The suspect, a 14yearold boy, is currently in police custody, and because this is a uniquely american problem, it quickly became part of the american presidential campaign. At a rally in new hampshire today, kamala harris broke from her prepared remarks to address what happened in georgia this morning. It's just outrageous that every day in our country and the united states of america, that parents have to send their children to school, worried about whether or not their child will come home alive. I'm going off script right now. Our kids are sitting in a classroom where they should be fulfilling their godgiven potential and some part of their big, beautiful brain is concerned about a shooter busting through the door of the classroom! it does not have to be this way! it does not have to be this way. Compare that to what happened earlier this year, when donald trump was forced to respond to a high school shooting in perry, iowa, while he was campaigning in the state. It's a very terrible thing that happened. And it's just terrible. You hate to see that happening. It's just horrible. So surprising to see it here. But will have to get over, we have to move forward. We will have to get over it. Today, on his social media site, trump posted his condolences for the victims of the georgia school shooting, calling the assailant a sick and deranged monster, but making absolutely no mention of america's epidemic of gun violence that keeps claiming more children's lives over and over and over again. The contrast between the two candidates in this race is quite clear. The reason vice president harris was in new hampshire today was to unveil a new plank in her economic agenda. Tax credits for small businesses paid for in part by new tax increases on the wealthiest americans. Harris used that opportunity to once again draw contrast with her opponent. He plans to give billionaires massive tax cuts and to cut corporate taxes by over $1 trillion, even as they pull in record profits. His plans will add more than $5 trillion to the national debt and that is on top of the $2 trillion tax cut he gave them when he was president and when he exploded the deficit. We know how to count! we know how to count! ms. Harris made her case governor tim walz was campaigning in pennsylvania, which has quickly become the must win state of this election. At a campaign stop in lancaster, walz popped into a local grocery store where he and his daughter met with business owners and bought a couple of seasonal treats. Two weeks ago, governor walz's opponent, j. D. Vance went viral for his extra cringing and supremely awkward stop at a local donut stop in georgia where he appeared psychologically incapable of deciding which donuts he wanted. During his campaign stop today, governor walz made note of all that. We are big fan of pumpkin. We are pumpkin people. All right. I think that's what we are going to do. I think we get that one and that one may be. All right. Peaches, too. That's what i said. I can balance it out to have a new additional should a nutritional diet. I said look at me, i have no problem picking up donuts. Or will be pies, for that matter. While the trumpvance ticket spent the day preaching to the choir here tonight, j. D. Vance spoke at an event for the conservative group turning point usa, which supports donald trump. Meanwhile, he sitting for a town hall this evening on his preferred network, fox news and even though trump speaks almost exclusively to friendly outlets, he has broadened his horizons this election cycle. The new york times reports this weekend, his new strategy to court what is being called the manno verse manoverse. The aim here is to target young men and to exploit and deepen the existing gender divide between trump supporters and harris supporters. These streamers in the manoverse, all of whom are young, white men, have hosted trump on their online channels for what might technically be called interviews, but really, defy any sort of journalistic characterization. I would just do cocaine. That was really, yeah. So not just, yeah. That is down and dirty, right? yeah, i mean yeah. Is cocaine a stronger oh yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So you are way up with cocaine more than anything else you can think of. It will turn you into a howell, holy. You will be you will be your own streetlamp. With hardhitting conversations like that, who really needs journalism? trump will, of course, need to take questions from actual reports when he in vice president harris faceoff for the first time in a televised debate. In just a few hours ago, they released the rules for that debate. There will be no live audience. Candidates will get two minutes for each answer, as well as two minutes for rebuttals, and one minute for additional follow ups. Crucially, when one candidate is speaking, the other candidates microphone will be muted. Joining me now is jonathan martin, politico senior colonist. Jay marked, thank you jay marked this is not muted. I know they were elective to reluctant to when he was heard, presumably talking over her or talking during her answers. He will not be, at least his microphone will not be live. You think that matters from a sort of political standpoint? it's hard to judge now, alex, because we don't know what we are missing. It's kind of like, trying to figure out well, if trump had been on a hot microphone and had said something outlandish or offensive, well now we are not going to know because obviously, is not to have them a hot microphone. Which is precisely why the here's campaign was determined to keep the microphones hot because of course the strategy revolves around donald trump saying outlandish things. And holding that up to the american voter. It's interesting, the contrast. The biden votes in june didn't wynt the microphone to be hot and they didn't want to live audience, you recall, because they didn't want the trump show to overwhelm the debate. And they didn't want biden to take the bait, frankly, and get into the backandforth that they eventually still did famously over their golf games. Who can forget that. They harris folks, it's a different strategy. I think they don't think that the harris will take the bait and they did think that trump would blurt summing out offensive. And she hasn't taken the bait, even from even when his questioning his his response has been let's move on. I mean, i do think your point about the outlandish news of the trump brand being either a liability or an asset, here we see one were in a debate context, it's a liability. These interviews he's doing in the socalled manoverse where he's talking to young men about coke and how high you get when you do cocaine. That is like what he wants to be part of his brand message. It doesn't seem like he's been lured into an uninspected interview with a crazy youtuber. I just wonder, first of all, it's nonexisting before this election cycle. Am i correct in believing that? at least, i have not been familiar with, i think podcasts obviously were around the previous cycle. I don't know if you had this sort of external audience that these podcast have. What it tells us about trump is that it's 145th example of how trump breaks the mold of most candidates for president, alex. Typically, candidates for president want to do two things. They want to persuade voters and they want to mobilize voters. Persuasion and mobilization. Trump has never been interested in persuasion. It's all mobilization strategy. He's not trying to convince someone is wavering or perspective will skeptical, he is looking for more adherents who may not vote at all. And that manoverse is one example of that peer look when he rolled out after the democratic convention. It's not a centrist, republican who has come around to the maga cause, the strategy is to deepen and find folks deeper instead of broadening. He wants to find a person is not going to vote at all or was going to vote for rfk but could vote for him. He's not looking for a voter who was voting for harris or biden previously. I think there's a novelty in that strategy but also seems kind of risky. The new york times, reporting, they say i think it's like a third of the young men in this, adherents of the manoverse, they say they plan to vote for trump, did not vote in 2020. These are guys who were animated by sports talk and sneaker talk and not political top talk. And trump has opened up a portal in the universe to be part of their manoverse. It's a big assumption that they are actually going to get out there and vote. That's precisely the risk. These are not 60 plusyearold folks who had voted in every primary and general election, good citizens for the last 30 plus years. These are kids who maybe if they have one too many bond hits are not going to show up and pull the lever for anybody because they are not going to get off the couch and i think that's the real risk when you bank your campaign on mobilization and they will give any persuasion. Don't forget, nikki haley was winning voters for months after she dropped out of the race. In a republican primary, look. Some of those are democrats making mischief, but a lot of them are traditional kind of bushy republicans who have not gotten out of touch from trump, who are still out there trying to figure out what they do. Harris, trump, or none of the above. That bird to me is really interesting and they are not in the manoverse. Let me say for the record, i don't think the kids do bong hits, they have a lot of i would know. I would not know. I don't think the harris campaign is intending on having a gendered strategy by launching this reproductive freedom bus tour as they did earlier this week. I don't think reproductive freedom should be a gendered issue but the fact of the matter it is and in in american politics, but it is an issue where democrats have a proven track record of winning on. Abortion actually brings voters out. Sure, sure. If you are pursuing the i will call a gendered, but not intentionally so, perhaps more directed at women strategy of harris on the abortion question. Who do you think like which hand would you rather have? certainly, if you look at the history of american politics since the dobbs decision of june of 2022, clearly you would have to say that kamala harris strategy, i wouldn't recommend that either. I don't think that she's pursuing just a gender strategy but i don't think it would be wise if she was to do that but obviously, between those two, the more likely voter to come out to your point earlier would be the one we were responding to the issue for the issue of abortion rights. We have to talk about this study in contrast year. Is not just the ordering of donuts and j. D. Vance a seeming incapability between picking between cinnamon rolls and glazed goes with sprinkles and tim walz just obvious comfort ordering will be pies. All the above. When we talk about the white working class, he's camped out in pennsylvania. Kamala harris, the campaign and she will be in pittsburgh until the debate. They are really trying to plant a flag there and i just wonder whether you think democrats and this new ticket have kind of a better shot at that group of voters. A huge part of i still think it's going be really difficult and i think it transcends the nominees of the party. There are broader trends on education polarization in this country that are moving working class voters to the gop across racial lines and it's frankly the biggest challenge that kamala harris faces. Traditionally, democrats in the party of the working class, that is sort of diminished in recent cycles and i think the biggest challenge she faces, nevada, arizona, north carolina, georgia, pennsylvania, workingclass voters, especially working class men, white, black, hispanic, can she mitigate her losses among that group. That's going toúbe a huge driver as to whether or not she can that's why she's in new hampshire talking about a new economic agenda. Jay mart, the man who knows politics so, so well, even if he doesn't know that much about thc delivery systems. Not from the 21st century, at least. Good clarification. Today, the justice today, the justice department revealed what it believes are two new misinformation campaigns run with the goal of influencing the 2024 presidential election. One of those campaigns allegedly use social media to push elaborately faked dupes of websites like the washington post and fox news to trick western readers and disguise russian misinformation. The other campaign allegedly garnered to pay unwitting american political influencers to make nearly 2000 videos. Apparently, the influences believe they were making videos for an american company based in tennessee, but the client actually paying for all of this was allegedly the russian state run media company, rt. Luckily for us, the kremlin was good enough to write it down it's goalie here and an actual black and white. I wonder what that outcome could be? joining right now is? jim himes from connecticut, who serves as the ranking member on the house intelligence committee. Tentative, representative, thank you for being with me tonight. This is sort of an extraordinary story and one of the things that stuck out to me is the conservative influencers that they wanted to hire, they were all conservatives. Tim poole, matt christiansen, tyler hansen, and lauren sutherland. What conclusions are you to recruit influencers on the fact that they were all conservatives? well, i am not at all surprised. Two reasons. Number one, and i don't know if conservative is the right word. When you say conservative, liz cheney and ronald reagan who are pretty clear on russia. This is a much more radical thing. I would call it maga. Following, of course, there cold leaders cold leaders they love vladimir putin. He's an unconstrained dictator. He's not balanced in any way, and of course, they love that. The way donald trump did when he was president. If you show no skepticism, if you just suck that stuff up because it confirms your political beliefs, we are going to get the democracy that we deserve and it will be a democracy. I do wonder, there are also people that are effectively creating kremlin propaganda on their own. You know? the kremlin is aware of what tucker carlson was doing in russian grocery stores, which was basically cutting a video for vladimir putin and the thought because tucker carlson was necessarily on the payroll, that's just because that's what tucker carlson's politics are right now. You have a party that's coalesced around autocrats and dictators and i sort of wonder what the republican reaction in congress has been to these revelations. To use the phrase usefully, they are being manipulated, either wittingly or unwittingly, to be puppets of the russian dictator. Yeah. That's a whole other category of things. We've been talking about people who are actually being paid by the russians to serve the interest of the russians. You are right and i sort of alluded to this before. Vance, who says we should not eat anymore to ukraine. These are the policy opinions that are protected by the first amendment. It's a very different thing but just because they are protected by the first amendment doesn't mean that american voters should think about the opinions of j. D. Today, mass protest today, mass protest continue in israel five days after its military discovered the bodies of six hostages who are captured by hamas on october 7th. Hundreds of thousands of israelis have taken to the streets, demanding that prime minister netanyahu secure a ceasefire deal and free remaining hostages. But those efforts have stalled in recent days and many publicly attribute that to a series of 11th hour demand by netanyahu himself. Publish an editorial about the loss of the hostages last weekend, reading it was hamas terrorists who pulled the trigger, but it was netanyahu who sealed their fate. Another is really paper, published documents outlining then yahoos change in demands, which reportedly prevented a deal back in july, one that would have likely saved at least three of the six hostages who were later found dead in gaza last week. Netanyahu has denied that reporting, along with accusations that he is trying to perpetuate the war in gaza, which so far has killed over 40,000 people, according to the palestinian ministry of health. Joining me now is ben rhodes, former deputy national security adviser in the bottom the obama and mr. Chin, and of course, the host of pod save the world. I'm eager to get your thoughts on whether this is just an unvarnished attempt of the part of netanyahu to basically run out the clock until november when i suppose in his hopes, trump winds and any potential deal would require far less concessions on the part of netanyahu. Yeah. There's not a lot of mystery to this, alex. What's interesting is this a lot more public discussion of this in israel in the media and on the streets and even here in the united states. It's been clear for a long time that netanyahu's political survival is going to tie to the perpetuation of the war. He avoided accountability for the failures of october 7th. He tried to divide his opposition as he's always done and he is constantly move the goalposts of ceasefire negotiations. There was a common absurdity in the spring to joe biden, going out and presenting what he called an israeli proposal that israel's negotiators had talked about with american mediators but that prime minister men yahoo himself could never embrace and every report that we've gotten since then is yes, obviously, the leader of hamas, he has those demands. He wants the ceasefire to be an end to the war but then yahoos introducing all kinds of new things that he knows are going to scuttle these talks about is really control over certain border crossings into gaza, about the lack of movement for the people he seems to want to kind of run at this clock and we also know that's very much in line with what donald trump once. He doesn't want any kind of progress. He likes the fact that there's chaos out there and sometimes the most obvious answer is what we are looking at and that's why hundreds of thousands of his really is israelis are on the street. Like over and over again, the u. S. Keeps kicking and part of the crudeness of this metaphor, but the u. S. Keeps kicking and lucy keeps moving the football. A final proposal with egyptians and qatari negotiators but a senior american official acknowledged the previous plants have also been called file final but were also advised revise. How should the ministration be talking about what's happening right now in terms of these negotiations? first of all, there's nothing surprising. Like alex, back when i was in the white house, netanyahu did this all the time. He's oh negotiators for hours, dozens of hours, you know, hammer out agreements and the netanyahu would come in and just not abide by it. Then the talks would collapse and he would blame the palestinians. That was his approach to every negotiation with the palestinians involving this issue during his entire career in politics. And i think what's frustrating to many of us is, number one, they don't call this out. On the background, the senior ministration officials are complaining, but you don't hear joe biden and antony blinken coming out and saying that which would put pressure on him in israel because we've seen the biggest pressure on netanyahu politically has come from the families of the hostages who want to prioritize their loved ones over netanyahu's political survival. So they could be calling this out. More than anything they could be doing substantively is exerting some when joe biden called netanyahu to the strike that killed world central kitchen workers and threatened to cut off some assistance, they didn't open up aid crossings. Lo and behold, they opened up temporarily. When joe biden restricted one weapons shipment, just one back in the spring, they adjusted their plan or their invasion of rafah. But that's about it. We haven't seen them use the leverage that we have, overwhelming because we are the lifeline of support such as the diplomatic shield around israel, but also their capacity to continue this military operation. So they continue to do this approach works like we are going to hug in public and we will criticize him in private but that's gotten us, you know, very little progress, if any at all for the last 11 months. I do have to ask, though. You make the point that the israeli citizenry is so publicly disavowing netanyahu in a very big resounding way. And yet, netanyahu opposition in parliament has not coalesced. It's a combination of centrist, leftwing, arab parties, and yet there hasn't been this sort of convening of power that could actually threatened then yahoos stranglehold here. Netanyahu's strangled here. I wonder what has to happen for that to happen? we should also add, alex, that some of his senior military officials from the ministry of defense, some people in the idf, they have reportedly disagreed with him on the demands that's introduced so it's people in the streets. And some people in his own security apparatus. But what he's good at doing is playing coalition politics. His coalition has got a small minority of the israeli parliament and it relies on the support of far right political parties. Those people you know everything he does. So his play is clear. I need to hold the israeli right to the far right together and keep my opposition divided. That's been his playbook for a long time in terms of showing his political survival. Because there are these differences, the one thing that seems to coalesce the opposition is the prioritization of the hostages. Not necessarily the bigger play to pursue peace with the palestinians. That's not translated enough because they just don't have the numbers relative to he can hold the far right together. But the reason that's worrying, is he has to therefore do the bidding of his most extreme ministers in order to maintain power and that's why we see the war in gaza that we see. In this moment, in this country, what are latinos seeing in evangelicalism right now. Latinos are seeing the opportunity to thrive. Reporter: have you seen the numbers grow? it's been unbelievable. Reporter: who are they? who are these folks that are suddenly choosing this congregation. First and second generation immigrants. Reporter: spanish speakers? yeah, yeah. In my church reporter: his sphere of influence has expanded globally. Thanks in part to upandcoming spanishlanguage media company called voz media, hoping to tap into this new [ speaking in a global language ] reporter: since it was established in 2022, voz media has disseminated conservative spanish news online and on tv. This year, they partnered with daystar, the national christian television network that launched in 1997 by televangelist which has the potential to reach 90 million households across the u. S. , central, and south america, carrying concepts for influencers like pastor rodriguez. So we traveled to dallas to visit the headquarters and to see the spanish language news program they are producing for daystar. [ speaking in a global language ] voz in many ways labels itself as media for conservative latinos. What makes it conservative? [ speaking in a global language ] reporter: the brainchild behind all of this, behind reporter: the brainchild behind all of this, behind voz's vision and partnership with daystar, is orlando salazar, a wealthy businessman from texas in a latino evangelical himself. Salazar is a former vice chair of the republican national hispanic assembly, one of the nation's largest conservative latino organizations and he openly backed trump in 2016. Welcome to our home. Reporter: this whole building is owned by glenn back and that's the studios. Glenn beck. Reporter: yes, that glenn back. It turns the former firebrand turned broadcaster is a big supporter of voz's mission. Oh, hey, how are you. Reporter: orlando is giving us a tour of voz media and he said how you essentially house the whole company here. Oh, i mean, it what he is doing is so important, i think, just to have the hispanic community is the future. Reporter: glenn beck, was obviously a huge personality, what potential does he see in voz media? one of the first things i did when i first met him is he offered his content to us. Orlando, our content is your content. Anything you would like to use, and you want to use it in spanish, you are welcome to do it. I think it's interesting that daystar has typically tried to reach a predominantly white evangelical audience. Suddenly they are investing in spanishspeaking latinos. Why do you think they are doing that now? they see potential. They see a market. They see a market and they have a mission. Their mission is to reach the world with the gospel of christ. Is that your goal? we are a company. The world view i believe that we have is one that i shared falls in line with the founding of our country. If you believe it, praise like your believe it. Reporter: with the election just around the corner, day star and voz media are poised to play an influential role among latino evangelicals. With biden out of the race, it remains to be seen if they'll move towards democrats or become part of an enduring republican base. What is the power of the latino evangelical voting block? it will emerge as one of the most critical in the american electorate, bar none. We're not married to republican and democrats, and we never will be. Paolo ramos joins me to discuss that reporting right after the break. Stay with us. After the break. Stay with us. Lumineux is the first fluoride free toothpaste i've ever found that actually works. My dentist was blown away with how clean and white my teeth are. My gums and teeth are so healthy. It's crazy. You can get lumineux toothpaste at walmart and target. Groups like groups like evangelicals for harris and vote common good believe that evan jell ecal support for donald trump is declining fast. And they place the blame squarely on trump himself. You know, a lot of people ask us, how do you go out and change the minds of these evangelicals, and the truth of it is, we don't feel like we have to change their minds. Their minds have already started changing. To be blunt, donald trump is like a selfcleaning oven who does all the work for you. That's one metaphor. Who wins the largest share of the latino evangelical vote, which is the fastest growing group of evangelicals in the country. Well, i have jus the person to ask. Joining me now is msnbc contributor and host of msnbc's field report, the great paola ramos. Shs also the author of the upcoming book, because she's not busy enough, defectors: the rise of the latino far right and what it means for america. Congratulations on that. I don't understand how you are able to do that and amazing field reports. That's such a great and essential pack ang to be watching right now. But specifically the latino evangelical vote, who are latino evangelicals culturally and politically. I think that's the question that democrats are asking themselves. They're seeing this democrat coalition coming back together, coming back home, and then suddenly they're wondering are latino evangelicals coming with us or starting to replicate and align with white evangelicals. It's important to get that question right, because it has huge, huge longterm political implications. Fastest growing group of evangelicals in the country. At least 16% to 20% of latinos identify as evangelicals. That's a huge segment of and it's getting even bigger. Scholars like mark from calder university predicts that come 2030 50% will identify as evangelicals. It's so different from white evangelicals. A population according to the public religion research institute overwhelmingly believes that immigrants are a fundamental threat to this country. So going back to your question, who are they? as the pastor said, they're first and second generation immigrants. They're spanish speakers. So many of them are latinos coming from latin america already holding these evangelical beliefs. So many others are catholics converting to evangelicalism and the americanized children that are sort of following in their parents' footsteps. What's interesting is they fond belonging in these churches, and along the way they're becoming blit sized. That's where this rightward shift is happening. I'm so fascinated by this systematic longterm investments the right wing and conservative donors make in parts of this country that are sort of maybe overlooked by democrats, right? that seems to be what is happening right here with this essential group of people. That's the glen beck moment you see on the screen. That was so interesting. Suddenly you see glen beck and the metaphor is he's literally facing the browning of america. I think the pattern that's happening in the backdrop is the way i see it is a sort of conservative trifecta. It has one goal, how do we reach latinos. The christian evangelical movement that understands finally in order to survive you need latinos, why? because the population of white evangelicals is declining. The second is you have republicans understanding if you want to win the white house you need a significant share of the latino folk. You have folks like glen beck and salazar, powerful media people trying to tap into the spanish language latino audience. There's a debate happening within republicans that they understand that la tee enos that consume content in spanish are more likely to vote for democrats. Wow. They're targeting and trying to change the system. At the end of the day, they're not doing anything different. They're replicating what christian television media has been doing since the '70s,' 80s, '90s, during the reagan era, injecting the news and politic into this religious programming, just in spanish. They built this system in the late '70s and '# 0s for white people, and now they're using the same system for latino evangelicals. It's a fascinating piece, paola. All your reporting is extraordinary. It's a gift to have you in our stable. Thank you for doing it. Thank you for joining me tonight. Paola ramos, msnbc contributor and author of the upcoming book defectors: the rise of the latino far right and what it means for america. That comes out september 24th. I'm sure we're going to try to rope you back in here on that day. Thank you for your time. That is our show for tonight. It is time for the last word with lawrence o'donnell. Good evening, lawrence. Good evening, alex. I just
