A special Labor Day edition. Enjoy the 5 00 p. M. Hour, ari. I was going to say, nicolle, it doesnt feel right being here 5 00 to 6 00. Doesnt feel right. But at least i got to see you. Yeah, have a great show. Its a great time. I was happy to come in early. Youre now here early. Its great to get to see more of you. Absolutely. And have a great rest of the Labor Day with you and yours. Welcome to the beat, everyone. Im ari melber. It is Labor Day but theres a lot going on in the world, on the campaign. The news doesnt stop. I can tell you Vice President harris is on the campaign trail. You see here the preparation with President Biden. Theyll be campaigning on this Labor Day holiday. We can also show you them arriving. This was moments ago. So were going to bring this event to you here in this 5 00 p. M. Eastern hour. As i mentioned, theres kamala i should say with the president. But i mentioned with my colleague Nicolle Wallace were here in the 5 00 p. M. Hour. Were going to bring you these two, the president and Vice President , campaigning together here, First Time since the dnc, big deal, were going to bring that to you live this hour. We think its about three to five minutes away if you want a rough estimate. Now, i can tell you harris was in detroit. She delivered a big speech surrounded by Union Leaders and tried to contrast her and the biden Administration Record with Donald Trump and hit the former president over his policies. So intends to pull us back, including back to a time before workers had the freedom to organize. He appointed Union Busters to the national labor Relations Board. [ boos ] and he supported socalled right to work laws. We fight for a future where every worker has the freedom to organize. [ cheers and applause ] and one Union Member spoke about project 2025 and its effect on union workers. Trump said he was going to protect our jobs and then lost nearly 300,000 jobs on his watch. With the project 2025 agenda it would give him power to go after the right to organize and it would try to dismantle our unions and then make life even more expensive for us. The race is also kicking into gear. We know the general election traditionally starts after Labor Day. This year quite different with a more recent nominee in Kamala Harris. But total it all up and you have just nine weeks till the actual election day. Early voting begins in some states as soon as september 20th. Thats minnesota and virginia. Ten days after that first trump debate. You can see everything coming down the pike. There are signs that trump is also still struggling to adjust to his new opponent and hes on defense over several issues. As the post puts it with little chance of improving his Standing Quote Trumping advisers say the only option is damaging hers. The bulk of Tv Spending by the campaigns and their allies were attacks on harris. It is a busy Labor Day start to the general election. Biden and harris coming out moments away, well bring you that, but we are joined now by vanity fairs Molly Jong Fast and professor of politics and journalist at morgan State U Jason johnson. Welcome to both of you. Jason, what do you see on this Labor Day . What i see is the democrats laboring across the country. You have obviously harris and Joe Biden are campaigning together. You have Tim Walz and his wife are in minnesota and wisconsin. You have Doug Emhoff down in virginia. But for some Reason Gonld Trump and j. D. Vance have no scheduled events on Labor Day. Seems like two campaigns going in very different directions on a key weekend that at least in Political Science terms is the real beginning of the campaign. And lolly, weve heard a lot about interviews. It is a tradition to have a sort of joint interview with a running mate. And the harriswalz campaign, their ticket did that heading into this weekend. Some people may have heard about it. It was with Dana Bash on cnn. Some may not have caught the whole thing. Were just going to play one part of it here, relatively new, where harris again hits this key theme about wanting to turn the page from trump. We have had in the former President Someone who has really been pushing an agenda and an environment that is diminishing the Character And Strength of who we are as americans. I think people are ready to turn the page on that. Molly, your thoughts, a, on sort of the down the middle i dont want to say Centrist But Sort of traditional Campaigning Messaging she was doing in that interview, number one. And number two, what weve learned since then is that it on the channel that it aired, a competitor, full disclosure, whatever, fine, they had absolutely huge interest in the interview, which i mention as a political fact. They had more than quadrupled what would be the typical audience there. About 6 Million people. Which means just like we saw at the dnc there seems to be an awareness of when she and walz do things, people are checking it out at the very least. Whether they vote for them we dont know yet. Yeah. This is the really interesting thing about harris. She doesnt need to just run as antitrump. People are interested in her as her. And you see that from the money shes raised, from the volunteers, from the sort of army of people who are Voter Registration numbers are crazy. That these are proof shes actually popular as herself. And so what shes doing, which i think is very smart, is shes sticking to policy. For example, what were seeing with Labor Day, right . Donald trump has never been a Labor President , and many parts of the Republican Party have really organized against labor, like thinking of right to work laws. So you really do have a democrat democrats really can run on labor and run on unions and support for unions. And youll remember biden actually marched with the union. So this is a good way to sort of show not only to be antitrump but to show what harris can do. Jason. Yeah. Ive always thought the importance of that interview, to be perfectly candid, was more for the Acela Corridor Media elite than what actual voters care about. Because as molly said, the voters are hearing what they want to hear from harris because every time she and Tim Walz are on the air the ratingsing skyrocket. Theyre filling up stadiums. And thats not just about ego. Thats about men and women, young people, old people, all races, all colors and creeds saying hey, i am interested. And once somebodys interested selling them on your policy is much, much easier. I think whats going to be interesting going forward is what happens when harris does, say, a Press Conference with a bunch of random questions . I know shell be fine obviously because shes been sitting Vice President of the united states. But as she moves from the sort of insurgent new candidate into the traditional candidate over the last eight to nine weeks its going to be very interesting to see how that may change how specific her policies and how specifically her Policy Presentations get even as theyre still building at rallies, registering voters and quite frankly recently expanding the electoral map if they think they can win with. Yeah. And both of you mentioned sort of the context of Labor Day. Which is a day off for many americans. Not a day off for politics and the news. And the Trumpwalz Ticket Sort of taking a Back Seat. Harris not only campaigning but going out with President Biden. Its also a fitting day to look at what Donald Trump has said recently when hes talking to his sort of Billionaire Allies because him and musk got themselves sort of in trouble on their conversation recently in talking about labor crackdowns. Take a listen. I mean, i look at what you do, you walk in, you just say, you want to quit . They go on strike. I wont mention the name of the company. But they go on strike and you say thats okay, youre all gone. Youre all gone. So every one of you is gone. Jason, thats actually a kind of textbook violation, theres already been a complaint filed about it. Of course whether you can hold a company responsible for a politicians sort of unhelpful banter if you want to call it that remains to be seen. But i thought it was a fitting piece of sound here for Labor Day. What do you see there in that contrast . Jason. I mean, there is no greater contrast, there is no greater Water And Oil than a guy who came to prominence over the last 10 to 15 years by firing people. Labor day is supposed to be the day where we talk about labor getting together and organizing against corporate forces in order to give regular people more rights. The man became famous saying i dont care how good you did if i have some particular pique of the day i can get rid of you. And bragging about it and laughing about it with a person who is quite arguably for all the companies hes run the most famous acquisition he has recently theres ain person alive, not a Tech Reporter alive who will say hes run this company better. I think that shows how out of touch Donald Trump is. Maybe this was okaye was never the Popular Vote winner, maybe its okay to have this kind of brash obnoxious Antiworker Attitude in 2016. Its not where americans are now. Its not where postcovid americans are now. And it just shows that he doesnt really know how to connect with people. Maybe that works with elon musk. Its not going to work with somebody in the middle of michigan. And molly, we have in the corner of the screen the preview shot. Weve seen Biden And Harris arrive there. They havent of course yet taken the stage. Were going to bring people this live Labor Day rally. But im curious if you want to reflect on the politics of them rejoining. On the one hand by all accounts they have, Biden And Harris, a great Governing Relationship and she navigated the difficult period for the administration when there was the question about whether he would stay in the race or not. She navigated it, you know, with great aplomb. But politically you cant avoid the fact that the whole reason shes the nominee is that many people in the democratic party decided biden was not anymore the best possible choice for the future. Which is not to say that there wasnt a lot of thank you Joe Signs at the dnc or that there are states where he can be helpful. So im curious what you see here in what is fundamentally a political dance theyre doing as they come out Today And Campaign in certain places where its helpful while she still tries to strike her own identity. Yeah. I mean, look, we have seen before President S not endorse their Vice President s at great perl. Weve seen that happen and the candidates have lost. And what i think biden did which was really excellent was there was this Threeweek Period where he was sort of came to his own decision and then he was able to fully endorse her. And even when you would talk to people at the campaign they would say he says if you want to honor me make her win. And that is a really great message because remember, he didnt step down because he wasnt a good governor. I mean, he was good at governing but hes the oldest peshs to have ever run for president. Right . Hes 81 years old. And he couldnt do the campaign. And by The Way, now republicans have run on age and mental acuity. Well, now theyre running the oldest person to ever run for president. Which i think is pretty interesting. Yeah. That again is a big part of the shift. Molly and jason, i want to thank both of you. Let me tell folks whats coming up here as part of our special Labor Day programming. Ill be with you here over the course of these next two hours. We have the pittsburgh rally. And when they step on stage, the president and Vice President , well bring it to you live. We also have a lot of other stuff cooking. Kamala harris leaning into her prosecutor cred. Oo this is a good book title. When he was living in a what were watching there is senator casey, as we are taking in the politics of this Labor Day. President biden and Vice President harris will be speaking there in pittsburgh. We think i mentioned earlier could be a couple minutes, could be a few minutes longer than that based on the evolving speaking schedule. But when Biden And Harris speak we will bring it to you live. As for our special coverage right now we want to turn to how harris is leaning into her experience as a prosecutor and often trying to build the Campaign Theme of d. A. Versus defendant. Now i want to take you back to something that is newly interesting to a lot of people. In 2019 during the 2020 Campaign Cycle we went to philadelphia. A big important place in the politics of the Electoral College right now. And Kamala Harris spoke about criminal justice reform. With something different. Former inmates and people who have been in the incarcerated community and their Family Members. And we discussed how she said she wants to change a failed and broken system. The system is woefully inadequate in preparing incarcerated individuals to reenter society in any meaningful way other than subsistence living. Yeah. You did excellent work in california in making sure higher education was available in every prison. Mmhmm. What other things will you do as president to ensure that people can can get above that Razor Wire Ceiling that most of our reentry efforts limit them to . Yeah. And theres a lot to be done. But i will also connect it with what we need to do immediately when folks are released. Because weve got to not only ban the box, weve got to end the federal bans on federal support going to folks for everything from snap to College Loans and Student Loans to housing. All these bans make the education we can offer meaningless if when people come out they dont have access to the resources that help everybody else actual go on to those paths for employment and higher education. So within the incarcerated population there is its not only the work ive done in the past as you said around education and the partnership that needs to go into it. But also i truly Cannot Underemphasize enough the need for real resources going into mental health. And treatment. You know, i look at issues like childhood trauma. The number of children that we have growing up with trauma because lets be clear, poverty is traumainducing. Being exposed to violence is traumainducing. And when we dont have those interventions they normally lead to what we end up seeing in the incarcerated population. And we have not ever had any real intervention. And so if were going to help people get on their feet when they get out, that has to be a big part of it. In addition, it has to be about getting people on the pathway toward the jobs that need to be filled. And so that means having the education that is about getting that certificate and not just woodshop, im so sick of these programs that im just sick of it, honestly. Im sorry. But i mean, literally if you go you know, its about the quality. Its not just saying theres going to be training because we all know that training that usually happens in jails and prisons is nothing compared to the jobs that need to be filled and that pay enough for people to have a quality of life. Weve talked so much policy, which i think is a testament to the Seriousness And Expertise in this room. All of you, vivian and of course were dealing with an expert. I want to end on people, not policy. Okay. Good. Youre here talking to people im just going to be direct. Im a reporter. So ill say what i think is true. Youre talking to people who as we discussed have been told through the rules and through the treatment oftentimes their voice doesnt matter. Even after they pay their debt to society their voice doesnt matter or they dont get a voice anymore. And on the panel before you came out here of course on issues you know people were speaking about the different State Levels to reform that. I think in closing with whatever else you want to say in closing Buzz Weigh want to give you a final shot, could you tell us and the world, because the worlds watching obviously beyond this room, why was it important to you to come have dialogue with people who have served time, with Family Members whove been through this . Why is it important that these voices are part of how we pick the next president . Well, these are the leaders. This is a room of leaders who understand what is actually happening in the system. And who know that if we are again, if were going to be true to our values and if we want healthy communities, if we want to be true to the values of redemption we have to agree that the Incarceration System of america is one of the greatest failures of Public Policy in our country. It is truly it has been the emphasis has been on punishment. The emphasis has been on pushing people out instead of allowing people a way back in. And it has not been thoughtful. It has been punitive. It has been a result of wars that have been waged on americans. Like be clear about that too. So much of what has led to Americas Mass Incarceration has been based on domestic wars. The war on drugs. That was a war on our own people. Thats how that actually played out. And so these are prisons that are like federal Detention Centers as though these are people who were threatening our Nations Security. I mean, if you want to talk about a threat to the Nations Security talk about Donald Trump. Preach i know. If you want to talk about lawlessness anyway, the Bottom Line is this. We need to reform the system. I wanted to be here to be able to listen, to be able to share my piece of this process that has been a process of people shedding a lot of blood, sweat and tears to try and have america understand that it is a broken, failed system and must be reformed. And im honored to be among the leaders who are here, and i thank you for the invitation. Kamala harris there speaking when she was a candidate in 2019 at a justice event. We wanted to show you that. Newly relevant. While on your screen you can see the ongoing rally in pittsburgh with remarks expected from President Biden and Vice President harris. Their big Labor Day finale tonight. Well bring you both of their remarks when they step to the stage right here on msnbc live. Also coming up, Wise Words from Eric Holder as we think about Law And Justice this Campaign Season. Thats coming up. Is Campaign Season thats coming up 4x more dust for a clean even mom approves of. That reach making hard to reach. See you down the line. Looking at live pictures from a Labor Day rally in pittsburgh. President biden and Vice President harris will be speaking. The governor up there right now. Were going to bring the president and Vice President s remarks to you on this Labor Day live when they come in the moments ahead. Right now our programming continues, and i want to bring you a conversation with someone who knows all about the challenges were facing. Former Obama Attorney general Eric Holder. And we get into Voting Rights, Supreme Court challenges and of course his legendary relationship with The First Black President , barack obama. Lets start with what youre doing now, and then we have some throwbacks. Okay. Democracy. Representation. And the sometimes boringsounding redistricting or gerrymandering. Of all the things we could do, and we just showed some at your level, this is what youre focused on right now. Why and what are you doing . One of the things i really focused on when i was Attorney General was the protection of Voting Rights and i made the determination that in my postgovernment life i wanted to continue that work and i really decided to look at that which was most pernicious in our country with regard to voting and i determined it was the problem of gerrymandering. The packing of people into districts or the cracking of people from districts such that you dilute the power of the american people and you have politicians picking their voters instead of voters choosing who their representatives ought to be. So The Way you put it right there is how in the World Of Culture and comedy, thats how trevor noah, who i think is such a gifted communicator, he put it slightly similarly. Take a look. With gerrymandering the politicians choose their voters. The voters dont choose them. Thats weird. Its back to front. Its like getting to your uber and then your drivers in the Back Seat and hes like Start Driving [ bleep ], im late. That idea that this is backwards, have you been able to get that across to the public when there are so many other things people are obviously concerned about . Yeah, i think we have. Weve raised the consciousness of people about the importance of gerrymandering. We have a component thats called all on the line, which is focused on mobilizing people at the grassroots level to care about this issue. We brought lawsuits that we have won in state courts, in the united states Supreme Court. Let me show you some of those. When you talk about the different states. Because on the one hand you are winning some of these suits. On the other hand it can feel like this endless whackamole. Heres what politico put together. Georgia, louisiana, New York, south carolina, florida, utah, kentucky, north carolina. This is a whole bunch of places where this is constantly going on. Is there any wider solution than the whackamole . Well, i think under the present system that we have its going to be incumbent upon us to continue to bring these lawsuits. Were in an era of perpetual redistricting. It doesnt happen on just an every tenyear basis. Were still in the process of doing what should be the 2021 redistricting. So we bring lawsuits. We also are supporting candidates who are important in the redistricting process. And yeah, but theres a solution. That was the John Lewis Bill that was before the last congress that would have banned partisan and racial gerrymandering as a result of the filibuster, however, it could not get through the senate, though it had been passed by the senate. President biden said he would have signed it. But we couldnt get a sufficient number of people, including democrats, to have a carveout to the filibuster. So what do you need there . Do you need a kind of a mass Peoples Movement to get that to the level where theres enough pressure to like you said do a carveout . Theyve done that for judges. A lot of people think this is as important to the issues as judges are. Yeah. Is that what you need . Whats the alternative . Well, i think the carveout would be the ultimate thing. But i think before we get to that weve got to continue to do the things we have done. And as i said, that is to bring lawsuits, to support candidates who will stand for fairness. We here talk to people at the summit, and you are at the summit of law. Theres only two summits. Theres a Supreme Court and theres being the top attorney in Law Enforcement Official of the united states federal government, and thats what you were. But the big issues go back to the Supreme Court. So what do you see today in that summit of the Supreme Court . Does it have a bigger Ethics Problem than it used to . Is It Fixable . I certainly think the court itself has a legitimacy problem both in The Way it was constructed, the things that senate republicans did to hold open a seat and then to rush through the nomination of another justice. And also The Way in which the court has ruled. You know, the law is governed by a number of things, precedent being maybe chief among them. This court has when it wanted to just ignored precedent, overturned decisions, the Roe Decision being maybe the most prominent, and taken away rights from the people of the united states, which is a first. I mean, we are always trying to come up with ways in which we identify and Grant Rights to american citizens. This court took a substantial right away from people of this people of this country. Mmhmm. So thats a little bit of what youre doing now, having been at the summit of american law. We also want to look at the other sides of you because thats all very serious and thats how many people know you. And yet too many people think im a stiff. What always strikes me is that i interact with people and they say youre actually pretty funny. Yeah, i think im a pretty humorous guy. And their only sense of me is what they saw at congressional hearings or when i was giving speeches about something. You know, theres a whole other dimension to me. Well, there we go. Lets get into it. We want to go late night. Here on the Summit Series its maybe dusk. But were actually going to go late night. All right. And remind people theres this other holder. This is sometimes when you were hanging out on those shows. Lets Take A Look. Criticism of me . Yes. Im going to be real quick. And im sure im 100 wrong. There were not im supposed to be your guest. No, i know. Thats why i was really nice to you up until now. There are these things called facts and then theres this other stuff ive got to write that down. Facts . Facts. Facts. Facts. Okay. Its just been a while. They still exist, you know . And then we found one peek of this in public that we wondered what its really like in private, which is you giving your boss, president obama, a hard time about what else, basketball. So we wonder what else happens when the cameras are off. Take a look. Im from New York city. The home of basketball players like nate tiny archibald, kareem abduljabbar. The President S from hawaii. [ laughter ] now, im just saying that as background. Hes a good ball player. Hes still my boss. When i become a civilian, he will still have access to all things about me that, you know, that you all are worried about, i suppose. And i will now be worried about. Whats the hardest time youve given him when you guys are alone . About what topic . Well prove youre not a stiff. Probably about chicago sports as opposed to New York sports. Hes got this mistaken belief that, you know, Michael Jordan is the man as opposed to kareem abduljabbar, that the bulls are better than the knicks were at their height. A whole range of chicago athletics. The president , as you know, got a big boost from shawn carter, jayz, and then paid it back. President obama actually helped induct him into the hall of fame. And this is about leadership but its also about race but its in his words and i thought it would be interesting to run by you. Do you know the Song Murder to excellence . Mmmm. Jayz says black excellence, opulence, decadence, tuxes next to the president. Im present. Success never smelled so sweet. I stink of success, the new black elite. They say my black card bears the mark of the beast. I repeat, my religion is the beat. My verse is like church, my jesus piece. Now please domino, domino only spot a few blacks the higher i go. What up to will . Shout out to o. And i think that could be obama or oprah. But then he says, quote, that aint enough. We gonna need A Million more. Kick in the door, biggie flow. Im all dressed up with nowhere to go. Im curious just your reflection on that artistic reading of you there being with some of the other people but is it not enough people in the room . I mean, i was the first this, the first that, the first that. And always wonder, you know, where are the other folks who look like me . And we need to focus on that. This is ultimately the thing that i think will put this nation in a better place. When we value diversity, when we value differences as opposed to using those implicit biases to look at somebody and to assume, well, he or she doesnt really deserve to be in the room, theyre here for some reason other than the abilities that they have. Right. Before i let you go weve got a lightning round. Everybody does this. The worst thing about being Attorney General is . Irrational, stupid, idiotic political opposition. The best thing. Working with the people. Working on the policies. And having your own plane. What youd say to someone who is young and looks at the system and says i dont need to vote. People died so that you would have the ability to vote. Bill barr. A disaster. An abomination. An embarrassment. Merrick garland. A good guy. A good Attorney General. President obama. The man. President biden. A good guy. A good president. History is going to be kind to him. But hes got some really difficult things to do in the next few years. President trump. A real danger to our democracy. A person who cant become president again. Final three. Failure means. Failure means potentially not reaching your objectives but failure also means that you can learn from that experience. Success means. Success means that you have reached an objective that you have set, but it cant give you too much comfort. Reaching the summit means. Getting to a place that you maybe only dreamed of, and having gotten to the summit you have done something positive with the power that the summit has given you. Attorney general Eric Holder. Thanks for joining us. Thanks for having me. When Donald Trump was crossing them reflections from Eric Holder there on this fine holiday. Promises made, promises kept. They pledged to be True Friends of labor because they understand the necessity of unions to the american worker and to the Middle Class. Well, Joe Biden is Kamala Harris kept every single one of those promises. Pension plan relief, the butch lewis act, went above and beyond our expectations. His Infrastructure Bills are bringing good Union Jobs back. Muchneeded infrastructure across our nation, in every corner of our nation. And hes never been afraid to say the Word Union. When he passed the torch to Kamala Harris, he ensured his prounion, Prolabor Legacy would continue with the next administration. Kamala harris understands just as joe did and joe does know, the only way to meet the future of this great nation is by giving workers a real voice at every table. Especially the most important table for every worker and every workers family. The kitchen table. [ applause ] yeah. Brothers and sisters, please join me to welcome our True Friends, the president and Vice President of the united states, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. [ cheers and applause ] [ cheers and applause ] hello hello, hello, hello hello, pittsburgh [ cheers and applause ] [ Crowd Chanting thank You Joe ] thank you. Thank you. Thank you, thank you. Well, ive celebrated many Labor Days in pittsburgh. And its always good to be back with so many great friends. Many of whom flew with me on Air Force one today. Representing yous been with me since the beginning of my career. Theyre not that old. But since i was a 29yearold Kid. I want to thank Liz Schuler at the aflcio. And kenny at the ibew. For their strong endorsement. By The Way, we have an expression in delaware. Ibew when i ran for president theyre the ones that brung me to the dance. Not a joke. And dave mccall, the steel workers. Dave in 1972, steel workers were the First Union to endorse a 29yearold Kid named Joe Biden that wasnt old enough to be senator when he got elected. It mattered. A guy named huey carsello. Was the District President because we used to have one of the largest labor forces in claymont, delaware north. Almost 4,000 workers. Anyway, it all went south. But huey. Huey went to the national president i. W. Aboll. And he said he wanted me to get endorsed. Everybody thought it was crazy. I literally wasnt old enough to be sworn in the day i got elected. But Guess What . President aboll stuck with me. [ applause ] and they got stuck with me for the rest of my career. The ironworkers. Brick layers. April brown with the aciu. Lee saunders. Where are you . [ applause ] Josh Shapiro is Josh Shapiro is doing an incredible job. Governor austin davis. And one of americas best, ed gainey. You are doing a heck of a job. County executive, i think its the hardest job in american politics. Everybody knows where you live and you think you can solve all the problems that you dont have enough money. But i will tell you one thing, im the first president ever, i used to be a County Official when i was 26 years old and it always bothered me that the federal government would send money to the state to be distributed to the county. Allstate reps need the money. Guess what . Under my administration, it goes straight to the county. [ cheers and applause ] one of my best friends, my name is Joe Biden, im from scranton, pennsylvania. [ applause ] the bobby has been a great friend, his dad was a great friend as well. And by The Way, we grew up three blocks from one another. Three blocks. And they still worry about us not showing up. And Guess What, they have renamed North Washington Avenue Down where i live biden way. [ applause ] the bobby, i will make sure you get reelected again, and while we couldnt be here, i want to thank his partner in the senate, john fetterman. [ applause ] if you are in a foxhole, you want fetterman in there with you. He couldnt be here today, but Guess What, you sent the best part of the family, giselle, she is here. [ applause ] the let me just say, its it means so much to be with a true friend, a true friend. The Vice President and the next great president of the united states of america, Kamala Harris point [ applause ] look, folks, i come from two neighborhoods where it is not hard to say the Word Union point but you know what, the fact of the matter is, an awful lot of politicians have trouble. Guess what . I am not one of them, neither is, love, we know the simple truth. Wall street did not build america, the Middle Class built america and unions built at the Middle Class, that is a fact. [ cheers and applause ] by The Way, that is not a slogan, that is a fact. I asked the Treasury Department to do a study and it shows that when unions do well, all workers in america do better, that is a fact. That is a fact. [ applause ] its the biggest reason why our economy is the strongest economy in the world today, without question, because of unions. [ applause ] my dad, like many of his generation, going to World War ii, wasnt able to go to college. My dad was a really well read guy and he was always engaged and he would come home from work before he would go back to close up the shop for dinner, and dinner was a place where we had discussions and incidentally, eight point my dad taught me, my dad would say this all the time, remember, joey, jobs is about a lot more than the paycheck, it is about your dignity, it is about community, it is about your place in the community, and it is about being able to say, honey, its going to be okay, and mean it. That is why [ applause ] thats why kamala and i are so proud, so proud of the greatest Job Creation Record of any president in a single term in american history. [ applause ] 16 Million new jobs so far. [ applause ] 800,000 Manufacturing Jobs. [ applause ] eight years ago, how many times did you hear about we are no longer the manufacturing capital, where is that written . We are the greatest Manufacturing Country in the world. We are going to remain that way. And i will tell you something, kamala and i are proud that we protected the pensions of over 1 Million workers. And retirees. [ applause ] remember all those years of promise we were going to do something about it . We finally did it with the bush lewis act. Over 15,000 workers across pennsylvania. Not only did we start the full amount, we got them there backpay as well. [ applause ] we made them whole again. As i once said to barack, that is a big deal. Yeah, long story. Kenny described another big deal. Union workers have been rebuilding american infrastructure and building new factories here in america. They told me we couldnt get anything done in infrastructure, but 1 Trillion we got done. Remember trump for four years promised every month, infrastructure week. For four years, he promised that. He didnt build anything, nothing. I mean it, not nothing. Thanks to our infrastructure law, pennsylvania so far has received 17 billion, 17 billion. Over 2000 projects, from clean water to affordable housing, for every pennsylvanian. The projects include 858 Million to expand the montgomery bigger barges to get millions of tons of goods faster and more reliable, thousands of Union Jobs. [ applause ] i was working on the Great Lakes and i got a call from senator casey. He has been no bigger champion than casey in this. I called him the casey locks. Not goldilocks, the casey locks. Bobby is also a champion of Pennsylvanias Energy communities. We passed whats called the Casey Credit available to 45 pennsylvania counties were energy jobs such as coal, where Coal Mining have been before and disappeared, before we came to office, the Casey Credit provides major incentives to build new battery factories. Create highpaying jobs from those coal and Natural Gas communities, and on top of that, there are over 4 Billion in private companies that have committed to investing in clean energy here in pennsylvania. 4 Billion. [ applause ] and Guess What . I signed an Executive Order to make sure large federal construction projects, all your Project Labor agreements. [ applause ] the folks at home are maybe watching this and dont know what a Project Labor agreement is, its when subcontractors and unions put in place before the construction begins what the rules are, before it begins. Make sure construction is top notch, ontime, on task, and by The Way, on budget. [ applause ] by american, that has been the law since 1930. I have got to admit i have been around im only 40, but i have been around a long time. But i quite wrinkly, until 10 years ago, wasnt aware, back in the 30s, when they were trying to make sure unions could organize and businesses can interfere, the law was passed that said every penny the president gets from the senate and the House And Congress to spend on a project, you should hire an american worker and use an american product. The past administration, seriously the past administration, including my predecessor, failed to by america. They shipped jobs overseas where america was cheaper. Federal projects to build o american roads, bridges, highways, made with American Products By american workers. [ applause ] its simple and basic, thats why we have so many good paying jobs. Require those kinds of projects to pay davisbacon prevailing wages, so their jobs you can raise a family on. [ applause ] many of those jobs only require a college degree. In fact, we expanded, remember all the hell we got for doing that . Guess what . Resulted in hiring over 1 Million apprentices since we came to office. [ applause ] and lots of folks dont realize, getting an apprenticeship is like getting t another college degree, why . You have to train for four or five years to get that, and some of the best workers in the world are why we are where we are. [ applause ] when you are in pittsburgh, youre standing with steelworkers, lets be clear. I believe in american steel companies. American owned and operated ic steel companies. [ applause ] its not hyperbole, america has the best steelworkers in the world, and i made it clear last time i was in pittsburgh, united states steel, an Iconic DAmerican Company for more than a century, is going to remain an American Company. [ applause ] when i was a young senator, the national labor Relations Board was sometimes so anti labor, it was set up to help labor, to be prolabor. Well, Guess What, thats why one of the most significant things we have done, kamala and i, is appointed the national board that actually believes in unions. [ applause ] its a big deal. Remember, we have short memories and i am all for forgiveness. Trump appointed Union Busters on that board. Its real, it affects peoples lives. We do not let that Son Of A Gun do that again. Folks, we made a lot of progress, and kamala and i are going to build on that progress and she is going to build on it. I will be on buthe sidelines, b i will do everything i can to help you. Im not joking when i say, this is not a joke when i said this in 2020, a lot of people do not believe me, you did, but a lot and believe me, it is all at risk because of Donald Trump, literally. Au do you think this guy gives a about your intentions . I am serious. He isnt losing an instant of sleep over it. You think he cares about the work you do every day and how hard it is . You think he cares about good paying jobs for hardworking people who built this economy . Hell. He regards picket lines, he would rather cross one then walk one. But i am proud to walk on the picket line. Thats [ applause ] we will always walk alongside you. Union workers built this country. That is not hyperbole, that is a fact. These are facts. Not campaign slogans. Let me close with this. Five years ago, i began my campaign for president right here in pittsburgh. I said one of the reasons i was running was to rebuild the Backbone Waand Spine of america the Middle Class, working class folks, not a joke, think about it. Think about it. Five years later, we have done just that. Ju [ applause ] i am back in pittsburgh on Labor Day again with a simple message. As we look at this election, i spent my whole career believing in unions. Im not joking when i say that. Im considered the most Prounion President ever. [ applause ] by The Way, remember all the top, biden got elected, he is going to do a planned economy, we are going to collapse, and there is going to be all this caving in . Interest rates are going to go through the ceiling . Come on, man. G . I am here to tell you, it is about increasing the strength of your unions, what it is all about. If you care about hardworking people, just give them ca fair shot. Everyone in america deserves a fair shot. [ applause ] if you care about the dignity of work, if you care about the dignity of work, and i mean it matters, the dignity of work, The Way you are treated, the decency. I remember when my Great Grandfather was one of the second catholics elected statewide to the State Senate here in pennsylvania and i remember they talked about when they were running against him in 1906, they said Guess What . They said he is a Molly Maguire. You know what a Molly Maguire was . Those of you who dont, Molly Maguire back in the old days, when the catholics came, when they came to the united states of america In The Beginning of the 1840s, late 1840s, they made their way down into pennsylvania, and theres a tear in the coal mines. Those guys who got their last ended up being the last people in the coal mines. But a lot of the english owned the coal mines. And what they did was they had really beat the hell out of the mostly catholic population in the mines. Not a joke, not a joke. But there was a group they called it the Molly Maguires. And the Molly Maguire is, if they would find out taken advantage of an individual, then they would literally kill him. Not a joke. And they would bring his body up and put him on the doorstep of his family. Kind of crude. But ive got to admit, they accused my greatgrandfather of being a molly, he wasnt. But we are so disappointed. That is a joke. That is a joke. Its about the dignity of work. Its about how you treat it. And when i met with the ibw when that started off this last campaign, i said there are two things i am asking of you. One, youve got to open up your unions to more women. [ cheers and applause ] and two, [ inaudible ] we have done both. And Guess What . Now we are 65 that support the american union movement. On [ applause ] it really is all about the dignity of work. And if you care about the dignity of work, there is only one person you have a rational choice with this time and that is Kamala Harris. [ applause ] kamala, kamala, kamala. Let me tell you about this woman. Kamala, kamala. I know her, i trust her, not a joke, i trust her. Number two, the first decision i made to nominate this nominee in 2020 was selecting her as my Vice President. Vi and by The Way, it was the single best decision i have made as president of the United De states of america. Am [ applause ] i was watching something sent to me when they asked barack, he said barack picked ke me as Vice President because he knew i could be president. Ou i know she will be a good president. I know it. [ applause ] i have watched when all the experts of foreign and domestic policy would give us advice and we sat alone in a room and she has a backbone like a lamb rod. [ applause ] she has the moral compass of a saint. This woman knows what she is doing. Folks, i promise you, if you elect Kamala Harris as president , it will be the best L Decision you have ever made. [ applause ] kamala believes as i do that unions are the spine of this economy. She will be a historic Prounion President. So, folks, weve got one more job to do together. Let me ask you, are you ready to fight . Are you ready to win . Are you ready to let Kamala Harris our next president of the united states . [ cheers and applause ] and in the process, are you ready to make Donald Trump a loser again . Yeah i have never been more optimistic about america, we have to remember who we are, we are the united states of america, i mean this with the bottom of my heart, there is nothing beyond our capacity, nothing, when we do it together. And that means alecto my friend, our great Vice President the president of the united states, Kamala Harris. Te [ cheers and applause ] [ music ] good afternoon, pittsburgh. Good afternoon, pittsburgh. Thank you, joe. Thank you, joe. Thank you, joe. Thank you, joe. Thank you, joe. Thank you, joe. Thank you, joe. Thank you, joe. Thank you, joe. [ cheers and applause ] it is good to be in the house of labor. Can we please give it up again for our president Joe Biden. Now, i dont have to tell the Brothers And Sisters of labor that you really get to know somebody when you are in the middle of a fight. When times are hard, when the forces are mighty, when people dont believe something can get done and they have 1000 excuses for why it cant get done. And i have spent more time with this extraordinary human being, when the cameras were not in the room, when the stakes were high, when the heat was intense, and the Joe Biden has always stood with the workers of america and the Labor Unions of america, always always [ applause ] i have been with him when he will bring folks into the oval office, and you know how joe can get sometimes, he doesnt spare words. Sometimes the cameras are not in the room when he has those conversations. Because the thing about the Joe Biden i know, and i know you know, because he has been a friend of labor for so long, for his whole life. Joe biden can be quite impatient. And that is a good thing for that kind of leader. Quite impatient. And i say to all of the friends here, The Press that is in the room, history will show what we hear know. Joe biden has been one of the most transformative President S in the united states that we have ever witnessed. [ applause ] and it comes from his heart. And you know, joe and i talk a lot about the fact that we are so proud to be the most prounion administration in americas history. [ applause ] and as we know, joe has still got a lot of work to do, so lets also understand that. So, i want to thank all the incredible leaders who are here today, including governor shapiro, lieutenant governor davis, senator casey, who we will reelect this november. Mayor gainey. President cooper, all the leaders of labor who are here, all the Union Members who are here. So, i would just get right to a few points. I love Labor Day. I love celebrating Labor Day. And pittsburgh, of course, is a cradle of the american labor movement. It is the birthplace of the afl, headquarters of the steelworkers, home to firefighters global 1, and of course, the historic ibw local. [ applause ] for more than 150 years, the Brothers And Sisters of labor have helped lead the fight for fair pay, better benefits, and safe working conditions. And every person in our nation has benefited from that work. You know, everywhere i go, i tell people, you may not be a Union Member, but you better think unions for that fiveday workweek. Thank unions for sick leave. Thank unions for paid family leave. Thank unions for your vacation time. [ applause ] because when Union Wages go up, everybodys wages go up. When Union Workplaces are safer, all workplaces are safer. When unions are strong, america is strong [ applause ] and we are clear, not only has pittsburgh shaped the history of americas labor movement, today, you are also shaping its future. In 2021, with my dear friend, secretary marty walsh, appointed to be secretary of labor, he and i hosted a meeting right here, it was local, part of the white House Labor Task force that i lead. That day, we met with a group of Computer Programmers who were working to form a union. One month later, they signed their contract and became the first one of the first Technology Unions in our nation. [ applause ] standing on the shoulder of all those who have been here and fought the good fight. So pittsburgh, i remind us of that to say together, we are fighting to build an economy that works for all working people. And that has always been the vision of the labor movement. And that is the vision of our campaign. You know, in this election, there are two very different visions for our nation. One, hours, focused on the future. The other, focused on the past. A bill. We Fight For The Future. We fight for a future of dignity , respect, and opportunity for all people. [ applause ] we fight knowing it is some backward thinking for those folks to have been suggesting for years that the measure of the strength of the leader is based on who you beatdown. You know, that is the stuff they are pushing. That the measure of a strength of a leader is based on who you be down, when we know the true strength of the measure of a leader is based on who you left off. Who you lift up. Do you fight for workers, do you fight for families . Do you fight for those who must be seen and heard and deserve the dignity that comes with Hard Work . Thats what we fight for. And when you know what you stand for, you know what to fight for. So, we are 64 days out from this election. Ballots in pennsylvania will start dropping in 14 days. [ cheers and applause ] 14 days. And this election is as much as anything else, a fight for the promise of america. For the promise of america, we love our country, we love our country. And we know it is one of the highest forms of patriotism to fight for the ideals of our country, and thats what this election is about. And about the promise of america, and i dont need to tell unions what the promise looks like it, it is what you do every day. [ applause ] but as we fight to move forward, Donald Trump is trying to pull us backward, including back to a time before workers had the freedom to organize. Well, the courts will handle that and we will handle november, how about that . [ applause ] we will handle november, that the courts handle that other thing. We are not going back, we are not going back, we are not going back. And one of The Ways we are going to guarantee we dont go back is that we remember, right, it is important to remember what that was and what it is. Remember, as president , Donald Trump blocked overtime benefits for millions of workers. Bill. He opposed efforts to raise the minimum wage. As the President Said, he appointed Union Busters to the national labor Relations Board. And dont forget, you supported socalled right to work laws. And if Donald Trump were to be reelected, he intends to give more Tax Cuts to billionaires and big corporations. Boo. He intends to cut social Security And Medicare. He wants to impose what in effect would be a national Sales Tax. I call it the trump national Sales Tax on every day products and basic necessities that would cost a typical american family, the economists have said this, almost 4000 a year. He intends to repeal the affordable Care Act. And take us back to what we remember, because it wasnt that long ago, was a time when insurance companies could deny people with preexisting conditions, you remember what that was . Children with asthma, Breast Cancer survivors, grandparents with diabetes . Well, look, america has tried those failed policies before, and we are not going back. [ applause ] we are not going back. We are not going back, we are not going back, we are not going back. And instead, and instead we fight for a future where no person has to go broke just because they get sick. And so, building on the work of president Joe Biden and i, the work we have done in the white house, we will continue to strengthen the affordable Care Act and make Prescription Drugs affordable for all americans. [ applause ] we we fight for a future where every worker has the freedom to organize, and we will pass the Proact And EndUnion Busting once and for all, and Bob Casey will help us do that [ cheers and applause ] we see and know and fight for a future where every person has the opportunity, not just to get by, but to get ahead. And so, we will continue to build what i call an opportunity economy, so that every american has an opportunity to buy a home or start a business or Build Intergenerational wealth and have a future that matches their dreams and ambitions and aspirations. Because of course, that is the nature of who we are as americans. We have dreams, we can see what is possible, unburdened by what has been. We have aspirations, we have ambitions, and the system that is a good system is one that supports that and allows people the opportunity to go where they can see and imagine themselves to be. That is what i am talking about when i talk about an opportunity economy, we fight for a future where every senior can retire with dignity. And so, we will continue to defend social Security And Medicare and pensions and pensions and pensions [ applause ] and we will continue to strengthen americas manufacturing sector. And on that point, the president mentioned it, u. S. Steel is a historic American Company, and it is vital for our nation to maintain strong american steel companies, and i couldnt agree more with President Biden, u. S. Steel should remain americanowned and american operated. [ applause ] and i will always have the back of americas steelworkers. And all of americas workers. So, friends, 64 days. Until the most election of our lives. And probably one of the most important in the life of our nation. Truly. And we know this is going to be a tight race to the very end. It is going to be a tight race to the very end. So, lets not pay too much attention to those polls. Because as unions and labor knows best, we know what its like to be the underdog. And we are the underdog in this race. And we have some Hard Work ahead of us. But here is the beauty of us in this room, we like our work. Hard work is good work Hard Work is joyful work and so, in this fight, i will continue to count on the strength, the determination, and the Hard Work of the leaders in this room to knock on doors, to get folks to the polls, and bluntly put, because the people in here do it to help us win pennsylvania. [ applause ] so today, i ask, are you ready to make your voices heard . Do we believe in freedom . Do we believe an opportunity . Do we believe in the promise of america . And are we ready to fight for it . Yeah and when we fight, we win next two god bless you, god bless america. [ cheers and applause ] [ music ] we have been listening to remarks there from Vice PresidentKamala Harris, you can see her embracing President Biden. The two just spoke at this big Labor Day rally in pittsburgh. It is their first joint appearance since the dnc, it is the preview and the beginning of this final nine Week Sprint to the election. Labor day is traditionally the time that we mark the beginning of the election, 64 days until election day. We mentioned earlier in our coverage, the Trumpvance Ticket is not holding events today, that is one unusual contrast. While he has been listening and, along with you and us here, she is of course a former candidate herself for mayor of New York, a civilrights prosecutor, and now head of the Leadership Conference on civil rights. Maya, as you speak, i think we will take this in full as long as we have eyes on both the president and Vice President , we see them governing together a lot, we dont always see them in this campaign setting. Your thoughts on what we just heard . They were on fire, and you could hear it by the response of the crowd. I mean, Joe Biden gave a Master Class in how his administration has been prounion, how he has been prounion. That is clear from the campaign in 2020. You know, trump had actually taken some Union Votes in 2016, and Joe Biden brought unions back, and obviously, [ inaudible ] different politics for each one. I will say Liz Schuler, who was standing up there as the president of the nfl cio, the first Woman President , is a Board Member of ours at the Leadership Conference on civil and human rights, and we were cofounded by union, including united auto workers. So, you know, this was a powerful speech in terms of the record, but i also think what we saw was the incredible sincerity of Support And Emotion between the two. I mean, Joe Biden made very clear that Kamala Harris, as his Vice President , was the best decision he made. He said it out loud, you said it proud, he was holding onto her when he said it. He made it clear that he wanted his Union Voters to go to her, that she was in lockstep with his administration on all the advancements they made for union. And then she gets up, and not only demonstrates that same sincerity of Relationship And Love and emotion that they have for one another, very different from Donald Trump and jade events, and stark contrast in and of itself, but she also starts, The Way she so often does, with making sure she is lifting his presidency up, his leadership, reminding folks who he is and how wonderful he has been to her, but then she goes in to prosecuting the case against Donald Trump as an antiunion candidate. And you heard the crowd behind her, one person even yelled out in the crowd, that it was criminal. But i think it was a powerful litany of the kinds of things we have seen in project 2025, corated by members of trumps former administration, and she was just pulling it forward, naming it, going down the list, and making very clear that she was going to be the aspirational leader that was going to Fight For The Future and not allow anyone to go back to the past. And that was something that you heard folks in the audience loving, shouting about. You could feel the energy, just watching it on television, knowing that some of those union organizers, knowing unions, and knowing how listen, they wont hold back if they are not happy. So, it was a great afternoon, in pittsburgh. Yeah. All great points, political and otherwise, from Maya Wiley. I will tell viewers, we have eyes here still on the president and Vice President. We saw someone to escort the elusive double selfie, which is big in democratic circles, a selfie of both President Biden and the Vice President. You can also see a lot of the secret Service And Security as security is on Everyones Mind this Campaign Season, but that is a Camera Shot we have after we listened to both speeches on this big Labor Day event, and our thanks to Maya Wiley listening along, giving us her first reaction. We are going to fit in a break here after 40 minutes of news from the campaign trail, but when we come back, i have Something Special for you. Bob ward would or on the selection and what he has learned that might disqualify Donald Trump from ever posting office again, by The End of the hour, as mentioned, phoebe bridgers talking womens rights and rock n roll. One choice is whether you want this man, the former president , back in office. The great trauma of the covid pandemic. Now we turn back to policy, which matters this general election season, and veteran Journalist Bob Woodward about his many interviews and his journalistic adversarial coverage of how trump handled that pandemic. We have spoken about this, now we are sharing it with the viewers. What do you think this all shows . It shows a negligence to a national Security Problem for the country, a national health problem, and it turns out, in the reporting, and this is on tape, the front national Security Advisor Robert obrien and his Deputy Matt Pottinger went to trump in early january, that is the last that is the year that trump is running for reelection, and obrien tells trump, the coming virus will be the biggest threat be the biggest national Security Threat to your presidency. Now, i have covered 16 national security advisers, going back to henry kissinger, and never heard that stark, dramatic warning that obrien gave his Deputy Matt Pottinger, an expert on china, had been there for seven years as a Wall Street journal reporter, told the president , i have contacts in the medical underground that tell me in china that this is going to come in a way that there will be 650,000 deaths, a wakeup call. Trump listened, and then spent months and months saying, oh no, it is going to go away. So, six months later, this is the moment you captured here where he says, oh, we have got it under control. And you can hear this in his own voice, and i say under control . 140,000 people have died in this country since the virus, and since it came. That is six months of no action. Was a clear from your access to him and those conversations at the time that he had absorbed some of these warnings, that he did know it was going to be that bad . Well, it took me months to learn about the warnings from his national security advisors, and when i learned about it, i was dumbfounded, and we were in the middle of the crisis, and he still was not acting. This idea of we have it under control, it was never under control. It intentionally was never under control. And the problem with trump is, i think he looks at democracy as enemy territory, to be quite frank, because that is the people, and he always wants it to be about him. And you have listened to eight hours, and it is all about, oh, no, no, no, everything is fine, i know what i am doing, and when you lay it all out, he did not know what he was doing and didnt care. And bob, that goes to one of the points we have explored, in comparing your tapes to what was done at the time, there were people who were factual at the time, even though there was more to learn. What does it tell you that for him, he viewed this often as a Propaganda Or Pr challenge . Get people to either Blame Someone else or not think it is that bad, rather than what you have described, which was a test of leading the nation, the work . We can hear it in his own words when we go over that time, when 140,000 people were killed and he said, oh, it is under control. I said, whats the plan . He said, oh, well, in 106 days, you will learn the plan. That is election day. He is focused on the election. And what is the plan now . He said, well, if i put it out, people would not remember it. You dont need to remember a plan, you need to act on it. So then we have i want to play this for you, bob, because we have so much tape. Really unusual exchange, and it is your attempt to, yes, question him, but also, i think everyone understands he is difficult to deal with in many ways. So, youre almost pushing your way in to say no, here are the things, and youre talking through with him. So, im going to play this, it is tapes, then we have a cameo by your wife, pretty interesting , i will let the tape do the talking, lets discuss on the other side. Take a listen. Give me that list of those things. What i will do is send them to jared. Arrayed them out. Go ahead. It read them. Okay, the first is testing. It has got to be a manhattan project. Number two, the medical Supply Chain has to be made as perfect as it can be. Experts say you may have to federalize that. Number five, shelter in place. That there needs to be a national order. I know you dont want to wear a mask, the experts are saying, i hear the briefings, sir. Six is the food supply. You were really shouting at him. I was sprayed to get in a word edgewise. You were shouting really loud. Its okay. You want to get more information from him. Like this, i agree. Telling him what he needs to do. Yeah, well you dont want to do that. Okay, but we are in a different world now, sweetie. I think that has got to be fascinating to some people, tell us about that. Well, she is right, i was shouting at him, because i had information from the doctors on this, saying he needed to mobilize, he needed to define things like what is what is a national obligation . Lets coordinate internationally. I had a list of 12 things, and he listens to them, and then after, he tweets the next day, oh, there is light at The End of the tunnel. You are known for covering President S. Have you ever addressed any president like that . No, i have not. So, the question to you is is your wife partially right . No, shes completely right, and i said it is a different time. When i have information that i had from people who were doctors, people who were not partisan, people who want to address this national crisis, i am going and i have access to the president of the united states, im going to say, this is what i am learning, what are you doing . And the answer is and this is the tragedy, this is the sickness for the country, that he says, oh, there is a light at The End of the tunnel, it is going to go away. And anyone who knows anything about this knows it is not going away, and matt pottingers estimate of 150 im sorry, 650,000 People Dying , now its twice that. 1. 1 Million died. And so, we have this moment where the president can see the numbers and he is in kind of political and personal denial, and i once asked him, i said what is the job of the president . And he said to protect the people. I have never seen such a failure to protect the people. A bob woodward, thank you for doing this. Thank you. Food for thought from bob woodward. And the Brat Summer maybe ending, but the campaign is just beginning, and we turn to womens rights and how the culture and a lot of the energy out there could really up and what happens in november with Rock Star Phoebe bridgers. Switch Today Selfconscious of having a Fan Base that it can feel like when i talk im preaching to the choir. So its nice to know that a message is getting to somebody that disagrees with me, i guess. Do you think younger people out there are in touch with how endangered these rights are and the legal footing for roe v. Wade . Yeah, i think people are terrified. We have a dollar of each ticket going to the mariposa fund, an Abortion Fund based in santa fe. Theres like all kinds of things we can do, but it just i hate that the responsibility is has been thrown on these grassroots organizations instead of the government. Like i think i have just been raised my whole life thinking everything is moving up. And like, it can only get better. Do you think also younger People Today are perhaps understandably surprised that this might be this is a right thats taken away. Rarely does the Supreme Court retract human rights. Totally. I mean, i think as a 27yearold, thats how it feels to me. But i definitely talk to like 20yearold people who are like, what do you mean . Its been a Trash Fire since i was watching the news with my parents. Bummer. Huge bummer. Trash fire. Its a reminder how events do define generations and cohorts. Just like vietnam and civil rights shaped our past generations, bridgers has connected with some young people who see, as she put it, this nation not only in design, but with younger fans, younger than her, who say this is all they know. This political Trash Fire. Whatever the premise, bridgers has been connecting with this generation, composing much of her current album before the pandemic yet with a style that also has met the moment. And drawn on some of her idols that so many music fans love like david bowie, which we also discussed, while some music writers have dubbed her the voice of the pandemic. Take a listen. It is very interesting to put out music when nobody can leave their house. It was very interesting to not leave my house. You have songs although they may have been written during the pandemic, that are about being alone or ending up feeling lonely or being at home. Totally, yeah. I mean, i the last tour i got home from before covid, i like didnt leave my house at all for ten days. And it was scary. And i dont know. Like, i can scare myself sometimes when my job is being in front of people, and then when im left to my own devices, i can really, really isolate in a dark way. So it did kind of shine a light on that. David Bowie Talks about being scared or unsafe artistically as a place that you know youre going to do good work. We were thinking of you with that. Lets Take A Look at that. If you feel safe in the area youre working in, youre not working in the right area. Always go a little further into the water than you feel youre capable of being in, go a little out of your depth. When you dont feel your feet are touching the bottom, youre in the right place to do something exciting. I love that. Is there an example of that you can think of in your work . My first album, my producers and i, tony and ethan, we really butted heads like the entire time. I wanted to make a folk album, and tony was like, speed it up, speed tup, speed it up. We need a rock song. And i was like, i dont know. Im selling out. Like, i hate this. And it was so fun, the final product is my favorite thing to play live. Im so glad that i was pushed in that direction. So then the second record, it was just like, were experimenting. Everything is scary. Everything is different, everything is the opposite of how i wrote it. And im so grateful for that. So im like a lot used more used to being scared now. Bridgers talking to us here for our new Mavericks Series and theres a Rock Tradition that i bet you know about that dates back over 50 years which she engaged in. Bridgers smashing her guitar last year while performing on snl. Were showing you hendrix doing it there. Its a standard move in rock, but its suddenly drew all kinds of criticism when a Woman Rocker did it. Theres one more question we have to ask. Its obviously very serious. And that is if men who play music can smash guitars for decades, can women or is that not okay for women . Thats my favorite thing ever. No, i think women should stay away from it. Because theyre women. Yeah, i dont know. Our little arms cant, like, really get in there. We didnt want to go in depth on it, but i will share with you since you shared so much, i went to jimi hendrixs high school, and they had a bust of him, and hes a big inspirational force in many ways. And he was pretty rough with the guitars. Next time im definitely going tolight it on fire. A lot of my favorite lyrics have started as a joke. Like i cant actually say this and then i do. Its almost like tweeting but really sad. Sad tweeting . Yeah, i think i would be a music journalist. Journalism is dying, i dont know if you heard. Who cares . Youre not only doing true. Youre doing true and rare. Im trying to look back at some of my earlier music with like radical acceptance. Like capitalism brain, like you just have to monetize it so all the pain was worth something. If something is hard enough, people will then remember it more fondly . Like it was all worth it, totally wasnt. No . No. Now, you can see the entire thing at msnbc. Com mavericks. Msnbc. Com mavericks or msnbc. Com ari to see all of our latest segments.
