Thanks for starting it with us. And indeed, anticipation is growing with just hours now until Tonights President ial debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. The high Stakes Showdown is scheduled to begin at 9 00 p. M. Eastern in philadelphia at the national constitution center. This will be the first time the two have faced off on a Debate Stage against each other, and it will also be the first time the two have ever met in person. There will be no audience in the room, and both sides agreed to the rules ahead of time, which include microphones only being on for the candidate whose turn it is to speak and then muted when the time belongs to the other candidate. Only the moderators will be allowed to ask questions. Trump won a virtual Coin Toss and will be given the final closing statement. Those Closing Statements will be two minutes per candidate, and there will be no opening statements. Each candidate will be given two minutes to answer each question with then a Twominute Rebuttal and an additional minute for a Followup Clarification or response. Candidates will stand behind podiums for the duration of the debate. No props or prewritten notes will be allowed on the stage. Each will be given a pen, a pad of paper, and a bottle of water. Campaign staff may not interact with candidates during commercial breaks. Ahead of the face off Vice President harris gave a Radio Interview Yesterday saying she expects that trump is going to lie tonight. He plays from this really old and tired play book, right, where he theres no floor for him in terms of how low he will go. And we should be prepared for that. We should be prepared for the fact he is not burdened by telling the truth, and we should be prepared for the fact that he is probably going to speak a lot of untruths. He has a playbook that he has used in the past, be it, you know, his attacks on president obama or hillary clinton, so we should expect some of that might come out. And of Course Politico and other Media Outlets have pointed Out Trump has already laid the foundation for claiming this debate was rigged. In interviews, fundraising appeals, rallies, and posts on social media, the former president has repeatedly blasted the host network, abc, and accused its top Tal Want of being biased against him. Hes even accused that network without evidence of providing the questions in advance to the Harris Campaign. Those accusations come with the tables somewhat turned on trump with The New York Times pointing that trump is now the candidate on the Debate Stage facing questions about Age And Capacity now that President Biden is no longer in the race. Vice president harris, of course, about two decades younger than trump. Joining us now national Politics Reporter for the Wall Street journal, vivian salaama. Great to see you this morning. Well get into the substance in a moment, but of this. This is debate theater, theres goerg to be a stunning contrast on stage, these two who have never met before. A huge audience for the campaigns for either figures will be watching tonight. What are some things as the event gets rolling tonight what will you be watching for . To your point, john, just to show you hit criminal these debates are we saw how it impacted President Biden and his campaign. Obviously the stakes are so high especially for Vice President harris as she goes into this first president ial debate. Shes still fairly new to the american people as far as being a president ial candidate. For her the main objective is really be ableeople, know what shes about. Polls are showing that a large number of americans still dont really know her policies or what she stands for or just really what shes all about. So she has this enormous burden to go out there and tell the american people who she is and what she stands for and do so in a way much more effective than how Donald Trump will attempt to define her. So that is going to be one of the big issues. Like you say its a lot of theatrics. Television debates historically have been, so were also going to be looking for these key moments that stands out. You know, she had a classic one in the 2020 Vice President ial debates when she was debating Vice President Mike Pence at the time where she just told him, mr. Vice president , im speaking. Things like that stand out. And if either of them have moments like that, that obviously serves them, potentially serves them well as well. You mentioned certainly for the Vice President an opportunity to really introduce herself again to the nation. But for Donald Trump this comes on a moment on the heels of a weekend of really dangerous rhetoric about threatening mass arrests and imprisonment of his enemies. Tell us what your sources are saying in terms of how both candidates are preparing for this moment, and what theyll do today before things start at 9 00 in philadelphia. So Vice President harris has taken a more traditional approach doing mock debates and talking with her team, preparing in that way, doing policy sessions. Donald trump has typically shunned those mock debates. He does not do them, but he does do policy sessions. Hes brought in help like Congressman Matt Gaetz from florida and former congresswoman tulsi gabbard, who has joined the ranks to help the former president with his preparations. And so they are basically going at this trying to frame certain policies that they believe the other person has weaknesses on. So in the Trump Campaign theyre really trying to tout issues like the Border Crisis and soaring inflation and to tie Vice President harris inexplicably to Joe Biden to say a continuation of those issues. Where Vice President harris is going to be looking at a Prosecutor Standpoint of Law And Order and former President Trumps record as far as being a convicted felon and some of the other issues, you know, the erratic behaviors in the office january 6th, the fact his national security advisers, many of them have come out against him since his time in office. So theyre going to be trying to make that contrast. And essentially Vice President harris is going to be saying, listen, this is a path forward, im a new beginning different from trump and even different from President Biden in certain ways although supportive of him, and well see whos more effective in that messaging. And lastly, vivian, before you go this night occurs in a moment where polls suggest the race virtually tied, margins very slim nationally and more importantly in the Battleground States. These teams, are they acknowledging just how high the stakes are this evening . Absolutely. And, again, just going back to the debate in june to see how these debates can really shape a race, both campaigns are very aware of the fact that the stakes are incredibly high. Theyre going into this really with their game faces on, understanding that any wrong move, any wrong word could really impact them. And so especially on former President Trumps campaign, you do see that his advisers have really been urging him to stay on message, avoid any personal attacks or anything that could really alienate some of those few critical voters he still needs to push him over the top come november, so well see if he sticks to that, john. Virtually every poll shows a margin of just a point or two one way or another. And with the debate happening tonight, theres a Government Shutdown looming at The End of the month, and now House Speaker Mike Johnson is facing rebellion within his own party. At least six republican lawmakers have said they will vote against johnsons plan to pair a sixmonth Continuing Resolution with a trumpbacked bill that would require proof of citizenship to vote. The speaker told Reporters Yesterday that theres no Fallback Plan at the moment. Youre going to have to vote whats your fall back position, though . There is no fall back position. This is a righteous fight. When you check the polls on this, about 80 of american citizens believe you ought to be you should have to before you register to vote. Reporter Campaign Sources telling Nbc News harris and her team are focusing on ways to needle trump, to provoke him, and that shes studied past Trump Debate clips. Its time to turn the page on the divisiveness. Its time to bring our country together. Reporter but a key challenge for harris trying to present herself as the Change Candidate when shes also the incumbent vp. A new poll shows more than 60 of likely voters want a major change from President Biden. More than half of those voters say trump will bring that change, but only 25 say harris will. The polling the last couple of days has made it very clear. Harris is more personally popular which is almost unheard of at this point in the campaign. Her questions are basically about the ability to command the stage and be confident in her principles, to stand for what she ascribes for and to limit some of the weakness she has right now in immigration and the economy. A lot of this is down to responding to the last month of trump attacks, which have been about policy from day to day but different policies. But the through line of them all has been about confidence and trust. She has 90 minutes to stick to the position shes maintained for the last four years and be convincing. What about for trump . Hes obviously so much of a known commodity than the Vice President , and we should note, again, this debate comes after days worth of dangerous rhetoric, threatening massive imprisonments for his enemies. What do you think hes going to try to do tonight, and can he . He is in a good position when it comes to voters who want change from the biden administration. He needs to not mess that up. He can take some shots at harris to weaken her on the points i was just talking about to raise more questions about whether she is ready for the job. There are topics clearly she does not like to get into he can bring up anytime hes discussing withdrawal from afghanistan. It is a quack mire for the Biden Campaign to talk about as it is for the Harris Campaign to talk about. Hes in a stronger position than he was entering in the 2016 debates or 2020 debates. He has a kind of do no Harm Agenda that would work pretty well for him tonight. And lastly, dave, what do you think in terms of people you talk to . Can we see harris the prosecutor against the convicted felon or is it more the joyful warrior that weve seen dominate the Campaign Stage . More of the first because there is and shows up in some Focus Groups and polling, theres a voter out there not enthused about bringing Donald Trump but not convinced she can handle the job. When you look back how she debated Mike Pence and four years ago on a national stage, its memorable of her talking over pence when he was trying to break in, but answer by answer she was very concise, very direct. Did not have some of the overtalking some trump folks make fun of in her interviews. If that harris shows up, the harris that delivers the bidenharris administrations best talking points, the best defense of what theyve done, the best arguments to move forward, i dont think humor would benefit that. If she can be a Prosecutor Tonight and make the case against Donald Trump that his views are too much outside the main stream and perhaps four years from now he will have even more of this wild Rhetoric And Lack of focus, she can be a plausible president on the precipice of becoming entering the White House. A new Quinnipiac University Poll has Donald Trump leading Vice President harris by four points among likely voters in georgia. 49 to 45 . But in north carolina, harris leads trump by three. 49 to 46 . Hard to square those two. I guess the answer is things are close, and we should note, both polls are within the margin of error. Meanwhile, republican officials are sounding the alarm to the Trump Campaign over the Voter Turnout Operation in Battleground States. According to the guardian, the republican ticket invested far fewer resources in its Ground Game than in previous cycles. The officials say the operations resemble a midterm cycle, not a president ial election. They also say that attempts by the Trump Campaign to fill the gap through money from political Action Committees have come too late. The republican national committee once hoped for a massive Ground Game team in 2024. However, once trump loyalists took over the committee, they redirected that funding to combating alleged voter fraud. Joining us now is national political correspondent for politico, meredith mcgraw. Lets start with the Ground Game piece of this. Tonight is going to matter. So much of the blocking and tackling of campaigning is about the Ground Game. It seems like democrats have a significant advantage over republicans. Well, this is something i keep hearing again and again from republican strategists on the ground in some of these Battleground States. The Trump Campaign has outsourced a lot of their Ground Game operations to outside conservative groups who are doing things like door knocking or voter Data Gathering or making the Phone Banking Phone calls that are so essential to driving turnout on election day, or even gauging where different voters on the ground are. A lot of that has been outsourced, and it caused angst among some republicans on the ground who dont feel like the Trump Campaign is doing enough at the moment to edge out democrats organization. We played a clip from Nikki Haley. I think her efforts to get Trump And Vance to tone down their rhetoric will fall on deaf ears, but shes on to something with Trumps Problem with women. Polls show he is down there. Tonight, he squares off against a woman in Vice President harris. Talk to us about how the Trump Campaign is trying to close this gender gap. Look, Donald Trump has been behind harris by double digits with women, and he really hasnt been able to close that gap at all. His Performance Tonight at the debate could be really important in all of that. Because, of course, like you said, he is squaring off against a woman again. When i asked trumps campaign about this yesterday, you know, they said that trump respects women. Hes not going to change his tone. Hes really going to be focused on policy. Thats what trumps advisors are hoping, is that he keeps the focus on Harris Record as the prosecutor and as an Attorney General in california. Of course, her record, too, as Vice President in the biden administration. But there have been concerns that ive heard from outside allies that trumps tone could really hurt him with collegeeducated women who he continues to struggle with. And weve seen how trump has tried to moderate his message for women. Hes said his administration would be great for, quote, reproductive rights, and, you know, hes bragged about how some women really love him. But the polling just doesnt bear that out. Trumps advisors brought in former Congressman Tulsi Gabbert who debated against harris, to help him calibrate for the debate. Debating harris herself, she landed some points that were effective. Back to the democratic primaries there. You mentioned that trumps advisors are hoping to focus on policies. We can be skeptical that trump would be able to do that. During the debate with biden, he told countless lies. It was overshadowed, of course, by bidens faltering performance. Whats the Worry Level among trump allies and aides, that hell be able to keep his composure if Kamala Harris goes after him . I think they feel a sigh of relief from the debate rules themselves. The fact the microphones are going to be muted, thatll prevent him from talking over harris. You know, if you think back to when harris debated Vice President Mike Pence, one of those memorable moments was when she turned to him and said, im speaking, because he was interrupting her. I dont think were going to see something like that on stage, but for trumps advisors, sticking to her record will be essential to them feeling good about tonight.
