible at the resort and an Investigation Led by the fbi is underway after the Secret Service fired on an armed man while trump was on the course just a few hundred feet away. One person is in Law Enforcement Custody identified as ryan wellesley ralph, age 58 according to senior law and officials briefed on the matter. President biden, Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Walz are all expressing relief that trump is safe and Mike Johnson posted just last hour on Social Media calling him strong and resilient. Lets start at West Palm Beach were nbc News Correspondent Kathy Park is standing by. Describe the scene for us. What is the latest . Good evening. We are right in front of the Golf Course right now and i can tell you the security here has not let up. Earlier today we heard Law Enforcement really crediting the quick actions of a witness who spotted the suspect right away right before 2 00 this afternoon when the incident played out. Officials are saying that this witness saw a man jump out from the brush, the shrubbery that surrounds this Golf Course and was quick to actually write down the License Plate Number of the suspects getaway vehicle. It was a black nissan and then this witness who is not identified shared this information with Law Enforcement right away and that is when local Law Enforcement here on the ground was able to eventually track down the suspect along the interstate, but the interstate was pretty chaotic. Even getting to this location earlier today they were blocking off different ramps, roadways surrounding the Golf Course as the investigation pressed ahead but they were able to get the suspect and we heard earlier tonight that this individual was actually pretty compliant and surrendered to Law Enforcement quickly. Just to kind of go back a little bit and walk through exactly how we got here, it all unfolded around the 2 00 Hour Right before 2 00 p. M. This afternoon. The former president was on the Golf Course. We are hearing from sources, anywhere between the fifth and sixth hole, and typically, when the former president plays golf here or at any Golf Course, he has Security Detail that has this kind of protective bubble around him. They were out in front and they noticed something suspicious and noticed that the gunman was aiming toward the former president. That is when these agents decided to react quickly. They are fired at least four rounds but they are saying right now its unclear if the suspect actually fired at the agents, but we are told at this hour no injuries to report but obviously, after they heard shots fired, local, state, federal agencies moved in very quickly securing the area right now, even though security is pretty tight we are told there is no danger but obviously this is just the beginning of the investigation, and authorities are actually encouraging members of the public if you have any information, if youre in the area, witness anything, to contact them right away. With me now is nbcs Kim Delaney and and tom winter. You came out here, you on the phone, youve been on the computer. Whats the latest . The latest, according to the States Attorney there, this case is already going federal so the state is not even bringing prosecution. The reason why the state would do this this happens in New York when we see terrorism or other highprofile cases, it allows them to keep that suspect in custody until federal charges can be filed. Thats not going to apply here. Theyre already saying this is going to go federal right away so the specific types of charges they could bring are still a little bit unclear. What is important to notice that he did this interview with our colleagues last hour that you dont need to fire to be charged with attempted assassination so it will be interesting to see whether or not federal prosecutors have the evidence to bring that forward. He says this individual, ryan Wesley Routh, who has been identified according to Law Enforcement officials, as the alleged suspect, that apparently he was quote, lying in wait for trump, so he was waiting for the former president to get to that point in the Golf Course and then as kathy laid out, it was the Secret Service there that found him. As far as this investigation, the technology involved here, you can imagine maybe five, 10 years ago, how long it would have perhaps taken Law Enforcement to be able to find out where he was and the fact that he is from North Carolina Couldve made that more of a challenge except for here, this witness had a presence of mind to get a photograph of the car and to be able to get the License Plate. They put that into a Data Base in the realtime crime center. A lot of Law Enforcement agencies have this now. They type It In, so the license for the sake of conversation is abc 1234 they take that in then it says okay, in this instance, hes in i95 and they look at various spots were License Plate readers are capturing him and say oh, hes going northbound so 45 Minutes North of where the shooting occurred, or where he was engaged by Secret Service, they find him, they take him into custody and then they get the witness up to the scene to say hey, is that the guy you saw who was in the bushes and who the Secret Service fired at with the gun . He says yes, so that is apparently how theyre able to make this positive identification. Theyve got the car. Presumably they have the phones and the possible Twitter Account for him was just taken down. His Facebook Account was taken down earlier today so they will come through those things saved by those various Social Media companies so they will be able to try to figure out if this person was talking to anybody and i think the big question, ultimately, how did he purchase the gun because of he has multiple prior Felony Arrest he wouldve likely been prohibited from buying this weapon so did somebody give it to him . Did he purchase it illegally, did somebody give it to him illegally . Those are questions in the hours and days to come. Impossible to know, but you can certainly say we dont know whether he would be in custody if it were not for that good samaritan hero fast thinking, you know, passerby who thought you know, id better Write This Down and immediately contacted police, but what more do we know about ryan Wesley Routh because i read that he is the only person in the country with his Name And Date of birth. What do we know about them . Thats what it looks like from Public Records and so a portrait of him is emerging. It is not conclusive. It does not tell us definitively about motive but we know a few things. We know he lived for a long time in North Carolina and there appears to of been a number of criminal convictions there including one conviction for possession of a Weapon Of Mass Destruction back in 2002. Unclear exactly what that was about. Other charges and convictions related to possessing stolen property. Two, we read he moved to hawaii at one point. We have a long history of tweets now with some very strange things including at one point inviting the North Korean dictator, kim jongun, to go to hawaii to do work with him. We also know he was passionate about the ukraine war, on the side of the ukrainians and traveled to ukraine. There is a Youtube Video we have authenticated where he is giving an interview in describing his efforts to go try to fight for the ukrainian cause but because he was 56 years old at the time with no Military Experience they didnt accept him as a fighter than he tried to recruit people to that cause. At one point he had a scheme to try to recruit former afghan prou. S. Fighters to go fight for ukraine so those are the kinds of things we are learning about him. Again, it does not tell us why he might have done this and what his motive may have been, and tom is right. With these convictions it raises a question about how he possessed an Assault Rifle but clearly as you said at the beginning, there were a lot of lucky things here. The first thing is that the Secret Service saw that Rifle Poking out of the brush on the outskirts of this Golf Course is theyre going to clear the next hole for Donald Trump to play. That was a lucky thing but still raises questions as to how yet again, someone got within Rifle Range of the former president. I guess to be fair, we could ask, was it lucky or was it a secret Service Agent who was very alert and doing his job extraordinarily well. Thats a fair point. Absolutely right and that is the point of going ahead of mr. Trump at the Golf Course and looking for threats and clearing the hole with that Security Bubble but you heard the Palm Beach Law Enforcement officials at the News Conference a few hours ago point out that Donald Trump does not have the same level of security the current president would have and that if he was president , it is possible the entire Golf Course wouldve been cleared in advance when he played and that is going to raise some questions because hes already had one attempt on his life. There is intelligence suggesting the iranians are trying to kill him. If Donald Trump doesnt merit maximum secret Service Protection at this point, who does, so there will be questions asked again about what kind of resources they are bringing to bear to protect Donald Trump. Yes and some of those questions are already being raised by various members whose job it is to oversee this and some others who are supporters of Donald Trump, but tom, im wondering, two Assassination Attempts and just a little over two months, and i wonder if one of the things they will be looking for, maybe they will find if they are scrubbing what is in his computer, is how closely he followed the first Assassination Attempt. You have to raise the question of a copycat. You absolutely do, and to Piggyback Off of What Ken was just mentioning, we still have a short amount of time but a long way to go with respect to the president ial election and i can tell you tonight based on our reporting there are serious questions being asked at the top of federal Law Enforcement in this country as to how does the rest of this campaign go . We have candidates crisscrossing the country. They love these big rallies. They love these outdoor events. Who is tracking what, what is happening, how are these individuals aware of trumps travels or anybody elses travels and we are told that the Threat Stream this is now blatantly obvious toward former President Trump that the amount of threats coming in is high. The amount of threats coming in against Vice President Kamala Harris, very high, along with her Running Mate so i think the secret Service Tonight is pausing and saying, how do we possibly protect all these people and oh, by The Way, less than a mile from where you and i are sitting a week from today people are coming into town, 104 and carries, foreign leaders, it is the u. N. General Assembly Week where you have everybody in town so now the Secret Service is going to be there having to protect all this. Working in their favor is the fact they have the new York City Police Department that can throw hundreds of cups, over 1000 cops at this and try to help them out as far as protecting everybody who is here, but it is a huge question, not as if we are in quote unquote peace times. We have the middle east, we have israel and her us, israel and hezbollah. Iran is involved. To kens point, that is an active concern from Law Enforcement. They did arrest somebody hoping to put together an Assassination Plot sympathetic to iran, so you have that is a potential issue and you obviously have what russia has been doing with invading ukraine, something that came up perhaps with this individuals background, so putting it all together, there are serious threats that exist on top of the challenge normally of running the you and ga are the amount of events would typically have in a Campaign Season when you have two candidates, so it is a lot. Thank you so much. Lets bring in Msnbc Contributor Carol lenaghan investigative reporter who won a Pulitzer Prize for her reporting on the Secret Service. Let me pick up, carol, were tom just left off. Tell us about staffing at the Secret Service because it was raised after the first Assassination Attempt in already those questions are being asked again now. You know there is a lot of struggle in the Secret Service at all times because for the last 12 years there have been caps on how many people they can hire, and what i have heard ever since the last Assassination Attempt, i cant believe im saying the last Assassination Attempt, in july, is that the number of people who are specially trained tacticians, is exceedingly low. In other words, the stable of people who do countersurveillance, counter sniper, Cover And Evacuation of what is called a counter assault team, those specialists who are really important in protecting the president in addition to his working shift, the Security Detail immediately around him, that group is really on hard times. There are far fewer of them than there have been in the past, and that is a real challenge. Tom earlier was exactly right that this agency is responsible right now for protecting more than 40 people in addition to the president , and now, at the Vice President ial candidate on the republican side, the former president , the republican nominee. Add that to the number, and on top of that, after the Assassination Attempt, you have the secret Service Director telling people, we are beefing up to the hilt, the protection for trump, for Kamala Harris, for Joe Biden, for the two Vice President ial candidates. All of these people are getting not president ial level treatment, but getting very close to president iallevel treatment. Theyre getting support from the military and still, this happened, which is going to be the burning question. A smart and alert secret Service Agent saw a weapon and a man on the perimeter, but why would a man with a long gone be that close to Donald Trump . And, they know that the bushes are there. The Palm Beach County Sheriff told reporters just how close that gunman actually was to the former president of the united states. Let me play that sound. At this level that he is at right now, he is not the sitting president. If he was, we would have had this entire Golf Course surrounded but because he is not, security is limited to the areas of the Secret Service as deep as possible. I would imagine the next time he comes to a Golf Course there will probably be more people around the perimeter, but the Secret Service did exactly what they shouldve done. So, even if in congress would have to get involved, i preserve even if we need to hire more secret Service Agents, we need to have more people around Donald Trump, Kamala Harris, the president , all the other people that you talked about, it is not like they can step the fingers, right . Maybe they can call on some retired agents, but is it even realistic to think that they could significantly ramp up protection between now and Election Day . You know, i want to stress two things in answer to again a very good question. Number one, the candidate is probably going to have to do something different in order to protect himself and i dont mean that the secret Service Cant protect him, but it is true, they cant snap their fingers and create a fortress around him and allow him to also golf on a course that is accessible by roadways and residential streets. You know, there is going to have to be some sort of consideration of another kind of Security Bubble around him, and some changes in his routine of a Golf Course that is Semi Public and next to residential streets probably is not ideal. After the shooting in butler, the then director of the Secret Service told the Trump Campaign no more outdoor events for a little while, until we figure out how to secure you in those places. I think you are going to see the director and now, Acting Director Ron Rowe come out and say either to the campaign or publicly say we are going to have to do something differently because even if every single department of Homeland Security Agent gets pulled up from the border or from Homeland Investigations or from tsa, if all of these agents get put on to security for the candidates, i still dont think that is going to really be either practical, or enough. I dont need to tell you how integral being around people, being around voters is, especially toward the end of the campaign, going into battleground states. Yes, holding big rallies, outdoor rallies, but going into small places, going into coffee shops, going into diners, they call them otr, Off The Record, but an open public places, and i guess my question is about to what extent can you really limit that, and who has the final say. Take us inside the power structure. If the Acting Director of the Secret Service says to Kamala Harris or Donald Trump, you cant do an outdoor rally anymore, Donald Trump, who by The Way, golfs almost every chance he can, certainly when he is near one of his courses, he often has meetings there. He often is that with close friends and people who have donated to his campaign, can he say yes i am or do they have the final word . How does that work . There is no hard and fast absolute rule other than a candidate can say you know what . Im going to do what i want to do. Im going to take the risk they want to take, and so sorry. They could do that. But, The General, practical reality is the Secret Service tries to cajole and pressure and basically Guilt Trip President s and their staff and candidates and their staff to do what is safe. I mean, ive had agents tell me about the time they insisted that Bulletproof Glass be put up and then Candidate Obama was president elect. When he was at grant park, there were a lot of questions, how are we going to protect this guy who has literally a bullseye on him because he is about to be the first black president , and they insisted, we are putting up Bulletproof Glass, and the story. But, you asked the right question. What can the candidate or the President Say, take a hike. And the answer is yes, he can. He can continue to golf and hold outdoor events, but i think hes going to be counseled that this is not safe. You will remember that former President S, then President S, often golfed insecure military bases where a guy with a gun would not have been able to poke through the fence. That just would not have happened. You may remember you brought it up, actually, chris. Otrs. Off the record is The Way to go when a President Or Candidate is trying to interact with the public. It is often a great way in the Secret Services view, because it is a surprise. No assassin can be laying in wait as, you know, Matthew Crookes was, or as the suspect ryan Wesley Routh was. Nobody can be laying in waIt In planning if it is Off The Record and finally, you said it earlier, too, and i dont want to forget this point. It is so important for candidates to be near the people in the weeks and days before the election. Well, everyone now knows that is what got John F kennedy killed. He insisted to the Secret Service over and over again, i want open car so that voters can see me coming by. I want to pull over in the limousine and shake the hands of these individuals are going to vote for me. As he said to one Secret Service detail leader, i would not be elected Dog Catcher if i listened to you people and he was sort of saying it sarcastically to the secret Service Agents at the time. Well, he was shot the next day in an Opentop Car insisting that he had to be close to the people or he would not get elected. It was a risk he talked about blithely, and it cost him his life. The investigation and that is still ongoing and now, according to the fbi, yet another apparent attempt and another investigation is underway even as we speak. Weve deployed a number of resources including investigative teams, Crisis Response Team members, Bomb Technicians and evidence Response Team members, as well. What we need right now is for the public to avoid the area around the Golf Course. We are actually hearing very little and in terms of trump Social Media account where usually we hear the most from, we have heard zero since the attempted assassination took place. We know Speaker Johnson was at maralago after the attempted shooting. He posted on his X Account that he and his wife were down alongside of him and that they were met with him for multiple hours. We have seen tweets from both of his sons, one of his sons, eric junior, suggesting that something has to change. This is a family that has gone through two attempted assassinations apparently of their father and this is a moment here for the campaign where they find themselves 51 days away from Election Day and understanding, as you were just noted, this is when you really see the schedule rampup. He has planned stops this week in michigan and North Carolina. Its not clear whether those events will proceed as originally planned, but we saw a change in the types of events they put on in the immediate aftermath of the Butler Shooting and ultimately the large outdoor rallies were are fewer since then. We have seen events that have been pushed inside. For Donald Trump, that is not the kind of event he likes to have. He likes to have as many thousands as possible be in attendance but he likes to do these Off The Record stops for the campaign doesnt announce them ahead of time but he drops into a Waffle House or a local diner and this could very well change the Decisionmaking Process of the Campaign Operation as they look to how to potentially proceed. Were talking about early Voting Beginning in a great many states this week. Battle ground wisconsin, voters there will begin receiving their mail ballots on thursday so this is a crucial time to be out on the Campaign Trail for Donald Trump and yet this apparent attempt at his assassination leads to a lot of questions about the security around him going forward. We know President Biden has released a statement on the incident and said he is relieved the former president is unharmed and highlighted the active investigation. What else are you hearing tonight . We knew President Biden and Vice President harris had been briefed about this incident in the minutes before it happened this afternoon in the president expressed his relief again that the former president was not heard of this incident. In the statement put out just before your program came on the air he went on to say he was commending the work of the Secret Service and their Law Enforcement partners for their vigilance and efforts to keep the former president and people around him safe. He went on to say that something we heard from Vice President harris in a post that she put on twitter and from others as well, that there is no place for political violence or any violence ever in our country. He went on to say he is directing his team to continue to ensure the Secret Service has every Resource Capability and protective measure necessary to ensure the former president continued safety. We know the President S national security team, his director of the Secret Service quite likely along with the secretary of Homeland Security, national Security Advisor would have been briefing the president about what happened today in florida. He will get another briefing likely tomorrow as part of his daily president ial brief. At this point, we have also learned the Acting Director of the Secret Service was going to florida to not necessarily oversee what is happening there. Obviously we know the fbi is leading the investigation at this point you will remember after july there were all these questions about where was the director at that time and how could something like this happened. Those were the questions we heard back then but this time and really just a couple of hours since this incident happened, we knew the director of the Secret Service was on his way to be in the area, which i should note, West Palm Beach is where the secret Service Director started his Law Enforcement career, so he is familiar with the area and will be able to talk to the agents on the ground there both about what happened there in about The General security for President Trump. Im wondering, weve heard a lot of concern raised by allies of the former president , but we all know from what happened in butler, pennsylvania that if he had not turned his head, who knows if it wouldve been a much different situation. As it was, he injured his ear. The Bullet Whizzed by him but it couldve been much worse. Has he ever expressed any concern about his protective detail or expressed any fear that he is not getting the kind of secret Service Protection that he needs . No, off the top of my head directly from Donald Trump i dont believe we have heard that specifically. We knew there would definitely be questions after butler about what Donald Trump would say. I have not had a Neardeath Experience and would not be one to judge how somebody would react, especially in the immediacy after a moment like that but Donald Trump actually publicly thanks the Secret Service and applauded them for their work in the aftermath of the attempted assassination in pennsylvania and of course the secret Service Director at the time made her way into milwaukee at the Republican National Convention and met with him. To my understanding was a difficult conversation. There were multiple republican senators on site in milwaukee that all but chased the secret Service Director down at the time expressing their frustrations. This was an agency that has come under scrutiny but for Donald Trump, he has maintained that he wanted to continue to do these types of outdoor events. There were questions about whether those should be allowed to proceed but they had plexiglas that is been put around him and we have not seen his Willingness Or Eagerness to not be on the Campaign Trail because of potential security threats. He needs to put himself out there in situations like this, of course, continue to go and make the decision to go on the Golf Course here. This is i think a moment undoubtedly for the Campaign Staff who i travel and cover this campaign. These are folks who are with them day in and day out, secret Service Agents you recognize from stop to stop. This one agent in particular, they did their job today. The Security Apparatus ultimately protected the former president current nominee, potentially future president here today but this comes at such a certain moment in time where of course we had seen some on the right have questioned out loud whether there is some conspiracy to have allowed these attempted assassinations to come within striking distance of Donald Trump. There is no evidence that would back up such conspiracies or claims, and yet at the heart of those conspiracies, and the potential you could say understandable concern about the vitriolic State Of Affairs and individuals who clearly have the intent to harm Donald Trump or to seek violence as a means to an end for what is a moment in america that is incredibly difficult, and one that has clearly led to moments that put the former President S life on the line. Tonight, even more unsettled. As lon pointed out, the man with a rifle with a scope on it came within three to 500 yards of the former president on the Golf Course today. I want to bring in nbc Law Enforcement analyst and secret Service Agent evie. Also former Police Chief for the cobb county. We know Donald Trump spends a lot of time on Golf Courses. So did barack obama, and you were on his protection detail. The Secret Service has long been concerned about Golf Courses generally, but some of these in particular that are so close is carolyn it was talking about earlier, to busy roads how tough is it to protect in a situation like that . This is the second Assassination Attempt and they both were done outdoors. Outdoors is always a problem. And outside the perimeter technically in both cases. Yes, youre thinking the security perimeter, that in a bubble. When we think of the inner bubble we think of the agents around the President Securing him but in both circumstances, the threat is coming from outside and from a distance, so now were looking at an element that needs to shift. Typically when we look at outer perimeters, you typically relied on local police and national police so they could give you the brunt of the force of the agents could be closer to the protective. I think thats going to be changing a lot because typically that is where the element of the Secret Service is. Youre probably going to see actors now. I do think people are a bit emboldened. Within two months, a second attempt. That is a short window of time that somebody is thinking if somebody could get that close at a trump rally, i wonder what i can do and sadly i think we are going to see quite a few copycats stepping up. Also, what we are hearing is increased number of threats not just toward President Trump, toward other protect these Kamala Harris, the president himself, these are things you want to look out for. We have been talking about the fact that they are stretched. The Secret Service is stretched and i wonder what are the kinds of conversations that are happening right now . How do we take what we have . How do we move people around, if there are going to be conversations about more security for Donald Trump at this point, two apparent Assassination Attempts, what are the conversations going on behind the scenes right now . By The Way, the Acting Head of the Secret Service is on his way, as we have said, to Palm Beach right now. I think that is great and smart on his part because hes thinking, im going to have to go before congress at some point. I need to have answers. Im going to go on the ground and find out myself what is going on. That is a smart move. Also to be there to talk to the agents to understand what happened because he is going to be questioned and wants to have the components together to answer those questions, as any leader should. Clearly the game has changed. Something is shifting in the world. So, The Way Secret Service has been doing protection, not that it is wrong, it is just changing, and The Way they are doing the protection is going to have to shift, so you Cant Hire 1500 agents, 2000 agents to change things. Were not looking at a long Term Change right now. Right now we just need to get to the election and make sure everybody is safe. What are some of the conversations you can have . Talk to your protect these. We need to minimize outdoor events, we need to minimize going outdoors in general. It is so hard to protect somebody when you have all the space you need to look at. When you have an indoor event ive got walls. Its secure. I post. I decide for my Entry Points are. I funnel people through that entry point, i post that entry point. I put magnetometers, i put my assets, done, great day, but when you are outdoors how can you secure every inch . Also, this scenario, or shooter was able to get away. It was only because a witness saw him, how the presence of mind to write down the License Plates, to take video and inform Law Enforcement and he was found later on the highway because the License Plate readers picked up his License Plate. These are the things we need to look at. The game is changing. Talk to your protect these. Tell them we need to mitigate movements, what we should be doing. The other thing is thinking about how you are allocating the assets, pulling in extra assets, maybe local Law Enforcement is not enough, maybe having some type of Military Presence or personnel in the outer perimeters to help mitigate. Just by seeing the presence its called deterrence. Just by seeing the presence of armed officials, whether local police or military officials, it deters somebody from doing something. When i would do Protection Assignments they would ask me how many uniforms do you want and i would give a number because uniforms means a bad actor is going to see the uniform and say oh, i clearly recognize that as a police officer. Im not going to go that direction, so even having the presence around that will deter bad actors. If somebody thinks theyre going to get caught, im not going to do it. Right now, Donald Trump is home at maralago safe and sound. People have spent time with him, including the speaker of the house, but we mentioned at the top of the show, now there are no less than a Dozen Police cars with a very visible presence outside of maralago. Obviously, after the fact, what are the key questions you have as this investigation is ongoing . I think the immediate question yet to be answered is what was the motive behind the shooting, how long have the shooting been planned, whether other individuals involved other than this particular gunman himself. Fortunately, No One was injured, but clearly as you just heard, these threats are going to become possibly more of a threat to us as a nation as we attempt to protect these candidates. You think so too . Im sorry . You think there will be more copycats . You worry about that . Will certainly, you have to worry about it and here again i think this is a second attempt on the former President S life in the last eight weeks, and who may be the next target . We dont know so it certainly is going to require further planning by the Secret Service as these candidates move around from one location to another. They are not going to be inside all the time. I think we have to come to terms with that. They have their own personalities. They have to move around outside. They want to go to rallies, they want to be outside and meet people and they also may decide they want to go out and do something leisurely like the former president was doing today so its going to require work. Local Law Enforcement is being trained and even as much as the Secret Service may be strained, as reported, with agents, local Law Enforcement is also strained with providing service, so one thing that comes to mind for me that i think is going to be very important is the continued use of technology such as License Plates readers and Drone Technology and other technology that will come into the spaces where you may have a shortage of personnel, but we have to protect all of these protect these, and the primary persons, agencies responsible to the Secret Service, that is also it but it is also incumbent that they have the support of local Law Enforcement, which they do, so this is going to be a challenge. Its not going to be an impossible task but it certainly is going to put strain on those agencies but the utilization of Technology And Intelligence information that can be gathered will be helpful in order to supplant some of these [ inaudible ] certainly technology was key in the apprehension of the suspect tonight. As we learn more about what the fbi is describing is another apparent Assassination Attempt on Donald Trumps life, the congressional Task Force investigating the first one is demanding answers tonight. The Chairman Congressman Mike Kelly and ranking Member Jason Crow said in a statement, we have requested a briefing with the u. S. Secret service about what happened and how security responded. We are thankful that the former president was not harmed but remain deeply concerned about political violence and condemn It In all its forms. The Task Force will share updates as we learn more. Joining me now, jared moskowitz, one of the members of the Task Force on the attempted assassination of Donald Trump. After the close of briefing you all got into the first Assassination Attempt, a lot of members were asked to have a question i now ask you under different circumstances. Are you now confident the Secret Service has the resources it needs to protect President Trump and Kamala Harris and Joe Biden . I never thought that first i would be appointed to an assassination Task Force. While on that assassination Task Force there would be a second Assassination Attempt just two months from the first one, only a month into the formation of this Task Force so i am deeply concerned that right now we dont have a good handle on the situation. The idea that there has been two attempts and they have been able to get close enough to the former president is deeply disturbing. I am concerned that Donald Trump is actually not safe. Quite frankly, i dont know if there is any evidence to show that he is safe. The fact that there has been these two attempts, so the Secret Service has a lot to ask for this is since the Officer Saw the thread and neutralized it, the question really is, what process allowed the thread to get so close to the former president , especially with the fact that there was an Assassination Attempt just two months ago so i am concerned. I was about 15 minutes from the Golf Course today on a private matter but i was in the vicinity and i know the sheriff there. I know the State Attorney there. These are the highestquality individuals so i think they are going to do an investigation to get to the bottom of it. I saw that Governor Desantis said he was probably going to either do their own investigation which i think is warranted i have a lot of questions. How did someone who clearly has mental illness and looks like he has potentially a Rap Sheet from before this event, how did he buy that gun, where did he buy that gun . In florida we have Red Flag laws that were passed after the shooting at my high school, Marjory Stoneman douglas a mile away from the house right now, and so im curious if you got that gun here or if he bought it somewhere else, so there are a lot of questions tonight. We still dont know the motive from the first shooter. That still has not been released to the public, so i think the public has every right to demand right now that the fbi Secret Service come out and start sharing this information with the american public. There is a new Acting Head of the Secret Service, as you know, The One who was in charge when the first Assassination Attempt occurred resigned. Are you confident, based on what you have learned behind close doors with your committee, the other questions youve asked, maybe answers that you have gotten, that the situation within the Secret Service is stronger, safer for the candidates now less than two months out and as was pointed out earlier in the show, already some mailin ballots are going out. Early voting will begin. Is this going to impact how we run free and fair elections, and allow voters to see their candidates . This cannot become normal. We have seen mass shootings become normal in this country but Assassination Attempts on our leaders cannot become normal in this country. It is scary to think that mentally ill people have such easy access to weapons, but they should not also have easy access to our President S and former President S, and so look, i think the new leader of the Secret Service is definitely headed in a much better direction than the director that resigned. I think that was clear from her testimony and the fact that she did not even visit the site of the first Assassination Attempt, so i think what needs to happen now is the Secret Service, the fbi, Law Enforcement agencies, Homeland Security, everyone is moving fast with their investigation and the first Assassination Attempt. But they need to share that information with the american people. I appreciate that the Task Force is getting started but you have people on the left to think the attempted assassination of former President Trump was staged and people on the right who think it was the deep state and that is because theyre not getting any information. When there is a vacuum, misinformation will fill that space and so i plead with the fbi and Homeland Security and Law Enforcement agencies to start having Press Conferences and sharing information on these investigations in real time with the american people.
