Welcome back, everyone. Im Alex Witt from new york. Mourning and angry. Thousands taking to the streets in israel demanding a Cease Fire Deal and gathering at the funeral for one of the six hostages killed by hamas in gaza. What President Biden just said about a potential Cease Fire Deal and prime Minister Netanyahus efforts to bring the hostages home. Plus, the President Today set to reprise his role as campaigner in chief, but this time for Vice President CamKamala Harris in pennsylvania. And a Labor Day Strike for thousands of Hotel Workers across the country. Why they say theyre walking off the job on one of the biggest travel days of the summer. But were going to start with growing pressure on prime Minister Netanyahu to cut a deal and bring the remaining 101 hostages being held by hamas Back Home. Crowds of demonstrators lining the streets in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem Today venting their anger at the prime minister as well as his government. In the u. S. , President Biden was asked if netanyahu had done enough to reach a cease fire. His response was a blunt no. And we learned in the past hour that the United Kingdom now says it will suspend some Weapons Sales to israel out of concern they could be used to violate international humanitarian law. All of this as israel mourns the deaths of six hostages killed just before they could be rescued, including Israeli American who was laid to rest today. His mother fighting back tears telling her son, quote, finally youre free. Its not that he was perfect, but he was the perfect son for me and i am so grateful to god and i want to do, thank god right now in front of all of you, for giving me this magnificent present of my hersh. For 23 years, i was privileged to have the most stunning honor to be his mama. Ill take it and say thank you. I just wish it had been for longer. Hersh like most parents, dada and i would talk about what you would become, what you would be like when you grew up. What you would do, what you would look like, what kind of parent you would be. But now, you will forever be our beautiful boy. You will stay the kind, irreverent, pensive, forever handsome, forever young, forever my sweet boy. Matt, incredibly emotional to listen to that. Both of his parents say they hoped his death along with the five others hoped it would lead to a deal. How do you think things have changed over the past 24 to 48 hours . Its a great question and one thats hard to answer. When were talking about what weve seen over the past 24 to 48 hours, theres a huge amount more of it. This isnt the first time weve seen Hostage Bodies who have been recovered from the Gaza Strip. Its not the first time weve seen mass protests against netanyahu. This is not the first time weve seen a lot of anger against the government so it is really all that weve been seeing before for the past almost a year but actually just so much more pressure. And yet at the same time, weve just heard in the past 24, 48 hours as you asked, netanyahu has said hes not going to be yielding. This is from israeli media. On some of the chief concerns that have been roadblocks in the way of coming to a deal that would free the rest of those prisoners so in many ways, were seeing more of the same at an accelerated rate and you know, this is still on the backs of these tried, tested, and failed efforts by the White House, the u. S. Administration, to try to push the parties to come to a deal. So, again, were seeing this in a much more accelerates, much more accentuated way. Not sure if this is going to breakthrough and create some kind of change on the ground in israel or the Gaza Strip where theyre in desperate need of some sort of accommodation. This is a situation that is still very much arrested by the political forces that are just beating back and forth here in israel. Yeah. To the point of having a shouting match, i believe it was, on saturday within the cabinet there that was quite widely reported. Monica, has the message from the White House changed at all in light of the deaths of these six hostages . Sadly, alex, we have seen the President And VicePresident Share these messages before when there has been news of the killing of some of these hostages in terms of being outraged. In terms of being so saddened, but perhaps in this moment where this is an administration has built a relationship with these families of american hostages and that has been in really frequent teach with the goldbergpolin. This is something theyre talking to frequently. The national Security Adviser has met with many, many times. They feel it deeply anytime theres horrendous news like this. With the Family Theyve come to know well who have been effective advocates on behalf of their son and the other hostages, i think there is this sense theres a renewed urgency, but weve been here before. This is language from the White House that is similar to what has been said but where the president is really stressing and urging people he says to realize that israeli prime Minister Netanyahu in his words is not doing enough to secure a deal but we know that the president and the Vice President wrapped up a meeting in the Situation Room this morning with the national Security Team and with some of the key players who have been most involved in the negotiations to date. And those are people like the cia director, bill burns. Secretary of state blinken, who has been shuttling to the region repeatedly over these last eight or nine months. And then you have the white House Chief of staff and the national Security Adviser talking about potential ways forward. The conversation now shifts to what could be a next Deal Or Offer that is put on the table but how different would it look from what has been already put out there. That is the main question. It has been these gaps that have been so illusive. So a major question now obviously the urgency is clear and present from the administration but how they get that done and some of the people i just mentioned there on the screen are people who have generally been going to the region to try to help and secure some of this. So is it possible we see more travel from the administration in the coming days and weeks to get this kind of agreement . Those are the discussions. Thats some of the active conversation going on here. Benjamin netanyahu, he seems to think he can still win this war. First of all, how does he define winning and is that even realistic about this point . Yeah, another great question. When youre talking about how to define winning. Actually it really depends on how you define it. Right after october 7th, netanyahu and the military, they were very, very clear on what theyre objectives were. There were three. Securing israels borders, freeing the hostages, and Defeating Hamas once and for all. Now, its been nearly a year. None of those three have been achieved and in fact when you look at securing israel and its borders, now israel is fighting in three different theatres of war. Its enclosed in by war in the west bank. Northern israel and lebanon against hezbollah and in the Gaza Strip. A war that is still at full froth. Hamas is still a Fighting Force in many ways in ways that belie what weve been hearing from the israelis that theyre in defeat of this Terrorist Group and the hostages as weve seen are still being detained. None of this has been achieved and Thats Part of the anger were seeing on the streets even for those who are more right winged among israelis here. A lot of these goals, especially the two big ones, which are Defeating Hamas and freeing the hostages are increasing and have been for the past here, being seen as at odds. One cant be achieved without the other. Thats why were hearing this also in the halls of power. From idf generals. From top politicians. Theyre saying choose one. You cannot have both. Defeating hamas and freeing the hostages and thats why there needs to be a deal. We need to seal the deal right now. Thats something that a lot of israelis are hoping the White House starting to hear. A lot of this stuff, not just because were americans and were walking around there, there were a lot of people saying Joe Biden and Kamala Harris say we need to prevail among Joe Biden and his lieutenants to force them to come to a deal. They know the resonance of american diplomacy and what it means for israeli leadership. We know netanyahu has a News Conference at 1 15 p. M. Eastern. I know youll be covering that for us. Thank you so much to you both. In 90 seconds, democrats descend on to pennsylvania where the stakes could not be higher. The big players campaigning there today for harris and walz. So were going to be following her as she makes her way through detroit and does some campaigning on this Labor Day as she meets with labor leaders. Its part of the campaigns Labor Day blitz seeking to shore up support in these key state. That includes pennsylvania where all hands are on deck. In just a matter of hours, President Biden will hit the Campaign Trail with the Vice President for the first time in fact since he left the race. Theyll be meeting with local unions in pittsburgh as they look to tap into the states rich history of organized labor. It will mark her ninth visit to the crucial Battleground State this year. Weve got a lot of people to talk art this starting with Mike Memoli from pittsburgh. Also, julia, political reporter for the philadelphia enquirer. Julian castro, 2020 democratic president ial candidate and an msnbc political analyst. And brendan buck, former aide to house speakers John Boehner and Paul Ryan as well as msnbc political analyst. Lets get the conversation going. Were going to keep the camera, everybody, on the Vice President as she makes her way eventually to the caravan that will take her there. Mike, pittsburgh that is a Labor Day tradition of sorts for Joe Biden. How could that translate to the Harris Campaign . Reporter when you think about the different constituencies, the Harris Campaign needs to keep energized and to turn out in november. Organized labor is one of the most critical of that group and when you talk about the types of voters that President Biden still a has a special connection in the eyes of his advisers, they think that is one of them. It was six years ago in fact that i was in in very same Union Hall in fact here in pittsburgh when then former Vice President , Joe Biden, came to pittsburgh, marched in that Labor Day parade. It was something of a Test Launch of his potential 2020 candidacy. At the time, biden told me these are the guys that brung me to the dance. Today, he is coming with a new Dance Partner for organized labor. Its notable this is the first place were seeing President Biden and Harris Campaign together since the president ended his candidacy. It speaks to the important part, political Home Base for him. This is also where he ended his 2020 campaign. Also held the first rally of his 2020 campaign in pittsburgh. We know the way the Trump Campaign has tried to make inroads. Biden won by 16 points four years ago but we saw the republican national committee, one of the major Labor Leaers in the country on stage in a Prime Time spot. This is a window into how biden might be useful to the Harris Campaign in the closing nine weeks of the campaign. You look at where were going to see biden this week as hes now reemerging for the first time since his emotional address at the convention. Hes here today, later this week. Hell also be doing events in michigan and wisconsin. Courting those types of voters. The Vice President is in michigan now. Governor walz, the Vice President ial candidate, starting his day in Minnesota And Hell attend events in wisconsin as well. Funny you should say that, my friend, because to the left of the screen, we see Vice President nominee, tim walz, the governor. He is there in st. Paul. I promise hes in there. Hes got a lot of people around. Hes been taking selfies as a lot of people have been known to do and giving a generous amount of his time. Julian, how do you think the campaign can best use President Biden on the trail . Whats the best role he can play . There are a couple of things here. As mike pointed out. Biden has a great connection. Especially with working Class Vote ers. Also older, moderate voters, continued to do well with even up through the time he decided to exit the race. So he helped to bolster confidence among those voters for Vice President harris. In addition to that, we know Joe Biden, even though his political home, his residence was in delaware and he represent it for all those years, his narrative home is pennsylvania. He was a kid from scranton who could connect with that state. Pennsylvania is a make or break state or the closest we have to it with 19 electoral votes. It gets harder for Vice President harris or former President Trump to win without pennsylvania. So this is a smart move to roll out this joint appearance on Labor Day, which traditionally is the start of a Fall Campaign where more and more voters begin to tune in. I think well continue to see President Biden show up at events like this in other Battleground States like michigan, like wisconsin, that have a similar profile to pennsylvania. Brendan, like all voting blocks, union members arent a monolith. An article out today says as Union Leaders throw their support behind democrats, Donald Trump maintains the loyalty of many of their members. So how should the Harris Campaign approach courting some of those Rank And File members . Yeah, its a different set of politics than we used to have back when i was on the Romney Campaign in 2012. Donald trump and his allies have tried to remake the republican party going after the Working Class white voters. That is his base. Whether union or not. The Polling Weve seen in recent weeks, while Kamala Harris has come in and been a bolt of lightning, shes made up a lot of ground with younger voters. Voters of color. Demographic groups they really need. She hasnt quite caught up with white voters. Thats why i think youre seeing a lot of energy and enthusiasm. Shes done better than Joe Biden was doing but they need to up their numbers there and focus. Joe biden, a good surrogate for that purpose, probably the only one he sees good for at this point even in pennsylvania. When he dropped out. He was losing pretty bad in the polls there. Point being, this is a very important demographic because Donald Trump is playing for those really, really hard. Not just in this campaign, but hes been doing it for years. Trying to remake the republican party. The party of white working Class Voters and populism and i think the way this shakes out is going to be telling not just for this election, but for the long haul of our politics. And again, governor tim walz, we see him there and hes making his way. Trying to get on the road. Lets put it that way. But the fact is hes very generous with his time and hes greeting everybody on the tarmac. Tim walz is going to follow up this event with a solo trip across the Keystone State later this week. His first Solo Visit to pennsylvania since joining the ticket so what appeal does he have to pennsylvanians . I think the Harris Campaign really sees him as someone who can do a lot of what weve been talking about but President Biden might be able to do for her along the Campaign Trail. Going to some of those white Working Class areas. Going to more rural communities where we know the Harris Campaign has opened a lot of Campaign Offices in recent days in pennsylvania or recent weeks. So i think the hope is that he can appeal there and to some of those more moderate, independent voters who at least may stylistically connect with his roots. His rural nebraska upbringing. We know about that 3 of pennsylvania voters are undecided according to polls, which is a smaller number than in august 2020. But you know, a lot of those voters do identify as independents, as moderates. So i think the goal there will be hoping his background can kind of appeal in some of those areas where peoples politics might be more moderate. And julian, harris and biden are also going to be joined today by governor shapiro, who was among the finalist to be harris running mate. How much weight will his Support Add to the efforts across the state . Well, its a great endorsement to have. I mean, hes a popular governor there in pennsylvania. He has shown when he ran, an ability to cross over and get a lot of moderate support. Even some folks who had been republicans and so having his vote of confidence out there, vouching for the ticket is great. Its fantastic. Especially, you know, its no secret, obviously he was in the running to become the Vice President ial nominee. That hes going out there and still campaigning hard for the ticket. I think speaks well not just of him, but also of Vice President harris and governor walz. So thats going to be helpful. And then i would also say that you know, one of things we can tell here on the screen is look at how many of the office holders were there. You can tell the enthusiasm for a candidate by how many people show up on a tarmac to greet them and want to be part of the press and media and all the attention thats with them. That is a perfect encapsulation of where we are for Vice President harris for democrats in this race. They want to be a part of a winning campaign that has momentum. They need to take that into pennsylvania and keep going for the next two months into victory. Weve heard the Harris Walz Campaign say they are reaching out to every single voter. In fact, we are seeing evidence of that. Tim walz is making sure that he leaves nobody without a handshake or a greeting there. Let me get back to the 3 , julia, you reported on. The pennsylvania voters who are undecided. You spoke with some of them. Those that fall into this group. What did you learn about what theyre actually watching for in this race . What is going to influence most their vote . Well, undecided voters are a tricky group to capture. A lot of them arent even paying that much attention yet which i know is hard to believe. But some of the ones i did talk to genuinely do feel a little frustrated with both parties at this point. I talked to a voter who was a twotime Trump Voter who just didnt know if she could do it again. She was very frustrated with recent visit to arlington national cemetery, but she also watched the Vice President s Cnn Interview and said she didnt feel like she was getting real substantial answers there. So i think with a lot of these voters, it may just be what happens in the debate, the final weeks, but finally pushes them in One Direction or another. Or in some cases, whether to vote or not to vote. Theres a school of thought that harris is saving some of her Fire Power and details for the debate in that huge platform. Mike, julie, julian, brendan bunk, buck, good grief. I talk to you ever week. Thanks, guys. Coming up, more than 10,000 Hotel Workers walk off the job. Reporter well, there are about 10,000 workers, housekeepers, cooks, all kinds of staffers who serve you when you go on vacation and stay at a hyatt, hilton, or marriott. The Lieutenant Governor and governor just arrived here to address the workers and show them some support. What they tell us is that some of them have been working at this chain for ten, 20, even 30 years and theyve seen very meager raises. Things like 25 cent, 30 cent raises. Meanwhile, their rent has in some cases doubled, theyre struggling to afford their healthcare bills. Theyre making decisions about paying their Phone Bill or to get meat for them and their kids. Weve reached out to the hotel changes and hilton responded telling us they are committed to good faith negotiations and to find a way to make this work for their staff and hotels. Okay. Pria is in atlanta for us. Welcome to you. Lets see. Things dont look too bad behind you there. How are they . Hey, alex. Theyre not too bad right now. But of course, this is the worlds busiest airport and every single holiday, this past year, weve just been smashing records when it comes to the number of tsa screenings occurring nationwide. This were pretty long lines in the Security Check points today. Tsa was projecting they were going to screen 70 Million people over this extended period from thursday up to this wednesday which is an 8. 5 increase compared to last year. Aaa also projecting a 9 increase in people traveling to domestic destinations. That is translating to longer lines and waits at the airport. I spoke to some people who have been traveling today. Lets take a listen to what they had to say. Yesterday, they delayed our plane so much in Green Bay that by the time i got to chicago, even though i ran as fast as i could through the airport, i missed the plane. Just make sure you have everything. Be ready. Be prepared for something to go wrong. And alex, some of the good news here is part of the reason that more people are traveling right now is that the price for domestic Air Fare is actually down 2 . And its the same thing for the roads. Were seeing lot of people hitting the roads trying to return home from their Labor DayWeekend Travel plans and so its expected to be the most crowded on the roads between 11 00 a. M. And 8 00 a. M. Today. So if you can, try to leave after that or if youre planning on leaving tomorrow, its better to leave after 1 00 p. M. But again, the Silver Lining is the average gas price, 3. 33 per gallon, which is down 50 cents compared this time last year. Good point. Thank you so much. Lots to watch. In ukraine, explosions have been ringing out. Ukraine says todays strikes have damaged five kindergartens in kyiv just as kids are returning to class for the start of the school year. Ukraine also says russia used hypersonic missiles to attack kharkiv yesterday. Just 25 miles from the russian border. It killed one and injured 57 others. It also destroyed civilian infrastructure including a supermarket, a Shopping Center and the kharkiv Sports Complex. This is where Oksana Grew Up Skating who posted on instagram, quote, I Cant believe its gone. Erin, i said i was thinking about the timing of this attack. Damaging kindergartens . I mean, it seems particularly cruel right now. That and destroying the Sports Complex with such a proud history to it. Talk about the latest thats happening there. Reporter hey, alex. Well, yet again, we woke up this morning to the sounds of explosions in kyiv. About five explosions i heard in rapid succession waking me up. The sounds of Ukraines Air Defense system intercepting russian missiles and when that happens, what you tend to do here is grab your phone and check an app to try and figure out whats going on. They have Telegram Channels that let people know where the ballistic missiles are going. In this case, i checked one channel that told me two more missiles were headed toward kyiv. In that case, what ukrainians do is either wait and see what happens or they head to the shelter. This is the reality. On a pretty much daily basis, for millions of ukrainians and in this case, as you mentioned, alex, this was the first day of school. So millions of ukrainian children woke up at 5 00 a. M. Already nervous about the coming school day, to the sounds of ballistic missiles being intercepted by Ukraines Air Defense. In total according to the ukrainian foreign minister, 35 missiles and 25 drones were launched toward ukraine from russia. Some of those missiles provided by north korea. He once again pleading with the west to give ukraine The Green Light to strike back, to use the weapons provided by the west to launch attacks on russian territory, tweeting the regimes in Pyongyang And Moscow have no restrictions on long range strikes against any place in ukraine, however, in defending itself against these two barbaric war machines, ukraine is force to fight with hands tied behind its back. Isnt this absurd. Now, it is worth noting that ukraine launched attacks of its own on russian infrastructure. About 158 drones according to reports were launched over night on russian infrastructure in russia. Alex . Extraordinary details youre sharing with us. Thank you so much. So we want to show you now some live pictures from Tel Aviv and it shows crowds again filling the streets now that night has fallen. As people around the country prepare to go back to school, one county in georgia scarred by racism has established a new scholarship meant to help the descendants of black families compelled more than A Hundred years ago. Correspondent markese has this story. Thank you for having me. Sure. So this scholarship is a undertake of a group of local pastors that wanted to acknowledge what happened in 1912 who were expelled and told never to come back, including the public lynching of thee black men and this time when people are looking to atone for their own past misdeeds, the founders said this is something different. This is an act of love where recipients could get up to 10,000 for up to four years of undergraduate studies but this report does contain some graphic footage that deals with racism. Take a listen. White only, no blacks. Do you not know the history. Black people are not welcome here. [ Crowd Chanting ] Forsythe County, georgia, situated 30 miles north of Atlanta And Home to about 270,000 people bills itself as a growing diverse community. But beneath this life, a deep and complex history rooted in racial violence and injustice. And today residents are having a serious reckoning with that past. The bigger vision i have is for the county that was called the most racist in america in 1987, dream is it for be called as the county of love. Reporter in 1910 Forsythe County had just over 1100 african american residents, a mix of Land And Business owners. By 1920, however, there were virtually zero as most of the black population was expelled from the county in 1912 following the killing of a white woman and the lynching of Rob Edwards and the hanging of two black teens earnest Knox And Oscar daniel. There was little evidence that black people had anything to do with crows murder, save for one coerced confession, but for many residents that didnt matter. Black residents were forced out and told never to come back. The county rear mains virtually all white until the 1980s. In recognition of these historical injustices, a scholarship was established in 2022 for descendants of the expelled black families. Each received 10,000 a year for up to four years for undergraduate students. This junior at university of georgia. What did you know About Forsythe before knowing about the scholarship. My mother told me stories about my great, great grandfather but i didnt know much at all. My mom would always tell her, her grand said dont go to forsythe for anything. So that was all i knew About Forsythe. Reporter the Scholarship Committee was able to connect the dots between tidbits from the family history. A lot of the families have buried the stories. And partly it was just so hurtful and so painful for them. Reporter former pastor Der Wood sneed starts the scholarship with a group of local pastors. A group said thank you for Opening Pandoras Box in our family. To finally start talking about this and what happened. Reporter today one in three residents are people of color, Freedom Fantly Asian American and Hispanic American but the county has never been past 5 black. Joshs family was forced out in 1912. But just two years ago in 2022, the barber opened up a shop here. So the fact that you ended up moving here, how did that happen . I had to ultimately make a decision. Am i going to operate in fear, or am go i going to trust the word of the people that say this is different. Hi enough courage to say, let me check it out. And let me go and see. And it is been wonderful. Would highly recommend for other people to come back.
