Hit for the former president. Sources told abc news, his former Chief Of Staff, we have talked about a lot over the last two years, mark meadows has been granted immunity from the Special Counsel jack smith, in exchange for his testimony before a federal grand jury. Abc report, quote, the source said meadows informed smiths team that he repeatedly told trump in the weeks after the 2020 president ial election that the allegations of significant voting fraud coming to them were baseless. Nbc news has not independently confirmed this report. Here is what the former lead investigator for the January 6th Committee had to say about all of this. If its true, it is the most significant evidential if element in the entire investigation, and there is really no one who was closer to the former president in the days between the election and his reluctant release of the white house than mark meadows. Meadows lawyer says, he, quote, told abc their story was largely an accurate that there were also huge developments in the former president s other cases today, both criminal and civil. My colleague Laura Jarrett has all put details on those. For weeks, attorney jenna ellis furiously defended then president donald trump, as he falsely claimed the 2020 election was rigged. Today, she sobbed as she told a judge she was wrong. If i need what i know now, i would have to climb to represent donald trump and these postcolonial adjusts. In a georgia courtroom, she pleaded guilty to a felony for helping fuel lies about thousands of dead people casting votes in 2020. I failed to do my due diligence. And smiling for her mugshot just two months ago, now the fourth codefendant to flip and fulton countys Sprawling Election Interference case against the former president and more than a dozen others. Mr. Trump has pleaded not guilty, arguing hes been targeted by democratic prosecutors because hes the republican front runner. He was back in a manhattan courtroom today, facing the states star witness, his former fixer attorney, michael cohen. This is about accountability, plain and simple. Raise your right hand . It was cohens congressional testimony that jumpstarted that new york case, were his former boss now stands to lose his namesake company, accused of exaggerating the value of his assets to receive better loan terms, in a 250 Million Dollar civil fraud suit. It was my experience that mr. Trump inflated his total assets went and served his purposes. Today, cohen said he was tasked by the former president with who is ticked mr. Trumps total assets to achieve a number he arbitrarily elected. While mr. Trumps legal team has argued, realistic values are subjective. Outside of court, mr. Trump took aim at cohens credibility, pointed to cohens guilty plea for tax fraud and lying to congress. Hes a liar, as you know. Hes a liar. Hes trying to get a better deal for himself. With all of that to cover, lets get smarter with the help of our leadoff panel. Tonight peter bakers here, chief White House Correspondent for the new york times. Katie benner, pulitzer prizewinning Justice Department reporter. Also with the times and former federal prosecutor and my chief legal explainer, glenn kirschner. So glenn, of course im going to you first. We are stuck with us abc news reporting about meadows. What does immunity and a case like this mean . How big of a deal is it . You know, i think its an important development, staff, but i am a little concerned. Heres why. When a witness has incriminating evidence that prosecutors want, there are a few different ways to extract that incriminating information out of a guy like mark meadows. What way is you can subpoena him to the grand jury and ask nicely, would you please testify about it . But i got like mark meadows, apparently, has a Fifth Amendment right against Self Incrimination which he will invoke. So thats not an affective way to get out of him. The preferred way to get information out of a guy like mark meadows, who remember, was burning lots of documents in his fireplace, presumably not for the warmth, those documents generated. It feels like it was up to no good. A guy like that, you would want to charge him with his crimes, you would want to convince him to plead guilty, take responsibility for his crimes, flip, and testify truthfully against others. That is apparently, based on this reporting, not the way jack smith opted to proceed with mark meadows. Instead, he granted meadows immunity. I dont Call Immunity and immunity deal or an immunity agreement. It is sort of The Last Resort for the prosecutor. It is a prosecutors least preferred method to get evidence out of a guy like mark meadows. Why . Because what you can for immunity, technically its called a compulsion order, your compelling him to testify by extinguishing his Fifth Amendment right against Self Incrimination. Guess what, hes not being held accountable for any of his crimes. So and important development, yes, because this is the vehicle apparently jack smith used to extract incriminating information from mark meadows that will, perhaps, but used against donald trump. But again, its not a preferred method. It would have been better if mark meadows had been held accountable for his crimes, assuming jack smith had enough to charge him with those crimes. That would have been a better way in my experience to bring mark meadows into the fold. Do you think theres a chance jack smith didnt have enough . I think there is a chance, or we would have seen him indicted or perhaps negotiate a guilty plea behind the scenes before it was necessary to indict him, and flip him, turn him into a cooperator. But i think there are forces at play behind the scenes that we just dont know much about at this point. And look. Mark meadows is charged in a r. I. C. O. Conspiracy in georgia. So its not like hes getting off completely free and clear. But again, i think the Immunity Angle with mark meadows its a bit of a curiosity. Peter, youve got to tell me what trump world is saying tonight. And i dont want to hear, mark meadows, never heard of him. Thats not an option. Hes just the guy who brought a diet coke, right . This is a big deal. I think, if in fact, he is cooperating with federal prosecutors to the extent that the report indicates, it is hard to see how this is not a devastating moment for donald trump. Mark meadows is in the room if not all key meetings, certainly must keep meetings. He was part of almost all the key conversations with the Justice Department, with the georgia officials, he flew to georgia himself as part of the effort to try to convince them to find 11, 000 votes, donald trump put it into a phone call with the Secretary Of State there. He knows everything there is done, and presumably, that the prosecutors want to know. And at versus a lot of interesting questions. Why would they only get with immunity, as opposed to forcing some sort of plea deal . Remember, mark meadows was asked to speak to the January 6th Committee and congress, refused to do so, and congress referred him for contempt to the Justice Department. The Justice Department state, no, were not going to charge. Him at that point, we began to wonder whether mark meadows was cooperating with prosecutors. Why would they not prosecute him at that point . Was it because he was already cooperating with them . We dont know. That if hes been cooperating with him all this time, maybe hes been a more significant assistant to prosecutors that we know. We are obviously going to find that out at some point. Speculation. But maybe that explains why there wouldnt to get lighter on him then fani willis is on witnesses flipping in georgia. Katie, what is this reporting tell us about how meadows sees his own position and potential to be indicted . Yes, i think two things. Its very interesting both what peter and dylan have said. Meadows is a key witness. We have seen in the past close to donald trump including in the documents case, being compelled to give testimony, being granted immunity, and its unclear whether or not that testimonies actually yielded prosecuted for much. I think its too early to say. I think for meadows, he would not have done this unless he had to. But of course, there is always outweigh under oath with a prevalent too much information. He has One Of The Best Defense Lords in the business and he knows his Defense Lawyer knows that Justice Department into an. Its clear he felt he had, to but its not clear how much of the department actually. Got somebody who knows mark meadows very, very. Well cassidy hutchinson. She was on our air earlier this evening and i want to share some of her comments. Mark was sort of all over the court in some ways. Hey would privately admit to me sometimes, we had lost the election, or hit privately admit to me trump had said we had lost the election. Mark also was a key player and breaking and characters like Sidney Powell and like jenna ellis, who now have pled guilty. Glenn, does this help or hurt meadows credibility as a witness . I, maine all over the map, she took us around several impact there. You know, what i like peters. Point maybe its because meadows has been so helpful for so long, on so many fronts, that the prosecutors gave him the gift of immunity, meaning, you are not going to be held accountable for your crimes. But ill tell, you he better give us the shooter on the grassy knoll and the Gps Coordinates of body and donald trump, if hes not going to be held accountable for any of his, what seems to, be pretty significant misconduct. But the our thing immunity does, is it makes for of the rate challenging trial witness. Because he will be crossexamined mightily. White a minute, you engaged in all of this misconduct and you were never held accountable for any of it . Instead, they gave you immunity and now you expect us to believe your testimony when you incriminate authors even though you never had to take responsibility for your own crimes . I have seen that bright bed and ive seen juries, you know, look pretty skeptical of accepting the Trial Testimony of someone who got a free pass for his crimes. As you can tell, im not enamored of immunity. Im enamored of people held accountable for their crimes, tech responsibility, and in agreed to testify truthfully about the crimes of others. Peter, take us down a wildcat memory line as it relates to donald trump and mark meadows relationship. Because last year we learned that Donald Trumps pack gave 1 million to Mark Meadows Nonprofit just weeks after the january Six Committee was fraud. Remember, he went down to maralago, he kind of Kiss The Ring and voila, 1 Million Dollars. What can you tell us about their relationship . Thats exactly it. Mark meadows was first of all Donald Trumps number one highlight in many ways. In congress, in the freedom caucus. And then when he quit the congress to become Chief Of Staff. It was Chief Of Staff he basically believed was most intimate with what President Trump wanted to do at the time, one most eager to fulfill the president s wishes, or is at or chiefs of staff before him head at times resisted, Resistance Decisions the president was trying to make they felt were unwise or illegal or unconstitutional. Mark meadows was aligned with trump sticking on all of these things. Kaz hutchinson, in her book described this in great vivid color. Just how much meadows was trying to please the boss. Its phrases like, that youve heard all the time. He obviously was also very strict. Her recounting in the, we saw him trying to appease a very angry president , who wasnt satisfied with whatever it is mark meadows had come up with. And therefore he was anxious and finding increasingly desperate ways to satisfy. When as you point out, he was of course loyal to him even after leaving office. They have been wondering about him in trump world for a while now. Wondering if he was loyal to him. Meadows has not been public, has not been kissing the ring lately, turn. Lets go to georgia. One of trumps attorneys, jenna ellis, who has been very close to him, very loyal to him, whom in that georgia case now the latest alleged coconspirator pleaded guilty. Katie, what does this mean for fani williss case and also, jims credibility was just weeks ago she was i did absolutely nothing, no way, no how. Yeah, you know so i think this tells us to things that phone evils case she was building using cooperative witnesses. Using people who have. Flipped building evidence about main parts of our case. These allegations came to undercut georgias election laws, election results. We have ken chesebro who was part of the fake electors prod, we have and Sidney Powell, who are spreading most many, ill say many of the false claims of widespread voter fraud. In part, for paul, and tell us they were either because they were times favored by donald trump or because they were so close to people like rudy giuliani, particularly janet ellis. They were in the inner circle. And this is something that no prosecutor has been ab to really get at with the exception of the civil case in new york, and michael cohen. People in the inner circle have a better chance of telling us what trump was actually saying, doing and thinking. And thats also something that we have not seen in any public filings by any prosecutors. That State Of Mind issue is going to be key in trying to get a jury to find donald trump guilty of these crimes. Thats the first big thing. Breeze driftin on. [coughing]. By, you know how i feel. We get the latest, from my colleague richard engel. Gaza looks like it was hit by an earthquake. The Hamas Run Health Ministry claims more than 700 palestinians were killed in just the last 24 hours. Nearly half of them children in the deadliest day in gaza so far. Our camera crew captured one moment, a snapshot of gaza today. Multiple witnesses say this three Story Building was hit by an israeli airstrike. First, you could see a hand. The girl is alive and not alone. We counted five children pulled from this building. Three, living to appear to be dead. Residents tell us about the same family. The Israeli Government said hamas brought this upon gaza when it launched its brutal tara tech, murdering 1400 israelis including Young Children and babies. Israel said its targeting hamas and today stopped assault of hamas. Divers attempting to infiltrate israeli territories, by sea at least 220 hostages are still and gaza, today we heard from one of the hostages, released last night 85yearold as small of people came through the fence her daughter helped her describe what she called, two weeks of how she was taken on the back of a motorbike. Recounting how she was hit by sticks, and her captors, kept an underground tent the husband remains hostage. Well today, the u. N. , families of hamas captives pleaded for the return. Why is no one crying up for these people to be allowed access to the red cross . Why is no one demanding just proof of life. You like davids brother is being held to. Kidnap from the music festival, where hamas gunman executed hundreds of israelis. She shared with us, the videos hamas posted online. Hes handcuffed, with his hands behind his back. And terrorist holding the gun in one hand, and in the other Hand Headlock in the. Brother eli, just like many israelis, wants the world to see these images to understand what israels up against. Today, Prime Minister netanyahu told israeli troops that they were facing the next stage in the war. Israel has, of course, been preparing for a Ground Invasion of gaza, and so far that has not happened. Tonight, President Biden was asked whether the United States has made effort to get israel to hold off on its plan. Heres what he said. Are you urging israel to delay its Ground Invasion, sir . I want to bring, in my front door me that. Former Chief Of Staff, of the cia in the pentagon. When netanyahu tells his troops, get ready for the next phase of war. What does that mean . Well i think, the Counterterrorism Operation by the idf into gaza is inevitable. That Counterterrorism Operation is going to include ground forces, its going to include air forces, its going to include naval forces. I dont think its a question of if those forces are going. And i think the question is one. And, the timing is going to be discussed, and closely coordinated between israel and the United States. And here is why. Because, one of the dimensions that we are learning about today, stephanie, is that u. S. Troops have to set the force. They have to move into position in the region to respond to any possibility that iran could retaliate against the United States. We have already seen reports that iran has conducted, at least 13 strikes against u. S. Military bases in iraq and in syria. Nbc news reported, today, that is many as two dozen americans were wounded in those drone and missile attacks. The uss warship had intercept cruise missiles, fired by iran proxies at our ally israel. And so United States wants to be very ready. And i think one of the reasons why netanyahu is holding his office, is because were saying to him, let us get a position so that things go Out Of Control here. Were in a position to defend ourselves, and to help you. Do you believe there really is a constructive plan or conversations being had about releasing more hostages . There are so many still being held, its a Huge Positive that forever released. And do you think hamas is just flooding a couple, out here and there to buy themselves time. Undoubtedly, hamas is doing what theyre doing with the hostages, theyre doing the same thing for civilians. Theyre using him as human shields. Theyre using him to try and forestall, delay any Counterterrorism Operation by the idf. And thats going to have to be waived very carefully by israel s political leadership. And, so four hostages coming out is a wonderful for those families, but with 220 still remaining we are nowhere close to resolving this. And i do think that the families who went to the u. N. Today were so heartfelt, and frankly, compelling in their call for International Red cross visitation to the hostages. Exhausted like everyone in gaza. And also all of us here who are following whats going on in gaza. Theres a lot of innocent people who are being killed in gaza. You reported the number of children more than 2400 or so, every hour. There is a children who are killing other innocent people who had nothing to do with what happened in israel. We did not choose to be born in gaza, or live in gaza. They aspire like my children to become engineers, doctors are business owners. They want to draw skies with flowers and butterflies instead of raining death on them. The situation is horrible. Doctors are running out of everything including medical supply, medication, anesthesia, medicine there performing surgeries on the floor of the Operating Rooms without anesthesia. They dont know whether it will have more for their patience, tomorrow, after tomorrow. There are patients suffering. Cancer patients are not getting cancer treatments. Many innocent people are dying because of the lack of medical supplies and of course the lack of, food and clean water that is complicating the issues. Many indications is because of our happening, especially among children because of the lack of clean water and then you have also the shortage of fuel that is necessary to operate Electrical Generators in the hospital. This is hell. The running out of supplies. Are they running out of hope . People in gaza city are being told over and over to evacuate and go to the south. What does that mean for people in hospitals . They cant just hop in a car, or walk, and there might not even be Hospital Beds for them. Even moving from the north of gaza, to the south of gaza is impossible. Realistically. Because there is not enough transportation. You cannot transport hospitals or patients who are critically ill from managing powers or to other hospitals to the south because there is not enough beds for them in the south and there is no monitors, there are no medics who can transport them. They will die during transportation. Especially on ventilators or newborn incubators are critically ill patients who are in the intensive care unit. So this is complicating the issue. Theyre not running out of hope. I mean they have their community, these doctors chose to stengle. One of the doctor who is a friend of mine, a pediatrician, told me that he was offered a much higher salary in different states in the gulf states to work and live there. But he chose to live and work and serve his community in gaza because he believes that is community deserves to have doctors like him. These are amazing doctors who we can learn from them, from their resilience and from their determination to serve their communities. And they deserve our support. Without a doubt, that doctor could go elsewhere and he is choosing to stay to help others put his own life at risk. Extraordinary. Doctor, thank you for all the work that you do i appreciate you being here tonight. Thank you. And, now republicans have nominated louisiana congressman mike johnson just hours after their last nominee dropped out. Meanwhile, former speaker Kevin Mccarthy is floating a new plan to reinstall himself a speaker and a congressman jim jordan assistant speaker. Whatever that is. When asked why this new idea one gop lawmaker replies, were desperate. Back with me tonight, robert gibbs, former Obama CampaignSenior Adviser and White House Press secretary under president obama. Henry galen, cofounder of the lincoln project, hes also worked on a number of gop campaigns, including john mccain, Arnold Schwarzenegger and george bush. Read, i turn to you first because im pretty fired up about this. I come from the business community. Not politics. There is no business on planet earth that would accept this kind of dysfunction, right . Business leads members of a Business Organization saying were desperate, where a mess, no leader for three weeks. That business would go out of business, or people would get fired, or all across the board. Why is it that way except one of the most important organizations out there are elected officials, were like, i guess we can do it. That stings. Read . You cant hear me . Robert. Maybe read just doesnt want to answer this question. How are we allowing this to be . How do we just, except i Guess Congress doesnt work . Can you imagine that in any place of business . No, you cant imagine a place of business. You could imagine in a small Town City Council and yet here it is happening in half of the legislative branch of government. And you mentioned, stephanie, there is three weeks without a speaker. In three weeks and three days the government runs out of funding. All while the stories that youve covered before we got on showed just how important having a functioning government, is and how dangerous the world is right now. So, look, on one hand you left, on the other hand you cry. Because ill be honest with, you i dont know what the end inside his is. I dont think weve hit the bottom, i dont think were any closer to somebody getting to turn 17 votes on the republican side and we seem to be getting quite frankly, farther and farther away from. It read, unfortunately for, you did not hear me rent. So youll get it again. There is no business on planet earth that would allow no management, no boss, no ceo for three weeks with no plan and the other executives gone. I guess were desperate. Why is that okay for congress. Well, look, you know a business has support. It could fire people. If the executives dont do their job, theres plenty of failsafes. In the United States congress, these people are erected like what you understand what im saying, the American People have elected these votes. And none of them are going to figure up but the stuff matters because you know what they all got elected to be carnival burgers. And so they. Our and some of what youre seeing, that is the ultimate outcome of what the Republican House conference is always going to be. When youve talked about whether or not its Kevin Mccarthy, jim jordan. Thats not a thing, this new guy, hes an election denier. The 20 or so people that live in biden districts, they cant vote for this guy. And, so were going to be right back where we are. Youre going to have to vote tomorrow, where this guy wont get to 18. And hell go home for the. We can hope to god that somehow, some miracle will drop from the skies and get them somebody who everybody agrees on. How does this guy, mike johnson even end up the possible speaker . Right, i mean when you think about all the muscle and hustling, Kevin Mccarthy was doing to get himself in that position, ive got to be honest. When i heard Mike Johnsons name tonight, i was, like johnson who . And then i saw his picture and im pretty sure i never seen him in my life. Reed . I, mean again, this is where we are. You know basically decapitated the entire house speakership. Even at least stephan said that she claims every time they endorse anybody they lose on the floor. She doesnt want to lose her hand at. This is what youre going to, see its gonna be these guys. Its gonna be somebody from louisiana, somebody from arkansas, somebody from missouri. And ultimately, who is going to have to make this decision . Who i think should make this decision of these republicans that consider themselves problem solvers. Across the aisle, 20 of you. Not five. Not six. 20 of you. Across the aisle, make a deal with jeffrey, were gonna do aid packages, were gonna do spending hills. The voters cant decide On The Issues of 2024. Were not gonna vote with you all the. Time but were gonna get this thing back to work. A lot of these guys have been playing for all their entire careers. The cars are gonna squash them. Theyre gonna pull their primaries. Do whats right for the American People. Now, your careers are probably over. Except, and do the right thing. Reed galen, did it himself with a reference to roger. Speaking of that, watch this. Just look at this. Here we go. All of the its like the hug of death, all the people she is endorsing. Robert, what do you make of this . That the people who are theoretically the leaders of the party saying yes you can. To nominate after nominee who just keep dropping out. What does that tell you . Well i think, above all, it tells me how unserious the House Republicans are and, in many ways, the larger Republican Party is wanting to govern the country. And, i dont i sense of wearing this on their side that they continue to do this. But i dont sense the accountability that we havent had a speaker for three weeks that the time its going to take to try to figure out how to Fund Government mabel exceeds the three weeks thats remaining before that. On the senate side, were not approving even members of the joint Chief Of Staff in a time goes inside the tooth and calms the nerve down. And my patients say you know doc, it really works. Dude . And nobody understands that better than officer harry dunn, he was on duty during the insurrection on january six. And fought heroically to protect lawmakers from the rioters. January six, still, isnt over for me and what we went through that day was traumatic. [crowd chanting] officers were being bloodied in fighting. Many were screaming. [screaming] [crowd chanting] i witnessed the rioters using all kinds of weapons against officers including flagpoles, medal like rex that they had torn apart and various kind of projectiles. [screaming] telling the truth shouldnt be hard. Fighting on january six, that was hard. I want to bring in a friend and hero of mine, officer harry dunn. Author of the new book Standing My Ground a Capitol Police officers fight for accountability and good trouble after january 6th harry. I want to congratulate you on this book. I want to thank you for writing it. You have told your story many times, including on the show, does it feel different to write this book and just put it out there and words for all the world . You know i realize it was a Healing Process for me. Writing was very cathartic. It was like a large Therapy Session writing my book, getting all my feelings and emotions out on their. But then i realized this is more than just a Therapy Session, we need individuals that are getting messages from these right wingers, the politicians, these people that are saying that january six wasnt a big deal. We need a first handed count of what really happened that day from somebody whos there. And i wrote the book for individuals to get educated, to be about what happened that day. And not be subjected to the lives of individuals that say wasnt a big deal. And that we need to move on from it. Then how does it make you feel that you wrote this book to educate people. Right, this book isnt just about your feelings. Its about the truth. Not just year at the, the truth, right . Because theres a truth and then theres lies. But there are loads of people out there that dont want to know the truth. That dont want to read this book. And that deny the truth. But there are a lot of people that want to know the truth that dont have it available to. Them like you always say lets get smarter, right . So lets use this opportunity to reach the individuals that want to be reached, that want to know knowledge. That want to know the truth. But they dont have the opportunity. Theyre only getting one side of the truth because of multiple accounts, the realistic accounts arent out there. Its a continuation of my Public Service, so to speak. Not just being a Police Officer but also writing that book. The last time i spoke to you, you, said you wanted accountability. You wanted donald trump to pay. You think thats gonna happen . The last time we spoke you said, i dont know. Were in a different place than we were then when we last spoke. The Justice Department is checking along with the charges made march 3rd. Hell be standing trial in d. C. And i do believe that he will. It took a while for me to believe that he would because it had taken so long for the Justice Department to want to play a Special Counsel and then for two for the Special Counsel to bring charges for. But they did and even though it moves slow, we are still here. And were waiting for justice and accountability. You wrote something very sad in the book that you watch lawmakers. Some that had become your friends loose themselves to partisanship. Have you spoken to any of them since . Has anybody turned the corner i was wrong. U know what, not necessarily in those words but individuals i have spoken with they hate the direction that the country is on and january six kind of brought it all ahead and they havent necessarily apologized but we have spoken about were in a bad place in this country and we need to do better. But heres the thing, when people say were in a bad place and we need to do better, every single one of, us every day have a chance to do better especially our lawmakers. So is a hard for you to continue to your job, to work with these people to know that theyre not telling the truth about one of the most significant days in american history. Well thats the thing, my job isnt to be their conscience. The American Voters are responsible for putting those people in office so thats why writing that book and educating voters who are the people who hold those lawmakers accountable is important to me.
