We had pulled up and stopped on the side of the road and two sheriffs walked up on either side of the car. We rolled the windows down. Did the Person Know who you were . A detective had a recorder rolling. You could see here Charlotte Sobbing and steve talking. Someone else talked to the detectives too. A man who showed up minutes after the deputies got there. It was certainly a gruesome scene. Not only a large amount of blood on Carols Body but also on the furniture that was nearby. Blood spatter that had been castoff onto the walls and other items as well. That tells you something how she died . She certainly died a violent death. Something else. As he surveyed the room he could see whoever did this was trying to fool them. How did he know . When he looked past the obvious, he couldnt help but notice things had been moved around after carol was dead. There was a letter that was placed overtop of her body. That along with some of the blood that had splattered onto a bookshelf and then the shelf was knocked over. Obviously, several minutes after the blood hit it. Unlikely it was tottering and eventually collapse . That could not of happened. Thats a pretty significant detail. Absolutely. Staging. There were even drops of blood outside of the door. The Blood Trail the detectives to another discovery. Shoe prints outside the house. There was a lot of tracks out there. The house next door, a lot of people want riding their. Carol too. Horses, animals. People use that area and there were a lot of tracks. These tracks were unique. They were fresh. They found carols footprints from her jog that evening but there were others. Her track as it went out, the Suspects Track then stepped right on one of hers. She went out and then the suspect came into her house. You had a sequence of tracks. Yes. 50 feet from the main house was the Guest Cottage which carol had rented out to that tenant, jim knapp. Jim knapp was one of the first ones to arrive at the scene after the deputies had arrived. The detectives asked him, where was he that night . Jim knapp was ready with a story. He had been babysitting one of his boys at his Exwifes House when the incident actually occurred. You would have to pin him down to make sure he had proof . That is correct. Another detective turned on his recorder as Knapp Rambled on about his relationship with carol. But he didnt stop there. He seemed very eager to tell them about carols exhusband, steven democker. Were already. And they asked him to come to the Sheriffs Department, where he told them the same thing so, by so, by the time steve arrived, detectives were old already suspicious. They asked him to come to the Sheriffs Department where he told them the same thing he told his daughter. He was riding his Mountain Bike when he got a Flat Tire. Heres the whole thing with it. There certain, certain things going on. Like i said, weve got a suspicious death. Right now, we dont have any other person. We have no other person right now. It was a long night in that little room. The detective gave Steve A Blanket and asked again about that trail. The proximity of where the trail is where you were riding. I wish i chosen a different trail. I wish you had chosen a different trail also. If i had done it, what have chosen to be right near the scene of what sounds like maybe a crime. Maybe so but wherever he was he picked up something the detectives couldnt ignore. Very fresh, multiple scratches. On his arms and legs. Steve said he got those riding a rough Mountain Trail on his bike. Detectives photographed them. Before letting him go home. Meanwhile, overnight, there detectives searched Steves Office and his home, garage. They took pictures. Lots of pictures. After the autopsy the next afternoon, the Medical Examiner reported that carol died from blows to the head administered by some blunt object, seven times her killer hit her. With what . The following week says friends and family mourned, they peel back the layers of Stephen Carols relationship. Soon found evidence that the recent divorce was no divorce is pleasant, but . We looked into emails and we learned that carol was very unhappy with the outcome of the divorce. They argued heavily back and forth. Up until the day of her murder. Steve made good money as a financial adviser and agreed to pay 6000 a month in spousal support. When somebody makes over 500,000, you would assume that a 6000 monthly payment is not a big deal but he was spending way more than he was making. He was having to borrow money from his parents almost monthly. When hes making half 1 Million . That is correct. The 6000, he was going to be unable to sustain his lifestyle. Those numbers were for 2008, year like when a lot of people, Steve Hemorrhaged money because of the financial crisis. To the detective, that 6000 sounded like motive and might explain what the murder occurred when it did, at The Beginning of july. That payment started june 1. The second payment was due july 1. She was murdered July 2 and the payment was never made. I wasnt there. Again and again he denied killing his exwife and was out mountain biking the evening she died. Look at this. Along with Shoe Prints near Carols House after the murder, police also found Tire Tracks, bike tires. We then were able to see that the bike had been stashed and the individual walked right to the back of her house. They did not take direct impressions of those she went Tire Tracks as investigators frequently do, but they did take pictures. It looked like the treads on steves tires and while no matching shoes turned up, they discover that steve once bought a pair that might match. And then, there was a curious business of the Murder Weapon are possible Murder Weapon. Remember the corners report that she may have been hit with a Golf Club . When investigators learned that, something clicked in their memories when the first searched through Steves House. There were Golf Clubs in his garage. Lets go back and sees them. Its a moment where you go oh, my goodness, we may have overlooked something. They returned to Steves Condo and sees the Golf Clubs and tested them. They could find no evidence that any of them was the Murder Weapon. There was something else. In the first search of the condo, a detective remembered seeing a Golf ClubCover Or Golf sock on a shelf. Looked at the photos and there it was. When they searched the garage a second time, it was gone. The shelf itself had apparently been sort of rearranged. Was it possible that now missing Golf Sock belong to a different Golf Club . One that was no longer around. One used to kill Carol Kennedy . Did steve knowing he was a suspect get rid of the Golf Sock because it was incriminating evidence . Seem like every trail they followed led right back to the same person they had suspected all along. Carols Friend Katherine knew who that was. I didnt believe steve did it but i couldnt think of anyone else that would possibly do any harm to carol. And so, three months after carol was killed, they arrested steve to mocker on the charge of Firstdegree Murder. Steves sister sharon. Im trying to imagine what it was like for the family. Still, the whole Democker Family gathered in the court which had been scheduled for Christmas Eve 2008. Then, it was delayed. It was this crushing blow seeing that the wheels turn painfully slowly in this process. We left and were standing in the corridor.
