Some of the most unreliable accounts on that platform are being provided by the sites own owner elon musk. That is k enabling those against keep spreading misinformation. Ultimately a performing reputable news outlets. Researchers from theuniversity of washington tell nbc news, at its core what we are looking at here is a different version of what newsis. It is, fast it is unvetted. And it is very often sourced. There is every indication that the shift is not accidental and that its part of a vision of what news is going to be on x nbc news Senior Reporter who wrote that story, she joins us now. Brandy, who is spreading this misinformation . Who is behind these accounts . Well, theres two parts to that answer. The first thing is who are these new elite Breaking News accounts where a lot of people on ex are getting their news around israel and hamas war. So, these accounts are pretty new accounts. And they are run not from news organizations, but from really political disinformers, people whose job it is to disinform about politics and whats going on. And they are weird, we have some mens rights activists, people who are misogynists and spent a lot of their time before this war promoting we the misogynist influencer andrew tate, a rightwing pr guy from poland. Its this hodgepodge of people utilizing what musk has built twitter, or x, into now. They are utilizing it just as its incentivize on the platform, to get you fast, sometimes violent, often wrong information. The second part of that answer is, you know, who is behind this . Musk is behind this. Musk has built a new x, the old twitter, not used to be missions on trying to give you reliable information, even though it was coming fast. People used to care about it and musk now does not like traditional media. He is against the news in general. These are the people that he thinks are the future of news. Thats what we are getting. Brandy, i think if you are, as i am, a user of the platform that feels apparent in the user experience. Explain to me, but for someone who understands the background working of this and someone who doesnt use the platform how musks specific changes to the site have contributed to the problem you are discussing. Yeah. So we used to have a lot of systems in place. Twitter used to spend a lot of time and a lot of energy and employ a lot of people whose jobs it was, especially in Breaking News situations, to keep the platform as reliable as possible. You can imagine why this is really important on voting day or why its really important when there is a hurricane coming to your area and you need reliable information and quickly. The big indicator of that reliability used to come with a check mark. That used to mean verified. Whether you were the department of sanitation in new york or the president of the United States or a journalist, you had a blue check, park meaning that twitter vetted, you knew you were who you were. And that was helpful in times of crisis. It was helpful in crisis situations and Breaking News situations. Now that check has been stripped as a sign of reliability. What he has done is given everybody who gives 8 to subscribe to twitter their subscription service. Now they get that check mark. What we had the other day, for example, we had a person with a blue check mark saying i am a reporter from al jazeera and im on the ground. They were spreading things that just werent true. And that they had a blue check mark and that tweet went wild. It went viral and people were really believing this is from a person on the ground. You can imagine the kind of propaganda and lies and misinformation that can come when you dont know who is behind an account. And, so i think that is the biggest indicator of what he has done to the site. But there are others as well. We used to have a trending bar that was curated by professionals, many of them who used to be in use, who would make sure people are seeing up to date information that was pertinent to the moment. Thats gone. What has replaced that and replaced that curation, you know, i think its really funny, musk tucks all the time about how this is free speech. But its not free speech. Its not like everything is just being put out there and we can decide. The accounts were talking about have been promoted, reply, to interacted with, and in some cases outright elon musk told us 100 60 million, follow these accounts because this is the best news you are going to get. We are still getting it, the curated experience, we are just getting that curation from elon musk. Ive got about 30 seconds left, brandi. Your advice to someone who still wants to utilize this platform but doesnt want to get sucked into misinformation . I would say, for, one not be on the platform. Im hardly on it anymore unless i have to be for work. If you have to be for some reason, i would create one of the last things they have is the ability to create lists. I would create a list of all the journalists and the outlets that you know and trust. I would only look at the curated list that i curated myself. That is the one thing you can do to fight back against musks curation, curate your own. They are in need of food. They are in need of water. Critically, israel is saying there is no fuel included in these deliveries. Israels concern that fuel will fall in the hands of hamas, it will be used by this Terrorist Organization to continue its war effort. But the United Nations is saying they have three days of fuel left. Once they run out, they say, if their humanitarian efforts will completely collapse. You will see the lights go off at hospitals, diesel is whats needed for Power Stations to keep those lights on. The United Nations is saying fuel is the absolute lifeline here. Well, it looks like its an initial sort of Precursor Incursion ahead of what we expect that some point will be a much larger Ground Invasion. We have been standing here for weeks saying the Ground Invasion feels imminent and it remains true that there are Israeli Forces massed at the gaza border. It has become a bit of a Guessing Game now exactly when israel might go in. This would already be a complicated Military Operation under the best of circumstances. But there are 200 israeli hostages in gaza. One of the questions hanging over israeli decisionmakerss does it make sense to delay the invasion in order to allow more time for negotiations . We saw those two americans, a mother and a daughter, released on friday. Hamas is saying it is prepared to released two elderly israelis in the coming days. Not clear if they actually have any intention of following through on that or not. Its also become a little bit of a diplomatic guessing. Game the conventional wisdom here is that israel is unlikely to launch this Ground Invasion when there is a western leader in town.
