Speaker all the way back to boehner. Is that about him or the exhaustion . Thats something well learn about tonight, but the Nomination Speech Backing him and the way the democrats responded tore into the politics that hangs all over there. The federal government has been illegally weaponized again we the people. House republicans have put their names behind someone called the most important architect of the Electoral College objections. Mike johnson has received 220 votes. I want to thank Leader Jeffries. I do look forward to working with you on behalf of the american people. Thats some of how it played out today. If youre looking at your screen going, who is mike johnson . Well, youre probably like a lot of americans. Thats not a criticism of him. It might have been an attribute, but he is little known. He is a more Junior Member than you usually see take on such a big position in government, and certainly in house leadership, where people like scalise were trying to come up through leadership experience. He was elected in 2016, not one of the big public internet stars. Hes run the committee sorted associated with policies, but he does right to the right of his party. He also wanted to make it illegal for people who love each other, but are of the same gender to get married. He is now third in line to the presidency, the most important republican in the house. Now, hes staunchly and repeatedly supported trump, no matter what. He even voted against certifying the lawful Election Results. He was part of that group. You probably heard a bit about that today. We might hear more about it. He also led a tex lawsuit that tried to overturn the Election Results in key states. New york times put it like this, quote representative mike johnson is the most important architect of the Electoral College obligations. He has now also talked up the idea that republicans could seize on Impeachment Process against biden, something we have seen the party go back and forth on. Theres a statement on that. You see that from earlier this year. And you should keep in weve him on this program to discuss these issues. When he was defending trump, he sounded different. The ultimate concern is and this is what the ultimate answer is as well the founders warned us against a singleparty impeachment. Thats what were seeing right flow. He concern was a singleparty impeachment impeachment. We hearty from him then and of course would welcome him back a speaker on this program. Speaker johnsons record as a maga conservative may be a surprise to some americans who are, of course, learning about him, because he hasnt been in the spotlight. Hakeem jeffries was with johnson, you can see them there in this historic moment. I can tell you these two will have to Work Together and figure it out. They serve together on the judicial committee, and jeffries today now spoke about this now new speaker, in contrast to johnsons lowkey demeanor in comparison to his report. We did an interview today at the center for American Progress ideas conference. Here is what democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries told me. Were airing this for the first time. Mike johnson has a very pleasant demeanor, but his Voting Record is as extreme as the most extreme members of their conference. Someone who, like Kevin Mccarthy, like steve scalise, like jim jordan s. Voted to overturn the 2020 election. A track record to undermine Social Security and medicare, probably more so than any other members of the House Republican conference, wants to criminalize Abortion Care and impose a nationwide ban. It sort of sounds like Congressman Johnson is just a less stylistically annoying jim jordan . One could say that. One could stay that. Could is not the same as representative jeffries saying it himself. He knows he has to work with this new speaker. We also try to show full context. To be clear today, Hakeem Jeffries also credited now Speaker Johnson for talking to democrats and progressives, which demeanor is part of that. In style and words hes not jim jordan if he might in voting. I also want to show you briefly i did ask, how could you not i asked congressman if the democrats do win back conference, Would Jeffries take as long or an many votes to become speaker . Johnson does have a Working Relationship with members. Hes been communicative with members on our side of the aisle. If democrats win back power, can you vow you would become speaker more quickly than this . My mother certainly hopes so. There you have it, a modest or shoutout to mrs. Jeffries, not trying to crow too much. Congress tonight will now be led by this new speaker. As the last speaker learned, Kevin Mccarthy, in a thin margin, a lot of people have impacted, could be the matt gaetzs of the world, or Hakeem Jeffries of the world that control so many votes. To get into it were enjoy with our guest from the washington post. Its a sense of relief. You saw the Standing Ovation when they finally got a speaker. Half of them are im pleased with this choice. Its been three weeks when Speaker Johnson got up there in front of the them all, he said, i want to send a message to the world. Were doing okay, we got this, were stable. So theres a sense of real relief that they have gotten this far, but he still has the same problem. They have not changed the rules, so one member could stand up and say they want it called for vacating the chair. He may find himself in tricky positions. Do we know where he stands with the socalled rebels and matt gaetzes of the world . New york times is calms him an architect of that plan to try to nullify the results of states elections back during the president ial rails a year ago. He has long been seen as someone who, you know, is a trump supporter, a trump loyalist. Donald trump praised him today. Donald trump essentially sank the last guy yesterday. Yeah, lets look at that. Kevin mccarthy was pretending to be maga people. Thats how the maga people felt and thats how the evidence would show, on private calls, he would say this is irredeemable, and then would pretend to be maga. I think Leader Jeffries said it well, hes moderate in his approach, but he was encouraging donald trump to take every legal option, and trying to stop the certification. He also laid out clearly where he stands on issues. Hell have less of a problem with the conservative flank, but the question is some of the more moderate republicans in districts that joe biden won, will he raise concerns . The speaker has a lot of power to decide the agenda. Hell have big tests coming up, everything from keeping the government open to figuring out this question of whether or not there should be funding for israel and ukraine. He stood up against funding in ukraine in the past. Hes got to be the one bringing things to the floor and negotiating deals. Donald trump, it turns out, couldnt get somebody over the finish line. His support for jim jordan couldnt get him the speakership. Its a fascinating thing and also speaks to timing. Mike johnson if he threw his name in the ring, look theres some dangers. The republicans need a big fundraiser, and he doesnt have that proven track record. Just having the support of donald trump doesnt necessarily mean youll bring it as speaker. Which is another thing that mccarthy had a lead on. Libby casey, thanks for kicking us off tonight. I appreciate it. Thank you. Coming up, who will be the next domino to fall . Cassie hutchinson was just talking about mark meadows in the sauce. Is he cooperating . First, we have a very special discussion about why we all have to care about what comes next. New pronamel active shield actively shields the enamel to defend against erosion and cavities. I think that this product is a gamechanger for my patients it really works. Toe speakers in one year, you dont always see that. The house finally has Speaker Johnson winning the gavel. Many people see the turmoil ors process, whatever you want to call it, all began with one congressman. Matt gaetz, along with a couple socalled rebels, calling for the noconfidence vote. Celebrating a victory that almost didnt happen. Look at that, that means Somebody Just held somebody back. Kevin mccarthy going head to head with Congressman Matt Gaetz after the House Speaker worked with democrats to avert a government shutdown. Matt gaetz promising he will move this week to removie House SpeakerKevin Mccarthy. Its astonishing to hear any colleague give Kevin Mccarthy credit. Speaker mccarthy was ousted. Buckle up for a fight. Hes said it, hes here, my live guest. I know it was a busy day. Thanks for being here. Women to you to washington. Here i am. What does todays speaker vote mean. Did you cut any side deals like last name . No side deals. This means. Conference is united really for the first time. This congress, we are united behind a man of deep faith, who obeys almighty god, and i was proud to support him. Hes not someone that comes from any particular faction i dont know about that. The strong relationships, and everyone feels listened to with mike johnson. He has a great tone, great leadership still stack, and im going to do everything i can to make him successful. One of the things you got changed was to make it easier to remove a speaker in real time, and you got that accomplished. Were told that that continues. Will you be as eager to use that rule to topple this speaker as mccarthy, or was this one and done . Weapon democrats and republicans raising the threshold beyond just one member. I met with Speaker Johnson about that and those desires. Heres what i offered. Rho qana, a democrat, and i have worked on Bipartisan Anticorruption Rule changes for the house that wouldnt allow members of congress to become lobbyists or foreign agents, that wouldnt allow donations from Political Action committees, and stop members of congress to stop trading individual stocks. If we cant approach that with great vigor, i might be willing to continue. So you should raise the threshold, which makes it harder to toss somebody. Do you have any idea that mike johnson is worried . I said one and done. If you keep doing this, that complicates a lot of more governing agenda. This was something that we had to do, because Kevin Mccarthy had lied to us. The one thing it was a mccarthy thing for you . You denilely. If he had maintained his commitments, released the january 6th tapes, tapes, if he called for the votes on balanced budget and term limits, he would likely still be speaker the day. It wasnt the man so much, as his unwillingness to keep it real. We keep it real, and i appreciate you coming on. Sometimes it seems like the men, because you seem to have a beef with him and him with you. Thats not true. I want to push back on that. I can cite specific things that Kevin Mccarthy agreed to do. The reason i brought this motion to vacate. Any Piano Constituents said you promised a term limits vote, a balanced budget. Hes not doing these things, so it really was accountability for policy and procedure failures more than any beef. We have informed viewers, so they can adjust and assess what youre saying based on what they saw. We saw that, but i want to get you on, one of the things you all said was bad was that you want Kevin Mccarthy was working with democrats or doing so in the wrong way. Let me show you. Take a look. Working with the democrats is a Yellow Brick Road thats been paved by speaker mccarthy. The speaker fought through 15 votes in january to become speaker, but was only willing to filed through one failed c. R. Before surrendering to the democrats. The only time we lost the conservative agenda was when Kevin Mccarthy went behind the republican conference and was able to retain a majority of democrat votes. You and others said that, but this is the question ive been dying to ask. Look at this chart, Congresman Gaetz you partnered with over 200 democrats to oust mccarthy. There are conservatives that raised the question, why is it okay when you do it to actually shut down basically a Functioning House for a few weeks . We shut down for 22 days. Keep in mind every year, Congress Takes a sixweek vacation. We took about half of time of the normal vacation, and i think it was you could have done it without working with democrats, right . Yeah. By the way, i work with democrats regularly, whether its on privacy rights, on fisa issues, whether its on Criminal Justice but i showed that about the Yellow Brick Road. Thats a tight clip. Ill gill you the mic back. Sure. Our views see coverage of you. Explain to you in logical english why its bad when he does it, and okay when you do it. I had to work with democrats to remove mccarthy, because he worked with democrats to violate the agreements had he had made with us. Had democrats or mccarthy not worked with democrats on the Debt Limit Deal in violation of the guardrails, certainly i wouldnt have work with democrats to remove him. I think were being reductive. Its okay to work with democrats in a divided government. Its actually necessary and required if you want to do the essential functions. What is not okay is for Kevin Mccarthy to blow through the guardrails we set. For example, we said he was authorized to negotiate a Debt Limit Deal to a certain date or certain dollar amount, whichever came first. He then blew through the guardrails to just suspend the debt limit entirely until january 2025. We have already accruesed 2 trillion as a consequence of that. Im running out on time here, but finally, big picture, take it all together, did matt gaetz and the rebels win and now you dont have to vacate or play those strategy anymore, or are the rebels still out here and should johnson be just as worried over his shoulder as mccarthy. Its the former. Were here to make him as success of a speaker as he possibly can be. Hes sat next to me for such years on the judiciary committee. We very aligned perspectives. This is our guy. This isnt a guy were going to chase around with a motion to vacate. Were going to do everything we can to pour into and make successful. I want to mention for the viewers, if your guy, which is different from how we started which you want hes everybodys guy. Look, he can be our guy and the guy for other folks. Everybody voted for him, but i think people can be enthusiastic for different reasons. Im very enthusiastic about him being an honest man, a true conservative. I think others that may not hold his perspective on the questions really likes his style. I appreciate you coming on the beat tonight. Thanks for having me. We turn now, we have an Obama Campaign veteran, but pete aguilar, also discuss Speaker Johnson. This has been about one thing. This has been about who can appease donald trump. House democrats believe when members of this body voted to reject the results of the 2020 election. They forgetted their ability to lead this chamber. We heard from matt gaetz. We turn to chai komamduri. Who could disagree with that . This was about a personal grudge that matt gaetz had with Kevin Mccarthy. He decided to take him out. He also decided to tame him out, i believe, and the facts bear it out, at the behest of donald trump. Donald trump wants a government shutdown. Thats what Kevin Mccarthys great sin was. He did not shut down the government. He created an atmosphere of chaos. That was what this was about. It was about a government shutdown. Interesting. Let me ask you this. When you see matt gaetz, who seems to happy with this outcome, does that suggest that maga, which faces some vulnerability on being perceived as being too extreme, has moved the speakership and thus the majority to the right . Absolutely. I wish i could sigh matt gaetz lost, maga lost, but no, they won and america has lost. He has put in a speaker that will do Donald Trumps bidding. Get ready. Well have a government shutdown. Were going to shun down aid to ukraine. Thats whats going to occur. Do not be fooled by the Halloween Costumes gaetzs reasonable guy, thats no not who he is. If i knew then what i know now, i would have declined to represent donald trump. I look back on this experience with deep remorse. Jenna ellis confessing, Pleading Guilty to a felony. She will now testify and cooperate with the prosecutors. Shes actually third lawyer within a week to confess to the election crimes. These are the dominos weve been telling you about. Instead, on the program recently, we played an excerpt of david kelly talking about the dominos, and we go to him live. In full disclosure, my former boss. Welcome back, david. We ran that clip, not because we love you, that might be a side point, but because you were right. How did you know more dominos would fall . Its a big deal. Youre shaking the trees a bit. It happens in every day, especially a days with this many defendants. It doesnt surprise me, and its not like anybody is reading a crystal ball, its just what happened, but in terms of my sense of caution. Im very excited about the fact that people are Pleading Guilty, taking responsibility, being held accountable. But a couple things worry me. One, more and more people that take a plea, the more this starts to look like a fire sale, where people arent serving jail. Two, where people are taking pleas, but theyre not al cuting, meaning taking responsibility, and describing the response for the rico enterprise, which would be important when it comes to time. The third thing is, you know, this thing about these people writing letters of apology to the people of georgia and so forth, but, i dont know about the credibility of it, about if shes still out there promoting election denialism. She wrote a letter that reportedly is quite short, a letter of apology, so you have to wonder, particularly given what they have said in the past, what they are saying now, how useful it will be in a prosecution . Yeah. When we showed that ellis read that letter emotionally, but the other ones you refer to have not been read into the record yet. Do you basically think, as this go forward, if a d. A. Gets a fourth or fifth domino, there could be required jail time, that this deal shouldnt be available to all . I dont know whether or not how to navigate around the first offender rule, but what i would like to see is taking more responsibility for some of the more important and more severe, greater gravity of the offense, such as rico. Number two, i would like to see a greater penalty. I dont think at the end of the day, if they dont end up doing jail time, thats okay, but a guarantee before think even testify is something i would like to see them avoid. I have about 40 seconds, but donald trump on the stand, a sketch of that, theirst time we believe hes taken the stand. This is a new york civil proceeding, where he was sanctioned for violating the gag order. What does that mean, and if he keeps violating it, what happens . I think its a good kick in the shins saying, the person running this courtroom is the guy in the robes. I think its a good pushback. He needs to get used to it. Hes got to know who runs that courtroom. This was a good reminder of that to him. If he keeps violating it, would a judge in a civil case really consider contempt . Everybody remembers my cousin vinny. Just one night in jail wakes somebody up. The jail is a possibility, is it a problem under these circumstances . No, i dont think. But the judge every time he openings his mouth, that fine can come up, and keep calling him to the stand and testify to it, humiliation is a about ig factor there. David, well put the painting back up, the final ten seconds what willer grade to you give the artist . I give it the first one. Its tough to get the orange glow there, but i think it was captured. There we have it. Youve been around the sketch artists. Some prosecutors are known to care about it. How am i doing . David kelly, thank you. His role has grown even more of a matter of intrigue since his aide, Cassidy Hutchinson gave that blockbuster testimony. We heard from her moments after this news broke. I had hoped for a long time that mark would step up and do the right thing, and what i define as the right thing, share what he nose with the department of justice and in fact with the country with what happened in the white house on january 6th. I know personally there was nobody in that white house during that period closer to donald trump than mark meadows. That period, all of them dealing with things in the last week have become convicted crimes in georgia. Meadows telling smiths team that he actually objected to donald trump, and that trump was dishonest with the public and there were times, according to this account, that meadows wanted to resign. You will notice, as is often the case with these things, its definitely giving a version thats positive. Trump, for his part, disputing all of this. Ive spoken to mark meadows many, many times over the years, and he strongly believed the election was rigged. Well, there you have that. Now, hutchinson was, of course, around the two of them people. When i interviewed her, we talked about that, and in her book she details how she was with mark all the time, but mark was with trump all time. She heard the infamous georgia call through the doorway. Thats a reason why mark meadows could get convicted ando to prison. Now, she witnessed, she says, she witnessed meadows admitting trump lost. Mark was sort of all over the board in some ways, you know. He would privately admit sometimes that the election that we had lost the election, or privately would admit that trump had said we lost the election, but mark was also a key players in bringing in characters like sydney powell, like jenna ellis, who we now have seen have pled guilty. He would at times acknowledge what i have read in the abc report. So thats very interesting, coming from a key witness in principal that she finds the abc news report credibility. Abc news has not fully confirmed it. On the other hand, both things could be true. President trump could have heard meadows agree with him. The United States house finally picked a new speaker today. The first order of business was hamas and The Middle East war. Speaker johnson said he would bring a resolution to the floor condemning hamas. The harder part may be to rally republican support for humanitarian aid into gaza and the rising death toll, where a third of all hospitals are defunct, according to the w. H. O. Israeli leaders reiterate they are preparing for some kind of invasion. The region approaching the threeweek mark since hamas attack. Wider Core Dilemmas that we hear ran breakthroughs, or religion, most of those are not even on the table for any of the sides right now. I want to bring back a special expert we have told you about, ambassador ross. He helped negotiate the oslo accord, served in the Clinton Administration there in keep meetings, sunday the state department under bush senior, and a Special Adviser on iran. Ambassador ross, thanks for being here. Good to be here. Thank you. What do you think is coming down the pike, a tactical standoff, with much more to come. I think the israelis have been delaying going in on the ground for a variety of reasons. Some relates to gathering intelligence, some of it is testing the defenses of the hamas. Some of it is obviously a response to the question asking about the questions of what is the nature of the strategy and how does it fit with the military objectives . Theres a combination of factors. I think they will go in at a certain point, but not a way that hamas expect. Part of the delays is keeping them offbalance. Eventually theyll have to control or occupy most of gaza, but i think theyre quite determined not to stay. That will affect also the way they go in, when you say may be even preemptive criticisms there. The Wider Regional Landscape is complex, it doesnt even get as much attention. Even in our shorthand, people talk about a conflict. Lobe an notice in the north, syria, and plus iran lurking in the background. Its a bit more complex than sometimes people realize. As soon as this attack occurred, and we mentioned this in our early coverage, that weekend, you said based on your extensive experience, one factor was hamas effort to try to stymie a saudi deal. The president is now alluding to that same point. I want to play that for you. Sure. Im convinced one of the reasons hamas attacked when they did i have no proof of it, but my instinct tells me is because of the progress we are making for reintegrate overall. We cant leave that work behind. One, explain that, and two, why now is President Biden raising that issue . I think the two keep points are hamas has always acted when it thought there was a potential for peace to make real progress. Here was a profound development if you had normalization between saudi arabia religious dimension of this. You have the custodian of the holy mosque, it reduces the religious element and hamas exploits the religious element. It doesnt act on the basis of religious principles. It uses religion as a vehicle for control and political power. To have that reduced as part of this conflict would obviously erode some of the appeal that hamas tries to depend on. You heard Something Else the president said. He talked about Regional Integration. Its not just the issue of saudi arabia and israel, although that would enhance Regional Integration, its basically creating a network of states that are prepared to make peace with israel and also look to shaping a very different middle east. You know, in the past, even to today, the Intraregional Trade within The Middle East is minuscule, and this is something that would begin to transform that. It also means these are society that is actually want to build resilient economies given the challenges of the 21st century, so the connection with israel and greater Regional Integration really offers quite a different future for The Middle East. Why does biden say this in public now, and if someones listening and says, okay, ambassador, if thats the case, why cant those parties come back to the table as a show of force, diplomatic force, peaceful force, if you will, the kind of force i know you prefer, against hamas . Because what we keep hearing is, oh, well, the terrain makes it impossible for the saudis now . Theres an atmosphere now that is difficult. When you see the kind of pictures you see coming out of gaza, it evokes great passion among a lot of the so called arab street. What president is saying in effect here is, were going to try to get back to that as soon as we can. What he is hearing, no doubt, from all arab leaders is israel needs to crush hamas because if hamas is seen as winning, that means the ideology of rejection gains leverage and appeal in the region. So we need israel to crush hamas, but we want israel to do it quickly and in a way that imposes very few casualties on palestinians. Well, those two objectives are pretty hard to reconcile. What you have is the president sort of saying, were going to keep our eye on the ball for when this is over. Finally, why wont egypt take some refugees from gaza. Theres a palestinian narrative, that many accept, this is israels problem to solve, its not their problem to solve. They dont want to see displacement as a solution, where you push Palestinians Into Neighboring states. Its a long standing position. From a humanitarian perspective, if there are children that could be safely held or returned, is that something that should be on the table or not because its too complicated . I would like to see it on the table. I would like to reassure the egyptians, its they have gazans coming into egypt, they will never leave. Its an understandable fear. I still i think is less than the broader narrative point i was making about the way youre going to resolve this and its not going to be on their back. I think its worth saying to them, all right, how about small numbers, you know, no one is talking about any significant numbers, and there are some real humanitarian cases. How about that . Right, and potentially safeguarding people who are innocent civilians there, especially the younger people in what could be of course a widen war. And now we turn to a fun update about one of our beat colleagues, this is dan mcdormand, an msnbc producer who launched this very show, and remains our Executive Producer to this day. Thats our control room where he is actually right now. And here is an even better picture of dan from this weeks new york times, from a new article about his debut novel and how getting published felt like winning the middleaged lottery. The article reports that dan gave up Writing Fiction back in his 20s but now he is publishing his first novel at age 47. That novel is West Heart Kill a 1970s murder mystery. In our reporting, we try to be objective and disinterested in all things, i can tell you tonight, full disclosure, im not disinterested in West Heart Kill, we know its author, having been a great writer and creative thinker, in the trenches for many big stories. My personal opinion, well, ill give it to you, i think its worth buying and reading West Heart Kill by dan mcdormand, but if you want the views of literary figures who dont work with dan every day, that same times article notes mystery fare like a detective embodies, the mystery breaks with convention, as Mcdormand Dissects The Drama and simultaneously enacting it. Different than typical mysteries while packing in satisfying twists and shocks. Or the venerable npr which praises the new book, West Heart Kill as sheer catnip for leaders. To which i say, meow. Were not going to do any spoilers tonight. If you want to know, go online and order West Heart Kill now and youll get inside the mysterious mind of not only this debut novel that you see right here but so much of the show youre watching. So whatever you decide to do or read or dont do, well tell you, on behalf of the beat and msnbc, we are happy for dan and proud of him. And one final point here, real talk, dan did not ask me to plug the book on air. I wanted to, and i said i bet some beat nicks out there, maybe you, might be interested in what msnbc journalists are writing in their free time or should i say, free time. If you spend that time writing a whole published novel. All right, that does it for me. The readout with joy reid is
