On mobile and desktop today. Im yasmin vossoughian. Were live in israel where there could be a Ground Invasion at any moment. Here is Josh Lederman from the report. This morning, new signs that israels ground war and gaza maybe a minute. Israel vowing to increase attacks as a prepares for the next stage of the war. Releasing video of what it says in an Infantry Brigade practice in the battle plan. Air dropping leaflets warning civilians in Northern Gaza to flee south. As israels Chief Of Staff tell soldiers, we will enter the gaza strip. At the same, time new efforts to get more aid to gaza. Humanitarian organizations are saying that it is still not nearly enough. The u. S. Is increasing its Military Presence in the regions Secretary Of State, anthony blinken, was asked about the fears of a larger conflict. We are concerned. In fact, we expect that there is a likelihood of escalation. Escalation by iranian proxies perpetrated against our forces, against our person. We are taking steps to ensure that we can effectively defend our people, and, respond decisively if we need to. We are also covering some other major news as well. Police investigate the deadly stabbing of the president of a synagogue in michigan. And the field is also sad as republicans the house get ready to try to pick a speaker after three weeks without, won a crucial form set to take place tomorrow. Well take you live to capitol hill. This is coming up as. Well we want to begin with new signs that an israeli Ground Invasion into gaza could be in minutes. With israel really seem footage of forces practicing a battle plan, vowing to increase his tax at the next phase of this war. The idf has been dropping leaflets from the sky, warning gaza residents who have remained in the north to move south. Saying their presence was their lives and danger. Meanwhile, the humanitarian crisis in gaza grows more dire, 17 trucks filled with a turn now on the egyptian side of the rafah border crossing. They have not yet entered. And the west bank, israel saying that it had more than 450 people overnight. Calling them activists. Providing few weather details. That news is coming after Israeli Forces said it struck a terror cell. All that was under a mosque. In the west bank. Well bring in bradley, who is live in lebanon to tell us more about all this happening on the ground there. Lets talk first about this potential Ground Invasion. Its been two weeks or so, of course, since october 7th attack. This grand vigil is going up at any moment. It is still not. Happen what more do you know about . Yeah, yasmin, i mean, ive been in the same position with you. Every time my team and i go to bed, we think were going to be woken up by some sort of Ground Invasion news of some massive strike into the gaza strip. So, far for the next ten, 11 days, we havent seen. That as my colleague said in that package you just ran, if there are increasing signs, we have been seen signals every day for the past ten days. Its unclear whether this signal means some sort of imminent invasion. We just got word that there was one israeli soldier who was killed while he was in the gaza strip. And some sort of mission inside the gaza strip. This indicates that things are heating up. There is still an incredibly fierce barrage of missiles being fired by the israelis into the gaza strip, be met by hamas and other rockets being fired out of the gaza strip, into israel. Clearly, the tempo, the ferocity of this fighting is increasing. Whether that means is a Ground Evasion that could be happening within the day or two, in the next couple of hours, thats really hard to say. To be honest, yasmin, im not sure even this really Senior Officers know. The fact, is theres a lot of considerations that go into this. There are still civilians who are in the northern part of the gaza strip, the israelis have been clear that theyre trying to avoid a lot of civilians in that area. Theyve made clear that thats the area theyre trying to go into snuff out hamas. A lot of this depends on a lot of different factors. Really, its still a big target. Yasmin. I want to talk about where you are as well at the border there, between israel and lebanon. Israel has been evacuating some villages near the lebanon border as its warning of hezbollah against further strikes. The u. S. Is giving the same warning to israel as well. How much of a concern is there about the conflict growing where you are. Yasmin, i given a similar message to what i gave about the gaza strip. We have been sitting here, waiting, expecting for something pick to happen. Night after night, day after. Day so far, we havent seen. Anything we have been seeing the same style of fighting thats been going on gently between israel on the gaza strip. The tempo of it has picked out. The ferocity has increased dramatically. Still, neither side seems to have deviated from the kind of choreography, the Rules Of Engagement, informal Rules Of Engagement that govern the interchange of fire between lebanon israel. That border behind me here. So far, everyone is sticking to the proper rules, to the proper plans. That could change it anytime. We just saw today, five hezbollah fighters were killed. Just today. That brings the total number to 25 were killed. This is a clearly increase risk along the border. One that we dont know where that decision from whether or not to escalate, whether thats going to be coming from hezbollah people youve been speaking to. They say hezbollah accidents. On hamas people up and saying that us as well. Even though both groups are backed by iran. Now, tehran is clearly facing an impasse. With the push for some kind of broad maneuver by hezbollah to push them into israel. It would be a major distraction for the israeli military, even as their machine outside the gaza strip to try to get rid of hamas. Did you have to divert their troops up to the north would be a major issue for them. Weve been hearing from even benjamin netanyahu. He said that in his visit to north and israel, where there are citizens that are still being evacuated, some 14 villages that were evacuated today, maybe netanyahu warned hezbollah that they would be destroyed if they tried to go into israel. We heard from jonathan he is a spokesperson for the idf. He said that hezbollah needs to make a decision. And people of lebanon need to make a decision. Whether or not hezbollah will drag this entire nation into war, and nation that is war weary, all the way from back in 2006. The last time they found with the israelis. A country that has been suffering from an Economic Disaster for the past four years. Theres a lot of people here where i am, where they are really supporting the palestinians. They want to see the israelis put in their place. At the same, time there are huge parts of this country. Including a lot of people here in southern lebanon. Including a lot of people who support hezbollah, who just dont have the taste for another round of destruction going forward. Yasmin. Matt bradley for, us appreciate it. At this hour, some of it you touched. On the u. S. Is increasing its active Military Presence in the middle east says fears of this broader war are growing. This new show a, fors including redirecting this eisenhower strike in the middle east instead of to the Eastern Mediterranean where it was supposed to join the ford strike group. So, that some 2000 u. S. Service members in the region are now in this heightened states, quote unquote, ready to deploy. The president has indicated u. S. Troops dont need to be deployed into israel and gaza, has vowed to provide israel everything they need. A short time ago, the State Department updated their travel advisory for rock. Urging people to not travel to the country due to terrorism, kidnapping, armed conflicts, civil unrest, and iraqs limited capacity to provide support to u. S. Citizens. One of reagan nbcs allie raffa. For more on this. If you, well, ali expand on some of what i just laid, out and what we were hearing from the administration on the fear of this becoming a wider war. Yeah, yasmin that certainly top of mind for administration officials. The president , todays white house officials tell us that this is very much a Working Weekend for the president as he remains at his delaware home, focusing on any updates in the war between israel and hamas between the scenes. We know that the president spoke with israeli president , netanyahu, to talk about the latest updates and that war. He was also briefed by his National Security team, that briefing included Vice President kamala harris, Secretary Of State, anthony blinken, and Secretary Of Defense, lloyd austin. We also understand that according to the, pope francis also spoke with President Biden during a 20minute long phone call. They talk about pats for peace in the middle east. Administration officials continue to say that the president s number one priority right now is getting americans out of gaza. An estimated ten americans that are still unaccounted for are believed to be among the over 200 hostages that we know are inside of gaza. They say that a coordination and communication at the highest levels is continuing with israelis, and with the egyptians, sing qatari is to be able to facilitate a fine teen prenup these people after we saw two americans freed last week. The president thanking the israelis for spearheading that effort. White house Officials Say that they also are concerned, and focus right now on ensuring that more aid, more of those trucks, those hundreds of trucks that are lined up along the rafah border crossing, that more them will be able to go into gaza to help just propel stadiums. Tillis and to the special envoy for humanitarian affairs in the middle east. With jen psaki. This is a legitimate needs for the people of gaza. If hamas interferes with, csis, or diverts this assistance, it will, as a practical matter, make it very difficult for this assistance to continue. It will be another demonstration of hamass lack of concern for the welfare of the palestinian people. Yasmin, u. S. Official familiar with these efforts to get more aid into cause that is telling me that they are not aware of any attempts of diversion by hamas to divert any of the trucks that were allowed in yesterday. They say that as far as all those trucks were able to get to you and facilities inside gaza, once they were able to cross that rafah border crossing. Officials say that they are also working on these efforts to get americans out. We know that more than 350 americans have been in contact with the State Department requesting help to be able to get them and their Family Members outside of gaza. What i think is also notable is that Secretary Of State, anthony blinken, was asked about just the future of this war. He was asked by our christian walker, what efforts inside gaza are going to look like if israel, as weve heard the israeli Officials Say, they have no interest in governing any area of gaza. Once this war eventually does. And take a listen to a bit more that. They cant go back to the status quo, with hamas been in a position, in terms of its governance of gaza, to repeat what it did. At the same time, but apart from the israelis is absolutely no, intent no desire to be running gaza themselves. There are different ideas out there, but one could follow. All of that needs to be worked. Is something that needs to be worked even as israel is dealing with the current threat. Yasmin, obviously that leads to concerns over whether this vacuum of governing will lead to potentially hamas or other Terrorist Organizations to use the gaza strip for any further future activity, yasmin. Allie raffa for, as ali, thank you. We have a lot more coming up, folks. In just 60 seconds, we have some Breaking News out of capitol hill. We now know the new candidates who are going for the gavel as the house prepares to take another shot at picking a speaker. A lot reported that coming up next. Coming u next all right, welcome back. We learn just a short time ago who is going to run for the speaker seat as House Republicans are heading back to washington. I want to bring in our reporter on capitol hill to talk us through it. We had a kind of working less yesterday. It seemed as if this list is more finished up. To say, to be more exact, talk us through what were learning, who is on that list, looking at this noon deadline tomorrow. Yeah there was a new deadline today for the House Republicans to decide if they wanted to run for speaker. Nine people have said yes, they do want to put their names and the. Hat is not the news weve heard in the past. Its not jim jordan, ste scalise, not those people. Its nine folks, one of them as the secretary congressn. One of them is a former marine. One of them is a former owner of more than 20 mcdonalds restaurants. That is kevin hern of oklahoma. Then you have tom amber, he is the current house majority. Web he is currently, of course, and leadership. He has more than eight years of experience here in the house of representatives. He is somebody who has the backing of kevinmccarthy, but does not have the backing of donald trump. That may play a role. Regardless of who ends up getting in the speakers gavels, everyone seems to be saying this morning on sunday shows, theyve been saying this for 19 days now, is this needs to get done. This needs to get done quickly. So running through the next couple days, here tomorrow at 6 30 pm, thats going to be a Family Meeting of sorts. What that is goi t look like as every house republican, Whil The Nine candidates stand up and explain why they believe they should be the next speaker of that house. Afr all, those nine candidates, they will go home fonight. Then tuesday at nine a. M. , there will be an internal vote within the republican conference to decide, hopefully, one candidate they want to put on the floor. As speaker patrick mchenry, says he hopes to be able to, as soon as tuesday, have a candidate on the floor. This is something thats been going on for 19 days. I remember looking at a couple days. Here it is currently october 20, for September 30th was the last time this house passed any piece of legislation. November 17th is when the government shuts down. So a lot to do in less than a month, jasmine. Were certainly going to be watching activities on capitol hill in the coming days. See if they can get something, someone across the finish line there, and then get something done and the house, especially with agency, it varies in parts of the world right now. Desperately. Thank you. Coming up in our next hour, i will speak with congresswoman Delia Ramirez about the gops dysfunctional search for speaker. About the letter that she and it doesnt over houston look at a congolese signed calling for an immediate cease fire of gaza. Up next, the tragic stabbing of a synagogue president in michigan. Israel is releasing more information about an idea of soldier killed inside of gaza. I want to go straight to jerusalem where we find nbc news correspondent jay gray. This is just breaking as i am coming on the air about 35 minutes or so ago. What more details are we learning about this . Is this the first idea of soldier to have been killed inside gaza . Well, to this point, its the first we have been told about it. We know that the soldier was killed in a raid near the border that three other idf soldiers were injured. One of those is considered serious. The other two were called light injuries. We know that there continues to be activity in and around the border fence and gaza. We know that the troops and equipment there have been moved around. It is clear that they are preparing to do something on the ground. In fact, for the first time in a while, you have actually got the idf talking about Ground Maneuvers. They have increased airstrikes in the region, targeting infrastructure of hamas as well as operational complexes. They say they are doing that in Preparation For, and these are their words, promaneuvers. We know that the airstrikes continue around the clock. They say that they are doing this to make sure that hamas is weakened, tired, and distorted. They want to do this in Preparation For the next stage of Military Operations. You realize that things are changing on the ground because they are starting to talk about the Ground Maneuvers more openly. As you have alluded to and talked about, they are working in that area to clear the way for those Ground Maneuvers. All of that filtering out and into areas like jerusalem where everyone is watching this very closely. There is an uneasy tension here. We talked with one of the shopkeepers in the old city today. Here is what he had to say hoping for a quick resolution. The only thing is to find a solution for everybody to live in peace. Feed the person, help him, take care of him. He will be friendly. We will have peace everywhere all over the world. Killing, shooting doesnt make sense. He doesnt make any solution. If you dont want it, there is something else. A lot of people share that same sentiment. I think it bears repeating. One idea of soldier is dead after a raid near the border. At least three others were injured. What the idf is saying is that they will continue and increase air strikes as they prepare the area, they say, the road maneuvers. Jay gray, thank you for watching us. I want to bring in joel reuben, former Secretary Of State for House Affairs and msnbc Military Analyst and retired Four Star GeneralBarry Mccaffrey to talk more about this. Let me just start off with you. We were just getting the news. Im going to read a portion of the idf statement from the spokesperson who is going to be on the show in a little while. Idf forces raided gaza near the border as part of an effort to prepare the area for an attack and collect any information regarding the missing and abducted. An idea of soldier was killed and three were injured. A couple of things, general, that stand out to me is, first, they said during one of the raids, so what i am gleaning from this is there have been multiple raids. Im wondering when that began. Is this kind of the Modus Operandi when preparing for a Ground Invasion, to send in these small strike groups to assess the area especially when you have 200 plus hostages being held by hamas inside gaza . Well, rule number one of Military Operations is to gain and then maintain contact with an enemy force. The idf right now has been conducting active reconnaissance and trying to understand where hamas fighters will be located, possibly finding out hostage locations. I am sure there is now covert activity going on on the ground inside gaza. They are clearly a lot of the intelligence collection done with unmanned aerial vehicles, overhead satellites. I am sure we are also assisting the intelligent preparation. This is shaping the battlefield. The idf has a huge challenge in front of it. How do you take an urban area with 1 Million People living in it, hundreds of miles of underground tunnels, where youre trying to preserve civilian a life and protect hostages but at the same time not suffer catastrophic, multi week losses in your own military . I am sure the idf now internally must be saying, this operation, 100,000 troops in the attack could will result in 10,000 or more idf casualties. The challenge in a doing this in an environment where much of World Opinion has focused on hamas humanitarian aid efforts, netanyahu is in political trouble, this is threatening him from the north. It is a very difficult period for the israelis. Joel, the general just laid out the landscape of what the israelis are dealing with. Its important to note whats happening inside gaza as well amidst all of this. I know that the white house is walking back the president s initial statement when he was heard a question from a reporter in saying he was asking for a delay of the Ground Invasion. They now walked those comments back. Do you believe the white house, the administration is possibly asking for or is advocating for a delay, hence the reason why we are two weeks out from the attack considering the hostages that are being held in gaza right now . Yasmin, i think there are multiple pressures happening now as mccaffrey rightfully laid out. The on the ground situation is very complicated. Its not as if the idf wants to go into gaza since it departed in 2006. That is a then danger for the invading force. I think President Biden is leaning in into the years as well as on the military channels with Secretary Of Defense austin who is discussing his experience of fighting i. S. I. S. , for example, in the close combat, the urban warfare, the intensity of it. Make sure you have a plan which is truly sufficient. For President Biden, what is your day after scenario . How does one identify potential forces that could go in, governing authorities that could go in . Could it be a multi arab force . Could it be the Palestinian Authority again . Israel does not want to reinstitute a full occupation of gaza. Those questions are best discussed and answered now prior to an invasion. I think that is where President Biden is leading his strong advice behind closed doors. But it seems as if, joel, that the israelis do not necessarily have a plan for the governing of gaza after the eradication of hamas. That seems to be part of the issue here. Without a doubt. Maybe there is no good answer. At a certain point, the israeli leadership is just going to have to make a decision about whether they fish or cut bait. 700,000 troops are sitting alongside gaza interminably. Thats not sustainable. There will be a moment where they have to decide whether to go in or not. Having a good, clear answer might not be a sign with the ts crossed in the eyes dotted. There may not be a hard enough plan in place to communicate to americans who have relationships with israel. If theres no real plan afterwards, were looking for a continued humanitarian disaster for the palestinians in gaza. I think it is very important to put that on the table. The palestinians are suffering in gaza. This is through no fault of their own, through the fault of hamas. Thats where the blame lays. Right now, they will likely continue to suffer if there is no day after a plan. Hopefully, that kind of discussion is accelerating around the region as well. General, i think the other major concern for people as they are awaiting this is the innocence of aliens inside gaza. Many of them have moved south, i believe 700,000 or so palestinians have now moved south. Or sthat area is also being bombarded at times. When you think about how to avoid civilian casualties here with a potential ground incursion, i want to play for you, defense secretary lloyd austin, thinking about the challenges of that and how you react to the other side. One of the things that we learned is how to account for civilians in the violent space. They are part of the space. In accordance with the law of war, we have to do what is necessary to protect those civilians. As i have talked to Minister Gallant and others, i have encouraged them to conduct their operations in accordance with the law of war. Practically, though, general, as we are talking about this, how do you safely avoid substantial casualties, civilian casualties in a Ground Invasion like israel is about to launch . I think the good news is that the primary area of combat is probably going to be underground. I think the israelis will get in there in 48 hours and dominate the street level. They will be fierce fighting in the vertical structures. At the end of the day, they will be sitting on the ground. There is no question that you cannot fight in an urban area with hundreds of thousand civilian families in their without causing socalled collateral damage. To the advantage of the israelis, i think that is what they will do to try to minimize the. At the end of the day, the key point to all of this is how this war ends. Does it and with hamas largely neutralized for 2 to 5 years of peace and given an option to try to find new options for gaza or does it end with hamas telling the arab world that we slaughtered hundreds of Civilian Israelis and got away with it . I think we have to look at the next years outcomes as much as the coming few weeks. We cant forget the 7th Of October created this firestorm. By the way, hezbollah up north with 100,000 fighters is a huge threat to Israeli Citizens and civilians. I dont expect its going to go full scale but we would see another high intensity battle take place in a southern lebanon. The country is an economic and political basket case. General Barry Mccaffrey, joel reuben, thank you. Coming up next, everybody, the plead eels that have shaken up the prosecution of donald trump as too codefendants are set to testify against him. The specific count that he pled guilty to says that he conspired with donald trump, rudy giuliani, john eastman, and several other people to knowingly file a false statement under the Election Count act. That fall statement was at the 16 people who signed those socalled Alternate Elector certificates were, in fact, the letters from the State Of Georgia when they were not. All along, chesebro and others, including the former president , have claimed that, we call them fake elector certificates, that they were legitimate in some way or another, that they were being prepared if trump won a lawsuit or Something Like that. His attorneys have made that argument over and over again i want to talk about fani willis as well. I think a lot of people saw this coming. She is continuing along with this case. Republicans promised to take action against her by using this newly formed commission. It was approved by republican Governor Brian Kemp back in may and it was created to make it easier to oust progressive dgas. Before this commission began, at the start of this month you actually told Rachel Maddow there was 100 chance republicans would file a complaint against fani willis. You were right. Gop State Lawmakers have filed this former complaint with the states new prosecuting attorneys qualification commission. Walk us through this and how this whole process could actually work. I should have taken money on that birth, shouldnt i . There are eight members of the state senate here that filed this complaint early in october. Very vague allegations. They dont actually specifically mentioned donald trump. What they allege in this complaint, apparently, is, quote, the District Attorney improperly cherrypicked cases to further her personal political agenda. They go on to say that the backlog of cases, back to atlanta, and the problems we are having at our local jail are somehow a result of the fact that she decided to spend her resources investigating the interference with the 2020 election. Thats the basis of the complaint. What is the likelihood of Something Like this would actually work in your move in the Fulton County d. A. Fani willis . I think the complaint is dead on arrival, really. For one, this new commission, they have drafted rules which have to be get approved by the state supreme court. What if the rules they have drafted said that the commission will not receive a complaint that is happened in the past this complaint is all about the special grand jury which is done and gone. The decision is filed. The indictment, which we now have three guilty pleas, its all past history. The commissioner said in the proposed rules that they are not going to look at past conduct. Right off the bat, i think the complaint isnt going anywhere. I also dont think it comes close to meeting the standards for removal of the District Attorney which, of course, is what they are seeking. Clark cunningham, thank, you sir. We appreciate it. Were talking to you. Coming at the top of the hour, we are live near the border next. We are live near the borde next next [stomach growling] its nothing. Sounds like something. As we watch events unfold in the middle east, there are Heart Wrenching stories from both israelis and palestinians with loved ones at the center of this War Surfacing online. I am in the wars first week. One writer made contact with ofri whose family has been captured by hamas and also loay, a Palestinian American trying to get his elderly parents out of israels blockade in gaza. The author is joining us now to talk about the stories. Thank you for joining on this. We appreciate it. On october 7th, ofri and her brother spoke for the very last time before her brother anhi family were taken. Walk us through what was exchanged between the two of them and how that felt for her knowing her brother had been taken by hamas. Absolutely. Thank you so much for having me. She first heard from her brother earlier that morning at around 6 30. He had assumed it was just regular a bombing. They become so used to these kinds of various attacks from hamas. He said to her that we were going into the shelter. Here we go again. A couple hours later, he realized this was not normal. He told his sister that he is very scared. He told her it felt like the end and that they could hear hamas outside of their home, that they had weapons, they could hear them shooting, and one of the last Text Messages she ever received from her brother was him letting her know that they had come into their home and that was the last time she ever heard from him. Ofri were called seeing three photos of her brother online that are etched in her brain now. One of them is someone from hamas strangling him with one hand and holding a hammer in the other hand. She said, quote, those pictures do not leave my mind. I wake up with them. I go to sleep with them. I try not to think about them. They keep coming up. What is giving her hope right now . Honestly, its hard to put it into words, this inner strength that i have heard from so many people in israel that is really difficult to quantify. She didnt even know her brother was alive for a couple of days. She saw the images on tuesday. She saw the Life Draining from his face. He kept looking more and more scared and uncertain and defeated. She is extremely afraid. All she can do, she told me, was continue to talk about her brother, about her sister, about the two little boys that were taken as well. There is loay, who is seeing this all happening from los angeles and is in contact with his parents. They were in Northern Gaza. After being bombed, they moved to gaza city to an old clinic the father had. The father said to loay, if i die, take care of your brothers. What was that like for him . What has he been doing to try to get his parents out of gaza . How often is he in contact with them . He is trying every day to call them. Thats really all he does. He told me he just watches the news, scares stairs at the tv screen to see if the location where his parents are as being bombed, if he can tell if its even in the vicinity, and he constantly calls them, thinking that they will or wont. The last time he heard from them, he was able to talk to them for all of three minutes. He said they sounded very weak. They have no food, no running water, no medicine, and they are in a room with 60 other people and one bathroom. He is just doing everything he can. Theres not really much he can do. He says they are elderly and they cant walk. He is just frantically hoping that he can hear their voice one more time. Daniel campoamor, thank you for bringing up these stories. We appreciate it. All right, our second hour starts right now, everybody. Hey, everybody. Im yasmin vossoughian. If you are just joining us, welcome. If you are sticking with us, we are thankful for that.
