at his 70th birthday party to a hero's welcome mat the capitol steps away from where he incited an insurrection. congressional republicans have made urit clear. i'll discuss sc that with robert garcia and reacting to the supreme court's ruling on bum stocks. the move that made milwaukee famous. a new interview after donald trump reportedly calls the whole city of the republican national convention "horrible." and the next fight over reproductive rights. why the ruling on abortion th pills may not be the new final ruling. we have a lot to talk about. this is the saturday show. okay, this is for all of my shopaholics out there. what do you get the guy who's running to be the president again and just got convicted on 34 felony counts just a few weeks ago? when he has a birthday i'm not sure i have an answer, but it looks like trump.just what he wanted, endless praise and adulation from maga that he cannot live without the crowd included a host of super fans, like senator marco rubio and congressman byron donalds. this after the hero's welcome trump received when he met with republican lawmakers on capitol hill earlier this week literally returning to the scene of the crimes where the january 6th insurrection took place, and this was his first time since he was playing the role of instigator and chief. former congressman matt gaetz described the house gathering is "a pep rally for president trump." senate minority leader mitch mcconnell endorsed the session as, entirely positive, saying, it was a good meeting. as a lawyer, i can appreciate consistency, so it's nice to hear somebody like mitch mcconnell keep the same energy he had for donald trump immediately following january 6th. let's take a listen. >> there's no question. done. president trump is practically-- and morally-- responsible-- for provoking the events of the day . no question about it. this was an intensifying crescendo of conspiracy theories , orchestrated by outgoing president, who determined to either overturn the voters' decision, or else, torch institutions on the way out. >> i believe we need to hold the president accountable. i hold him accountable for the events that transpired for the attack on our capitol last wednesday.>> trump and i-- we have had a hell of attorney. all i can say is, count me out. enough is enough. >> sirs-- ma'am, sirs question mark? i beseech you to look at your own statements, as we know enough in fact was not enough. republicans are once again falling in line number trump is running for a second term, and the former president is using that to his advantage. his latest stunt, demanding the gop intervene in his legal perils. the reporting from politico reveals in the days after trump was convicted in his new york hush money case, he made an angry call to house speaker mike johnson, and dropped a truckload ofwhile telling the speaker, we have to overturn this. if you feel you are rusty on your seventh grade civics, worry no more. i'm here to tell you that is not the problem that's not how any of this works. someone might want to tell the indicted former president that congress does not in fact have the power to do what he is reportedly asking congress to do. we can start with the pesky detail that trump was convicted by a jury in the state of new york, not in the federal system. but, none of that seems to matter, not to trump, or his minions on capitol hill. speaker mike johnson has made clear that he will use his oversight powers to aid and abet trump in any way. the speaker even went as far to suggest that the supreme court should step in to help trump. now-- i don't mean to sound any alarms here, but this is really scary stuff, when the president of the united states, someone who has been in that seat, who wants to be in that seat again and the speaker of the house, don't seem to have a handle on how government actually functions. and with his political and legal fate on the line, trump now has the most loyal and powerful foot soldiers he has ever had to do his bidding. joining me now to discuss all of this is congressman robert garcia of california, member of the house oversight and homeland security committees. congressman garcia, so good to talk to you. i want to jump right into this. former congresswoman liz cheney blasted senator mcconnell for his meeting with trump on capitol hill saying "history will remember the shame of those" in the lens of history was allegiance to trump more important? coming in somewhat sarcastically, but where is the notion of consistency when it comes to how they view their fearless leader? >> i mean there is no consistency, it is all hypocrisy. it's shameful. i mean, donald trump is a con man, he is a conspiracy theory asked theorist, a trader, and it's all in his image. the fact he can come back to dc, create a spectacle in the same place where he essentially launched an attack on our government, on our institutions, and on our capitol, put lives and dangers, and lives were lost, it's really gross and shameful to cp mike johnson has become essentially the right-hand man for donald trump. he jumps as quickly as possible. they have all been to the knee, including mitch mcconnell, two donald trump, someone that should be nowhere near the presidency. so, we have an enormous amount of work to do between now and november to remind voters how dangerous not just donald trump is, but also the entire maga republican party. >> i'm so glad you brought that up. for a moment, we talk a lot about republicans, and that's fine, i want to talk about your party and its response. mike johnson, the speaker of the house, and he is essentially willing to do anything donald trump expects him to do. what is the plan for democrats and one of the least productive houses ever commit the least reductive legislative sessions we've had in congress in a very long time, what is the plan to get a policy move between now and november that democrats will be able to assail to the electorate other than pointing at republicans and saying it's their fault? >> the reality is republicans have the majority, so our ability to pass real legislation is impossible. we even had a bipartisan deal on immigration and the border that essentially donald trump killed, because he wanted to hurt joe biden. the entire mission of the republican party in congress is just to appease donald trump. what democrats are trying to do under the leadership of hakeem jeffries is to push back on every single bed piece of legislation the proposed, call out every single life, every single distortion, fight like hell in our communities, which we are doing, and call them out on their bs every single day. and, democrats have to be more aggressive. i am a freshman member, it's my first term, but as a freshman, i am proud that our incoming class understands that we are in a crisis for our democracy, and that means we have got to bring the fire, every single day, and call out every single light. we should not allow folks, like marjorie taylor greene, and lauren boebert, and matt gaetz to get what they want. >> donald trump is speaking in detroit being put on by term. actually, and marjorie taylor greene gave a speech, and let's listen for a moment to what she had to save a january 6th. >> you don't feel good about the election? there's nothing wrong with protesting it, and there was nothing wrong with protesting the election on january 6th, and any democrat, that's right- - and any democrat, any person from the mainstream media, and anyone that wants to continue to shame us for january 6th, can go to hell. >> i would love your reaction to that. >> yeah, she-- >> particularly the notion of making it a partisan issue around challenging the notion of our free and fair elections. >> yeah, first, she's an insane lunatic, let's be clear. she should not be in congress, number-one. i was one of two democrats that actually had to join her as observers, we went to the jail in dc to meet with the insurrectionist, the prisoners that were there at january 6th. it was disgusting to be there and watch marjorie taylor greene sit down, high-five these insurrectionist, give them hugs, shake there hands, pray for their safety, treating them like heroes is what she was doing along with about 10 other republicans, and i sat there and could not believe what i was seeing. and now that she calls and praises them as heroes, she calls them hostages, it's incredibly damaging to our democracy. and everyone watching and seeing what's happening in congress, as she, mike johnson, and donald trump, continue to destroy everything we know about our country. and she has no business to be in congress. she has no business being on committees. she's honestly i disgusting, she's a disgusting person. >> in terms of the recent ruling this week about gun bump stocks from the supreme court, what art democrats going to do, if anything, about it? in many respects allusion to congress legislating around this if this is a big issue for them, what about legislation? >> the nra is in the pocket of donald trump, and the republicans are in the pocket of the nra and donald trump. so there is one thing democrats and the whole country can do to take on gun violence in this country, and that is to reelect joe biden and to ensure we flip the house. there are real commonsense gun safety reforms we can enact in this country that will save lives, but that is not going to happen if we do not reelect joe biden, and if somehow donald trump is able to appoint more justices to the supreme court or across the country, we are in emergency right now across this country. we have to reelect joe biden. it's the most important thing we can do, and we will enact real gun reforms across this country. >> california's congressman robert garcia, thank you so much for joining the saturday show. coming up, the mayor of milwaukee's new response after donald trump called his city horrible. plus, the fight for reproductive freedom at the supreme court and on capitol hill. wife there may be bigger battles ahead. i'm carl charles coleman junior . you are watching the saturday show. day show. >> i spent a long time in political mythology, johnson knew it was happening with the so-called southern strategy. the way we measure official poverty i say in the book is not only a lie, it is a lie in how it marginalizes. most of the time we talk about poverty in the media or anywhere else, you see a black woman on welfare, when 26 million black people are poor or low-wage, which is 56%. for white people, about 30%. and the fact is that's 40 million more than black people. whenever you put poverty as a black issue you end up demeaning black people, which is racist, but you also dismiss tens of millions of white people who are in the same boat. the majority of which are white women. what dr. king said, and others have said, the greatest fear of the oligarchs in this country want to be greedy and use race to hold onto that greed. masses of poor white people could come together, vote and shift the architecture of the country. poor and low-wage people are in fact the greatest swing vote, potential swing vote, in this country. >> i'm glad you brought up dr. king. both he and others like fred hampton for example, understood that uniting people not along necessarily race but class and economics was the key to progression, but my question to you is, do you think by highlighting white poverty this potentially forms a pathway for unity in a way that can begin to dismantle those systems that keep people in america impoverished? >> yeah, what we do in the book is expand race, lift it up, show how the racial is asian of poverty is used against both. what we are saying to america is we have 55 million people in this country who make less than a living wage. we have not raised the minimum wage since 2009. that hurts all people, in the south most of the southern states did not expand medicaid, but the majority in those southern states that would benefit from medicare expanding is are white. we have to attack it in this moment. 40% of the electorate in battleground states, that's why june 29th, the poor people's campaign led by and third 30 organizations that were present over 60 million, we are calling for a mass poor people's assembly and march on washington to put the face of poverty and low wages before the nation. also we have a plan to reach 15 million poor voters, who tend to vote progressive. nobody talks to them, the politicians don't talk to them, the debates don't talk about poverty and low wages. we must stop and deal with an american crisis. 295,000 people die every year from poverty and low wages. this is not an anomaly, it's a serious issue. >> bishop, one thing you talk about that i love is this notion of moral fusion. you've talked a lot about the voting strength of this demographic in america. from a moral fusion place, identify what is the issue? how does that translate for voters going to the polls? what does that look like when people are going to cast their vote this fall? >> part of what moral fusion says is whether you look at the color someone has or how many times they have assaulted somebody, or even their age, you look at their policies, and you take your deepest moral convictions of the constitution establishing justice, providing for the common defense of all people, religion, and put on top of these policies and say, does this policy establish justice? if it does i support the person who supports it. if it doesn't, i won't. does it support general welfare for all? lastly, what you recognize, the same people against a woman's right to choose are against living wages and healthcare. if they are cynical enough to be together they ought to be common enough to get together. >> bishop william barber, we appreciate your time. we will be right back. ht back. ?
