New swing states horse. She sat down for an interview with a local News Station to make her pitch to undecided voters. The vast majority of us as americans have so much more in common than what separates us. And i also believe that i am accurate in knowing that most americans want a leader who brings us together as americans. Who is trying to have us Pointing Fingers at each other. With 52 days until election day, the pressure is on for the Vice President to both reintroduce herself to persuadable voters and draw a sharp contrast between her Agenda And Donald trump dark vision for america. Joining us now, the publisher of the bulwark and podcasts and serves as Executive Director of republican voters against trump and Tim Miller, msnbc political Analyst And Writer at large at the bulwarks. Welcome to the table, bulwarks. What do you think of the term undecided voter . Especially in this moment . Look, i know a lot of people think undecided voters are real but there are a couple types of undecided voters. I talked to them a lot. They are the ones who are just kind of starting to tune in to politics but i think it is hard for political observers, political obsessives, People Like Us honestly to understand who are these people who are not paying attention to this . But some of the people are called low information voters. I like to call them people who are living their lives and i think thats okay. So, those people are showing up and saying, all right. What do we have here . Then there are other people who genuinely, you know, are not partisan and are rightleaning independents, soft gop voters who do not like trump. They know they will not vote for trump but are trying to figure out if they can get there on harris. I talked to a lot of those voters. This last group, i want people to think about undecided about is this way. People who are undecided about whether they will show up, you know, that is important. You motivate people to get off the couch and go vote because there is a lot of people who are like, this is a matter, and youve got to make them decide to go out there. So, that is who they are that Turn Election that you have to turn out people to the polls. I want to play some sound from your Focus Group wednesday after the debate and these are three voters from the longwell Focus Group. A lot of the things that trump was , you know, criticizing and exploiting Joe Biden four, now hes The Old Man that cant keep up. I think she was the clear winner. She was more president ial. He did a poor job of taking her baIt Allowing himself to get upset. She addressed most of the issues pretty well and she gave Donald Trump like what may be other candidates couldnt. You know, she was a little bit sarcastic and talking back with him. The voters have thoughts. I mean, The Sound was from three Swing Voters from a Focus Group you did after the debate. Youve featured these voices on the podcast this upcoming week. I mean, there are people you still jacked up this is why we had Chairman Harrison here. And some of these other voters because you cannot expect people to show up to the pulpit this was a group, we call them flippers. But if people who voted for trump and then Joe Biden in 2020. That is a group that was eroded when Joe Biden was a candidate and they had been an interesting group to watch after the switch. To see whether or not these voters, these tend to be center right, can they get there on harris . This group in particular, there were a number of interesting things for bottom line, they all thought Vice PresidentKamala Harris swept the floor with Donald Trump but that wasnt as interesting as the way they described her performance which was the number one word that these voters use about her performance. She seemed president ial. I think for a lot of these voters, getting them over that of saying, no, she looks like somebody who could be president and sounds like she can be present. I think that is a think she differ herself during the debate. What do you make of all of this independent undecided Voter Space that is out there particularly in the face of what the New York Times reported on thursday, quote, although it was billed as an Event Focus on housing and the economy, he dumped he spent much of the meandering speech on thursday in tucson, arizona, venting His Grievances over his debate against Vice PresidentKamala Harris. You have one president ial candidate trying to level up policy which you and i can debate just how good or bad that is, but another one who is talking about Crowd Size and the fact that he got bested by his opponent in the debate. How are people still undecided in your view . Yeah, thats a good question. Can i say, you all look so good this morning. I thought it was a Saturday Morning kind of casual buy. I know. Look, i think some people for the undecided thing, i get it. This is i get my people are doing it. How can you be undecided . To put a finer point on it, as soon as you think when you hear undecided that their decidedly treating trump and harris, i just cant pick. Chicken or fish . What do i want for dinner . That is not really the person. It is a person who has disqualified one of the candidates and is trying to decide if they can get there on the other candidate. I think if you think about it in the frame it makes more sense. Its like, i young voter trying to decide if they can both harris and they had concerns about basel or whatever it is these folks we talk a lot about at the bulwark. Theyve been republican all their life and voted for trump once and now are trying to decide what to do. I think that makes more sense. Its not a close call for us. When you think of it in that frame and understand what the Harris Campaign needs to do to reach out to these voters for the good news is shes trying. If you listen to her Debate Performance and on the stump Last Night, her message is squarely aimed at motivating these core democratic voters and reaching out to traditional centerright voters that dont like Donald Trump. Thats in her messaging. But trump , on thursdays rally, his rally Last Night was even crazier. Back the snake and is reading the snake poem. The dude is unhinged and he doesnt seem to be focused at all to reach out to these core groups. You wonder what is going on stage is It A i want you to take a listen to something that Vice PresidentKamala Harris sat on the trail about concepts of a plan. This was yesterday in pennsylvania. Remember when he was president . He tried 60 times to end the affordable Care Act and he said in the debate just this week, he has no plan to replace it. He said he has, quote, concepts of a plan. Concepts of a plan. No actual plan. So, lets just think about this for a moment hes threatened Health Insurance for the 45 Million people who rely on it based on a concept. How do you balance rhetorically, sarah longwell, the fact that he is vague on some Policy Details at the same time he has project 2025 ready and raring to go. Alongside him. Let me say, that isnt the only Focus Group that we did. We also did twotime trump voters who were kind of feeling down on trump. One of the things that was interesting, its always interesting when you listen voters on what breakthrough and what they notice. This idea of concepts of a plan was something a lot of those voters were repeating back to the moderator said, what is he talking about . I think that is for people who are frustrated with trump, he did nothing in that debate to bring them back. He also has been sort of have voters who have been with him before but are not moving away from him and i think it is interesting to pick Healthcare And Fighting just as a forget any debate about the policy of it, as a sheer Public Opinion play. Like they lost this fight. People do care a great deal about what candidates plan for healthcare is and want to know how they are going to get better care and more affordable care, but Donald Trump having nothing to say about that is the kind of thing that voters notice. Theres only a full of policies that voters can really animated about another and healthcare is one of them. Sarah, kim, you are both sticking with us for more republicans are endorsing Vice PresidentKamala Harris. That is next on The Weekend. Because when you trust us to pack It And ship it, we guarantee, so itll get into the hands of your customers safely. Which is why were the Stand By Work Guaranteed store. Switch Today Harris Walz campaign and another announces support for harris in an oped writing, power is intoxicating and based on trumps rhetoric and conduct It Appears unlikely that he would respect the power of the presidency in all instances and rather abusive for personal and political gain and not on behalf of of the american people. Sarah longwell and Tim Miller are back with us. Tim, first of all, i would like wow. Everyone is like, not everybody because people keep saying where is former president bush. I dont know if we will see anything from him but it seems like a lot of republicans who had previously not publicly said that they will vote against Donald Trump for Kamala Harris and will go on the record written down in spaces and places where people can see it because they think it is important. Yeah. I understand a lot of democrats like you will be disoriented by The Bush character. Were bringing them all back and everybody will be good for,. I think the reality is it is important for the reason we talked about in the first segment. Think about the type of voters who are persuadable. If the one group is warmer republicans who dont like Donald Trump but werent sure about the Vice President , it is helpful to have prominent former republicans or current republican saying, no, its good enough. She passes the presence of bark and he doesnt. Its time to move on. We are not going back. Its unexpected people like that and the cheney. I think it is good in that sense and i think its a sign of her debate victory. There was this period in june that sarah was working on and recruiting these types of people to come forward and its tough. When trump was winning by three points, four points in the polls, some of these people were cowards. People score it was hard to get a former republican office i like but i think that Debate Performance is making that easier. Tim, you walked me right where i wanted to go in terms of how the numbers are shaping up and what that may say and for more republicans to come out. A number of us still inside the party have been trying to create that Permission Structure. This national polling and this is important, focus, because you know how we feel about national polling at the table. These are likely voters, not registered voters. I have a high propensity to vote in elections. Kamala harris is at 50 , trump is a 45. This was completed the day after the debate. The Trend Lines are there. It doesnt, you know, take away from the work. We were talking about that Dnc Chairman and for that Permission Structure, with you and others, talk about it of rightofway thing, hey, folks, you need to take a fresh look because of what is so bad on the other side. Maybe this will help. How do numbers like this and having the Attorney General Gonzales and Dick Cheney and others helped fuel the kind of energy . People like to be on the side of a winner. I know you wish all of this was about the principle and it is for some of us. But for some people this is practical. Some of the people on the sidelines, its less about Policy And Principle as it is about hassle. If i, if i come out for harris, i know i will get negative feedback and i spoke to one of the 200 republicans on that letter that the Vice President mentioned at the debate and she said she got a Phone Call from a Cabinet Official in The Bush white house to is unhappy that she put her name on the list for there are still some of these folks still in Maga World who have friends in their life and its a hassle to do it. If she is winning and performing well on the Debate Stage and there is momentum, that hassle seems worth it. Right . To come out and say i want to do the right thing and put My Name on a piece of paper. I think it matters in that sense if we dont always trust them. Sir, i am curious, when you are sitting in these Focus Groups, do you get the sense that these Endorsements Matter to these folks . Yeah, i do. Although, first of all, in the Focus Groups in particular, they talked about Kamala Harris mentioning she had the endorsements 200 republicans. That is something they have their heirs up for. They like the idea of republicans endorsing Kamala Harris and it makes them feel better about it. I also agree with tim. For a lot of these, these healthy but low information voters, something like, im sorry, Dick Cheney has endorsed Kamala Harris . That make them say, what is wrong with Donald Trump that all these republicans want endorsing . I will say, first of all, we still have far too few of these republicans who have come out considering what they know and what they seen especially the Cabinet Officials who surrounded trump. I would like to see, you know, General Kelly who was his Chief Of Staff and speaks on and especially up the record, i would like to see more of them come out that i want to add one thing to this Polling Question and why it is so important. Donald trump makes it clear that he is going to seek retribution on his enemies and when you speak out, people in republican circles no more than anybody else there is often a price to pay for a social price, a potentially price in terms of your profession and how much you can operate in republican world going forward. But also, it invites a sort of scary Element And Trump intimidates people with this for that is why you dont want there to be a collective Action Problem every time a new republican comes out, it creates a Permission Structure not just for voters for another big Name Republican to say something. Theyve got to do that because it is the right thing to do and be in totality. It may not be there single voice but an aggregate those voices matter a great deal and its good for the soul. I mean, if there was a democrat trying to be a Baby Dictator on Day One, i would hope the masses would be calling for wellmeaning democrats to stand up and speak again separate Tim Miller, sarah longwell, thank you for your time and insight for next week, The View from two battleground states. The Party Chair of Nevada And Pennsylvania will join us at the table. You are watching The Weekend. Wait for insurance to approve a test or approve a medication. We didnt have to worry about any of those things thanks to the donations. And our family is forever grateful because its completely changed our lives. Ok limu you set it, and as i spike it, ill tell them how Liberty Mutual Customizes car insurance, so they only pay for what they need. Got it . [squawks] did you get that . Only pay for what you need. Liberty, liberty, liberty, liberty. voltaren. For long lasting arthritis pain relief. im loving this. Its great to look in to the table. Chairman, i want to start with you. You have the Vice President explaining a little bit more detailed and her economic agenda and how she wants to lay that out during an interview with the local Pennsylvania Station yesterday. I want to play more of what she said talking about her opportunity economy plan. Our Small Businesses are so much a part of the fabric of our communities not to mention, i think, the backbone of americas the economy. Giving startups a 50,000 Tax Deduction to start their Small Business. It used to be 5000. Nobody can start a Small Business with 5000 but investing in peoples innovative ideas and giving them the ability to go for it. This was an interview that she did with Brian Tapp on Abc 6 in philadelphia. What the Vice President say here aligned with what your constituents are saying they are looking for . That they need . And how does that translate for them relative to what Donald Trump is saying as we heard there in that clip. Im going to give you this opportunity without really clearly defining what the opportunity is. I will tell you, it does. One, when Donald Trump was president , his ppp program, 95 of black and brown businesses were rejected. We in pennsylvania at the State Level received money from the bite Affairs Administration and can create a program with 125 Million to barber shops, Beauty Salons and neighborhood businesses, the kind of businesses that regular people are concerned about. You hear folks wanting to talk about how do you start a business . How do you create generational wealth i think it speaks to people in pennsylvania from pill throughout the commonwealth are thinking about. Its interesting to me because one of the things we know about nevada voters is they are notoriously important impossible to pull and are like deciders. I guess you have a better read on what is happening in nevada impulses across the country. What will it take to get them over the Finish Line for Kamala Harris . You know what, i just recently finished a statewide tour going to every county within our state. We called it our Kitchen Table tour. Talking to voters, not just democratic voters, but republican voters, independent voters statewide. It didnt matter what county i was in. The voters have the same concerns and issues but what they appreciated as i was there with my team. Not just you talk to them but listen to them. Just what my colleague was saying, but Vice PresidentKamala Harris essay, The Vision she has about Moving America Forward and what that Biden Harris Team has done, resonates very there was a gentleman i met with and he was in his work clothes dirty and i asked if he just got off the job and he goes, yes i am a i said are you democrat or republican and hes a republican and he said, i know you hate my party and i said i dont hate your party. Created that project in our state and i am in red rural nevada. And i have, do you have children you say, yes, i do. Did you do Backtoschool Shopping and do you own a home . Can you pay your mortgage and do that Backtoschool Shopping because of the money that came in through the Infrastructure Bill and because of the democratic majority that was in your state legislator. I chair the democratic party but we are here to represent everyone. What the Vice President is saying is resonating throughout our state. This is so interesting because it is not just and we talk a lot about the president ial and, yes, it is down ballot and it is a house in the Senate But State legislatures is where the policies are made across the country. In recent years, this democratic Party Apparatus has had a little Laser Focus on giving States MoneyJaime Harrison talked about the money they were able to give out. I got cash from the dnc trying to the money the Harris Walz Campaign has rate. The Boonton State legislative races have also been important and you are key partners in this agenda. If Vice PresidentKamala Harris is elected, many of the things you all, just as you said, will have to be partners in implementation. Absolutely. The advancements we made in lifecycle are lower thus to put the house for the first time in decades. We are at a point where we could potentially flip the State Senate and in print up pennsylvania would have a democratic Governor And Control both chambers of the legislature. For us is unprecedented. What that would mean is to make investments in community and a womans right to choose and so many issues for people not the least of which is gun violence. That would be huge rest. I want to go back to something you said. It went by quickly and it was somewhat subtle with what the gentleman said to you about, i know you hate my party. Speak to this idea that right now what is animating a lot of our politics is this idea that because you stand on the opposite side of where i am politically, you hate me and i have been told i should hate you. Or i been told you hate me. Help us understand how what Vice PresidentKamala Harris is saying and bringing to the conversation flips the script a little bit on that and probably that gentleman when you look at him and said, no, i dont hate you. I barely know you. My what i hate you . So, what does that tell you about what is going on out there beyond the policies and things that will be very, very important, obviously . There is this granular thing that speaks to us as individuals. It is. I tell people i was elected to be the chair of the nevada necrotic party, not to build the party but to build community. What i do is i am in my community 24 7. We have seen Kamala Harris in our state often. Talking to people and letting them know she cares about them. Not just the policy, that her policies will be there to help the families address the needs of their family. It is my responsibility at the state Party Chair to go to those communities and talked all the voters and resonate that, yes, we have a democratic majority in our house and a majority in the senate, and we are a womens majority and the only limits majority in the country. The policies we have been able to address are those Kitchen Table policies. Having at the table changes a conversation drastically. But it is not just about republicans or democrats. Its about having a leader that speaks to the issues that matter to your family. They see that in Kamala Harris and we see that during the biden harris administration. A president that has a heart and cares about everyone. Yes, he is a democratic president , but he cares about everyone and it is our responsibility to make sure we carry that message all the way down. You cant say that about Donald Trump. I dont think he cares about everyone. He dont care about anyone. He cares about one person. Thank you both for being at the table this morning. Really appreciate it. Also neff, a big announcement from the Harris Campaign. My little miracle is beckett. A Thousand Years by Christina Perri i have died every day waiting for you we wouldnt be where we are without saint jude. And in turn, we wouldnt be where we are without those people that have donated. our right to reproductive Health Care is being stolen from us. Go online, call, or scan this code, with your 19 monthly gift. And well send you this care. No matter what tshirt. It is your right to have safe Health Care. Thats it. Go online, call, or scan right now. The Harris Walz Campaign is kicking off his largest effort yet to reach latino voters and is coinciding with the start of hispanic Heritage Month Blitz involves the spending on spanishlanguage radio and Organizing Push around Boxing Matches and baseball games. It also includes target as including this new one in pennsylvania. The owner of the largest spanishlanguage radio network. In both english and spanish. My name is Victor Martinez and you may wrecking is my voice. I have interviewed many kenneth and they all talk but the differences Kamala Harris listens. So she fought for them. And won. I know she will listen to The Voice of the pennsylvania families and end up two greedy corporations making it hard to afford food and pay the rent. And Kamala Harris and i approve this message. Joining us now are two key members of the Harris Walz Campaign. Media director and senior spokesman kevin nunez. Welcome to your both. I do like the Background Music in the ad. We were grooving. Talk about this investment. We literally all morning, frankly, drilling down and talking about the voters. We talked a lot about persuadable voters and Swing Voters but based democratic voters are persuadable. This is the coordinated effort by the Harris Walz Campaign with the dnc and other entities to make a push to turn out hispanic and latino voters. You are right. Hispanic Heritage Month is a super exciting moment for our community we celebrate the diversity of our community and it is 50 days from the election. Weve got some undecided voters that we can really make an effort with in these last couple weeks to really talk to them. It will be about meeting them where they are. You will see us at Boxing Matches and baseball games. You will see a set mexican Independence Day festivals and we will ramp up these investments in places like radio where we know our community is getting their information. Go ahead. I was going to say, meet latino voters where they are to tell her story. This is deeply personal to me. I know what its like and i came here looking for Freedom And Opportunity and that is where i love that you are making The Weekend bilingual. Thank you for that. This is what we always here for latinos are so complicated you have to speak to them in english and spanish. They have the same concerns as every other american. Lets talk about that ad. There are people who will walk by and are surprised that it wasnt about immigration. No. Thats not the number one issue you hear about this constituency. You are completely right. When you look at the polling on the conversation we are having and are doing bilingual Phone Bags and talking to other people across the movement, what they care about and we share the same value as the Vice President is who is fighting for them and lowering costs and create economic opportunity and who is making the community safer. All of these issues, Kamala Harris is on the right side of them and can talk about these things and we have an awesome opportunity to talk about the contrast. Donald trump is an polar opposition on these basic issues while demonizing us every chance he gets. I want to you talked about coming here to the u. S. With a vision of opportunity and seeking freedom. There was an interesting, i thought, important exchange that occurred between Stephen Miller and who was interviewing him in philadelphia after the debate. I would like you to take a listen to how Stephen Miller was pressed about embracing the numbers, if you will, of a political dictator. The Crime Rate in venezuela is down, i believe, over the last several years where are you dictatorship lets put it this way. If you are a dictator of a poor country with a high Crime Rate, wouldnt you send your criminals our border . That wasnt my question. Are you using the those are maduro numbers. I trust a ruthless dictator were empty for the and send them to our country. Do you trust those numbers . Matt and also, like, he got a little upset because he was pressed because he was spewing propaganda. When you see that and you hear that coming from the other camp, talk, if you could a little bit, personally, about what that says to you and why it is important in the work you are doing not just for members of the latino community for all americans to appreciate what they are hearing what they are seeing in a moment like that and why so many like yourself and your family came here in the first place. Well, first of all, i am venezuelan and, we hear that from trumps advisers and people surrounding him. The Family Separation and people who and trump himself. The situation in venezuela, everyone knows what happened there and hes using is lying. There are no numbers in venezuela. Those are lies and he is basing it on that to attack my community. When i see Venezuelans Night and day its just preposterous. That is to Donald Trump is and its really scary. A guy telling us he wants to be a dictator on Day One and will would lose progress if a guy that is telling us he will separate families again. Thats his legacy. Ripping kids away from their family and putting them in cages. I continue to say, when people show you who they are, you should believe them the first time. I take Donald Trump at Face Value on the things he is saying. One account i want to underline something that alicia pointed out. In poll after poll after poll, whether it is a survey from univision or we are looking at polling from pew, were looking at polling from the top issues for latino and hispanic voters are issues that have to do with the economy. Kitchen table issues for inflation, the cost of living, jobs and the economy, black of housing, healthcare. It seems to me, kevin, that this coordinated push around these economic issues is not as some people might wrongfully assume relegated to Nevada And Arizona and places they think i get only hispanic voters live. This will be in Georgia And Pennsylvania which has a large hispanic and latino population. In key states, north carolina, there are battlegrounds where margins that this community could make a difference. Thats exactly right. When you look at those top voting issues, look at the issues the Vice President is campaigning on. Making sure we are investing in the backbone of our community and all of americas communities. When you look at what they are looking at, it is left political engagement and less Alignment A Party but the values, they are looking for a fighter and a candidate that will deliver and put the gridlock of washington behind them and get things done and that is exactly what the Vice President has a record of doing and exactly polar opposition to what Donald Trump supports. He doesnt care about the middle class. He wants to cut taxes for billionaires. These are things we know that our communities are sick and tired of from politician. Latino voters will account for 14. 7 of the electorate in 2024. That is a new high. It seems this effort could be critical. Thank you both very much. More ahead on The Weekend. They were puppets, not strong people and he welcomed their contempt and told me it would make them turning them into supplicants all that more humiliating. This was 2019 2015 . Donald trump pulled Yawls Card early, republican Party Apparatus. I figured it out. It came true. Look, having been inside a number of those rooms and having worked with some of those folks, you could see how easy they were because once he was able to assess what they value, that was the card he would play. He knew they valued the money that would come and they valued the proximity to power. They were very much afraid of anything going back on them. Once Donald Trump is gone.
