You cant not win. And i got millions of more votes than that, and lost by a whisker. That was Donald Trump appearing to finally concede that he lost the 2020 election. Well see if he backtracks on that and get more from that interview, which took place less than a week before the first president ial debate between the former President And Vice president harris. Also ahead well go through the department of justices indictments of six senior Hamas Leaders for the October 7th terror attacks in israel. And meanwhile, israelis continue massive protests over the killings of six hostages in gaza demanding a Ceasefire Deal and blaming prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for their deaths. Good Morning And Welcome to way Too Early on this wednesday, september 4th. Im jonathan lemire. Thanks for starting your day with us. Well begin this morning with the department of justice, which has charged six senior leaders of hamas with terrorism and other crimes in connection to the October 7th attacks on israel. Among the indicted is the terror groups newly appointed political head. In a News Release the doj identified the defendants as the senior leaders of hamas who have played a key role in overseeing a decades long campaign of terrorism including on October 7th. The department filed the complaint under seal in february to try to give the united states time to take Hamas Thenleader into custody. That Leaders Death in July And Other Developments lessened the need for secrecy, and the complaint was unsealed yesterday. Meanwhile, in Tel Aviv large groups of protesters continue to call on prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reach a Ceasefire Deal and bring home the remaining hostages. Thousands took to the Street Yesterday for the third straight day. Among the demonstrators were relatives of hostages who delivered angry speeches. These protests started anew after the israeli military announced that six hostages were killed by their captors as troops were closing in on their location in gaza. Many are now blaming netanyahu for their deaths saying this is a result of the prime minister not agreeing to a Ceasefire Deal. And this weekends killing of those hostages, which included one Israeli American has added a new urgency to the White Houses efforts to try to end the fighting in gaza. White house national Security Spokesman John Kirby told Reporters Yesterday that the deaths of the hostages underscores how important it is to get a deal done quickly. Kirby says the White House is working on a new and final proposal, but he refrained from describing it as a Take It Or Leave it concept. According to the Wall Street journal, White House officials with knowledge of the proposal say this version is expected to be more detailed with specifics as to how the Hostage Prisoner Swap will work. What could trigger a restart in hostilities, and how long israeli officers can remain in the philadelphi corridor, staying along that narrow strip of land on the gazaegypt border has become a main Sticking Point for netanyahu. He says that troops need to be in that corridor to prevent hamas from smuggling in more weapons into gaza. Joining us now national Security Reporter for politico, erin banko. Good to see you this morning. You and have teamed up on a story about how the of the hostages has really complicated efforts to secure this elusive Ceasefire Deal. Tell us the latest here. What are the complications, and whats the overall mood . The u. S. Israeli officials think that at some point, any point soon a deal could get done . The main fear that u. S. Officials and israeli officials who we spoke to have sort of put forward is that theyre just basically worried that the killing of the hostages over the weekend will only escalate tensions between israel and hamas, potentially stalling the talks for some time. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu haS Publicly vowed revenge for those killings, and many inside the biden administration believe that he will follow through with that promise in the coming days and that fighting on the ground in gaza is set to get much worse this week. And obviously those tensions on the ground will then translate into increased tensions at the Negotiating Table. At least thats the Worry And Fear among the officials whom we spoke to. Now, this is very different rhetoric from what weve been hearing, you know, in the last month or so from both u. S. And israeli officials about the deal. If you remember several weeks ago President Biden and his top national security aides went as far as saying were very, very close to a deal, we might have something, please standby and the all the reporters and public really were waiting to see what the details of that deal were. They basically said theres just a few small things we need to work out and we should have something. And now what were hearing from the administration is that no deal anytime soon. There are still massive challenges and hurdles to be worked out. Yeah, and we just noted massive, massive pressure on Netten Hooto get something done. That Corridor Netanyahu says he wants to maintain an idf presence, not only will hamas not go for that but likely neither will egypt. And talk to us more about the belief in the administration, whether netanyahu really wants a deal at all. Certainly as we noted President Biden himself haS Privately become very skeptical. Theres a feeling inside the biden administration among top aides to President Biden and national Security Advisor Jake sullivan that Benjamin Netanyahu does not want a deal anytime soon. I think thats been a feeling inside the administration for some time. Now, despite that officials inside the administration have said we still think a deal iS Possible. Thats what they were telling us, again, throughout the last month or so. But that tone of voice and that sort of change of rhetoric has been more apparent in the recent hours after the killing of the hostages. Now what were hearing is this is going toby a tougher slog than we originally thought. You mentioned the philadelphi corridor. That has been a main Sticking Point in the deal for some time though not publicly talked about much. And one of the main players here often thought spoken about is ejimt, as you mentioned. Egypt is a huge player in these negotiations. Egypt needs to be onboard with whatever the u. S. And israel and whatever representatives at the Negotiating Table come up with because that corridor runs along the egyptian border. And so one of the main questions is who is going to operate that Border Crossing under this new deal . Israel wants either a third Party Security Contractor to come in and run that, that crossing, or they want to be in charge of that crossing, and that is just a No Go for hamas. And egypt is somewhere in the middle. And i think whatever iS Put on paper regarding that crossing, its going to be very tough to overcome for both israel and hamas. Yeah. And certainly the tenor of the talk certainly more pessimistic in recent days. National reporter for politico, erin banco, thanks for starting us off. We appreciate it. She should let him talk over her, not just let him but goad him into spouting insane Conspiracy Theories about the previous election. Number two, break from President Biden on policy. For ms. Harris to break from mr. Biden more explicitly than she has done so far would not be an insult to his legacy. Allies of Vice President Kamala Harris have kicked off a national Bus Tour starting on Donald Trumps Home Turf in florida. The tour will focus on Reproductive Rights, and it began yesterday with a stop in palm beach. Just down the road from maralago. Democrats like Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Senator Amy Klobuchar of minnesota took turns calling out trump for flipflopping on hiS Position regarding Abortion Rights. The tour will head up to jacksonville, florida, today with at least 50 stopS Planned in key states throughout the fall. Joining us now national Politics Reporter for The Hill julia manchester. Julia, good to see you again. So youve been writing about this Bus Tour in your latest piece for The Hill. Certainly, you know, a little gamesmanship by starting it in palm beach, but it also does highlight not just trumps flipflops and well get into that, but also just what an important Issue Abortion rights, Reproductive Rights remain heading into november. Really a huge issue across the country, jonathan, but also in florida remember as Voters Head to the polls in florida in november, they wont only be voting for president , senator, other down batt races, but theyll also be voting whether to enshrine Abortion Rights into the constitution. We know right now florida is under a sixweek abortion ban, so obviously this has been playing very largely in the state. Last week former President Trump seemed to suggest on what was thursday that that ban was too short, that there needed to be more time. You know, more time essentially for someone to decide whether to get an abortion or not. A lot of people would argue at six weeks of pregnancy a lot of women do not know that they are pregnant, so that ban has gotten criticism for that. But then that following friday former President Trump came out in favor of voting against the amendment to enshrine Abortion Rights into the states constitution. So democrats very much using that in their Campaign Messaging across florida, across the country. It is notable that they are starting in florida, though, starting this Bus Tour because we know that florida over the past, you know, 5 to 10 years has become more of a conservative deeply red state, so it shows that democrats could be feeling optimistic. Republicans, though, say this is at The End of the day gamesmanship. Julia, lets talk about the Idea Florida is in play or not. I think most democrats think probably not, but its useful for dems to play there, that way republicans have to Spend Money to try to counteract. That phenomena were seeing the Harris Campaign is awash in cash and theyre able to dramatic outspend the trump people as well as Spend Money down ballot. Its amazing 1 1 2 or 2 months ago we saw the situation was flipped. So democrats were being forced today potentially Spend Money in blue leaning states like virginia or even minnesota. But now you are seeing the Harris Campaign starting to play in these Red Leaning stateS Particularly in The Sun belt, florida being, you know, the top one of those states that may not necessarily be a 100 battleground state, but it is on that level below that, meaning its somewhat competitive but likely to be in Republicans Court going into november. Its important to point out that President Trump is not only on the ballot aS President but theres also a very important Senate Race there. Senator rick scott, the incumbent senator from florida, is running against the former Congresswoman Debbie Powell in that state. Rick scott, very interesting candidate. I mean going back to hiS Past elections whether its been for senate or governor, hes narrowly eked out those victories. Democrats say that makes them feel more optimistic going into this election, that they could potentially best him at least in the senate, though, it will be a tough race. One more thing, jonathan, thats interesting to point out about florida. Not only do you have this Abortion Amendment on the ballot, you have this amendment to legalize recreational marijuana in the state. Rick scott has come out against that amendment, though. Its said to be an amendment that could potentially galvanize a lot of young voters in florida. The question, though, is how does that states very important senior citizen voting Population Vote on that amendment. Yeah, youre right. Good point, one Story Line well definitely follow in the weeks ahead. National Politics Reporter for The Hill, julia manchester, thank you. Well have you back again soon. Next up here well go live to cnbc for an early look whats driving Wall Street after all three indexes saw their biggest losses since early august. Rough day. Time now for business, and for that lets bring in Cnbcs Arabile gumede, who joins us live from london. Arabile, tough one yesterday. And stock futures are In The Red again this morning after a Tech Selloff dragged the S P 500 to its worst day since august. Recap the losses for us, and what should we expect . Because we should remember when the markets had that tough slide in early august, they bounced back relatively quickly. Should we expect the same . Yeah, so thats actually going to be the Big Question mark, and i think a lot of people are speaking about positioning in this market and looking for welt. The market has dipped this month, does that create buying opportunity actually in this Market Picture . Its very interesting because you know how the saying is a Pinch And Punch for the first of the month . Well, necessarily wasnt the first of the month. Its the first Trading Day of the month state side, and boy, were there a few pinches and punches thats for sure. Because it was a significant draw down and a lot in technology stocks. You saw the likes of nvidia getting a hammering as well on the back of that. Big question around whether the tech stocks or a. I. Story is still actually in play, the weakness being seen there. Its run significantly higher, and lets remember nvidia is still up 120 year to date, so still a significant increase even though yesterday it fell more than 9 in numbers and even in premarket trade also down. That kind of gives you a sense of this market. Perhaps its run too hard and now youre seeing a bit of weakness come into play. Its also off the back of economic data. Thats going to be a key focus. That Pinch And Punch phrase might be more popular on that side of the atlantic, but we got it. Speaking is the manufacturing numbers and the industry it remains weak for the fifth straight month. Talk about how thats impacting the economy. Yeah, so what ultimately happened the figure came out at 44. 2 . Its actually showed an increase from Julys Increase of 46. 8. It to showed positivity, actually, by increasing. But lets remember the market generally feels that 50 is the line that separates contraction as well as expansion. So if its not reaching above 50, it showS Perhaps the economy is still expanding, but its not expanding i should say. But actually according to the Ism Manufacturing Survey they believe if it goes anywhere above 42, its actually still in expansion territory. So this data does show expansion. The big caveat to all this is that the market wanted a higher figure. That 47. 2 wasnt enough for the market, and so they felt as though this data waS Pointing towards a bigger slow down towards the u. S. Economy than was initially anticipated meaning the federal reserve would begin to cut Interest Rates just a little bit quicker than they had initially anticipated, and maybe theres further weakness in the u. S. Economy then. So a lot of panic seems to have set into the market, and one of key proponents why you saw the Market Drop off so significantly yesterday. We saw invid you take a huge hit and lost a huge portion of their Market Cap Yesterday and again we saw the markets bounce back quickly and of course well watch the federal reserve in their decision. Cnbcs Arabile Gumede live from london, thank you as always. Next up here well toin to follow the latest developments out of the Middle East as israel faces growing pressure to agree to a Ceasefire Deal. What we saw over the weekend was a heinous, the latest, you know, heinous murder, and thats what it was. And so we are going to be very clear on calling that out. If Anything Hamas has even more american blood on their hands, even more. That was White House Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre weighing on the u. S. Response to hamas, killing six hostages who were abducted during the October 7th attack in israel. Joining us now democratic Congressman Jake Auchincloss of massachusetts. Hes a marine Corp Veteran and serves on the select committee and joins us from his home state, the Bay State there. Congressman, good to see you this morning. So lets talk about the aftermath of the hostages being killed. How should the u. S. Respond . And what role do you think this will play in the ceasefire negotiations . Good morning, jonathan. Thanks for having me on. Hamas is a terrorist organization that took six young hostages, had them film videos to their family members, and then shot them executionstyle in a tunnel to prevent them from being reunited with those families. I dont think it should surprise anybody that this is an organization thats hard to negotiate with because theyre nihilistic. They have no positive Agenda For Gaza or for the Middle East. Every day in the Middle East is a series of hard decisions for the biden administration, but there needs to be a couple of guiding principles. First and foremost, israel has a right to defend itself and its citizens. And the insistence of the israeli government they need Security Guarantees aS Part of a deal are wholly reasonable because nobody would want or trust to live adjacent to a Hamas Run government. And that leads to the second principle, which is that hamas can have no role in postwar governance in gaza. And then finally the third, that Hostage Release needs to be the cardinal objective of both military and diplomatic efforts. Congressman, lets get your take on what President Biden said over the weekend, when he was asked if prime Minister Netanyahu was doing enough to get a Ceasefire Deal, to get those hostages out, he flatly said no. Do you agree . I do. And ive been outspoken about my frustrations of prime Minister Netanyahu as obviously are israelis given the Scale And Scope of their protest. I think its important to draw distinctions between the kinds of protests were seeing on the streets of israel slurs s the kind were seeing on the streets of new York City. What were seeing in israel are protesters who see the moral clarity of the situation but also are expressing political frustration with the leadership of prime Minister Netanyahu, who is not architecting a positive Agenda For Gaza that can truly drain hamas capital. Unfortunately, in new York Posi Agenda For Gaza that could drain hamaS Political capital. Unfortunately, in new York City what were seeing are protesters that are collapsing that moral and political dimension. Theyre prohamaS Prosecutorses who do not see that this organization killed innocent hostages, one of whom was an american, and continue to hold four other americans hostage. And congressman, lastly, earlier in the show, we talked about the latest deadly strike in ukraine. Russia haS Pummeled the country in recent days, lots of lives lost. Your latest piece for the Wall Street journal, you argued the president needs to do more to help kyiv. Briefly explain what you mean. Unlike the Middle East where the president is frustrated by others agendas in ukraine, he has unilateral agency to leave a significant legacy, the greatest legacy in europe for a u. S. President since fdr. You can do that with three things, jonathan. Number one, hes got to stand Side By side with Volodymyr Zelenskyy and define victory, a free and clear border, succession to the european union. Hes got to issue a onetwo punch to putinS Petro state. That means strikes on russian Oil Refining and tightening the sanctions on Russias Oil exports. And finally, secure that deal for a 50 Billion loan to ukraine, based on a 300 Billion in frozen russian assets. President biden does those three things, he is equipping ukraine to win this war. Democratic Congressman Jake Auken clausz of massachusetts. Thank you for joining. Just months before the 2024 election, Donald Trump has finally admitted that he did, in fact, lose the 2020 race to now president joe biden. I became president , then the second time, i got millions more votes than i got the first time. I was told if i got 63 million, which is what i got the first time, you would win. You cant not win. And i got millions of more votes than that. And lost by a whisker. Lost by a whisker. We should note, of course, that Donald Trumps lies about the 2020 election fueled the January 6th attack on the capitol as well as multiple state and federal indictments. Joining us now, chief White House correspondent for The New York Times, peter baker. Peter, always good to see you. What do we make of this. I assume this was more of a slip of a tongue and i doubt that Donald Trump is suddenly going to talk day in and day out about how he lost last time around. But also, the fact that hes still obsessing about the 2020 election, talk to us about the worries that some republicans have, that that is going to turn off, that thin slice of those undecided voters, those wobbly voters that he really needs to win this time around. Youre right, jonathan. ItS Probably a slip of a tongue. He hasnt suddenly come forward and acknowledged that this whole thing for four years has been the big lie, to use a phrase that ive read before. And i think that but it reveals in some ways, perhaps, that he knows what it has been. Thats the thing thats always been a really interesting debate. Does he know its a lie, and does it propagate anyway, or does he live under some sort of a different reality in which he actually believes that he lost that he won the election that was stolen from him, even though theres zero, zero evidence of that. And every body that has investigated it says its not true. And its really fascinating and kind of important. Do you want a president who lives in the world of reality or who traffics in brazen lies, knowing that theyre lies. He was told time and time again in 2020 after the election that he had lost, there was no, in fact, evidence of massive fraud that would have changed the results. He says, would have lost by a whisker. Worth remembering, 7 Million votes nationally in the popular votes. It was much closer in a handful of battleground states, Tens Of Thousands of votes changing that could have flipped the election. In that sense, it was a close election. I think youre right, a lot of republicans want him to move on. They dont want 2024 to be about 2020. Most voters dont want 2024 to be about 2020. They want it to be about 2024 and the years to come. Theres a lot of important issues on the table. Precisely right, and we shouldnt be holding our breath for a delayed Donald Trump concession speech. Lets talk about the debate. Assuming the last few details are ironed out, it is less than a week away. This coming tuesday in philadelphia. What do we know about how the two candidates are preparing . This is going to be a fascinating moment. Perhaps the biggest moment we have left in the 60some days until the election. A moment when tens of millions of people will be watching. Its critical, i think, for both of these candidates are already playing the expectation game. The last debate went badly for the democrats, but resulted in a change in candidate thats gone well for them. They want to see Kamala Harris prove herself on a national stage, if she can stand up to Donald Trump, whos a Big Physical And Metaphorical and political force. You know, he has a way of running roughshod over debate opponents, as weve seen over the last eight years. Sometimes that has bounced against him, as it did against Vice President , then former Vice President biden in the first debate in 2020. Both candidates are getting ready to try to find a way to get under the other ones skin. For trump, its most important to try to stop Kamala Harris momentum. He has had a pretty good debut and the question is can they then translate that into something more meaningful and sustained . The Harris Team saying that Shell Kind of camp out in the Pittsburgh Area this coming weekend, both campaigning and doing Debate Prep ahead of the debate itself. And peter, lastly, just talk to us about the dynamic of harris as that former prosecutor, staying across the stage from a convicted felon. How much do you think shell lean into that dynamic . I think youll hear that a lot. Certainly from her campaign, almost certainly from her as well. Its a comparison they like, its clean, relatively simple and easy to explain. It doesnt mean that trump voters who think that the prosecutions against him have been illegitimate or change their mind, but aimed at those voters that dont like Trump But Arent necessarily sure about Kamala Harris. Shes going to take that prosecutorial instinct that she has. Shes demonstrated it when she was a senator at hearings and No Doubt try to grill him about issues like this and it will be fascinating to watch. Chief White House correspondent for The New York Times, peter baker. Thank you as always. Well talk to you again shortly on morning joe. And thanks to all of you for getting up way Too Early with us on this wednesday morning. Morning joe starts right now. The first debate between Vice President harris and former
