In terms of whats going on in gaza and in israel. I also want to talk to him about this whole deadlock in the congress and speakership. Lots to talk to the former chairman about. I think will be chairman again soon. Ranking member weeks in a minute. We will be watching. Take it away. Good to talk to, you as. Always the fabulous simone. Good evening, welcome to politicsnation. Tonights lead, a moment of uncertainty. Right now, the worlds eyes are on israel hamas for. As israel prepares for massive Ground Offensive in gaza. U. S. Secretary of state Anthony Blinken told nbc this morning the administration is increasing its Military Presence in the region. To deter hezbollah and iran from expanding the conflict. Back in washington today, President Biden spoke by phone with several european leaders about developments in the region. Following an earlier call with the israeli Prime Minister. The white house is waiting on the 105 Billion Dollar National Security package, including 14 Billion Dollars in aid to israel. Waiting on it to pass congress. Progress is roadblock by the republican speaker fight. The gop now has nine candidates for the job. No clear consensus pick. A new and potentially historic week is ahead. We will get you ready for it on politicsnation tonight. We start with an update from israel. Nbc news correspondent hala gorani is in tel aviv. Helena, its midnight in israel. Two weeks into its conflict with hamas, nbc news is reporting a second convoy of trucks bringing aid to palestinians and it is positioned on the egyptian side of the border crossing. What is the latest from israel and gaza . Reverend, we know that 14 trucks have made it through. 14 today. 22 days ago. Still a trickle. The gaza strip needs many, many more trucks on any average day before the war. 3 to 400 would make the crossing. Each truck maybe has ten, 20, 30,000 bottles of water. We know that the millions of people who are stranded inside that strip of land need more in terms of food and medical supplies as well. As far as the planned incursion, we are hearing from the israeli president office. This is significant. The french president Emmanuel Macron and the dutch Prime Minister mark with a a due to visit tel aviv and meet with Benjamin Netanyahu in the coming days. Presumably, that means the incursion will not happen in the next 48 hours. It would be unlikely that the military would launch the offensive with visiting Heads Of State and in the meantime the israeli Prime Minister is visiting proof troops not in the south. Saying the country is ready for two fronts, ready to fight on two fronts. By that, of course, he means taking on potentially hezbollah. Which is allied with iran. Western nations, the United States are all trying to contain this conflict to this part of the middle east and not let it explode into a much wider regional we are seeing a war of words at this point. Some intensifying skirmishes in the northern part of israel near its border with lebanon. There are concerns into parts of the country right now as we all wait for this expected unanticipated incursion into the gaza strip, reverend. Thank you, nbcs alex gorani. Joining me now is congressman greg meeks. Democrat of new york. He is the Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs committee. Congressman, thank you for joining us. Lets start with israels war against hamas. The u. S. Is increasing its Military Presence in the region. Sending more air defense systems. Secretary of state Anthony Blinken tells nbc this morning the administration is taking steps to deter iran and has bella from escalating this conflict. That, home the white house as requested 14 Billion Dollars in aid to israel as part of the 105 Billion Dollar National Security request to congress. That request is of course complicated by lack of a house speaker. We will get to that. First, as you, as the ranking democrat on House Foreign Affairs. How concerned are you that this conflict could spread way beyond the gaza now . Im worried, if there is one thing im most worried about, it is that. We as the president has indicated, as well as eisenhower into the area. It is utilized to deter hezbollah are iran from entering because that is a gamechanger. It makes me very nervous. And i have to be honest. We dont need it to be regionally wide other than engaging the events. I know Secretary Austin has also increase the number of in the area and has also given israel more of iron dome to knock missiles down if there are ones in the defensive missiles. I have to tell you, that would make me very nervous because it could draw others into the war in the middle east. It could really blow up. It could blow up. In the meantime, one of my concerns, you heard the report in tel aviv we are not seeing enough of supplies will get it through. Its way under the number of buses and things that are needed to come into the area. Just like you and i have talked and had a real humane concern about innocent People Killed when, this began in israel. We are concerned about the people in gaza being able to get what they need to survive. We have got to somehow, we have to make human life equal and something that we all cherish. And agree with you more, each human life is very important and sacred. Unfortunately, hamas is the enemy of both the palestinians and the israelis because they are using the palestinians as human shields. We need to make sure that the president and our state has worked 24 7 to try to get the rafah gate or be opened by egypt. Theyre so there can be supplies coming in. We need to make sure i know its difficult because the number of migrants they had cross into their boundaries. It would be difficult if there is something to be done. Jordan is there. As i, said egypt. So, the people, everyday citizens, not hamas, weve got to make sure they their lives are precious also. So theyre in a heavy passageway to safety and security. As israel continues to do to make sure hamas is gone. That is the key, hamas has to be gone so there can be they need to look forward down the road. I think we have to start doing that now. How we can finally get peace in the region. , review and i are both advocating strongly for a two state solution. We and the israelis, and they can live side by side. You can to do it with hamas who says they dont want peace. They want israel. They say israel does not have the right to exist. And when people say that, that makes it hard for peace. Almost impossible for peace, actually. While i have, you lets get back to congress here. And bbc news is reporting the house gop caucus now has its new list of nominees for speaker. Ahead of a possible caucus vote on tuesday. Nine republicans were run to 60 Kevin Mccarthy making their case for nomination at a gop candidate for tomorrow night. On your, side House Democrats have been unanimous in their support for minority leader Hakeem Jeffries across last week speakers votes everyone, democrats, voted for jeffries. Do you sense that there is anyone in this new crop of republican candidates that House Democrats can work with . . Rev, under the leadership of jeffries, we are ready, we have been with mccarthy. And then with mchenry. They said democrats are looking for a bipartisan way forward. And we have not talked about anything extreme. We talked about it, we said we can work with anyone. Theres three things we thought that would be important. One, make sure that the Budget Numbers that were agreed to by the republicans, we did the debt ceiling deal. Those numbers stay where they are. Not the 30 cut. Some of my colleagues on the other side of the aisle said they support israel. They voted days before to cut israels budget by 30 . We want those numbers to stay they are. We have to make sure that we are able to pass the president s supplemental requests. That is funding for ukraine and funding for israel. Now, timmy, if you look at how the republicans are working, ive said this earlier. If you look at the number of the nine people, there its like nine different games. Each come from a different sector of the republican party. A different game after this one or that one. They are fighting on another. I dont know. Its hard for us to try to work ends it seems as though they have said they want nothing to do. They dont want to work with a bipartisan way forward. Most of the American People want to do it. They seem like theyre going to have to fight it out and have their own civil war among themselves. Hopefully, maybe they will do it by a secret ballot. That hopefully, they will do something, November 17th is close. We cannot afford to have a shutdown. We have to go, thats my concern i would get some popcorn and watch the make a fool of themselves but November 17th will close down spending of the government. 4 million workers militarily. We cant play with us. Representative gregory meeks, thank you for being with, us after the break, Relief Groups in israel and in gaza. Humanitarian crisis continues to worsen and both. Our next to gas will tell us what they need an order to help many of the innocent people caught in the middle of the israel and hamas fight. Fight hi. My name is kim and i am 41 years old. On friday, President Biden laid out details for an over 100 Billion Dollar National Security package. That includes not only military aid, but also more than Nine Billion Dollars in humanitarian assistance for the conference in ukraine and israel. The funding for israel would provide security support, bolster efforts to secure the release of hostages, and extend humanitarian aid to civilians affected by the conflict. Joining us now is kathy reade, ceo of American Friends of them which is israels official ambulance service, blood services, and Disaster Rescue agencies. Let me ask you this, kathy, your organization relies on support from donors, including those from the United States to keep your general operations going. You dont take government support. What is the need on the ground by israel . Certainly for our organization, which is really a combination, if you think about, it the American Red Cross puts every ems service in the country, in the United States. You combine all of this together, it would be the equivalent of right now, weve lost ten emts, and we have had 14 ambulances put out of service. Of those ten emts, three were murdered while they were treating patients. What we need our replacement ambulances, supplies for treating patients for the blood bank, the building you see behind me is the worlds only underground and shielded blood bank. It opened last year and was founded by americans. We need blood banks, equipment for processing blood. We are waiting now to see what is going to happen next with hezbollah in the north. Youve already been evacuating cities and towns. We know that its a possibility that things will get much hotter before they get easier. Ambulances, blood banks, wound treating equipment, flak jackets, helmets, we have a whole list of things that people can visit our website and share that with them. We would be grateful for any support. Whats the biggest obstacle that your organization is facing right now . Its a great question. Its making sure that we can get 33,000 volunteers out, and our 1400 ambulances. Covering the entire country because remember, we are not just taking care of what is happening with the war, but we are also responsible for the every day emergencies, accidents, individuals terror attacks that have happened. We have to get everybody out into ambulances, and then also making sure that they are protected, they have the supplies they need. Since the war began, more than 14ple have been killed in israel. Mostly civilians were killed in hamass initial assault. And in gaza, more than 3700 palestinians have been killed, according to the Gaza Health Ministry run by hamas. Can you talk a little bit about the human toll that the conflict has taken so far. As far as the weve treated 3000 people. Many of them with horrendous injuries. That is on the human side of the victims. Think also about these 33,000 volunteers, and what they have faced when they are seeing these horrific, brutal, terrible attacks that have happened, and how they are trying to be processing that, and to deal with that, and then go on and get right back out into the field, continuing to try and save lives. The toll is across the board. Thank you very much, cathy reed for being with us. A convoy of 14 aid trucks bringing aid to palestinians crossed the border, the Rafah Border Into gaza strip from egypt today. This is on top of 22 trucks carrying food, water, and medical supplies arriving yesterday. First, those shipments since the conflict began. Joining us now, steve president of the palestinian challenge runs relief fund. Your organization is one of the main American Relief organizations working in gaza. They have not only been providing the humanitarian aid for the children in need, but also been on the frontlines during the current crisis. What is the humanitarian conditions on the ground in gaza . And now that more aide can start to arrive in gaza. How impactful would these be for the civilians who have lived there, and many of them suffering . Thank, you reverend sharpton. I do not know where to start when you want to ask me with the conditions are of humanitarian crisis in gaza . We can start with defected 1700 children have been killed in the past two weeks. According to estimates, theres another thousand people buried under the rubble, homes that have been bombed. They have collapsed. How many of those were children, considering nearly half the population of gaza. How many children . 1700 children have been killed over the past two weeks in the gaza strip. Of the 4600 that you mentioned have been killed in the last two weeks, 1700 of those are children. Those are best estimates. It is counting the people that are buried, and many of those are children. Some of those are children that might be alive. We are not going to be in the amount of time that it takes to evacuate them. The bombings will continue, and they havent stopped. The entire population has been affected. When we talk about the humanitarian conditions on the ground in gaza, we are not just talking about an injured people, which is an amazing number, really tragic and sad. In addition to, that electricity has been cut off completely. The water is shutting down, united nations, we mention today that by wednesday, fuel will be running out in gaza completely. The hospitals which run on fuel, because they are not connected or depend on the electrical grid there, they run by generators. All of our hospitals in gaza will run out. All of the children that have been injured over the past two weeks, who are now on ventilators, in the intensive care units. There are hundreds of kids that have severe injuries. They are not going to have the power to generate lifesaving support for them. They are going to die a slow and miserable death in hospitals because gas is running out. The border has been closed for over two weeks. In addition to that, there is feud insecurity, water is not safe, it is not just a complete absolute collapse of the society and gaza. Whats happened there, it cannot be properly understood. Lets keep in mind, this trauma of experiencing violence firsthand on the part of civilians and particularly children, half of the population of gazas children that are experiencing every single day the insecurity of almost being bombed, Family Members being killed, their own homes living in warehouses and you and schools, tense, wherever they can find that safe shelter. Although there is no safe shelter. Every one of those children, every one of those people in gaza are currently traumatized psychologically. In addition to just trying to survive and live until the next day. Theres no way for me to properly describe the complete humanitarian crisis in gaza. It is unfathomable. Steve, this isendo. I am concerned about the human life on both sides, and particularly children. On the side of gaza, where you are working, your organization is. Do you put any of the blame on hamas . We are hearing that some are saying that hamas does not care. That their hand is here, causing some of it as well as the bombing coming from israel. Of course, the blame is on everybody that has failed to take the responsibility for solving this problem in this been going on for generations. The blame is on everybody. Certainly, hamas shares the plane was well. The issue here is not about blame, its what we do to stop it. It continued to kill hundreds of civilians in the gaza strip 1700 killed children have been killed. We can blame people, but how are we going to stop . It how are we going to save lives . How are we going to get to people right now . They are without food, medication, medical treatment. I get messages every day from medical doctors, trauma surgeons, they are asking i dont have suitors anymore, i dont have treatments anymore. They are practicing medieval medicine on a treatments because they dont have any other way to save their lives. We can blame whoever that we want. How is it going to solve this problem and save lives . Especially those in that situation in gaza. We can deal with the blame after we start saving and stabilizing lives. As you see the rising death tolls in both israel and gaza, the firsthand horrific stories of those most impacted by the war, how do you describe the sentiment of those young people that you cared for . That is a great question. It often gets overlooked. The young people in gaza, who i know, and have worked, with and have treated, through those medical missions, that we open with treating kids for cancer in gaza. All of the services we provide. I interact with young people in gaza are all the time. They are some of the most amazing, brave, and human people that i know in the world. They are hopeless. Many of them have never left the gaza strip in their entire life. They see the outside were through their portals of telephones and computers, and the internet. They see how normal life is. Everywhere in the world, but in gaza, where people can live freely, travel freely. They have normalized. In gaza, they are constrained in one of the considered one of the largest open air prison. There is a sense of hopelessness and depression, and sadness throughout the young people in gaza. They know that they are at the beginning of their life, no matter how hard they work, how hard they go to school, how are they dry, having a career, build something in their lives. They will never be able to amount to their full potential because of the conditions that they are born into in gaza. Steve, thank you very much for your time and work. Up next, nine more republicans throwing their hat into the ring. That is the race for speaker. Is stepping up its Military Presence in the middle east in order to help defend israel. Secretary of state Antony Blinken told nbc news that Biden White House is on guard for efforts by iran and its proxies to broaden the conflict throughout the region. About 200,000 israeli people have been evacuated from their homes in Northern Israel due to the threat of new attacks from hamas and hezbollah. The evacuations impact about 205 towns and cities through the borders, with libya and syria. The white house says that President Biden spent the day on the phone with leaders of several western ally nations, including the uk, and canada. Discussing the israel and hamas war. He also spoke with pope francis for about 20 minutes this morning. President biden and the pope, talking about the need to deescalate and find the solution towards lasting peace in the middle east. During his sunday address today, the pope called for peace and gaza and israel, offering prayers for the hostages, those that died, and their families. But in the last, hour police in detroit saying they have found no evidence the killing of a synagogue president was motivated by antisemitism. Friends and family held a funeral for Samantha Wall Earlier today. You look at on saturday morning. Lets get back to politicsnation with reverend al sharpton. Reverend al . Thank, you jessica. Lets now go to my Political Panel former democratic congresswoman Donna Edwards of maryland, and former republican congressman Carlos Curbelo of florida. Earlier today, nine republicans made it official that they were running to become the next speaker of the house. Tomorrow, there will be a candidate forum, and a gop conference vote on tuesday morning. Meanwhile, congressman mike flood wants to get a head of a number of another fiasco in the house, and is pushing a unity pledge among his caucus to support whoever wins the initial secret balance election, ensuring if they reach 217 votes. A majority of the Speaker Cabinets have signed the pledge. Carlos do you think that the unity pledge is a good idea . Would it work . Reverend, its a great idea. Political parties should have internal with fights, discussions, elections, and then unite so that the system can work, so that there is some predictability, and some coherence. The problem is, this idea of a unity pledge is anathema to the modern republican party, especially House Republicans. These are people who dont except outcomes. They did not accept the result of the 2020 election, and they do not accept the results of the internal elections within their own party. That is why they continue knocking on these candidates doors for speakers. This is a great idea, im just not sure thats every House Republican will sign it. If more than four dont sign, and it will be very hard to elect a new speaker with only republican votes. Lets discuss how the conflict between israel and hamas is impacting voters in michigan. Democratic leaders in the state say that theyre muslim and arab citizens are frustrated with President Biden, and threaten to not vote for him again. After he declared unwavering support for israel in the days after hamass terror attack. Michigans got one of the largest Arab American populations in the country. It was a critical swing state in 2020 to push biden over the top. Also this week, a u. S. State Department Official resigned over bidens administrations commitment to provide military aid to israel. Is this a problem that he needs to do more to address . Look, i think clearly, this is a challenge for the president. You can hear it over his avoiding remarks on the last several days. Both pledging support for israel as an ally, but also calling on israel to exercise proportionality, to take care of civilians in gaza. This was important for the president to do. In the coming days, and in the coming weeks, i think that the president is going to need to do a lot more to shore up support among a community that is very distrustful of the administration right now. You can argue whether that is right or wrong, but it is just a fact. In a state like michigan where the margins are very close, that one or 2 of the vote can make a huge difference in an election. I dont think its about elections. This is really about unity, and i think that if you look at the aid package that the president has proposed, he balances the humanitarian aid, and of course the aid package for ukraine. The administration will have to do a lot over these next several days and weeks with our ally israel. And also to ensure the continued humanitarian aid with assistance to palestinians, who are caught in the bind with terrorist hamas, which just operated completely outside of the bounds of humanity. Innocent civilians should not be caught in that battle. Carlos, lets switch gears. Switching gears a little bit, lets talk about the 2024 race. Tim scott has yet to qualify for the third republican debate, and is lagging in the National Polls at 2 . This comes as political reports, even some prominent supporters of scott are beginning to acknowledge his campaign, which has been a disappointment. Yesterday, his Hometown Paper asked its readers to clearly and coalesce behind fellow South Carolina ian nikki haley. Why is scott struggling, and haley gaining momentum . Reverend, i think that editorial answers the question. Nikki haley has really grown and occupied the space of the traditional republican, or the trump alternative. That is the space that she was fighting against tim scott for, against people like chris christie, mike pence, shes emerging as the strongest candidate in poll after poll. We saw that she would probably be the strongest candidate against President Biden for republicans. There has been a lot of money and support consolidating around nikki haley, which is to the detriment of somebody like tim scott. Theyre both trying to occupy their same lane. Theres only scores for one candidate and, there and nikki haley has the upper hand right now. In an effort to combat the low approval numbers in battleground states, the Biden Campaign is looking at buying more that work best with targeted groups of voters, such as blacks, latinos, getting their message out about bidens accomplishments. This will be joined by a new organizing effort starting next month in arizona, and in wisconsin. The Biden Campaign has to find a way to cut through the noise, despite concerns from some people who feel like the money could be better spent elsewhere. What do you make of this strategy . I think it is very smart. I think the one of the things that we have seen over these last several months is that despite having passed record bipartisan legislations, injecting jobs into the economy, the greatest Climate Change proposal that we have ever seen in this country, it is not a new word to the credit of President Biden. Ads that are being run in battleground states, and across the country, trying to lift up the president s accomplishments, and to do it in a way to prepare for next year in this time with the president , where he doesnt have an opponent. It is going to be important to make sure that he is fully rehabilitated in the eyes of voters in the face of having to go against a Media Environment which is not been willing or wanting to talk about his accomplishments. All, right i will have to leave it there. Donna edwards and Carlos Curbelo, thank you both for being with us. Coming up, tragedy touching another israeli family. We will speak to a man that says that his brother and brothers girlfriend were murdered by hamas. And his father remains a hostage held in gaza. Age held in gaza dude . Dog food in the fridge . About getting vaccinated against rsv today. Welcome back to politicsnation. I want to focus now on the Hostage Situation in gaza. As we continue to talk about the human toll. The Hostage Situation, according to the israeli army, at least 200 hostes are being held captive by hamas. Up to ten americans are still unaccounted for, according to the u. S. State department. Over 20 of the hostages are children under the age of 18. Between 10 to 20 of them are over the age of 60. The majority of the hostages are considered to be alive. Joining me now is leo perry, his 79 year old father is in the hands of hamas. His brother, and his brothers girlfriend were both murdered. Thank you for joining us. You lived in tel aviv now, but you are originally from a kibbutz where one of the massacres happened. Her father, 79 years old. He was believed to be a abducted by hamas. He has lived in that kibbutz with his wife for the past 50 years. I read that he was a true peace activist. For an organization driving palestinian children from gaza to be treated at an israeli hospital. Tell us about him, and whats the latest that you know about his whereabouts . Good evening. Ever since the saturday morning, more than two weeks ago, my fathers abducted in gaza. Hes almost daily. We are not sure if hes getting any. We are extremely worried. My father is an amazing person. A loving father of five, and a grand brother of 13 grandchildren. He is been a farmer for most of his adult life, within his kibbutz. He is also an artist, and a peace activist. After he finished his army duty, like every other israeli, spending time in the main wars, even in the worst of israel had. He became a great peace activist. He determined that he would do whatever he could, and with whatever voice he has. Trying to end all Military Conflicts for israel. And broader than that, he would drive children, palestinian children from the gaza to get medical attention at israeli hospitals . Yes. There is an amazing Israeli Organization that is simply going to the border, and taking patience, mainly children who arent allowed to go across the border, and so they are alone. Those people who volunteered, they come and pick them up. They go through the israeli hospital, going through the medical care with them. Then they bring them back. It is an amazing organization, and a lot of these volunteers for the gaza surrounding. Many of them were killed or abducted unfortunately. Your Brother Daniel lived in berlin, germany, and was visiting your family, along with his girlfriend, caroline. They were both murdered by hamas terrorists. Tell us about them. My brother and, he was born in manchester, born and raised in manchester. He always had a very hard, strong feeling for israel, and for his family here. He used to come visit us at least once a year. Visiting my family here in the center of israel, going to the kibbutz, where we have some friends. He really loved it here. He was supposed to come back to my house on friday, but he found somebody to drive him on saturday. It was complicated with that. And so he found a way, somebody can give him a ride. Hell just a for one more day. On sunday morning, he texted me. He told me what is going on in the kibbutz. That is the last time i heard from. Wow. You met with a delegation of american members of congress. Is there anything specific that you are hoping that the United States will do to bring your father home . Yes. As i see it, the u. S. President in his visit, also the congressman we spoke to, they all Brother Concerns for the hospital. They understood our point of view, which is that the hospitals should be the first and foremost most important thing that needs to be negotiated for before starting the, war or before anything else. We feel that they have been neglected severely, and that the government should do whatever it can to bring home the hostages. The thing that the American Administration is really breaking up, this attitude. They hope that they will keep on doing, it because as they see, The Americans are our biggest chance of opening the communication line, and helping with all of these Hostage Situations.
