More of the msnbc hosts on the screen. That is our show for tonight. Now it's time for the last word with ali who's in for lawrence. That just made me sad because it was almost all the people on that picture. Almost. You know what the picture is not, forget the picture. What matters is the event and what's going to be airing on television tomorrow. That's true. It was a good event and that was a good line i have to say. That was excellent. You know, i got dressed while watching the show so i decided i would coordinate with you tonight. It's a sea of gray blue. Yes. You have a great night my friend. You got the memo. Have a good weekend. Have a great show. There are 53 days until election day and today was all about reaching out to voters in deep red parts of battleground states. A county which donald trump won 68% of the vote in in the last election. And in wilksberry pennsylvania where donald trump won with 57% of the vote in 2020. That's where kamala harris was today. And she wasn't the only member of the harris walz campaign rallying voters in battleground states. While vice president harris was in pennsylvania today, governor walz was in michigan and wisconsin. Doug emhoff was in one of the trumpiest places in florida. Second congressional district in maine. Donald trump won that district one electoral vote in maine in both 2016 and 2020. Kamala harris is making it a point that she's building pact of republicans, democrats and independents. When i was a prosecutor i never asked are you republican or democrat. I only asked are you okay. I intend to be a president for all americans and focus on investing right now in you the american people and we can chart a new way forward. I'm kamala harris and i approve this message. And that message shouldn't surprise you. Because here is kamala harris responding to a republican voter back in 2019. Could i be unconventional and just say a couple of things to vest a question. Sure. Okay. It's a town hall. So i guess the first two brief things are probably unpopular but a third one is the important one. First and it's important to know, i do disagree with a lot of the things on your platform and others. And i am a republican. However, the third and most important one and the reason i'm saying this is because i sincerely do appreciate your time and efforts coming here and sharing with us your opinions and things that you think, excuse me, think and also that when inevitably the campaign gets nasty, that's not where we believe it should go. So greatly appreciate it. And god bless your evening. I want to thank you for being here. I want to thank you for having an open mind. Listen part of the beauty of our democracy is that we debate, we discuss, we often will disagree but we the same motivation. I know you're here because you love our country and i'm here for the same reason and we may have other different ideas about how we go about expressing that love and loving our country. I know that about you because you're here right now and you had the courage to stand up and say what you say. And that means a lot to me, so thank you. Vice president harris first stop in pennsylvania today was at a john's town coffee shop where she reiterated her message of unity. Seen a lot of the work that i care about is about building community. Right. And there are many ways to do that and to lift people up and one of them is our small businesses. And you know i was sharing with these guys that, someone who was like a second mother to us was a small business owner. So from childhood, i've been acutely aware of who you guys are. Right. And you're creating a space that is a safe place where people are welcomed and know they're encouraged to be with each other and feel a sense of belonging. And in the midst of so many forces that are trying to make people feel alone or divide, divide us. I think it's really important that we're intentional. About creating these kinds of spaces. Meanwhile, tim walz addressed supporters on the michigan state university campus in east lansing michigan. Here's something every three days to make an impact that will last generations. 53 days that i can assure you the rest of the world are setting [bleep ] on fire. One candidate is talking about eating dogs and another is talking about how to make housing more affordable. Walz was talking about a statement by trump that immigrants are eating dogs which we will bring up later once you clear your pets out of the room. This summer hundreds of kamala harris supporters in golf carts held a rally for the vice president so doug emhoff went to say hello to them. The only thing she's going to ask me about was, you saw the golf carts at the villages. And to make the case against donald trump in his backyard which is actually become more competitive than expected. Kept walking, kept walking. Goodbye. It's like he never shook a woman's hand before. And she just walked right up to him. And she said, hi, i'm kamala harris. He hated that. It reminds me of one of her big rallies a few weeks ago, you remember the one where she said, if you've got something to say, say it to my face. Well, donald trump finally had his chance. All these, all the crap he's been spewing at her all these months. She's right there. Just look over and say it to her face. He did not look at her once. He did not have the courage to look at her even one time. Oh i'm going to get to that. But she didn't have that problem of looking him right in the eye during that debate, did she. Let's see. She looked him right in the eye, and said, you are a disgrace. She looked him right in the eye and said, world leaders are laughing at you. She revealed to the entire world what he is. A fraud. At a rally in wilskberry, kamala harris was introduced by a republican nurse. Donald trump doesn't care about families like mine, he cares about himself. And pennsylvania it's time to turn the page once and for all. That is why. We're not going back. We're not going back. We're not going back. We're not going back. We're not going back. That's why i am so excited and yes, as a lifelong republican, to cast my vote for kamala harris in november. Kamala harris then said this. One of the things that i love about everyone who is here and what we are doing, you know in the midst of this moment where there are people trying to divide us as a nation, trying to make people feel small and feel alone. These are moments that remind all of us, that we are all in this together as one loving community. We are ready for a new generation of leadership. That is optimistic about what we can do together. Which is why, and mary grace, thank you. Which is why democrats, republicans and independents are supporting our campaign. We need a president of the united states who works for all the american people. That just stops with all the trying to divide us. Like people are exhausted with that stuff. Exhausted. Just imagine donald trump with no guardrails. Imagine what that might mean. Right. He who has vowed if reelected he would be a dictator on day one. He who called for the quote termination of the constitution of the united states. And let us be clear, someone who suggests we should terminate the constitution of the united states of america, should never again stand behind the seal of the president of the united states. The presidenf the united states. Never again. Never again. So pennsylvania, it all comes down to this, we are here together because we love our country. We love our country. And we who are here understand the awesome responsibility. The awesome responsibility that comes with the greatest privilege on earth, the privilege and pride of being an american. Usa, usa, usa, usa, usa, usa, usa. And i do believe it is the highest form of patriotism to fight for the ideals of our country and to fight, to realize the promise of america. Joining us now is jim greenwood he's the cochair of pennsylvania republicans for harris. Also with us mary grace fidela. She's the republican nurse who introduced vice president harris in wilksberry today. Welcome to both of you. Congressman, thank you for seeing you again. My pleasure. Mary grace. It was great to watch you because, i am really into people who display courage. You could have voted for kamala harris and no one needed to know about that. Tell me how it felt to be up there explaining as a republican why you thought this was important to do. Why this is part of a new way forward for you, for many republicans, and for pennsylvania. Sure, thank you for having me. And i just want to say it was such an honor and so exciting to be there tonight with the vice president. I don't think it takes courage. It's about our families work ethic that we were taught. We were raised in a coal mining family and my brother and i, my son were all in some sort of service industry. Including my brother he's a public school teacher. Our work ether work ethic is something she exudes. She loves democracy. It was wonderful to meet her and talk about that. I'm just thrilled to be there. A nurse married to a public school teacher from a coal mining family. There's a whole lot of courage in your genes. Congressman, talk to me about, because what you have been doing with pennsylvania republicans for harris, as part of this larger republicans for harris group, you were in it early but it's becoming relatively popular. We're seeing more and more republicans including some very conservative republicans who are saying this is the way its got to go. Is there a permission structure there by being able to say you're actually republicans. You're not fore saking your party, your beliefs or what you think is important. You are republicans who are doing something else right now. Right it's about putting your country ahead of your party. It's about doing what you know is the right thing to do. Look in pennsylvania, there are hundreds of thousands of republicans who don't want to vote for donald trump. And that was evidenced in the primary when 157,000 republicans voted for nikki hallly even after she had left nikki haley even after she had left her campaign. That was 30% of the primary. That means there's probably three times that number that don't want to vote for trump. What she has to do and she's such a fabulous candidate. Such a level person, but what she has to do is she has to elate the fears of voters that by voting for her they're not going to make the country tilt to the left. I think the way for her to express that is, look it's so hard to run for office. It's so hard to be in office whether you're the president or a member of congress. It's not worth all of that just to be polarized and get nothing done. The biden administration got a trillion dollars infrastructure bill done. It got the chips bill done so america could lead in microchips. They got some work done on guns. And it was all done in a bipartisan fashion. So she has to say look, i want to get some stuff done for this country and i know i have to reach across the aisle to do it and that's what i'll do. I'll find middle ways to get things done. Compromises to get things done. I think if enough pennsylvanians across the country hear that they will feel comfortable to do what her heart tells them to do. And it was mary grace that had us watching the last time around. So we have to figure out how we're going to go there. I think we all grew up in places that we understand that a president or member of congress like jim get elected by all of us. Even those of us who don't vote for them and then they are there to represent all of us. It's remarkable because vice president harris says this increasingly at her campaign stops. But it should be obvious. That the president should be the president for all people. The election is the election and the day after the election, that partisanship needs to be put aside in service of serving the country. Yes, i agree 100%. And the president should unite us not divide us. And in 2020, when i worked the front lines and dealt with my mom with her death and covid and i looked to the president for comfort, i didn't find comfort at all. I just, i couldn't believe he was dividing the country like he did with just not even encouraging a mask. So i worry about what the future will be if there is another crisis and what would happen would be scary to me. Tim, latest poll of likely voters in pennsylvania is exactly the way pennsylvania looks to us. It's a 50/50 state. It is always a tight state. It's always a fight to the finish there. One of the things that make the state interesting is the degree that it was republicans who supported a number of democrats as they did in arizona, as some did in michigan. These are republicans who would like a party, they would actually like a party that works and functions and they would like to purge it of people that are dividists or conspiracy theorists or anything like that. What is the end goal. Would you like to have good debates about democrats about the differences in policies and may the best person win. Absolutely. And shapiro,, yes we need to get donald trump off the stage once and for all and have the republican party come back to its senses. Stop hiding in the corner from fear and actually try to reach across the aisle and get things done. It's the only way to get things done. So if we can finally get beyond the trump era, and get some republicans who have some intelligence, some emotions that support a broad range of ideas, then we can start all over again. And we need to. We need two parties, it's absolutely imperative that we have the two partys to balance off and compromise and find middle ground. And to hold everybody to account. Right. The whole point of more than one party is to hold everybody to account. Mary grace, liz cheney got her dad to say he's voting for kamala harris which is something that a whole bunch of us didn't expect to happen. But tell me how this works for you and other republicans. Are you invited to speak to other republicans, have you engaged with other republicans and what do you say to them? i am so proud of liz cheney and her dad. I couldn't be more glad to be part of that old school republican party. It's no longer the gop or the bush gop or gerald ford. You know, i do speak to some republicans. Their voices do need to be heard but they just picked the wrong spokesman. And i can't go back and i can't choose him as my spokesperson to represent my needs and our democracy. Our thanks to all ofl all of you. And mary grace we're very thankful for your service. And i'm you lost your mom to covid. But thank you for your courage. And jim greenwood who is the chair of pennsylvania republicans for harris. Today vice president harris told reporters she's feeling good about pennsylvania. Vice president how are you feeling about pennsylvania in. I am feeling very good about pennsylvania because there are a lot of people in pennsylvania who deserve to be seen and heard. That's why i'm here in johns town. And i will be continuing to travel around the state to make sure that, i am listening as much as we are talking and ultimately i feel very strongly that, i have to earn every vote. And that means spending time with folks in the communities where they live. And so that's why i'm here. We're going to be spending a lot more time in pennsylvania. Joining us now is the pennsylvania house speaker joanna mcclinton. As always all eyes are on pennsylvania. Like last time around there's an energy in pennsylvania and clearly the vice president and her team are spending a lot of time in that state. Because it may be where the decision is made. Ali, it's good to be back. Thank you. It is very important that kamala harris spends every bit of time she has in the commonwealth of pennsylvania because we are a purple state. We're a state that sometime is red, other times blue and we have seen that in the elections prior to 2020. We think about 2016, how much excitement. How much optimism was around that race and how we lost by 40,000 votes. And we did not need the entire state obviously the entire electoral to vote for hillary clinton. But this go around in 204 204 2024 and with everything on the line and kamala providing a new way forward, we are not going to take any where for granted particularly areas where we saw the former president was victorious. We're talking about cambria county, lesern county. Places that were always blue for generations we're coming back. Even if they changed generations. We want to be able to earn their vote and tell them why they need to join the new way forward and elect kamala harris. Let's talk about that because there's an impression about pennsylvania in that it's got a few major centers, urban centers that tend to be a little bit more liberal and that it's got a lot of red rural. That's a misconception all over the country. That middle section is hard working. It has in some cases seen some real hard times with factories that have disappeared and industries that have disappeared. There's no reason that anybody there should be democrat or republican and they have been all the time. That's correct pennsylvania has 67 counties. Most people don't know that our state is not just philadelphia where i live and pittsburgh. It's so much more than that. 48 of our counties are in rural pennsylvania. There's lots of generations of hard working families. We just heard from the nurse, who talked about a coal mining family. We know many that are still farming in this day and age and we understand that no one should be forgotten. No one's vote should be taken for granted that you're just going to vote this way or just going to vote that way. I'm so proud tonight here in south philly to know that kamala is in these areas. She's on the ground. She's not sending surrogates but she's there. Sitting down, meeting with volunteers. We are working very hard so that come november we can win. All right and what, one of the things we're talking to jim greenwood about is the fact that in the last election there were a lot of republicans who came out in support of democrats because they are disappointed on how the republican party and in some cases with the candidates are feeling and behaving and they want their party back. That's actually working in favor of kamala harris. When you think about our former president or nothing that he stands for, you determine what you want to choose, he's a big bully. He has injected not only hatred, not only cynicism, not only division, i remember him talking about a muslim ban as soon as he was elected. I remember in 2016 when he was having so many homophobic comments. He showed us that he doesn't care about democracy. He tried to steal the election and on that debate stage this week right here in philly he would not back down from it. He would not admit that he lost. So we cannot take anything for granted. And we absolutely must elect kamala come november. Remember when all those weird things he used to say are quaint compared to some of the stuff he comes up with today. Thank you for being with us. Thank you. The fact that house republicans are threatening a shut down and demanding in exchange for keeping the government open, the enactment of deeply dangerous and unpopular parts of trump's project 2025 agenda, is unserious and unacceptable. The unserious and unacceptable provision is about voter i. D. To prevent noncitizen voting. Which is not a thing. The white house has already said it will veto such a bill. Saying the republican provision will make it much harder for all eligible americans to be able to vote. This legislation is unnecessary. It is already illegal for noncitizens to vote in federal elections. It is a federal crime punishable by prison and fines. This behavior is wrong and the law clearly prohibits it. States already have effective safeguards in place to verify voters eligible and maintain voter rolls, end quote. Let's be clear, donald trump lost the 2020 election because 7 million more people voted for president biden. And enough of those people lived in battleground states. It wasn't a close election. And it's not because of made up voter fraud it's not because of noncitizens voting in election. But the vitrial misinformation has been memed into reality. Only one swing state wisconsin has a majority of voters who say they are very confident about the accuracy of their states voting process. The constant repetition of republican conspiracy theorists and unnecessary recounts by folks like the cyber ninjas has succeeded in sewing doubt in voters mind. The election was in fact, the most secure and safest election in modern history. Now, here's the other problem. There are only nine legislative days left on the calendar before a federal government shut down. But republicans are willing to shut down federal services and destabilize the country in pursuit of a zenophobic and racist agenda all so that donald trump doesn't have to face that he's a loser and may be a loser yet again in november. Joining us now jonah goose. Do we talk about. I guess i would first just say, with respect to the former as you said, it is already illegal under federal law, it is a crime of course for noncitizens to vote in federal elections. And for all the reasons that you've stated and of course the reasons that leader jeffreys so eloquently stated, they have taken hostage to pursue an extremely partisan continued resolution that ultimately would harm not just of course our nation's veterans and veterans health care, a wide variety of critically important programs but as you said, also seeks to implement trump's 2025 inspired idea to this provision you've described. I think that the american people are tired of it. They would like to see house republicans work in good faith with house democrats on a bipartisan path forward that funds the government which we have certainly tried to do. Time and time again. But as you know, house republicans currency this congress has been chaos and dysfunction and this particular continued resolution and the bill you mentioned is of course consistent with that approach. In this weird service of don donald trump. It's an issue for a lot of people. There was a bill. A bill that many people did not like. But people came together to create a bill and donald trump killed that bill. Government shut downs used to be rare. And they happened because something was holding them up. This is a nonsensical bill that doesn't need to pass. I agree on both fronts, ali. In respect to your first point that the dangerous and offensive rhetoric that the former president has been engaged in. I agree, largely away from what he doesn't want to talk about which is that ultimately at his behest republicans killed a bipartisan border security bill that would have addressed and emit rated many of the challenges on the u. S. Border. House republicans have made shut downs a part of their, the american people are tired of it. It's one of the reason that the message of vice president harris is resinates so deeply with the american people. I don't mean to debase this conversation by bringing up this other nonsense we were talking about earlier. But you were a child of immigrant, i am an immigrant to this country. It was outstanding to watch a presidential debate where one of the candidates was discussing people eating pets. But it is actually racist. It's really dangerous. It's not as mike dewine says from the internet. It's a weird conspiracy theory that the guy who wants to be president of the united states is promulgating. Ali, i would say this so 40 years ago there was a previous president who made a speech on the second to last day of their presidency. And that speech talked about the importance of immigrants and in particular, the fact that our country's status is a beacon of freedom and opportunity to the world is one of the core parts of america's greatness. That president was a republican. It was ronald reagan in a speech that has become memorable over the course of the ensuing decades. It gives you a sense of just how far unfortunately the republican party, at large, of course led by former president trump and so many of his si ca fans have gone away from what was our country. I find it deeply offensive as do you. The vast majority of americans do too. And they are not interested in the divisive rhetoric that former president trump has highlighted. They want something different. They want a new way forward. They want an optimistic for the future. And that's what kamala harris has been offering. Don't forget the down ballot races. Several state legislatures are within just a few seats of flipping control, including in arizona, central to donald trump's 2020 election lies, where republicans control both chambers by just two seats. Democrats are also looking to protect majorities in states like michigan after democrats won trifecta control of the state government during the midterms. And as politico notes, past a litany of progressive policy priorities like gun safety, abortion protections and repealing a law. In pennsylvania the democrats currently have a one seat deficit but they maintain control until three special elections are decided. In the post dobbs landscape, republican state legislatures are passing abortion bans that have put women's lives at risk, sought to punish women and doctors with jail time, and targeted ivf treatments. Democrats have multiple one seat majorities, minnesota, michigan and pennsylvania you talked about. There are a few seats away from breaking some republican majorities in new hampshire and arizona, in places like north carolina, a gerrymandered state that has super majorities. But again, by one seat in some cases. So there are a lot of inroads to be made to. That is exactly right and what's so great about the state legislative ballot level and what is happening in our state capitals is that there are multiple ways to get at this problem. In north carolina, breaking a super majority that republicans have will ensure that incoming governor josh stein will have that veto pen and will be able to ensure that the rights and protections of north carolinians are in place.
