is an important issue that both nominees have discussed a lot, and struggled to do during their respective president sis. this election is also in a very big way a choice about capitalism the stock market is surging, especially powered by big tech right now, this week. but people are rightfully asking where are the profits going? this is an issue that sometimes does favor democrats when it comes to fairness, and making megamillionaires pay their share, but it also can lean towards donald trump, including voters who say right now, whether you believe it or more. more voters think that donald trump can control prices better than the current administration. this has brewing in our politics for a long time. >> we're lowering taxes, which the republicans love. >> i wouldn't be running unless i was really rich. >> no billionaire should pay a lower tax rate than a schoolteacher or firefighters. >> many large corporations, start paying their fair share. >> i guarantee you built that fortune for workers that all of us in part helped to pay to educate. >> so that more people. >> corporations are people, my friends. >> corporations are people, my friend. that last line, legally is true. in our system. not all countries do this, but courts give corporations some of the rights and benefits of actual people. so mitt romney was referring to a rule, a real thing, but that little moment right there, it became a gaff, as you might remember, so many people oppose though pro-corporate rules and bias in our system, which can value wealth, companies, the engines of capitalism, as they put it, above people, labor, families sometimes about life itself. romney's gaff, that could be in tuesday for donald trump, but on this one, he openly talks up the 1% over the rest of the people, meaning the 1% over a ton of other people who might be conservative or republican or maga when it comes to their politics, not pocket books. it's a point he made in a private roundtable, talking to ceo like tim cook and jamie dimon. the ceo on thes of the top companies make many, many more millions a year than anybody else because of those financial loopholes, drawn by congress, and some history by have been bipartisan, that's the back drop for trump vowing policies to hell billionaires above others, but also that is kind of an exchange of goods and services, right? a the lot of those people, how they criticized trump. thee get something tangible for supporting him. that is where romney ended up sounding out of touch, but trump knows, if nothing else, pr better than a lot of politicians. i want to mention this tonight, in addition to the report on the actual facts and the data in inequality, that he tries to make the point-'s above these ceos. then, with a little dash of "the apprentice quest and a banana republic, he says if they do not back his campaign, he should be fired. we know that word. think about it. that kind of bluster is not the top ten of -- it actually looks like he works for them, not the other way around, and this is a telling moment, days after the 2016 election, when trump went to a fancy restaurant, with wealthy clientele and said this. >> thank you. you'll get your taxes, don't worry. >> don't worry, if you're in the right bracket, if you're one of the richest americans. i want to do a bit of data, but not too much. when you talk about what someone in the middle of all of this is doing, with half the country, mean adincome for one person would be around $48,000 a year. the top 20%, they're making over a quarter million a year. and then it goes up from there. now, remember, when you go up to the 1%, by definition you're talking about a small group of people. the president is supposed to reflect all the people. that's what the administration is supposed to do, but when it came to priorities, even trump said in his view mattered to all the people, building a wall, infrastructure deals, he didn't get those things done, but i bet you know where i'm going with this. when it came to the tax cuts for the rich, those were a priority. he got those done. they have ceremonies in congress cutting at that income bracket above 400k, way above the 48k. the cuts expire next year. biden and democrats want to route those gains back to what comes out to the other 98%. they want to end the trump tax cuts. he says if he wins, he'll extend them, make it last longer. why does this matter? i want to be clear. taxes can have all of this sort of partisanship and beity. if you follow politics, they're talking about taxes as long as you can remember. what are taxes? they are fundamentally one way that the government regulates capitalism. so tax breaks for veterans, home ownership, is valuing something over that letting it go runaway capitalism. most homeowners like the home ownership tax benefit, the mortgage tax benefits. there's also pretty much a consensus, i would say overall, that society does have a positive interest in supporting the stability of home ownership. that's a place where the government, as i'm saying, through the tax policy says supporting home ownership, long-term living situations, families not having to worry about moving because of variable rates, rents, locking that in is a good thing. can you debate it, but i would say there's a wide consensus for that, and that's an example of a tax cut for something the government could support. so a government may put higher taxes on dangerous products, or a sector that tends to project risk on someone else. aren't knows companies can be profitable and be dangerous, meaning what it's doing in the marketplace is being rewarded, what it's doing in society might need more control, more regulation. tobacco companies would be a classic example, or big tech companies, which we're going to discuss a little later. corporate profits are exploding. you can see the trump tax cuts are on here, and there's a little different in the covid area of 2020, but after all of that, it continue to say go high. in the help the wealthy more than anyone else. and the stock part, many executives are getting double rewards. they get high pay, and then sometimes they get stock ben fits that they count as pay, which lets them duck the taxes that air own employees who make less have to pay. ceo pay is going gang busters lately, jumping over 10% recently. triple what regular workers saw fully eaten up by inflation. i showed you those earlier numbers for a belowee make 48k, an average ceo making 29 million. this isn't some unavoidable outcome. data shows how republican tax policy also inflates that picture. now, none of this is to say that companies shouldn't be rewarded for their success, right? companies create jobs, they create youthful products, they create wealth. so, when they pay back, as you see there, their cos for that, sometimes it might be perfectly fine, and might be what the market supports. but, other companies are rewarding their leaders even among failure, injury or death. take boeing, which i'm sure you're familiar withome of the problems. they have these safety and quality control failures, pieces of their planes falling off mid flight. fatal crashes until investigation, 346 people dies in two of those crashes, and employees who said, when it came to safety, they reportedly feared facing retaliation or being fired if they tried to enhance safety concerns or do things that employees thought might help save future lives. all of that was punished a bit. they're not going bankrupt, but they had a $350 million loss last quarter alone, but let's check how the market is dealing with the ceo. again, this is a question of where the government may or may not want to be involved. when i show you how boeing is paying their ceo, that's oppose by many, many americans, not just people fixated on critiquing capitalism. now, as i mentioned, republicans on policy have pushed harder to help those executives, so their policies may not match the rhetoric, but even the rhetoric is actually revealing. it shows that in public, more republicans, especially newer members of the party on the hill, they want to be seen as fighting against this kind of runaway capitalism. they want to show it's allegedly tough on at least something corporate leader. >> 32.8 million, does that sound right? >> yes. >> a 45% increase over last year, does that sound right? >> yes, it does. >> what is it you getting paid to exactly. >> i get paid to run the boeing company. >> what would you expect to do? >> i don't know. >> would you recommend she take out a credit card and run a deficit? >> i don't know. i would have to think about it. >> would you recommend she overdraft at your bank and be charged overdraft fees. >> i don't know. i would have to think about it. mr. dimon, you know how to spent $31 million in salary, but can't figure out how to make up for a $67 a month shortfall. >> what you have there are two sides of the spectrum, right? economically. the overpaid boeing ceo, what do you get paid to do if you don't run boeing well. >> and the overspade jpmorgan ceo talking about how he can't come up with solutions for someone who might be a potential client with a shortfall. i can show you a lot more clips, but both parties are dealing with this welt and equality. when you go to the top 1% of americans, they hold a much larger share of wealth as compared to everyone else, than even in just the last few decades. if you ran it back even further, even in our lifetime, you're seeing a greater consolidation, top 1% holding over 40 trillion in wealth, increasing 49%. what i mentioned what society does or doesn't do, the tax cut to the uber wealthy are fortified, and you could argue distorting that huge advantage you see all the way up to 2024 where we are now. there are some executives who, against this back drop have talked more about paying their fair share. there are some billionaires who publicly endorse what biden and democrats are saying would better correct this, including buffett. there are billionaires who agreed to give away the vast majority of their wealth, leon cooperman, bill gates, warren buffett, and we also raised this view that's out there, raising fromsh to people like him. this is from a new york rapper joe write badass. just had to pay like 60 stacks in taxes. why they take a piece of my assets. does bill gates have the same fees? please, i need the same answers. is it accurate? do some people avoid their fair share? >> you know, i paid over $10 billion in taxes. i think you could have a progressive tax system where people in my position would have paid more. obviously you can go to an extreme where you burden the incentives, but the u.s. is short of that. you can see some thoughts about making u.s. taxes more progressive. >> more progress tariff, that's one of the richest people in the world, also powered by tech, which i mentioned, which is powering a lot of the surge in the markets this week. he did fork out $10 billion in taxes. most billionaires aren't signing a giving pledge, not giving it away. a lot of them don't come and discuss any of this in public. they don't want to be targeted, or don't care to, or obviously have freedom. they don't have to answer questions or be transparent about this. then you have billionaires who spoke up and said when trump did -- they were leaving him, and a lot are retracting what they said. whether they believed it at the time or not for one apparently simple reason, it ain't enough, and they think they need more, and they've been very clear about which candidate is on their side, the billionaires side. we're trying to deal with the facts, quote directly from people, not just villainizing people this is one of those stories that could be the stop story for how it affects your life, year family's life in this coming election every single night, just like poverty could be. we don't covers it that way every time, but we're covering it every night, presidential campaigns david plouffe, and vla did shakir, we're back in 90 seconds. d shakir, we're back in0 seconds. bent finger appointment in 30 minutes. you got this. one - remember, i don't want surgery for my dupuytren's contracture. two - i don't want to wait for my contracture to get worse. three - i want a treatment with minimal downtime. four - i want a nonsurgical treatment. good boy. and five... and if nonsurgical treatment isn't offered? >> well, i agree very much with that. i think if you look at the polling, the within thing that's consistent is people believe, even those that say that they believe the economy is weak, that joe biden cares about people. that's really the economic debate the biden campaign needs to have. it's less about the overall statistics, but when push comes to shove, joe biden will continue to fight for people who are nurses, tradesmen and women, and donald trump will take care of the wealthy. he also will be focused on revenge and retribution. his economic policies are bad. he was to reward the wealthy, but also will be focused on rounding -- i will say this story about the billionaires coming home, it's the swampiest story you can imagine. then, when the carrot got strong enough, the billions got large enough, that they would overlook that, and the people who will pay for that are working people, retires and students. back in '12 when we won reelection for obama, that's what we paid, which is the person you can trust on understand the economy through the eyes of working people in many railroadses donald trump is offering great material to do that. >> hmm. all of that is interesting from both of you. david, you mentioned that, you know, we've talked to billionaires on this program, if you went to journalism school and looked this up 50, 75 years ago, it wasn't the same thing you would took cuss on, but the world has changed. i think the public knows this, these are people exerting extraordinary power. the founders talked about concentrated power, worrying about staying federal government. the founders would be aghast at some of the international floating, you know, megacompany types exerting power over multiple countries, doing it in the dark, without transparency, leon cooperman is giving most of his money back, but also has an issue with your former boss. let's take a look. >> president obama many years ago, you're depreciating the american dream, you're telling 99% they're being screwed by the 1%. tell the 99% with luck and hard work, they'll become the 1%. >> everyone wants to be rich, and the democrats are what you might have referred to, is telling people they can't get a leg up, they can't become rich other megarich. what is the right response to your view on that? is the silicon valley argument in your view true that things are basically fine, they already care, and they have already given clear easy to use controls and tools? >> i think we have to look at the data there. the data tells us things are not fine. it tells us that when adolescents are using three hours or more of social media a day, they face double the risk of anxiety and depression symptoms, and by the way, the average amount of use as of last summer was 4.8 hours a day. surveys of adolescents themselves are telling us, they are telling us that nearly half of them feel worse about their body image as a result of using social media. this to me is fundamentally a problem. and the data and the stories are all telling us that kids are struggling. we have to step up and respond. that's our moral duty as a society. i know it's complicated. i know this is a challenging year. but as a father, if my child was in danger, i would pull out the stops to do everything to protect my child. i would do what any other parent would do. as a country, when our kids are telling us they're struggling, when we're in the middle of a youth mental health crisis, we should pull out the stops too to protect our kids. that's what i'm asking congress to do. >> interesting and notable. this is an issue we have been looking at and you have at least one concrete idea there. dr. murthy, thanks for being here. >> thanks so much. great to be with you today. >> appreciate it. “the darkness of bipolar depression made me feel like i was losing interest in the things i love. then i found a chance to let in the lyte.” discover caplyta. unlike some medicines that only treat bipolar i, caplyta is proven to deliver significant symptom relief from both bipolar i & ii depression. and in clinical trials, movement disorders and weight gain were not common. caplyta can cause serious side effects. call your doctor about sudden mood changes, behaviors, or suicidal thoughts right away. anti-depressants may increase these risks in young adults. elderly dementia patients have increased risk of death or stroke. caplyta is not approved for dementia-related psychosis. report fever, confusion, or stiff muscles, which may be life threatening, or uncontrolled muscle movements which may be permanent. common side effects include sleepiness, dizziness, nausea, and dry mouth. these aren't all the side effects. in the darkness of bipolar i & ii depression, caplyta can help you let in the lyte. ask your doctor about caplyta. find savings and support at caplyta.com. if you spit blood when you brush, it could be the start of a domino effect. new parodontax active gum repair breath freshener. clinically proven to help reverse the four signs of early gum disease. a new toothpaste from parodontax, the gum experts. power e*trade's easy-to-use tools, like dynamic charting and risk-reward analysis, help make trading feel effortless. and its customizable scans with social sentiment help you find and unlock opportunities in the market. e*trade from morgan stanley with powerful, easy-to-use tools, power e*trade makes complex trading easier. react to fast-moving markets with dynamic charting and a futures ladder that lets you place, flatten, or reverse orders so you won't miss an opportunity. e*trade from morgan stanley a slow network is no network for business. or reverse orders so you won't miss an opportunity. that's why more choose comcast business. and now we're introducing ultimate speed for business, our fastest plans yet. we're up to 12 times faster than verizon, at&t, and t-mobile. and existing customers could even get up to triple the speeds at no additional cost. from the company with 99.9% network reliability and advanced cyber security, it's ultimate speed for ultimate business. and it's all from comcast business. thanks for spending time with us here on a week night. if you're around this weekend, on saturdays, we do "the beat" weekend. we have highlights, special reports and things you might have missed. all special and wrapped up in one good hour. 4:00 p.m. eastern on saturdays. check it out, dvr it. that does it for us tonight.
