For stephanie ruhle. We are 71 days away from the election. Early voting starts in less than a month in the first mail in ballots will be sent out next week. The conventions are over and the threat to election day is an. One of the biggest days between know when that, the president ial debate scheduled for september 10 on abc. Now, donald trump is threatening to pull out. Here is nbcs Garrett Haake with more. Reporter tonight, the trumpet heres campaigns drooling over the residential debate. This Morning Trump casting doubt about attending and now a new wrinkle. The deal is we keep the same rules and now they want a change in the rules because she cant answer questions. Reporter in the last face off at the bys campaign request, candidates megaphones were muted while the other candidate was speaking to prevent interruption. Now heres campaign is asking for the microphones to be left on at all times. Trumps Campaign Objective but the candidates seeming to acquiesce today while taunting the Vice President. It doesnt matter to me. The truth is there trying to get out of it. Is she doesnt want to debate. Is not a good debater. Truck Vice President harris has been off the trail since her Acceptance Speech and sources tell nbc news she has held one mock debate. We have 75 days. Reporter all is trump was in battleground michigan looking to step on harris dash cam paid sources tell nbc news hes planning more aggressive fall travel and will heres the advantage on health care and abortion rights, trump aiming to Hammer Pearson two issues with a show shes vulnerable. The economy in the border. Under harris, American Veterans are treated worse by far than illegal aliens. Hey be seeing them stay at hotels . Veterans are sleeping on the streets. Reporter trump slamming the Vice President over the chaotic withdrawal from afghanistan were 13 u. S. Service members were killed three years ago. Today, trump laying a wreath at arlington. The humiliation if Afghanistan Set Off reporter my prayers are with their families and loved ones. My heart breaks for their pain and their loss. Lets bring in our leadoff panel. White house reporter for the Washington Post and a reporter for notice. Lets start with this debate debacle, if you will. Donald trump appeared in the video today asked by our own nbc drake taylor. He seemed to say tell reporters he prefers mics to be on but its about what they agreed to. Is this another sign that donald trump actually doesnt know how to handle Vice President harris . What he wants to do. They are scared or its a function of donald trumps, doing what to do and the candidate is running them. I would love to be onthe fly of the wall. I think its a process. Its a similar process to with the former president and before the biden debate going back and forth about the rules, questioning why he should even do it. Trying to undercut larger impressions of biden being a good debater. This is his process. Pomp and circumstance and hype it up but theres a reality that the former president hasnt figured out how to Vice President harris. What the lines of attack should be up for the heres campaign, they are excited right now. They recognize that something about the Vice President , was a what, triggers a former president. They know he can get upset and they want the microphones to be on because they want to goad ufn thats where they feel if he makes a personal attack or encroaches on her space as he did to Hillary Clinton in 2016, that could be used to their advantage. Yeah i know, at this point, it seems as though debate is in doubt. My wager is it will happen but ive lost money before. Who do you think needs it to happen more . Its a question of who wants it more. It seems as though the Harris Campaign wants it more but theres a question on the table, to they need a . Who needs the debate . At this point harris does need it more if only because condensed elections bring we are seeing. She needs to be in front of voters. People who who have not been as tuned in as they shouldve been the last four years as she has been Vice President. She needs the opportunity to go toe to toe against trump and show the country what that looks like. She needs to be on the debate stage countering trump. The democrats message in a clear and concise way. Unfortunately, President Biden couldnt do in the first debate. I get what they want the microphones on. Its about goading the president and i get why the Biden Campaign one of them off. They wanted President Biden to be able to deliver his message, that was her goal. The Harris Campaign goal is they know she can deliver even of trump is trying to talk over her. They hope trump says something during his time with the mics on when its not his turn. That so off message and outputting that it puts her over the top. I mean, its not a bad strategy. Tyler, again. I think the debate is happening. The candidates are preparing as though its happening. What can you tell us about the various Camps Reparations . The Vice President had started Debate Preparation assuming she would debate senator j. D. Vance. Her team had to play j. D. Vance and mock debate prep but that had not formally started but they are underway preparing for a debate in which he would play in that role similar to 2020. Obviously, things shifted dramatically. She has a team of aides that prepared her in 2020 and they are leading the debate prep. They pulled a long time mates, Policy Aids Have worked closely with the Vice President to help her prepare they are starting to hold mock debates at Howard University where she attended. She has return there throughout her political career for big moments and for practice is we expect to see this continue to ramp up and hold moore sessions. In a more traditional matter of going over policy and ideas and then leaning to the formal not mock debates. Trump has a different practice here. We know he underwent some prep before the biden debate. He and advisers felt that went extremely well and thats why were seeing this backand forth over what the rules will look like. Trump by all accounts, his team is satisfied with out that Debate Performance any privately told people went too well and he kicked biden off the ticket. I think he will continue to have less traditional Debate Preparations, going over policy. Is reporting that former democratic representative is she helping a little bit . She sparred with Kamala Harris in the democratic primary debates so she has been enlisted to help now, becoming a surrogate for the former president. Nontraditional experience there. I think the debate over the debate shows anxiety and the stakes for both sides. Arguably the most important day before election day to these two candidates. So much has changed the last month and thats the last time, the only time americans will see them in the same place. I will say the last time we were talking about a debate of this magnitude, it was between President Biden and former president trump. I have talked to many people that believe, joe biden would still be at this point at the top of the ticket. My question is, the strategic decision to have this internal conversation spill out into the rest of the world this morning. Last night when we went to sleep, was not a focal point that everyone was aware of. The debate about the microphones. I think its been the pattern that was in place when biden was on the ticket. They put that first marker down saying we want the debate. These are our requirements. These are the networks we want to have hand at first, the Trump Campaign tried to add onto that and the Biden Campaign was no, were not doing that. Then they acquiesced. Here again, you see the heres campaign putting out their own markers of what they want happen and dislike previously, the Trump Campaign has acquiesced. I wonder if we will see that now. There is a point two make about the significance of this debate and how its going to set up the rest of the days in the campaign. The june 27 debate didnt go the way democrats wanted. Here again, there goading the Trump Campaign to show up and they believe because they have a different candidate at the top of the ticket that it will go differently but there is potential downside for the Vice President. If, because shes not in the practice of engaging with reporters and not in the practice of having unscripted moments, we know she prepares, sometimes over prepares for these highstakes movements, but because shes not in the practice outside of the debate space, she could potentially be caught on the back foot. Its a place we know she likes to be because shes a prosecutor and likes to go back and forth in highprofile moments. But there is a downside for her potentially. And the same as ever trump. That something we heard leading into the trump and biden debate. He wasnt doing enough Public Events to be prepared for that back and forth. The first time he was off teleprompter, off script, challenged on his feet, we are seeing the similar concerns creep out ahead of what is ultimately the most important appearance. Lets talk about this. What folks are talking about is the lack of a sitdown interview that the Vice President has yet to do so and she has become the democratic nominee. The harris team said she will sit for an interview by the end of the month. The end of the month is this week. Friday. What do you think is most important for the Vice President to get across in that interview . And to whom is she getting across to. I have raised this issue with voters and for my colleagues and those in the media apparatus aetjr; hqeveryo feels a little differently. I think in this case, the people shes trying to reach, i think, are the people i think it comes down to those behind her. They support her and agree with her. To a lesser extent, the media, to be able to say that she can talk about policy without a teleprompter, to prove that she has the chops to be the person who is able to lead the country. I think thats the sort of focus of what the interview is supposed to do. It is supposed to show the people who are watching, and there are going to be whenever she does a sitdown interview, there will be millions of Average Americans who get glimpse and see clips online. The Highlight Reel of it. They will take away from that however she performs. I think the focus on having a specific format, this, she has to sit down with an interviewer who asked her what is in our mind, tough questions, and have good answers. Thats a metric that people who are used to watching politics are looking for and until harris puts that forward, people will continue to ask these questions about whether she can do it. Personally i think theres something a little bit self centered and that as we are trying to help shape what is going on in this campaign. We as the media. It is important for her to show that she does have the grasp on all the issues on how to, almost this gravitas necessary to be president and carry out the functions of the office. Let me throw something on the table here. A lot of candidates do a lot of interviews, and the gravitas has yet to show up in some of the interviews. I think its no secret, i was at one point a spokesperson for the president s ive seen her answer these questions. When we talk about polling. Posters, trump pollsters are predicting harris numbers after the convention and meanwhile harris advisers are signaling caution. I think bulls are not predictive but they are indicative of what voters are feeling. The question is, Public Opinion, i think, is often informed by what people see and read. Informed by the news. Could an interview about the Public Opinion and polling . What do you think, hes . Absolutely. Thats entirely possible that if she sits down for an interview and hits a home run or she whips it but it can have an effect on the polling, how people perceive her. You are right that polls are not predictive. Their snapshot of a moment that we try to infer something about the country at large. Its an imprecise science, but because we have so few days, that puts the pressure on these moments and these highstakes sitdown interviews on the debate. People dont have as much data to work off of is a what otherwise. Small things can have big impacts. Thats very true. If she hits a home run, dont know if that will bring her much up in the polls. This honeyman factor that trumps posters were talking about that does tend to happen after conventions, especially the Second Convention and thinks to timing we are seeing the heres campaign benefiting from that at this moment. I think when she does have this interview with whatever network she does, dont predict a huge bump in the polls but if it goes badly, could affect her slightly. I know you all want to chime in on the interviews. I will let you get your moment. I will say in the time we have left, harris and her running mate governor walz will be on the campaign trail this week. The be in georgia campaigning together for the first time in that state then she will have her rally in savannah. As the campaign cochairman mitch, are they going to do an interview on the bus . He said he didnt know what the moment. He thought the interview would have been. Obviously, interviews matter. Lets be clear. If theres a question, look at the president and George Stephanopoulos and many democrats, that interview on top of the other things that happened in the last debate that concerned them. I think we are on the same page. We will see when the interview happens. More than that, literally, people will start rooting in a couple of weeks. Mailin ballots are going out next week. I hear people talking about the honeymoon period but is it possible that literally this could be the tone and tenor of the campaign through election day . I think thats what they are hoping for. I think this surge moment on translated into actual actionable on the campaign, getting people out to door knock and sustain cash flow they are seeing right now. I think they are hoping. I think the interview is important. Its important to prove to the media that she can do one improve to the democratic that maybe they werent so right about her and shes actually can be a good candidate. I think its important for the american public. Im not saying she has to do 60 minutes the first time out or anything like that. I do think theres an opportunity to prove to the media class she can do it which is selfcentered, selfserving for us. Its a chance to prove to the American People about who she is. Tyler, you have the last word. We are speaking as if the Vice President has never done an interview in the four year shes been Vice President. Broader than that its not just doing the interview but what she wants to do as president. Theres questions about what is or policy platform . Whats her hundred day platform. What will she focus on them prioritize . Whats your vision for the American People . She has taken over the campaign and pick Day Running Mate and in the convention. We got life story, biography, and that makes sense for the phase of the campaign but theres you need to outline if you elect me, this is what you can expect me to fight for. We have some broad outlines of what that looks like. Her positions from when she ran for president in 2019 to now are different. She has changed a lot of where her policy, what she wanted to do in issues related to health care. Issues that matter to the American People. Thats a huge part of the interview is having her clarify what her vision is. Safe to say, america, everyone is questions for Vice President Kamala Harris. Tyler, jasmine, hayes, thank you so much. Coming up. When you think, let it sit with you. Who do you think of . I dont think donald trump comes to mind. How he is desperately trying to reframe the Republican Partys highly unpopular stance on abortion. How one state Election Board is laying the groundwork to block the certification of the election if trump loses. The 11th hour just getting underway. Why do couples choose a sleep number smart bed . Xfinity mobile was designed to save you money and gives you access to wifi speeds up to a gig. So you get high speeds for low prices. Better than getting low speeds for high prices. Right, bruce . Jealous . Yeah, look at that. Honestly. Someone get a helmet on this guy. Get a free unlimited line for a year when you add one unlimited line. Plus, get a new Google Pixel 9 on us. Bring on the good stuff. As donald trump tries to slow down as harris momentum, hes trying something that might seem a little far fetched. The former president told reporters he will, quote, be great for women and the reproductive rights while his running mate j. D. Vance told nbc news that donald trump would be to National Abortion ban if congress were to pass one. The same guy who said all of this. I put three Great Supreme Court justices on the court and they have been to vote in favor of killing roe v. Wade and moving it back to the states. This is something that everybody wanted. You have Negotiating Power with roe v. Wade you had none. You had no power. We have given prolife people tremendous power. Do you have regrets of the overturning of roe v wade . No regrets. I did something that most people felt undoable. For more, want to bring in maria, former Senior Adviser to Senate Majority leader harry reid and the National Political director of the indivisible project. Republican congressman of florida. Maria, what was your reaction when you heard these comments . I had a reaction. Donald trump can hide from his record but there are receipts. There are time lines. There are screenshots. He cant wiggle out of this and you heard it here. He doesnt regret it. Part of what were doing is making sure more people know that donald trump is to blame for the gutting of roe. We did it in arizona and ohio and they cant behind states only policy and pretend parties in the states are trying to undercut womens rights. Congressman, can i ask you what your reaction was . Its one thing for donald trump to be lying about its with the states now. Some of his advisers were split on that. Its another thing to make these forceful assertions about protecting womens reproductive care and siding with womens reproductive care when i literally just played a couple of clips and those are within the last couple of months . I think she nailed it when she said women are not student stupid. Donald trump thinks they are. His moments are dishonesty and betrayal and you see him betraying his base and trying to lie to the voters he betrayed in the first place on the issue of reproductive freedom. He clearly is reading the polls or at least knows this was getting him in trouble. Seven out of seven times when the issue has been pallet testing, the advocates for reproductive freedom largely aligned with the Democratic Politics have won. His position as a drag on his race but as maria said, the problem for donald trump is america has the receipts. The question is, what in this race actually matters . Even the prolife groups that he has aligned himself with who are offended by this and rightfully called him out on this flipflop, they are not going to move to harris. Are they not going to show up . I dont know if thats the case. I think the race will be framed by the surge of momentum and powerful candidacy of Vice President Kamala Harris against a listless donald trump who is no way to expand his base. He will not expand his base on this issue whatsoever. Maria, thats an important point. The position is upsetting and advocates for reproductive reading. Its upsetting advocates what they would call prolife, antiabortion advocates. Its upsetting everyone. I dont think the voters that are as upset particularly folks in line with the Republican Party Apparatus Position on this going to make it about and vote for Vice President harris but what about moderate republican women . Do you think this will speak to moderate republican women . All those Ballot Initiatives, kansas, theres not enough democrats in kansas to pass a Ballot Initiative but it passed and that means Republican Voters did have to vote for that the last time it was on the ballot. Two things. Trump created this hands down. He has no one to blame but himself. What im most curious about is not will voters accept a version of this are copping out that donald trump is doing. What i look at is how much will trump her down ballot . How much will it hurt in the arizona race . Where a lot of the voters like you mentioned to care about this and are going to continue to be offended by this attack and you cant say, leave it up to the states because in arizona, their version was an 1864 abortion ban. The Republican Legislature tried time and time again to maintain, to not let voters have their will and vote and in their constitution. He created this chaos and they are scare of the polls. The 30 seconds i have left, do you think more women are going to go to the polls in november given the issues that are on the ballot in key battleground across the country . Absolutely. Women will decide this election and they will decided in favor of Vice President Kamala Harris. Its the modern suburban voters are how you want to profile them but voters who said we dont want donald trump leading the country and we dont want him speaking for our health care for our family. Donald trump would sign a National Abortion ban. Women are not stupid. David charlie and maria, thank you very much. When we come back. Georges Election Board has a new Conservative Majority and they are using it to, the way elections are certified. Theres a new lawsuit trying to stop them when the 11th hour continues. We are following major news from Georgia Democrats artificially suing the state Election Board. In the filing, democrats argue new measures to alter the Georgia Election certification process are legal and could create chaos in november. I want to welcome Sampling Grass and host of two podcasts plugged in and gold dome scramble. Sam will make it make sense for us. Lets start with the lawsuit. What can you tell us . The lawsuit was filed by the Democratic National committee, the Democratic Party of georgia, and a handful of democratic looks election Board Members and state lawmakers. Theyre asking the court for, to declare the local election Board Members, their duty and certifying an election is ministerial. They check the box. And to declare that has to happen by the deadline on november 12, 2024. This lawsuit is supported by handful of democratic groups and not official Harris Walz Campaign but they are supporting the lawsuit and there Deputy Campaign manager said they intend to win it. Sam, its important that folks understand what the new rules are that the board proposed and how they could exactly impact the election in november. What are the rules that brought this lawsuit on in the first place . Were talking a couple of rules. The most recent was passed a couple of weeks ago, and it could, local Election Boards voting against certifying Election Results which some fear could cause confusion, chaos, disruption, or delays. The language is kind of bag which is where a lot of the concern comes from. , read a little part. If members identify an ever they deem cannot be corrected, the board shall determine a method to compute the votes justly. Language thats pretty vague and could be interpreted in a lot of different ways, election day and the days that follow. I raised my eyebrows when you started reading it because it sounds extremely vague. The board is made up of three republicans, three of which whom trump raises his quote on quote pit bulls . Now you have the Governors Office, Governor Kemp, and hes trying to figure out if you can remove these individuals. First of all, do you have any inkling, reporting on if Governor Kemp has gotten an answer if you can remove these individuals . What does it say that Governor Kemp is looking to take action against them . Democrats say georgia code is clear and i want to be clear too that its not about Governor Kemp removing the individuals. State Administrative Court who would hold a hearing and decide whether these Ethics Complaints should move forward and Board Members should be removed. Right now, the Governors Office is awaiting word from The Ag Office In the ag office told us they would have comment at some point soon and we are waiting to hear back from the. You make an important point about the makeup of this board. It has been republican majority for quite a while now. What has changed is some of the more mainstream members, republican lawyers, who applied the law, they have been replaced by more activist leading members who have come into elections motivated by the soft claims about fraud since the 2020 election. Lets be clear. At least two of the three republicans on this board, they do not believe that the Election Results of 2020 were fair and accurate. And when you cover these hearings which can last all day, 10, 11 hours, you hear many of these complaints about Election Integrity and the 2020 election and election since not only from members of the board from the folks who are sponsoring the proposed rule changes and from dozens and dozens of people who come to participate in Public Comment and raise countless Conspiracy Theories that have persisted since the 2020 election. Georgia is obviously a state to watch this election season. In 2020, biden won the state by a little under 12,000 votes. Now, Vice President Kamala Harris enter running mate tim walz, they will kickoff a bus tour in South Georgia later this week. Has significant is this, particularly the South Georgia. Not suburban atlanta. When i saw the schedule announcement, struck me because for the last several years i spent time reporting on rural black voters outside Metro Atlanta. Went democrats come here they spend a lot of time in Metro Atlanta but when the race is so close, you need voters in any pocket where they may live. Georges significant populations of black voters is a the metro, smaller cities like savannah and macon and albany but in Rule Communities also where folks might not think of a place for potential democratic voters and thats where the Harris Walz Campaign is looking to turn out these voters, even if its just dozens or hundreds, that can make a difference, election day in a state like georgia. One could argue its a turnout election. We appreciate your time. Thank you so much. When we come back, israel and hezbollah, they traded rocket and missile strikes over the weekend. Israel and hezbollah are claiming victory after exchanging some of their heaviest crossborder air attacks in months. Despite the escalation, the Washington Post reports, quote, the narrow actions were a source of palpable relief across the middle east. Matt bradley tells us why. Drew a day after his relaunch what are called the Preemptive Strike against the hezbollah militant group, and hezbollah launched a predawn volley of missiles hundreds of Military Installations across israel. For now, the crisis appears to have been averted. Both hezbollah and israel declared victory while israeli authorities reported no civilian casualties and only minimal damage. They didnt strike particularly hard. Do you think this was a face saving climbdown by hezbollah . Part of this attack was our selfdefense attack in the morning before their attack. Reporter Benjamin Netanyahu pledged whoever harms us, we harm hannay warrant that the attacks are not the end of the story but american secretary of defense lloyd austin order two Aircraft Carrier strike group to remain in the middle east. Tensions had been mounting since last month when israel assassinated a senior hezbollah commander near beirut sparking fears of regionwide war that could take in the united states. Our hope is events of last night do not spill out into an escalation that leads to regional war. Reporter it comes as siren sounded in tel aviv after hamas targeted the city. The racket didnt result in deaths or serious injuries. The middle east is breathing a sigh of relief but a lasting peace will depend of peace talks that have so far seen little success. Michael, Affairs Analyst joins me now. Michael, both israel and hezbollah are claiming their operations were a success and what your read on this . Its good to be with you. My thing this is a fortat thing. I dont think weve seen the end of this, trading of missiles and rockets. Leaders from both sides have said as much. When you are looking at hezbollah and the iranian leaders, they are in a tough spot because after the double assassination, they have to establish a sense of deterrence by showing their strength to israel and showing strength to their own people that they will not take this lightly. The israeli assassination in iran was something that showed weakness, vulnerability and thus to run defenses, huge humiliation to them. They will have to strike back but for the moment, what seems to be working, giving pause, as mentioned, the military presence in the region and maybe behind the scenes diplomacy that we cant see from where we are. Your point about iran is right. Hezbollah if you look at recent reports, the event said after their latest attacks said essentially, we are done here. Iran has not said anything. Do you think we will see any retaliation from them in the coming days or weeks . Or will we be waiting longer for their response . Yeah, i think we will but lets remind everyone that the former form of retaliation can come in many ways. Having been based in ukraine, we know that Cyber Attacks and things like that that can happen. We need to remind people that iran poses not only a threat to israel in the region and to the wider world. Yesterday, they sent 100 drones this way by russia and more in the past few hours. Its a threat that needs to be taken care of not only because of what theyre doing in the region but also when the wire geopolitical sense. You made the point about the diplomacy and as we speak, israeli delegation is in cairo for continuing ceasefire talks. This is despite being on the brink of an allout war yesterday. All the sites continue to be optimistic but cautious. Where do things stand now in these negotiations . I dont think its looking good at all. When you look add Benjamin Netanyahu, is fighting for his political life and needs to look to life tough. He has pledged to destroy hamas completely. Hes in no position to give pause to whats going on in gaza because the fear is, a chance for hamas to rebuild. From hamas side, the new leader there whos been in hiding, one of the most wanted man in the planet needs to show strength as well to his followers. The sad thing is there is nothing, nothing to indicateoin their tunnels. More than 40,000 dead including 14,000 children. Polio. Massive malnutrition and things are bad. We can put the blame on them, but this is turning into a huge humanitarian disaster. Both sides will want to tread carefully to win the most points, but i dont see any Meeting Point anytime soon. Michael, i fear your assessment is absolutely correct. Thank you very much for your time. When we come back. The small hit that scored a big win. We will inject a little hope.
