Weave. You know what the weave is? i'll talk about like nine different things and they all come back brilliantly together, and it's like, and friends of mine that are like english professors, they say, the most brilliant thing i have ever seen. But the fake news, you know what they say? he rambled inthat's not rambling. It's the weave. It's the weave. Trump rambling about how he doesn't ramble, it's the weave. Despite the clear problems with his campaign, america's oldest ever presidential candidate took labor day off to golf and chill while vice president kamala harris and her running mate had a very busy long weekend with momentum on their side. Also tonight, j. D. Vance's close ties to the manosphere and his absolute obsession with getting women out of the workplace and back into the kitchen raising the many, many babies he and trump and their project 2025 pals would force them to have. Plus, his name was wally howard jr. , a murdered syracuse police officer. Strangely, one of howard's killers was set free by donald trump in the final hours of his presidency. And went on to strangle his wife. So why is no one held trump accountable for any of this? but we begin tonight with the beginning of the final sprint toward november. Happy back to school day if you're a parent of youngins or college kids and if you're not a mom who birthed children out of your body without using fertility treatments or adopting or becoming a stepmom, jd vance would like to have a word with you. Seriously, we're three days from the start of early voting in north carolina. We are just 63 days until the final voting day, november 5th. Monday was labor day, a holiday to celebrate the american labor movement and american workers, and the two presidential campaigns spent it in markedly different ways. Vice president kamala harris and her running mate, minnesota governor tim walz, held labor day events in michigan and wisconsin. Vice president harris later joined president joe biden in pittsburgh talking about the contributions of working people. You tell me who in wisconsin is sitting around saying damn, i wish they would give billionaires tax cuts and screw me over. I wish they would make my job more difficult and dangerous and make me work until i'm 75 years old. No one is saying that. No one is asking for that agenda. Wall street did not build america. The middle class built america, and unions built the middle class. That's a fact. Everywhere i go, i tell people, you may not be a union member, but you better thank unions for that fiveday work week. When unions are strong, america is strong. The harris/walz campaign is continuing to build on its momentum, shoring up support with voters in key states on key issues. Surrogates for the democratic campaign kicked off the fighting for reproductive freedom bus tour in palm beach county, florida, today. Palm beach county, of course, is also the home of the republican presidential nominee, donald trump. And where was he on labor day? holed up in his maralago resort, presumably golfing, of course. Whatever he was doing, he was definitely missing in action from the campaign trail and he's actually serious about running for president, he might want to work harder for his own sake. Hello prison and many fines. Meanwhile, a republican official will, quote, no longer have any involvement with the trump campaign after he sent an email sunday saying new hampshire was no longer a battleground state, and trump was sure to lose by an even higher margin that in 2016 and 2020. It is yet another sign that the map is shrinking for donald trump ahead of his first debate with vice president harris in philadelphia just one week from today. A series of battleground state polls from bloomberg found vice president harris and donald trump essentially tied in north carolina and arizona. And the vice president leading within the margin of error in georgia, michigan, nevada, and pennsylvania. In wisconsin, harris leads trump outside the margin of error. Nationally, a usa today suffolk university poll found vice president harris with a fivepoint lead over trump among likely voters in a multicandidate field within the margin of error. Meanwhile, the last time trump actually did work for his campaign, it was just more fearmongering and demagogging to maga voters at a moms for liberty event on friday. Our country is being poisoned, poisoned, and your schools and your children are suffering greatly because they're going into the classrooms, they're taking the seats, and they don't even speak english. The transgender thing is incredible. Think of it, your kid goes to school. And comes home a few days later with an operation. The school decides what's going to happen with your child. And you know, many of these childs 15 years later say what the hell happened? who did t to me? okay, first, donald, that's a lie. Full stop. And a dangerous and ridiculous lie. There is no school in america where a child has gone into a clooszroom and come out having surgery to alter their gender. There are literally no schools or teachers deciding what's going to happen with any child in any classroom except what's on the lesson plan for the day. So let's just be crystal clear about that, donald. Like that's just weird and a lie. But it is yet another reminder of how absolutely unhinged and cognitively impaired the 78yearold republican candidate is. In fact, if any other candidate spoke that incoherently about anything, we would say they should be committed. If joe biden said anything close to that, every major newspaper in america would be demanding that he resign or have the 25th amendment applied stat. But it's trump so you know, it's tuesday. And you would think his campaign would at least try to do something to stop him from drooling into his verbal oatmeal. But you know, maybe they're a bit distracted with their own things and laying out the groundwork for future careers outside of politics. In fact, here is what their republican national committee cochair lara trump, donald trump's daughterinlaw, has been up to. ♪ we're out of luck ♪ ♪ no this can't be denied ♪ ♪ you gotta be special ♪ ♪ takes a lot to put everybody first ♪ ooh, taylor swift, look out. We would be demanding the 25th amendment if joe biden said anything remotely as unhinged and just totally incoherent as that. But he's going around still high in some polls, not where he was because kamala harris has certainly unseated him as the front runner, but he's certainly still being able to for other reasons have this grip on a lot of voters that think this is the only way to bring america back to the days before women had rights and blacks and browns and other people of color had rights. And now he's imagining, hallucinating that children are being made to change their gender. In school. In school, with the instruction of their teachers. We're acting like this is a serious candidate. But he's lost the ability to even think while he's talking. It just comes out. It's like a baby just spitting up. And i think that because of that, even his most ardent followers have to scratch their head. You would think. And the fact he's even in the 40s is shocking given the stuff he says. And jemele, let me bring you in on this. I'm not even going to play it, i'm going to read it to you. They want wind all over the place, but when it doesn't blow, we have a little problem. That's what he is saying is called the weave. Where he starts out talking about the price of food, he then goes to bacon, which is food, to be fair to donald trump, suddenly he gets into wind. And we have a terrible problem. There is no world in which a candidate speaking in that way would not be evaluated by the media as in serious cognitive design. This is what the media did to joe biden for a full year. And he didn't say anything like that. Why are we not having a serious conversation, just on a media side, about donald trump's brain and where it stands in terms of its health? i think part of it is that everyone is so used to him sounding nonsensical that it doesn't really read as anything particularly different. But i think it does. And i think if you actually compare trump of today, the trump of 2016, there is like a measurable decline. But also, i think it's important i think it's important to emphasize not for voters, for viewers, right, for readers that the job of being president is in a lot of ways just managing and prioritizing crises and urgent things. And here is someone who is evidently incapable of staying on a singular train of thought for more than 15 seconds. I was about to say 30 seconds, but that sounds quite generous. It's 15 seconds. You can call it a weave and describe it as like stream of consciousness, but no, it's just babbling. It's babbling and sort of word association that in the aggregate you can maybe divine some kind of meaning, but if you're just actually kind of watching it and then as you did, like reading it straightforwardly, like reading a transcript, it's word salad. And it's i think it's indicative of someone who literally is not capable of being president. I think that's something viewers and readers need to know. I totally agree. I'm going to bring you in, i promise, david. But i have to come back to rev because you know him and you have known him 30 years, you met him in the '80s. He obviously is not, does not have the mental acuity he had back then. It's clear. And he wasn't that bright then, but he at least was lucid. I mean, we're talking about somebody talking about bacon and wind. I mean, children don't talk like this. And i really think that if people around him that care for him, they would usher him off the stage because this is becoming more and more ridiculous, and he has 63 more days to election day. Who knows what he's going to do. He may come out with rattles and a diaper in a minute because this is as ludicrous as that is. And what is troubling, though, is the people that are supposedly serious, members of the u. S. Senate, republicans of the house, that are rallying behind him. What i think we are missing here is where are all of the republicans calling on him to step aside or at least take an acuity test when we saw leading democrats do that to joe biden who didn't do anything near this. Yeah, elon musk literally said that joe biden, and he at one point said donald trump are too old to be president. Let me bring you in david. Let me play another thing donald trump did. He admitted he committed a federal crime. Here he is talking about whether or not he interfered with the 2020 election. It's so crazy that my poll numbers go up. Whoever heard you get indicted for interfering with a presidential election where you have every right to do it, you get indicted, and your poll numbers go up. I don't even know what to do with that, david. So, look, i think all this conversation about incoherence is so true of donald trump. And sometimes we overlook the big picture. The big picture is donald trump is a terrible presidential candidate. Like, historically terrible. This is one of the worst nominations a major party has made in decades. He is incoherent, listless, off message, and now he's confessing to crimes on the record. Contrast that with vice president harris, who is out there with working class union voters on labor day, while donald trump is sitting back at a country club that he owns, not that he's a member of, but he owns. He's not just a terrible candidate which is why he has this ceiling in the mid40s, remarkable that high, he's lost every popular vote he's faced. He's also a terrible defendant. He's still indicted by jack smith for interfering in the 2020 election, and he just went out there and said, i had a right to do it. And those statements are admissible in the jack smith case. Donald trump's play all along, we know in his legal vulnerabilities has been win the presidency and have the trials dismissed. If he loses this thing, he's facing trial on what he just said there about his right to interfere will absolutely be admitted in his trial. Jemele, i feel like donald trump's protection has been twofold, it has been the courts, john roberts and the supreme court, and the members of the court he installed, and the media. He has gotten a pass that i have never seen a politician get from us. And even on things like that, he's admitting to crimes almost daily at this point. There's a phrase i really like from way back under george w. Bush. It's from a speech i believe he gave on education. A speech for no child left behind, and the phrase is the soft bigotry of low expectations. I think trump is just the greatest single beneficiary of the soft bigotry of low expectations. No one expects much from him, which is itself kind of crazy given that he's running for president, but no one expects much from him, so when he does something that is unusual or that is incoherent or deranged, it doesn't register as newsworthy in the way it might if a regular politician did. If ted cruz did something that donald trump did, that would be news. It would be reported on, a big deal because we recognize that ted cruz is, whether you agree or disagree with him, a normal politician with normal proclivities and behaves in normal ways. So the abnormality becomes newsworthy. In trump's case, it's almost as if what's newsworthy with him is when he behaves in a normal manner. Then it's worth commenting on. Otherwise, the abnormality is treated by standard, which i think it's not good. You should treat the abnormality as a big deal because, again, he's running to be the most powerful person on the planet. Exactly. The trove of unearthed comments all seem to have one thing in common. It's basically a network of online communities, blogs and podcasts, that promote mascue lilty, misogyny, and antifeminism. In the idea that women should be nothing more than baby makers whose only job should be taking care of the home and raising children. A sentiment we have heard echoed quite a bit by james david. But his outdated views on women do not end there. No, no. This all, i think to a lot of people, sounds like crazy handmaid's tale stuff, but it's very real. There is this world in which these men want to force women to be incubators. Can you talk about where this ideology comes from? i think it comes from a pretty dark place, joy. I mean, could you four years ago think we would be sitting in an america where 1 in 5 women have to leave their state to terminate a pregnancy? i don't think there's really any chance it will be totally outlawed because i think the most mendacious thing about this movement now or this trend is not that it's an attack on women, but it's an attack on poor women. I just think that if jd vance's nephew and his girlfriend or wife were to get pregnant, they would be able to figure it out. I think this is absolutely targeting, if you will, it will have the biggest impact on mostly poor women of color. Who don't have the resources to find a way out here. So in addition, essentially, on a broader level, this has impacts globally. Trump tried to reinstate a global gag rule that would reduce funding to even talk about family planning to international groups. And i think the most mendacious thing about this or the most upsetting thing is let me say the quiet part out loud. If we elect somebody who has been found guilty of sexual assault, which in any language is rape, who calls women horse face or fat pigs, haven't we as a nation basically said we are normalizing misogyny? yes. I mean, yes. And i will say i was one of the people who absolutely could imagine we would be here, because those of us, and i'm sure you have as well, been following what they used to call the prolife movement, they have been literally saying they were going to do this since i was in high school, junior high school, and they have always said they were going to do it as soon as they had a supreme court that would do it, and people elected donald trump anyway. That is to me the disconnect. He said he was going to put justices on the court that would overturn roe. They did it and people acted shocked. Talk a little bit about this manosphere thing. If you pay any attention to it, you know that's what they want. They don't even think women should have the right to vote necessarily because they genuinely believe, and i think in all sincerity, women have no place in public life outside of the kitchen. Yeah, look, this is frightening, and it is kind of season nine of the handmaid's tale. I'm trying to focus on and it warrants more attention, how do we make sure that vice president harris is elected and this dystopia doesn't come to bear. What's unusual about that discussion is we thought this election was going to be a referendum on women's rights and bodily autonomy, and vice president harris has probably locked up the young female vote. What i think wins or loses this election, joy, is ironically whose vision for masculinity wins here, because a lot of young men are not so much moving towards the republican party. Your network has spoke very cogently about the largest gender divide in history. It's not men moving toward the republican party. They're just as supportive of gender rights as every other group. They're moving away from the democratic party because they don't feel seen. If you go to the dnc's website, it says explicitly, who we serve, and it lists 16 demographic groups, and as far as i can tell, cover about 75% of the population or specifically don't cover young men. So in some, they don't feel seen. The democratic party right now is facing the same issue that many universities and the dei apparatus has seen. That's when you're explicitly advocating for 75% of the population, are you advocating and representing them or are you discriminating against the 25%? so and also, we never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity. The infrastructure act will result in 70% of those new jobs will go to men without necessarily college degrees, but they didn't want to talk about it. The real opportunity here is this vision of masculinity i think represented by walz. It's one more of protection and service as opposed to toughness and strength where the republican party is trying to go, and i think the best example of that is a football coach enlisting his players because the lgbtq community at that high school, and this is a true story, felt bullied. And enlisting them saying you don't need to understand this, but men move to protection. So ironically, i think our ability to protect women is going to be based on who has a better, more appealing vision of masculinity that appeals to what is becoming the key swing voter group here, and that is young men. That is so brilliantly said, and so fascinating. Scott galloway, thank you. I appreciate that. Everybody needs to listen to your podcast. Thank you very much. Well said. Coming up, trump has been obsessing over migrant crime and blaming kamala harris, but it's not just a baseless attack. It's also a hypocritical one. Swiftboat attacks that helped sink john kerry's white house run in 2004 with republicans diminishing and casting tim walz's service in a bad light, and a willy horton style campaign, fearmongering about race, like what george bush did in 1988. The irony is, though, that while it is the same old playbook, it is a different candidate. And this candidate is one who disrespected our fallen soldiers by using arlington national cemetery for a campaign photo op, and turned his back on the blue by planning before indefinitely postponing a fundraising event for capitol insurrectionists dubbed the j6 awards gala, presumably meant to celebrate those who assaulted police officers. And by commuting the life sentence of a drug kingpin convicted of murdering a police officer, back the who? a new report that takes a closer look at jamie davidson's 11th hour commutation found that davidson bypassed the pardon attorney who had twice denied him. He sought relief directly from trump before becoming a reoffender after trump set his free. He's the first person granted clemency by trump known to be convicted of another crime. Joining me is the person who put this all together. Judd legham, thanks for being here. So i will note that donald trump was not a prolific pardoner or offererer of clemency. He did 143 pardons, 94 commutations, a total of 237. By contrast, president obama did 1927 including 1,717 commutations. Why this particular one, did you discern that? yeah, and i think the pardon authority is very important. It's designed to identify and correct injustices in the system. That's how prior presidents have used this authority. What president trump did, however, was issue a whole bunch of pardons, literally on his last day in office. The morning before he left the white house. That's when jamie davidson and others were pardoned. And what was particularly unusual about this is it did not go through the standard process where the office of the pardon attorney goes through and looks at the case closely and says is this a case where there was an injustice? is this someone who is a good candidate for a commutation or a pardon? and they took a look at jamie davidson's case a couple times and rejected it, but in 2021, jamie davidson had an attorney who also happened to be an attorney for donald trump jr. , other members of the trump organization, and this time, he was successful. Unfortunately, as i reported this morning, he was convicted a couple months ago in florida of domestic violence, authorities allege he strangled his wife. And other than the connection between the attorney, his attorney and donald trump jr. , was there any other way in which this case would have been known to donald trump? or was it just through the family connection? i think his attorney was a big part of it. He also gained the attention of a woman named alice johnson, who you might recall appeared with trump in a super bowl ad in february of 2020. And she advocated for him as well. It's quite a notorious crime in new york, in the syracuse area. If he would have remained there, we wouldn't just be finding out about this now, but he moved to florida and that's where this domestic violence incident occurred. Florida always seems to turn up in all of these stories. Donald trump's commutations and pardons, they were notable. Paul manafort, who was the notorious election rigor in ukraine. Who also helped donald trump. Michael flynn, who lied to the fbi about contact with the russians. George papadopoulos who was also implicated in the russian playing with our elections. He awarded political activity, denish de souza, steve bannon, pardoned him for stealing from trump voters. Roger stone, elliot broidy, who had really horrible crimes. Four blackwater contractors convicted of massacring 17 iraqi civilians. Two army officers accused of war crimes in sfaeg, and he promised to pardon the january 6th insurrectionists. Donald trump seems to have really been interested in those kinds of pardons and also a couple of hiphop artists. Yeah, and the other thing that's notable, joy, is that this is not the only person who received a commutation from trump who has had an issue with domestic violence. Jonathan braun, who was sentenced to ten years for smuggling drugs and money laundering, was recently charged with domestic violence with striking a 75yearold fatherinlaw who was trying to protect his daughter. This is someone who previously was accused of throwing someone off a bridge. Someone with a history of violence. So there were just this push, especially in those closing days, of folks who were not vetted, and now we're watching in real time this play out, and unfortunately, there's some very serious consequences to short circuiting that process. Very interesting. And yet, donald trump is attempting to accuse kamala harris of being the one who puts dangerous people out into the community. Judd legham, great reporting. Thank you. There is anger there is anger and grief on the streets of israel as protest erupted after six hostages were found dead in gaza. White house frustration grows with president biden singh israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is not doing enough to free the hostages and pursue a ceasefire. Netanyahu says he will not back down from the demand to keep israeli troops in gaza and this is how he responded when asked how he would define total victory in this war. I would define the end of war in gaza when hamas no longer rules gaza. We throw them out. I would define the end of the war in world war ii when the nazis no longer rule germany. Let's not forget that netanyahu was the primary politician whose policy was to keep hamas in power in gaza, to divide the palestinians. Stack we also have breaking news from the department of justice who late today announced political charges against the hamas leader and other militants in connection with the october 7 attack on israel. Six members were charged with terrorism, conspiracy to provide material support resulting in death, conspiracy to murder u. S. Nationals and other crimes. Joining me now is senior editor for bloomberg news. Every time i see one of these stories, the disconnect in my brain between the biden administration saying things like netanyahu is not doing enough and the fact that his own people in israel are saying not doing enough, responsible for all of this. Responsible for hamas being in power in gaza. Responsible for there being no hostage deal. Responsible for there being no peace deal. Why the disconnect between the way americans are looking at this end the way israeli's are looking at it? well, the israeli society is divided on this. The latest polls suggest that a majority of israelis want to see a ceasefire, but there is a significant portion of the population that supports netanyahu and that population usually centers around the extreme right wing political parties that make up his coalition. That coalition has held strong throughout the nearly yearlong war in gaza. They are fully behind him. They support his policies. There are elements in that coalition who want him to strike even harder in gaza, if such a thing is possible. As long as that coalition remains strong, netanyahu is in a position to a more the voices in the street, ignore the polls and ignore anything coming out of washington. That has been the secret to his durability. That is why he managed to survive this long. He always brushes off any kind of criticism wherever it comes from, whether it is within this country or from outside. Even when it is from actual hostage families. Here is the father of one of the six found dead. Take a listen. I think the vast majority of israelis have come to believe by his actions, not his words but by his actions, that he has been driven primarily by a desire to maintain power with a coalition in the israeli government and he has made choices to pursue this fantasy of total victory over hamas, a terror organization, no doubt. But this idea is a messianic one from his coalition partners and not realistic. Bobby, we will note again that netanyahu faces criminal indictment the moment that the war is over, so there is self preservation. There is the idea that he wants donald trump to win, so there is some aspect of what he does that is also about helping donald trump become president to free him further. But the coalition you described and this gentleman described as the coalition has gotten him charged with war crimes. That has gotten him charged in the hague. That has gotten the idea of genocide placed on the table because the rhetoric proven by the south african coalition at the hague is strictly genocidal. So how is it possible that the u. S. Administration looks at that guy and says that is our partner, that is our friend, we are going to keep arming that guy? that has been the position of the biden administration and as you know that has bipartisan support in both houses of congress and that is the card that netanyahu has played consistently. There may be occasional finger when gave finger waving from the white house, but when it comes to material support the united states is fully behind israel, fully behind netanyahu. In the last 24 hours we have seen just a little crack appear in the western support for israel. The british government under keir starmer has announced they are suspending the licenses for some military material. I think 30 items out of 350, but it is not nothing. That creates space and if biden now wants to follow the british example, he has the opportunity to do so and the support, the rallies that we are now seeing after the deaths of the most recent hostages, that is not nothing. I know i started the segment by saying he has the ability to ignore the voices in the street, but this is the loudest and strongest protest we have seen since october 7 last year and that's not nothing. Of protest are sustained, if they continue, then we can cling to hope that perhaps some element of the rockhard coalition behind him can be softened and peeled away. The thing about hostages, is that it seems to so many israelis that this particular case, this particular tragedy was so preventable. These people were alive three or four days ago. This has been on the table for three months now. So if netanyahu had taken the deal a week ago, two weeks ago, two months ago, these people would still be alive. If he had taken it months ago, 40,000 palestinians would still be alive with something like 14,000 children. Thank you so much. That is tonight's reidout. All in with chris hayes starts now. Tonight
