It does not have to be this way. It does not have to be this way. That was Vice President Kamala Harris reacting to the deadly Shooting Yesterday at a High School in georgia. Good Morning And Welcome to Way Too Early on this thursday, september 5th. Im Sam Stein in for jonathan lemire. We begin this morning with the deadly shooting at a High School in georgia. It happened Yesterday Morning at aplatchee High School, which is about 45 miles away from atlanta. Police say a 14yearold Student killed four people and injured at least nine others. Its believed he used what authorities say is a, quote, arplatform style weapon. Students and teachers had to shelter in classrooms and were eventually evacuated to the football stadium. Two students died in the gunfire, mason, and christian. Two teachers were also killed, richard and christina. All those who were injured are expected to survive. Now, police say two School Resource officers found the suspect minutes after shots were fired. The suspect surrendered immediately and was taken into custody. He is now being charged as an adult with murder. Nbc News Correspondent Jesse Kirsch has more from georgia. Reporter sam, were learning more about the deadly shooting that occurred at aplatchee High School here in georgia. We learned four people were killed, two students, two teachers, 14 years old. The same age as the suspected shooter who authorities have identified as colt gray. Officials have confirmed that the suspect from this deadly Shooting Incident was previously investigated for potential violence against schools last year, but authorities say there was not probable cause for an arrest at that time. There was a vigil. There were dozens of people gathered. We were there, and i can tell you it was so quiet that i could hear the grass when people were walking across it. Thats how quiet it was. You could see people wiping away tears. There were candles and balloons released, people there gathered in prayer. That was a majority of what this was for the Community Grieving the loss of four lives, two teachers, two students here at aplatchee High School as nine other people who were shot recover from their injuries according to authorities. All this as we continue to look for more information on what led up to this and how this incident was able to unfold. Sam . Nbc news Jesse Kirsch, thank you very much. Were still gathering information about what happened, but we know that there were multiple fatalities and injuries. And, you know, our hearts are with all the students, the teachers and their families, of course. And we are grateful to the first responders and the Law Enforcement that were on the scene, but this is just a senseless tragedy on top of so many senseless tragedies. And its just outrageous that every day in our country in the United States Of America that parents have to send their children to school worried about whether or not their child will come home alive. Its senseless. It is weve got to stop it. And we have to end this epidemic of Gun Violence in our country once and for all. You know, it doesnt have to be this way. It doesnt have to be this way. So we will continue, of course, to send our prayers and our thoughts to the families and all those who were affected. Turning to politics now, former President Donald Trump and Vice President harris are set to debate each other next week for the first time. That comes after their campaigns agreed to Ground Rules set by host network abc. The September 10th debate will take place in philadelphia, will use the same rules and format as the June Debate between Trump And President joe biden. The upcoming debate appeared to be in jeopardy when trump suggested he might back out of it when Harris Team sought to change the rules around muted microphones. But both campaigns agreed the candidates microphones will be live only for the candidate whose turn it is to speak. Trump spoke about the debate during a Town Hall on Fox News Last Night. When they said that they wanted to change the rules that they had agreed to, did they ask for notes . Did they ask for they wanted notes. They wanted to be seated and they wanted your mic hot. And they wanted a desk. After they already agreed to the other. Yes, but they wanted a desk from the beginning. In a letter to Abc News the Harris Campaign agreed to it muted Microphone Rule but stated that harris, quote, will be fundamentally disadvantaged by this format, which will serve to shield Donald Trump from direct exchanges with the Vice President. Now, in a separate story this is an interesting woun a spokesperson for the Trump Campaign says the former president believes, quote, Anyone Convict of a crime should be jailed. The statement came from trumps national Press Secretary to the new york times. It was in response to Jamey Davidson whose Sentence Trump commuted in 2021. Davidson was since convicted of a Domestic Violence related charge. Now, levt, told the times, quote, President Trump believes Anyone Convicted of a crime should spend time behind bars. Heres a Reminder Trump was convicted in may by A Manhattan Jury on 34 Felony Counts of falsifying business records, and he is scheduled to be sentenced on september 18th. Lets talk about the debate for a second. There was a bit of back and forth whether microphones should be muted or not. Ultimately the Harris Campaign conceded theyd rather have the debate than bicker over this. Is she that disadvantaged by this . You think this is a win for trump . Yeah, i think its a small win for trump. Iologist think theyre trying to tweak him a little bit. The last time around there was a reverse of this where the biden camp, the same people basically wanted mics muted in between. So i think theyre just trying to get under his skin for the most part. She was always going to debate, he was always going to debate, and a small rules change. Look, if Donald Trump wants to be heard in the middle of a debate, he speaks loudly enough to be heard on the other persons mic. Im curious on your take on the stakes here because harris has redefined the race. It seems a much tighter contest than it was with president biden. Has she peaked in a more Static Race . Its the question. I mean, i think if you if you went back in time a little bit, the conventional wisdom was always like, yeah, these debates dont really matter. And then the last debate happened and it ended a president s reelection bid. So i dont want to be the person saying the race is going to stay static after this debate because you never know, but i think given all the givens, given the things we watched, were looking at a very close president ial election. Its much closer than it was four months ago than what it was six weeks ago, meaning there was a reset and i think Kamala Harris has a little bit of an edge right now, but like a real small one. And were just too early to know whats going to happen. I want to finally turn back to what we talked about the tragedy up top, Gun Violence for schools, for parents bringing their kids back to school, this unimaginable, although its somewhat imaginable because we have Gun Violence all the time. Obviously we saw the Vice President veer off Script Yesterday in new Hampshire Talk about it. Youre on and off The Hill a lot. What is the mood around these things when it comes to lawmakers around Capitol Hill . Is this one of the things theyre going to shrug off on the republican side and say we did what we can, we have to increase School Safety . Again, you dont want to be then position of saying no, but weve watched this movie, you know, over and over again. Its not a movie for so many people affected directly by it and indirectly by it. On a larger, broader political matter, though, shes taken a few positions at odds with where she was in 2019 and togging about fracking, things like that, medicare for all, private health insurance, and now of course shes having these subtle but important breaks with the administration and the president she serves. I guess people who are not in israel or just watching are sort of curious how he can withstand all this pressure from his own cabinet officials, people in his government. Obviously hes got allies in it far right and hes tendsing to them but youve got massive protests in tel aviv, a strike. What is his standing right now domestically . Its really interesting to watch because what you had on monday the economy come to a standstill. The biggest Labor Union called a strike. The public Sector Shutdown and an airport even shutdown. The question, though, is how sustainable is this, and a lot of things people are looking at is will people go out in the Streets Day in and day out, which could cause problems for netanyahu politically. Right now that doesnt seem to be happening. The coalition remains intact. Not only the united states but certainly israelis seem to be stuck with him for the time being. People should understand the airport is literally the way in and out of israel. Theres not really many other airports that service that much traffic. Talk to us about the significance of that strike and what it says about the current state of the war. So the strike was awful. We found out yesterday through an indictment that the doj released, that there was a russian covert Misinformation Operation that involved allegedly what appeared to be conservative Media Talent through a company in tennessee. When you read the indictment, one, were you surprised . And two, when you looked at the details, it seemed to me, wow, that was a pretty savvy investment by russia. 20, 30 Million and you got an incredible amount of information into the u. S. Ecosystem. I think there were champagne corks popping in russian intelligence offices after this. This is a russian active campaign that seems to have worked. The propaganda goes from russian intelligence to russia today, their propaganda arm. Company in tennessee who hires these u. S. , rightwing influencers. The end of the day, 16 Million Youtube Videos were viewed. They had former President Trump on with one of these individuals. They talked a lot about ukraine. I can certainly make the connection between congressional aid being stalled because of opposition from trump and others in the kind of hard right of the republican party. At The End of the day, ukraine did not get assistance. I think the russian intelligence services certainly won the day here. I really dont think weve figured out how to counteract this yet. Molly, what do you make of this report that republicans are secretly hoping trump loses in november . Are you surprised by it . Im not but, you know, that could just be me. I love that you couldnt stop laughing when you were reading through it. I mean, look, the problem here is trump wants to end american democracy, right . He is running as an autocrat. He keeps making jokes about how hell be dictator on day one. I mean, you know, im sorry that people are upset about the tariffs, but im a littleor worried about, like, the democratic norms. Look, i think theyre doing this because these people are coming forward because they think trump is going to lose. Now, we dont know trump is going to lose. Remember, harris world is running like she is behind because of the Electoral College and because this is just a tight race. It looks like it could be a tight race. Nobody knows. I laughed that they could forget eight years of trump happened and they could move on. Obviously, if he lost, theres no guarantee he wont try to run again. Right. You have reporting on trump trying to pivot on issues like ivf. Tell us more. I just think that trump is trying now to pivot to a General Election, wants to make a case, you know, sort of step away from the extreme maga and make a case for voters who are not completely szealots. To make this case, he has to pretend to believe in things he doesnt. What he said last week is preposterous, that the government would fund ivf, which is Tens Of Thousands of dollars, though of us who know know, no guarantee of a pregnancy. He said trump gets a pass on this he said, if the government doesnt, well make Insurance Companies pay for this. Insurance companies are having trouble adjusting to climate change, are now going to cover tensf thousands of dollars . It is preposterous. One of the things ive noticed, which i think is a real problem that the mainstream media is having, is theres no followup. Well, you tried to end obamacare in 2017. What makes us think and so i went back and looked at the voting records for people like it shall for example, Jd Vance is for a Child Tax Credit. Wonderful. But when he was in the senate, the Child Tax Credit came up for a vote and he didnt even show up. If you believe in these things, why are you voting against them . If you are voting against them but saying you believe in them because its a General Election now, then, obviously, you dont really believe in them. Yeah, there is a bill out there to actually have Insurance Cover Ivf cost, but no republicans are cosponsor on it. Right. Molly, as he makes these positions and these shifts, everyone is sort of waiting for kind of a backlash among evangelical voters, among the antiabortion crowd. It never seems to come. Is there a threshold at which they say, you know what, were done with this guy . I mean, the students for life woman, students for life, quote, unquote, sort of trashed him and said, maybe we dont need to vote for him. But the reality is, its hard for evangelicals to abandon him now. A, he gave them those three very conservative justices who have really started unraveling a lot of the legislation the biden administration has tried to do. Student debt. They did overturn roe. You know, evangelicals have had a lot of wins. You know, they elected a thrice married adulterer and have been rewarded for that hypocrisy. Itll be hard for them to leave them. They have no other alternative, right . Right. Theres some hope on the Harris Side they can create a Permission Structure for some evangelicals, but, you know, once youve made this once youve said that you know, once youve agreed to the hypocrisy, i think its hard to walk it back. Right. There is no other alternative for them on this Side Akin to what a Jill Stein or Cornell West would be on the liberal side. Molly jongfast, thank you. Appreciate it.
