Into Tonights Debate, showing this race remains as close as can be. And what do voters want or need to hear from the stage . The effort to reach that slim group of undecided americans. Good morning. It is 10 00 eastern, 7 00 a. M. Pacific. Im Ana Cabrera joined by my Colleague And Friend chris jansing, reporting from philadelphia today, ahead of tonights pivotal debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. It is so great to be sitting next to you on this enormously important day in politics. Can we take another look at The Room . Where were sitting has a couple of purposes. One, it is the file room, which is an old phrase they use where people used to file their stories. Those chairs will all be full tonight with members of the media, who will be watching the debate from here, because, remember, there is no audience. So there will not even be members of nbc team, other teams, other many Media Teams there. But in the middle, thats where the Spin Room is going to be and each side will have surrogates who will be out there, trying to each say my person won the debate tonight. People like Running Mate jd vance, i believe, is going to be there for donald Trump And Rfk jr. Among many others. Look, it has been 75 days of unprecedented political upheaval, ever since the last debate that ultimately led to a seismic shift in this race. Now Harris And Trump will meet for the first time in this high Stakes Showdown of their contrasting styles and visions for america. Trump is a known political quantity. Fueled by grievance, seeking to convince voters he deserves another four years in office. Harris, not so familiar to an awful lot of voters. Shes offering optimism while promising to prosecute the case against the Trump Agenda and this could be the last major national Audience Either Candidate gets before Election Day because no second debate is confirmed. We now have the first look at that Debate Stage. Shared by Abc News and it is fitting, this is happening in pennsylvania, a battleground that could decide this election. And nbcs monica Alba And Garrett haake are here covering the campaigns, also with us, former Pennsylvania Gop Congressman Charlie Dent and msnbc political Analyst And Princeton professor eddie glaude. You just got off the phone with President Trump. Hes in a good mood about this debate. We talked about the challenges of preparing for it. He told me what he thinks is the hardest thing about debating Kamala Harris is her positions have changed so much, especially going back to when she was running for president 20192020. You dont know what to prepare for, what positions she might or might not take on the stage. I asked him does that make it more challenging, what do you do . He said he believes it makes it so voters wont believe her, wont trust her. The republicans are in his ear and say hes not going to focus on the idea she changed positions or a flipflopper, instead hell try to attack her for whatever the most liberal position shes taken on any issue is, she will try to make her own that position and essentially the point youre making about how shes a little bit less defined, voters dont know as much about her, he will try to define her in the most liberal way possible. Thats their plan. As always with Donald Trump, though, whether he sticks to it or not when the lights come on the stage is a separate question. Youre describing a man who is different than what we have been talking about for the last month, somebody who has been watching Kamala Harris surge in the polls, getting all the headlines, and incredible amounts of money raised. What turned it for him or has he turned . Well, look, i always say this about Donald Trump, he didnt change but he does focus. They got closer to the debate day, hes dialled in a little bit more. They had some favorable polls, public polls and public modeling over the weekend that New York Times Senna Poll which showed him with a margin of error lead, some public forecasting that take what you will of the models, but shows him with a greater chance of winning. Based on the people ive talked to, thats calmed his nerves a little bit. And i think helped resume the trust that he has had until now or until the Harris Surge with his team that what theyre telling him will work if he executes on it. So, congressman dent, your thoughts on trumps approach, that were hearing about tonight . I think hes smart not to focus on flipflopping because, you know this is a guy who has unfixed policy positions and they shift constantly and hes flipflopped A Million times himself. Thats smart. The big thing hes got to do too is control himself. Is he going to question her ethnicity, for example, Thats Something he does not want to do, but to the extent that he makes her own issues, i would ask her, shes opposed to fracking, here we are in pennsylvania, make her explain her position and why she changed. Hes smart, hell do that. But, again, his problem is discipline. Hes undisciplined, you dont know whats going to come out of his mouth, hes going to say a lot of things, some may be true but you dont know whats going to come out. A focused trump is not the person we have seen over the course of the last month or so. We have also seen throughout his political history that sometimes in big moments he can suddenly decide that hes going to focus. What do you think . Who are we going to see tonight . I think well see a moment of contrast. Think about the visual. When the camera pans in, youll see the first woman of color, as a major Nominee And Youll see this Donald Trump, this old man, youll see that contrast, right . And then were going to hear differences. What do we think about the past and the future. So i think shes going to try to introduce herself to the country, and shes going to try to say, do you want to go back to this or do you want to imagine what we can do together moving forward . So i think were going to be she hasnt had to his strategy, that were hearing from garrett, can she really separate herself from some of the policies of the biden administration that he wants to criticize or maybe successfully criticize, including immigration and the economy . I dont think she needs to separate herself in some hard sense to draw a hard line between her and president biden, she wants to say, look, this is what she has to own some of the successes of the biden administration, and to talk about how shes going to take the nation forward, how shes going to take the nation in a not necessarily a different direction, but in the next phase, were going to shes going to pass the baton. The Trump Team agrees with you thats what she needs to do. They were telling Me One of the trump allies involved in his debate prep, if they were Kamala Harris it would be all future, all vision. The turn the Page Stuff works and thats what theyre expecting her to do tonight. Monica alba, what are you hearing from the Harris Team about the approach and Expectations Tonight . Reporter there have been extensive preparations over the last five days and it is no coincidence that they took place in the commonwealth of pennsylvania. The Vice President basically relocated to pittsburgh to do mock debates, to have these sessions with tv lighting, a full stage, a replica of what shes going to be encountering tonight and the scrutiny that she knows she is going to be under. For her, while she takes this very seriously, she is trying to set the expectations by saying that she believes that there is no floor for how low Donald Trump may go tonight. So trying to prepare for the possibility of derogatory comments, personal attacks, so im told they ran through all those kinds of scenarios in their prep in addition to all the policy, because she has laid out some of her proposals, but there is still a lot of gray area on where she stands on other issues, like you guys were just discussing, so, they did both of the substance and the style, but also what im watching for here tonight, guys, is the idea that because these two have never really met or come Face To face, there is this question of will there be a handshake, will they have any kind of inaction during the commercial breaks, what will that look like . Thats been part of the preparation and what they have been discussing as well. And this is somebody who, of course, did her own primary debates, as a senator, back in the 20192020 cycle and did a Vice President ial debate, but doesnt have anywhere near the experience that Donald Trump has had on the Debate Stage at this level. So, thats why youre also seeing the Harris Campaign Kind of talk about those expectations in terms of the rules, they continue to say theyre disappointed by the fact that the microphones are going to be muted when it is not the turn of the candidate to speak. They feel like thats not going to offer the american people the full portrait, the full view of who Donald Trump may be when he is more unfiltered. So watch for that to be something that they continue to signal, but really theyre trying to talk about this in terms of the contrast, in terms of the stark differing vision that shes going to present. But youre right, she is going to walk this fine line, were told, of praising her record in the biden harris administration, thats how she wants to tout some of her accomplishments, while at the same time saying here is how i would be different if i were elected to the White House in november. You know, guys, if theyre preparing for and a lot of democrats would want them to prepare for and there is reason to, ask the question how low can he go, is her worst Case Scenario that Donald Trump is something bordering on boring . Well, maybe. But, you know, thats okay. I think, you know, at that point, then it becomes a question of substance because if hes boring, we can focus on what is coming out of his mouth. I Cant Help but think about the symbolic significance of them being in the constitution center. I Cant Think of the symbolic significance of them being in the old city. Because we have been dealing with this, shall we say, tragic choice, what Donald Trump represents is in so many ways the ugly underbelly, in my view, of the country. And here we are in the place where the country was founded. And now were going to confront the choice between these two candidates and i think the burden of history is right here, right now. So, if hes boring, fine. If hes not, fine. Lets just deal with what history is calling us to do. To that point, theyre going to be in the constitution center, my only advice for both candidates is that nobody plays good defense in politics. It is all offense. And i think you need to go on the attack. I know some are going to say you want to project and be nice. At The End of the day, shes going to have to prosecute the case against him. Because you know he will against her. And i think she has to go Toe To toe with him and i get this idea of projecting, but she also has been stated she does have to contrast herself a little bit with Joe Biden. Who is the candidate of change here . Whether you like trump or not, hes a candidate of change and she has to make that case. I dont know if shell be able to do that and who is the incumbent in this race . Is it the Vice President . Or is it the former president . And this is a Change Election and that will be a big part of what voters will be weighing as they look at these candidates. Speaking of going on offense, the Harris Campaign just released a new Ad Taking on trump on Crowd Sizes. Lets watch. Heres a 78yearold Billionaire who has not stopped whining about his problems. Oh, she had a big crowd, oh, the crowd. This weird obsession with Crowd Sizes. It got some laughs here. Tonight, eddie, should the Vice President try to Needle Trump on stuff like Crowd Sizes or age or other things he may absolutely. Being a fake billionaire, being a convicted felon, of course. Why not . Bullies do not like it when people stand up to them, period. It is the question she has to answer or what the that she has to navigate, right, she cant then trigger certain assumptions about the mean woman, because the country is sexist, right . She has to be really, really careful in how she stands up to the bully, in light of the certain assumptions out there in the hinterlands as it were. To that point, i spent the Train Ride here, talking to the democratic party chair, four different states, two of them Battleground States and florida and north carolina. And they talked about their Door Knockers and what they were hearing from folks. And i think they were a little bit surprised by how little how many people how little people knew, many of them, about Kamala Harris and their real desire to know more about her and a comment that in a lot of these especially rural places where the democrats want to make inroads, they lost newspapers 10, 15 years ago, they dont have a trusted source of local news anymore. And theyre looking for answers, theyre looking for the truth, so, how much of what she has to do tonight, charlie, is about what she tells them, how much of it do you think is about how she tells them, how she reassures them that she is the person who can lead this country forward . She has a nice way about her, i think what she needs to do, though, is really speak to her deficiencies, like on the economy, and inflation. If i were Kamala Harris, i would be going after trump on those tariffs. We have an inflation problem. This guy is going to make it worse with his 10 across the board tariffs, cost All Of You, just keep, you know, playing to what are supposed to be his strengths and show why hes weak and why she has better solutions and why hes going to be a problem. She needs to do that. I cant emphasize enough how aggressive she needs to be, and, by The Way, mr. Trump, what is your position on Abortion Today . It flipped. We have whiplash on that one. She has got to be so i cant get over this, aggression matters here, she has to do it in a way that shes got a pleasing personality, i think. I think people tend to like her, hes kind of he can be very rude and abrupt, but she has got a nicer way. So she can do it in a way that is i think thoughtful, but shes got to be one of the criticisms of last time around with Joe Biden getting so much of the Post Date Debate attention, Donald Trump was able to go out and say all kinds of mistruths. We know Vice President Harris Has prepared for him to do a lot of lying, her campaign says, in this debate. But, eddie, does She Fact check him in real time. Is that going to be difficult for her to handle those lies . It is going to be shes going to be washed with untruths. She Cant Fact check every sentence. There he goes again, you know. To echo ronald reagan. She cant allow him to dictate the terms. She has to dictate the pace and the terms of the debate. She Cant Fight on his terrain, she has to move him on to her terrain and if hes on her terrain, she is going to do well tonight. Thanks so much for this discussion. Well see you back here again in just a moment. Still ahead, Kamala Harris is driving the headlines, shes racking up huge campaign cash. So why are the polls so close . More on what is keeping democrats up at night. Plus, well talk to a former aide to Kamala Harris about what is likely the biggest moment of her political life. And were getting a pulse of the people. Welcome back to our Special Coverage of the first president ial debate between Vice President harris and former President Trump. Both of them focusing on that Narrowing Pool of undecided voters in swing states. With 56 days to go, how can this one Night Help those voters make up their minds . Nbcs Shaquille Brewster is joining us from ada, a Swing County in michigan. And, shaq, you are there in Kent County specifically, which voted republican, flipped for biden in 2020, what are you hearing from voters . Reporter im finding a lot of voters that fit that trend. Were in a town where trump won by about 14 percentage points in 2016, but only 2 percentage points in 2020. It is that erosion that we see in the suburbs and the area where there is a college educated population, high college educated population, and based on the conversations ive been having with folks here at this formers market, im picking up on one, people are excited for this debate. They plan to be watching, theyre going to be watching extremely closely, but, two, especially among those who are undecided or just leaning one way or the other, it seems as if a lot of the pressure, a lot of the attention will be on Vice President harris. Listen to some of those conversations. So, when it was biden and trump, you were thinking of not voting at all. Not voting at all or going independent. And now with it being Harris And Trump im leaning into voting, but still very much still deciding as to whom. To me it is going to be like a slugfest. You voted for trump in the past but it sounds like Vice President Harris Has the ability to win your Vote Tonight . Yeah, she needs to act. I want to feel like she is she would be a good leader. Reporter the issues that continue to come up with folks here are the main issue is the economy. They want specifics on the economy. And, by The Way, i talked to one woman, just a couple of minutes ago, who said that she is a huge trump supporter, but she said she wants to see Vice President harris, quote, get decimated, but when i asked if she thinks trump will do that, her response was if he can control himself. You get a sense that, you know, people are watching closely. They have a preference, but they ultimately want to see how it lands when the debate happens tonight, guys. Shaquille brewster, such interesting stuff, thank you so much. Up next, with the Polls Neck and neck, expect no love lost In The City Of Brotherly Love tonight. The problem points for both campaigns and how they might make a breakthrough. Plus, how democrats are targeting young voters on College Campuses across the Keystone State Today as we hear from a group of Latina College students, voters, ahead of the critical debate. If you could ask the candidates one question at this debate, what would it be. I would ask what patriotism means to them. T be. I would ask what patriotism means to them. After a euphoric august, an anxious reality is beginning to set in for democrats and the Harris Team. The Vice President s rise in the polls appears to have leveled out, showing this race is far from over. And likely to be a Nail Biter all The Way to november. Especially where we are now, pennsylvania, where a recent Cbs News Poll found the race tied in this state, the battleground among battlegrounds. Charlie dent is back with us. Also joining us is former democratic Congressman Conor Lamb from pennsylvania, and Julia Teruso for the philadelphia enquirer. Great to have All Of You here. Congressman lamb, ive been hearing maybe a little bit of, well, let me tell you what some democrats are telling me, oh, the fact that her polls are stalled are actually good because then people wont get too ahead of themselves and will continue to work hard. Are people anxious or excited, nervous, Freaking Out, about the polls and the debate . As far as democrats, they wouldnt be democrats if they werent anxious and Freaking Out about the polls. That just comes with the territory. Shes right where she needs to be. These things move in stages, and the last, you know, 100,000 people to make up their mind in this state are going to be the ones that decide the race. The best will they make up their minds starting tonight . Maybe starting tonight, but it wont finish tonight. The best piece of news she has is a huge amount of people say they still want to know more about her. And thats an edge that she has over trump, where their minds are open and shes going to get the chance to make an impression tonight and all The Way through and i believe shes going to take advantage of it. It is an edge perhaps but also a lot of pressure knowing that a lot of people are still getting to know her, she has to define herself. Of course, we have seen the polls tighten in all the battlegrounds really, but especially in pennsylvania. Tighter than wisconsin, tighter than were seeing in michigan. Why is that . Why pennsylvania . Well, i know people are sick of hearing it, but it really is increasingly looking like the election will come down to the state. And i think it is because, you know, in a lot of ways the state is a microcosm of the country, it is slightly older than the rest of the country, there are a large number of voters here who dont have college degrees, which is a group that former president Donald Trump has really made up a lot of ground with. And, you know, it is a state that has your big cities, your suburbs, a lot of Rural Area and a lot of kind of Rust Belt towns which have been his path to success in the past. It is just kind of the perfect puzzle that leads to a really Neck And Neck race. I think one of the interesting things ive been watching is how Kamala Harris, who has got so much money, has been using some of that to go into areas that democrats have never gone to before. And i heard that time and again in these Battleground States, theyre opening offices in places that have never seen a democratic office. Theyre going Door To door, they have hundreds of volunteers in places that are red. What does that mean for Donald Trump . What Kamala Harris is trying to do is trying to cut down trumps margin of victory. Hes still going to win those places. Hes going to win those counties. Remember what happened in 2020, Donald Trump underperformed in 66 out of 67 counties. That is he did marginally worse in 2020 than he did in 2016 and 66 of 67 counties. Only one where he did marginally better and youre sitting in it, philadelphia county. The only one. And so i think what she is trying to do is, like, she was out in beaver county, shes going to get killed in beaver county, but shes going to try to get defeated by a little less there. In pennsylvania, too, east of the susquehanna river, it is more like the northeast corridor. You get the west of the susquehanna river, more like the midwest. And so shes got to play that game a little bit, but shes just trying to cut down margins. Congressman lamb, i want to come back to something you mentioned, you said Kamala Harris is right where she needs to be right now. But you think about the amount of money shes raised, the momentum she has seen in energy, in fundraising, since she entered the race, the stumbles Donald Trump has had in the recent days, let me tick through a few, gone back and forth over his stance on abortion, he had the Arlington National Cemetery controversy, he spent late last week a 45 Minute News Conference talking about sexual assault claims, Bashing Accusers of his, and yet Neck And Neck in the polls. Does that surprise you . And how do you explain it . I truly dont think it can be explained. But it does not surprise me, except to say that we know that enormous majorities of americans, more than vote for either Party Say that they want a change in how things are done in washington. And they have been looking for ways to say that for years now. So thats what trump has always benefited from. All the things you mentioned make him different than anyone has ever come before, and it means he will be a change in some form if he returns to the White House. I think it is a terrible change. I think it is one that would rip our country apart and cost us a lot for years and years to come. But he conveys that with everything he does. And i think that the challenge that Vice President Harris Has, coming from almost an incumbent position, is heres how were going to change things, but for the better, and for a way that actually benefits you, and i think she does that on an issue on like a womans right to choose, where something bad has happened and she personifies a change that is going to fix it. I think they need to broaden the set of things where that is true, the Child Tax Credit or the minimum wage or going on offense on an issue like fracking or the border or, you know, the national Budget Or Something where you can kind of show i get that there is a problem, and im going to do it different that i than the people that came before, even my own administration. What is keeping you up at night over her candidacy and where democrats are right now . I think it is that i havent quite seen a move you might call it a move toward the middle. I think of it more as a step away, and a chance for her to come into her own, not just as a candidate, but a real leader that steps up and says i learned a lot in the last four years and the reason we need to keep the Natural Gas jobs in pennsylvania is because of how much it lowers the costs and provides jobs and strengthens our national security and shows as a leader, im learning, im stepping into the role, im not just a product of the people who came before me. I think shes going to do that. She needs to explain herself on the Natural Gas issue. She can just blame vladimir putin, the world has changed, we need gas, we need american gas, we need pennsylvania gas, thats why i support fracking. Thats what she should say. I think it is going to come up. The question i get a lot, im guessing you get it as well, i hear it virtually daily is from people who come up to me and say, how can people not know who theyre going to vote for . You could not have two more different people. So who are these undecided voters in the midwestern part of pennsylvania . Yeah, well, we know that there are about 3 of the electorate, though there is another 10 who is saying they could still change their minds, something that also surprises people. They tend to be more moderate, they tend to be more independent, and in a lot of the conversations i have anecdotally, theyre voters who are just really kind of Fed Up with both parties, with both candidates. I do think a debate like tonights is important for those voters, because theyre kind of looking for any excuse to go either way and while former President Trump is a well known candidate who, you know, we might think who needs more information, depending on what he says up there, it could sway someone and as Vice President harris tries to kind of define her positions who she is, i think that could have an impact as well. I spoke to voters this week too, and they said they want to hear where these candidates stand on the positions and not just where they stand, but what they plan to do. So, well be listening for that today. Thank you so much. Great to see you all. Just a reminder to stay with us all day on msnbc, starting at 7 00 p. M. But Vice President Harris Has really been preparing for this moment for decades, starting when she rose through the ranks in california politics and its courtrooms, and then on the president ial primary stage and finally in the 2020 vp debate. In the past, harris poured herself into Prep Sessions and came into the debates armed with highly specific policy and statistical details or attacks on her opponents. How does that translate into her Performance Tonight . Were about to find out. Joining us now, white House Reporter for bloomberg, Makayla Gardener and brian brokaw. We were just speaking with our last panel about how this is really an opportunity for harris to define herself and there are a lot of voters out there who say they want to know more about her. How does she and her team feel about the pressure of tonight in doing just that, and what are they hoping are the top takeaways from voters at The End of tonight . There is High Stakes for harris, because a lot of voters already know Donald Trump, have an opinion about him. He had a successful reality television show, he was in the White House, hes been at the top of the ticket three cycles now. People are still getting to know her and this is an opportunity outside of the dnc for voters who didnt tune into that night to get to know her. Shell detail her record and how thats been transformative for her and shaping her views because im sure that trump is going to point to the fact that her policies have changed since 2019 and i talked to some who say shes a different person, shes met more voters, no longer just a california republican politician i should say. Brian, based on what you saw from her in the other campaigns and one thing i heard about this one is that it was intense, she looked at all the former debates that Donald Trump did, what do you expect tonight . Look, she is somebody who has been preparing for this moment her whole life. And she has done the work, whether it is as a Courtroom Prosecutor or developing a breadth of policy, and shes put in the word that has put her in a position to be where she is now. I expect that this is going to be an opportunity for the american people to see her in a way that they dont havent seen her before. A lot of people have come into this general election with a preconceived view of her that maybe was based in less than truth. And i think this is actually a great chance for her to show she has stepped up in a major way since shes become the democratic nominee. And at the same time, shes up against somebody for whom the laws of political physics just dont seem to apply, the facts dont matter, basic human decency doesnt matter. It will be interesting to see if she refuses to take the bait, and whether he, you know, acts like the petulant child hes acted since his been in the race. We know Harris Has done mock debates, taken part in lengthy Question And Answer sessions, reading long briefing books, she does the work. One person familiar with her preparation expressed worries of overpreparing. Do you share any concerns about that . No. Look, i mean, one thing you can say about Kamala Harris is that she takes her role very seriously. I would rather have somebody who perhaps overprepares than flies by the seat of their pants and just says stuff like we saw Donald Trump do in that first debate. And, by The Way, i think this will be a great chance for her to correct the record and that debate back in june, he spouted off lie after lie and for one reason or another, a lot of the lies were allowed to stand. I dont think she is somebody who has taken on, you know, Attorneys General when she was in the senate, calling them on their lies, i dont think thats going to fly tonight. And im really interested to see how she handles it when he acts like himself. I think a lot of people are looking for that. To what Extent Shell be a fact checker. What do we know about her Strategy Tonight . I think shell certainly be fact checking him. I think she does expect some of the personal attacks, some insults. I dont think shes going to engage with them. There is a feeling that some of those are too low to engage with. I think shes going to land some policy punches. Shes been preparing on the economy, on abortion, and they feel like they can really draw a contrast while Donald Trump. I think the economy is the biggest one. It is her biggest vulnerability. She has to separate herself from biden and i think we continue to see like we saw in the New York Times poll, voters have poor perceptions of biden when it comes to inflation and high prices and she has to separate herself from the legacy at a time when shes still in the White House and i think that is going to be very awkward for her because she continues to respect biden and thank him for his endorsement every time she gets. This is trumps seventh general debate. Has she ever squared off against someone like trump . Yes and no. On the Debate Stage, of course, this is the first time she has ever been in a president ial general Election Debate and hes done probably more at this point than any president ial candidate in history. At the same time, as she said, the day after she took over the ticket, she knows Donald Trumps type. And at the same time, i think he knows her type as well. And i think that is one of the reasons why hes been so uncomfortable with the fact that all of a sudden he is in a very close race with someone like Kamala Harris. And it will be fascinating to see if he can actually hold back the disgust he seems to show with the fact hes competing with her and shes running Neck And Neck with him. And usually when hes on the Receiving End of someone of her type, he loses. What would your advice be to her if he does go there with those types of personal attacks or what he has said about Race And Gender and so forth . How should she handle that . I think we have already seen that she has the ability to show incredible restraint, she is cool and calm and collected under pressure. At the same time, she knows how to deliver a Knockout Punch and sometimes thats with words and sometimes thats just with silence or facial expression or a stare. And so, look, when she is up there on the stage, it is just her and her opponent. You cant prepare for every scenario. Sometimes you have to be quick on your feet, read The Room, know the moment, and take action in that moment. And i think Thats Something that her career has led her very well in preparing for this moment. 90 minutes of high intensity. Brian brokaw, akayla gardener, thank you so much. Up next, The Voice of the voters, my voice with the group of Latina College students and what is probably the most important battleground, pennsylvania. You could ask the candidates one question at this debate, what would it be . I think i would ask about how they would protect the freedoms of the american people. Project 2025, the threat of that, that that doesnt come forward in the future. F that, that that doesnt come forward in the future. Today here in philadelphia, democrats are targeting a key voting demographic, college students. The dnc is hoping to reach voters urging them to google project 2025, an effort to tie trump to the blueprint of far right policies. Both campaigns are increasing outreach to Gen Z voters. I recently sat down with a group of latina students down the road from the debate at Temple University here in philadelphia to talk about the candidates, the biggest issues in the race and how they see the stakes come november. Heres our conversation. Show of hands if you are planning to vote in this election. All of you. Keep your hand up if you are excited to vote. Oh, a little waivering. The minute i turned 18 i registered to vote. As young women, especially and as latino women its important to make our voices heard. You two both said that you maybe arent as excited to vote. Why . I guess you could say its an exciting anticipation, but its quite stressful. Its a little daunting to know that we are the generation that will be inheriting this country. I want to do a little round robin here because we have the debate coming up in philly not too far from here. Knowing about the two candidates in the debate, what comes to mind when it comes to Donald Trump selfish and arrogant. What words come to mind when you think of Kamala Harris . She has power in her voice. Eloquent. She has been persuasive and i think persuaded me to vote for her. Numbering. What does that mean . Her administration, what she would serve towards politics would be another four years of stagnant or very small progress, if any. I am curious to hear from those that say you are voting for harris. Is it a vote for harris or against trump . January 6th, seeing that play out i was in History Class when it happened and we watched it on cspan on tv. Is it a vote for or a vote against someone . In onhonestly, i would say its against trump. My vote, i thinks for harris. Harris said she would sign bills important to me. Reinstate roe v. Wade. What is important . The critical race theory, i am worried if history is taken out of schools, history will repeat itself. Donald trump has shown alarming behavior when it comes to immigrants, and i am a product of all that. The biggest issue for me is the current genocide going on in palestine. The main point for me is abortion. If it were not for ivf, i would not be here so thats an issue important to me as well. Do you feel like your Peer Group is more engaged in this election . Tiktok has helped with the campaign. In what way . I hate to bring this up, this album, and the Day Biden dropped off, she tweeted hair skwreus brat. I think its going to be, and this kind of The Way she has been sensationalized through Social Media. What would it mean to you to see a woman, the first woman, a woman of color in the Oval Office . Theres a photo of actually her niece, and you can see her niece with her pigtails looking at somebody who looks like her, and i think it will be an example for young girls. My mom, at 22, she did not think she would be a female woman of color, and she said to me i see you in her and that makes me want to cry a little bit. Our thanks to all those students and the team at Temple University. I love that conversation. Two things struck me. One word, stagnant. And the other, a vote against Donald Trump and not for Kamala Harris. Those are the ones she will be targeting tonight, right, the people looking for change and wondering if she represents it . That last part about the Social Media about this election, and that caught my ear realizing thats where so many young voters are getting their information when you talk about local newspapers going away and the variety of Information Avenues that are out there, thats a Big One now. Yeah, and they are using it. Thats going to do it for us this hour. Thank you so much for joining us.
