[music playing] good evening im jonathan. Were following Breaking News on the apparent Assassination Attempt against trump. Authorities have one person in custody and recovered an ak47 and a scope at the scene. Secret Service Agents spotted a weapon in the bushes outside trumps west Palm Beach Golf course when it opened fire. Prompting the suspect to flee the scene. Heres what authorities said at a Press Conference in just the last hour. This afternoon, a call of shots fired. We were notified of that and we had units here that immediately sealed off the area. Fortunately we were able to locate a witness that came to us and said hey i saw the guy running out of the bushes. He jumped into a black nissan and i took a picture of the vehicle and the tag. Which was great. So, we had that information, our Realtime Crime Center put it out to the License Plate readers. And we were able to get a hit on that vehicle on i95 as it was headed into Martin County. We got ahold of Martin County Sheriffs Office. Alerted them. And they pulled the vehicle over and detained the guy. After that we took the victim, im sorry the witness that witnessed the incident, flew him up there and he identified as the person that he saw running out of the bushes that jumped into the car. Now, in the bushes where this guy was is an Ak47 Style Rifle with a scope, two backpacks which were hung on the fence that had Ceramic Tile in them and a Go Pro which he was going to take pictures of. So those are being processed right now. The secret Service Agent that was on the course did a fantastic job. What they do is, they have an agent that jumps one hole ahead of time toward where the president was at. He was able to spot this rifle that was sticking out of the fence and immediately apprehend the vehicle at the time the individual took off. We have a personal in custody that is a potential suspect. We have a little more work to do on it but as we usually do. As soon as we decide were going to book him into the County Jail and the charges hes going to be booked into. Well get those to you and well get a picture to you and well get his background. Trump is now back at Mara Lago and his spokesperson says hes fine. And the president just reu released a statement. Frank, thank you very much for being here. A couple of questions for you, from all the information we just heard from the clip of the Press Conference we just showed, what stands out to you,. Reporter wow so many take aways here jonathan. Number one this person came very, very close to killing either secret Service Agents and or a nominee for the Republican Party for president. Technology worked today. The License Plate reader, the witness. Old Fashion Police Work and we see newfangled Police Work with regard to the witness who took a picture of the License Plate. Theres a Toll Booth off of 95 that they spot this License Plate. Martin County Sheriff pulls the car over 45 miles north of the gulf course. But theres so much going on here. You know you just heard the sheriff refer to a backpack with Ceramic Tiles in it. What he might be referring to here is the ceramic plates that get inserted into Body Armour that defend you against high powered rifle shots. So he might have been prepared to be shot at with high powered rifles. Hes probably going to talk. Hes probably going to be able to tell us why he did this in his diluted mind. We have to try to make sense of the senseless. And Theres Something that i want to get off my chest which is quite obvious. This is now a second Assassination Attempt. They are challenged in Open Carry states with regard to open air events. Have we reached the place in our society where the guns have prevented us from protecting ourselves. And even the most protected people in our country. Thats an excellent point about protecting elected officials in Open Carry states. You mentioned the Ceramic Tiles frank and what they might be used for. I also found it interesting a Go Prothey found attached to the fence. Is that, usual . Is that something that, that has been found at other potential Crime Scenes like this . We have had shootings and mass shootings in this country. Within the last couple of years, that have been live streamed. So its quite possible that this individual was thinking about or was actually planning on live streaming this either on some platform he was on. And this is not unusual. You can now live stream an Assassination Attempt. We dont know if that was the attempt. But the Go Pro might be the reason was there. Frank, let me ask you about the whip for a moment. Weapon for a moment. Its a question i asked earlier. The ar47, is it generally a russian made weapon but the fact that its an ak47. Were more accustomed to hearing about ar15s as We Saw in Butler Pennsylvania or those that are modified to be more like ar15s as many of the mass shootings we see around this country. It strikes me as a little unusual to hear that an ak47 was used in this incident. Its the ar15 and those style weapons that become the Weapon Of Choice for shootings. But ak47 is a bit different. A bit odd. It was produced in russia 1948, 1949 its been around forever and continues to be upgraded and reproduced. And the family of weapons that can be produced elsewhere. Were not sure if this was the real Mccoy Or Something in the family of ak47. The range is hundreds of yards. Thats what were talking about here. Its as scary if not more than the ar15. It could be a very old weapon. We dont know where thats been. Where he got it from. The atf is scrambling im sure right flow to trace that weapon. Was it stolen, did he have legal possession of it. Where did it come from. Its an old weapon, has been around forever. Now we hear theres a scope. Theres a scope. We were prepared to take, where attacks are on internet. The likelihood it would happen again i think frightens everyone in this country so soon after the fact. Although we know theres people out there who are self radicalized by the fact they see what one Mass Killing does and then thinks i think i can match that or even one up it. I would think its safe to assume that with a high degree of possibility, that when they go through this guys social media. His google searches and everything else. Id be surprised if they dont find references and searching regarding butler, pennsylvania and perhaps other Assassination Attempts. If you see it as we mentioned in all the school shootings. They seem to emulate each other. Its almost as if the seed of the idea is planted in their heads and if theyre seeking Fame Or Infamy or martyrdom. This is a way to have your voice heard. Send some kind of message i am here. Specifically if youve been someone whos been largely ignored. Dont be surprised if the fbi or Secret Service has him some where in their radar. He may be somebody who theyve heard from. But School Shooters are emulating and studying previous shooters and why would it be different for adults who are looking at infamy, the Copy Cat Factor is real. The one thing that makes Todays Incident different from what happened in butler, pennsylvania, the Assassination Attempt there is ryan Wesley Routh is alive. The alleged, the alleged assailant in p. A. Was killed by Law Enforcement there. So Law Enforcement had to comb through his social media. Talk about the significance that ryan Wesley Routh is alive and in police custody. What that means for the investigation going forward. Well, so its interesting. Obviously, it may be easier to get that key question answered about motivation. The key question answered perhaps about whether theres coconspirators, accomplices. When did he start thinking about this and why you could learn an awful lot. In regards to investigation, clearly were looking at a criminal prosecution. It will likely go federal. You heard the Sheriff Talk about we have the guy in county custody. Well be doing charges. You saw the District Attorney at the Press Conference. Dont be surprised if those local State Charges turn over to federal charges if its determined that this in fact, a real Assassination Attempt or even an assault on federal agents with regard to Secret Service. The key here is you know have a subject that youre going to prosecute. Youre going to interrogate. Of course hes been read his miranda rights. Thats his Right And Privilege but, we can learn an awful lot from a subject whos captured alive. You know, frank, were obviously close to 50 days out from the election. It is the most intense period of campaigning for these candidates. It is what it all comes down to and well talk about this in a minute. As to whether or not it changes anything for the Trump Campaign. But from a Security Point of view from a Law Enforcement secret Service Point of view. The matrix is changing all the time. The fact that this has happened twice within months. And connections over seas that have not yet materialized. We know theres hostile state actors, Nonstate Actors that have vowed to go after the former president. You have people in this country as you just eluded to mentally troubled that may be going after the former president. All of these threats, would it require the Secret Service to encourage the former president to change anything in the way he goes about his business . So, theres an inevitable sit down with protectees across the secret Service Spectrum about open air events. This is going to happen. I guarantee you. The question i cant, i Cant Answer right now is whether each protectee is going to go with the program. In other words will Donald Trump if encouraged by the Secret Service to stop golfing or to change Golf Courses or do something thats far more protected. Will he abide by that. I think in these next few weeks i would take the word of the protective service. I think were already living in a world where nominees are speaking from behind Bullet Proof barriers. Where are the perimeter. The more you move the perimeter out. Were already hearing the shooter was behind the Fence Line of the Golf Course, where do you put your perimeter . How many agents. How many Police Officers do you need an entire square acre . Do you need miles of perimeter. These are questions that almost cant be answered because theyre cost prohibitive and resource prohibitive. Im told by a source familiar that unfolded there was that Donald Trump was on the fifth hole of his west Palm Beach Golf course. Along With Wilcox who is a friend. That point in time when they heard multiple gunshots it was not clear if it was the Secret Service was the lone to shoot or this gunman. We know at that point in time the Secret Service then covered Donald Trump and took him to the Golf Course where he held far while before returning him to maralago. I think youre at a moment where youre 50 days out from a general election. I dont think you could have under stated the gravity of this here. Were talking about two attempted Assassination Attempts. We know from our conversations with people who are voters, americans on the ground that there are fears of violence, further violence in the country. And where is the united states heading here. We have heard talk of potential civil war. We have, we will watch January 6th unfold and the willingness of thousands of individuals to go and attack Police Officers. We have watched Members Of Congress be shot at. We have watched now a former president of the united states apparently two attempted assassinations. It is cause for alarm and concern, We Saw in the immediate aftermath after the pennsylvania attack. Donald trump went to the republican convention, at least his tenor was more solemn. A little re retrospective. That quickly changed. I think the rhetoric of the Politics Today is intense. In any Way Anybody would stand by any actions being taken. On the Trump Campaign, you have Campaign Staffers who are now involved in two incidents here. You have secret Service Agents who are there putting their lives on the line. Protecting him. These are a detail that follow around Donald Trump around the country. He was just on the west coast swing. I was just out there at the press rally. He was just there in Los Angeles where there were Secret Service. That were stationed with their snipers. They were looking out across the Golf Course there. You have folks that are on high understanding that Donald Trump is a target. We know iran had a plot of an Assassination Attempt according to the department of just at Justin Smith justice. Its not clear who this person is. But theres No Doubt that candidates are a target. Bring us inside the thinking of the Trump Campaign and maybe have a bit of a political discussion. Because the Trump Campaign, sent out a Fund Raising text and a Fund Raising email within a couple of hours of this incident. Im not going to read what E Mail says. But can you tell us the thinking inside the Trump Campaign where they found thought it, right and appropriate to fund raise off of a second now second Assassination Attempt. I do not have the answer to that jonathan. Other than, i saw the email and the Text Messages that youre referring to here. This is a campaign that, you know, i dont know. I mean the situation around this here is tough, jonathan. I dont want to minimize the threat that the former president faced in any way. I dont know exactly what is behind the campaigns thinking on their part. They reached out to a couple. The notes do the talking. Donald trump we should note he of course had no Campaign Events today. He was playing golf. He has no campaign stops tomorrow. He has stops in michigan on tuesday and in north carolina. All of this is happening at a time when early ballots are going out in several states this week. Thursday. Voters are going to start to receive their mail in ballots here. I think objectively, as a reporter, having conversations with folks around the country on the ground. I think that this only increases the concern about violence in our politics here today. And in no way should any individual be targeted and around the campaigns die Tphapl Eubs Dynamics and who is making the decisions to send Fund Raising. In many ways this is Playing Realtime for the Trump Family and a Campaign Staff that is figuring out what their candidate is being targeted. Exactly how to respond. More now on what the fbi is calling another apparently Assassination Attempt against Donald Trump. The suspect has been identified as routh. The fbi is leading the investigation and reports Donald Trump is unharmed. Vice President Nominee j. D. Lets bring in Nbc News white House Correspondent Aaron Gillcrest. You have updated information for us, what can you tell us. Reporter i do, Kelly Odonnell has just learned the director of The Agency started his career in West Palm Beach. And now after the first attempt the secret Service Director is now heading to florida to obviously talk be the agents that are a part of the president s, the Formers President s detail there. I think it sort of references the severity of the moment to have in just a couple of months time two Assassination Attempts on a former president as the fbi is characterized this particular incident to be at the same time, were also learning that theres been a briefing of the Majority Leader in the senate. Chuck schumer by the Acting Director of the Secret Service. Schumer putting out a statement saying he applauds the Secret Service for his quick response. Adding theres no place in in country for political violence of any kind. That statement echoes statements that weve also heard this afternoon from Vice President harris. She posted on x to her personal account rather to her official account, that she was glad that former President Trump was safe and not injured and she also said that violence has no place in america. The White House did tell us earlier today that both the Vice President and president biden were briefed on this incident. Made aware of what was going on in florida and that think would be kept up to speed by their teams here in washington. And obviously this is something guys that the administration having gone through this would not have anticipated and its something that the president would be taking seriously and to learn the director of the Secret Service is now on the way to the scene to be actively involved on the ground with the investigation thats happening there. Really i think speaks to the severity of the moment. Nbc news white House Correspondent Aaron Gillcrest thank you. Lets bring into the Investigation Ron D amico. Its good to have you on the show. Lets break down with the arrivalling of the actor of the the director of the Secret Service. What that pertains for this investigation. We know it means a lot due to the severity of the moment. But does it change any of the resources that may be available for this investigation and the Communication Flow from the ground all the way to the highest levels of government. I dont know if it changes that. I think what youre seeing is all the mistakes you saw in pennsylvania. The secret Service Director not even going up to the site. I think you see the fbi calling it an Assassination Attempt very quickly. I think they got hit before for not doing that right up front. I think what youre seeing is, theyre all correcting the mistakes that they happened back in pennsylvania. Which is good. You know, as i talked about before, pennsylvania was a result of complacency. I think they had done so many of these things, that time and time again you get complacent. And same things with the headquarters and now that you have it again, so soon after, which is shocking. But i think that what youre seeing is all the agencies that were involved have been taking corrective action and doing it the right way this time. Let me ask you to pick up a part of something that was said by the fbi and Secret Service by that Press Conference. I think for some of those viewers we may not be familiar with the integration of these Law Enforcement layers between the Secret Service, fbi, state officials. It was like you said a remarkable success. In their ability to apprehend the suspect 45 miles north of the Golf Course. But talk to us about how that integration works from the moment that there is a threat and a suspect identified to the fact that he was apprehended and ultimately brought back to the scene of the crime. What We Saw was a break down of that in pennsylvania. In this case though, maralago he was president for four years. Hes been former president for three years. Theyve been working together for about eight years on all kinds of incidents like this. Concerning his safety and going back and forth. So one the locals are very used to working together. Both the county, the city, the state and the federal. So you have people that are familiar with each other. Then you have the place, you have the fact that this has happened recently. I guarantee the fact that the Advance Agent whos one hole ahead as soon as he saw that barrel. What went through his, through his Thought Process was holy cow another pennsylvania. And he took a shot. I dont know if he would have taken a shot that quick if Pennsylvania Hadn T happened. Its just a mentality when youre out there and what youre thinking. I think before he would have thought is that a Rifle Barrel and kind of a little more investigation. I think this, this matter having been so recent has done that. Now when you look at the Law Enforcement response, they were on the same radio frequency. They heard shots fired. They immediately got on it. Got a witness. Got a picture. Put that into the data base. License Plate Reader finds it. Everything Work Ld worked out in the way it should. Were talking about before 9 11. Agencies didnt talk to each other. These things come about because of things that happen. They identified four different teams involved. He called on the fbi saying there was an Investigation Team President , an Evidence Team that is president. Walk us through what theyre going through right now in the immediate aftermath in their different capacities because we also heard from the local Law Enforcement sheriff says the threat to the public was no longer there. That tomorrow youre going to be able to go to the postoffice. Youre going to be able to maintain open treats as much as they can. How is that going to be impacted by the work these different response teams have to under take in these immediate hours. These critical hours. So the fbi has lots of personnel. Miami office. My first office back in the mid to late 90s. So the fbi can throw resources out. So the evidence response team, they have totally walled off that area around the Golf Course. Theyre bringing in all the agents around miami, West Palm Beach. All the different ras have Walk Inch by inch to make sure they cover all the evidence. The bomb team, they know theyre going to get caught or theyre going to get killed and they leave, iud improvised explosive devices in their vehicles or places they live because they know theyre going to go investigate them. So everything they have, theyre going to look first for iuds to make sure the agents that are going to go do the Evidence Recovery is safe. They come in with all their trailers and comps packages. They have secret systems that theyre going to be communicating with. Then the tactical side is just in case. So they have tactical guys, s. W. A. T. Team on stand by working with the Sheriffs Office and the Secret Service should a lead come up. Putting pointing to someone else or anything. So thats the one thing that the fbi can really throw at it is manpower. Its a lot bigger than the Secret Service. The Secret Service is small. Im sure theres a bunch of flights coming down from washington, d. C. For other resources for all the agencies down here. Does the fact that the suspect attempted to flee the shooting or the scene of the shooting reveal anything about his profile. You compared it or you mentioned the shooter in Butler Pennsylvania immediately taken out by the Secret Service sharp shooters. The fact this individual and we should note again in the Press Conference. They found Ceramic Tiles in the bag that were on the fence. It could suggest that he was perhaps having a kevlar vest or was perhaps willing to be in a shoot out with Law Enforcement the fact he fled the scene. Managed to get in a car and get away does that reveal anything to you about his profile. I see two things that he wanted to live and maybe get another chance to do this. He set up and, in his mind, same with the active shooters, they have a vision of how this is going to go. And part of it may be, that he does weigh, like hes going to shoot the president and then hes going to two down in a Blaze Of Glory which some of them think. And then, this secret Service Agent sees him, and disrupts it. It might have thrown off that vision of him accomplishing the mission and then dying or she just thought he could get away with it and get away. So the shot that rang out. Alerted him. He was seen and he ran. Hes either thinking i need to go back and try this again. Or he wanted to live in the long run. Its going to take for him to come in and theyre going to interview him. Maybe theres some notes in Hiss House or something that will reveal that. But he definitely if he ran he wanted to live. He department he didnt want to go down in a confrontation of suicide by Cop Or Anything like that. Or he didnt get his objective and he wanted to try it again. We appreciate your expertise rob. Joining us now is cam delaney. The investigators are going to try to answer the same questions we have. Who is this guy. What was he doing there. Similar to the Butler Investigation and that shooter. Theyre going to have canvassing every aspect of this shooters life. Right now theyre going through a digital trail. And trying to determine everything that they can find. Were trying to confirm exactly which particulars apply to him. And the fbi is going to go through all of that information. Theyre going to interview, friends, relatives, associates. Go through his employment history. His digital footprint. Messages people, theyre going to get Search Warrants and go through every device he was using to try to figure out what his movements were. What inspired him, what his ideology was. Thats where the investigation goes from here. Cam, can you talk about the significance the head of the Secret Service heading down to the scene. Is that something that would be standard Operating Procedure given the situation that were in . It might be, but it certainly reflects a situation where this is the second attempted assassination of the former president in a short period of time. There are going to be questions raised about the security. You heard during the local Law Enforcement news conference, the county Palm Beach sheriff. That the former president does not have the same security that he did while he was president. When he was president the whole Golf Course was going to be shut down. As it happens the Secret Service has appeared to have done everything correctly. According to the Law Officials who thwarted this from happening. As they were clearing the Golf Course ahead of mr. Trump. The Secret Service is under a microscope right now. The current director wants to come down and see what happened. What the procedure was. Theres going to be questions asked. Theres going to be congressional hearing. First there was an iranian plot to kill mr. Trump. Then there was the Butler County Shooting now theres this. Members of congress are responding to todays apparent Assassination Attempt against Donald Trump at his Golf Club in West Palm Beach florida. Gallego posted this. Saying Quote Violence has no place in our democracy. The recent gunshots fired against Donald Trump are unacceptable and disturbing i condemn this attack in every possible term. And joining us now melanie, reporter for punch bowl. What are we hearing from Members Of Congress to the news of this second Assassination Attempt against Donald Trump. Yeah the congressional reaction is pouring in. We already heard from Chuck Schumer the democratic leader of the senate. He has said he has already been briefed by the acting secret Service Director. He also condemned all forms of political violence. The Secret Service has already been in the microscope on Capitol Hill. Because as you recall after that first Assassination Attempt, they actually created in house a bipartisan Task Force to investigate the incident. To investigate the security failures. There was a congressional hearing which led to the resignation of the former head of the Secret Service. Now this Task Force is making clear that theyre going to add this to their plate. They said they requested a briefing from the Secret Service as well. They said theyre going to request this incident. I suspect the Security Protocol or lack there of are going to be a key area of focus for them. Look the officials said today at that Press Conference that the perimeter around the Golf Kous was course was not secured in the same way as if he were president. But theres already some calls in the Republican Party about why Trump Isnt currently receiving the same protections that are afforded to current president s especially given that there was already an Assassination Attempt. All of those things are going to come into focus over the next few weeks while congress is in session. Im told this Task Force was already planning to have a hearing next week to start showing some of their findings so theyre probably going to want to speed up. And look that doesnt mean that theres not going to be some people who try to politicize this for their own gain, right. But i think at the end of the day the people who are especially on this committee are very serious operators. They didnt want your Marjory Taylor greens who are going to be running out there and running to the cameras to show boat or for campaign raising purposes. I think theyre going to look very seriously at this. It is very rare to find bipartisan committeeship actually functioning properly. Is there a pledge to hold public hearings both not only into what has happened in butler, pennsylvania and surrounding todays Assassination Attempt. And they do have to put out a report by December 13th i believe. That was in the resolution is they have to release a report by then. It can include legislative recommendations. And so theyre going to have to move pretty quickly here and not let president ial politics and the Election Year get in the way of all of that. So all the entities involved in deciding on where this case goes. If it moves on the federal side which is what i think it will do. All of the pieces of information are going to be put together so that the prosecution of him as it moves forward can be done in a proper fashion with probable cause. Search warrants, dotting their is and crossing their ts to make sure nothing goes wrong in the investigation. As we try to compile the information, you bring an interesting point about the Military History if he was involved in the military. If he has any kind of training. Given the fact that police have come out or local Law Enforcement has come out was about 500 to 600 yards away from the former president in the Golf Course. That he was spotted by the secret Service Agent who saw the barrel i guess peaking through the fence. And thats what led the Secret Service to engage him. That theyre very capable of pulling a lot of things. We saw in butler, pennsylvania what an 18yearold was able to pull off. This is almost a 60yearold man. Does he have the background to be ready to pull that trigger at a 500 or 600yard level with the experience he may have gotten in the military. Is he a member of the Gun Club or does he hunt in long ranges. Were still very early on here a lot of speculation but he obviously knew where to be. And when to be there with respect to attempting to pull this Assassination Attempt off on former President Trump today. Mr. Mcdonald. One real quick last question. If theres one thing that should change in terms of the protection of a protectee as the former president. What should we see now that were seeing a second Assassination Attempt against mr. Trump. I think youre going to see more security services. Theres a number of personnel and Drone Type capabilities that can be utilized. I think the fact that the Acting Director is on his way to florida right now shows that at least hes trying to allow for the buck to stop with him.
