November 5th is still 54 days away but today voters started casting the first ballots of the 2024 election. Yesterday, Absentee Ballots went out in the state of alabama. Today we are seeing local news reports that people are already turning those ballots in. So, we are off to the races, people. Next week, wisconsin starts mailing out its Absentee Ballots in pennsylvania, minnesota, South Carolina and virginia, they all start in person early voting. Slowly but surely the rest of the states will follow. And what that means for this race is that the woundo to change voters minds is closing. Today, Donald Trump announced he will not have a second debate with Vice President harris. As everyone saw two nights ago we had a monumental victory over Kamala Harris in the president ial debate. Harris, though, said she and trump owe it to the voters to have another debate. Now, trump is explaining why he doesnt want another debate by saying, when a prizefighter loses a fight, the first words out of his mouth are, i want a rematch, and trumps claim that polls clearly show that i won the debate. For the record, one poll tells a very different story according to morning consult before the debate, harris was leading by three points within the margin of error, the day of the debate it widened to four points and after it widened to 5 points, but, yes, Donald Trump says he does not need another debate because how clearly he won the first and second ones. Because we have done two debates and they were successful there will be no third debate. It is too late, any way, voting has begun. At least one of those Points Trump is right. The voting has begun. And, it is about to begin in some of the states that are going to decide the election like pennsylvania which, again, starts early voting next week. Without anymore debates, how do you reach the voters before, as trump put it, it is too late in well, one way is through ads. Today, the Harris Campaign announced in the 24 hours after the debate, harris had her best Fundraising Day since the launch of her campaign. The campaign says it raised 47 Million in 24 hours. And that could help bolster them. Those ads will keep the memory of harrisvictory on the Debate Stage very much alive. The Harris Campaign announced it is going to release a series of ads highlights footage from the debate to get Harris Performance in front of as many voters as possible. Here is the latest one of the ads that the campaign released a few hours ago. I want to turn to the issue of abortion. For 52 years they have been trying to get roe v. Wade into the states. I did a great service in doing it. It took courage to do it and the Supreme Court had great courage in doing it. I talked with women around our country. You want to talk about this is what people wanted . Pregnant women, who want to carry a pregnancy to Term Suffering from a miscarriage, being denied care in an Emergency Room because their Health Care providers are afraid they might go to jail and she is bleeding out in a car in a parking lot. She didnt want that, her husband didnt want that. A 12 or 13yearold survivor of incest. Being forced to carrys pregnancy to term . They dont want that. I think the american people believe that certain freedoms in particular the freedom to make decisions about ones own body should not be made by the government. Im Kamala Harris and i approve this message. Beyond the ads they are planning Meet Swing State voters by doubling down on retail politics, today, tim walz was in michigan, second Gentleman Doug Emhoff did events in arizona and Vice President harris had two rallies in North Carolina. You might be thinking North Carolina . Democrats have not won North Carolina in a president ial election since Barack Obama in 2008 and they have not won it before then since Jimmy Carter in 1976. The Harris Campaign is making a Big Bet that North Carolina is in play this year. According to polling this week, harris is leading trump in North Carolina by three points, that is within the margin of error but still, three points, North Carolina. And an official with the Harris Campaign said the Harris Campaign set up 26 Field Offices across North Carolina and that since harris became the nominee more than 20,000 North Carolinians have signed up to volunteer for the campaign. So, again, i know we are 54 days out from November 5th. But the first ballots of 2024 election were cast today. This is a marathon but it is also a sprint. It is time to turn the page. [ cheers and applause ] turn the page. [ cheers and applause ] [ laughter ] we are ready for a new generation of leadership that is optimistic, optimistic about what we can do for our country together. I will always put country above party. From the courthouse to the white house, i have always fought for the people. Always fought for the people. [ cheers and applause ] North Carolina we have 54 days until Election Day. 54 days. And with your help we will win. We will win. [ cheers and applause ] win. We will win. [ cheers and applause ]. Joining me now is michael tyler, the Communication Director for the harriswalz campaign. I appreciate your time in advance. Let me first just ask about the second debate with Donald Trump for harris what trump is calling the third debate. Are you surprised that it is a if you remember no from the Trump Campaign given the fact that trump acknowledges the loser often wants a rematch . And do you think it is a firm no . Reporter listen, thank you for having me this evening. I am not certain that it is a firm no. Listen, Donald Trump also said for the first debate with the Vice President that he was happy with Unmuted Microphones but the team overruled hip. We will see if it happens again. The Vice President made it clear, she thinks the american people deserve to see, once again, what they saw on the Debate Stage on Tuesday Night, right . A very clear choice in this election and if it happens or if trump agreed to make it happen. We are discussing between now and the election we bring that same Split Screen to the voters where they are on the ground and on the airwaves, we will make sure every day between now and November 5th they understand the very clear choice in this election between the Voice President who is fighting for them, going to stand up and provide economy where people have the opportunity to get ahead instead of just get by. Contrast that with trumps disastrous economics. Make sure they understand Donald Trump is responsible for the horror playing out with Trump Abortion bans across this country and she is the leader that can get us out of this mess and restore roe. She will make sure on every issue the american people understand their choice in this election. I want to go back to a lot of that. But, just because you opened the door to maybe this not being a firm no on a second debate with trump are you guys still negotiating with the Trump Campaign on the terms of the debate or have they ended . No, listen we are open to having conversations about a second debate. We think the american people deserve to see that. We, we had a clear choice on the stage on Tuesday Night and we think that if Donald Trump is willing to do so, they should have another opportunity to do that. We areepter training it. Having coverings, we very much look forward to Debating Trump again in the month of october. We think that the american people deserve to see that before everybody has the opportunity to cast their ballots on November 5th. You bring up the Abortion Ad that we just played on the air. I wonder if you can talk a little bit about how the campaign is seeing the issue in terms of Driving Turnout and also, what you have been hearing from constituents about the things that trump said on that stage on Tuesday Night. Yeah. I think what a lot of voters heard Trump Say was that, what he has been saying at the maga rallies for months. Had not said it in front of a mainstream audience, a guy that takes credit for the role he played in overturning roe v. Wade. Playing a majority of the justices with roe, somebody that takes credit for these Trump Abortion bans that are playing out in 20 states across the country. The impact it is having beyond abortion, right in the threat that we have for Fertility Treatments in alabama, it is starting today and what they saw on the other side was, the Voice President who made very, very clear, a, who is responsible in Donald Trump. And, be, how do we get out of this. Restoring row. So women can make their own choices, fundamental issue of freedom in america. What we are hearing and seeing from voters across the country. This is not partisan. You see women and americans across the country understanding this. Our dials for example that we were running during the debate. This is a powerful moment. So, it is going to continue to be a resident issue with the voters and make sure they saw, that they continue to see the exchange that took place on the Debate Stage on tuesday. I am sure you are. Now, let me ask you, two events of North Carolina, people are scratching their heads and i am sure there are democrats out there worried about a more ambitious map, what do you say to people who are weary going beyond the Blue Wall States and having not one but two events in North Carolina. No, listen we have been clear about our path to victory from the beginning of this campaign. Inclusive of the Blue Wall States, michigan, pennsylvania, it is inclusive for the Sun Belt states, out west, nevada, arizona, southeast. Georgia, North Carolina. That is why i think the Vice President s travel coming off of the debate is reflective of that. In charlotte, greensboro and when we are going to the Battleground States we make sure we touch every part of the state, right . Tomorrow, we are not simply spending time in philadelphia and pittsburgh which we travel to often and will continue to do so. We are making sure we are tapping into other parts of the state. The democrats have not campaigned in. Same thing on the bus tour. We are proud it is the first democratic campaign in 30 years since Bill Clinton to campaign. We are going to do more of that tomorrow. Keep doing it in the weeks to come because this is, this is a margin of error race. That was the case before the debate. Thatll be the case after the debate. For us, margin of error is margin of effort. You will see harris, walz, kicking into high gear to communicate with every voter that will determine the pathway to the votes. Margin of error being turned into margin of effort. Okay. Michael tyler, Communications Director for the Harris Walz Campaign, thank you for your time, appreciate it thanks for having me. We got a lot more Coming Up tonight. Including the one issue that could decide the election according to the Polling Expert . Stay tuned to find out what it is. [ cheers and applause ] Hard Work is good work. [ cheers and applause ] that was Vice PresidentKamala Harris in North Carolina today. Riding that momentum but reminding voters it will be a close race with a lot of work to be done. The Harris Walz Campaign schedule on that note is packed. The selfproclaimed underdogs have appearances planned in pennsylvania, grand rapids, michigan, wisconsin, i am hoping i am saying that right and that just takes us through saturday. Joining me now, former Campaign Managers for Bernie Sanders 2020 president ial Campaign And Ben chair of democratic party of wisconsin. Is it wausau, wisconsin . And i have family in wisconsin, too. I love to get both of your thoughts on these three issues that are emerging as Strategy Points and what your thoughts are the first is this idea that Kamala Harris represents a candidate of change. There is an ad that they took out, came out yesterday night. It is basically contrasting Donald Trump as someone is preoccupied with an america of your dark vision, a retrograde Vision And Harris as this sort of avatar of a new tomorrow. It is a hard case to make when you are the incumbent Vice President that you are a candidate of change. But, you know, the ad is convincing, i am wondering how much of an uphill climb that is for her . I think it is very clear, in fact. And i think that moment in the debate where she said i am not joe biden, i am obviously not Donald Trump but i can offer now generation of leadership. It was saying what was obvious when you looked at the stage. Someone pointed out it has been since 1976 that we have not had a president ial election that did not have a clinton, a biden, or a bush or a trump on the ballot. Or just clinton, biden, bush. It is wild to see how that cast of characters of American Politics has been for a long time. Harris is new in that bigger sense. Not new just relative to the last few years but to the last generation, the whole history of the country and she is bringing a new energy and a new kind of, a new joy, that does feel materially different. It was a choice between, you know, sort of sense of Dread And Disaster both sides describing how awful it will be on the other side for years now, 2016 and 2020, now a Role Sense of just a relief and laughing and dancing and it is a new day. It is genuinely a new day. Wisconsins meto is forward. Very on brand for your state what do you think of the idea that harris is once tauting the achievements of the Biden Presidency and administration which she is part of and suggesting she is the pageturner in american history. Her candidacy is in Gender And Race but in terms of politics do you think it is a hard hill to chime . Reporter first of all i am speaking to you in wisconsin, meeting some of the wonderful staff and talking to local unions here about the issues that are concerning to them. I agree with everything that you are saying with the newness and how it works to her advantage. Harris rather than trump. I think she is well positioned and, you know, Hillary Clinton in this point of the race of similarly pulling at a strong position, to harrispoint, underdog, Hard Work ahead for the late deciders, the newness that you have Opinion Referencing is an Advantage And Suggestion of the Hard Work that needs to be done because it means somebody who is knew you need to kind of affirm for people who know less about you what are your thoughts, what drives you . Why do you want the power . Why do you want the Governments Authority in your hands what do you want to do with it . For me, and a lot of people running around here facing economic issues they are really at the top of mind. What i see is exploitation of big government over workers, consumers, i want businesses to thrive and profits but i want an economy working for people f. She can get it across in the last few days i think we got this. She is certainly, you know, she, i think her rockiest answer was when she was talking about the economy, she clearly has a story to tell about her up bringing and she understands the concerns of you, the voters but she is not, she is not just, if the economy is the single most important issue in this race there are playing a multipronged strategy. Something that the campaign is doing around Foreign Policy that i think is super interesting. They are using the war in ukraine to speak with undecided voters who may have Eastern European roots, she talked about it in the debate. If putin runs over europe will matter to the 800,000 polish people. They are Running Ads on that and Running Ads in pennsylvania and wisconsin and michigan as well. Do you think that could be a successful strategy getting people interested and excited . I think it is onepiece of the strategy for sure. I think that is right, especially for a lot of voters who are cynical about politics they know how much they are paying for groceries and they want a government that is on the side of working people and against Price Gougers and against the bosses that are trying not to pay overtime and fire people trying to form unions, with Foreign Policy they want they dont want a government that is letting the country where they came from Get Overrun by russia. My own family, outside of ukraine, and has been under man flags at different times and there are so many people in wisconsin, polish wisconsinites. Biden won by a few votes, you dont need a huge Community But Something that connecting the way reproductive freedom does. This is profound for people who feel a connection to the countries their families immigrated from. And, trump is just manifesting on the wrong side when it comes to the question of if you should allow russia to invade and occupy other countries. You know, the nature of this campaign, every choice is a very specific choice that they make. They are talking about change, they are talking about abortion, they are talking about ukraine in a way that is resinating with the undecided voters they need to get to. Just from a campaign perspective, how much, how much targeted information do you think that they possess and are ready to deploy to get to these literally tens ever thousands of voters that will decide the election . That is a better question for ben. I sat and talked to his organizers in the state and each one of them will hand you a walk packet. In it you will know a lot about the demographics, income levels, how people voted in the past issues of concern for them. There is that level of knowledge but not just in michigan, pennsylvania but all of the key battlegrounds and all of the offices, they know what they are doing. And i think, though, while you can do walk and chew gum at the same time, microtargetting of ads and pieces of content, here is a one pager for you on ukraine. That helps, but i want to pull us back and say not the whole election can be won by micro. You need a macr of what matters to you and brings the widest number of people in the campaign . I dont want to lose sight of getting so microyou are not talking about the number one thing for Plane Voter that is where i am focused on. Man, the amount of concerns that i am hearing over and over. Not just economic story but what are your values, for harris, too, drive a contrast. He loves musk and he loves billionaires and execute a government on their behalf. Oil billionaires, here this is who i am, this is who i fight for and seeing the passion come out on this issue like it is on abortion it would be grates yes. Certainly. Ben, quickly, there are a wash of money in the Harris Campaign. How much does Money Matter at this point . Or is it more a matter of, you know, the foot soldiers getting throughout and knocking on doors . It is an all the above moment. I want to stress though it is worth donating directly to the Harris Campaign and down ballot democrats, if you support the Wisconsin Assembly and state democrats, one seat in each chamber. One seat to break the super majority. Those races are starved for funds, so, it is, you know, worth supporting the top of the ticket and accept at and house and others. All of that work and using those funds to make sure we reach the voters who are paying the least attention to politics who did not watch the debate. It is when we connect with those folks and them about the things they are facing in their own live that is when we win it. Even win It Boy more of the fraction of a percent that so many of them come down to a fraction of a percent. No one is looking forward to another one of to those we will take if we get it. Turning a margin of error into a margin of effort. I think i probably heard it somewhere. It is so good but i say it all of the time. I like how he talked about it. Margin of effort, margin of effort. Lets put in the work. Thank you both for your time and expertise, really, really appreciate your time. Still to come this evening, the department of Homeland Security is focused on January 6th, 2025. We will have more on the planning of the next January 6th, Coming Up. And in the 2022 midterms democrates exceeded democrats exceeded them. And what are they saying now . Harris holds a small lead in wisconsin, michigan, North Carolina, pennsylvania, Nevada And Georgia and arizona. Now, Kamala Harris is tied with trump in nevada, georgia and arizona. Joining me now is Polling Editor for the New York Times whose primary responsibility is working on the largest and important polls in the country. The New York Times poll. I was saying to you in the break you must be the most popular and least popular person in your Circle Of Friends depends on the findings. First of all, prepare us all here. The, the scuttlebutt in polling it is this election will be tighter than 2020. Let me remind everybody at home Donald Trump won in 2016 thanks to 77,744 votes in three states. In 2020, biden won thanks to 81,000 approximately votes across four states. Are we looking at tighter numbers . Much tighter yes. It will be a tight race tighter than 81,000 votes in four states yes. That is terrifying. Can we talk a little bit about what that practically means. When you are talking about undecided voters are there truism what they look like along the Battleground States this year, yes. Compared to historic, the group is different, there is a truism across states this year that is we are talking about younger voters, nonwhite voters, black voters and latino voter that is consistent and what, is it generally on people not hearing those issues and the ins and outs of the political circle and voters not as engaged as sort of polarized voters, caring deeply about the economy. The economy it is Issue Number one above everything else. What does that mean when you say the economy. To those voters is it taxes . Inflation . Is it wages and inflation, i think it depends, inflation is the big thing. People are feeling that burn at the grocery store, the Gas Pump and they really want a candidate to answer that for them. Can you talk to me a little bit. A. Joe biden is running ahead of trump by 5 points, today, this day in the year 2024, the present, harris is ahead by one point. What does that mean . How many votes is that if we are talking about . If it was so close at five Point Spread, a 1 Point Spread it is like a handful. It is counties that matter and a handful of votes in the counties. Slim, the pool of undecided voters is smaller than in the past. Does that mean you reach them because these voters are people that are not paying attention, i know it is a huge brood question. But, is the way to reach them, i will not ask, are they paying attention . Is wordofmouth matter with an undecided voter . It is hard to know, right . They are younger we are seeing more on social media, but it is just friends and wordofmouth. That is often how politics get done. People talking to their friends and see who their friends are supporting. How good are the polls . I know you have a vested interest in them being good and you are the, you know, Gold Standard here. But, has the predictions gotten better . Not the predictions but the snapshots in time . Yes. Thank you, i appreciate that. Not predictions have they gotten more accurate. Every year we do everything we can and we have done a lot of work to try to improve on, you know, issues we had in previous years but there is a lot of reason that the polls are pretty accurate. In 2022, i know you were talking about the polls being off. But for us, we are nearly exactly accurate one or two points between each poll. We hope we are reaching everybody. On the other hand i will say, polls are kind of a big Blunt Instrument that are not great at figuring out this narrow margin. You know, polls are great at telling us 60 or 70 of americans support abortion, polls are great at tells us these Brood Brush issues, on the tight races in the states that are divided by, you know, a handful of votes polls are not necessarily perfect at that. The best thing we have and we do our best with them. That is a limitation that we struggle with. I would assume that accounts for, how they have not moved. The Big 10 events and you are not seeing the big shift. It is not a battle for inches but milimeters. The most popular person, the least popular person, we dont know. We dont know what you will be in your Circle Of Friends but appreciate you being here tonight thank you for having me. Today the department of Homeland Security designated the certification of national votes a special Security Event. That means a routine but of Congressional Business is now going to have the same level of secret Service Protection as president Ial Inaugurations of the super bowl. Here is how House SpeakerMike Johnson responded to that news. Reporter what you think of January 6 being desiccated now as a national Security Event. Do you think thats necessary . I didnt even hear that happened. Reporter dhs designated it a national Security Event. Sounds like politics to me. Joining now is susan glasser, Staff Writer at the new yorker. Susan, i know you know this but Mike Johnson was one of the ringleaders of the 2020 January 6th plot. Mark elias calls him other than former President Trump, arguably the most culpable federal elected official in what transpired that day. What do you make of his reaction to designating the certification and national Security Event . You know, it was really striking to hear him say i think it sounds like politics, because of course it was trump and his allies on Capitol Hill such as carson johnson, who turned an event like that into politics. That is really a ministerial, constitutional function of the government and you know, it is really so striking because we are once again four years later in an election in which the candidate for president of the united states from the Republican Party is already attacking and undermining the basis on which the election will occur, saying that theyre going to be questions about it, that is going to be fraudulent, that its going to be unfair and of course calling on his allies on Capitol Hill to support him in whatever claims he makes. Imagine calling an election rigged before it has even taken place. That is the situation that we find ourselves in again. I dont know if it will be January 6 or some other way in which trump chooses to attack or undermine the legitimacy of the election if he loses again but i think theres a very real basis for those concerns. If you are paying attention to the signals being given weather by the department of Homeland Security or by the attorney general, i feel like a normal person thinks im a little worried about what happens this election season. Today, Merrick Garland, not known to be a public alarmist, gave really unusual remarks to department of Justice Staff Today for he called out attacks on prosecutors and doj personnel and talked about Conspiracy Theories and just warn the public and obviously staff that this was very dangerous, and the environment was very threatening to the integrity of the safety of the Department Of Justice and its employees. He did not name trump by name but i mean, it is very unusual to have somebody like Merrick Garland saying that 54 days before an election. There is no question, of course, this is something we have not really seen before. Mike garland is a very cautious official not given to inflammatory statements. I thought that speech was quite remarkable and very consistent with trump being very clear about wanting to use essentially to attack the institution set up to safeguard the democracy. I was very struck it did not get as much attention probably understandably, given all the incoherent and inflammatory Things Trump said in that debate the other night but i will point out that he was asked about January 6. He was asked about his election lies and chose to double down on them in the debate the other night. He said not only that the election had been rigged and stolen from him but that he continues to say that he is going to pardon the January 6th insurrectionist and he calls them, as you know, repeatedly in his rallies, he calls them essentially martyrs to the cause of Donald Trump and that is the side he has taken on. I noticed that Kamala Harris made a point of saying how many Police Officers were injured on January 6, 2021 and pointing out the Donald Trump claims to be someone who backs law enforcement, who is anticrime, but i think that in this election season, we are going to see more and more escalation the closer it gets to the election itself because trump is actively engaged in the campaign of undermining the legitimacy of an election that he might lose again. Yeah, he is already saying today on the campaign trail, i think we are going to win very big and is long as its an honest election i will accept the results. The upshot is that he is not in the presidency right now. The downside is that Mike Johnson is now the speaker of the house. Susan glasser, always good to see you. Thanks for your time tonight. Still ahead this evening, Donald Trump and Jd Vance are enjoying spreading the Big Lie about cats, but it is coming at a real cost in the town of springfield, ohio where haitian migrants say they now fear for their lives. Migrants are walking off with the towns geese. They are taking the geese and even walking off with their pets. My dog has been taken. My dogs been stolen. If we have to meme about it to get the media to care we are going to keep on doing it. We, Jd Vance and Donald Trump has engaged in the joyful bigotry pushing the line that haitian immigrants living in Springfield Ohio are eating cats, dogs and geese. They have spent the week maiming meming for proof. This is causing real harm is racism often does. Today the Police Springfield Department reported multiple Bomb Threats and prompted evacuations of City And School buildings and many haitians in springfield city now fear for their lives. Joining me now is the nbc News Washington Correspondent just back from springfield where she spoke to immigrants about the lies republicans are spreading about them. Thanks for joining me. What are they saying to you . Haitian immigrants really are heartbroken and shocked about what is going on. I spoke to one haitian man who immigrated just a few months ago. He was too scared to go on camera but he told me that really he is Feeling Retraumatized because he already left haiti, fleeing Gang Violence and insecurity. He didnt want to leave but he had to leave he felt like and then he came legally to springfield, ohio and is now working a Construction Job and his coworkers are now repeatedly asking him if he eats cats and he told me he feels depressed pretty feel so sad about the situation and has some friends telling him that they might leave springfield and leave the idea of The American Dream there were hoping to live here so it really is very heartbreaking in a tough situation and the tension there was so palpable. Did they have a response to trump, who is on this, continues to do it, keeps talking about the effect that there is no basis in truth. Did they have words for Donald Trump . Yes, a number of haitian immigrants told me they see Trump And Vance is really pushing racist and xenophobic language toward them, these baseless claims, these unfounded allegations they see them really is putting their lives at risk with some people not wanting to leave their houses. I talked to one woman who kept their children home from school because she was too worried they may be targeted. They see them really is people who are trying to do harm to haitian immigrants. One person told me he sees this as the continuation of a long line of attacks because former President Trump said years ago that haitians were bringing Hiv Aids to this country which of course is a false claim. They also have called Haiti And Country so they are continuing to be down haitians and have done that to a number of other immigrants. They think there might be a political population here in the might be trying to get other people in ohio to believe this. I spoke to one man who saw through these baseless claims as credible and he told me he feels like springfield is going to be lost because it will be overrun in his mind with patience and there are some who say maybe it will be a haitian community like there are irish communities, german communities, but he is said he is hoping that other communities are watching and that they stop haitians and other immigrants from coming to their town so theres also this idea there helping many people in Pennsylvania And Michigan feel mobilized by these baseless claims that it helps Donald Trump be elected. I would assume just from some of the videos that i have seen, that the community around the haitians is incensed also about the lies that are being spread about springfield. Did you get a sense of that while you were there . I got a very clear sense of that. I talked to a number of people who werent haitian immigrants, longtime residents of springfield, ohio who said they were welcoming to haitian immigrants because when they were coming there and are coming there legally, there were Pogroms Targeting Immigrants FeelingFleeing Violence but also springfield for years is losing its population. Businesses were closing and now theyve seen this revitalization and the people who want to haitian immigrants there say that is part of the reason why they wanted that in the city actually advertised new Manufacturing Jobs and advertise springfield as an affordable place to live which is why they were trying to welcome these haitian immigrants so they were all actually enticed to come there and they are also confused because this thing about Pet Abuse all seems to have started because of an unrelated case in a different part of ohio involving a u. S. Citizen who was arrested over a gruesome incident involving
