Meanwhile, one of trumps most egregious lies from the debate is now forcing the city of springfield, ohio, to reassure americans that migrants there are not eating pets. We have a lot to get to this morning, and well begin with Donald Trumps Debate Performance, and its frustrating some of his fellow republicans. Thats the headline from the Wall Street Journal following his debate to see night with Vice President Kamala Harris in philadelphia. The paper states this, gop lawmakers and others fretted that trump had missed chances to challenge harris on her record and instead let his own controversies become the bigger story as Harris Needling got under his skin. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of south carolina, a staunch ally of trump, called the debate a missed opportunity. And republican Senator Kevin Cramer of north dakota, said, quote, he treated if like a minirally in a lot of respects. Youve got to be talking to swing voters in Swing States. He could do that better with details. Were also now getting new reaction from inside the Trump Camp with one advisor to the former president telling Nbc News it was not his best performance without question. And a longtime republican operative said i know everyone in the world has said this, but the Inability Or Unwillingness to realize when hes being baited and not fall for it is constantly baffling. At the same time democratic congressman Jared Mosquewits of florida poked fun at trumps Debate Performance saying it might be time to have those difficult conversation about whether to proceed or drop out of the race. The former president is also claiming now he won the debate against Vice President harris and perhaps does not need to participate in a second one. Trump has been relentlessly criticizing Abc News and its moderators claiming he was not just debating harris but also the two journalists hosting the event. And despite preechbsly claiming multiple times he would do a second debate with harris, trump is now hedging on that idea. You know, when you win, you dont necessarily have to do it a second time, so well see. But i thought we had a great debate last night. When you dont win, its like a fighter. As a fighter when a bad fight gets knocked or loses the fight, the first thing he says we want a rematch. So we won the debate according to every poll, every single poll. Are we going to do a rematch, i just dont know. Meanwhile, there are reports that Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to begin a more aggressive phase on the Campaign Trail in order to build momentum from that debate. Harris is Hiing The Road visiting key Battleground States as part of what the campaign as deeming its new way forward tour. Harris will hold backtoback Rallies Today in charlotte and greensborough, North Carolina, followed by events on friday in pennsylvania. The campaign is also reportedly preparing to release a slew of ads featuring key moments from the debate and planning more interviews with local media in key Swing States in efforts to reach voters in those battlegrounds. Meanwhile, her running mate, governor tim walz, will be hitting the Rust Belt making campaign Stops Today and tomorrow in michigan and then traveling to wisconsin for an event on friday followed by a rally on saturday at the university of wisconsin superior. You can tell the Harris Campaign feels good about the other night. Yesterday on Social Media they posted, heres a look at our new Campaign Ad and simply put up a video of the debate in its entirety. So they feel theyve got momentum. Tell us more what youve been hearing and your reporting has told you about how they plan to be more aggressive and capitalize in the next days or weeks. Well, john, it starts of course with the tours you mentioned. And were watching now as the time ticks down where theyre going and continues to signal they believe North Carolina is truly in play and a pretty Eye Opening Governors Race there giving democrats a bit of a tail wind, and i think well continue to see Vice President harris in pennsylvania as much as they can squeeze her in there basically. So those two in georgia really seem to be part of a Narrowing Map or at least part of the ongoing fight that biden had not had as much competition in all seven states. I dont want to be too rude to the current president , as it were, john. We dont like being rude. And media interviews are also telling the campaign is touting. It looks like this will include local media. Theres been a lot of discourse and shes done more local or constituency and looks like theyll continue to do that including a conversation next week with the Association Of Black Journalists for the campaign. Until now she sort of borrowed from the Biden Campaign Strategy of not really doing press, going around the traditional mainstream media to get their message out. So it looks like theyre sort of opening that as well. Maybe she missed an opportunity to fill in the gap. There are voters who want to know more about her and about her policy. Maybe a more aggressive schedule will help with that. Some real frustration amongst republicans. I know you have a new piece from Bloomberg News about just that. Whats the concern from the gop, and what adjustments may come from the Trump Camp . Well, the fact theyre backtracking on this strategy of demanding debates is i think telling, of course. When it was biden on the Ticket Trump was saying anytime, anyplace. As you know, john, he used the Prize Fighter Analogy and football analogy. When you lose the Super Bowl you usually try to win another Super Bowl. So this notion you would walk away because you think you won the debate, doesnt hold a lot of water. Right now i think its just up in the air. Harris is The One writing a Blank Check now on debate schedules. Tables have flipped completely on that. Were watching to see whether shes going to get a bounce in the polls or trump continues to see this sort of leveling off. His camp was sort of enthused the sort of Postnomination Bump Harris has had in particular around the dnc has leveled off. Things are sort of getting back to normal and settling in a place where trump has a dead heat or even a bit of an edge in a national vote, let alone in those key Battleground States. Harris is thought to win the vote by a fair margin to speak to the electoral college. That is i think giving them confidence right now things are leveling off, entering a new phase, and theyre back to a more traditional Campaign Hitting of course over a couple of core issues in particular, inflation and the border. Yeah, itll take a few days, maybe a week or so what bump she may have gotten from the debate. Lastly and briefly youve got a new piece with the Headline Biden is urged to reconsider 14 Billion u. S. Steel takeover. Tell us a little bit about this issue, which also has major electoral considerations considering the state involved. Yeah, it is swirling, john. This is around the takeover of u. S. Steel by a japanese company. Japan, of course, an ally country. And theres been a controversy. Harris, biden, and trump all oppose the takeover. Union leadership hate the deal but they themselves like it, and theyre saying they worry that biden killing this deal is going to risk throwing the baby out with the bathwater and give up on investment that will otherwise try to turn things around. This is, of course, Concentrated In Pennsylvania and Western Pennsylvania in particular. You Cant Picture a more crucial battleground than this, and biden has been so strong at opposing it, there are signs the politics are a little more mixed, might not get a full boost in terms of siding with the union, but it looks like hes calculating get it, although its a little unclear. Where it stands now it feels like the clock is ticking down. Theyve not exclusively said when the deadline is, but biden might have to make a decision on this before the election. And so theres a lot of intrigue to this one. Trump, of course, calling on him to do it. But the politics on it are messy and over the election such a crucial battleground. Such an intriguing subplot there in pennsylvania and you mention the idea going to repeat Super Bowl championships. Hear his comment now as well as what the City Manager of springfield, ohio, and the States Governor had to say about it. And look at whats happening to the towns all over the united states. And a lot of towns dont want to talk not going to be aurora or springfield. A lot of towns dont want to talk about it because theyre so embarrassed by it. In springfield theyre eating the dogs. The people that came in, theyre eating the cats. Theyre eating the pets of the people that live there. And this is whats happening in our country. And its a shame. I just want to clarify here, you bring up springfield, ohio, and Abc News did reach out to the City Manager there. He told us there had been no credible reports of specific claims of pets being harmed, injured, or abused by individuals within the immigrant community. Ive seen people on television the people on television say my dog was taken and used for food. So maybe he said that, and maybe thats a good thing to say for a City Manager. Im not just taking this from television. Im taking this from the City Manager. A dog was eaten by the people that went there. Again twrsh the springfield City Manager says theres no evidence of that. Springfield is a dynamic community with many positive attributes. It is disappointing that some of the narratives surrounding our city has been skewed by misinformation circulating on Social Media and further amplified by political rhetoric in the current highly charged president ial election cycle. This is something that came up on the internet, and the internet can be quite crazy sometimes. And, look, the Mayor And Mayor roux of springfield says theres no truth in that, they have no evidence of that at all. So i think we go with what the mayor says. He knows his city. But trump told us himself sort of the anatomy of his own Conspiracy Theories and how he gets this via osmosis. He said i to watch this on tv and suddenly i believe it to be true. Why does he believe haitian immigrants are suddenly eating cats and dogs, because that is Confirmation Bias how he feels about immigrants, specifically those from haiti who hes already otherized and made subhuman when he was president. The difference now in 2016 and you could argue in 2020 with Covid And Vaccine skepticism, Donald Trumps Conspiracy Theories in the past have helped him. Now hes making himself a Walking Liability to his own campaign and his own base voters. Laura loomer is not reflective of the republican voters that he needs to win the election. Lexi, youre also following efforts by the other side of the Harriswalz Campaign to try to capitalize on some Social Media trends. And to this point, theyve done very well. Thats one example of a digital operation. A better example of sort of playing trumps own game against him is looking at their Social Media posts and the ways in which they are not holding back from trolling him like you and i would see anyone else do with a normal person online. Theyre doing it Every Single Day and with things they know hits him directly where it hurts like his Golfing Skills or where he says hes better looking than other people. They cite that as being one of his many lies in a new ad. Theyve been taking this page out of this sort of memeification of elections play Book Weve seen not just with Donald Trump. We saw this with John Fetterman in his Senate Race and his team, but looking fascinating look at democrats otherwise scare today engage online are stepping up and acting like normal people online, calling out the weirdness online. Stock futures rose overnight as investors prepare for more Inflation And Labor data. Give us as a sense as to whats driving the market. Good morning. The stocks closed in the green yesterday after a volatile session. And stocks initially tumbled of a crumbling of the Consumer Price Index distributing out the Consumer Price Index rose sightly more than expected and traders now saying that the fed might cut Interest Points by 25 Basis Points rather than 50 as they originally hoped. Well get a little more insight as you were saying into the u. S. Economy with August Producer Price Index and initial jobless claims released a little bit later today. So we have those final numbers there. Yeah, good point there. The expectation certainly the federal reserve will cut. Just by how much . So the european central Bank Today there its widely expected to deliver its own Rate Cut, about a quarter point. Tell us why that is, and do we think that will have any impact as to what could happen here in the states . Well, the European Central Bank already started cutting Interest Rates back in june. So that will be the second Rate Cut they make. Its widely expected to make an extra 25 Basis Point Cut today to 3. 5 . But investors will be trying to get some indication whats the path from now . Will there be further cuts . And also expecting some sticky Core Inflation but also some slow growth in the euro zone, particularly germany. So its a bit of a Balancing Act there for the ecb. And overall say rates will go down but wont give hits how fast and how long and well be waiting for more data. And lastly after 155 years the Campbells Soup Company is changing its name, why . In september you get that new me kind of feeling. They want to change their name and drop out soup from the name. It will be the Campbell Group and they say it will reflect their Widening Portfolio better. And they say soup will remain central to the strategy, but they also have other brands. To washington now where House Speaker Mike Johnson pulled a Government Funding bill off the House Floor just hours before it was set to be voted on yesterday. Johnsons move came as multiple house republicans vowed to tank the bill. The top two concerns with the gop defectors appear to be Defense Spending and attaching a proof of citizenship of Voting Provision to the bill. The latter, of course, is also a concern shared by former president Donald Trump, who called for his fellow republicans to kill the Funding Bill on tuesday if it did not contain that Voting Provision. Congress has roughly two weeks to pass Government Funding to avoid a shutdown. Joining us now democratic Congressman Gabe Amo of rhode island. Good to see you, congressman. Thanks for being here. Thanks for having me, johnman. Lets get your take on the possible shutdown. It would seem to be political malpractice to shutdown the government a month before election day, but republicans are at least flirting with it. Give us a sense what could happen, and remind our viewers, please, that noncitizens already cant vote. Look, you can tell this rhetoric around the basic function of keeping our government funded is part of a pattern. Its akin to the Fear Mongering we heard from the 45th president in the debate the other night. People who are not citizens cannot vote in this country. And to hold our countrys fundedness up to this brinksmanship again yet again in my short time as congress it seems like malpractice, but thats what it drives toward. And Speaker Johnson needs to see the light this is not the path Forward Interest the american people. Curious beyond just the nonsense about that bill but this sort of the republicans tenure here, controlling the house seems to be defined by these episodes of chaos. And the speaker whether it was mccarthy and now johnson unable to control his own party. Isnt that tumult, is that part of the democrats argument here on the Campaign Trail as you try to make the pitch to voters to put you in charge of the house . Without a doubt we need stability out of our government. We need to know that the basic services provided by our Government Wont be held hostage by the extremes of maga republicans. And, frankly, the leadership of the house has not demonstrated that they can be silver minded about the necessary actions that they need to take forward in order to make sure that america moves forward. So you mentioned this weeks debate. Vice president harris widely perceived to have gotten the best of Donald Trump. You know, and now she looks to head back on the Campaign Trail. What more do you want to see from her . What things do you think your constituents and voters around the country still want to learn about the Vice President . Well, look, the Vice President dominating performance over former President Trump. What she needs to do, frankly, is more of the same. Present the contrast of vision versus chaos. And as we saw, she articulated the plan to support working families, small business, to support homeownership, investments in the american people. Really articulating the message that shes going to be a president for all americans. As we see that, it is demonstrably clear we cannot go backwards. That is what will propel her into victory this november. But we have to stay focused on the specifics and the plans, not concepts of plans, but plans for the american people. Joining us now, republican Strategist And Msnbc political Analyst Susan del percio. Good to see you this morning. Lets get your debate thoughts here. Youve had a day or so to sit with them. What do you think . There Mitt Romney goes again, telling the truth on television about what really happened on the Debate Stage as a republican. I think its clear. Harris won because she got underneath trumps skin. No doubt about it. She should have probably flushed out some of her plans, but she came there to show she could go toetotoe with the president. She was very president ial looking, and she did the job. Job done. Especially there are two Points Id like to highlight. One, when she walked out for that handshake, the fact that she got into the former president s face, the podium space, i think really knocked him off. And while we are all familiar with the big digs about crowd size, The One she made about the professors at wharton saying the economy would do worse under Donald Trump, it really got to him. You could see it in his facial expressions. Though the rest of the american audience may not have seen it, he was proud to say he transferred into the Wharton School of business. Harris knew what she was doing. One beat on romney. Liz cheney, she and her father both said were voting for harris. The former congresswoman said, its not enough to say we dont support trump, but take the next step and say, im voting for harris. Looking at, perhaps, former President Bush among them. What do you think . I think former President Bush is a great example. Even though he said he wont be endorsing, im not so sure, come only two to four weeks, that maybe he changes his mind. But republicans, i understand why some choose not to. As far as elected officials who can afford a security detail, that makes sense. But when you do that and you go after former President Trump, there is a Security Issue for your family that is very serious. You know, you dont want your kids getting taunted at school, for example, by strangers coming up. Thats what happens with trump fanatics. So i understand the reservation, and maybe they do it two weeks out, not eight. We played earlier in the show, Trump Sort of all over the map as to whether or not hell do another debate with Vice President harris. The Harris Team said, hey, were in. Pick a date. Think well get another debate . I dont think so. Actually, i dont think it works well for either side. Harris did everything she had to do in that first debate. Shes not going to really go much further. He will prepare, trump, if she faces him, a little better. Trump really cant afford for her to eviscerate him one more time. There was some polling resurfaced yesterday in terms of judging how trump did in his debate, and he seemed to improve each cycle. His second and third debates against Hillary Clinton were better than the first. Second debate against now president biden better than the first, and so on. You mentioned at the top of this that Vice President harris, like The One thing she perhaps could have done more of the other night was flush out her policy positions more. Other democrats have said that, too. So that is something probably she needs to do in the days and weeks ahead through interviews and such. What else does she need to do . How else can she build off this momentum . Keep doing what shes doing. Right now, she didnt have a marathon. She had to run this as a sprint. Shes running this race today, eight weeks out, as if it was eight days out. Shes got to go to the Swing States. Shes got to keep on appealing to the crowds. And i think it at this point, she can do some more create i things as far as getting her platform out there. You know, these days, what we see on television and ads are not what everyone else is seeing because theyre so targeted. I think the campaign is moving well. I dont think she should do too many big interviews. As much as i want it as an american, as a practitioner of campaigns, she probably shouldnt do it. Last question on the Host State from the debate, pennsylvania. Polls show a real tie. Also, democrats, though, are a little worried about the Vice President s strength in the state, particularly with older, white voters. Hence the use of president bide therein. Its not impossible but hard for harris to win the White House without pennsylvania. Whats the latest youve heard . There is an issue there. Shes also having an issue when it comes to labor in pennsylvania, especially with the u. S. Steel sale, potential sale, that biden, harris, and trump have all come out against. But the Rank And File labor members really do want to see this go through. Theres a little bit of push and pull there. I think, frankly, when it comes to pennsylvania, shes also going to have to turn out her surrogates and use them well. Particularly the governor of that state. Yes.
