This Morning Vice President harris prepares for two day of a Battleground Blitz as Donald Trump doubles down on a Conspiracy Theory. Donald trump will hold a Press Event where hell likely face questions about promoting unfounded far right claims about migrants eating pets in ohio, a fixation some top republicans think could cost him in key states. Vice president harris was in one of those states Last Night, north carolina, thats where she called for a debate rematch. Look, i believe we owe it to have another debate. We owe it to the voters. Trump nixed that idea on social media, and during his rally in arizona yesterday. So because weve done so debates and because they were successful, there will be no third debate. Its too late, anyway, the voting has already begun. Youve got to go out and vote. Nbcs Vaughn Hillyard is covering the Trump Campaign and Kelly Odonnell is in Washington Tracking Vp harris. Also with us, former rnc communications director. Vaughn, whats the thinking behind Trumps Decision to go in front of the Press Today as hes doubling down on this Conspiracy Theory . Reporter just about two hours from now he is set to address us and the press here at his Golf Club in los angeles. Of course, Donald Trumps campaign, multiple events, Press Conferences over the last weeks, and in several instances, including last week at trump tower, he ultimately he talked for quite a long time, almost an hour, last week at trump tower, but then declined to take any questions here. And yet we saw yesterday he was in tucson, arizona, for a campaign rally. He will be making his Way Tonight to las vegas. But its moments like these where he is able to gather cameras, and, of course, 50 days out from The General election, there is ever more increased Attention And Scrutiny on every word that he speaks. And so we are here and the question is whether there will be an opportunity to follow up on any of those questions stemming from the debate. Just yesterday our colleagues over at Telemundo Arizona did ask him about the remarks, the baseless claims about haitian immigrants that he made in ohio, and Donald Trump all be doubled down, referring to reports of peoples pets being stolen here. And so this comes a moment in time where you have a democratic ticket that is continuing to try to focus on a broader theme of unity and policy, and the republican ticket, the republican campaign here is mired in controversy over baseless claims and association with people like laura loomer, a prominent Conspiracy Theorist. Whats on tap for the Vice President today and what do we know about her strategy . Reporter we know the Vice President is headed to trump territory. Shes going to counties in pennsylvania where Donald Trump has proven to be successful in the past. So shell be in johnstown, where shell be meeting with small businesses. Shell be in the Scranton Area and speak later tonight. Part of what theyre trying to focus on is going to places where they know they need to expand her in terms of recognition, in terms of potential support, and to go to places where she might not be the preferred candidate if we look back at the last couple of elections. So Thats Part of the strategy. Theyre also trying to make sure that they hit major Media Markets in the big battleground states, so whether its the Vice President or the other top principals, Governor Walz in michigan, their spouses fanning out. This is a more aggressive phase of the campaign according to the campaign, they say they want to have the Vice President out there more, doing more interviews, being more accessible, picking up the pace would be a quick way to describe it. Does the Harris Camp think this is the final word on another debate, kelly . Reporter well, at this point they are still hopeful that another debate can happen. They believe it is in the best interest of voters, so weve heard from the Vice President herself, and perhaps, because we know that Donald Trump has in the past often said things that he might change his mind about, so they dont think the door is closed. And there will be a little time to let that evolve. We know theres a scheduled debate between the Vice President ial candidates, Governor Walz of minnesota, Senator Vance of ohio. Those are important, but certainly the Harris Campaign believes another opportunity for voters to see Donald Trump Side By side with Kamala Harris is important. So theyll continue to talk about it. Thank you both. Doug, youre a coms guy. Why do you think trump is waving off another debate . One, it didnt go very well for him. To kellys point, Donald Trump often will slam a Door Shut and then pry it back open slowly, or sometimes jar it open quickly. I dont rule out that there will be another debate. I think it would be in both of the Candidates Interest for there to be another debate. Kamala harris has to put more meat on the bones of who she is and what she wants to do. Donald trump has to show that he can be a more disciplined messenger than he was in the previous debate. Both of those are needs the candidates need to do, because we came out of that debate, very clearly Kamala Harris won it, but the result is we went into it as a close race, we came out of it as a close race. That hasnt changed. Trump appears to be less disciplined coming out of that debate as he continues to just push out Conspiracy Theories, and you have Conspiracy Theorist laura loomer, apparently working her way into trumps inner circle, just weeks after Corey Lewandowski got back into the fold. What does this tell you about trump and his campaign right now . It tells me theres still a Tug Of War thats happening between the real professionals at the campaign, and then those that ill call the Addams Family, who push these Fringe Ideas and Conspiracy Theories and take us into bizarre places that have real impact in places like springfield, ohio, and then, obviously, distract the campaign from doing the things that they should be talking about. So if youre talking about Cats And Dogs, if youre the arizona republican Party And Youve just put a billboard out there about Cats And Dogs, youre not talking about the things that you should be talking about, that prices are too high and voters are upset about that, that the border is still insecure and voters are upset about that. You have to go nine nonstandard deviations away from the border to get to Cats And Dogs, and its just a bizarre topic that doesnt win over voters. Youve got to get back to that. And the other thing i would say is you keep out the Addams Family people because this is and its a real strug well the Trump Campaign, but its becoming a Feature And Bug of that campaign and it limits their impact in the swing states. We saw a similar dynamic with trumps running mate decision, he went with the favorite of hardliners like don jr. , charlie kirk, seemingly ignoring conventional wisdom that you pivot to the center in The General. How do you make sense of that . Well, i dont think either Candidate Pivoted to the center, certainly. Tim walz is really he has that folksy attitude, but he comes from the left of the party, as does Kamala Harris, who is trying to pivot to the center now. That pick somewhat limits that. J. D. Vance comes from the united States Senate and has an interesting history about trying to connect with rural voters and talking about their struggles in a way that a lot of republicans havent. I dont always love his language, certainly, some of the ideas. But hes talking about those voters who feel forgotten. Its why its interesting to me that today Kamala Harris is going to come of those communities, wilkesbarre, where part of my Family Ancestry is from from, and ill be interested when she goes back to north carolina. Stop going to greensboro. Go to greenville, north carolina, some of the smaller communities, or smaller communities where there are hbcus and well see how some of Harris Messaging and targeting of different voters might work out. On the j. D. Vance stuff, i dont know how those childless cat ladies comments are helping the Trump Campaign. Theyre not. With the type of voters they need to win this election. The Vice President heading to a couple of areas of pennsylvania that trump won in 2020. So what in the Campaign Math makes you think that this is the best strategy right now, to spend time in Trump Country . Thanks for having me, and you think about what the Vice President is doing today. Shes stumping across these two counties that Donald Trump won in 2020 to expand her appeal and to grow her support in these areas. I mean, youre talking about a state, pennsylvania, that was decided in 2020 by around 80,000 votes. These are slim margins in the battleground states, were a divided country. The Vice President is focused on trying to grow her coalition. Youve seen recently more than 200 alums of the bush, Mccain And Romney campaigns coming out to support her. Vice president dick cheney, his daughter, liz cheney, just yesterday the former bush attorney general, alberto gonzalez, endorsing her candidacy. Shes making real gains among republicans, and i think its because people see that shes offering a positive vision for the country and rejecting the Chaos And Division of Donald Trump. And so when you go in to communities like this in cambria county, pennsylvania, where the margins really matter, shes speaking to voters to try to get her message out that we can actually turn the page on the Donald Trump era and come together and unite as a country. We have a new ad out this morning featuring the moment in the debate where the Vice President says, when i was a prosecutor, i never asked a victim whether they were a republican or a democrat, i just asked them, are you okay . And thats the type of ethos we need from the president who is going to be looking out for all americans. This is the kind of message shes taking to Redder Areas where Donald Trump may have won to help grow her support, and hopefully put her Over The Edge in these battleground states. Ian, trump has been leaning into that baseless Conspiracy Theory about migrants eating pets. Whats your message to voters, who even though theyre seeing this, are still undecided . Look, i think the message to them, is Donald Trump even talking about anything you care about . I mean, What In The World is this eating dogs and Cats Stuff . Its a right wing Conspiracy Theory, theres nbc reporting this morning talking about how neonazis are championing the fact that he brought this to the Debate Stage. I mean, he is speaking to a scary far right fringe right now and bringing those issues to the Debate Stage instead of issues that people actually care about. In the first five minutes, Vice President harris talked about her plan to expand small businesses and give new Small Business Owners A 50,000 Tax Deduction to help them afford to start a business. She talked about her plans to take on Grocery Pricing and Housing Pricing and bring those down for the american people. She talked about reproductive freedom and how she wants to protect it and sign a law that codifies roe v. Wade. Those are the things that voters actually care about. And Donald Trump is ranting about Conspiracy Theories that dont make any sense and that people are actually laughing at when he says them. So theres a fundamental difference in this election between one candidate who is talking about issues that actually matter to the american people and another candidate who is ranting and raving like a lunatic. When you talk about trying to expand who shes reaching, we have heard from some undecided voters that weve talked to, that even after the debate, they still dont know enough about the Vice President s plans for the future and how her vision is different from President Bidens. What do you say to that . I say this is a big part of what were doing over the next 50 days. She was able to do it in the debate, to talk about her own proposals and what her own priorities would be as president. She said, you know, im not President Biden, and im certainly not Donald Trump, and shes offering her own set of proposals and vision for the country, and what the next 50 some odd days will do is allow her to get on the Campaign Trail and share those priorities directly with the american people. So part of what you do in a campaign is you take your message out there to the voters, and so what shes going to be doing is continuing to explain how she wants to bring down prices, how she wants to create new small businesses in this country, the things that are her real economic priorities, that may be a little bit different than what President Biden has proposed and emphasized, but speaks to what she will do as president with her priorities. Can you point to those specific differences on those key issues . Well, for example, just a couple weeks ago in her plan to support small businesses, she talked about the Investment Climate that we need in order to help entrepreneurs start small businesses and grow. President biden had proposed raising the Capital Gains longterm capital Gains Rate on the top bracket up to 40 . She thought that was too high, so she suggested a lower rate of 28 as the number because it could help incentivize more investment in entrepreneurs and startups in america. Thats because she believes in sparking growth among small businesses in this country. So there are distinctions, certainly, on policy, but i think the other thing that people often should remember, you know, theyre different people. When youre campaigning, people want to see someone who reflects their values, someone they can relate to. When the Vice President talks about her history as a prosecutor, for example, and who she was fighting to protect and who she was defending, taking on big banks to get 20 Billion for homeowners who got screwed during the financial crisis, you know, taking on gangs who were smuggling people and drugs across the border, that is her History And Record that she brings to her values that she would prioritize on policy as president. Tens of thousands of Union Machinists employed by Aviation Giant Boeing are heading to the Picket Lines to strike today, after rejecting the latest contract offer. This move sets up a showdown that could have massive rippling effects throughout the u. S. Economy and it could be the most disruptive challenge for boeing after what has been a turbulent year. Senior News Correspondent Tom Costello is following developments. What do we know about why these 30,000 workers or so voted to strike . Bottom line is the company had offered and the tentative agreement had called for the workers to get a 25 pay hike. However, youve got to understand the context here. These workers have gone with stagnant pay since 2014, no pay hike. They lost their pensions. Factor in the Fact Youve had massive inflation affecting all families. The workers have wanted a 40 pay hike, not a 25 pay hike. They said this offer simply doesnt go far enough. And, by the way, the new ceo of boeing just took the job and hes making more than 30 Million a year, these workers pay hasnt gone up significantly in ten years. So 94. 6 of the workers, a phenomenal Number Vote to do walk off the job. Keep in mind, the Boeings Max Door blowout, investigations finding that the culture of Quality Control at boeing had broken down, boeing admitted that. Then boeing admitted that felony charges related to the two max 8 crashes overseas that killed 346 people. Boeings Starliner Spaceship was found to be unsafe and two astronauts are on the space station, even though starliner returned safely without them. Their Defense Unit is also struggling. Every division within boeing has been struggling and losing significant amounts of money. This strike, no idea how long it might last. Both sides say they want to get back to the table. But the last time there was a strike was in 2008. It lasted 58 days, cnbc estimating that this could cost the company close to A Billion Dollars a month, depending on how long it will last, with so many workers off the job. And at that kind of a rejection rate, again, 94. 6 of the workers saying no, youve got to wonder how long it might take for them to come to an agreement with the company, ana. The faa says the aircraft was forced to abruptly abort takeoff to avoid a collision with a southwest Airlines Flight that had also been cleared to cross on the same runway. Alaska airlines says its pilots acted immediately, but were forced to brake so hard, the planes tires blew out and melted from the Heat And Friction generated on the runway. No one was injured, thankfully. The 176 passengers were rebooked on another plane to seattle. The faa and national Transportation Safety Board are investigating. We are keeping an eye on georgia this hour, as Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has not appeared at a hearing held by a republicanled State Senate committee investigating her conduct overseeing the Georgia Election Interference case against Donald Trump. Meantime, the judge overseeing that case just tossed out three more charges, including two against the former president that accused him of filing false documents to a federal court. Nbcs Marissa Parra is joining us from the statehouse in atlanta, and also with us, joyce vance, former u. S. Attorney and msnbc legal analyst. What can you tell us about where things stand as of this hour with that hearing, and how is d. A. Willis explaining her decision to not attend the hearing this morning, even after a subpoena . Reporter hey, ana, good to be with you. So this just started a few minutes ago. It did start a little bit late. Right now theyre just running through the legislative process. But, remember, as you just said, this is a republicanformed investigative senate committee. They were looking to hear from willis herself this morning, and we actually heard from the chairman, he said, we have subpoenaed willis, and he cited reports that she was not going to appear. He said, we welcome her if she does decide to appear. Of course, hes referencing what we saw the atlanta journal constitution, What Willis Lead Attorney said, that she will not be appearing today. But theyre not couching it the same way. Theyre not saying shes defying her subpoena. Theyre actually questioning the validity of the subpoena altogether, which is a totally separate thing. She, through her attorney, says she will not be appearing until, quote, there has been a judicial determination of the validity of that subpoena, and this is something, by the way, that we really havent seen, and this could move to the State Court of appeals, and they are the same ones, of course, making the ultimate decision here, the determination on whether she will stay on the Election Interference Case altogether. And all of this, of course, as were learning of those counts that are being tossed against former President Trump in this case that has been on hold since june, as these questions remain on whether or not she will stay on this case to begin with. Joyce, we all remember back in march, Judge Mcafee first dropped some charges that were related to trumps efforts to solicit georgia officials to violate their oaths of office, so that got thrown out from that 41count indictment. Now the Judge Mass quashed three more charges, two that relate to trump specifically. What were the latest charges hes throwing out and whats the reasoning for that . Right. So the impact on Donald Trump is negligible. The most important charge, the rico count, will move forward. What the judge did here was he found that there was a problem with some of these charges involving a conspiracy, an attempt, and the actual filing of false statements, false statements related to the election. His ruling is technical, he says those charges belong in federal court, not in State Court, so he dismissed those three counts, but only those three counts. So where does that leave the future of this case, then . Is there still meat on the bone as far as the Charges Trump is facing here . Yes, there is plenty of meat on the bone. Its the rico charge, the large overarching conspiracy thats so central to the efforts to interfere with the Vote Count in georgia, and at least for now, that charge goes forward. And so, in terms of when we could expect any kind of action in the courtroom, what does the timeline look like . Right. So thats complicated, because were in the middle of this Georgia Appellate Process Over Whether or not Fani Willis can continue with the case. What were seeing in georgia, a largely republicanled state, is sort of the equivalent of when Jim Jordan announces hes holding committee hearings in washington over weaponization of government by democrats. Thats what were seeing in georgia now with this legislative effort to Delay Willis prosecution. There are separation of powers issues that keep the legislative branch from looking into what prosecutors are doing, and here theyve demanded documents and insight into her case while its ongoing. Willis lawyer has said no. Its not that shes defying the subpoena. She is not steve bannon. Instead, her lawyer is challenging the legitimacy of the subpoena. The other issues will have to be resolved before this case can move forward. Joyce vance, as always, we appreciate your expertise. Thank you so much for joining us. Breaking news involving the Trump Campaign now, the Justice Department is planning to file criminal charges related to the hack of the former president s campaign. Thats according to two Law Enforcement officials. The fbi believes iran was behind the hack and tried to steal emails and offer other internal Trump Campaign documents to news organizations. No evidence that anything was actually published. Nbcs Jonathan Allen is joining us now. What more are we learning about who would be charged in connection to this hack . Its a great question. Law enforcement sources are not really giving that up yet. Theres obviously a lot of concern. There has been concern among intelligence officials, among defense officials, political campaigns now for several campaign cycles about foreign interference in our elections. This has been centered on the investigation has been centered on iran trying to disrupt this election by stealing emails, basically stealing emails from the Trump Campaign and other documents to try to distribute them, get them out in the open. Trump has continued to push this baseless claim. Can you walk us through the origins of this and what the facts are . Well, yes, ana, first of all, it is baseless. There are no facts behind this. Springfield is a city that, over recent years, has seen a haitian migrant boom. Most of them are living there legally, they have temporary protected status the biden administration granted early this year because of the very difficult situation, political situation going on in haiti now. So theyre able to work there and live there legally. In a lot of cases theyve been an Economy Boon to the city of springfield that had lost workers over the years. This idea about a dog or a cat was completely false. The only thing that was even an origin of truth, there was a woman in canton, ohio, 170 miles away, who was born in canton, ohio, who is not an immigrant, who did have a mental Health Break and apparently, according to police, did kill and eat a cat, and the Body Cam Video of her arrest was on camera. And that was in july. Somehow, that led to these claims now. So the haitian people know about being targeted. By the way, i also know ohio, and you know ohio is an open Carry State in terms of guns. And you know how much people love their pets. There is no way that ohio, where you have guns and people are going to be allowing these people to walk away with their Cats And Dogs. Somebody is going to be taking out a gun and saying youre not taking my dog, which is why its not happening, its not true. Im glad that we are continuing to Fact Check because its a lie. On top of it, you have the impact of the lies with the threat we mentioned, the bomb threat, that forced the evacuation of city hall, to schools, the states dmv. The mayor saying these threats were a hateful response to immigration in our town and that the community is hurting. And just this morning were learning that j. D. Vance is tweeting about this. Let me read you what he just tweeted. Dont let biased Media Shame you into not discussing this slowmoving humanitarian crisis in a small ohio town. We should talk about it every single day. Kamala harris did this and shell keep doing it unless we stop her. And whats happening in springfield and in other communities where there are black immigrants, many, many of the new refugees and immigrants coming to our cities and countries are black. They are vulnerable. They are being targeted yet again because of their race. And trumps campaign will not let this go. They dont care that the officials in the town are saying, this isnt true. And having just been in South Florida with many trump supporters who are latinos and latinas, as i hear this and saw the debate, they will believe what hes saying and they will double down on this story of Cats And Dogs and pets. Why . Why are they likely to believe it . There is something about the way that Donald Trump delivers, this kind of strong man. You know, we saw it in the debate. He says sentences with five words, comes at you and repeats. This is what an authoritarian and strong man looks like. In parts of these communities, they can identify with a strong man that is saying im going to protect you. And thats why i was seeing among many venezuelan refugees, theyre saying theyre going to vote for Donald Trump. I live some parts of the year in a community in the Dominican Republic that has many haitians, because theres a lot of construction. And i was talking to the Cab Driver this morning and he was, like, dominican, and he said, remember, we never hear about this in the Dominican Republic where you have Tens Of Thousands of haitian immigrants and refugees living there, never, nunca, has there been a story of them taking Cats And Dogs. So, no, its not happening, and we have to continue to repeat that its just not true. I want to come back to another piece of the Immigration Issue and the border security, the numbers that julia brought up, the Border Patrol numbers from july show encounters at their lowest monthly total since September Of 2020. Remember, that was a pandemic month. So the numbers have been low because of that as well. So we have the facts that counter much of what were hearing from Donald Trump and his allies about migrants. Why do you think trump remains so focused on fearmongering about migrants and the border . We know why hes doing that, because it works for him, because he doubles down and it works for him. All hes been able to say the build is wall. Thats a major part of his campaign. I think the question is, what does Kamala Harris and her campaign do . And i was not satisfied with her responses in terms of the debate. She needed to be stronger and to say those are lies, what you are saying is lies. And especially Kamala Harris, who is the daughter of immigrants, she needs to take this issue and flip the narrative completely, which is what i continue to say, she needs to have a national address prime time to say, this has got to stop. Its not true, im an immigrant, i am the story, i am the success, and this is who we are. And to people watching, they need to just open their eyes. In fact, immigrants like we just heard in springfield, theyre doing the work, theyre building up the economy. The Brookings Institute just released a statement saying immigrants create jobs and create wealth. The brookings are not a leftist organization at all. And those are the facts.
