Thats former Congresswoman Liz Cheney encouraging her fellow republicans to vote for Kamala Harris this fall. It comes as another highprofile name in the gop is endorsing the democratic Vice President. Former republican Vice President Dick Cheney announced that he will not vote for Gop Nominee Donald trump, but instead will back the democratic candidate, Kamala Harris. His statement released On Friday slammed trump, calling him a tlt to our republic and pointed to his repeated 2020 election lies. Cheney wrote this. He tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him. He can never be trusted with power again. Trump, as you might expect, responded in a Social Media post, calling cheney an irrelevant Rhino Or Republican in name only. Vice president harris, meanwhile, says she was honored by the endorsement. Im actually honored to have their endorsement, and i think that what they both as leaders who are well respected are making an important statement, that its okay and if not important to put Country Above party. Harris there speaking at a local stop in pittsburgh where shes been camping out during debate prep. Meanwhile former president george w. Bush has no plans to endorse anyone in the upcoming election. When asked by Nbc News over the weekend whether he or his wife laura will endorse a republican or how they will vote, he said no. President bush retired from president ial politics six years ago. The fact that hes not endorsing his Partys Nominee is notable. In 2008, late Senator Incain and earlier his father said they would steer clear of the white House Race and would refrain from commenting on Donald Trump. And in 2021 bush said he wrote in former Secretary Of State condoleezza rice. Thats who he voted for for president in 2020. So there is growing concern this morning among several of Donald Trumps allies that Hell Blow this debate and ruin his best chance to regain ground against Vice President harris. Thats according to new reporting in politico, reporting that prominent gp officials and some of trumps own advisers have now been urging the republican president ial nominee for weeks to keep the focus on critiquing harrisS Policy record. But trump has inextend continued to signal that hes not interested in backing down from delivering personal attacks. A Trump Campaign Official who spoke to politico said the expresident has been working with senior staff and allies to determine how to best portray a contrast with harris during tomorrow Nights Debate held in philadelphia. But the official suggested that preparations have been minimal, saying trump is, quote, simply reviewing Policy Specifics that he believes voters will most care about in order to contrast his time in office to Kamala Harriss four years as copilot, meaning in the biden administration. At the same time, former new Jersey Governor Chris christie is offering his advice to Kamala Harris. The republican who haS Previously not only debated trump but also helped trump prepare for debates says harris should refuse to engage in trumps attacks during the debates. A The New York Times Siena College poll released yesterday shows 48 are for Donald Trump and Kamala Harris one point behind at 47 . Those are within, of course, the margin of error. Another poll finds the race in three Battle Ground states extremely tight. The latest Cbs News Yougov Poll shows harris is up one point on trump, 5049. Meanwhile in pennsylvania, the two are deadlocked at 50 . And in wisconsin, the poll finds harris up two, 51 to 49 . Again, all of these results are within the margin of error. Its basically been a Marginoferror Race since harris stepped in. Theres a trend Long Island thats supported her for several weeks. They seem to have cooled just a touch, but largely were in a dead heat. So talk to us about the stakes of Tomorrow Night. Yeah, so theyre going into this debate in a dead heat like you mentioned, especially in these Battleground States which you know are going to determine the election, a state like pennsylvania where theyre still tied and have been. So i think both camps are trying to move the needle during the debate. Theyre hopeful that undecided voters, people who havent been participating in polls, independents, moderates on both sides of the aisle will be tuned in and sees or hears something that resonates with them that decides ahead of november who theyre voting for or somebody who saw an endorsement like Dick Cheney and then sees the debate and Donald Trump says something that maybe they find offensive and then they say, okay, you know what . Im officially in Vice President harriss camp. I think especially Vice President harriss camp is trying to build on the momentum that has still lingered behind her that will push her over the edge with some undecided voters. Meanwhile Donald Trumps camp is trying to get him to focus on Policy Or Talk saving Child Care costs which he wasnt able to answer a question on last week that maybe could resonate with the voter on tuesdays debate stage. One thing that struck me in The Times siena poll, 28 of them said they felt they needed to know more about harris while only 9 said they needed to know more about trump. Trump has been in our lives for a long time. For her, it seems like theres a percentage of americans who want to learn more about her as a person, but more importantly about her policy. Is Tomorrow Night a chance to explain it . Thats right. I think that i want her to focus on policy Tomorrow Night as one way to challenge former president Donald Trump, make him talk about policy, but make him answer the questions the way The American voters feel like they dont know about her yet. What is she actually going to do to lower costs of groceries and gas for my family. These issues theyve been concerned about throughout the biden administration and are worried she would just be a continuation. But a number like that, that there are still less than 30 of voters who feel like they dont know enough about her, we used to be an election that had the two most wellknown men running for president , President Trump and president biden. Maybe they only heard about the negatives of her working on the border or the negatives when they would, you know, watch tv and hear what republicans had to say when they would criticize her. Now they actually want to hear, what are you going to do for me and my family, and i think the Vice President s team is really focused on her having these specific Policy Points that she can point to and say heres exactly what my plan is, its slightly different from what president Bidens Plan is, im not bashing hiS Plan, but its a little bit different, and i have a real outline, and you can trust me on these issues that you feel so strongly about. Former president Donald Trump issued an ominous warning on Social Media over the weekend, threatening to prosecute and imprison those he claim cheated in the election. The former president warned that people would be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, which will include longterm Prison Sentences, adding his threat excepted to lawyers, political operatives, donors, and corrupt election officials. Trump made it clear he plans on going after his opponents if hes elected, claiming the 2020 election was rigged despite there being no evidence that the election was rigged. Lets just underscore here. Hes threatening to prosecute and imprison hiS Political opponents were he to win again. That is a dauncher to our democracy. Meanwhile trump was in a manhattan courtroom On Friday in a bid to overturn last years sexual Abuse Verdict in a case involving writer e. Jean carroll. The former president Criticized Carroll and another woman who claims trump groped her on an airplane in the 1970s, an accusation hes long denied. So think of the impracticality of this. And speaking of his legal team, a new York Judge has delayed former President Trumps sentencing on felony criminal charges in his hush money case, and that delay now pushes the sentencing until after the november election. The judge issued the ruling On Friday after trumps attorneys asked him to postpone the sentencing which was scheduled for next week, september 18th, allowing them to appeal a pending ruling involving president ial immunity. The sentencing will now take place on november 26th. Judge merchan wrote this. This is not a decision this court makes lightly, but it is the decision which in this courts view best advances the interests of justice. Back to politics now, and former Srk Governor Nikki Haley dodged a question about whether she thinks Donald Trump is a good candidate. The comment was made during an interview that aired on cbss Face The Nation yesterday. Haley was asked about trumpS Press conference On Friday in which he talked about the e. Jean Carroll Case in which the jury assessed him liable for the abuse. When you were campaigning you said you really had no question regarding the Defamation Card brought by e. Jean carroll. Im not askinger the spengs of the case, but if thats the focus of the press candidate, a, is it the best time, and what is the message to female voters to be going through this again . I think the focus for me is on policy. But hes the candidate. And ive always said, look, if i thought Biden Or Trump were great candidates, i wouldnt have run for president. You dont think i think hes a nominee. For me, its not a question. Now do i agree with his style . Do i agree with his approach . Do i agree with his communications . No. When i look at the policies and how they affect my family and how theyre going to affect the country, thats when i go back and look at the differences. You know, Nikki Haley for a long time held out, wouldnt endorse trump. Then she did, sort of halfheartedly. The Trump Team doesnt want anything to do with her. Shes stuck in situations like this. It feels like what a mess, and what is this doing for this campaign and her political future . These are the candidates weve been given reminds me of ding cheney. It was don rumsfeld. You go to war with the army you have. Thats basically what she seems to be saying here, but, look, it is bizarre, right . I think if you if you were to get Nikki Haley a couple of drinks in her, i think she would be talking about things like what does she care about . She cares about international ism, she cares about things like reagan did, a beacon of hope. Dick and Liz Cheney went in a different direction. Partisanism is a heck of a drug, but she must believe she has some future in thiS Party, and its hard for me to imagine that she does. I dont think Donald Trump wants much to do with her. He might be smart to actually hi use her more than he is, but even if Donald Trump were to leave the scene of the republican party, i dont think were going to turn our lonely eyes to Nikki Haley. You mentioned the cheneys, former Vice President Dick Cheney as well as his daughter, former Congresswoman Liz Cheney. They both said theyll vote for Kamala Harris. Former president george w. Bush sitting it out. But there have been a number of bushera republicans who say theyre going to vote for harris or at least have made it clear they wont vote for trump. Do you think that matters . Is there a Permission Slip being created that might convince some republican voters to back harris, or is this is this something thats just going to be ignored by the Gop Rank and file . No. I think the Kai Word is some. There may be a few. I think there will be. Look, on one hand, i think itS Pretty stunning how many republicans like Nikki Haley who, i think, vehemently disagree with Donald Trump ice world view, and his temperament have stuck with him. 90 , i think, will. This is an election that will be decided by Tens Of Thousands of votes in three to five states. Here you have Dick Cheney who was Vice President not that long ago, 15 years or something like that. Vehemently conservative republican. They call him darth vader, i believe. Yeah, so if youre old enough to remember 15 or 20 year ago, he was like an iconic conservative republican, and so i do think this would create some sort of permission structure. You will have to go against your team, but you will be saying, look, i was a part of this team, but if Dick Cheney is no longer on board, then neither am i. I think there is a permission structure. It could matter. Its remarkable since the year 2000, every republican president ial or Vice President ial nominee think about all of them. Item walz was a Subject Piece you wrote about recently for the hill. You said, i was wrong about Tim Walz. Tell us what changed your mind on that . I though it that Kamala Harris should go with Josh Shapiro. As the governor of pennsylvania, maybe he can deliver pennsylvania. Hes young e, he presents a lot younger. Maybe they could have had a generational change argument. And Josh Shapiro was more my brand of politics just philosophically, so i was a little bummed out when she picked out walz, but you cannot deny the political talent that this man has. I think weve seen it in the last month demonstrated. I think were going to see a lot more of it. The likability, the charm, the everyman quality. I think when you want to try thy man quality. And i do think that when you want to try to appeal to a populous voter in the rust belt, for example, i think walz is he brings it. You know, well see. Look, if she ends up losing pennsylvania by a point, maybe i will regret, you know, revising my opinion, but as of now, i think walz has been very, very effective. Lastly and briefly, of course, the debate Tomorrow Night. What are a couple of things you think harris needs to do . I think forget the gimmicks. No trick plays. No gimmicks. She needs to do one thing, and that is be charming. I have seen it is almost like a starting pitcher, you know . You can maybe tell early on if they have their agame or not. Sometimes Kamala Harris shows up, and she is likable and charming, and sometimes its not. I think well probably be able to tell pretty early on if were going to have the Word Salad or not. I dont know. Maybe its an extra cup of coffee. But she needs to be likable and charming, and i think if she does that, the contrast with Donald Trump, who is none of those things, will be stark. What are some of the things she needs to do . Well, i think the first thing i expect Donald Trump to be, unhinged. If you look at the last couple days, his Social Media posts, he has even gone further than the places hed normally go, talking about arresting and incarcerating and long jail terms for his opponents. Its just unheard of in The American democratic process, for a candidate to talk like that. But i would say that im looking for Kamala Harris not to fall into the trap of trying to go in a combative way with him. Let him appear unhinged. Remain herself. Dont let him get away with anything that she shouldnt, but keep on your content. Keep on your message. Hit him when you have to, and keep coming back to prove to The American people youre prepared to be the president in a balanced, sane way. And i think the contrast of her being calm and, as your last guest said, charming, to this guy will work for her. But, at the same time, she cannot appear bullied or intimidated. Im glad you brought up the Social Media post. We covered it earlier in the show, as well. Trump suggesting hed arrest and give long Prison Sentences to anyone he deemed to have cheated in the 2020 election or 2016. Its extraordinarily dangerous. Combine that with the threat for mass deportations in the immigration plan, these are two of the biggest potentially policing movements this nation has ever seen. Thats not democratic. Its not democratic. In fact, it is antidemocratic. Its what people fought to have, a democracy, not an autocrat. Mind you, hes not even talking about they need to go through a judicial process and investigation. Im going to make sure. Hes the law now. Hes saying it out loud, and i think its dangerous. That is why people like even a Dick Cheney, who i have been vehemently opposed to most of my life, hes saying, this guy is in no mans land, and this is dangerous. Lastly, one thing that struck us from The New York Times Siena Polling that showed a dead heat race. 28 of those surveyed wanted to her more about harris, learn more about who she is, and what she stands for. Is that going to be part of Tomorrow Night, filling in the gaps . It can be and should be. Which is why the things she shouldnt go for the bait of going Tit For Tat with him. Introduce herself. Be herself. Show she understands how to run government, because she has run it for the last four years, just about. Shes been Vice President. Shes been a u. S. Senator. Let people understand, im not that. Im an experienced person that knows how to run government.
