This past hour, Vice President harris said he spoke with the parents of Israeli American Hostage Hersh Goldbergpolin and expressed her condolences. The other five hostages are all now identified. An israeli source tells Nbc News if forensic examinations are correct, they were shot shortly before they could be rescued. Their bodies were found in a tunnel in gaza and returned to israel. Several democratic lawmakers have renewed calls for cease fire. We have several reporters in place ready to go through all these new developments. Up next is Nbcs Matt Bradley in Tel Aviv. Matt, lets talk about the scene for the protests. They were loud and boisterous the last hour. How about now . Still out, still playing drums, still yelling every once in a while, chanting. You have been seeing on the screen the faces of those six young people, who as you mentioned, were killed by hamas right before they were found, their corpses were found by the idf in a Tunnel Underneath Rafah just on the edge of the Gaza Strip. It was the way in which that happened that has really driven home to israelis just how difficult the situation is going to be getting these hostages back if they dont get a hostage deal. That was just last week. One hostage was rescued alive. This was one of the very few. That is why Benjamin Netanyahus constant parade of Military Pressure on hamas has continued the incursion into the Gaza Strip has been the best way to release the remaining hostages. Reporter it is great to be with you on this horrible, horrible day. There is no were seen in the execution of an innocent hostage. That is what we are now seeing them respond to. The anger israel. It complicates negotiations from the perspective of making it more urgent. If anything, now making it harder. You know, all of israel, i think, right now, is in deep mourning, we are reaching out to those involved in the hostage efforts, they are devastated. Hersh goldbergpolin, as an american, adds another level of pain in the united states. I think this is a strategic moment for the Prime Minister to decide how he wants to accelerate, that is, Advances War going forward. It is really a fork in the road with key decisions. The crowd, like we are seeing right now, is likely to grow with this. Yeah, 100 . You know, it feels like there is a visceral reaction to this from people around the world. I have gotten a number of communiquis from people, i should say, but it is almost as if these young people, the six, these survivors of 11 months in likely deplorable conditions, only to be killed shortly before the idf was able to rescue them. We do not know the circumstances but we do believe, according to reporting, they were shot. There is something about that. These kids were survivors for this long, only to end so tragically in these tunnels under offer. Reporter yeah, alex, it is a horrible story. The whole war is a horrible story but this episode, this is terrific. According to reporting and people i am talking to, not only did these six young people survive underground, living in hell more than 10 months after being kidnapped from a peace festival, they were murdered and idf went underground so the level of evil that hamas demonstrates in this is clear. That should also be part of the calculation. It is clear hamas does not have any military leverage in these ceasefire negotiations. They are devastated and decimated. Gaza has been bereft, quite frankly. Tt they are willing to execute the hostages in Cold Blood. It looks like the israeli defense forces were about to free them. This is a real moment, a real moment for the Prime Minister, who looked squarely in the eye of the israeli people and say what his priorities are. Will he get these hostages released . We know what the alternative is as we just saw with these horrific executions. Well, that is what he should do, but do you believe he will do that, joel . I asked the question and i will say it with somewhat cynical a nature. The reality is, many have suggested if Benjamin Netanyahu keeps this war going, he maintains power. Win this war ends, god willing as soon as possible, that most israelis want him out of office. Will he communicate directly and honestly with the israeli people on his plans and what he intends to do to bring about the end of the war, bring a ceasefire about and bring the rest of these hostages home, dead and alive . Reporter yeah, alex, i more than forgive you for being cynical on this question. As we heard from the interview, it is pretty evident that prime Minister Netanyahu is afraid of losing power, not only because he would lose power but it would set in a process where he it would go forward and if the wheels of Justice Move in their case against him and put him at risk. He has two impediments to keep him from moving forward on a domestic perspective. First, just as these cases of justice corruption, he is holding his right flank together to keep him in power and the right flank is opposed to a deal. They believe any arrangement with hamas would empower hamas. That is not where the israeli defense forces are. There was a scene a couple days ago, apparently in a Cabinet Meeting where there was an argument with netanyahu in front of the cabinet that they needed to move forward on a deal and that the hostages , they did not and he was shouted down and defeated in a small vote in the cabinet by the right wing minister. You know, netanyahu is holding on for his life. The question is, Will Israeli Democracy force him and other ministers to say enough is enough. Again, i do want to go back to the point that this is hamas at its worst. This is what we know about hamas. This is really a question of netanyahus position, based on the reality, the gravity and the savages of hamas. Spoke with Jeremy Bash in the last hour who said there was a confirmation of the seven remaining. Three are dead but four are still alive, at least that is what they have intelligence to believe at this point. There is no way to express words of empathy for them. What the u. S. Can do is to continue to pressure, as we are doing, publicly, to push our error of allies to sit on hamas and to do what the president and Vice President are doing, which is constantly calling for a ceasefire, for a hostage deal. There is an ongoing negotiation. They are always a failure until the day they succeed. That has to be the vision. This is a moment also for the israeli public to do what it is doing, which is to step up. The united states, we can leverage that, put Public Pressure on israel, i believe, to continue to make the case to the Prime Minister that it is in his personal and political interest, as well, to achieve a ceasefire. It is devastating to know that these six hostages were murdered in Cold Blood with their rescue imminent. I mourn with the families of all six hostages and particularly the family of Hersh Goldbergpolin, who i was able to sit down with both of his parents and their courage and how they conducted themselves living a nightmare, i think needs to be an example for americans for the kind of result we need to demonstrate to get all the hostages home, whether through Military Force or through diplomacy. It needs to remain the critical imperative of israels military operations in gaza. What are you hearing currently from your constituents about the war in gaza . What do they say about the president s running as candidates and what they should do what they want their vote in november . Constituents, neither present support for israel to defend itself. They are distrustful of Benjamin Netanyahu to disentangle his own political interests from The Greater Good of the israeli nation and two, they are distrustful of his ability to execute a strategy in gaza that truly Marginalizes Hamas and returns the hostages. The reason i say that is, it is not sufficient to defeat hamas through military might alone. That is one element of it. What they fear is not destruction, it is reconstruction. How it will be led, whether rivera backed, what prevents hamas from ever governing again in gaza, that is what he fears and that is what we must bring to bear. Interesting there. Lets talk about the Harris Campaign because it is riding an incredible wave of momentum with an astonishing surge in voters registering with her at the top of the ticket. Are they saying the energy in getting out the Harriswalz Vote on Election Day . Yes, unbridled enthusiasm. The numbers back that up. During the week of the convention, i think 82 Million was raised, one third of those donations coming from first time donors, two thirds from women, teachers and nurses were the most common occupations of the donors. This is a grassroots momentum. And currently a goes all the way back to what Nikki Haley said earlier in this campaign. She said the first party that changes the top of this ticket will win this thing. Democrats did. Republicans didnt. So now Donald Trump looks around and hes got Jd Vance. We have Joy And Momentum and unity. That is a winning contrast. Yeah, Nikki Haley did say that. It may turn out to be prophetic. Lets talk about Harris Interview this past week. She was asked about some of her Policy Reversals which he first ran for president in 2020. She previously supported medicare for all, as well is a ban on fracking. Now she doesnt. She once argued about criminalizing illegal border crossings. Now she says there should have to be consequences. She said while defending these Policy Positions are valued has not changed. What is your assessment of that answer . Should she provide more clarity and does she need to . I think Policy Clarity is always helpful in president ial campaigns and american voters rightfully want to dig into an agenda. Kamala harris, i think, is actually right on. Her values have not changed. She wants healthcare for all, that is why she is pushing for Medicaid Expansion and the affordable Care Act protections and expansion. It is not ideological how we implement that. That is exactly what one wants to see and statesmen, Bedrock Principles and taking opinions from both ideological allies and people who disagree and set aside those into a new policy agenda. It is a complicated country with a complicated economy, we know healthcare is, katie, energy is complicated, we should be adjusting to new ideas. That is very different with what Donald Trump does. So i think one thing that is really important to point out here, is that it doesnt matter. I dont think she didnt have that postconvention bust. She has remained consistent and steady in polling and is maintained the lead over trump nationally and in most of the critical swing states. It is still very close and there is no clear leader at this point. Her campaign is now pivoting to call this an Underdog Campaign which is supersmart for a couple of reasons. They will be able to keep the Momentum And Enthusiasm going, not only with donors and the democratic base, which is necessary for cash funds and flow to keep advertising and operations going, but because of the fact they need to get people to the polls, with early voting beginning this month as it was just noted, it is important to remember this enthusiasm needs to keep going through the next 65 days. I think it is a really smart strategy right now to showcase this is not going to be a Landslide Election and that even the momentum is on her side, it needs to keep going in order for her to be able to win and defeat trump in november. How does she balance that with emphasizing her experience . Yeah, i think they are right to continue to call her the underdog. It is a smart strategy but it is also true. If we look back to 2016, Hillary Clinton was polling i had and she lost. There were a lot of assumptions made. Democrats definitely dont want to do that again. In 2020, Joe Biden won by Tens Of Thousands of votes in a handful of states. It was really close, despite a lot of people thinking it should not have been that close. You know, Donald Trump, Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton are all Household Names and they were when they ran. Vice president harris is someone the country is getting to know. She has not had as much time as those candidates, probably all candidates have had, as introducing themselves to the voters but one other thing worth noting, we have only had one sitting Vice President be elected to the presidency. That also makes her an underdog. She is a woman. She is a black woman. Of course, she is the underdog. I think our Countrys History already shows us that. What about the postconvention bump with women, ashley . Before chicago, it was 51 to 45 . Now look at it, 54 to 41 . White women went slightly more for trump in 2020. Could this be the pivotal change now in this election . I think so. This is why you see trump really scramble on how to pivot here when it comes to abortion. I mean, trump has consistently taking been taking credit for Overturning Roe and putting supreme justices on the court who did that. Now he is flipflopping and saying, now i dont know. Basically, now he is saying we will fund ivf through either the government or mandating it through insurance. I am sorry, but if you are going to put Supreme Court justices onto the court who were going to question and consistently question the legality of womens reproductive freedoms, this is going to do nothing. Women are not going to be gaslit. Theyre not to be calm and fall into this trap that Donald Trump and Jd Vance are putting out there. Having a woman at the top of the ticket on the democratic side is doubly going to continue the momentum and let voters know that trump has zero chance at getting that suburban female voter back that, you know, i think at one point in 2016, maybe tipped the scales a little bit in his favor but now they seem to be fully in Kamala Harris camp, which is a good thing, it is not just another trump no, it is a vote for freedom. Women completely understood that messaging and understood it is our body, our choice, our right and our future. That is exactly the messaging that is spot on by democrats. Shaniqua, there is a new Opinion Piece that discusses how harris is not calling attention to the racial and gender barriers she is breaking but letting the obvious speak for itself. The first black woman in the senate who ran for president in 2004 said this, nobody wants to hear on the first, in the first, and the first. What they want to hear is, what you are going to do for them. Do you think that has been the secret To Harris success, making this about voters and not about her . Of course, it begs this question, is Donald Trump remotely capable of doing that . Yeah, no, he is not capable of not making it about himself. He is not capable of not making it about Kamala Harris race or gender. We are seeing that he has continued to talk about, you know, Gender And Race and that doesnt help him. Smart on her not to focus on that. We can see she is a woman of color. We can see she is of color and a woman. What people want to hear from her are what her policies . What is she running on . How does she serve as an alternative to Donald Trump . We have already seen Donald Trump in the presidency. She is able to focus on making a contrast. Weve had a black person before as president , weve had a woman as nominee before. She doesnt have to rest on that to know it is true. Something that makes me excited to help her get elected but not something i need to focus on when talking to voters and trying to get them to turn out. Let me ask you about this, shaniqua. Harris is planning for her debate and preparing for tuesday. We are learning she is really aiming to get under trumps skin. I spoke with Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett about that yesterday. Here it is. She wants to appear as if she is the adult in the room and she has. What we will see is this whining child to will sit there and wont give direct answers and, honestly, will distract and be a bumbling fool. We have seen it on the trail when he starts talking about, you know, wind and he starts complaining about sharks. That is just really weird. He is off his rocker. Will harris be able to call attention to trumps lies and rambling world salads in a way Joe Biden couldnt . Yeah. I think a lot of people are going to be watching her for that exact reason. You know, we all know that the debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden is why Joe Biden is no longer running for president. Now everyone wants to see how will Vice President Harris Measure Up To Donald Trump in a debate . Most voters already believe that Vice President harris is going to win. Namely because when he lies, she is going to be able to point that out immediately. They dont have to wait for fact checkers to come around after. She can point out the lie right there. Hopefully, he will be pressed by moderators on it and have to respond to it. We know he is going to live. He is very undisciplined, as a congresswoman said, he, you know, he is a bumbling fool and will be incoherent. Vice president harris will seem like the adult in the room so it will be a really great opportunity for, you know, voters to see how these two compared to each other, standing sidebyside on stage. We already know that Donald Trump cannot really control himself around women. He certainly cant do it in other parts of his life and certainly in this election. I am curious about what this event is on thursday and what is the controversy around it . The controversy stems from the larger pattern. This is a situation in which Donald Trump participated in two fundraisers for January 6th convicts this summer. One in june and one in july. Now there is a third fundraiser. Theres some question on whether he will be there but either way, we see this pattern where he is showing support by either having it or being at these events. There is the additional fact that this comes just three weeks after Donald Trump said at a public event he was prepared to parting January 6th convicts that participate in the violence and had direct violence against Police Officers and the larger context is it is an ugly scene for the former president as a camping continues. Steve, who are the organizers and why would they choose this Golf Club as the backdrop. Why would Donald Trump allow them to do so. You are Tim Heaphy in that soundbite. That could present some kind of legal entanglement he shouldnt want to encourage. Yeah, exactly right. It is important to stay, when it comes to January 6th convicts, there is a growing movement on the right to see them as victims. Donald trump himself referred to them many times as hostages. I think it is no real surprise that given that, we have those supporters, those criminal supporters, Rioting Supporters that have chosen a Trump Value for property. They could have the fundraiser anywhere but they wanted it to be a trump owned property so they can emphasize the connection between Donald Trump and the rioters. I think that combination is activism. It is not subtle. It is intended to convey to the audience and to voters that they are part of one big ugly family. The fact he has been invited, even if he doesnt show up, we dont know if he is going to or not, some have suggested he will not, but he is part of this. He Cant Escape that, right . That is exactly right. A key part of his campaign has been these rioters, he talked about not just financially supporting them but offering them parties if he is elected. Now somehow he can surround parade himself from the January 6th rioters is ridiculous because it made it impossible for him to do so. Lets talk about backlash. What kind of backlashes out there and the whole J6 Gala in general and who is creating the backlash . I think Donald Trumps many critics seized on this as a great example of his indifference for the Rule Of Law and his criminal extension as a relates to his own political allies. They are really seizing this, not just the democratic party but the Harris Campaign and others are really seizing on the opportunity to label him as someone who is pathetic and supports criminals and who was prepared to let those criminals out of prison if given a second chance in the White House. I think the backlash is real and we will see more and more of that in the coming weeks and months ahead of the election, which is just nine weeks from tomorrow. It sure is.
