Tonight the contrast between the democratic and republican candidates for President Couldnt be starker. Today on earth one, Vice President harris spoke at a Campaignen Reception here in washington. Her Running Mate Governor tim Walz Waste in the Swing State o wisconsin, making his pitch to voters. You know, the normal things you would expect from a serious president Ial Campaign. Yet, over on earth two, Donald Trump and his running mate, senator j. D. Invance, who were also campaigning today, are still falsely claiming that haitian immigrants are eating pets in springfield, ohio, and dont care about the Pain And Chaos its causing. I mean, everyone about this is insane, but its an ugly and very serious turn in a campaign that promises to get uglier still. Watching all of this happen, i Cant Help but think of another racially fraught moment in president ial politics. In 2008 smack in the middle of then Senator Barack obamas quest for the democratic president ial nomination, a recording surfaced of the reverend Jeremiah Wright where he said, quote, no, no, no, not god bless america, god damn america. A Fire Storm ensued because obama and his wife were married by him, had their daughters baptized by him. Obama stopped going to his church and was compelled to Deliverll One Of The Best Speecs In American Politics and the best speech ever on race. Obama did all of this to save his Highflying Campaign from crashing to the ground, a campaign that led him to become the first black person elected President Of The United States. My how things have changed. Today a former president whos the current republican nominee for president is saying this about haitian immigrants who settled in springfield, ohio, legally under temporary protectedmp status. In springfield theyre eating the dogs, the people that came in, theyre eating the cats. Theyre eating theyre eating ther pets of the people that le there. This is a reprehensible lie. This is racist. This is xenophobic. Its being met with a shameful silence from republicans. The insistence that the lies stop from the mayor of Springfieldyo Hasnt moved them nor have the Bomb Threats, or the School Evacuations or the fears of theat embattled haitia community. When trump was asked about it yesterday in los angeles, he doubled down and said that his longpromised Mass Deportation in american history would start in springfield. Explain why trump is woefully lying, Greg Sergeant wrote, its an open assertion to lie about immigrants as a prelude to the bloody removal of millions. Those polls show a stubborn and frightening reality, despite his reprehensible lies about springfield and other issues, nearly half the country is buying what hes selling. Jonathan, its really disappointing that the hatred that Donald Trump seems to show on Aem Daily Basis is being normalized. Unfortunately were not surprised when he says outlandish things. My heart goes out to that community. I read a Story Today about the woman who posted something on Facebook And Shepo apparently i mortified that its taken on a life of its own. Its a reminder for all of us that we have to be careful when we stereotype, when we make assumptions, when we post things because theres so many waiting to capitalize on this hatred and the thought that this man is poling Neck And Neck with Vice President Kamala Harris should be a Itwakeup Call to us all. Even with the hatred that hes spewing, this is still a tight race. Igright, and i mentioned tha in my opening comments. Its just sort of stunning to me that given everything that we know and that weve seen, especially oute of that debate that this race is essentially tied. You know Whats Something else that i find startling, madam mayor, the silence from the republican party over this. One way to stop this is for responsible leaders to step forward and say this is wrong, this is not right, this isnt who we are. Lets move on. Theyre not doing it. Why dont you think theyre doing it . You know, i think thats a questionnk we all find ourselve asking because they walk amongst us. We have coworkers, neighbors, registered republicans and yet they dont see the danger that Donald Trump is to this country. We have to ask ourselves what is it that we are missing . I can tell you. We cant make assumptions about who supports Donald Trump. Ive sat in the Hair Salon and heard my Hair Stylist say he wasnt that bad. I heard people in my community say, you know, i dont know who im goingno to vote for. I think what he has done i always say a broken clock is right twice a day. Hes been speaking to people, especially via Social Media for the past four years. He in many ways has capitalized on being this Marketing Genius and he has normalized his behavior. Hes made people feel so disappointed in politics in general that they are willing to stay home. So we cant put it all in the laps of republicans. We got to make sure that we are turning out our base, that we are reminding people what a danger this man was to our country and what a danger hes already told us he will be if reelected. To your point about Donald Trumps speaking to people, one thing that i found very interesting it was brought to my attention. Its why i reached out to you. Your son, your black young son has been getting mail from the Donald Trump campaign, several pieces of mail sometimes in one day, we see them here on the screen,on basically asking asking him for his vote. What do you think Donald Trump do you think this these mailers will have any impact on your son or on your sons friends . Well, thankfully my son doesnt check the mail. I do. What it does say to me is that Donald Trumps i not taking anye for granted. It was my son who told me two and a half years ago that the democratic party had a problem with young African American men. This was before it was showing up in the polling. When heth tells me we have a problem, i now listen. What it says to me is not only has he been flooding his Social Media feed, hes been flooding a lot of peoples Social Media feeds because ive asked other people who Havesk Children Arou the same age as mine, are they getting these mailers . Are their kids getting targeted on Social Media . Ng The Answer is yes. Hes flooding their Social Media feeds. Hes sendingci it in the mailbo. Again, hes normalizing his behavior. What i would say to anyone who cares about this country, not to take for granted that just because someoneed looks like yo because someone lives like you that Donald Trump is not talking totr them, that hes not tryingo sway them. What iot say to my son is, evenf you are so disgusted that you stay home and dont vote, thats still a win for Donald Trump. Then republicans were also against it. Can you talk about what is going on on Capitol Hill and will we end up with a Government Shutdown . I dont think we will because its in no Ones Interest Tose that. We only have two weeks left in this session before the election and a shutdown would be devastating to republican prospects, and they know that. I do think what youre witnessing at the president ial level and in the halls of congress is the deliberate demonizatione of immigrant populations for political gain. It is hate mongering, fearmongering. Its a sad old playbook in american history and its counter productive in terms of our needs. Why iss Speaker Johnson goi along with this . By pushing the Save Act and other things, i mean, hes helping to perpetuate this. I hope youre right that there isnt going to be a Government Shutdown, but what responsibility does Speaker Johnson have in all of this and what you were just saying . I think he has a large responsibility in terms of moral leadership. I think hes failing that. Hes pandering to the far right elements of his own party to save his own neck. Remember, it was over the issue of a clean Funding Bill for the government that toppled kevin mccarthy. Mike johnsond learned from tha. Pandering to the right might save his neck. He has to face his own caucus to get reelected as speaker when we return in november or december. N assuming republicans hold E Majority to be speaker. Lets switch gears on something else involving the speaker. In response to the department of Homeland Security designating the January 6th certification of the president ial results, a national special security event. The speaker said, quote, it sounds like politics to me. Lets keep in mind, as you well know, he was an architect of correct me if im wrong the stop the steal movement in the capitol. Sounds like politics to me . He actually litigated the whole issue of the certification and the legitimacy of President Bidens clear win four years ago. I think Thats Rhetoric that is very dangerous. I was on the floor of the house on January 6th. I saw that crowd. I was there minutes before Ashley Babbitt was shot trying to getho into the house floor. It was a very, very grave and dangerous moment. For him to play politics with that is just, to me, reprehensible. Shame on him. You are a member of the house foreign affairs committee. A Big Thing happened yesterday that hasnt got a whole lot of attention. Thats the new british Prime Minister had a meeting with President Biden where the Agenda Iteme Number one was ukraine. Front Page Story of the New York Times was about how ukraine wants the united states to grant permission to use longer range missiles to attack inside russia. The british want to do it. Europeans want to do it. The british pm came to washington to meet with the president to say can you say this is good . Can you give us any update, any intel on how that meeting went and how close the biden administration is to saying to thes british, give them your weapons and thenem saying, american weapons can be used too . I think youre absolutely right. This was a very important meeting that got overlooked. Its the first sitdown with the new british government and our government. Springfield was this beautiful town and now theyre going through hell. That was Donald Trump just moments ago refusing to denounce the Bomb Threats in springfield, ohio, that followed his spreading the reprehensible lie that haitian immigrants are stealing and eating pets. Today voters in florida rallied in support of womens reproductive rights and protested against the states sixweek abortion ban. It comes at Governor Ron Desantis is under fire for allegedly trying to intimidate voters over a Ballot Initiative that would protect access. Police are making house visits to question residents who signed a petition to put the amendment on the november ballot, known as amendment four. It would legalize the procedure until the fetus is deemed viable by a health care provider. Desantis said the state is concerned about fraudulent petitions. One person said the investigation was disturbing and felt like an overreach. The advocacy group, floridians protecting freedom, has signed a lawsuit to shut down the initiative. Theyre accusing them of Tax Payer funding a political ad. Joining me now is anna hochkammer, Executive Director of the womens Freedom Coalition. Thank you for coming on the Saturday Show. What do you make of this investigation by the state where police are showing up at voters homes who are supporting amendment four or signed the petition . Is this Voter Intimidation . Jonathan, this is par for the course for this group of extremists. They will not stop. They started a couple years ago. They started removing elected officials in florida who refused to enforce laws the way the extremists in tallahassee wanted. They created this office of election supervision. They started sending Law Enforcement officers to peoples doors. This after the Florida Supreme Court was stacked against us, after all kinds of shenanigans were happening with the financial impact statement. They will not stop. Now theyre engaging in Voter Intimidation and theyre doing it at the cost of 4 Million women and girls of reproductive age who live in this state, real people who are suffering while they play their political games. Do you think what are the prospects of the Amendment Passing . Every time the issue has been put on the ballot in a state like Ruby Red kansas, it has passed. Will florida join that club of states that have passed amendments that protect reproductive rights . This is ours to win. I just saw a poll that said amendment four has 76 support. Even though we have a 60 threshold to amend the constitution in florida when you have 76 of trump supporters supporting amendment four and a whopping 97 of democrats in the state supporting amendment four, its clear these are just extremists who are so out of touch they will stop at nothing to keep the voters from the state of florida living under laws they consider just, dignified and fair. The percentages of support you cited are spectacular, which probably has a lot of people at home wondering, will that have an impact on the president ial race . Will that make it possible for, oh, my god, Vice President harris to carry florida or would that be going too far . I think this is going to have an impact down ballot, not necessarily at the top of the ticket. Lets be honest martians could invade tomorrow and we could all see florida flip. Its entirely possible in this state of the game. There are down Ballot Races from the Senate Race on down that will see the drive to get into the Ballot Box to vote on amendment four. We have less than a minute left. There was primary votes in florida last month. Was there was there a sign in the turnout in places that says to you that the terrain in november might be better for democrats and certainly for the Ballot Initiative than people might expect . In my own city im a location elected official in a suburb of miami. I saw unprecedented democratic turnout in my own city. 56 of the votes that were cast were cast by mail. Please, please, everybody should know that in florida around october 1st, vote by mail ballots will hit peoples mailboxes. Well see highly motivated democrats, npas, independents in florida, women and young people filling out those vote by mail ballots like never before. This race will be over before november. Well, i want to make clear that Reagan And Trump are very different political and personality types. As Liz Cheney suggested, there are huge differences between Ronald Reagan who was pro trade, pro immigration, pro nato, antirussia, vastly different from trump. Nevertheless there are some historical consistencies that led us to the current situation with republicans embracing the maga movement. Part of it was the fact that reagan indulged in white backlash politics throughout his career even though he did it less crudely than trump. He spent years talking about Law And Order and welfare queens. As you referenced, in 1980 he used that Code Phrase states rights, which was southern slang for saying we oppose civil rights. He used that phrase at the County Fair. As president he opposed the Martin Luther King holiday. He called out Human Rights Violations in the soviet union, but overlooked the violations in South Africa and vetoes a tough Sanctions Bill on South Africa. I think reagan was still in many way as great president , but we have to grapple with his record honestly and understand when it came to civil rights he had a poor record, but on immigration he had a positive record, unlike trump. As you also write, reagan had a dark side. He was willing to tap into dangerous, disreputable prejudices to win the presidency, while insisting to everyone that his intentions were pure. I think the Big Thing, jonathan, is while reagan could be ideological while opposing civil rights, he had a pragmatic streak. As governor and as president , he was able to pivot to the center and do deals with democrats in Sacramento And Washington and work with gorbachev and he put his ideology aside and work with democrats. Thats whats different than trump. You cant imagine trump pivoting to the center, but thats what Ronald Reagan did. The name of the book is reagan his life and legend. Why do you think republicans arent leaping to microphones to denounce him for an obvious lie, but also a racist lie . Thats simple. They cant break rank. They cannot good or bad they have to stand there before fear or whatever it is with somebody that is spreading hate. Even if they dont believe it, theyre like, oh, no, we have to close ranks and put on a United Front even though its false and hate. Its absolutely crazy. He knows that another one will just be the nail in the coffin. Its already a wrap for him. He doesnt want to accept defeat. This is happening. Im not going to say anything else. Everything that she has done in her life has qualified her for this position. I want people to understand when they say she hasnt done anything, check the work. Youre talking about things that are with this information. A lot of people had to apologize for doubting her, for saying things that were false and then you can find out on the web that youre incorrect.
