Donald trump addressed his maga faithful today in a town of 4500 in wisconsin. While his Campaign Speech was just a rerun of his old hits, the Rallys Location was noteworthy. It followed recent rallies in howell, michigan, la crosse, wisconsin, and johnstown, pennsylvania. You might be asking what do these towns have in common . Let me explain. They are all known or referred to as Sundown Towns, towns with racist and sometimes violent histories of forced segregation. As many as 10,000 Sundown Towns had sprung up around the country by 1970. If you were black in an all white town, you could not be in that town After Dark without it being a serious threat to your security. Sometimes the threat was implicit, but sometimes they put it in writing like this Newspaper Headline in norman, oklahoma in the 1920s when University Of Oklahoma students invited a black orchestra to play and norman residents actually threatened those Band Members lives because the dance was After Dark, violating sundown laws. There was often a lynching that led to a town going sundown, like this incident in arkansas in 1901 when a black man was strung up by eight men. Take a look at this headline from a town in Western Arkansas called bonanza in 1904. 1904 was a long time ago. That town had no black households as late as the year 2000. So we are still very much living this history right now. The acts of violence that occurred and the threat of violence was so bad that Black Americans Produced Travel Guides like this one to help them figure out which businesses were safe to go to to avoid violence or threats. So it is notable that of all the towns that trump could visit in his limited schedule, he has chosen to visit small towns with these histories. I want to be very clear for a moment. There is nothing wrong with visiting these towns. They are american. They deserve to be represented in congress and have elected officials advocating for them and trying to win their votes. The issue is not visiting a town with a deeply violent and racist history. It is visiting those towns with the purpose of tapping into the attitude of racial resentment and animosity that still persist in this country. Take a look at Donald Trump in howell, michigan last month, the town most associated with the kkk in this country. He held his event at the Sheriffs Office and made sure to be surrounded by squad cars. We know what image he is trying to project. Again, showing up at these towns is not the problem, but showing up when your Stump Speech includes lines about how some Human Beings are berman, about the need to confront hordes of immigrants, about the need to cut down on crime and majority black cities, this is a problem. As i laid out it is not about going to these towns. It is about the message of going and the attitudes you are trying to tap into in those towns. I think you are right that the visit is not the problem, it is the messaging and who he is trying to visit four. Donald trump has a Clarion Call to White Supremacists and he knows it and uses it often. Weve seen it when he said there were good people on both sides in charlottesville. When he has called cities that are run by black mayors, some of the worst cities in america, all of these things that are against the actual Crime Statistics for those cities. We have seen time and time again that this is a guy who was once at the seat of power for this nation and the leader of the free world who has actually no problem trying to take america back to where we did not have civil rights. Trying to take america back to Reconstruction Era politics. A guy who even though he says he does not endorse project 2025 is something out of project 2025 which was written by people who served in his administration his campaign currently. I think for him choosing these towns is specific because he is doing an allout call to White Supremacists. The people who are known for their racism. He sees them as his base and wants them to know that he stands by and protects them and that is what this is all about. Running against a black woman in trying to implement Race Wars, he knows what he is doing. This is no mistake. When you look at the town he was visiting in wisconsin, it only has a population of about 4500. Trump one in 2016 and 2020 by wide margins. This is a close race. Trump has a limited campaign schedule. Politics would dictate you go to contested areas where you need to win votes, where it might be a tossup as to which Town Or City or district you might win. Not going to the districts that you know you are absolutely going to win and it raises the question, why do you think he is going to these towns that he won convincingly by large margins when he is not going to areas that can be more competitive . Well, ayman, a lot of it has to do with the fact when you dont have the ability to go to everyplace being contested, you need to use the places that will be hot spots for yourself as Force Multipliers. You know the people who are like you, they are going to amplify The Voice of Donald Trump as long as he is able to get to some of those places and convince those people, i stand with you. He is effectively allowing or using these places as mouthpieces for White Supremacy and you know this to be the case because as you and ameshia pointed out it is not necessarily the visit, but what you say and do not say when you are there. When you do not make comment that deals with the racially divisive and incendiary nature of these places and their existence and go there and make political homes there. These are very clear signals to your base. So he is using these places essentially as Force Multipliers for that reason, to turn out his base in places where he needs it the most. And when he has not doing that, ameshia, he is basically insulting and being insensitive with black voters and frankly all of america. We remember in 2020 he scheduled a rally in tulsa, oklahoma, on juneteenth, which was taken as a sign of disrespect by anyone with a basic understanding of our history. He then moved to the Rally Date and claimed that he made juneteenth very famous by moving his rally. Yeah, this is a moment for the former president. This is a guy who is very intentional in his racism. This is a guy who coddles White Supremacists. A guy who likes to see the violent rhetoric that he used being taken into communities and expressed. We have to be very serious when we have a conversation about Donald Trump and who he is. The same Donald Trump that did not want black people living in the residences that carried the trump name. The same Donald Trump that wanted to see the exonerated five actually face murder by the state. This is the same Donald Trump who has no problem playing and trying to create a Race War across this country and i think it is very important that we pay attention to his actions as well as his rhetoric. It is not just words. When he says make america great again, he means make America White again. He wants white men to have the only access in this country, be the only leaders in this country. Be the only people whose words and policies matter. He does not want a multicultural society and for him that runs through the black community and the progress that black people have made across this country. I think it is important that we all recognize that. He does not want black men to vote. He does not want black people to vote. What he wants is a divergence between black men and black women and the more he sees that might happen and his campaign instigates it, the happier he is. And we remember he kicked off his campaign this cycle in waco, texas, a Town Famous for the Branch Davidian extremists and separatists who had a violent standoff with the government in 1993. He held the rally on the 30 Year Anniversary of that infamous incident in waco and he famously vowed retribution at his rally for people like the January 6 insurrectionists, so he knows what he is doing. He knows the Back Drop and the messaging and the signaling. He is just opening hoping the rest of us are dumb enough not to notice. I think youre right. At the end of the day this is not someone who can purport to be ignorant about the signals he stands with the stunts, but i also think it is important to understand that because the public has already seen Donald Trump he is having more difficulty this time going after some of the centrists and independents who, in 2016, were willing to give him a shot. Now what he has to do is reverse course and push in the other direction and reach for these people on the fringes of American Society when you talk about popular thought, being able to express that with respect to extreme ideologies that lean to the right. He cant get the center so as to account for it by reaching even more to the right, the extreme right, to try to compensate for that piece of the vote in the middle that he is not able to get this time around. To that point, politically, is that a strategy that could work, ameshia . It worked eight years ago when he won the electoral College Vote with that strategy. Can it work this time as well . I think america is more divided than it has ever been. The last time we saw divisions the start was during the civil Rights Movement and if Donald Trump is able to corral the folks who are antidei, people who do not want to see america that has shown any signs of racial progress, that is going to be a very tough and scary thing. But i do think diverse voters, younger voters, if Women Voters dont show up and show out this election cycle, that is what will happen. Make no mistake, there are way too many people comfortable with the message that Donald Trump provides. With project 2025, with his ideology for what america should look like. There are people invested in taking us all back and if individuals dont show up on Election Day at the polls and actually care about where this democracy is going and want to see a fully functional one, Donald Trump will get his way and be back again. At the same time we dont know how the american public would have responded to the potential for jail time for an elected president or a president who is going to be elected to office or whether that might have influenced their vote. These are all questions that go into the calculations that the judge had to undergo and it is important to understand that regardless of whatever decision he was going to make or whatever sentence he ultimately levies, it was going to be viewed as putting his thumb on the scale and challenging the election, which is something i think he wisely avoided. Let me then tap into your expertise as a legal expert, as well as kind of a political pundit. Lets unpack the idea of politicizing this case. Do you think that the outcome of the sentencing would have any real impact . Hes already been found guilty. That part is done. That cannot be undone unless it goes through an appeals process, which is what the normal processes, so we are really talking about the sentencing and do you think his Maga Base or those potentially voting against him would care about the type of sentence he receives even though he has already been found guilty of the crimes alleged . I think at some point that does become part of the conversation, particularly if you have a conversation that relates to the potential of jail time on any level. At that point both campaigns have to work that into their Talking Points and Donald Trump is to figure out a way to deflect voters from it or any concerns they might have about electing someone who would have to do any amount of time behind bars, whereas Kamala Harris would have to make the decision for how much and what degree she wanted to talk about that. When youre talking about that higher level of sentence, which i want to be clear is still not likely to be a huge part of what Judge Merchan imposes on Donald Trump, but still possible. It could impact where things go for either campaign as they do with it, so it could be something that would absolutely play a role in the election going forward. Let me get your thoughts on another legal development this week. Judge chutkan stressing she is not going to let the election impact the schedule for the case that is back in her hands. I am glad to see you made it out of gaza safely. First of all tell us about your motivation to volunteer in gaza and how was your experience there compared to other missions youve been on . Thanks for having me. This is actually my first mission i have done. I have done covid relief in the past, but i was there for four weeks and this was quite unimaginable. Nothing that i could have imagined in my entire career. The things we have seen and things that we were treating, i was well aware of the situation prior to leaving, but witnessing it firsthand was quite different. What were the common injuries and illnesses . What was the general condition of the hospital you were working it like . Mostly retreated pediatric patients. I would say above 80 for pediatric injuries. Some were single shots to the left side of the chest, to the head, to major vessels in the body such as the arteries. We saw shrapnel injuries. Burns. And you know, young adults as well. The situation at the hospital is extremely unfortunate. There is a complete lack of resources. There are no simple things like gauze. We had to halt surgery for a couple of days because there was no gauze, no gowns. No disinfecting agents. Nothing to clean with. They were cleaning the Hospital Floors with water. There is a lack of antibiotics. As you can imagine the Infection Rate is astronomic. It is something getting more and more attention, the outbreak of disease. The world is now aware of the first Polio Case that has taken place there in 25 years, but what are some of the diseases that you saw . What were the causes behind these diseases and based on your medical expertise, are these cases that can be prevented in normal circumstances . Absolutely, completely preventable. One of the examples is diabetic ketoacidosis. The reason for this, we saw so many patients and the reason is because there is no refrigeration for the insulin. So patients would come in and get treated for the insulin, but they go back to tense with no electricity, so they have no way of taking their insulin. It can put a person in a potentially lifethreatening situation. And very avoidable. People are coming in with strokes because they dont have their hypertension medications. All of these things are completely preventable and unnecessary. I know it might be hard to describe this, but what was the mental condition of the people that not only treated, but those you work with . The palestinian doctors who are not able to leave gaza, what is the mental condition of the people who lived through this trauma now for close to a year . First i think that the people of gaza are the most resilient and strong people i have ever met in my entire life. They are completely, endlessly working for 11 months. The feeling is exhaustion and a sense of losing hope and that this is continuing and getting worse. The Situation Inside Gaza is terrible. It is atrocities. What did you think that patients needed the most in terms of care that they are not able to get because of the ongoing war and the Blockade And Inability for the international community to actually deliver aid to gaza . That list is very long, ayman, but the most common thing is simple things like clean water. Clean water. Soap. Just soap. A bottle of shampoo is unaffordable for most people. It is 30 40 for a small bottle of shampoo, to give you an example, and that is if it is available. Cleanliness and hygiene, those are basic Human Needs and that is what is lacking to start with. It is a very long list. Clean water is important. Electricity. We were in the hospital during a Mass Casualty and the power went out. There was no power while we were treating multiple casualties. So just things like that. There are a lot of things that you cant appreciate from a Picture Or Video from Social Media. We have been covering the war from Day One and covered a lot of incidents that involve Aid Workers being killed. Im curious as an Aid Worker or volunteer worker, were you ever afraid for your life as you moved from the outside of Gaza Into gaza and what that experience was like for you . Yeah, i mean we were afraid every day while we were at the hospital and that is supposed to be a safe area. I was doing a critical procedure on a patient during one of these casualties. The bomb from the airstrike was so close that my ears were ringing, so that tells you how close it was. The walls were shaking and the ground beneath me was shaking, so we felt unsafe. Then leaving we were also feeling that way. Finally what do you want people to take away from what you saw and experienced there after your time in gaza . I think you touched on it before the break, but just the level of destruction to the infrastructure of this population, starting with education. Medical students have completely halted their education. There is a lack of physicians going into the healthcare field. Children have not had school for a year. All of these things are necessary for a population and these are the types of things that you cant really appreciate from pictures.
