Edition of Morning Joe. We hope you are enjoying your Labor Day weekend. Were on tape this morning bringing you some of our best discussion from the past two months, and we start today with our conversation the morning after Kamala Harris accepted her Partys Nomination for president on the Last Night of the dnc in chicago. Willie, you obviously are in chicago. Describe the scene if you will, because it is awfully hard you know, debates, ive heard one journalist after another say never try to judge how a debate turned out, president ial debate, when you are in the room. It is quite the opposite at a convention. You could walk into a convention, you can be watching it from you know, you had the Bob Uker seats which are usually the best seats to stand in, take it all in and say, okay, what is the state of this party. What is your answer to that . Youre right. John and i sat in section 315 Last Night eating those blackhawks and bulls nachos. Yummy. A pretzel with no salt. We really had the full experience up there. Thats where we were sitting, right up there. Youre right, joe. You could really drink it in and watch the entire scene play out. We have all been to political events where the enthusiasm feels a little manufactured, where people have to be told when to cheer and what to do. Yes. This is not that. It very well might have been if Joe Biden had not stepped out of the race. Theres a lot of talk about the Parallel Universe where Joe Biden stays in and what this might have felt like. But when you looked at that room Last Night, joy was the Word Weve been hearing all week. It was there as reverend Al Sharpton made clear in his speech, shouting about joy. Also, john, you Cant Mistake again Last Night, and i would say more than any night, the level of patriotism in the room, which is you look down from where we were sitting and just a sea of american flags being waved. Signs, chants at every turn about the united states military, Members Of Congress who have served in the military all coming out on stage, and a unifying message from Vice President harris Last Night, which was not a Base Play but a play to the groups of people she knows she needs to win this election, swing states, and, frankly, even to republicans. She is saying, the door is open. If you are disillusioned by what you watched from Donald Trump, if you are disillusioned by the last ten years, and we folD Covid into that as well, if you are tired of the past, come with us because were not going back, as she put it. She explicitly said she was appealing to americans whose vote she knows she didnt have yet. Speaker after speaker all week long focused on the battleground states, it was a roll call, arizona, north carolina, pennsylvania and the like. I think the Vice PresidentLast Night checked every box her team wanted her to do. First with the biography, Leaning Into not just explaining herself to america who doesnt know her all that well yet, but linking her community to those who raised her, to the immigrant experience, to the experience of family, the experience of that love as she put it. She did indeed move to the middle on certain things, played up a lot on national security. In some ways she came across almost hawkish. She had to threads the needle on israel and gaza, a challenging moment for the administration. We should note, we shouldnt lose sight of perhaps the major Story Line coming into this convention was whether the protests were going to overwhelm them, whether it would be chicago 1968 again. It very much was not. There were protests, there were, especially that first night, but they were not nearly as large as they were anticipated to be and they certainly didnt get as violent, willie. So that, democrats breathed a sigh of relief. Last night we had the Vice President , you know, with the momentum of a strong convention behind her, you know, hit the ball out of the Park Yesterday and now heads into the next big centerpiece of this campaign, the debate in about two weeks. Joe, as we talk about this idea of patriotism and the greatness of america, i was struck, as im sure you were, Last Night at the Democratic National Convention how many times the Name Ronald Reagan was invoked, talking about the shining city on the hill. All of these themes that weve become accustomed to seeing at republican national conventions were here at a Democratic National Convention in 2024. It is a stark change from what republicans always attacked as the San Francisco democrats in 1984. It is a complete reversal. You have actually Walter Mondale never said he loved america, he never said the things about america that Donald Trump is saying now. It is actually far worse where the republicans have taken their party, saying we are a nation of losers, we are a nation we are a stupid nation, we are a nation in decline. I could go On And on, but the chants of usa throughout the week, im telling you that sends chills up and down the spines of republicans. They know the shoe is on the other foot now. The symbol of the flag taken from them. You look Last Night at all of the flag waving throughout the entire evening. It is pretty incredible again because you have republicans that are constantly trashing this country, and most americans love their country even if they know, you know, were always striving to be a more perfect union. Chris matthews, why does this matter . I remember you saying something a long time ago. I hope you remember saying it. Maybe you only said it one time, but it stuck with me as i was driving through working neighborhoods. You know, you grew up in a working Class Neighborhood in philly, and you said, you know what the Working Guy has, you know what the little guy has . Hes got the flag, thats what hes got, and he puts it out in front of his house because thats what hes got. It represents the country he loves, and it represents everything that hes striving to be. As i saw those flags Last Night i was thinking, yeah, that is such a powerful message to people who used to think they automatically had to vote republican. Yeah. Well, youre right, i did say that. It was a guy that told me its all ive got is the flag, it is my country where i served in the military. You know, Last Night and this whole week has been unbelievable for the democrats. The usa, the anthem, you could hear it underpinning every speech Last Night including kamala. You kept hearing that anthem of i love this country. Everything, speech writers, people dont talk about the speech writers, they put those speeches together. God, Michelles Speech was unbelievable. It was. It was unbelievable, but it wasnt just the drama, the way she presented it, it was the words she used. The language about it being a black job that trump is going for, thats what hes running against an american woman of color, hes running against her for a black job. It was a riot she could nail that so well. But the balloons came down. I have been to a half century of conventions, i have to tell you, back to 72, and i have to tell you the balloons coming down and that cascade. It wasnt just a few balloons, they kept coming down everywhere, giant balloons, kids were playing with them. It was really well produced, tuesday and Last Night, the speech requires got together with the candidates and politicians and worked it out so it was their speeches. I kept thinking, kamala has learned a lot over the years in politics. One thing she learned was talk about your parents and grandparents, bring it home to people. When you say Grandpa Finnegan, how many times did biden talk about his Grandpa Finnegan and what his father said when he said, joey, or his mother said joey. His homegrown feeling, she got it Last Night. She talked about her indian mother and how she taught her all of these things, these basic bromides about life. She didnt quote a philosopher, she quoted her mother who came over here i 59. I may not agree with the Hard Left on this, if they do get into the White House and it looks like they can do it, they can do it, be like this when you are in office. Dont switch to the old Hard Left. Do this even if it is tougher to get some republican votes. Be like this. Be like Last Night. The verse Last Night, it wasnt just sort of trumps Carnage Speech or the basic Medal Of Honor Winners and the horrible stuff. It was the look of the audience Last Night. It was more diverse than the Church Youll go to or synagogue, it was everybody there, the music, everything was black music, all kind of stuff, all kind of culture in the air. They were saluting that too. They werent just saying americA In theory, they loved the room they were in Last Night. Right, and and i thought it was powerful to look at that room. They have to bring that room into americA In the next couple of months. They have to act middleoftheroad general democrats. Thats what she is seen, a general, run of The Myth regular democrat. Not a lefty, a Hard Left, a prosecutor prosecuting a bad guy, but a regular democrat. Thats a good feeling. Black or white, regular democrats are not feared. It is the Hard Left we have to fear. Data point on that. It is so good. Before Joe Biden dropped out of the race there was a poll that was Joe Biden against generic republican and generic republican won by six points. Then it was Donald Trump versus generic democrat. The democrat won by seven points. Thats again, shes doing a lot to, again, try to stay more in the middle, like you are saying, chris. Which actually, ironically, if you look at her career thats where she is. 2020 was a stretch when the Democratic Party in the primary had gone far left and she was trying to fit into the box and people were like, why did she look so awkward at times then, but not now, it is because she was trying to follow where the party was. This actually is a more comfortable fit. You know, we had talked to Elizabeth Warren earlier talking about how progressives throughout the biden administration have been patient. Theyve been pragmatic. They havent done what right wingers and trumps party has done, which is to make americans go, whats wrong with those people. It reminds me of, like, the Logan Roy Line in succession which was the line of the season. Oh. Probably the best Television Line of the year. Just not serious people. Youre not serious people. When you look at the republicans and what theyre doing, you sit there and you go look at Donald Trumps tweets. Youre not serious people. You look at the democrats Last Night. A ton of progressives in that hall, a ton of progressives saying, were in it to win it. Thats a serious party. Yeah. Thats a party that has their eyes on the prize, and theyre not going to let ideology get in the way. Still ahead on Morning Joe, Fred Trump iii, formerpresident trumps nephew, joins us on why he believes in policies over politics, which is why hes supporting Kamala Harris this november. We talked to him about that and his new book. Thats next on Morning Joe. Why do couples choose a Sleep NumberSmart Bed . I need help with her snoring. Sleep number does that. Thank you. Although most of the Trump Family usually puts out a united family behind Donald Trump, another member of the family is publicly breaking ranks. Fred trump iii has now come out in support of Kamala Harris. The endorsement comes as Fred Trump releases a new memoire which has the title All In The Family the trumps and how we got this way. In the book fred takes readers behind the scenes of the Family Dynamic he says helpeD Create the former president , and fred joins us now here onset. Good to see you. Thank you. Congratulations on the book. Thank you. Lets start simply with this. Why not . Why speak out now . There are two reasons, and we havent started now. My wife lisa and i have been advocating for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Our young son has complex disabilities. We have been doing so through the legislative and executive branch. We have met during Donalds Term with Cabinet Secretaries in a meeting that culminated in May Of 2020 in the Oval Office. So we havent just started. We waited for the book, we wanted to wait for william to become settled in a new home environment. He doesnt live with us now. He lives in a group home. We wanted him to be settled, but weve been thinking about this for a while. Tell us more about what Donald Trump has said about your son. Donald has never met william. In fact, No One in the trump two of my cousins have met william. So when he said what he did to me, when a fund that had been set up for williams health, for his therapeutic needs and i just want to clear something up. The reason a fund existed is because donald orchestrated a plan to take my sister and me out of my grandfathers inheritance, which went back days after william was released after seven weeks in hospital. Al, you will remember that. You have to remember donald was my trustee. He was supposed to protect me and my family. He did the exact opposite. So the fund was my money but i had to ask for it back, which was troubling. So when the fund was running low i called donald and i mentioned that, and he said, your son doesnt recognize you, let him die and move to florida. Now, i dont know how you can explain that away, the cruelty of that comment. But as you will read in All In The Family he had said something very similar in our last Oval Office meeting with a group of advocates. He haD Called me back into the office when those disbursed. He said those people, all of those expenses, they should just die. So it is hard to wrap your head around that. We should note Donald Trump disputes this account. He says in a statement, i helped him so much, more than anyone else in his life and this is the thanks that i get. Eric trump took to twitter, x Last Night, after decades of unwavering love, golf memberships, et cetera, et cetera, and you have decided to cash in now. Respond to what they were saying. The dynamic started when i was very young when i was able to grasp, and understand that i am one of the only people that knew donald in his formative years, through his Business Career and during his presidency and after. So i know donald as well as anybody. My father, his older brother freddie, wanted nothing to do with the Family Business, but my grandfather who was very tough wanted him to. My father wanted to be an Airline Pilot and wound up being an Airline Pilot in the early 60s. That was quite a feat. But donald, who was given The Path by my father to do what he wanted to do to run the Family Business just demeaned my father for no reason other than his need to feel superior to other people. And that led to issues with my dad unfortunately. People will say this is like the succession television show. I say no, it really isnt. In succession there were three siblings that wanted to take over the fathers business. My dad wanted no part of it. My dad wanted to be an Airline Pilot and became that. Again, he gave donald The Path, but donalD Crushed him. Fred, i want to go back to what you were saying about your sOn AndDonald Trumps reaction, because one of the things that strikes me as you know, i have known Donald Trump for a while, pro anD Con relationship, is that the insensitivity that i might have marched on him about in terms of Central Park Five or something else is one thing. But to be insensitive to his own nephews condition, and it shows how he feels about people that have situations like what you and your wife are dealing with with your son. Right. That he really has no sensitivity toward people that are suffering or find themselves in a different situation, which is scary if you are going to make him President Of The United States. Yeah. Talk about just his lack of humanity and sensitivity. Well, i was listening to the segment before with Senator Kelly and the Immigration Policy and how donald and the new republicans, the republican party, which is not the republican party i remember, just everybody is a rapist, everybody is a criminal. The way i answer that question is, the caregivers that Take Care of my son william are from many of those same countries. They care for him every single day of his life. So donald does not respect people that he deems lesser than him. You know, fred, it also is interesting that he doesnt want to be in the presence of people with disabilities. You know, i remember the comments that he made to General Kelly right. Who was then his chief of staff. He said, nobody wants to see those people. Eric and donnie, we invited them to our house many years ago and they came. They saw william is wheelchair bound, needs assistance, everything. He is a wonderful young man. And im sure he has enriched your life. He is the most courageous and inspirational person i have ever met. Then you look at the evangelical community, and this circles back to you, rev. Im pretty sure that jesus spent a lot of time talking about taking care of the least among us. Right. Can you reconcile in your mind this enthusiasm among evangelical christians for a man who has advocated killing people, letting them die if theyre disabled because he doesnt like the way they look . I think they have the same End Goal in mind, just power and to push their goals. If you dont mind me going back again to Senator Kelly, and i hope this helps answer one of your questions. During the inauguration in 2017, my two older children were with us and sitting right behind me was Senator Mccain. And when the ceremony was over, i brought my kids over and i said, this is a word i dont use very often kids, Senator Mccain is an american hero. Obviously, this is after donald had said he wasnt a hero, which i think baffles many minds. And the fact that it doesnt disturb a lot of people that he said that goes to your point. It is very, very sad. Not only during the 2016 campaign did Donald Trump mock john mccain, but he also mocked a New York Times reporter who had a disability, made fun of him on the stage and drew laughs anD Cheers from his crowd. This was a report that he didnt want wounded veterans on the stage with him because he didnt think it was a good look for his political campaign. You have been to the White House several times, you voted for Hillary Clinton for several times but you did stay on good terms with your uncle and visited the White House several times. The book is titled All In The Family. Do you see it as a sad breakdown of Family Relations or is it something more than that to you . The family broke down early in my life when, again, my father was going through his issues. He was then deemed pretty much the loser. My father was supposed to be the golden boy, he really was. My father was an incredibly caring anD Charismatic guy, but circumstances led to his drinking and, in turn, my sister and i have been deemed the seconD Class citizens of the family. When donald or the others will say the Trump Family, it doesnt include us. I just dont get that. So, yeah, All In The Family is well, it is an ode to one of my favorite television shows. Al, you remember. But were from queens so, you know, were tough and im thrilled with someone called my nuclear family, my three kids and my wife, lisa. All right. The new book indeed titled All In The Family the trumps and how we got this way, it is on sale now. Author Fred Trump. Thank you for joining us this morning. Up next, we talked to threetime emmy awardwinning actor Tony Hale about his new netflix show. You wont want to miss this. Morning joe will be right back. Thats a look at the new show on netflix entitled the de cameron. The limited series is inspired by the 14th Century Collection of Short Stories by the same family. In it a group of Wealthy Nobles decide to take refuge from the Bubonic Plague in the italian countryside, coping with the circumstances by engaging in drunken fighting, and petty drama. Joining us now, a former costar and former costar of veep, stoney hale. We are going to talk about this incredible series you costar in. I have to ask you about your Acting Rapport with julia louisdreyfus. Oh, yeah. We were showing a clip. You guys are amazing together. Oh, thats so nice. I had a hard time keeping it together on The Show. She told me once, she told me, tony, you know youre not watching The Show, youre in The Show. It is so good. My daughters and i still watching it right now on repeat. Oh, it was so fun. Over and over again. So tell us about the decameron. It looks really fun in a sick way. Yeah. Kathleen jordan created The Show and wrote it during the it is inspired by the decameron. She wrote it during the pandemic as a way to process the Fear And Uncertainty we were going through and she made this dark comedy about how these people were dealing with the High Stakes. As you mentioned it was these Wealthy Nobles who went to this villa to try to escape. If you think of downton abbey. Would it be like many people who went to the hamptons . I am sure they thought they were escaping but im sure there was chaos there. Actually it is similar to veep and you are dealing with High Stakes and how everybody reacts and behind the scenes they go crazy. Some people handle it well, some people dont. It is funny because my mom was a writer, is a writer, and she was during the pandemic she said, this is just like d decameron. She said, this is the modern version. Wow. It is pretty amazing to see this. Im curious, you are a comic genius. Thats so nice. We were talking about Arrested Development. It comes from so much pain, so much pain. I love arrested. How depressed are you, will . How do you relate to these characters . Im pretty depressed, but lets just say i had a lot of therapy. We were talking recently about like you look at the other show i did, Arrested Development, you look at veep. Theres a Codependence Theme throughout them. Theres buster, giving him a massage. Theres the theme, it is cool how you can go through life and use it in the future for somewhat good and art and i do anxiety really well. It is a forte of mine, shall we say. Im sure you have seen that veep has skyrocketed the last few days because of items in the news. Whats going on . People can relate. Lets focus on the new show here. Tony, lets look at a character where your character has to calm down one of the guests staying at the villa where he works. Are we thinking a Midnight Tour to the village . The piazzA Is quite to bold but you cant see much in the dark. Done. Excuse me . Done with this tiny room for a pitiful unmarried male. We are going to leonardo. He said he was in a Neighboring Town getting wine. What town . Were going there. I said he was a town over. What town . Was it prada . You dont know. If you sense a secret marriage with a woman, i will kill you and i will kill you in your sleep. FionA I swear he is unmarried and knows nothing of your looks, though that would sure be a check in the i shoulD Carry Home Column because, my god, you are beautiful. Lets talk about the cast. The wig, talk about the wig. Actually, yes. You looked wonderful. Thank you, thank you. In addition to being extraordinarily handsome in that scene. Thank you. Talk about the cast and how much fun it was obvious you guys were having. We were in rome for about six months, which was such a gift. Ill say. But you also are hoping that you get along with your cast, and we all just had such a great time, and being around the italians, the italians are very honest people. I i said this on fallon the other night. I had a Wardrobe Designer and im Wear Abc Belt and i said, can you make this belt tighter . He said, no, you have an odd shape. I said, im sorry . He said, well, you do, it is odd. Wow. Man, i kind of have an odd shape. Tony, this looks so good. I love it already. I cant wait to see it. Oh, thanks. I have to say we need to get Arrested Development back into the rotation of what were watching in my family. Thats an amazing show as well. It did not get its due. It did not get its due. Yeah, we were kind of always on the bubble, but also it was kind of it was a dense comedy. Yes. When it started people werent used to spending the time thinking about it, but there were jokes that were so smart. Like tobias joined the blue Men Group thinking it was a Support Group for depressed men. It was unusual, but so good. So good. You have such range and yet theres a little bit of you in the characters. It is on netflix. Emmy award winning actor Tony Hale. Thank you for having me. We love having you on Morning Joe. Take care. Coming up, we will Take A Look back at the womens liberation movement. Our next guest spoke to some of the women at the center of it including politicians, lawyers and athletes. I am not the candidate of Black America, although i am black and proud. I am not the candidate of the Womens Movement of this country, although i am a woman and i am equally proud of that. My presence before you now symbolizes a new erA In american political history. 52 years ago congresswoman Shirley Chisholm made history. Fast forward to today where Vice PresidentKamala Harris accepted her Partys Nomination to be the first black female candidate for president. We recently spoke with Awardwinning Journalist and former Washington Correspondent for News Week about her new book titled The Movement how womens liberation transformed america, 19631973. Clara, the book is full of amazing interviews, i read many but i want to focus on Shirley Chisholm because so many of us assumed Kamala Harris is the first. We dont necessarily know the story of Shirley Chisholm. What was it like for her as she faced the Misogyny And Racism that much more explicit 50 years ago . It is hard to describe what Shirley Chisholm when she walked into the halls of congress in january of 1965. She was the first black woman of congress. There were 11 women in congress and 10 black Members Of Congress out of 535, and she was faced down with the most extremely insulting and outrageous racism from mostly southern white men from from the Georgia Delegation and the South Carolina delegation. One man would spit in his handkerchief every time she passed him. The Georgia Delegation refused to sit down with her when she sat for lunch at their table by mistake. Someone else would wipe down her seat at the Committee Room every time she left a committee hearing. It was unbelievable. And she was so brave and proud and never let it get to her. She was just a remarkable change agent, and No One wanted her to run for president either. The national womens political caucus which she helped found didnt endorse her, for did the Black Congressional Caucus endorse her. She just ran for president because she felt that there was a need for americans to be inspired by someone who wasnt an old, white, provietnam war man. Clara, as you know, i was part of Shirley Chisholm president ial campaign, i was 17, going on 18 years old, and the pain she went through, the insults, the kind of just totally just casting her to the side by Members Of Congress was painful. But i think also the fact that many black politicians were misogynist toward her, talk about how even people in their own silos have to deal with people in there that can say, im all for racial equality, but dont talk to me about Womens Movement or lgbtq movements. Shirley chisholm broke down all of those doors. I look at Kamala Harris today. It is almost unbelievable the kind of doors she broke down that we take for granted now. It is so true. She paved the way for Kamala Harris. She is the if we had to have one person who is the foremother of Kamala Harriss president ial campaign, it is certainly Shirley Chisholm. It is important to remember that in the late 60s and early 70s, the black Power Movement was such an important part of the new civil rights movement. It was very macho maleoriented movement. Shirley chisholm wrote many times she found of the two deficits in her life, being black and being a woman, she found being a woman much harder to be able to progress and achieve. That was partly because many black men in the leadership were insulted she would think as a woman she should be the first black person to put herself force as a president ial candidate. She also was incredibly inclusive about lesbians and gays. Yes. People in the community at a time when it was absolutely taboo, and she was pro choice as it was called then. She was for reproductive freedom and one of the founders of naral, which many people in the black community were antiabortiOn And felt that a lot of women needed to be involved in Nation Building and having a lot of children. So she just fought against every single stereotype. Clara, i love the book because it kind of makes you feel like you are sitting with these women. Oral histories are so powerful, you give us the privilege of being in the room with us. Tell us about a couple of other interviews, maybe bobby Gibb Or BillieJean King as they reflect back on that time, how much do they think things have changed and how much hasnt . There are so many of my favorites, but one of my favorites is bobbie gibb who was the first woman to run the marathon in 1966. Now i feel like here we are with the olympics. It is important to remember what it was like for women in the 60s. Women really didnt participate in sports and it was considered unlady like and even dangerous. It wasnt legal for women to run in the marathon until 1974, but in 1966 Bobbi Gibb who was a young College Student and loved to run, lived in boston, had witnessed the boston marathon, which at the time was the only one in the country, if not the world, just jumped in from a bush at the beginning of the race wearing a hoodie and her brothers shoes and shorts and ran the entire marathon. By the time she got to wellesley, the word was out that a woman was in the race and all of the wellesley girls who traditionally held a bridge with their arms cheered her and started singing, and bobbi at this moment realized what she was doing to just show that women could physically run the marathon would have a huge impact on womens rights, and she was so right. Yeah. If somebody says no, by the way, just jump in straight from the bush and get it done. The new book is titled The Movement how womens liberation transformed america, 19631973. It is a great read. It is on sale now. Award winning journalist clara bingham. Still ahead, our conversation with the worlds fastest man, olympic Gold MedalistNoah Lyles. D medalist Noah Lyles. Ask about vraylar and learn how abbvie could help you save. The Paris Olympics were filled, of course, with dramatic moments. None more so than the Photo Finish in the Mens 100meter final. It was in that race american Noah Lyles in lane seven mounted a comefrombehind victory, winning by. 005 of a second. He would add a bronze medal, despite being sick with covid in the days leading up to and in that race. The worlds fastest man, Noah Lyles joins us live in the studio. Oh, my god. The champ is here. Noah, it is great to see you. Well can we start with the 100meter final . Sure. And that race. I mean we have all seen that photo and you sticking your chest out just enough to win the gold medal. For the layman watching, uhoh, he is falling behind a little, doesnt look good, was that your strategy all along . Take us through the race a little bit. No, i wouldnt say thats my strategy but i would say it is very normal of my races. A lot of people know me for being a finisher. I have extremely high top speed. My start can be closer to average than most people, especially in a race where it is considering the fastest man in the world. So everybody else in the world, i feel they definitely went out of their normal plan and tried to use everything in the beginning where i kind of had a normal start for me and said, hey, in the top End Portion of the race towards the end i will give It Everything i have. I know the rules, i know it is torso first, and im pretty good at my lean and my dip. Yeah. As you can see, it awarded me the gold medal. Yeah. So if i remember correctly, right after the race you didnt know whether you had won. No. In fact, maybe you were congratulating somebody else. Yeah, i was talking to the man who got second from jamaica, i was like, i think you might have got that one, man. You know, we didnt know because it was so close and i was so far out that i couldnt see. You know, all i knew was that i had to lean, and after the race i was like, dang, did i get first . Did i get second . Did i get a medal . I dont know, it felt so weird. I couldnt see or sense anybody. Then my named popped up on the screen. I was like, oh, my goodness, im amazing. Yes, you are. Yes, you are. Speaking of, my daughter called me during The Show. I come from a family of runners, running is life to us. She said, why didnt you tell me Noah Lyles was going to be on . I said, what should i ask him. I said, should i tell him hes great. I think he kind of knows that. Im curious, when did you start running . Do you still love it and when did you know you were great . I started running around the age of 9, 10, and i was actually a high jumper. I wasnt into the Sprinting Portion but i have been in the Track And Field world my whole life. Both my parents are runners. My dad ran at seton, and he has his own career. It is the type of environment i was in from an early age. When i eventually decide to do track i was like, oh, im kind of fast. Then i got to about my 8th Grade Year and im like, oh, im really fast. Oh, wow. Thats when Me And My Brothers saw the olympics in 2012, and we were like, we can do that, we going to 2016. Four years later i missed it by one spot, but i ended up breaking the High School national record and so On And so forth, turned pro with adidas and everything else is history. Wow. I would love to hear about the 200 that you ran under those conditions, but you have this largerthanlife personality. Thank you. You are a showman. Yeah, yeah. And as a result, some folks have come at you. Tyreek hill wants to run against you, but talk about you and the personality you bring to Track And Field. My girlfriend describes it very well. I have different hats that i wear, and being a performer is definitely one for the track. But people can get lost in that personality because, unfortunately, thats all they get to see in the 9 to 19 seconds i get to show them. Usually it is moments like this where we get to actually have a Conversation And Everybody learns, oh, my gosh, he had so many hardships and i had to overcome things constantly like Catching Covid at the olympics. Come on. And still saying we got to find the right circumstances and make sure everybody stays safe, not just myself, because we didnt want anybody to miss their opportunity to be able to have a Great Olympics as well. So, yes, i wear the hat of being a showman and i have a lot of confidence because i have been through a lot to say that, hey, i have been through this moment, i can fight through it again. Those are the type of things that some people just dont get to see. So any time that they see me online, it is a situation of, oh, he is cocky and bashful, whatever, but as soon as they meet me, youre right. They get to see the personality. Oh, this is not the guy we see on the track all the time. This is a guy who has been through life and understand it is quite a bit more than just he thinks everybody else is beneath him. Yeah, talk about another side that people dont see. You know, they turn on the olympics say, oh, my god, must be incredible to be born with that talent, to be that gifted, for everything to fall into your lap. Talk about the hard work, talk about the challenge, talk about the discipline, when everybody else is sleeping and you are getting up and going out to the track and it is sacrifice, sacrifice, sacrifice. Pain. All for that moment. Yeah, i think that a lot of people probably can get a concept of it, but it is different when you are living it. To be honest, it doesnt feel like a sacrifice a lot because this is what i dreamed of. This is what i prayed for, this is what i worked toward, this is what i want. Right. Everybody has their dream and their motives and for me thats this, Track And Field. Im having fun with it. Of course, sometimes it is very hard. Sometimes you can become the olympic champiOn And you get a call from gunna and he says he want to meet you . And i say, oh, im so sorry, i have to go run. All of a sudden you hear, yeah, were going to go i remember i had tickets to see Travis Scott in orlando and i was going to go and i was like, oh, it is too late and i have a Track Meet in two days, it is probably going to make me too tired. Thats the life of a runner. And then i hear from my friend, oh, man, he showed up. Oh, my favorite artist. But you have to repeat the mantra of, im going to be an olympic champion, im going to be an olympic champion. You have the sacrifices of food, diet, mental health, always trying to keep your team in line and putting your best foot forward as you go and sometimes you dont get it right. Thats the best part of Being Human and thats how we are. It is all worth it. Part of Being Human. Yeah. And he is the worlds fastest man. Thats kind of cool. We continue now with this special Holiday Edition of Morning Joe. Were on tape this Labor Day, which marks the unofficial final sprint to Election Day in november. Just days before Kamala Harris picked Tim Walz as her running mate, joe spoke with the Minnesota Governor about the newfound excitement for harris being at the top of the democratic ticket. If it is any indication my 17 and 23yearold kids said tiktok is on fire. Theyre back engaged. You can feel it. The donors are back. Look, minnesotA Is always closer than people think. Look, since 72 we made the right pick. We made the right pick with monday. We are going to stick with making sure that president harris will come through minnesota. We will deliver our ten electoral votes. Governor, i wanted to ask you, i think minnesotA Is such an interesting sort of analogy for the country, right . You have the big cities. You have rural parts of the state, and you have been steadily moving to this blue democratic trifecta. What have you learned in bringing together the rural and the urban voters in your state that you think the Harris Campaign can use to really engage some parts of america that have turned quite red, particularly the rural parts of the country . What should they take from the Minnesota Story . Yeah, the midwest is the key. Look, i represented joe was talking about Steve King. My district bordered Steve King and on the other side was michelle bachman. What i know is people like j. D. Vance know nothing about small town america. My town had 400 people, 24 kids in my graduating class, four were cousins. He gets it all wrong. It is not about hate. The Golden Rule is mind your own business. Their policies destroyed america, they divided us, theyre in our exam rooms. I think what Kamala Harris knows is strong schools, Health Care, things that are important. They went right to division. Donald trump talked about infrastructure. Joe biden and Kamala Harris built bridges, built roads. I think it is going back to the bread and butter, getting away from this division. We do not like what has happened where we cant even go to Thanksgiving Dinner with our uncle because you end up in some weird fight that is unnecessary. And i think bringing back people together well, it is true. It is. These guys are just weird. It is. Theyre running for hemanwomenhaters club, thats what theyre going at. Thats not what people are interested in. Robber barons like Jd Vance and Donald Trump gutted the midwest. They talk about Private Schools. Where in the heck are you going to find a Private School in a town of 400 . Theyre public schools. Those are great teachers making a difference and gave us an opportunity to succeed. That angst Jd Vance talks about in hillbilly Elegy None of my cousins went to yale or went on to be venture capitalists. It is not really who people are. I think that message doesnt resonate. You saw it yesterday. The energy exploded. We all broke fundraising records but thats not what im looking at. Door knocks are full. Phone banks are full. People are talking about what is possible. We are on offense about america where were all together. Go down to florida and the Vice President will stand in a planned Parenthood Clinic. She stands at a planned Parenthood Clinic in st. A new book is shedding light on how Donald Trumps time hosting the Reality Tv show The Apprentice cemented his image as a successful businessman and ultimately helpeD Catapult him into the White House. In apprentice in wonderland, how they took him through the looking glass. The tricks he used starring in the Reality Show to get american hooked on his message. He also shares Behindthescenes Information about how he was humiliated by his 2 take,000 per episode. He hatched a plan to become one of the richest, ask for 6 million, equal to the combined salary of the cast of friends at the time. The author joins us now. Ramin, it is great to have you on this morning. You talk about this sort of alice in wonderland, through the looking Glass Thing that was threated by trump and burnett. I still remember businesspeople in manhattan just dying laughing at the prospect of Donald Trump being this great businessman when they all had stories about, you know, his bankruptcies or his failure to pay bills or you name it, his bad judgment as a business person, and yet tv made this reality true for millions of americans and Donald Trump has dined off of it since. This is the story, this is the reason why Donald Trump became President Of The United States. This is the reason why he is now the nominee anD Can become President Of The United States again. I think the important thing about this book, what i want everyone to know is that it is based on a lot of access to Donald Trump. I interviewed him starting in 2021. I as a journalist spent more time with him than any other journalist since he left the White House on the record. We talked a total of six times. We were sitting together in the Board Room at Trump Tower watching clips of The Apprentice. It is also a story about the president in exile. His mental temperament in the months after he left the White House, his desire for revenge, his fixated on famous people. Joe, he is still fixated on you. He talked in specific detail about an interview that you did in 2015 where Lawrence Odonnell was questioning how much money he made off of The Apprentice. Most President S postpresidency are thinking of moving on, but he was still thinking on every negative thing that was said. This book is also a warning because he knows how to use the media. People keep saying the Trump Era is over, but he wont leave because he is a reality star. It is hard to move on from reality stars, they know how to captivate their audience. By the way, really quickly, it is a reminder we dont do this so much anymore for a guy that never watches our show, hi, donald. Next question, laura . Like you, joe, i grew up in New York actually. My memory is similar to joes memory of this show, which is kind of, you know, looking at they show and thinking, is this guy for real . I mean i knew as a kid even i knew about the bankruptcies, i knew about the Central Park Five case, i knew that he was desperate to be an insider in new York Society but really was never an insider. Can you talk a little bit about actually what it is about The Show that you think really resonated with so many americans outside New York and led us to this point . What was it about The Apprentice and this idea that he had that seemed to make him relatable . So The Apprentice premiered in 2004. At the time i moved to New York i was a reporter at Newsweek Newsweek and i starteD Covering The Show and i had a lot of access to Donald Trump going back 20 years. There was survivor, Fear Factor and a lot of Reality Shows but aimed at the lowest common denominator. The apprentice was going to teach you about business. People in their 20s, 30s at the time thought it was aspirational. They could go on The Show, show how smart they were and Donald Trump was the voice of judgment, he decided who was good, who was bad, he went in the Board Room and hired someone. They could work for his company and made 250,000. It was seen as smart Reality Tv. Donald trump because of the editing he got, because of the way in which Mark Burnett who created The Show portrayed him on The Apprentice, people started to think he was smart, funny, a good Family Man and good at business. That image made him President Of The United States. Those are the voters, the millions of voters who watched The Apprentice for the 14 seasons he hosted The Show, that became his base. You can look at The Apprentice, you can look at the art of the deal. As far as the branding goes, it is extraordinary for where he ended up going. I remember after The Apprentice came out, i remember a couple of things. First of all, my son then at the time who was 12 or something like that, you know, starts walking around the house going, youre fired, youre fired. This is breaking through, Number One. Definitely breaking through. Number two, i remember driving around lower manhattan, cab driver, and i always right. I always interview people that are driving me around. Hey, how you doing, where you from, when did you get to america, whatever. I remember one guy saying to me, he said, you know, im driving a cab now, ive been doing this for six months. Im going to save enough money, im going to buy a car, then im going to get two, then i will have four and one day i will be like trump. This was probably 2005, 2006. I thought, you know what . Talk about a brand resonating. Yeah, for sure. This really is. Ramin, i wonder if you have taken a look at you know, there are so many episodes, and i have always you know, you hear rumblings about outtakes and what the fate of those are. I guess theyre not legally getable and seeable, but apparently theres a lot to learn about Donald Trump, not only in the episodes but in the outtakes. Well, he was micced the entire time and he loved being in the Board Room. It was his favorite part of The Show. He didnt understand why he talked to me about how he didnt understand there had to be all of this extra stuff with the contestants. Not surprisingly he wanted the camera on himself. Even though they were on tv only ten minutes, they would go on three or four hours and he was micced during all of that. I asked him about the alleged tape that existed where he allegedly said the n word, and he denied it, burnett denied it and said there was no bunker where that tape exists. But the other thing that was interesting because i got to know Donald Trump post presidency. Over the weekend he was talking about how Joe Biden needs to take a cognitive test, Joe Biden isnt all there. Donald trump had severe memory issues. As the journalist who spent the most time with him, i have to say he couldnt remember things. He couldnt even remember me. We spent an hour together in 2021 in may and a few months later i went back to Trump Tower to talk to him about his time in the White House, and he i said you know, he had this vacant look on his face. I said, do you remember me . He said, no, he had no recollection of the lengthy interview that we had, and he wasnt doing a lot of interviews at that time. I think the american public needs to see this portrait of Donald Trump because it shows what he is like, who he is and who he has always been. Ramin, im curious why you think he talked to you so much. It seems obviously he loves the identity of being a tv star, thats selfevident, but why you, why did he talk so much and why do you think his people were so willing to let you do it . He was very excited to talk to me. He actually reached out to me when the book was announced. As the editorinchief of variety he has a lot of affection of variety. He has the variety ratings of The Apprentice, on The Wall, and he was excited about that. He is very aware of that as Somebody Savvy about his image. When i showed him the Opening Theme Song from The Show, he lit up and was happy. When he watched himself firing omarosa, he lit up. He was very happy. We visited key scenes on The Show in Trump Tower and it was the happiest he was. Then he would talk about being president and he would become very gloomy and upset and resentful, and then he would have his list of enemies. All right. Wow. Im curious. I saw a headline on top of you while you were saying something. It said that Donald Trump that The Apprentice was Donald Trumps proudest achievement. Would you put that on par with him being elected President Of The United States, the success in breaking through during The Apprentice, do you think thats what he is still the proudest of . Absolutely. No question. Thats from the washington post, they have an excerpt from the book today. He would go back and forth about whether or not he would be president without The Apprentice. A lot of people around him said he wouldnt have been president. He told me he didnt know if he would have run for president if it wasnt for The Apprentice, thats how important it was. I also talked to Eric Trump who said it taught the family how to be public, how to be in the media, it taught their father how to react in the debates. You know, next week he will be debating Joe Biden. He will be using the tactics he learned in the Board Room when he would be arounD Celebrities and other contestants and undermine them and be silly,ry lick ridiculous, and it worked for him. The new book is entitled apprentice in wonderland how Donald Trump and Mark Burnett took america through the looking glass. It goes on sale tomorrow. Ramin setodch, congratulations on the book and thank you for coming on The Show. Thank you for having me. We appreciate it. Jimmy, john and jane, three texas Supreme Court justices. They told a mother of two she couldnt get the Health Care she needed, the Health Care that could save her ability to have children in the future. Yeah, jimmy, john and jane denied the Health Care her doctor saiD Could save her life. Because jimmy, john and jane didnt think she was close enough to losing her life and fertility. Thats a new ad by find out pac, a group working to unseat three texas Supreme Court justices who voted to up hold the states strict ban on abortion Health Care. This morning one texas father is partnering with the pac ahead of fathers day, calling on all dads to join the fight for womens reproductive rights, saying the stakes are too high to stay silent. He would know. Ryan hamilton, a Texas Radio Host, recently went public about the nightmare, the ordeal he and his wife faced after doctors told them last month that the baby she was carrying had no fetal heartbeat. At the same time she was more than three months into the pregnancy with their seconD Child. Ryan says his wife was denied proper medical care and nearly died due to the current abortion Health Care ban in texas. That ban restricts all Abortion Procedures after six weeks of pregnancy before most women even know theyre pregnant. Ryan described how his wife was sent home from the hospital three times and the horror of finding her bloody and unconscious on the bathroom floor. His wife ultimately miscarried. Ryan joins us now along with the founder of find out pac, Gina Ortiz jones. She is also former undersecretary of the u. S. Air force and an iraq war veteran. So we welcome you back to The Show, gina. Thank you. Ryan, im so sorry about what your family has been through and i understand it continues with negative Reaction Youve gotten from the public after sharing your gutwrenching and horrifying story. Whats happening . Yeah, the last thing we ever expected was to go through what weve been through, for my wife to lose the baby and then face blowback on the internet. It is just not something you take into consideration. We were just trying to share with the people that keep us with us and our life together and never expected it to go as big as it has gone. It is an insane level of hate and just kind of ignorance from these people that saying theyre conservative christians, but in our experience so far there has been nothing conservative or christian about the way that theyre acting. It is really, really terrible. You know, what makes it more terrible, if thats possible, is the case of what your wife went through, what your family has endured is exactly the example of why abortion is Health Care. Agreed. That you need these procedures to save a womans life, especially when a fetus has no heartbeat. You dont let her bleed out in her house, sterilize her and hope that she survives when you have the ability medically to save her life with abortion Health Care. Abortion Health Care. Abortion is Health Care, and they dont want to admit it. They hide behind religion. Let me tell you, that religion does not stand up for what theyre saying. Thats a whole other segment. But i have to say the lie is deep. The lie is deep that you are hearing from the christians in your life or the christians on the internal. Tina, tell me about the pac, because i have noticed and i love this outreach to fathers. I have noticed in the past few years that men are becoming increasingly aware and supportive of this issue and that they see clearly that abortion is Health Care. They understand that the women they love, whether it is their mothers, their sisters, their wives, these young men, that they need access to these options. How are you reaching out to fathers and how has the response been so far . Mika, good morning and thank you for having us on. You know, the courage of ryan and the courage of folks like amanda and lauren, plaintiffs in the other case in which the texas Supreme Court also ruled against them, shows why it is so important that we have a different bench. We are not going to have different outcomes in our state unless we have different judges on the texas Supreme Court. Yes, men are also rightly recognizing that exact that very simple fact, anD Certainly, you know, this is not only an attack on a womans reproductive freedom but certainly as ryan has laid out, an attack on his family. Certain the response that they have shown, an attack on a womans freedom, on a Familys Freedom to Family Plan but also the basic freedom that everyone in this country expects, which is the ability to listen to their doctor. These texas Supreme Court justices are not doctors. Theyre partisan elected officials, and for them to say that they know more than ryans Wifes Doctor is outrageous. But, again, we can fix that come november by flipping these three seats and putting our state on the right path. I think it is important to understand that, you know, in texas we dont have a formal ballot initiative, but holding these three justices accountable for what they have done, for what that bench has done and what they are very likely to do, mika. I mean there is nothing to suggest that the texas Supreme Court, as partisan as they come, all nine republicans, would act in any way differently than the Alabama StateSupreme Court which has gone after ivf, and these folks, less than two years from the anniversary of the fall of roe, theyre already talking about going after birth control. We know exactly where the texas Supreme Court will land on that issue. They have shown themselves, they have shown the real threat that they pose to reproductive freedoms in this country. I think what is also important, mika, sometimes it is lost in this is that texas was a postroe state before roe fell. Texas rights the playbook for the rest of the country. We had a sixweek abortion ban, no exception for rape or incest, for almost a year before roe fell. It is important to show what the court allows based on the Supreme Court, but it affects the rest of the country. Ryan, thank you for joining us and for sharing your story. Im so sorry for waugh and your wife had to go through. One thing i heard from republicans since the overturning of republicans of roe v. Wade there are provisions in the new law that should prevent the kind of situation that your family was put in, and yet time and again we hear that doctors arent clear about what theyre able to do. The Supreme Court and the lawyers on the republican side may say the doctors should be clear, but when you went you went to two different hospitals to try to get treatment. Was there clarity amongst the doctors about what they were allowed to do or did you think that they werent quite clear what the law was . Great question, and this seems to get brought up time and time again since we shared what happened. They were very quick to prescribe mifepristone. So when you are in the fog of hearing the devastating news that your baby no longer has a heartbeat, you count on the doctor to go, okay, here is what were doing, here is what is best for you, you need this procedure. It is called a D C, it is the same procedure used in an abortion. Our experience was, okay, here are your options. You can get this surgery essentially or we could write you this prescription, which is what we would like to do, and send you home to handle it at home. That was really scary, of course, anD Confusing because were supposed to go home and handle this . Why isnt the conversation, lets get this woman to a hospital immediately to do this procedure to help her and her health . Not, okay, here is what we probably should do but instead lets lets prescribe you this medicine. It feels very, very backwards. The doctors feel very scared and very unsure, and what i didnt know, what we didnt know is after youre sent home to do that on your own and it goes wrong, like it did with my wife, she still gets a positive pregnancy test. So you have to monitor the hcg levels, and hers are still high. She is still getting a positive pregnancy test, and what happened even though the baby is no longer with her, theres still there remains some of her potentially some of her Uterine Lining because she didnt get the surgical procedure. So she still may have to get a D C anyway. Theres still risk of infection, you know, sepsis can kill my wife. There are a lot of complications that come with sending Someone Home with this medication instead of just doing the procedure in the first place, which is what they seemed so scared to do because it is side by side with the word abortion. Calls himself tornado wrangler. If you feel it chase it i said if you feel it chase it all right. Here we go. Oh, shes perfect. Shes gorgeous. You thought you could destroy a tornado. We never had a chance. You want one . If you dont face your fears you ride em. That was a look at a new highly anticipated summer blockbuster, twisters. The movie offers a fresh take on the 1986 hit about Tornado Chasers in the infamous Tornado Alley who are working to increase their understanding about tornados as they risk their lives to save others. Joining us now, the movies costars glen powell, Daisy Edgar jones, Anthony Ramos along with academyawardnominated Director Lee Isaac chung. Thank for being with us. You and your cousins would watch it over and over again. Im wondering, first of all, how did that impact your decision to do the film . Secondly, how did it shape the character . How did it shape how you approached the whole project. I mean i think twisters the original was an iconic movie. Growing up in texas, you know, it is Tornado Alley. Obviously it is you know, tornados are sort of the monster in your backyard. You did Tornado Drills in school and, yeah, my cousins and i, i think we watched that vhs until it broke and then it became the first dvd ever. You know, it was really it was really for me it represented the ultimate summer blockbuster, you know, one of those movies i always wanted to make. Thank goD Career wise im getting to occupy the worldwide twister that i always wanted to occupy. It is pretty cool. Daisy, glen says you pretty much have a future as a meteorologist because you were the most wellstudied when it comes she went to boot camp. To weather. You even went to a weather boot camp. Tell us about that and, again, how it helped you understand what you are doing. Yes, i mean im from londOn And i play someone from oklahoma who grew up chasing storms. I was like, i need to do my research. We were so lucky because these storms in oklahoma, we got to actually meet a lot of meteorologists, we went to the national weather center, the whole cast went. So i did a lot of research, but, yes, im not sure i think i should stick to my day job, but maybe theres a future for me. I wouldnt think a lot of twisters in london. No not like in texas or where i grew up in mississippi, Alabama And Georgia where it is a regular occurrence. Yeah. Lets Take A Look at the clip from the film where all three of your characters are together as you chase down a twister as it forms. What do you see . Already has a nice structure. Moisture levels are just right. What else are you seeing . Flow the clean. Drawing tons of moist, air from the south. And when that moist Air Busts through the cap it explodes in the atmosphere, and the vertical Wind Sheer begins to create the up draft. And here is the mystery. We see the hook on the radar. What are all of the invisible factors coming together . It has to be perfect. It is a mix of what we know and everything we cant understand. It is part science, part religion. Come on. Come on. Please, please. Come on, come on, come on. Yeah, baby here we go. Whew. Did you see that . Thats a tornado right there, baby. Get some photos of that. Theres the tornado, natures masterpiece. Im going to put it out there. Seems like a really bad idea. Anthony, you filmed this in the summer in oklahoma, there were tornados. Yes. Did you see any . What was it like . I didnt see any tornados. Isaac did, but i didnt. But we had some scarce. The first night i had dinner with isaac, i was in oklahoma and i had just flown in. We were having dinner and All Of A Sudden see the Windows Kind of rattling in the hotel, and then the doors are kind of doing one of these, opening anD Closing. I look at the waiter, hey, like, are we good, are we safe . The waiter is like, im used to this. Okay. Cool, then ill have sparkling water. So, isaac, you have a personal connection growing up around tornados. Tell us a little bit about that but also what drew you to this project which was very different from some of the other films. Absolutely. I grew up in arkansas, grew up around Tornado Alley. When the first twister came out it felt like a film that was made for all of us back home. So i didnt even know until i got to college how big twister was. I felt it was a special film for us, my family, my friends, and this film was really a chance for me to go back home and make another film and also to make an action movie. I have been dreaming and dying to have a chance of doing that, and not many people get that chance. Just to be able to have that chance was something i couldnt say no to. Man, that is so cool. So, glen, i got to ask you. So lets see, top gun, twisters. What is next, due . A remake of armageddon . As a huge fan of armageddon, dont tempt me. Again, thats the amazing privilege about twisters, is like i think again career wise where we all are, to reoccupy those dudes, that truck, a bunch of cowboy scientists chasing the wind. Theres just no better way to go to work. So, you know, thats the dream of hollywood when you get to do it right. You get to kind of return to being a kid. Yeah. Hey, look, seeing this, love seeing a big movie like this because last summer we, of course, had oppenheimer and barbie. People said where are the big summer blockbusters to get people back into theaters. This is The One. It feels like a film to be shared, a film to be enjoyed and the big screen. I think it is as close to chasing as you can get without getting rained on. Plus you see it in 40x. Absolutely. Anthony, tell us a little bit about the way this movie tried to pay homage to the original. You know, we had little nuggets from the original, like dorothy in the beginning, you homage to the original. We had these little nuggets from the original. Like the dorothy, you know, and in the beginning, Daisys Character Kate is like were all chasing in college and trying to get dorothy to work. We had James Paxton in the movie, bills son, which was cool, he did a cameo. We shot in oklahoma. We had all these kind of homages to the first film. Sadly i do miss i miss the cow. You know, i do but its you know, i think that isaac did an amazing job of taking inspiration from the original film and taking it to another level. Lastly and briefly, how did you nod to the original and make it your own . We loved the original film so it seemed like everybody was trying to bring stuff into this, including the cow, that was a constant people were trying to put into the movie. We were trying to show love to the first one but this cast, these are incredible new actors up anD Coming, doing incredible new thing. And the story is new, the science is new. Its the most complex tornados weve seen in cinemas so to be able to do that and make the film new to today is really exciting. So awesome. Watching it is going to be like riding a scary roller coaster. Thank you all very much. Thank you, guys. For coming on The Show this morning. We appreciate it. It introduces us to a warrior who cannot permanently die and is working for the u. S. Government in hopes they can find a way. Joining us now, the coauthors of the book of elsewhere. Thank you both for being here. Keanu lets start with you. Tell us what drew you to this, what inspired this idea. Um, i dont know if i can say where the idea originated from. But it was a character that i thought would be fun to create a world, this immortal warrior, half human, half god who is cursed with violence. And the book revolves around him trying to escape the curse, get in touch with his humanity. But also these other characters attracted to this power of immortality. And what draws people to the source of his power. China tell us more about the story and this remarkable character. Part of the plea sure with me is courseworkeanu was open to playing with the, quote, rules established in the economics. So we think of this as a version of the characters from the comic. But part of our wager in a book like this is you get to have all the kind of Fun And Fight and excitement but you also get to kind of explore some somewhat deeper themes and ideas in a way that maybe we hope surprises readers and you have more space to do that in a novel than a comic. So we wanted to make it loving to the Source Material but very much its own thing and a true novel. What was it like to collaborate with china on this literary project which is so different from so many of your other artistic endeavors. I was and am a fan of chinas writing and to have a chance to work with such a great artist was such is a pleasure. The creative mind, invention, and experiencing the world that he can create. China how about you who was it like collaborating with keanu. It was a complete delight. He was incredibly generous with what are his toys. He invited me to play with his toys and then he was extremely generous about them and incredibly open to ideas. And it was a true collaboration. I didnt necessarilies me to whether that would be the case going in and that was a reason i said yes and so excited because he was really excited about working together and being very open minded. So Id Love to give you some great story about how he was a nightmare but he was a total pleasure. Were glad to hear that. Lastly, as an artist, what is it like when a project is completed . You finish a film and your performance is fixed there forever. How does that differ from something like this when its words on a page . I can just say that, you know, to realize a dream or a hope of creating a story anD Collaborating with china anD Creating being a part of creating this work i can just say its a wonderful pleasure and people if they experience the novel really enjoy it. Good morning and happy Labor Day weekend. Were on tape this morning bringing you some of our recent top discussions we begin with Donald Trumps continued embrace of strong men. Long been a theme of his foreign policy and by his own admission his second administration would be more isolationist than the first. That likely would be welcome news to russias vladimir putin anD Chinas xi jinping whose two countries have strengthened diplomatic ties since Moscows Invasion of ukraine. And that is the subject of a new book entitled awing to be are autocracy incorporated and we spoke to Ann Apple balm. This is a followup to your last extraordinary work which you say in your defense your books usually have happy endings. If we want them to have happy Endings Theyll have happy endings theres no law of history that gives it to us. One of the things thats so mind bending about Donald Trump we have all grown up, been caught that history does have an arc and it moves towards freedom, justice and liberty, i know we all believed growing up that freedom was expanding, was on the march. We were going to beat the soviet union, we were moving in the right direction. Even when we werent we know the north star, freedom. Its shocking to hear Donald Trump align himself with putin, xi, kim jongun. When people ask what a second administration would look like, Donald Trump told you we would be big hungry. But how did that tom to be and why a large swath of republicans, my former party who used to be for reagan, the spread of freedom and liberty. How did they get behind this point, a man falling behind loving kim jongun. There are a couple ofses one is the cold war ended and some didnt want to move into the era of policies. For a lot of people that was boring and they wanted to go on doing ideological warfare. And another party when the soviet union fell apart there were enormous new markets to go into. We went into them, i think often in good faith. Right. But we assumed that would mean our values would move from, as we used to say, from the west to the east, and Liberalism And Freedom would spread. I think something different happened. Some of the ideas and especially the corruption of the autocratic world, instead, came in our direction. Thats what my book is about. Well, and how did that happen . I mean, how did we get infected . Globalization was supposed to spread free markets, free enterprise, free political thought across the world. Globalization meant that there is now one open global conversation, and anybody can participate in it. Right. And the russians and the chinese and the iranians can join our conversation. We saw a crude version of it in 2016 with the fake facebook pages and russian trolls and so on. Now, it is actually a lot more sophisticated than that. There are, you know theres a lot of thinking that goes into autocratic narratives. How do we convince people that autocracy is safe, stable, and secure, and democracy is divided anD Chaotic and degenerate, even sexually degenerate, and people put a lot of Money And Effort into writing those stories and pushing them out in lots of different ways, anD Convincing people of them. And its not even a question anymore of autocratic influence, like were so weak, can they influence us . It is that there are americans and europeans who have the same view and who borrow these ideas. The world is open. You can borrow ideas from anyone. You can borrow technology from anyone. You know, whether it is chinese Surveillance Technology or russian narratives, theyre up for grabs. The end of the day, katty, its all about money. If you believe that Donald Trump, at the end of the day, is all about, you know, the bottom line, its all about money, you know, you talk to businesspeople, talk to foreign governments, theyll tell you. Theyd much rather deal with china than the united states. Because when you deal with china, you pay off one or two people, you deal with one or two strongmen. You dont have to worry about a Subcommittee Chairman or woman holding up a bill that, maybe six months from now, well get from the house to the senate, and then maybe well get to you know, all the checks and balances, it drives a lot of people mad anD Crazy. There are no checks and balances to speak of in china or some of these other countries. Right. What you describe as the messiness of democracy and what Donald Trump wants is much more transactional view of foreign policy. Its not what america has had since the end of the second world war, but that is kind of what he represents. You give us this, well give you that. Forget the idea of global leadership, forget the idea about morals, values or ideals. As you say, it is about money. Anne, lets talk a little about viktor orban. Ive been reading what Jd Vance says about orban. It is kind of a very open, frank admiration for the guy, right . Whether it is, we should in america get the department of education just to ban the teaching of critical race theory, or like they have done in hungary, we should give money to couples to stay together. I mean, it is a weird, interventional view of the government in family life. Even if theyre not happy, well give them loans in order to stay together. How much does this election, where now you have the president ial and Vice President ial candidate on the Gop Side being so open about their admiration for someone like viktor orban, how much is this american election a Turning Point in the kind of narrative where you say we can have a happy ending or not and its up to us, is this an important moment in that story . It is a really, really important moment. I Cant Stress enough the ties between orban and the heritage foundation. These are the authors of project 2025, which youve just been talking about. He is also model for wouldbe authoritarians around the world because, of course, he was democratically elected. He was legitimately chosen. He was chosen to be leader of hungary. But once he attained power, he began to alter the institutions, so alter the press, alter the judiciary, particularly to alter the nature of the bureaucracy, to switch out civil servants and put his by the way, if you can just expand on that, altering the press not on the margins, taking over media companies, like, bringing charges against people that ran media companies, bugging the phones of reporters, telling media companies that werent positive, ill tell ya what, you can leave the country. Were going to keep your company. You can leave the country, or you can go to jail. I mean, like no, no, it was this isnt a light touch. It was not subtle. It was not subtle. He also arranged for billionaires or millionaires who he had empowered through government contracts to buy media companies. As the media became weaker in hungary, like it has everywhere else, you know, he found people who would step in and take over. It was actually often changes of ownership. It wasnt direct censorship like in the olden days. Coming up Actor And Producer michael douglas joins us with his new documentary. Well be right back on this special Holiday Edition of Morning Joe. There are many reasons for Todays Division one is economic. The traditional root to Wealth And Success has been cut off for many americans. Capitalism has become an insiders club, giant multinational cooperations and both parties are killing the american dream. This was supposed to be the land of opportunity. The Middle Class is shrinkening. Wheres the dignity in realizing theyre a payment away from being evicted. A look at the new documentary americas burning. The film examines the connection between the united States Economy and the future of democracy, arguing a system of capitalism run amok is partly to blame for a widening political divisions. Joining us now is the Executive Producer and narrater as you heard there, Academy Award winning actor, michael douglas, and the Writer And Director of the project, David Smick. Great to have you here. Good morning. The man who lost No One on an Academy Award saying greed is good is The One narrating this film. What brought to you this project . Watching over the years how things were getting more divisive and vitrioloic and long before the present persons who are running for office. And then David Smic was kind enough to introduce me to his project that he was writing, and i thought that this was a very interesting point, really crucial about how economics is playing such an important role. Its not talked about enough, and i was very, very happy to do it, proud to do it. David, where do you trace the things of things beginning to run amok which is the game being rigged in many ways for the wealthies and rigged in many ways for the haves and not lifting up everyone with it . Part of this is personal. I grew up in baltimore, blue collar baltimore, as we call it. Blue collar neighborhood. My next Door Neighbor drove a Cement Truck and my best Friends Father was a plummer and hes a plumber. So ive lived in two worlds. I grew up in that company and yet ive set up a company for financial advisers for some of the best traders in the world. George soros was my first client and im living in this dual world, and it dawned on me that weve had this extraordinary experience of wealth generation, 40 years, which is the envy of the world, and yet only half the country has been able to participate. The half that owns stocks because the wealth has been distributed via the equity markets, and so if youre a wage earner, you have you barely kept up. And ill give you two figures and then stop, but if you we were just talking about it. If you look at the stock market, the dow from 1980 to the present, 3,800 increase. We should be the rest of the world is envious. They wish they had that. The only problem if you look at wages, real wages, according to the st. Louis fed, youre talking about a total of 16 , so i cant get that out of my mind. I mean, were giving all these explanations for why were divided as a country, and very few people talk about economics, and the difference with me is i dont think theres an alternative to capitalism. This is not bernie sanders went that direction. We have to fix capitalism. We have to we to invite half of the country to be to have a ticket to the party. You know, michael, listening to david and his roots, i come from a long line of plumbers, but we somehow seem to run away from the class distinctions in this country created by the wealth gap. I mean, theres a specific group of people and families in america who carry the load in iraq and afghanistan fighting for america. Theres a specific group of people in this country who got absolutely crushed in 2008 by the collapse of the economy and are still on their knees trying to get back up on their feet. Do we know, do you think do we know who we are as a country, as a people . Well, we know how important the Middle Class is. I did a series a while ago playing Ben Franklin and discovered really that Ben Franklin was sort of the founder of the Middle Class in this world, and we have lost it. Its decreasing, and its not rising up. Its going down. Middle class used to be something you were proud about. You could afford your kids going to school. You had a living. You would take a holiday and a vacation. And now the Middle Class is struggling paycheck to paycheck. So i think that is the issue that david is speaking about. And we just have to increase the hourly wages to a degree. I remember in my lifetime the first time somebody was a billionaire. Now youve got a contingent of groups that own over 100 billion. These are numbers that are just staggering. And i think we should really have to address it because its getting out of whack. David, this actually is an optimistic film. People should understand that. Lets watch a clip where you hear people who still believe in this dream and about americas future. Look, and this is the polyannA In me. People are fundamentally good. People hurt for each other. AmericA Is a good example. Theres no country on this earth more philanthropic than america. They believe in the american people. We all have our politics. We all have our hates and youre fears, and deep down there is a love of country that i think prevails. Every time i hear that the american dream is fading, i look at the latino community. Were making progress. Maybe not as fast as we want. Maybe not as good as we want, but were making progress. So you say, david, we can do it again. We can save the Middle Class. Larry summers is in the film, and he makes a very persuasive argument that we have a history of resilience. We botcheD Civil rights. We came back. We have a history of resilience in so many area, and we can do it again if we but what bothers me right now is we are so fixated on the current situation so we have this we have these two candidates, but we have these issues. Lets call them x, Y And Z. On January 20th one of these guys is going to win, and were still going to have x, Y And Z there. Were not digging deep. Were not looking at the root causes of how we got into this mess. Why we hate each other so much, and so im this this film is an attempt to you either dig deep or a 30,000 foot observation, but Thats Part of the reason to get to us think long term what kind of america we love. I do love, michael, that this film is really for 80 of americans who dont hate each other, who arent screaming on tv, on social media. We are the country that Ken Langone is describing there. We are the country that Leon Panetta describes. Has that been your experience in this country thats given you the life you have . Its extraordinary. But im at a point right new, for instance, my brother is on the other side of the ticket. We dont talk to each other anymore. The divisiveness has become ridiculous, and its really an issue of party before country, and i would really hope with this leadup that we have find those things that bring us together and solve this economic question because i think that will ease up a lot of the pressure. Amen to that. The new documentary is called americas burning. It opens in selected theatres nationwide on friday. You can also visit americasburningfilm. Com for locations where you can see it. Executive Producer And Narrater michael douglas and writer and direct saved smick thank you. AnD Coming up next, Katie Ledecky. , Katie Ledecky. When we spoke to her before she left for the olympics, Katie Ledecky was three medals away from being the most decorated athletes in history. And she managed that with three more medals. Her new memoir is titled just add water my swimming life. Katie, it is so great to see you. I was in paris in 2012 excuse me, london 2012. You were 15 years old thinking about the world suddenly knowing your Name And Everybody having these incredible expectations for your career. When you think back to the first games and winning that first gold, what do you think of that 15yearold girl . Well, it feels like yesterday to me in many ways and i wrote about it in my book, some of the memories that i have from that race, flipping at the 600 mark, knowing that i only had 200 meters left to win olympic gold and get my hand to The Wall first. So that was a very memorable start to my international career and im really happy that 12 years later im still competing at this level and getting to represent Team Usa at the highest stage. And yet now here you are moving over to paris 12 years later, this is your fourth olympic games. How are you feeling now as sort of the veteran of the american olympic swimming team and the competition you will be facing this time around in paris . Im feeling good. Weve had a great couple of weeks of Training Camp together as a team, the swimming team. Were in croatia right now and headed to paris in a few days. So were gearing up and im happy to help some of the younger swimmers, the rookies on the team, get a feel for what the olympics is like, give a little bit of advice, but they seem really confident and they seem really ready and to just be on this team is so hard just to make it through the olympic trials so theyre wellprepared and im excited to see what we can do as a team. Katie, of course, good luck, we will all be rooting for you but as you detail in your book, i mean, swimming is so hard, its often very solitary, it is physically and mentally demanding and yet now this is 12 odd years just of olympic competition, obviously you swam long before that. How do you keep yourself so motivated to keep doing this . Well, my answer to that question is the book. I detail what i love about the sport and really all the people in my life that have contributed to my life in the sport and my life out of the sport. Really just that balance that ive been able to have in my life that has allowed me to continue to compete at this level and enjoy the grind, enjoy the training every day. I have the best teammates, the best coaches, best family. Thats my mom, mary jen, who swam growing up and she was The One that got me into the pool along with my brother. My brother michael, he was The One i followed into the pool and onto the Team And Theyve been part of my journey ever since day one. So, katie, in the book you explain the mental edge that you have as a distance swimmer and you write in part this, it comes down to how youre made. Ive known i had an engine since i swam my first mile, when i was probably 11. Irnl i remember swimming that distance for the first time and walking away from it thinking, that wasnt so bad. Mentally, ive learned that im wired as anaerobic swimmer. I embrace routine. I lean into the regularity. The endless laps become a kind of meditation. Its a bit like walking through those spiraling zen gardens, a way to calm the noise of the world and let the Consistency And Predictability of swimming back and forth wash over you. I dont have as many fast twitches as the sprinters and i dont have the technique to be a 50 meter freestyler, but psychologically im built to endure. I love that and i love how you look at your work as sort of a Mindfulness Routine instead of work. Im curious, is that also where you get your confidence . And what about days, if you have any, when youre not feeling that confident, how do you cope with that . Yeah, it really is something that i see as something thats taught me so much, the sport has taught me so much about determination, resilience, how to get that confidence and really for me i get that confidence from my training, from pushing myself every day, from having my teammates anD Coaches push myself push me, and really just that drive comes from within and really im proud that ive never hit the Snooze Button once in my life. Wow. Wow. No. My mom made me good snacks for Morning Practice that got me out of bed, but i always loved those car rides to the pool with my family and my parents, they were they were our chauffeurs growing up to and from the pool every day and i owe a lot to them and, again, all the people around me. It truly does take a whole family. Nice. Let me say you truly are built differently if you have never hit the Snooze Button, katie. Extraordinary. I know. We will hit it for you. One of the things people love about you is your humility. So this might be a hard question for you to answer, but we watch you swim and we watch how much you win by and we go, now shes doing that against the other greatest swimmers on the face of the earth. Theres No One better that you could be competing against. So to what do you attribute that . Why are you heads and shoulders above the rest of the world . Is it a physical thing . Is it a mental thing . What is it as you think about it . I think its a combination of a lot of factors. I think first off there is a lot of great competition out there. Im going to be facing some really tough competitors these next few weeks so im excited for that, but really i think the Goal Setting that ive been able to do my entire swimming career has allowed me to break these records anD Continue at this level and i kind of had a knack for Goal Setting from the start. I would and i would write them down even for my 8 and under races when i was first starting to swim. So ive continued to do that, continued to set bigger and bigger goals for myself and thats what motivates me, thats what keeps me going in the pool every day and just continuing to believe that i can achieve these goals that i set my mind to. Its so much fun for the rest of us to watch. The new book is called just add water my swimming life. Well be right back with more Morning Joe on this Labor Day holiday. We are spotlighting another incredible group of women who have rejected the conventional wisdom their best years are behind them. These women in their 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond have achieved success and impacted life later in life by overcoming obstacles. When we first started in 2021 it was so successful we went global expanding the list from the u. S. , asia, europe, the middle east and africa. And this year from a Film Maker to a 65yearold Sports Team Owner to an actress at 94. This list may be our most impressive yet. Take a look. Is being over the age of 50 an Advantage Or Disadvantage in your current work . Im choosing to really believe in the experience that ive lived in making me a better performancer, a better businesswoman so i refuse to let it be a disadvantage. But halftime report is not set up that way so im finding ways for what is i believe a deserved Opportunity And Fighting for it. Its absolutely an advantage and i wouldnt have it any other way. I have this plethora of experiences that one has built on the other thats built on the other through several companies and i couldnt have done that in a compacted amount of time. I had to live through the highs and lows of different projects and different company cycles. All of that is cumulative to the experience i bring today in my current role. Being over 50 is the most liberating. Like seriously, i know myself. Like being over 50, youre more lean than life, you know what you like, what you dont like. A lot of people will look at me and say i cant believe shes over 50. I dont always act like im over 50. I act age appropriate when necessary but when im with my players, i feel in my 30s. The long shot can be very profitable. You say that about yourself. Is that what you look for in entrepreneurs, the long shots . Im really looking for the long shots because in a Power Log distributed world you are looking for long shots. Its really the few that will generate a lot of profitability. I never imagined or fathomed what im doing. Theres No One i could look to what im doing. Ive only been making films 12 years. Theres no Black America female Film Maker thats been successful for years. So i look at Film Makers, spike lee, working in film, television, commercials, Documentary And Thought could a black woman do that . When you bet on yourself, when you utilize the perseverance that it took to get you to that status, its the same kind of gal it takes to go in there and ask for what is your worth . You deserve that. I now come at things with a different level of belief in myself. And a fight. Im not knocked over easily anymore. So i i im going to forever peak. Im going to keep peaking. Why should there be one peak . Its when you start to categorize it as your time is up, youve had a good run, its over whob decides that . Truly it is about your decision. You decide when its too late. You decide when you dont want to try anymore. You decide when youre going to lean in a little bit. You decide how you want to be in the world each day. You are the director of your life. You call action in the morning when you wake up. Maybe you just take one step and the next day another step, but you decide how far you can go, No One else does. Here to talk about the women on this years incredible 50 over 50 u. S. List is, of course, maggie mcgrath, a driving force behind the list. Also with us, uma abedin, the Vice Chair of the know your value and the 40 50 summit, which celebrates is it lists in a multigenerational Mentoring Fashion in Abu Dhabi and New York city. Maggie, the women on this list come from dozens of industries, including biotech, retail, architecture and beyond. Tell our viewers what was so hard about making this list and what stuck out about our group of women . Reporter the process is a process that takes many, many months we vet hundreds of nominations from the public and do reporting to find our own candidates who will be good for the list. We send the semifinalists to the judges who tell me they have a hard time deciding. Entrepreneurship is a huge theme, we have 75 or so women who have founded or owned their company who are on this years list. And a lot of them got the entrepreneurial bug over the anyone of 50 one is diana levy, she was a stay at home mom, but two of her kids were diagnosed with Celiac Disease and so she wanted to make something they could eat. So those are the highlight stories we have this year. This year a number of women in politics and policy also made the list. Who jumps out at you . Three names that jumped out at me even though its an incredible list. Valerie jarrett with an incredible story. At 52 named senior adviser to President Obama and the longest serving senior adviser to a president. That is correct. A history as a successful businesswoman, worked in federal government and now runs the obama foundation, the ceo there. She wrote a memoir about finding her voice and how to pivot when life throws a Curve Ball your way. Also on the list is cindy mccain, the wife of senator john mccain, senator from arizona. She was this beautiful figure you saw on screen not recognizing or realizing her own history as a businesswoman, fast forward today she is the executive director of the u. N. Food program, world food program, excuse me. Previously having served as u. S. Ambassador to the u. S. Agency as for food and agriculture. An extraordinary leader and so worthy to be on the list. And this is one of the reasons i love how diverse the list is. La tasha brown, the cofounder of black voters matter. At 53, she selfidentifies as an activist and a Community Organizer but also an artist, singer. She has such a diverse background and shes a leader in leading sort of the get out the vote effort, voter suppression, voter registration, how to reach marginalized, particularly black, communities. And showing Everyones Vote matters anD Counts. Those are the three standouts from that incredible list. Living longer, living better entering success later in life, its the long runway so younger women can calm down, take a couple of detours in life, its okay. No one is in a rush. I grew up in a rush, No One is rushing anymore. Youll hear more about the women who made our 50 over 50 in the weeks to come. The 79yearold has served nearly 50 years if prison after being convicted for the 1975 killing of two fbi agents. He maintains his innocence to this day. Fbi director Christopher Wray who argued against granting parole praised the decision saying, quote, peltier has been afforded his rights and due process time and time again and repeatedly the weight of the evidence has supported his convictiOn And his life sentence. Lets bring in right now, Rock NRoll Hall of famer, stevie vanzant. He wrote a piece called i deeply respect the fbi. Its in that spirit that i say theyre getting this very wrong. Thank you for being with us on a very important topic, and i must say what is so interesting is your respect. Youve got great respect for the fbi, for cops that you have met through the years, by people who are protecting us, and thats why when you write something like this and take a stand like this, it really does it really does grab attention. Talk about this case and how you got involved in it. Well, i have been involved now i wrote A I did the research back in the 80s and i wrote a song, did a video about it around 1989. So im, like, six President S in on this thing, and joe, its the most outrageous miscarriage of justice. I mean, short of an innocent person being executed, i mean, this is the most outrageous case ive ever heard of. Like you said, 50 years next year in jail without one shred of evidence keeping him there. I mean, you know, the evidence was falsified. The evidence was coerced. He did not fire the weapon, and i just i dont get it because, you know, the Hoover Fbi back then was a very, very different fbi, and i think Christopher Wray has done a wonderful job, you know, and merrick garlanD Can take credit also on turning the fbi around to one of the most respected organizations in the world right now, something that we can all be very proud of, but that was not the case back then. Nobody talks about the context of this case, you know, people act like, you know, two policemen showed up at the door in uniform, opened the door, and somebody shot them. That was not thats not the context. I mean, this started with wounded knee in 73, and the tribal chairman hired a bunch of mercenaries and vigilantes to basically go after the american indian movement and the traditional indians who were basically, you know, just fighting for their rights like usual, and 60 indians were killed. You mean, it was a war going on, and including my friend John Trudells House was burned down with his wife and three kids in it. So in comes the fbi, and what do they do . They go on the wrong side. They start defending the vigilantes and the mercenaries, you know . And thats because of the Hoover Fbi was just, you know, see a threat to democracy around every Tree Trunk and going after every progressive organization, you know, from the american indian movement to the black panthers to the young lords to you name it. Cesar chavez, womens liberation they were going after. Yeah. What confuses me is why why Christopher Wray who has turned the fbi around so beautifully, why would he feel he has to defend the Hoover Fbi from those days . I dont get it because they were not the same organization that they are now. We have reverend Al Sharpton with us, and rev has a question. Hey, rev. Go ahead. Stevie, i thank you for talking about this issue because peltier certainly has been an issue for a long time, and i think the way you frame it, and i want you to really elaborate on that, if People Today dont understand the fbi of 73 which was the fbi that went after the groups you said, they went after Martin Luther king. I mean, they were bullying Martin Luther king. Thats right. It is in that context that peltier was gone after. So for you showing your great respect for the fbi today, it couches it differently than those that seem to be antifbi. Youre anti what was done in that Error And Peltier is part of that. Elaborate on that. Youre absolutely right, al. I, you know, i identify as an independent Law And Order liberal, okay . And i have a lot of friends in Law Enforcement. We give the biggest Law Enforcement fundraiser every year for charities in New York city, and i mean, hoover was just completely out of control in those days. As you say, i mean, they went after the black panthers that had a free Breakfast Program for the kids as you know. Right. And they saw that as a threat to democracy, you know . I mean, they put a microphone under Martin LutherKings Bed to destroy the civil rights movement, all right . I mean, thats the Hoover Fbi, you know . Why would anybody want to defend that . I dont get it. I mean, because this is a whole different fbi now, and they are thwarting all kinds of terrorisms, keeping us alive, and we certainly appreciate that every single day right now. I mean, with all the stress were getting from around the world as well as domestically, theyre doing an amazing job, and i dont understand why they feel it necessary to defend an fbi that tried to literally destroy the civil rights movement, all right . Not just progressive movements. I mean, you know, and they werent always pulling the trigger, you know, but they were supporting those that were, you know . They shot fred Hanson And Mark clark in bed, you know, it was just outrageous what was going on back then, and its very hard for people now i mean, how old was Christopher Wray . Like, 9 years old when this was going down . How many were actually alive to witness the different context, and a different environment that was going on back then which was just very, very different than now. Yeah. Different. Different context, different time, different place, and radically different fbi. Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Musician and activist, stevie vanzandt. The news continues now on msnbc.
